- 0:00All right, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain
- 0:03Peaks. We're back in the White
- 0:05Mountains. I haven't been up here in
- 0:07probably like a month. Been busy, been staying down
- 0:11South doing the local peaks. But we're back.
- 0:15I did the Osceola's today and it was full winter conditions.
- 0:19I mean, snow from the trailhead to the summits and it just feels
- 0:24good to be back anytime. Probably like once or twice a
- 0:28year I'll go like a few weeks, maybe a month, like November and
- 0:34April maybe. I don't get all the way up in
- 0:36the Whites for a month, but it always feels really good to be
- 0:40back, be back on the trails. Something about the air up, up
- 0:44in those peaks. I don't know.
- 0:45It just felt really good. I felt kind of back to normal,
- 0:49back in my element. And yeah, I really enjoyed the
- 0:52conditions today. And it was actually, it was
- 0:56decent winter conditions. It was better than like typical
- 0:59November shoulder season conditions.
- 1:01And but we're definitely getting into winter.
- 1:04So the topics I want to talk about today, I got a question
- 1:08about shoes, Rd. shoes, trail shoes, winter footwear.
- 1:12And I thought today, because it is like starting to get winter,
- 1:16we got snow in the high peaks and snow is coming cold weather.
- 1:20I wanted to talk about winter footwear, what I wear when I'm
- 1:25running out on these trails, as far as shoes, you know, spikes,
- 1:31snowshoes. I want to do kind of like a full
- 1:33breakdown of what I wear for footwear.
- 1:35I will touch on the road and trail shoes, what I wear during
- 1:38training, just so put that out there.
- 1:42And then I thought it would be a good time to talk about winter
- 1:45Strava segments, a hole Strava segment season, that's what some
- 1:52people call it. And then pair that with the
- 1:55winter FKTS and FKT culture talk.
- 2:00I have some thoughts about like the trail conditions during the
- 2:02winter, Strava segments in the winter, FKT in the winter.
- 2:05So we'll just talk about all that stuff because we really are
- 2:08getting into the winter running season, which by the way is one
- 2:11of my favorite seasons of running.
- 2:13Obviously the spring, the trail season, like when the trails are
- 2:16dry is awesome. That's probably like the
- 2:20favorite like spring into summer.
- 2:23But winter is probably like my second favorite time for trail
- 2:27running. When the when the trails up here
- 2:29get all snowed in and packed down, it can be really, really
- 2:32fun. So yeah, I figured do a few
- 2:35winter topics now that we're getting into that season, the
- 2:38JFK 50 Miller and the a Scutney backyard Ultra are happening
- 2:42today. I hadn't talked about the JFK 50
- 2:45Miller. Last week we did a Scutney
- 2:47backyard preview. So that's ongoing right now as
- 2:50we speak. So we won't have the results.
- 2:52We'll go go go through a next week's episode.
- 2:56But the JFK 50 Miller, honestly, it's going to be probably over
- 2:59pretty quick for some of the top guys.
- 3:00But yeah, JFK $50, one of like the oldest ultra marathons.
- 3:06I think this is the 63rd annual ultra marathon that JFK has run.
- 3:11So it's pretty much a road race. It's not really a trail race,
- 3:14but it's one of the big, you know, iconic US ultra marathons.
- 3:19And people go there, put down crazy times and and get pro
- 3:23crunch pro contracts from it. So that's kind of like just a
- 3:27fun race to follow. So that's going on today.
- 3:30Maybe we'll talk about next week.
- 3:32Next up we're going to talk about winter cross training this
- 3:38week. So in the last episode, I was
- 3:40sick this week at the beginning of the week, I was still
- 3:43feeling, you know, I wasn't really sick anymore, but your
- 3:46body's really weak. You're getting back into
- 3:48activity and everything. So I was kind of pulling out of
- 3:50it and it was really cold this week.
- 3:52So pretty much just in the trying to say in the mornings I
- 3:55did not want to go outside. And so I started, I did a couple
- 3:59cross training sessions at the gym and in the winter, honestly,
- 4:04I do a ton of cross training. And so I wanted to kind of dive
- 4:08into some of the things that I do and just talk about some of
- 4:10the cross training alternatives. You know, when it's when it's
- 4:14when you wake up and you check the temps, it's 20° out and
- 4:17you're like, I don't know if I want to go for an easy run right
- 4:19now. So we'll talk about cross
- 4:21training motivation minute. We're going to bring that back.
- 4:24I got another quote for you on that one.
- 4:27And all right, you shouldn't have given me spoilers.
- 4:30Yeah, no spoilers. And then the last topic I have
- 4:33here is Kung Fu Panda recap and Tiara.
- 4:37We're we're here. We're just going to, again, not
- 4:40elaborate further. You'll just have to wait till
- 4:42the end for those. So yeah, we got a few a few
- 4:45different topics here, some winter running topics, a couple
- 4:48races and then some fun stuff at the end.
- 4:51So that's what we got on the agenda.
- 4:55Yeah. So like I said, I did the
- 4:56Osceolas today. It was, honestly, it was, it was
- 4:59pretty good conditions. I hadn't been up here in a
- 5:01while. I was reading trail reports and
- 5:04trail reports give you a pretty good, you know, a lot of people
- 5:09do the trail reports. It's like New Hampshire or
- 5:11newenglandtrailconditions.com. They'll put out a lot of good
- 5:14trail reports. So you can always go through.
