- 1:27Speaker 4: Hi, I'm Rashan McDonald.
- 1:29Speaker 6: Welcome to the Money Making Conversation Masterclass show. The interviews
- 1:32Speaker 6: and information this show provides off for everyone. It's time
- 1:35Speaker 6: to start reading other people's success stories and start living
- 1:38Speaker 6: your own. My guess is the director of Candice Parker,
- 1:41Speaker 6: the intimate ESPN film Candice Parker, Unpologetic. Candas is one
- 1:46Speaker 6: of the biggest stars in basketball, a WNBA champion and
- 1:49Speaker 6: pioneer who not only fulfilled the way the expectations of
- 1:52Speaker 6: her being surrounded with this great potential as a young teenager,
- 1:55Speaker 6: but redefine what it means to be a woman's sports
- 1:58Speaker 6: star in the twenty first century. Please, he's welcome the
- 2:00Speaker 6: Money Making Conversation Masterclass.
- 2:02Speaker 4: The director Joey Jacobi. How you doing, Joey, We're doing
- 2:05Speaker 4: really well.
- 2:06Speaker 5: Thank you for having me.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Well.
- 2:08Speaker 6: First of all, you know what I got excited. It
- 2:10Speaker 6: came across my desk. There was a Candas Parker docu
- 2:16Speaker 6: film that was out there, and I got a chance
- 2:18Speaker 6: to interview the director. Because there's a certain mindset, because
- 2:22Speaker 6: you look at things from a certain perspective.
- 2:24Speaker 4: And the first thing I wanted to know, like I
- 2:25Speaker 4: was looking at your.
- 2:26Speaker 6: Background, you know, body of work Inclues Return to Mexico,
- 2:29Speaker 6: To Mexico two thousand and nine, London twenty twelve.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Guess something else you're gonna put.
- 2:36Speaker 5: That actually film?
- 2:37Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 2:38Speaker 6: Absolutely, I know Games of the Opiad twenty twelve and
- 2:42Speaker 6: Sarah and Suzanne twenty fourteen. Now when I look at
- 2:44Speaker 6: that and then I look at the Candas Parker, how
- 2:48Speaker 6: did you feel there was something that you wanted to
- 2:51Speaker 6: navigate your strengths into that particular docu series.
- 2:55Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean yes, I think I've always been. I
- 2:59Speaker 7: started off in sports. I was working with ESPN straight
- 3:04Speaker 7: out of college and worked my way up to being
- 3:07Speaker 7: like a senior producer there, and I became known for
- 3:12Speaker 7: telling stories that were about when things are more when
- 3:16Speaker 7: when sport changes the world and enacts social change. So
- 3:23Speaker 7: one of the first pieces was Return to Mexico City,
- 3:25Speaker 7: in nineteen sixty eight, and you know that was the reason.
- 3:30Speaker 5: That was, you know, that was where where we went
- 3:32Speaker 5: with that.
- 3:32Speaker 7: But Candace is is within my wheelhouse in terms of sports.
- 3:38Speaker 5: But in the later years, I've been doing.
- 3:41Speaker 7: More biopics and really in depth studies of people, and
- 3:47Speaker 7: I connected with Candace, you know, as a fan.
- 3:51Speaker 5: First of all, I was a huge fan of her work.
- 3:54Speaker 7: And there are people that I would look around and
- 3:57Speaker 7: I'm like, you know, when they're talking about goats of
- 3:59Speaker 7: the w N, sometimes Candace's name isn't as high as
- 4:03Speaker 7: I think it deserves to be on those lists. She
- 4:07Speaker 7: is looked over beyond you know, they always are talking
- 4:10Speaker 7: about Sue and Diana Tarassi and you know, we start
- 4:14Speaker 7: to hear a lot of these names before Candace is
- 4:16Speaker 7: and I'm wondering why. And I really wanted to present
- 4:21Speaker 7: a very you know, objective, data driven film where you're seeing,
- 4:26Speaker 7: you know, her work speak for itself and learning about
- 4:29Speaker 7: her journey. And when you really dig deep into Candace,
- 4:32Speaker 7: what's interesting about her is that she is unique to
- 4:36Speaker 7: any of all of these athletes, all of these women athletes,
- 4:39Speaker 7: because she had a child very early in her career,
- 4:43Speaker 7: which she was literally a rookie and had all of
- 4:47Speaker 7: this expectation put on her and still has has has
- 4:51Speaker 7: been one.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Of the greatest.
