- 1:10Speaker 1: on the line, Old Friend. I'm gonna call him old
- 1:12Speaker 1: Friend because we have done some motivation together with some
- 1:15Speaker 1: young people and he's been at the forefront a mot
- 1:18Speaker 1: motivating young people. And I think that's really key because
- 1:21Speaker 1: catching a seed early, you know, you see a plank row,
- 1:24Speaker 1: that's when you really nurtured. You get the right amount
- 1:26Speaker 1: of water, you get right around by the sunshine. That's
- 1:28Speaker 1: what he does. My next guest is one of the
- 1:30Speaker 1: top educators. He is a top motivational speaker and now
- 1:34Speaker 1: a daytime TV host. New show call Breakthrough with Dr Perry,
- 1:39Speaker 1: a new daytime syndication talk show from CBS Television Distribution,
- 1:42Speaker 1: starring my man, Dr Steve Perry, respected educator and advocate
- 1:46Speaker 1: best known for creating educational opportunities for children. Please welcome
- 1:50Speaker 1: to Money Making Conversations, Dr Steve Perry. My main man,
- 1:56Speaker 1: How man? How you MANI to talk to you? Win
- 2:00Speaker 1: both sweat and burning up like living comfortably? Oh man.
- 2:06Speaker 1: First of all, I saw the promo. I didn't even
- 2:09Speaker 1: know about the show. Okay, and so I'm watching I'm
- 2:11Speaker 1: watching television. I just see it's doctor, said, I just
- 2:16Speaker 1: wish Steve I didn't do the Doctor. You know, when
- 2:20Speaker 1: and when you see people and you buy yourself and
- 2:22Speaker 1: your house, you want to go. I'm by myself. Who
- 2:25Speaker 1: am going to confirm this with? Right? Right? Congratulations man,
- 2:29Speaker 1: because I know how long we've talked about people are different.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Networks have have have sat down what you said, you
- 2:37Speaker 1: had the talent, said you have the ability, said they
- 2:39Speaker 1: want to put you in the position to do what
- 2:41Speaker 1: you're doing. Now, tell us about their journey, and then
- 2:43Speaker 1: we're gonna go back to our history together to let
- 2:46Speaker 1: everybody know this is not an individual who just got
- 2:49Speaker 1: a shot. You've nurtured this through your your craft, through
- 2:52Speaker 1: your education, through your hard work. But tell us how
- 2:54Speaker 1: did this show, T talk show come about? Well, it's
- 2:58Speaker 1: CBS reached out. UM asked me if if I want
- 3:02Speaker 1: to do a TV show? And I didn't. I thought
- 3:06Speaker 1: they said c v S. I thought it was the
- 3:09Speaker 1: drug Store. I said no, I said no CB. Oh wow,
- 3:14Speaker 1: yeah that sounds cool. So and it began as a
- 3:18Speaker 1: really as a as an idea of a trio of
- 3:22Speaker 1: a of a show in which there was a bunch
- 3:26Speaker 1: of people on the show doing a format similar to
- 3:29Speaker 1: what you've seen, but there were men and women, Me
- 3:30Speaker 1: and two other means two women and UH went out
- 3:34Speaker 1: there and they decided that they just want to do
- 3:37Speaker 1: the show just me, and so Fox said they want
- 3:40Speaker 1: to give it a shot. Fox to put us up
- 3:42Speaker 1: there for ten days, and now we're in the waiting
- 3:44Speaker 1: phays of the game to find out if Fox wants
- 3:46Speaker 1: to move forward or if they want to keep doing
- 3:48Speaker 1: what they've been doing. Talk about gossip all day, right,
- 3:52Speaker 1: So I didn't sit down with the EP. Did you
- 3:55Speaker 1: have that? Were you involved in the selection process of EP?
