- 2:28Speaker 1: had them hunt him down. My next guest became a
- 2:31Speaker 1: social media viral sensation at sixteen years old and in
- 2:34Speaker 1: nineteen that which launched his career after he recorded and
- 2:37Speaker 1: posted to YouTube a video of his performance of Reverend
- 2:41Speaker 1: Paul Jones I Won't Complain, which he performed and his
- 2:45Speaker 1: high school cafeterer in on the last day of school.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I don't know what he was complained about it, but
- 2:51Speaker 1: he sucked, but it was the last day of school.
- 2:54Speaker 1: The video massed over one million views. He's a gospel singer,
- 2:58Speaker 1: a worship leader who releases the bait album The Higher
- 3:01Speaker 1: Experience on April this year, which features the singles no
- 3:05Speaker 1: Ordinary Worship and Higher Please. Welcome to money Making Conversation
- 3:10Speaker 1: ninety years old, Full of vigor, Klante Gavin, What's going on,
- 3:17Speaker 1: I oppen tell yourself, young man. First of all, congratulations
- 3:21Speaker 1: when I say congratulations to you. Um, you know, I
- 3:26Speaker 1: always looked at listening to Uh, I look at my
- 3:28Speaker 1: life because I I've led a very fortunate life. But
- 3:32Speaker 1: I always know that I wasn't quick to make decisions.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I didn't really understand myself in nineteen. I didn't understand
- 3:39Speaker 1: myself at thirty. I'll be honest with you for it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I was still confused. And you figured it out to
- 3:45Speaker 1: this point. And now you know, as you grow older,
- 3:47Speaker 1: you will change, you will be, you will do some things.
- 3:50Speaker 1: But at this point you knew this is what you
- 3:52Speaker 1: wanted to do. Correct, Yes, sir, I knew it. I
- 3:56Speaker 1: knew it. I knew with the help of God, of course,
- 3:59Speaker 1: but yes, sir, I knew it. Man, You're on it.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And so how did you put those those steps into action?
- 4:05Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. Well, I grew up in a you know,
- 4:07Speaker 1: a Christian home. Um, so my mom and my dad
- 4:10Speaker 1: lived by you know, um me and my house well
- 4:14Speaker 1: serve the Lord. And so I'm so grateful for my
- 4:16Speaker 1: parents and my my guidance and and you know them
- 4:20Speaker 1: being great leaders to teach me the ways and to
- 4:23Speaker 1: know how to be in the will of God. It
- 4:25Speaker 1: wasn't forced upon me like I've heard stories of other
- 4:27Speaker 1: young people there. You know, they have the other choice.
- 4:30Speaker 1: But with my parents, that gave me a choice because
- 4:31Speaker 1: at the end of the day, they said, you you
- 4:33Speaker 1: are accountable for every decision that you make. Rather it's
- 4:36Speaker 1: good or bad, they're going to be consequences. So they
- 4:39Speaker 1: gave me the word, gave us the words, and so
- 4:41Speaker 1: whatever we did after the word was on us and
- 4:43Speaker 1: not them. And so I'm so gread for the guy
- 4:46Speaker 1: that is where I come from. Then, so try out
- 4:48Speaker 1: to my parents. Man, yes, they're definitely tell us about
- 4:52Speaker 1: your parents. What did your what did your father do
- 4:55Speaker 1: for love? What your mom doing? Because I put this
- 4:57Speaker 1: a platform for Mr gaff you know what I'm saying,
- 5:00Speaker 1: Nat old gospel superstar. Oh man to God with me
- 5:05Speaker 1: the girls. So my parents are overside of military. Me
- 5:07Speaker 1: we'd been through. My mom did a thirteen years in
- 5:10Speaker 1: the Army. My dad he was in the Marines, and
- 5:13Speaker 1: so yeah, how that how they mixed up, we don't know.
- 5:16Speaker 1: But but but yes, third, they are amazing people retired
- 5:22Speaker 1: military um there in ministry and so we're all in ministry.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So it's just so grateful they're not passing, so we're
- 5:27Speaker 1: just seven ministries. I'm grateful the guy for that. I'm
- 5:30Speaker 1: one of those seven siblings. So God's bless me um
- 5:33Speaker 1: with my shiplers across the world. But in the house
- 5:36Speaker 1: we have four. And so man pray for Maybe you're
- 5:39Speaker 1: some young ones of trying to get them, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 1: get them on the right narrow. I remember, I'm just saying, anybody, Hi,
- 5:46Speaker 1: how I found you? You know, you became part of
- 5:48Speaker 1: my brand of my awareness. I was I live in Atlanta, Georgia,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and there's a radio station. Uh, and I get up
- 5:57Speaker 1: early at four thirty and I get in my car
- 5:59Speaker 1: and I drive to my office. Is five three in
- 6:01Speaker 1: the morning. I'm telling you five through the morning, your
- 6:03Speaker 1: board be driving and it's a hip hop station. But
- 6:06Speaker 1: before they start playing hip hop, they play gospel. And
- 6:10Speaker 1: and then he was interviewing you and what was and
- 6:13Speaker 1: you were so profound And I find out you were
- 6:16Speaker 1: an eighteen years old. I went, Okay, who was this
- 6:19Speaker 1: old dude stuck in this nineteen year old body? You?
- 6:28Speaker 1: And you hear that a lot, don't you hear that?
- 6:31Speaker 1: A lot? Time? All the time, all the time, all
- 6:37Speaker 1: the time. But you know that's not that's not a
- 6:40Speaker 1: negative now because like I said, that's not a negative.
- 6:43Speaker 1: That's a because I'm complimenting you, because that's a degree
- 6:46Speaker 1: of maturity. It goes back to your parents again, a
- 6:49Speaker 1: shout out to Mr Army and Mr Marine Okay and
- 6:53Speaker 1: Mr Marine because they they you know, I come from
- 6:57Speaker 1: my my father and my mom said, no, sir, you
- 7:01Speaker 1: know that I didn't. And I would tell you I
- 7:04Speaker 1: cussed now, I knew used bad words now, but it
- 7:08Speaker 1: wasn't tonten that I said one you know, one day
- 7:11Speaker 1: now and I made up for lost time now, but
- 7:14Speaker 1: I didn't other word. I used to play basketball in
- 7:16Speaker 1: the court and I would I would talk correctly. Why
- 7:19Speaker 1: are you are you are hitting me so hard? That
- 7:22Speaker 1: is unnecessary? And that they were looking at me, go
- 7:25Speaker 1: what what? This dude o't curse? What's going on here? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?
- 7:29Speaker 1: Why is he talking like this? Because they had put
- 7:31Speaker 1: a discipline in me, just like your parents have put
- 7:34Speaker 1: a discipline in you, a course of action that you've
- 7:38Speaker 1: chosen to follow, and you're willing to share that course
- 7:41Speaker 1: of action in your music. So talk to us about
- 7:43Speaker 1: your music, Mr Gavin, Oh my gosh, I just released
- 7:47Speaker 1: my debut album, The Hiri Spis in April, so we
- 7:51Speaker 1: set it to my amazement. Team Markets who enterprises, a
- 7:54Speaker 1: labeled company with whom we're in partnership with Scott Amazing family.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Is amazing album. I believe anybody's gonna get it. You
- 8:02Speaker 1: will not be disappointed. It's on all digital outlets, So
- 8:05Speaker 1: tell your cousin and everybody to go grab Kilon Kate
- 8:09Speaker 1: Gavin's hot new fresh album, The Higher Stems. Manly say
- 8:14Speaker 1: something like, guys are really blessing me man to travel
- 8:17Speaker 1: acrous the country and just to articulate and share the
- 8:20Speaker 1: heart of God with people you know you can't. The
- 8:22Speaker 1: reason why I name it the Higher Experiences because you
- 8:25Speaker 1: know everybody you know, we you know we've been to
- 8:27Speaker 1: higher places. But I believe God wants to take us higher,
- 8:29Speaker 1: whether than your life and your family, and your finances,
- 8:33Speaker 1: in your relationships, your loverage, whatever is. God wants to
- 8:37Speaker 1: take us higher. But in going higher, you cannot forget
- 8:40Speaker 1: about every low place you've been. You can't have a
- 8:42Speaker 1: high without a low, and hills up gonna have a
- 8:45Speaker 1: top without a bottom. So I'm grateful for every pit place,
- 8:48Speaker 1: every dark place that God. You know that that I've
- 8:50Speaker 1: went through, my family went through regardless you know, of
- 8:53Speaker 1: of of of where we come from or even where
- 8:55Speaker 1: we're going. I learned that true maturity is not just
- 8:59Speaker 1: about acknowledge in your future, but it's learning to appreciate
- 9:02Speaker 1: your path. And once you learn to appreciate what you've got,
- 9:05Speaker 1: oh man, gotta put more in your hands. And so
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm just grateful for that. Man. So that's what the
- 9:09Speaker 1: higher experience is. Man. So your sir, yes, you have
- 9:13Speaker 1: two singles, No Ordinary Worship and then Higher No Worship Man.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And actually had a video of me saying it on
- 9:25Speaker 1: my porch in the country of South Carolina. Man, it
- 9:28Speaker 1: was viral, I mean like over the mebe at one
- 9:31Speaker 1: point five million views and uh nor new Worship is
- 9:34Speaker 1: the new fresh single. That's a little Prince Field to it,
- 9:37Speaker 1: a little print print Prince was purple Ray, Prince Prince.