- 4:52Speaker 7: Beyond that, it's you know when you you also learn
- 4:56Speaker 7: that she was playing nearly the three hundred and sixty
- 5:01Speaker 7: five days a year basketball professionally, and can you imagine
- 5:05Speaker 7: what that puts on the strain on a person's body,
- 5:08Speaker 7: going to Russia, China, Istanbul for the majority of her
- 5:13Speaker 7: year and really looking at the WMBA as a summer
- 5:17Speaker 7: job as like, you know, her side job, her side
- 5:20Speaker 7: hustle because it wasn't paying the bills. And that's the
- 5:24Speaker 7: story for so many other elite women athletes in this country.
- 5:27Speaker 5: They have to go abroad to make a living.
- 5:29Speaker 7: So I really wanted to just show what her life
- 5:32Speaker 7: really encompasses. And there's all of the challenges that this
- 5:35Speaker 7: woman has gone through and still you know been She's
- 5:41Speaker 7: the only w NBA star to ever win a championship
- 5:45Speaker 7: with three different franchises, So you know, it's her.
- 5:48Speaker 5: She's the winning sauce. She's the reason.
- 5:50Speaker 7: It's not you know, it doesn't matter where she goes,
- 5:52Speaker 7: she's going to win. And you know, she had a
- 5:55Speaker 7: lot of unlucky years in Lake in La. You know,
- 5:59Speaker 7: the management there was really messed up. So I feel
- 6:02Speaker 7: like I wanted to just put it put out you know.
- 6:06Speaker 7: I really just objectively looked at her story. Put it
- 6:08Speaker 7: out there, and you can and you did, and you did.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Joy.
- 6:14Speaker 4: I was speaking of Joey Jacobe.
- 6:15Speaker 6: She's the director of the new docu FHM, a biopic
- 6:19Speaker 6: of Candice Parker Unapologetic ESPN Films. The word that keeps
- 6:25Speaker 6: coming up over and over is underrated and underappreciating, you know.
- 6:30Speaker 4: And I never I'm gonna tell you.
- 6:32Speaker 6: I remember I saw it live when Candice Parker won
- 6:36Speaker 6: that slam dunk contest against Jails were there, I saw it,
- 6:41Speaker 6: you know. So that's how And I remember I met
- 6:44Speaker 6: her in the spring and I brought that up to her,
- 6:46Speaker 6: about the impact of that dunk. But I and so
- 6:50Speaker 6: and I realized that, you know, and she told me
- 6:52Speaker 6: her father said, You're more than that dunk, you know,
- 6:55Speaker 6: and not not base your career on that dunk. When
- 6:58Speaker 6: I spoke to her, and because I asked her that
- 7:01Speaker 6: question in front of the room full of she was
- 7:03Speaker 6: a panelist along with La Rams coach Sean McVay and so.
- 7:08Speaker 6: But the thing that comes across to me when I
- 7:10Speaker 6: look at the word undappreciated and underrated is that Candice
- 7:14Speaker 6: Parker is absolutely beautiful, And I'm wondering has that been
- 7:20Speaker 6: something that's been used against her?
- 7:21Speaker 4: Because she's so attractive?
- 7:23Speaker 6: If she wasn't to me, if she wasn't an athlete,
- 7:26Speaker 6: she could probably be a model. Could that have you know,
- 7:29Speaker 6: she's a cute girl. She doesn't work hard, things get
- 7:33Speaker 6: her way, you know, could that have hurt her in
- 7:36Speaker 6: her athletic world, that she's just attractive woman that really
- 7:40Speaker 6: doesn't put in the work and probably just gets handed things.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Your thoughts.
- 7:45Speaker 7: I think that there has been animosity towards her by
- 7:49Speaker 7: her peers because of the way she looks, because of
- 7:53Speaker 7: her appearance. Thoughts that she was getting endorsements or she's
- 7:57Speaker 7: getting marketing pushes because of her looks versus other athletes.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You know, she.