- 3:58Speaker 1: The storyline? So I wasn't involved with the selection of
- 4:06Speaker 1: the stories, but I was involved with the framing of
- 4:10Speaker 1: the narrative. They gave me quite a bit of latitude
- 4:14Speaker 1: in terms of discussing what I wanted to discuss and
- 4:17Speaker 1: approaching that the problems from the perspectives that I have.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So they were very very open to that, which was cool. Um,
- 4:26Speaker 1: And what was funny was after the first day of shooting, Um,
- 4:31Speaker 1: midway through it, I should say, they just cut the
- 4:34Speaker 1: telepromped off. They said, he ain't reading anyway, we just
- 4:38Speaker 1: wasted our man is not reading anything that we've written
- 4:41Speaker 1: up in So with the person who's doing teleproming, go home. Now, Yeah,
- 4:47Speaker 1: it was cool. It was cool. Well, because that's great
- 4:49Speaker 1: because you're doing it from your point of view. And
- 4:52Speaker 1: so I always tell people that a lot of people
- 4:55Speaker 1: in television who are really got a lot of great resumes.
- 4:58Speaker 1: To produce talent, you have to let the talent win.
- 5:02Speaker 1: That's how you used to get long term success. If
- 5:04Speaker 1: you're not, I'm proud you did that because of the
- 5:06Speaker 1: fact that you have to rely on your natural instincts
- 5:09Speaker 1: that way, Steve, you lose, you know why you you
- 5:11Speaker 1: You did it your way. You did it from your poem,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and that's and that's what it is. You know, when
- 5:15Speaker 1: lose a draw, it's like you know, you you you
- 5:19Speaker 1: meet a girl and she decides she wants to go
- 5:22Speaker 1: in a different direction, and you see it with this
- 5:24Speaker 1: dude and he's a clown, and you think, yep, even
- 5:28Speaker 1: if she didn't choose me, what she chose is so
- 5:31Speaker 1: vastly different than me that I don't even aspire to
- 5:33Speaker 1: be that. I'm comfortable with her going with him and
- 5:37Speaker 1: not me. The same thing is true with this TV stuff.
- 5:40Speaker 1: If they go with us, dope, if they don't dope.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I have a job. It's a good job. I get
- 5:46Speaker 1: to work with children every single day. I'm in our
- 5:49Speaker 1: in our school in Harlem right now, and you know,
- 5:52Speaker 1: discussing things that matter like where what building we're gonna
- 5:56Speaker 1: be in over our school and the broth and taking
- 6:00Speaker 1: a look at UH. Before I came in the office,
- 6:03Speaker 1: I was next door because we have a sub in there.
- 6:07Speaker 1: And apparently substill means the same thing it always means,
- 6:11Speaker 1: which is lose your damn mind when you're in class,
- 6:14Speaker 1: tighten up some folks next door. So if I have
- 6:17Speaker 1: to pause the conversations because I really do have a
- 6:20Speaker 1: job where I really do still work with kids, as
- 6:22Speaker 1: you know, absolutely well absolutely just a little short history
- 6:25Speaker 1: on that. Dr Steven Perry and I, um, you know
- 6:28Speaker 1: it goes back to Steve Harvey in our relationship when
- 6:31Speaker 1: I was manager Steve and running the UH, all the
- 6:34Speaker 1: charitable arms of the Steve as well as the Morning Show.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Whenever we had an education issue that I'm more I'm
- 6:40Speaker 1: one person I put on the phone was Dr Steve Perry.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You know now, I always appreciate that, brother, and it's
- 6:45Speaker 1: and it's you know, you've always been cool to me,
- 6:51Speaker 1: and you've always been the same to me, and I
- 6:55Speaker 1: think what is most important in life. Recently had something
- 6:59Speaker 1: very close to me and uncle mine passed away. What um,
- 7:03Speaker 1: what I've learned, what his passing is confirmed, is that
- 7:09Speaker 1: what we're really doing, Rashan, is we are populating our funeral,
- 7:16Speaker 1: meaning the way you live is the way you're gonna
- 7:19Speaker 1: go out and people will remember you as you were.
- 7:23Speaker 1: You can't. You can only right so much of the
- 7:26Speaker 1: narrative until at one point the truth makes this way out.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And as far as you and I go, you've been
- 7:32Speaker 1: cool with me and have always talked about you in
- 7:37Speaker 1: particular specifically talked about me needing to be your daytime TV.