- 9:47Speaker 1: You gotta see the video on YouTube because they had
- 9:49Speaker 1: the purple line and everything like it was just awesome.
- 9:51Speaker 1: We did it live in Atlanta, recorded live in Atlanta.
- 9:54Speaker 1: So norder they worship and Higher, My mom wrote, Higher Man.
- 9:57Speaker 1: My mom wrote that you're busy. You're busy. Now that
- 10:02Speaker 1: the best time, this honest conversation. You know, you have
- 10:05Speaker 1: all these you know, because you have to walk a
- 10:08Speaker 1: pretty straight line, you know, because of the fact that,
- 10:10Speaker 1: like you just mentioned, you can't have double standards when
- 10:13Speaker 1: you when you speak in the word. And so when
- 10:16Speaker 1: you know you have rappers out there, you know you
- 10:19Speaker 1: have they could do what they want to do and
- 10:21Speaker 1: they can still praise God when they get that award.
- 10:24Speaker 1: You know, you know what I'm saying they get They
- 10:28Speaker 1: still out there man, passed half pants halfway, they booted
- 10:31Speaker 1: tattoos on the in between the eyeballs. You know, they're
- 10:35Speaker 1: getting fired up and all that good stuff on a
- 10:37Speaker 1: daily basis. But they still walk out there prayers the Lord.
- 10:41Speaker 1: But you can't do that. Is that the double standards
- 10:47Speaker 1: that annoys you? Oh? Man, it's I wouldn't say it
- 10:51Speaker 1: annoys me, but you know, sometimes I get disappointed. But
- 10:54Speaker 1: then I realized that everybody that professed Jesus don't know Jesus.
- 10:59Speaker 1: You know, every I'm still getting to know who he is.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Just to see many that are older than me, it
- 11:04Speaker 1: kind of disappoints me because it's like, man, i've I've
- 11:07Speaker 1: looked up to you, or I've I've gotten something from
- 11:09Speaker 1: your ministry to where it impacted my life. But you know,
- 11:12Speaker 1: I can't see how others, you know, do whatever they
- 11:16Speaker 1: want to do, you know at the end of the day.
- 11:17Speaker 1: But I'm learning that every day I get to know
- 11:19Speaker 1: him for myself. Watch this after Sunday Surface. It's not
- 11:22Speaker 1: just a tradition weakly for me. It's in everyday kind
- 11:26Speaker 1: of love that that I get to get to engage
- 11:29Speaker 1: with the one whom whom I'm in love with that
- 11:31Speaker 1: saved my life. And I promise you that if it
- 11:34Speaker 1: was not for Jesus, I wouldn't lean across the cafeteria
- 11:36Speaker 1: table just to tell him thank you. That took me
- 11:39Speaker 1: across the world. So I'm grateful for that man. And
- 11:42Speaker 1: every day I make sure man with my foot touch
- 11:44Speaker 1: the flow. Man. I said, thank you. Man. I have
- 11:47Speaker 1: everything I want, but I got everything I need. So
- 11:49Speaker 1: I would encourage somebody that's listening, don't look at what
- 11:51Speaker 1: you're end to look at what's it going through. You
- 11:53Speaker 1: are a winner, You will overcome, and most importantly, God
- 11:56Speaker 1: has his hand on your life. And as long as
- 11:58Speaker 1: he has his hands on your like you ought to
- 12:00Speaker 1: tell him thank you for everything that he's walking with
- 12:03Speaker 1: you through and everything he's about to take you too.
- 12:05Speaker 1: So I'm gonna living with this, mate, I think you, man,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you remind me of two people. These are good people.
- 12:15Speaker 1: You remind me of Kurt Franklin, who I love to death,
- 12:18Speaker 1: and you remind me of Nick Cannon, who love to death.
- 12:23Speaker 1: You know could Nick and at your age she Nick
- 12:28Speaker 1: got it sixteen He was on stage telling Joe you
- 12:31Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. And one of the top entrepreneurs
- 12:34Speaker 1: in this country. Okay, same thing with Kurt Franklin because
- 12:39Speaker 1: she I hear you, man, You wanted gifted people. Man,
- 12:44Speaker 1: you know like Stephen A. Smith, who I love and
- 12:47Speaker 1: admire him because he starts talking and guess what he's
- 12:51Speaker 1: talking fifteen and never take a breath every it. Don't
- 12:55Speaker 1: stumble and don't stomble. What I would ask of you,
- 12:58Speaker 1: And I don't know if you do this now, because
- 13:00Speaker 1: you've done some things on this show where you just
- 13:02Speaker 1: have just started spitting out motivation, spitting out encouragement. I
- 13:07Speaker 1: would love for you just just put that old video
- 13:11Speaker 1: just on your Instagram, like sixty second little just motivational moments,
- 13:16Speaker 1: because man, your your age group needs to hear from
- 13:19Speaker 1: you in that manner too. Because see one thing, I'm
- 13:22Speaker 1: gonna just tell you something, Kalante. A lot of people
- 13:25Speaker 1: were here the word gospel. That ain't me, That ain't me.
- 13:29Speaker 1: But what you're saying, ain't got nothing to do. We're
- 13:33Speaker 1: going to church. It's about saving your soul and motivating
- 13:37Speaker 1: you to a path of success through the word of God. Correct.
- 13:42Speaker 1: So if you, if you my friend, we're just once
- 13:46Speaker 1: a week, just grabs just like you just spit out
- 13:49Speaker 1: these terms in front of me. Man, I just been
- 13:51Speaker 1: stioning here quietly listening to you, quietly listening to motivate
- 13:55Speaker 1: me to success. Do that favor from me, man, and
- 13:58Speaker 1: and start turning people, adults, young people around to a
- 14:02Speaker 1: vision that they that they want to ignore, but they
- 14:05Speaker 1: can't walk away because I'm gonna telling this man, God
- 14:08Speaker 1: gonna come talk to you whether you want to or not. Yes, Sir,
- 14:13Speaker 1: I love it. I love it. You are on it.
- 14:14Speaker 1: That's confirmation. Man. I was just thinking before I got
- 14:17Speaker 1: on this interview, what am I gonna do to that.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I need to put up a clip of of what
- 14:21Speaker 1: encouraging somebody something. You're on it many so I thank
- 14:24Speaker 1: you for that. Man, Well, I'm gonn tell you. I
- 14:26Speaker 1: want to thank you for taking the time to talk
- 14:27Speaker 1: to me on my show. I want to thank you,
- 14:30Speaker 1: you know, allowing me to promote your brand. Let people
- 14:34Speaker 1: know that there's a young man out there sixty years old.
- 14:37Speaker 1: A cafeteria lady decided to be acting on ourselves and
- 14:41Speaker 1: record you and create a career to changing lives every day.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Don't you change, Mr Gavin, don't you change another thing.