- 8:04Speaker 7: Also is a person who is very much committed to
- 8:09Speaker 7: her work and her family. So she's not out there
- 8:13Speaker 7: in the streets hanging with her teammates all the time,
- 8:16Speaker 7: like she's not that person. So she's a very private
- 8:21Speaker 7: person who spends a lot of time with her family
- 8:24Speaker 7: or doing or on the court and training and getting
- 8:27Speaker 7: her body and being ready for the game and now
- 8:29Speaker 7: broadcasting and the other things that she's doing.
- 8:33Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean she's about her business.
- 8:35Speaker 7: So I definitely think that between her appearance and the
- 8:40Speaker 7: perceptions that come with that, coupled with the fact that
- 8:44Speaker 7: she's really a focused competitor, probably made her peers have
- 8:50Speaker 7: a lot.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Of animosity towards her.
- 8:51Speaker 7: And we saw that in the twenty nineteen pool that
- 8:54Speaker 7: came out, which we talk about in the film, where
- 8:56Speaker 7: they said she was the most underrated.
- 8:59Speaker 6: You overrated word overrated came in, you know, like I said,
- 9:03Speaker 6: you know, we say unapologetic, but this could have been overrated.
- 9:07Speaker 4: It could have been underappreciated. It could have been underrated.
- 9:10Speaker 6: Because a lot of titles could have been tied to
- 9:13Speaker 6: her name. But you know the one that comes up.
- 9:15Speaker 6: I've appreciated her talent. I've appreciated what she's brought to
- 9:19Speaker 6: the table. I appreciate the skill set that I see
- 9:22Speaker 6: with her on T and T during the March Madness.
- 9:25Speaker 6: I mean, she's you know, these are just things I
- 9:27Speaker 6: see as a person who goes She's brilliant, she has
- 9:31Speaker 6: a sense of humor, and I can tell she does
- 9:33Speaker 6: her hard work hard the hard work that needs to
- 9:35Speaker 6: be put in place. Because she's a female person reporting
- 9:38Speaker 6: on male sports, that's when you got to have your
- 9:41Speaker 6: act together. But the commentary that she provides is I
- 9:45Speaker 6: always tell people like I represent Steven A. Smith, and
- 9:48Speaker 6: I always tell him when people I'm a sports junkie,
- 9:50Speaker 6: I said, when somebody tells me something that I go wow,
- 9:53Speaker 6: I never would have thought of that. That means that
- 9:55Speaker 6: a person has a special gift of talent, and she's
- 9:57Speaker 6: one of those people. Now along the way, you know,
- 10:01Speaker 6: you know, her brother got drafted in the NBA as
- 10:04Speaker 6: the first round pick, and so so athleticism drove that family.
- 10:08Speaker 6: And she was the youngest in the family, so she
- 10:11Speaker 6: basically was treated like one of the boys, which drove
- 10:14Speaker 6: her competitively. But if you look back when I first
- 10:20Speaker 6: see her, and there wasn't mentioned in this docuseries, I
- 10:23Speaker 6: just think of Cheryl Miller, you know who I you know,
- 10:26Speaker 6: she's tall like her, she's kin complexion like her, she's
- 10:29Speaker 6: attractive like her. And I didn't hear Cheryl Miller name
- 10:32Speaker 6: mentioned in the documentary. Was that intentional or that would
- 10:35Speaker 6: have strayed in a different direction for the documentary, if
- 10:38Speaker 6: we'd have brought Cheryl Miller toned into this documentary.
- 10:42Speaker 5: You know, I don't.
- 10:45Speaker 7: I feel like we were really trying to get there
- 10:48Speaker 7: were so only so many minutes, and I definitely know
- 10:50Speaker 7: that Cheryl Miller is somebody that Candice looks up to,
- 10:55Speaker 7: but there is I think really just keeping it to
- 10:58Speaker 7: time made things like that have to.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Go at times.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Like I remember, we had you know, more about Lisa
- 11:05Speaker 7: and her relationship.
- 11:07Speaker 5: You know, they were very close and she looked up to.
- 11:09Speaker 7: Her very much and you know as a mother in
- 11:13Speaker 7: the NBA as well WNBA. So there were just unfortunately,
- 11:17Speaker 7: you know, some of those other stories. I wish we
- 11:19Speaker 7: could go further and more in depth on some of
- 11:22Speaker 7: the pioneers that she looks up to and that that
- 11:27Speaker 7: she really respects the game of because she's a she's
- 11:30Speaker 7: someone who studies and she she came up in you know,
- 11:34Speaker 7: nineteen ninety six, she's ten years old or something, and
- 11:38Speaker 7: you know that's when the WNBA was created, So that
- 11:41Speaker 7: was like she finally saw that basketball could become a career.