- 7:41Speaker 1: The conversation you and I've had at least three times.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Absolutely we're gonna continue. Are We're going to a break here.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I'm talking to Dr Steve Perry. I call HI number
- 7:48Speaker 1: one to educate. I don't care if I have problems
- 7:50Speaker 1: in Chicago. I don't care if I have problems in
- 7:51Speaker 1: New York and Los Angeles. I called him because guess
- 7:53Speaker 1: what to me. He was the truth. We will be
- 7:56Speaker 1: back with more money making conversation with Dr Steve Perry. Hi,
- 8:01Speaker 1: this ra Sean McDonald. You're listening to money making conversations. Uh,
- 8:06Speaker 1: very popular money making conversation. It always amazes me that An,
- 8:10Speaker 1: the idea that I started just to promote myself a
- 8:13Speaker 1: six week has evolved in almost a two year platform
- 8:17Speaker 1: of motivation and uh information to everyday people on the phone.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Is Uh. One of my my dear friends, my dear
- 8:24Speaker 1: friends in the business of education is Dr Steve Perry.
- 8:27Speaker 1: He's one of the most sought after educators in America,
- 8:29Speaker 1: widely respected by grassroot community members and internationally renowned leaders.
- 8:34Speaker 1: He's He's chrismatic and compelling force. Is truly, truly and inspiration.
- 8:39Speaker 1: The reason I say that is that every year when
- 8:41Speaker 1: he would speaking at the Disney Dreamers Academy is always
- 8:44Speaker 1: in late February early March, hosted by Steve Harvey Essence Magazine. Uh.
- 8:49Speaker 1: He would go on stage and it's almost like when
- 8:52Speaker 1: you see suit people doing something that you can't do,
- 8:55Speaker 1: or you can do it, but not as well as
- 8:57Speaker 1: he does it. It's like watching lebro you know, it's
- 8:59Speaker 1: it's basketball players on the court with Lebron. No, they
- 9:02Speaker 1: can't do with Lebron does. And when I would see
- 9:04Speaker 1: him articulate in any speech, any format, in a public form,
- 9:08Speaker 1: he always always went as a bad man right there.
- 9:11Speaker 1: So Dr Perry, I gotta give you your juice. I
- 9:14Speaker 1: appreciate that. But I appreciate that. But you know, I
- 9:18Speaker 1: I was listening to I remember being oh man, I
- 9:22Speaker 1: remember being in my mid twenties and I heard Atlantis
- 9:27Speaker 1: Morris set uh in with that album that she had
- 9:31Speaker 1: or CD that she had called Jagged Little Pill. I
- 9:35Speaker 1: remember thinking, as she saying, this woman is doing exactly
- 9:39Speaker 1: what she was put on this earth to do. And
- 9:42Speaker 1: my objective is to do exactly what I've been put
- 9:44Speaker 1: on this earth to do. I feel very, very fortunate.
- 9:47Speaker 1: I am so humbled by the opportunity to work with
- 9:51Speaker 1: us like you and people in the community who are
- 9:56Speaker 1: doing what's necessary to move our community forward. To be
- 10:00Speaker 1: able to wake up in my dream is a dream,
- 10:03Speaker 1: and I encourage your listeners. Don't be afraid of waking
- 10:09Speaker 1: up in the nightmare of somebody else's dream. Be completely
- 10:15Speaker 1: afraid of waking up doing something that somebody else should
- 10:19Speaker 1: be doing not you, because that fear will drive you
- 10:26Speaker 1: into your own dream, and in your dream things make sense. Um.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I've learned that people who are unhappy in their job
- 10:40Speaker 1: see it as a job. Those are happy in their
- 10:44Speaker 1: career can't wait to wake up to be part of it.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Just can't wait. Understand that you know, as you well know,
- 10:51Speaker 1: you don't get from small clubs to arenas by invitation.
- 10:58Speaker 1: You have to make a hal you have to blaze
- 11:02Speaker 1: a trail. And there are a lot of people tell jokes.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I mean a lot of people, a lot of people,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and a lot of funny people. I got schools full
- 11:10Speaker 1: of funny kids to damn funny. Sometimes they need to
- 11:13Speaker 1: chill with the funny. Ain't nobody paying their little behind
- 11:15Speaker 1: to be funny. They just need to be a little
- 11:17Speaker 1: more serious. But that's how they built. But few people
- 11:21Speaker 1: will be able to turn that into a career, and
- 11:23Speaker 1: even fuel will be able to be successful at it.