- 14:48Speaker 1: You keep winning, right, you keep winning. We'll be right
- 14:51Speaker 1: back with more from mar Sean McDonald and money making conversations.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Don't touch that down. When I was an FBI agent,
- 14:58Speaker 1: I was aware of who title fraud. There was little
- 15:01Speaker 1: we could do to stop it. Now there's home title lock.
- 15:04Speaker 1: This online bank was for closing on us. They even
- 15:07Speaker 1: had documents that I signed for a home equity loan.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Only I didn't want a nightmare. I didn't have home
- 15:13Speaker 1: title lock then, but you bet I had it. Now.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Your home's title is online where international thieves can find it.
- 15:19Speaker 1: They'll forge your title, take out loans using your equity,
- 15:23Speaker 1: or sell your home outright. Identity theft programs and insurance
- 15:27Speaker 1: don't protect you for just pennies a day. Home title
- 15:30Speaker 1: lot predicts my most valuable asset, my home. As a
- 15:34Speaker 1: police officer, I've seen what home title fraud does to victims.
- 15:37Speaker 1: So I registered for Home Title Lock and when I did,
- 15:40Speaker 1: I discovered some thief had already taken me off my

- 17:39Speaker 1: UH called Proud. And you have two versions of that correct,
- 17:43Speaker 1: one for one for the eight to twelve and then
- 17:46Speaker 1: the adult version that I read. I'm saying, the dull
- 17:49Speaker 1: version of like like there's some scary version of adult.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But you you decide of the right two versions. Why
- 17:54Speaker 1: is that? Well, it's always been important for me to
- 18:00Speaker 1: fully inspired our youth, in particular with my journey, and
- 18:04Speaker 1: I thought what better way to do that than to
- 18:07Speaker 1: have a young reader's edition. Yeah. I remember, you know,
- 18:11Speaker 1: growing up and having these moments where you know the
- 18:15Speaker 1: behavior of your friends and the people around you can
- 18:18Speaker 1: affect how you feel about yourself. And we all, you know,
- 18:22Speaker 1: need that push sometimes, if not from the people around us,
- 18:26Speaker 1: maybe you can find inspiration maybe in my story or
- 18:29Speaker 1: from an athlete or you know, someone in in your life. Well,
- 18:34Speaker 1: the inspiration I found was that you never gave up. Uh. Well,
- 18:39Speaker 1: let's go back a little bit. I remember that when
- 18:41Speaker 1: you was running track and uh and your father told
- 18:45Speaker 1: you if it gets too hot, it gets to get
- 18:47Speaker 1: too much for you, just stop and you stopped when
- 18:50Speaker 1: you was running track and you ran over to your
- 18:52Speaker 1: brother brothers and why do you stop? You were winning
- 18:55Speaker 1: and your mom looked at you. Mom just looked at
- 18:57Speaker 1: you gave that mom looking at your mom. I love
- 18:59Speaker 1: to day in this book. If you want to be
- 19:01Speaker 1: inspired by anybody in this book, you gotta read this
- 19:04Speaker 1: book to read about her mom. She's amazing. That was
- 19:06Speaker 1: that was the turning point for you on decision making,
- 19:09Speaker 1: at that critical point, at critical point in your life. Correct, Oh, yeah,
- 19:14Speaker 1: I mean it's I My dad, who um you know,
- 19:19Speaker 1: worked you know, for most of my childhood more than
- 19:22Speaker 1: one job, and he wasn't at my track. Me couldn't
- 19:26Speaker 1: make this one track meet I had. And he says,
- 19:28Speaker 1: you know, if you ever it was really hot outside
- 19:31Speaker 1: and work her job, He's like, if it ever gets
- 19:34Speaker 1: too hard, or you know, you feel like you can't breathe,
- 19:37Speaker 1: it's okay to stuff. And somewhere in that six hundred
- 19:41Speaker 1: or eight hundred or whatever existence it was, I decided up,
- 19:46Speaker 1: Yeah it was too hot. I decided to stop. But
- 19:51Speaker 1: it's interesting how you know we we perceived things even
- 19:56Speaker 1: as children as being difficult, and that still the training
- 20:00Speaker 1: point in my life because my mom um, you know,
- 20:03Speaker 1: she's she's always told us, you know, first and foremost,
- 20:08Speaker 1: don't waste your money, right right, right? Yeah, my mom she's,
- 20:12Speaker 1: she's she's a tough cookie. But I think that uh
- 20:16Speaker 1: and stilling a strong work ethic in us um is
- 20:19Speaker 1: what my parents always tried to do with me and
- 20:21Speaker 1: my siblings. Then that's something that's definitely carried with me
- 20:25Speaker 1: onto the field of play as an athlete. Now, now
- 20:28Speaker 1: let's talk. Let's talk about that story. I want to
- 20:30Speaker 1: gloss over because I think young people who read the
- 20:33Speaker 1: book there that you read it as well as adults.
- 20:35Speaker 1: You know that point that you feel that you need
- 20:38Speaker 1: to give up. Did you feel that you've reached your
- 20:41Speaker 1: point of frustration or you feel you maxed out? That's
- 20:44Speaker 1: what you thought at that point when you was running
- 20:46Speaker 1: the race and then you was giving it out and
- 20:48Speaker 1: just because you're giving it out, realized that you don't
- 20:51Speaker 1: always take it, you know, because you didn't really push yourself.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Do you feel you push yourself to that point when
- 20:57Speaker 1: you decided to stop or you just heard your father's
- 21:00Speaker 1: is allowing you to just skip out on this moment?
- 21:04Speaker 1: What was that? What was that? What was that moment
- 21:06Speaker 1: because you know, you because your mom gave me some
- 21:08Speaker 1: advice that you know you have to you want something,
- 21:10Speaker 1: you have to work for, and you wrote that in
- 21:12Speaker 1: your book. And so your brother, your brother looked at you,
- 21:15Speaker 1: like you what you're doing? You were winning? Stop, you
- 21:19Speaker 1: were winning. So so there was a lot of things
- 21:22Speaker 1: running your head. I think from a very start of
- 21:24Speaker 1: that race that led you to make a decision that
- 21:27Speaker 1: was a very abrupt and without they even thought thinking
- 21:30Speaker 1: about the process. Because a lot of people make those
- 21:32Speaker 1: decisions in life, whether it's going to school or jobs
- 21:35Speaker 1: or relationships, and instead of they regret those decisions. Thank goodness,
- 21:40Speaker 1: your your decisions to stop running was wasn't one of
- 21:43Speaker 1: those life changing decisions. You know, you can always just
- 21:45Speaker 1: get on the track the next day, but a lot
- 21:47Speaker 1: of people do welcous through those steps where you made
- 21:51Speaker 1: that decision to walk away in that race. Well again,
- 21:54Speaker 1: I mean I was really, uh, this is pretty early.
- 21:58Speaker 1: I'm not even sure ivis and Liddle school yet. And
- 22:01Speaker 1: I think that that particular situation, if you're young or old,
- 22:06Speaker 1: we can all, like you said, you can learn from
- 22:09Speaker 1: I've had moments like that throughout my career. Where I
- 22:12Speaker 1: feel like maybe something is too difficult, or this situation
- 22:17Speaker 1: might be too hard, and of course it may be
- 22:20Speaker 1: easier to walk away. As one of very few athletes
- 22:25Speaker 1: of color on the United States fencing teams and as
- 22:29Speaker 1: the only Muslim woman in hijab on the United States
- 22:33Speaker 1: Olympic team, there's no part of my story that's ever
- 22:37Speaker 1: been easy, and a lot of it has to do with,
- 22:40Speaker 1: you know, traveling this this road that not other people
- 22:45Speaker 1: who look like me have done before. So you do
- 22:50Speaker 1: reach that kind of crossroad in your life where you say, Okay,
- 22:54Speaker 1: I haven't seen it done before, I'm not sure it's possible.
- 22:58Speaker 1: I know that it's gonna be hard, and I could.