- 11:45Speaker 7: Like that's that moment for her. So she definitely, you know,
- 11:50Speaker 7: was a fan of Cheryl Miller. I also think, you
- 11:53Speaker 7: know when you say, you know, this is a masterclass
- 11:56Speaker 7: and you mentioned her parents, right, that was part of
- 12:00Speaker 7: probably for me, one of the best things about the
- 12:02Speaker 7: interviews and making this film was talking to her parents
- 12:06Speaker 7: and learning from her parents because these are these are
- 12:10Speaker 7: these are these are amazing parents who who got two
- 12:14Speaker 7: of their kids into professional sports. Another kid is a
- 12:18Speaker 7: doctor and went to the best university he went to,
- 12:21Speaker 7: you know, went to the top university in the country
- 12:23Speaker 7: for medical school.
- 12:25Speaker 5: These are really exceptional kids. How do you how do
- 12:28Speaker 5: your kids turn out like this?
- 12:29Speaker 7: You know, I wanted to know as a mom also
- 12:32Speaker 7: like what are the things that you do to drive
- 12:35Speaker 7: your child? And so it was also a master lesson
- 12:39Speaker 7: in learning from both Larry and Sarah Parker about how
- 12:44Speaker 7: you know, it's it's not about coddling your kids. It's
- 12:48Speaker 7: not about you know, treating them like they're like just
- 12:54Speaker 7: because they had a dunk that they're that they're you know,
- 12:56Speaker 7: so important. No, it's really about lifeline lessons and showing
- 13:01Speaker 7: them how things are hard and to keep working at
- 13:04Speaker 7: it until you become the best.
- 13:05Speaker 5: So that's that's where all that comes from.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Well, you know, it's really important that I asked these
- 13:09Speaker 6: questions because of the fact that first I'm curious and
- 13:13Speaker 6: I'm a basketball junkie and I'm a w NBA fan
- 13:15Speaker 6: or a fan of women's basketball, and then she had
- 13:18Speaker 6: her The father of their child, well, I think he
- 13:21Speaker 6: was the number fourth pick in the NBA draft, Williams.
- 13:24Speaker 6: He went to college great basketball players. She was a
- 13:27Speaker 6: great black so number one pick in the w NBA draft.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Their daughter does she ever? Does she ever considered sports?
- 13:35Speaker 6: What was the whole approach to her? What does she
- 13:38Speaker 6: what is her love?
- 13:54Speaker 8: You are now tuned into the money making conversations Minute
- 13:57Speaker 8: of Inspiration with Rashawn McDonald.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Nephew Tommy aka Thomas Miles. Career includes morning radio, television,
- 14:04Speaker 6: film prankphone Call, Soul Dot, comedy tours, and hosting owns
- 14:08Speaker 6: popular relationship show Ready to Love. But he tells me
- 14:11Speaker 6: about how not becoming a track star did not disappoint
- 14:14Speaker 6: his dad.
- 14:15Speaker 9: I did track all through high school, and I also
- 14:17Speaker 9: did drama all through high school, and I chose the
- 14:20Speaker 9: drama scholarship, and I actually thought that I disappointed him.
- 14:23Speaker 9: And I'm getting ready to go off to college and
- 14:25Speaker 9: that's when he's standing there saying you know, you got
- 14:27Speaker 9: my dream. I was like, what are you talking about?
- 14:29Speaker 9: He said, you got my dream. I said, no, I'm not.
- 14:32Speaker 9: I'm not running track, Pops. I'm gonna pursue the steer
- 14:34Speaker 9: the thing. He said, yeah, you got my dream. And
- 14:37Speaker 9: that's when he tells me that he was a theater
- 14:38Speaker 9: major at Texas Southern University and he had to drop
- 14:42Speaker 9: out of school because, yeah, to help his mother and
- 14:44Speaker 9: his father help raise his siblings, because my dad was
- 14:46Speaker 9: the oldest.

- 15:47Speaker 5: She's an athlete. Leyla's very tall.