- 11:26Speaker 1: But the same is true for every career. Just because
- 11:28Speaker 1: you have a job to be on top. To be
- 11:31Speaker 1: on top, you gotta be prepared to do things that
- 11:34Speaker 1: nobody else is prepared to do, eat things that nobody's
- 11:39Speaker 1: prepared to eat. And I literally mean that, both figuratively
- 11:42Speaker 1: and literally, meaning that there are things that you have
- 11:46Speaker 1: to put up with on the road to the top
- 11:50Speaker 1: that most folks say, Na, na, no, No, I ain't
- 11:52Speaker 1: sleeping on the park bench. I'm not doing that. I
- 11:54Speaker 1: don't care what you say. I'm not doing that. I'm
- 11:56Speaker 1: not I'm not gonna sleep in the car. I'm not
- 11:59Speaker 1: gonna do that. I don't care what you say. I'm
- 12:02Speaker 1: not doing that. That's crazy, okay, because the person who
- 12:05Speaker 1: sleeping on the park bench on the way to the
- 12:07Speaker 1: gig is the one who's gonna get to get the gig.
- 12:11Speaker 1: The one who needs to be in the bed, who
- 12:13Speaker 1: needs to have heat on at night, ain't gonna get
- 12:15Speaker 1: it when you're grinding. When you're grinding, the same it
- 12:18Speaker 1: is true with schools. When we when I started the
- 12:22Speaker 1: first one, we started the first one, I looked at
- 12:25Speaker 1: what I was in a conversation last week with someone
- 12:27Speaker 1: and they were talking about how much money does it
- 12:29Speaker 1: take to start a school? And they were saying all
- 12:31Speaker 1: these numbers, and I thought, damn, I adn't have none
- 12:34Speaker 1: of that. All the numbers they were saying three million,
- 12:38Speaker 1: five A and I was like, I didn't know you
- 12:41Speaker 1: got money, did start. I just figure you just found
- 12:44Speaker 1: a way to start. And I remember distinctly there was
- 12:50Speaker 1: a mayor in the city that we started our first school.
- 12:53Speaker 1: It's a little Latino dude, and he used to say,
- 12:56Speaker 1: I used to be in a gang, you know, old
- 12:59Speaker 1: clown and he would shake my hand real hard with Sean,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and he would like punch me in the arm, like,
- 13:04Speaker 1: don't I'm you know, I'm tough, like man, I was.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I act like it hurt. Oh man, man, you bag man.
- 13:10Speaker 1: You hit me too hard. Man. When I'm in my mind,
- 13:12Speaker 1: I'm thinking out to throw this little fool out of window.
- 13:14Speaker 1: But I'm thinking the whole time, thinking, all right, you're
- 13:19Speaker 1: gonna get your lips in, but I'm gonna come back soon.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And what you want, you want, your little ego stroke
- 13:25Speaker 1: doesn't mean anything to me. What I need is on
- 13:28Speaker 1: the other side of this, And that's why I'm talking
- 13:29Speaker 1: about eating things that you don't want to eat. What
- 13:31Speaker 1: I could have done when he was being his normal
- 13:34Speaker 1: little self is I could have come back at him like,
- 13:37Speaker 1: y oh man, you're winning the games, shut up right,
- 13:40Speaker 1: and then I might have won the argument. But I
- 13:42Speaker 1: wouldn't have a school in you and I wouldn't know
- 13:44Speaker 1: one another absolutely, And that's the key to what I
- 13:47Speaker 1: was just saying, is that a lot of people put
- 13:49Speaker 1: like I said, I want, I want, I want kind
- 13:53Speaker 1: of you start tot and they exceeded. I will and
- 13:57Speaker 1: guess what you lose because I will have to be
- 14:00Speaker 1: the I will do this. I will get up early,
- 14:02Speaker 1: I will sacrifice for my family, I will sacrifice for
- 14:07Speaker 1: the for the my social life. I will sacrifice and
- 14:09Speaker 1: sometimes in the relationship if they but you need to
- 14:12Speaker 1: explain to them what while the sacrifice is being made.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I will sacrifice for not living a lifestyle that that
- 14:18Speaker 1: I could live if I do that. And that's really
- 14:20Speaker 1: the key when I you know, the most positive thing
- 14:24Speaker 1: that I've seen is that you you managed to live
- 14:26Speaker 1: a balanced life because I've met his family, amazing wife,
- 14:29Speaker 1: amazing boys, and and that's what I'm hated now in
- 14:33Speaker 1: my life. You know, when I stop managing Steve, that
- 14:35Speaker 1: was one of the goals I wanted in my life.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Steve was balanced because I was just on that wheel,
- 14:39Speaker 1: just running and run and run and running, just just
- 14:41Speaker 1: closing deals, close and deal, but never relax and never
- 14:44Speaker 1: understanding the value that I could stop, but you've always
- 14:48Speaker 1: maintained that tell us the key. How have you been
- 14:50Speaker 1: able to maintain a balanced life in your path of success?