- 23:01Speaker 1: It's much easier to say, Okay, I'm not going to
- 23:03Speaker 1: do it because it's too difficult or I'm not sure
- 23:06Speaker 1: if it's possible. And my entire life has been a
- 23:10Speaker 1: leaf of face. And I think that my faith in
- 23:14Speaker 1: my journey being more having more purpose than just it
- 23:19Speaker 1: being about me, has led me to have this type
- 23:23Speaker 1: of tenacity to keep pushing forward and to be proud
- 23:27Speaker 1: of who I am, and be proud of my skin,
- 23:30Speaker 1: and be proud of my job, and and say that
- 23:33Speaker 1: this is who I am, and I don't really care
- 23:35Speaker 1: if you if you like it or not. I'm going
- 23:38Speaker 1: to create a feat at the table, not just for me,
- 23:41Speaker 1: but people who look like me. And that has been
- 23:44Speaker 1: something that I've been very steadfast and determined to do
- 23:48Speaker 1: from the time, you know, I really set foot on
- 23:52Speaker 1: the Sensing strip at twelve years old. Now it's interesting
- 23:55Speaker 1: you're saying that because the fact that you have a
- 23:57Speaker 1: fashion line and uh, it's called Louis right after my grandmother,
- 24:02Speaker 1: your grandmother. I went to the website and I went, wow,
- 24:05Speaker 1: this looks very good, looks very very fashion forward. And
- 24:09Speaker 1: so what made you go into that line? Because you know,
- 24:12Speaker 1: this is just me alright, I'm gonna just say this.
- 24:14Speaker 1: You know, because reading your story, I constantly you constantly
- 24:18Speaker 1: wanted to have fun, You constantly want to be a
- 24:21Speaker 1: regular person, but your but your lifestyle. People always wanted
- 24:25Speaker 1: to treat you different when you walked in the room
- 24:27Speaker 1: or I had not remarked, so bullied you, especially in
- 24:30Speaker 1: your middle school, in your high school years. And then
- 24:33Speaker 1: you come out with a fashion line. And we're gonna
- 24:35Speaker 1: talk about the doll in a minute, but let's talk
- 24:37Speaker 1: about that and the importance of designing that and laying
- 24:40Speaker 1: out a footprint of who you are and what people
- 24:43Speaker 1: can do and uh in this in this lifestyle. Yeah. So,
- 24:47Speaker 1: as a sports ambassador for the US State Department and
- 24:52Speaker 1: also as a public figure within the Muslim community for
- 24:55Speaker 1: a really long time, I've had, you know, events where
- 24:58Speaker 1: I'm speaking in front of you know, a thousand, two thousand,
- 25:01Speaker 1: three thousand people. And as a Muslim woman, I want
- 25:04Speaker 1: to be modest in what I wear. So I struggled
- 25:08Speaker 1: to find fashionable, modest options in the US market, to
- 25:13Speaker 1: be honest, and I was ordering a lot of things
- 25:16Speaker 1: from overseas, and I just kind of arrived at a
- 25:19Speaker 1: point in my life where I'm like, you know what,
- 25:21Speaker 1: there's a void, there's a need for this in the
- 25:24Speaker 1: United States. Nobody's doing it well. And my siblings and
- 25:28Speaker 1: I decided that we would do that. So we literally
- 25:31Speaker 1: started our company in Los Angeles a leap of faith
- 25:35Speaker 1: and really out of necessity. It was time for there
- 25:40Speaker 1: to be something that's made here in the United States
- 25:43Speaker 1: for women who want to dress modestly but also be fashionable.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Being modest doesn't mean being douty or wearing dark colors.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I mean muscle women like anyone else, want to express
- 25:53Speaker 1: ourselves through what our what we wear, and it just
- 25:57Speaker 1: seemed very fitting for me. Am I so links to
- 26:00Speaker 1: start the company really quickly. I went to Rwanda last
- 26:05Speaker 1: summer UM on like a service trip for the State's
- 26:09Speaker 1: department and with a nonprofit, and it's really interesting to
- 26:13Speaker 1: see a country that's experienced um such a traumatic event
- 26:18Speaker 1: within the last years and how toxpope with it. They
- 26:22Speaker 1: talk about the genocide every day, They have a memorial,
- 26:26Speaker 1: they have memorial museums, and they have these different um
- 26:29Speaker 1: trips where they're constantly bringing people and it's very new.
- 26:32Speaker 1: There's a lot of tears that are still shed because
- 26:35Speaker 1: you know, like generations were lost and you have people
- 26:40Speaker 1: who committed you know, the killing next to survivors having
- 26:44Speaker 1: to live side by side. But I think what's really
- 26:47Speaker 1: what's really important to learn about Rwanda is that they
- 26:50Speaker 1: talk about what happened. They educate their kids so that
- 26:53Speaker 1: it doesn't happen again. And that's something that I think
- 26:56Speaker 1: we're failing miserably as Americans because we don't talk about
- 26:59Speaker 1: our history if it's bad, or if it's in any
- 27:02Speaker 1: way shape or forming close, black or brown bodies, and
- 27:06Speaker 1: I think that's how we arrive at this moment in
- 27:09Speaker 1: time where you have, you know, so much police brutality,
- 27:12Speaker 1: you have families being separated as supporters because you know,
- 27:16Speaker 1: we we failed to educate ourselves on our own history
- 27:20Speaker 1: and what committed were great. I want to tell everybody,
- 27:23Speaker 1: please buy her book, it's called Proud. Please buy her
- 27:26Speaker 1: doll in the Sheiro line, Please buy her fashion line.
- 27:29Speaker 1: She's a she's a marketing genius, and she's a social
- 27:32Speaker 1: activist and she's creating change when she walks out the door.

- 29:16Speaker 1: the word I've never used on a show. But I'm
- 29:17Speaker 1: gonna use you to her because she's eclectic. She was
- 29:20Speaker 1: the first African American to receive a PhD and social
- 29:23Speaker 1: work from my alma alma Mallor University Houston Graduate School
- 29:28Speaker 1: of Social Work. In two thousand two. She earned a
- 29:30Speaker 1: master's in public health from the University of Texas Health
- 29:33Speaker 1: Science Center School of Public Health and a Bachelor of
- 29:37Speaker 1: Science degree a chemistry from the Historic Third Word straight
- 29:41Speaker 1: out of Third World Texas, Texas Southern University, where she
- 29:44Speaker 1: was the receiption recipient of a twenty level Distinguished Alumni Award.
- 29:48Speaker 1: That's huge. That's huge right there. She's a social scientist
- 29:52Speaker 1: and inner spirit life coach. Please welcome to Money Making Conversation.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Dr Melanie Wilson. Hello, Hello, and Sean. What's that enough
- 30:03Speaker 1: that doesn't enough about you? Does enough about it? I
- 30:07Speaker 1: was like, who, here's that person? You don't guess that person?
- 30:10Speaker 1: You're absolutely correct. It is pretty effective. And people often
- 30:14Speaker 1: wonder how the journey brought me here. There the things
- 30:17Speaker 1: that I'm doing now that I'm passionate about it that
- 30:19Speaker 1: I love, which is related to strengthening the inner court.
- 30:23Speaker 1: And I tell you, um, I didn't realize that you
- 30:26Speaker 1: will a love my to the university. Man, well so
- 30:30Speaker 1: we are cougars. Yes, man, we are true cougus. You're
- 30:32Speaker 1: tiger a cougar at all? About that you look at
- 30:40Speaker 1: you are the movie av a talk that you you
- 30:42Speaker 1: got all the beast of the jungle out there, the
- 30:45Speaker 1: big five, the big the big five, as they say.
- 30:47Speaker 1: When I appreciate you having me on, thank you so
- 30:51Speaker 1: much for the invitation. I'm glad to be here. Well,
- 30:53Speaker 1: first of all, you know, I'm glad to have you
- 30:55Speaker 1: on the show. And I want to talk about that
- 30:58Speaker 1: education might always talk about. See I changed my major
- 31:01Speaker 1: several times before I eventually got a degree of mathematics
- 31:04Speaker 1: and my minor and sociology. And you know, not saying
- 31:08Speaker 1: that you change your degree, but I always like to
- 31:11Speaker 1: see people who allow themselves to expand allow themselves to say,
- 31:15Speaker 1: not be pigeonholed. And I looked at your degree in
- 31:17Speaker 1: social work, you know, public health, uh, chemistry. That diversity
- 31:22Speaker 1: really allows you to communicate a lot of different levels
- 31:25Speaker 1: and to be able to walk into the room and
- 31:27Speaker 1: be very comfortable when you speak. Is that God is correct?