- 15:50Speaker 7: She's about six foot now at this point and thirteen
- 15:54Speaker 7: years old. And yeah, I mean she plays so she
- 15:58Speaker 7: plays volleyball competitive fleet and she played soccer.
- 16:02Speaker 5: And she.
- 16:04Speaker 7: Has recent you know, she started to really come into basketball.
- 16:08Speaker 7: I think she was avoiding it at first because her
- 16:10Speaker 7: father is also from the NBA, Sheldon Williams, So you know,
- 16:14Speaker 7: it was there's a lot of pressure there.
- 16:16Speaker 5: But she actually really loves the sports.
- 16:18Speaker 7: So you do get to see Layla and Candace and
- 16:24Speaker 7: even an your Candace's wife on the court.
- 16:28Speaker 6: Now you know Joey. Now you know Joey. They wasn't
- 16:31Speaker 6: the same skill set. I saw the doc. Now you
- 16:33Speaker 6: know she she I'm glad you said she's thirteen because
- 16:37Speaker 6: she's tall. She looked like she's about sixteen seventeen, So
- 16:40Speaker 6: she has a number of years to develop those skills.
- 16:44Speaker 4: You know.
- 16:44Speaker 6: That's why I asked, you know, from the standpoint, did
- 16:47Speaker 6: she wanted to pursue but volleyball?
- 16:49Speaker 4: I could see her doing that easily.
- 16:51Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, but her father being an incredible athlete
- 16:54Speaker 6: and performed at a high level in a college.
- 16:56Speaker 4: That would be pressure because at number.
- 16:58Speaker 6: Four picked in the draft, you know what I'm saying,
- 17:00Speaker 6: and then her mom being the number one pick in
- 17:01Speaker 6: the draft, because it just becomes a docuseries about family,
- 17:05Speaker 6: and that's what I thought that stood out the most.
- 17:07Speaker 6: Her family, her finding out how who she really was,
- 17:11Speaker 6: her destiny as being a person who wanted to come
- 17:14Speaker 6: out and say I'm gay. I wanted to pursue this lifestyle.
- 17:18Speaker 6: The facts being put out there. One in five women
- 17:21Speaker 6: in the WNBA are gay, and she felt that that
- 17:24Speaker 6: was important.
- 17:25Speaker 4: And she also mentioned the fact that.
- 17:27Speaker 6: Oftentimes in social media she's under attack whether and that's
- 17:30Speaker 6: that's not fair, but she still has to deal with that.
- 17:33Speaker 6: She has the courage to live with that. Explain to
- 17:35Speaker 6: us her role and plan that out. She mentions about it,
- 17:40Speaker 6: talks or talks about it in the film, but talk
- 17:42Speaker 6: about your perspective and building those moments to make sure
- 17:46Speaker 6: we got the message correctly.
- 17:48Speaker 5: About her coming out specifically.
- 17:50Speaker 7: Yes, ma'am, yeah, I mean I think that for Candace,
- 17:56Speaker 7: you know, you use those words at the beginning, all
- 17:58Speaker 7: these expectations, you know, all these things, and there was
- 18:01Speaker 7: an expectation for this beautiful woman who was married to
- 18:05Speaker 7: man to be a straight woman. And I think that
- 18:09Speaker 7: weighed on her, that that expectation, and you know, I
- 18:15Speaker 7: think that's why it took her so long to to
- 18:19Speaker 7: to publicly say that her and Anya were together. So really,
- 18:25Speaker 7: for her, it wasn't about, you know, this big to
- 18:30Speaker 7: do coming out thing. She didn't want that. She really
- 18:34Speaker 7: just wanted to be honest about who she you know,
- 18:39Speaker 7: about who she is, So she didn't she really didn't
- 18:42Speaker 7: make a huge deal of it. She put out an
- 18:44Speaker 7: Instagram post. I happened to be there that day picking
- 18:48Speaker 7: her up from the airport. It was her anniversary, and
- 18:51Speaker 7: it was her anniversary, and she was like, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 7: I'm tired of this. My wife is pregnant, and she's
- 18:56Speaker 7: she's it's it's becoming obvious that she's and you know,
- 19:02Speaker 7: people who know Candice and who are close to her,
- 19:06Speaker 7: you know, we're at the wedding and and would see
- 19:10Speaker 7: you know, their family together. And but it was really
- 19:13Speaker 7: about this public moment because she as she's bringing a
- 19:18Speaker 7: life into the world, she's having a son with her wife, rightfully,
- 19:24Speaker 7: so she felt she wanted to celebrate it. I think
- 19:26Speaker 7: really that's what was behind her finally, you know, doing
- 19:30Speaker 7: that Instagram post was just that she wanted to be
- 19:33Speaker 7: able to celebrate this momentous, beautiful moment.