- 14:55Speaker 1: So to be honest with you, I don't know that
- 14:56Speaker 1: there's such a thing as balanced. There's alignment. And you'll
- 15:00Speaker 1: understand what I mean. When you're rocking with in your
- 15:04Speaker 1: case of a beautiful wife and children who need you
- 15:08Speaker 1: to not be part of your dream, you will never
- 15:12Speaker 1: achieve alignment. Your wife had to understand that my job
- 15:18Speaker 1: is to be on the road. That's my job, but
- 15:22Speaker 1: more importantly, it's my calling. So if you need me home,
- 15:28Speaker 1: there's no way to balance that. I can't be home
- 15:31Speaker 1: and be out at the same time. So what I
- 15:35Speaker 1: what I seek to do is to be honest with
- 15:38Speaker 1: myself and those around me. It's so funny you say this, boy.
- 15:41Speaker 1: So I was just saying to my sons this morning,
- 15:43Speaker 1: is you know they go to Uh it's really so trippy. Um,
- 15:47Speaker 1: we're riding into school today and UM, I said to them,
- 15:53Speaker 1: nobody has given more for these schools than you have.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Nobody They've been nice that you wanted me home to
- 16:02Speaker 1: tell me something, to share a story that you have
- 16:04Speaker 1: from school, or to show me a picture of something
- 16:06Speaker 1: that you drew, or or just to sit and watch
- 16:09Speaker 1: television with me. And I was not home and I
- 16:13Speaker 1: can't promise I'm gonna be home for a little while.
- 16:17Speaker 1: But you too, have given so much that my hope
- 16:22Speaker 1: is that you see it as your legacy, not that
- 16:25Speaker 1: you come and take over the schools, which would be dope,
- 16:27Speaker 1: right what father doesn't want that to happen, But more
- 16:31Speaker 1: important that you build upon it and whatever you do
- 16:34Speaker 1: in life, that people see that you've got a leg
- 16:38Speaker 1: up because you were part of something that you paid
- 16:41Speaker 1: for even before you knew you were packed. So for me,
- 16:45Speaker 1: brother Sean, what I think is important is to be
- 16:48Speaker 1: honest with those people in our lives about what it
- 16:52Speaker 1: is that our calling is and then that help them
- 16:55Speaker 1: help them to understand what they were doing. Also, I
- 16:58Speaker 1: have to be real brother that I've been working with
- 17:00Speaker 1: a long time. As you know, Brother Yusuf, he has
- 17:03Speaker 1: said to me, I'm so funny we're having this conversation.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So one of the reasons why I did so you know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you talked about the Disney Dreamers Academy. The reason I
- 17:12Speaker 1: did is initially, Rashan, is because you have said bro,
- 17:17Speaker 1: you are here running across the country. Your kids all
- 17:21Speaker 1: they see is that you're gone. They don't know because
- 17:24Speaker 1: it's before the TV stuff, you know, when you when
- 17:27Speaker 1: you are doing small gigs, people at home just no,
- 17:29Speaker 1: you're gone, and in their mind is glamorous right in
- 17:32Speaker 1: their mind, in their mind, you know you had. In
- 17:35Speaker 1: my case, I might you may be at a small
- 17:38Speaker 1: club of bar. I'll be at a small college with
- 17:41Speaker 1: fifteen students. You know what I mean, fifteen students in
- 17:44Speaker 1: in Iowa. In their minds, it's it's Dad is going
- 17:48Speaker 1: off and he's flying and doing and he's being treated. No,