- 31:31Speaker 1: That is correct? And I tell you I was really um,
- 31:34Speaker 1: I was just that obedient child, and you know when
- 31:37Speaker 1: my dad said, need to go to text or southing
- 31:40Speaker 1: and major in chemistry, and that's what I did. And
- 31:44Speaker 1: I did that and I enjoyed that until I had
- 31:47Speaker 1: an opportunity to work with the Court and of Energy
- 31:49Speaker 1: one summer for an internship, a summer internship, and we
- 31:53Speaker 1: were dowing auto clay. You know, it was Colic paltoption research,
- 31:57Speaker 1: and we were working with auto clay and I would
- 32:00Speaker 1: just in the process and I was like saying to myself,
- 32:03Speaker 1: I just can't imagine working in a lab like this,
- 32:07Speaker 1: you know, for the rest of my life. I want
- 32:09Speaker 1: to have healthy babies. I'm not sure this is really
- 32:11Speaker 1: a good fit for me. But I was always that
- 32:14Speaker 1: obedient child. I said, you know, I've come too far
- 32:18Speaker 1: not to go on and finishes with the degree. For
- 32:20Speaker 1: I went on and I got the degree, and I
- 32:21Speaker 1: went into UM the master's program here in the health
- 32:25Speaker 1: Frankston and in in Houston at the University of Texas. And
- 32:28Speaker 1: when I saw that they were having initially in toxicology,
- 32:31Speaker 1: but when I saw they were having so much fun
- 32:33Speaker 1: and and family and community health, I was like, you
- 32:36Speaker 1: know what, San, That's where I need to be because
- 32:39Speaker 1: I just spent my personality. I've always spend a compassionate
- 32:43Speaker 1: and epathetic type of person and so that's when I
- 32:47Speaker 1: started navigating my sales towards in a direction that I
- 32:51Speaker 1: was really comfortable with. And so from there, um, I
- 32:55Speaker 1: just kind of blocked them and and had the opportunity
- 32:57Speaker 1: to go on and get my doctors in social work,
- 33:00Speaker 1: which was which was as phenomenal, and from it and
- 33:02Speaker 1: now I am just doing what I chose and to
- 33:07Speaker 1: do I and I just I think it's a great,
- 33:09Speaker 1: incredible journey, and I would encourage people, you know what,
- 33:11Speaker 1: no matter what you're doing, it it's not what you
- 33:13Speaker 1: really want to do, you can always navigate yourself and
- 33:17Speaker 1: move towards the directions that most makes you. Laugh doctor doctor, Um,
- 33:24Speaker 1: don't give you credit now, don't. We're just laying out
- 33:25Speaker 1: it gives a lot of docs out there. There aren't doctors,
- 33:27Speaker 1: you know. So I'm just going to say the whole world, doctor,
- 33:31Speaker 1: how do I just want to navigate that? How do
- 33:33Speaker 1: want to make a decision to to create change in
- 33:36Speaker 1: their life, especially when they just sit around based on fear,
- 33:39Speaker 1: because that's why people don't make change. They're afraid. How
- 33:41Speaker 1: does want to navigate that change. Well, you know, the
- 33:45Speaker 1: first thing they have to do in that process, and
- 33:48Speaker 1: I've been refer to it as understanding this journey that
- 33:52Speaker 1: we're actually on. And that's how the inter spirit part
- 33:55Speaker 1: comes into play with um, what I do and what
- 33:59Speaker 1: I gonna help, you know, God people into that direction
- 34:03Speaker 1: in terms of navigation, and I think that people understand
- 34:06Speaker 1: that they have the power us who we to choose
- 34:10Speaker 1: the mission that they want to have in this life.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Then the first step is to first identify and understand
- 34:18Speaker 1: that you have that power. I think a lot of
- 34:20Speaker 1: times people feel powerless in this process. So you have
- 34:24Speaker 1: to kind of break it down. And I always say
- 34:26Speaker 1: you trying to have to deconstruct to reconstruct your life.
- 34:30Speaker 1: And when you know with themselves that you know you
- 34:33Speaker 1: are just not content with what the outcome is and
- 34:38Speaker 1: and in the direction that things are going, that's the
- 34:41Speaker 1: first step is to identify that you know that within stuff,
- 34:44Speaker 1: and then you have to figure out what it is
- 34:47Speaker 1: you want to do. You know, what is the mission
- 34:49Speaker 1: that you want to be on and develop an action
- 34:52Speaker 1: plan to achieve that, to to get on the right trust,
- 34:57Speaker 1: to to live the life of your deeds, to do
- 34:59Speaker 1: things if you want. Let's Michelle, let me give you
- 35:01Speaker 1: an example of what it is that I do so
- 35:04Speaker 1: so wizards can understand how this process works. And this
- 35:08Speaker 1: is a good analogy. Let's say you're drinking a cup
- 35:11Speaker 1: of coffee and somebody bumps into you and you still
- 35:15Speaker 1: the coffee. Okay, you still the coffee. You know why
- 35:18Speaker 1: you fill the coffee because coffee is what was in
- 35:21Speaker 1: the cup. It seems within the cup you wouldn't still
- 35:25Speaker 1: the tea. And so the analogy that I'm making is
- 35:29Speaker 1: is what's inside of you when you get bumped in,
- 35:32Speaker 1: like when you are unsure in life, when things are
- 35:36Speaker 1: happening to you, what's inside of you is what comes up.
- 35:40Speaker 1: And so as an industry a life coach, and when
- 35:42Speaker 1: I focus on that, foods up the spirit. When I
- 35:45Speaker 1: focused on instructening that inside of a person, that's how
- 35:48Speaker 1: they get out of that fear as they're able to
- 35:51Speaker 1: make the tangible step to do what you're talking about.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Because what comes what's inside of you is what comes out.
- 35:59Speaker 1: So it is exide that comes out of angers inside
- 36:02Speaker 1: when life functions, when things happen, that's what comes out.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Its rage, it jealousy of resentment. But if I can
- 36:11Speaker 1: get people to strengthen the other things that should be
- 36:15Speaker 1: inside of their court, which is love, joy, peace, kindness, business, facefulness,
- 36:22Speaker 1: the most important self control, then they have the ability
- 36:28Speaker 1: to do what you're saying to turn it around. And
- 36:31Speaker 1: that's and that's kind of what I focused on. You
- 36:33Speaker 1: cannot protect anybody's the point that they can't experience life.
- 36:37Speaker 1: You gotta allow them experienced life. But while they're experience
- 36:40Speaker 1: in life is that's that's the part that you know,
- 36:42Speaker 1: I really am enjoying this conversation because you know it's
- 36:46Speaker 1: what your your social scientists and your inner spirit life coach,
- 36:50Speaker 1: which I think is really important to hear on this
- 36:52Speaker 1: show because people want to make change. That's why I
- 36:55Speaker 1: love the fact that that that millennial generation decided to say,
- 36:59Speaker 1: you know something, I don't want to work for anybody.
- 37:00Speaker 1: I want to work for me. And they get really
- 37:03Speaker 1: cute because of that. I was listening to a show
- 37:05Speaker 1: driving in this morning. It was really cuteing, um, you know, millennials,
- 37:09Speaker 1: because they don't save. I was trying to figure out, Okay,
- 37:11Speaker 1: when I was twenty eight, what was I saving? When
- 37:13Speaker 1: I was thirty four, what was I saving? I'm trying
- 37:15Speaker 1: to figure out what is When did the rules? When
- 37:18Speaker 1: did the rules that that that that that eighteen to
- 37:20Speaker 1: thirty four age group, and each each generation was saving money,
- 37:24Speaker 1: they were that they were that worthy to stay. You
- 37:26Speaker 1: know something, I'm a save for my future, you know something.