- 19:38Speaker 4: I'm grateful to.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Have been there.
- 19:40Speaker 6: Well, you know, like when you do projects like this,
- 19:43Speaker 6: you know, fortunate to work on docuseries and when people
- 19:46Speaker 6: allow you to tell their personal story. That's this is
- 19:50Speaker 6: a very intimate story that you are breaking down to us.
- 19:54Speaker 6: You know, from the beginning, middle of the end, when
- 19:57Speaker 6: we look at all the injuries this she has ended,
- 20:02Speaker 6: is she afraid when she gets in the fifties and
- 20:04Speaker 6: sixties of how she.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Would be able to deal with those injuries? Joey, yes.
- 20:09Speaker 7: I mean, you know you've spoken to how many you've
- 20:12Speaker 7: talked to retired athletes. You know she has too, and
- 20:17Speaker 7: that is one of her greatest fears is that she's
- 20:19Speaker 7: not going to be able to be on the court
- 20:20Speaker 7: with her son. You know, she wants to be able
- 20:23Speaker 7: to play some play and pick up with him, like
- 20:26Speaker 7: she wants to be able to walk, and that we
- 20:29Speaker 7: know is a difficult difficulty for a lot of retired players,
- 20:33Speaker 7: and that's for the men's side.
- 20:34Speaker 5: You see she talks to a lot of the men.
- 20:36Speaker 7: But think about what women are going through when they've
- 20:39Speaker 7: been working. They played a lot more than the men.
- 20:41Speaker 7: They played all through college, they played basically year.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Round for ten years of their career.
- 20:49Speaker 7: She's just started to It was just in the last
- 20:52Speaker 7: four years when she started doing Turner and doing broadcasting
- 20:56Speaker 7: that she's been able to step away from play saying
- 21:00Speaker 7: year year round. So she's very worried about that. But
- 21:04Speaker 7: the thing about Candace is she does a lot of
- 21:07Speaker 7: you know, a lot of work to.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Deal with that.
- 21:10Speaker 7: And so we see her with her trainers, We see
- 21:14Speaker 7: her in the cold baths, you know, we see her
- 21:17Speaker 7: doing the acupuncture.
- 21:20Speaker 5: She takes all of the precautions.
- 21:22Speaker 7: She's an amazing athlete that treats her body incredibly and
- 21:27Speaker 7: knows how to deal with her body, and she takes
- 21:31Speaker 7: care of herself. So that's how she's able to do this.
- 21:33Speaker 7: And so she's trying her best to do this in
- 21:36Speaker 7: a smart way. She's not going to push it to
- 21:38Speaker 7: the end. She's not gonna push it to the wheels
- 21:41Speaker 7: fall off. And she also won't play if her body
- 21:45Speaker 7: is not one hundred percent because she won't cheat the sport.
- 21:49Speaker 7: She cares too much about the sport of basketball to
- 21:52Speaker 7: ever play without being at her best.
- 21:55Speaker 5: I'm sorry, I'm having a sound issue here. I'm gonna just.
- 22:00Speaker 8: Is that you, Joey?
- 22:01Speaker 4: Is that you? I'm sorry?
- 22:03Speaker 5: Could you just give me one second?
- 22:06Speaker 4: Absolutely? Absolutely one second?
- 22:10Speaker 8: Did you know that?
- 22:11Speaker 4: Please?
- 22:20Speaker 3: Right now?
- 22:23Speaker 5: Sorry? My housekeeper was working, she.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Was doing her job job. You know that.
- 22:31Speaker 6: That allows me to transition to dramatic moments in the
- 22:38Speaker 6: Candice Parker Apologetic film. You know, the knee injury in
- 22:43Speaker 6: high school. That was a dramatic moment. The uh passing
- 22:47Speaker 6: of Pat Summit was played out in the documentary.