- 37:29Speaker 1: When you're that age, there is no future. The future
- 37:31Speaker 1: is now. Why can I get my car? Where can
- 37:34Speaker 1: I get my house? Where can I give me some
- 37:36Speaker 1: new shoes? And so when I hear people criticize millennials,
- 37:38Speaker 1: I'm going like, Okay, are you kidding me? Are you
- 37:41Speaker 1: kidding me? At twenty nine years old? Who do you
- 37:43Speaker 1: know was saving money? Who was thinking about that the
- 37:46Speaker 1: stock market at twenty nine years of age on a
- 37:48Speaker 1: regular job. You know, if you if your company was
- 37:52Speaker 1: like I worked at IBM and they had that little
- 37:55Speaker 1: sharing program. You you pay a dollar, they pay a dollar,
- 37:57Speaker 1: you know, and that that helped me out, that got
- 37:59Speaker 1: me to that into the stock game. But again that
- 38:03Speaker 1: was my company had that program at that time. I'm
- 38:06Speaker 1: not saying that program exists today because people hold you
- 38:08Speaker 1: accountable everything you said in public. But Sean said this
- 38:11Speaker 1: he way back then, way back then, when I was working. Now,
- 38:15Speaker 1: they might not do that right now, So don't hold
- 38:17Speaker 1: me account, but I'll just letting you know is that
- 38:19Speaker 1: when I look at people criticized, there's so many people
- 38:21Speaker 1: want to criticize people when they want to be themselves,
- 38:24Speaker 1: when they want to make decisions for themselves that benefit them,
- 38:28Speaker 1: that they get criticized for that. And I just feel
- 38:31Speaker 1: that that generation is being pressurized, especially with social media.
- 38:36Speaker 1: You post the picture, you're like, you don't like share,
- 38:40Speaker 1: you know, remember right I did? I posted one of
- 38:43Speaker 1: my videos and somebody told me, you know, I look gay? Huh?
- 38:48Speaker 1: I don't know. How do you look at I was
- 38:50Speaker 1: of my interview? Just say I look at other person?
- 38:53Speaker 1: You bear too dark? Your beer too dark? Okay? What
- 38:56Speaker 1: the heck is this? What these are the criticist that
- 38:59Speaker 1: you get in social media, and so you have to
- 39:01Speaker 1: deal with these issues about okay, if you if you
- 39:04Speaker 1: take that personal, then you could be walking down the
- 39:06Speaker 1: street trying to walk in a certain way. Well, people
- 39:08Speaker 1: talking about out walk. I don't know what that means.
- 39:11Speaker 1: You know you know what my beer too dog got?
- 39:13Speaker 1: I gotta change their look, you know. But people can
- 39:15Speaker 1: get it to your heads with these with these negative statements,
- 39:19Speaker 1: and they can change your your objectives, your plans. And
- 39:23Speaker 1: so it's good to listen to young people when they
- 39:26Speaker 1: when they unsure, just calm them down, say what's your
- 39:30Speaker 1: what's your problem? Don't don't don't ignore that, ignore that
- 39:32Speaker 1: ignorant people are talking. The ignorant people know the other things,
- 39:37Speaker 1: you know the other thing. They'll be reshigned if they
- 39:39Speaker 1: will can to suppress or ignore who they really are,
- 39:45Speaker 1: to will this NAS for society, for their currents, for
- 39:49Speaker 1: their files, for for for all these other things. They
- 39:53Speaker 1: well this n and they really suppressed who they really
- 39:56Speaker 1: are because of judgment, because of what they see other
- 40:00Speaker 1: people may think or say about them. And so what
- 40:03Speaker 1: you have is with society of people who can't be real.
- 40:06Speaker 1: They can't be real, being real it's not accepted. And
- 40:11Speaker 1: so that's why people find themselves in the situations that
- 40:14Speaker 1: they're in because they're not authentic. They're not living in
- 40:18Speaker 1: authentic life. And that's why we do what we do.
- 40:22Speaker 1: You know, we focus on peeling about those lads. We
- 40:25Speaker 1: allow people to understand that you can live and authentic
- 40:28Speaker 1: life and be proud of it. Many people are wearing
- 40:31Speaker 1: a mask. And I'm gonna tell you something else to Sean.
- 40:33Speaker 1: It doesn't matter that their social economic status is. It
- 40:37Speaker 1: doesn't matter if they have J D or m D
- 40:39Speaker 1: behind their names. It doesn't matter. All types of people
- 40:43Speaker 1: are walking around here with the mask on. With the
- 40:46Speaker 1: mask on, I've taken that mask off. I would tell
- 40:52Speaker 1: people removed to stop sign, and you take off the
- 40:54Speaker 1: removed to stop sign because people are holding up stop
- 40:56Speaker 1: sized in front of their face, stopping them for success,
- 40:59Speaker 1: stopping them from an opportunity to move forward. First of all,
- 41:02Speaker 1: I want to say thank you for coming on my show. Secondly,
- 41:05Speaker 1: I exec you know, because you know, when you can
- 41:07Speaker 1: start being successful, I like to believe a success you
- 41:09Speaker 1: start having regulars. I like to see if I can
- 41:12Speaker 1: have you as a regular on my show. Absolutely. After that,
- 41:16Speaker 1: we're trying to build a build a platform, you know,
- 41:19Speaker 1: and and touch this to another level for so we
- 41:21Speaker 1: can share people's stories. So everyone can here going to
- 41:24Speaker 1: realize they are not alone and facing many of life
- 41:28Speaker 1: challenges and that they can overcome whatever they're going through,
- 41:31Speaker 1: no matter how close it is to Shan and you
- 41:35Speaker 1: keep and now I'm coming to Houston and I want
- 41:38Speaker 1: you on my show. I'm coming. I'm just dropping that bomb,
- 41:40Speaker 1: right now Rushaun's coming. Everybody keep women. Thank you, Dr Lawson.
- 41:48Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more from Marsha McDonald and
- 41:51Speaker 1: money making conversations. Don't touch that down. When I was
- 41:56Speaker 1: an FBI agent, I was aware of home title fraud.
- 41:59Speaker 1: There was little we could do to stop it. Now
- 42:01Speaker 1: there's home title lock. This online bank was for closing
- 42:04Speaker 1: on us. They even had documents that I signed for
- 42:07Speaker 1: a home equity loan. Only I didn't want a nightmare.
- 42:10Speaker 1: I didn't have home title lock then, but you bet
- 42:13Speaker 1: I had it. Now. Your home's title is online where
- 42:16Speaker 1: international thieves can find it. They'll forge your title, take
- 42:20Speaker 1: out loans using your equity, or sell your home outright.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Identity theft programs and insurance don't protect you for just
- 42:27Speaker 1: pennies a day. Home title lock predicts my most valuable asset,
- 42:31Speaker 1: my home. As a police officer, I've seen what home
- 42:34Speaker 1: title fraud doest of victims. So I registered for home
- 42:37Speaker 1: title lock, and when I did, I discovered some thief
- 42:40Speaker 1: had already taken me off my home's title. Thank god
- 42:43Speaker 1: I've found out in time. Registered now for a free

- 43:11Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, it's time you stop thinking about your
- 43:13Speaker 1: dreams and put some plans into action. Hid this for
- 43:17Speaker 1: Sean McDonald. My guess is on the line. I'm so
- 43:21Speaker 1: just young man since Las Vegas. I believe Las Vegas.
- 43:24Speaker 1: The last time I physically saw him, you know, we
- 43:26Speaker 1: said we're gonna talk. Four years later we talked. My
- 43:31Speaker 1: neck is an incredibly talented film and television actor whose
- 43:35Speaker 1: credits spanned comedies and dramas such as The Forty year
- 43:38Speaker 1: Old Virgin. Think Like a Man, Think like a Man too.
- 43:41Speaker 1: That's where became friends Almost Christmas Top five. That was
- 43:46Speaker 1: a very very good movie with Chris Rock. Las Vegas.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Saw him in there with Morgan Freeman doing this thing
- 43:52Speaker 1: showtimes Weeds. That's when I became a fan Weeds. I love.
- 43:56Speaker 1: I said, who is this talent to do? I used
- 43:58Speaker 1: to watch Weeds on the regular base CBS. Is a
- 44:01Speaker 1: Good Wife and many more. He's appearing next in the
- 44:03Speaker 1: movie Night School with Kevin Hard and Tiffany Hattish that
- 44:06Speaker 1: would be out in September, uh fact, September twenty eight,
- 44:09Speaker 1: and he's shooting a new ABC series, A Million Little Things.
- 44:13Speaker 1: He's been nominated for n double A, CV Image Awards,
- 44:16Speaker 1: MTV Movie Awards, and Screen Actor Guil Awards. Please walk
- 44:19Speaker 1: with the money making conversations Romney Malcolm, Hey, what's up? Man?
- 44:25Speaker 1: Thank you? Thank you when you right four years ago.
- 44:31Speaker 1: And you know what, I never forgot run you never forgotten.
- 44:36Speaker 1: I was actually right this this brother want to talk
- 44:38Speaker 1: to me? Hey, man, you know something you know Robinney. Uh.
- 44:42Speaker 1: First of all, Man, congratulations on your success. Let's let's
- 44:45Speaker 1: get that out of the way first, because of the
- 44:47Speaker 1: fact that you know, it's an interesting era that we
- 44:50Speaker 1: have with African American talent on town. I know, you
- 44:54Speaker 1: know your Trinidaddy, and you know, let's let's put that
- 44:56Speaker 1: out there. Let's put that out there correctly. And so
- 45:00Speaker 1: so we're working. We're working. We're working not just on
- 45:04Speaker 1: reality shows. You know, that was a period where reality
- 45:06Speaker 1: shows dominated African American presence on television. So what do
- 45:11Speaker 1: you think is happening at the just just feel us
- 45:13Speaker 1: a little bit of detail about about what's going on
- 45:16Speaker 1: in your world, and we're gonna go to some funny
- 45:18Speaker 1: things that you're doing. And I saw that. I saw
- 45:20Speaker 1: that prison logic. Man, we gotta talk about that. But
- 45:21Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about mine, all right, man. And that's
- 45:25Speaker 1: the well. Right after that, I want to start by
- 45:28Speaker 1: saying thank you, really seriously, thank you. I really appreciate
- 45:31Speaker 1: you having me on and my brother following up on
- 45:33Speaker 1: your word. I appreciate that too, um. And I want
- 45:36Speaker 1: to congratulate you on hall of your success as well.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Thank you. Um uh yeah. I remem when we first met,
- 45:41Speaker 1: like I think it might have been on the on
- 45:43Speaker 1: the Steve Harvey Show, and I was but man, did
- 45:46Speaker 1: I did that? Brother? Man? You were solid dude, man.
- 45:48Speaker 1: And so anyway to be here talking to you with
- 45:50Speaker 1: the privilege to answer your question my duty. I think
- 45:52Speaker 1: that's something. I think that part of the major shift
- 45:55Speaker 1: is I believe to like the report came out, um
- 45:59Speaker 1: you know maybe like uh four years ago, it would
- 46:05Speaker 1: basically show that African American dollars responded like African Americans
- 46:10Speaker 1: as a whole responded, not as a whole, but just
- 46:13Speaker 1: the general audience of Africa, you know, TV audience African
- 46:16Speaker 1: responded to advertising, and I think that that kind of
- 46:22Speaker 1: set off an alarm uh um. And there were shows
- 46:25Speaker 1: that were kind of pioneering the way for that, shows
- 46:28Speaker 1: like Kevin Hart's UM, Real Husbands, h Hollywood. You know,
- 46:35Speaker 1: I can't remember some of the other shows. But because
- 46:37Speaker 1: the running pick my tone is a little early thing,
- 46:40Speaker 1: we're gonna put it out there. You know, Anthony Anderson's show,
- 46:43Speaker 1: you know that Blackish, you know, and I remember I
- 46:45Speaker 1: talked like I remember before he came out, Anthony's called
- 46:48Speaker 1: me and I said, Anthony that title man's crazy, and
- 46:51Speaker 1: I brought him on the show. I still supported it,
- 46:53Speaker 1: brought him on Steve Show, helped launching launch of show,
- 46:56Speaker 1: had him set in for Steve, him and uh Tracy
- 46:59Speaker 1: Ellis Raw set in and four hour show to promote
- 47:01Speaker 1: because I always know, you gotta put the brand out there.
- 47:03Speaker 1: That's been the main thing about my theme has been
- 47:06Speaker 1: you gotta if people don't know you, they can't find you,
- 47:09Speaker 1: they can't find you, you gotta give them a choice.
- 47:13Speaker 1: And that's you know, and that's the thing. You know,
- 47:14Speaker 1: and look, I know people in your audiences are screaming
- 47:16Speaker 1: right now, don't forget scandal, don't forget by all the
- 47:19Speaker 1: day this shows, you know, don't get And they're right,
- 47:22Speaker 1: you know, but a lot of these shows came along,
- 47:25Speaker 1: and you know, um and a lot of the incentivize
- 47:30Speaker 1: these networks to begin, you know, having more diversity because
- 47:35Speaker 1: they saw that actually the black audience turned to support
- 47:38Speaker 1: you know, black content. And you know also like, uh,
- 47:42Speaker 1: you know, I grew up in an era where you know,
- 47:44Speaker 1: we watched Dynasty and the Dukes of Hazards and shows.
- 47:50Speaker 1: That's what there was, you know what I mean. Don't
- 47:52Speaker 1: get me wrong. I like Jeffersons and my favorite was
- 47:55Speaker 1: always the Jeffersons and and and and good Times. But
- 47:59Speaker 1: the reality there was is that we didn't have as
- 48:01Speaker 1: much representation. Now that there is much representation, people choose it,
- 48:05Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, And people like to see
- 48:07Speaker 1: something of reflective likeness. They relate to it more, right,
- 48:09Speaker 1: often the content of speaking about things that they can
- 48:11Speaker 1: relate to. And he was on the marketing dollars and
- 48:15Speaker 1: so you know, when we see an advertisement, were actually
- 48:18Speaker 1: influenced by it, and that makes a huge different to
- 48:20Speaker 1: the people that are marketing you know, especially especially now
- 48:24Speaker 1: that people can go anywhere to watch television. You know,
- 48:27Speaker 1: and I read this book was breaking down how like
- 48:30Speaker 1: the people who even shop at Walmart don't even own
- 48:34Speaker 1: like external hardware for their televisions, meaning they don't have cable,
- 48:38Speaker 1: they don't have any kind of box. They're still watching
- 48:40Speaker 1: the regular network television. That plays a role in it
- 48:44Speaker 1: as well. But anyway, I'm sorry, I'm just going on.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no no, no, Malcole.
- 48:49Speaker 1: That's what this show is about. That's why it's called
- 48:50Speaker 1: money Making Conversation. That's why I ru Sean McDonald's host
- 48:54Speaker 1: because I can bring talent like you. We're gonna talk
- 48:56Speaker 1: about your TV, You're gonna talk about all that, but
- 48:58Speaker 1: this you know, your mindset, because people need to understand
- 49:01Speaker 1: that there's a three sixty platform for a guy like
- 49:03Speaker 1: you to be successful as about as you are. You
- 49:05Speaker 1: you understand the business, you understand why you're not working,
- 49:08Speaker 1: why are you being chosen for roles, and how you
- 49:10Speaker 1: consistently can be there, And a lot of people don't
- 49:13Speaker 1: understand it. They really just think that just show up
- 49:15Speaker 1: and you just are just you for a role. If
- 49:17Speaker 1: you want longevity. You have to understand what you're walking
- 49:20Speaker 1: into and you're saying that, you're saying it, Yeah, you
- 49:24Speaker 1: really do. And you know the thing, uh, you know
- 49:28Speaker 1: that I think that we under I think that the
- 49:30Speaker 1: thing that we underestimate in the process of doing all
- 49:32Speaker 1: of this is that I've seen a lot of people
- 49:35Speaker 1: come before me, and um, I've seen them pissed off
- 49:39Speaker 1: this as many you know, big main people as I've
- 49:41Speaker 1: supposedly pissed off. And you know, because the fact that
- 49:45Speaker 1: they didn't want to do a job, you chose to
- 49:48Speaker 1: honor their integrity before honoring you know, their pockets. And
- 49:52Speaker 1: you know that's not a language that spoke very common
- 49:56Speaker 1: in in in uh in the HollyHood. And so people
- 49:59Speaker 1: with egos with we take it personally when you turned
- 50:01Speaker 1: down that projects. But what I have found is that
- 50:06Speaker 1: you know, I founded slay to someone self preservation in
- 50:09Speaker 1: the sense that you know, I never thought this. I
- 50:13Speaker 1: always used to wonder should I get a bigger agents,
- 50:15Speaker 1: should have bigger manager, should do that? But when it
- 50:18Speaker 1: really boils down to it, your best representation of your
- 50:21Speaker 1: body of work in this business, that your best representation.