- 22:51Speaker 4: That was a dramatic moment.
- 22:52Speaker 6: Another dramatic moment that angered me what I felt and
- 22:57Speaker 6: I knew what was happening because I was in l
- 22:59Speaker 6: at the time.
- 23:00Speaker 4: The treatment of her by Derek Fisher.
- 23:06Speaker 6: Her takeaway from that, I think she's still mad at
- 23:09Speaker 6: him because it was uncalled for and it made her
- 23:12Speaker 6: look bad. Because that's the things, like I said, she's
- 23:15Speaker 6: been fighting for her whole life. Give us some insight.
- 23:18Speaker 6: A lot of it's played out into the film. Is
- 23:21Speaker 6: fantastic moment of being able to cover emotions and back
- 23:24Speaker 6: it up with facts, tell us about how you was,
- 23:27Speaker 6: how you pulled that together.
- 23:29Speaker 5: Yeah, you know there.
- 23:31Speaker 7: Was there definitely still you know, a lot of motion
- 23:35Speaker 7: tied to that. Those years, those later years at the
- 23:39Speaker 7: at the Sparks were hard for her, really hard for her.
- 23:42Speaker 7: And and and then you know, when I interviewed some
- 23:46Speaker 7: of the journalists that were covering that period, like Jamel
- 23:50Speaker 7: Hill and also Ramota Sharborne, they also could have attested
- 23:58Speaker 7: to that and then and to the treatment sort of
- 24:01Speaker 7: that they were seeing from within the organization to someone
- 24:06Speaker 7: who was their star. And it was really a double
- 24:10Speaker 7: standard if you think about it, because would you ever
- 24:13Speaker 7: imagine them treating Lebron like that or you know, like
- 24:18Speaker 7: the person who is the star of your team that
- 24:20Speaker 7: you know, you're headliner and you you're devaluing them.
- 24:25Speaker 5: I mean there were other things too.
- 24:27Speaker 6: I mean there was time well look look James Harden,
- 24:29Speaker 6: he can get up and say I want to get traded.
- 24:31Speaker 6: He got he said, I want out of Houston, didn't
- 24:33Speaker 6: show up. I went out at Brooklyn, didn't show up.
- 24:36Speaker 6: I want out of Philly, didn't show up. Now you're
- 24:38Speaker 6: over there.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Messing up the Clippers tape. So you're absolutely right, there's
- 24:41Speaker 4: a double standard.
- 24:42Speaker 6: This man has proven he's done no championships because every
- 24:47Speaker 6: time he's mad or don't like.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Something, he's out.
- 24:50Speaker 6: Here's the person who's won three championship And at the
- 24:53Speaker 6: time I had won one championship and delivered.
- 24:55Speaker 5: To the multiple time.
- 24:58Speaker 6: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, And I was like, you know,
- 25:02Speaker 6: it was really interesting because of the fact that when
- 25:04Speaker 6: you are see people because you're helpless, because you at
- 25:07Speaker 6: the mercy of individuals, you have to nursey of perception.
- 25:10Speaker 6: You had the mercy steal. She still is attracted person
- 25:13Speaker 6: and people being stereo landing stereotypes on her about what
- 25:17Speaker 6: they think she are she is and she heard again
- 25:20Speaker 6: and all these things that she has to deal with
- 25:23Speaker 6: as a star talent she's been dealing with all her life.
- 25:25Speaker 6: But when I look at the documentary, the year that
- 25:27Speaker 6: stood out as probably her year that she just will
- 25:31Speaker 6: remember for the rest of her life is twenty sixteen.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Oh yeah, twenty sixteen was not a very good year
- 25:37Speaker 4: for Kansas. Parker talk to us about that.
- 25:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, it was a lot, it was, you know,
- 25:44Speaker 7: I think the biggest it started off really really bad
- 25:48Speaker 7: with the Olympics.
- 25:50Speaker 4: Right, she is a.
- 25:52Speaker 7: Two time gold medalist, and you know, she's asked to
- 25:57Speaker 7: go to a camp, asked to go away from her family,
- 26:00Speaker 7: work in this camp, prove herself.
- 26:03Speaker 5: She's being told that she's doing amazing.
- 26:05Speaker 7: She's killing it out there as one of the best
- 26:08Speaker 7: players in a field of great players. I mean, America
- 26:11Speaker 7: has the greatest women basketball players in the world.
- 26:14Speaker 5: That's it.
- 26:15Speaker 4: We do and.
- 26:18Speaker 7: They and but and Candases is one of the best,
- 26:22Speaker 7: right And so what you see there is this coach
- 26:26Speaker 7: who happens to be from the rival school college school
- 26:32Speaker 7: that she went. You know, went to Genoriyama from Connecticut
- 26:36Speaker 7: as the coach of the US Olympic team, but he
- 26:39Speaker 7: was also the coach of the of the Connecticut team
- 26:43Speaker 7: where Diana went, where Sue went. A lot of great athletes.
- 26:47Speaker 6: Three other and three other people who made their liberty.
- 26:50Speaker 6: It was five of them, totally correct. And Gina also
- 26:53Speaker 6: quote unquote was not a fan of Pat Summit. Let's
- 26:56Speaker 6: go and be real that Pat Summitt was his ribe
- 27:00Speaker 6: at the University of Tennessee.
- 27:02Speaker 4: So that moment right there, you know, the.
- 27:06Speaker 6: Other down moment was of course Pat Summit, Yeah, lost
- 27:10Speaker 6: her life in twenty sixteen.
- 27:13Speaker 4: You know, but she did.
- 27:15Speaker 6: The positive moment was she did win her second I
- 27:19Speaker 6: mean when she did win a WNBA championship in twenty sixteen.
- 27:22Speaker 7: And I think that was fueled by the fire, you
- 27:24Speaker 7: know that she had in her after losing Pat you know,
- 27:28Speaker 7: coming Like the thing about Candace is whenever there's you know,
- 27:33Speaker 7: things that are bad or think she's down, that actually
- 27:37Speaker 7: she uses it.
- 27:38Speaker 5: And I find this with a lot of great athletes.
- 27:40Speaker 7: She uses it and you know, very successful people in general,
- 27:44Speaker 7: is that she uses it to motivate herself and she
- 27:49Speaker 7: she channels that energy and that sadness, the grief. Her
- 27:54Speaker 7: marriage was also, you know, breaking up at that time.
- 27:57Speaker 5: She was separating in twenty six.
- 28:00Speaker 4: With Sheldon Williams.
- 28:01Speaker 7: Yeah, with Sheldon, and so I mean it was a
- 28:03Speaker 7: lot for her that year and she had something to
- 28:06Speaker 7: prove and she you know, she brought home the championship
- 28:11Speaker 7: finally to the Lakers, I mean to the Sparks, the
- 28:16Speaker 7: La Sparks.
- 28:16Speaker 5: And yeah, it was it was a very dramatic year.
- 28:20Speaker 7: So I hope I really wanted to make sure that
- 28:22Speaker 7: that felt impactful for the audience.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Very impactful.
- 28:26Speaker 6: Joey a tremendous job, you know, I'm just I'm just
- 28:30Speaker 6: enjoying the moment. I watched the film on the day
- 28:33Speaker 6: of the day of the interview, so this is all
- 28:35Speaker 6: fresh in my mind. But like I said, in twenty sixteen,
- 28:38Speaker 6: she won for the la' Sparks and she got traded
- 28:40Speaker 6: to her hometown Chicago, where she won her second championship,
- 28:44Speaker 6: and this past year in twenty twenty three, unfortunately she
- 28:47Speaker 6: was hurt at the time, but she did win her
- 28:49Speaker 6: third championship with the Aces of Las Vegas, which is
- 28:53Speaker 6: one of my favorite teams.
- 28:54Speaker 4: By the way, leave me I'm a waa paint.
- 28:56Speaker 5: Yes, I love it.
- 28:57Speaker 6: Miss Wilson is a star and Miss Plum, I just
- 29:00Speaker 6: love them all. And Ms Gray, who was a teammate
- 29:03Speaker 6: with her. You with the Sparks again, you kind of
- 29:06Speaker 6: like it. It was a memory lane. I don't know
- 29:08Speaker 6: who's gonna interview you from these moment on interviews have
- 29:12Speaker 6: I like to believe they can never be as detailed
- 29:14Speaker 6: as much fun as I am. Joey, thank you for
- 29:17Speaker 6: coming on my show, Money Making Conversation Masterclass.