- 50:25Speaker 1: It will go out and speak on behalf of you
- 50:27Speaker 1: on every fritinal platform we know something about. Like seriously,
- 50:31Speaker 1: when I introduced you at the beginning Weed, which is
- 50:34Speaker 1: on Showtime, Um, that's when I first became a fan
- 50:38Speaker 1: of yours, you know. And it's because you took a character,
- 50:42Speaker 1: you know, and in that world you know, usually it
- 50:45Speaker 1: is rough, but you played it like it was. It
- 50:50Speaker 1: was funny, dangerous. Does that make sense? And and and
- 50:55Speaker 1: so when you when you can take a role and
- 50:57Speaker 1: then you can shape it, and I think that's what
- 50:59Speaker 1: you do, so feel that's what you do so well
- 51:01Speaker 1: with all your roles, you know, whether you play a butler,
- 51:03Speaker 1: or you playing some suave dude, or you playing a player,
- 51:07Speaker 1: or you playing a doctor or whatever, all these roles
- 51:10Speaker 1: you just shape it. How do you come up? How
- 51:12Speaker 1: do you make a decision on where you're gonna take
- 51:14Speaker 1: these characters? When you when you auditioning, Um, you know
- 51:19Speaker 1: that's the thing. That's like what I'll do, Like I
- 51:21Speaker 1: was doing it yesterday, I was saying for my show,
- 51:23Speaker 1: I just basically take those words and take the scenario.
- 51:26Speaker 1: I don't want to know who you expect me to play.
- 51:28Speaker 1: I want to read it. Just read it like a
- 51:30Speaker 1: book and and then a nature, I just developed an
- 51:33Speaker 1: opinion about every person in the movie. And then I said,
- 51:35Speaker 1: who am I supposed to be playing that dude? Oh,
- 51:38Speaker 1: that dude, he's the so and so. Because I already
- 51:40Speaker 1: have a genuine opinion, I'm not thinking about it of
- 51:43Speaker 1: like thinking about it from the perspective of how should
- 51:46Speaker 1: I play this? No, I'm really just these characters and
- 51:49Speaker 1: to people I trying to think about, can I relate
- 51:52Speaker 1: this to real life and include not vality system and
- 51:56Speaker 1: to some degree or another, it's like, once you know
- 51:58Speaker 1: you can hunt your own food, the game change. Now Okay,
- 52:01Speaker 1: now you know what that means. Now romany, okay, Rushan mcdown.
- 52:07Speaker 1: It's promoting right now before tween, So I got to
- 52:11Speaker 1: be there for the twinter nineteen as well to come
- 52:13Speaker 1: back on this show promoter. Because this is a movie.
- 52:15Speaker 1: I'm just letting everybody know that it's outstanding. Um the
- 52:19Speaker 1: cash If everybody don't know what Regina Hall, one of
- 52:22Speaker 1: the most incredible comedic actresses in the game today has
- 52:27Speaker 1: that has down, has down this brilliant, brilliant and the
- 52:31Speaker 1: fact that you're doing this and but I wanted a
- 52:33Speaker 1: lot of independent people to hear this to let them
- 52:35Speaker 1: know that, yeah, there's no walk of shame and getting
- 52:38Speaker 1: your movie done, there's no walk of shame. And how
- 52:40Speaker 1: you get it distributed. The thing is that it's your dream.
- 52:44Speaker 1: But make sure you you know your tire thing up,
- 52:47Speaker 1: you know, make sure that you have the releases signed off.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Don't just have people talk about I show up. And
- 52:51Speaker 1: then also you get an opportunity to get your soul
- 52:53Speaker 1: and you run around trying to find releases to sign
- 52:55Speaker 1: off on. Be professional from day one, from up start.
- 52:59Speaker 1: And that's really and that's what you did with this movie.
- 53:01Speaker 1: But before we go, I wanted to bring up something
- 53:03Speaker 1: about this this social network that you have called life
- 53:06Speaker 1: management Tribe, you know stuff whoa okay, all right, okay,
- 53:16Speaker 1: So look man, when it really boils down to it,
- 53:18Speaker 1: I spent a lot of time. I used to spend
- 53:20Speaker 1: a lot. I used to be a White House consultant,
- 53:23Speaker 1: like literally the White House have becoming. They found me
- 53:26Speaker 1: in and asked me, oh, you know, how how can
- 53:28Speaker 1: we get better engagement? That kind of thing, and I
- 53:30Speaker 1: would go through my strategies with them. But you know,
- 53:32Speaker 1: I've sent a lot of time on social social media
- 53:35Speaker 1: and when I really stopped and ask myself what was
- 53:37Speaker 1: going on. Was like, you know, I didn't want to
- 53:39Speaker 1: gain nothing that I didn't add any value, you know
- 53:41Speaker 1: what I mean? And so I was like, I would
- 53:43Speaker 1: love to be a part of a social networks that
- 53:45Speaker 1: actually added value, that I could look to that maybe
- 53:48Speaker 1: it inspired me, maybe gave me insight on how to
- 53:50Speaker 1: have better health, but just keep me in the community
- 53:53Speaker 1: of positive people. And you know, with everything going on
- 53:55Speaker 1: in politics right now, people just feel like they can
- 53:58Speaker 1: just be as disrespectful and it's emotionally emotionally inconsiderate as
- 54:02Speaker 1: they want to be. On social networks, you know, you
- 54:05Speaker 1: could build up a huge audience and track a huge
- 54:07Speaker 1: audience to Facebook platform and then out of nowhere, they
- 54:11Speaker 1: change an algorithm and you no longer have access to
- 54:14Speaker 1: to that audience. You got to pay them for the
- 54:16Speaker 1: ardient you attracted today platform. That just all sounds backwards
- 54:19Speaker 1: to me, and I've never been to do that's been
- 54:21Speaker 1: comfortable with the status quo. So I was like, look,
- 54:24Speaker 1: let me just create my own network and I'm just
- 54:26Speaker 1: going to do an experiment. It's just an experiment, and
- 54:28Speaker 1: I want to see if I invest as much time
- 54:31Speaker 1: as I did in other platforms in my own platform,
- 54:36Speaker 1: what what the results be. So that's what I've been
- 54:39Speaker 1: doing in life management. Trial dot com is just basically
- 54:42Speaker 1: that it's just a positive platform to people, you know.
- 54:45Speaker 1: And I also I launch a podcast through which so
- 54:48Speaker 1: I talk about things that are important to me. So
- 54:50Speaker 1: right now I'm going over Anthony Williams book A Medical Medium,
- 54:55Speaker 1: which has some really interesting philosophies, but ultimately man just
- 54:58Speaker 1: a place that adds value. You go, you feel like
- 55:00Speaker 1: you've got some information, you've got some encouragement, people hold
- 55:03Speaker 1: you accountable. We have challenges on this getting its challenges.
- 55:07Speaker 1: We just did a claim, the Clarella Claims Challenge, where
- 55:09Speaker 1: we did Clarella for four days, nothing else, like a detox.
- 55:13Speaker 1: It's like, you know what, It's real stuff, and you know,
- 55:16Speaker 1: for me, that's just that's that's the life I live
- 55:18Speaker 1: and that's what I want to be involved. And as
- 55:19Speaker 1: a result of that, I don't really engage as much
- 55:22Speaker 1: on the more you know, popular platforms because I'm usually
- 55:25Speaker 1: involved in my own platform. But but the reward is
- 55:28Speaker 1: much great of my brother and you know, and I've
- 55:30Speaker 1: learned it ain't about reaching, it ain't about reaching four
- 55:32Speaker 1: hundred million people. It's about reaching the people who want
- 55:35Speaker 1: to reach you. And also it's like adding value to
- 55:37Speaker 1: the people who add value to you, isn't it than
- 55:41Speaker 1: Thank you? Thank you. We're gonna talk soon, and I'm
- 55:44Speaker 1: also going to promote this. Send me a banner so