- 5:16And even if your peak that you're going to do isn't on
- 5:18there, you know, similar peaks nearby are going to be on there.
- 5:21And you can get a good idea of, hey, do I need to bring, you
- 5:24know, what do I need to bring really?
- 5:26But the conditions were good. I ended up bringing snowshoes
- 5:30and I brought micro spikes and I didn't wear either of them.
- 5:33I just used my studded trail runners for the whole time up to
- 5:37about 4000 feet. There's a little bit of snow,
- 5:39but it's all packed down and the rock, there's a ton of rocks
- 5:43still exposed. So snowshoes aren't really going
- 5:45to be good yet. Like you can't really use
- 5:48snowshoes when there's exposed rocks.
- 5:51And then above 4000 feet there was enough snow that snowshoes
- 5:54maybe like some powdery snow that snowshoes kind of would
- 5:57have made it a little bit easier.
- 5:59But it was nothing that I put them on for.
- 6:03You know, I usually if I don't have to wear them, if I'm not
- 6:05postling, I don't really like to put them on or carry them
- 6:08really, although I did carry them today.
- 6:11So All in all it was good conditions and I wanted to do a
- 6:14breakdown of the winter footwear that I used for different kind
- 6:19of conditions now that we're coming up into the season.
- 6:23So I guess starting at like layer one, there are a good
- 6:28amount of times in the winter that you can just wear trail
- 6:32shoes. That is like level 1.
- 6:35There are some people up here in the Whites that wear trail shoes
- 6:37just year round, you know, if the trails are kind of packed.
- 6:40And so if the trails, it's all going to be.
- 6:43So we'll talk about trail conditions of what, when to
- 6:45where, what when to where. What does that make sense?
- 6:49I think it does. But yeah, if you have a really
- 6:53good solid packed trail and it's not super soft and it's not icy,
- 7:00it's just like very compacted people with snowshoes came down,
- 7:04it melted a little bit and then it freezes overnight.
- 7:07Those trail conditions are like extremely good and you can just
- 7:11wear regular trail shoes not in not even wear studs.
- 7:15And so there, I wouldn't do that as much in the whites, but
- 7:19around me locally, there will be a lot of times that I, I just
- 7:22wear regular trail shoes. So that's like level 1.
- 7:26I wouldn't really recommend that for typical winter footwear, but
- 7:29that's like level 1 winter footwear.
- 7:31The next step up from regular trail shoes would be studded
- 7:35trail shoes. And this is what I wear 95% of
- 7:40the time in the winter. I mean, I usually wear, yeah, I
- 7:43would say 95% of the time I'm wearing some sort of studded
- 7:46trail shoe. So I don't, I have my truck, but
- 7:51they're basically you can either there's two options.
- 7:54You can buy a studded trail shoe.
- 7:57There's a few of them. I'll talk about which ones I
- 7:58have and it's pretty much they just have these really.
- 8:01I think they're carbon something.
- 8:04They're little like steep, maybe stainless steel or something.
- 8:07They're a little metal tips that are about like this big.
- 8:09They're they're when I first ordered them, I thought they
- 8:12were going to be like a couple inches, but no, they're, they're
- 8:15an eighth of an inch, maybe 1/4 of an inch.
- 8:18And there's probably like 10 to a dozen of them on the bottom of
- 8:21the shoes. So on all the big lugs, they'll
- 8:24be like these metal little studs in them.
- 8:27And they're not meant for if there's a few inches of loose
- 8:32snow. They're not meant for if it's
- 8:34icy. They're just meant for that
- 8:36solid compacted trail to give you just a little bit of bite.
- 8:41So it's not like plastic on snow and you're slipping because in
- 8:45the winter when the trails are snowy, there's a little bit of
- 8:49loose snow. You lose a lot of power just
- 8:54because the snow kind of dissipates because when you're
- 8:57running, you want as much, you want to take all the power and
- 9:01get it back to propel you forward.
- 9:03But when you're, oh, we got somebody here, don't mind that.
- 9:12But when you're running in loose snow, it's kind of like when
- 9:14you're running in the beach in sand.
- 9:16Everyone knows that feeling. It's super hard and you're just
- 9:19losing all of that power to like the sand and the snow.
- 9:22And so the idea is to lose no power and have a grip when you
- 9:26when your foot hits the trail, you use all that power to propel
- 9:30yourself forward and your foot isn't slipping.
- 9:32So those studs give you that little bit of slip resistance on
- 9:36a perfectly smooth trail. And they're they're way lighter
- 9:41than micro spikes. You don't have to carry micro
- 9:43spikes. And that is what my my default
- 9:46trail shoe is in the winter. Now I have two different kind of
- 9:49studded trail runners. One of them is like a lost
- 9:53Portiva Blizzard. They come with studs.
- 9:56It's a Gore Tex winter trail shoe and you can go with that
- 9:59option. That's a very good option.
- 10:01Most of the studded trail runners you're going to get are
- 10:04going to be Gore Tex. And like I said, Las Portiva
- 10:08makes some, I think speed goats. There's a Hoka came out with a
- 10:12version of the speed goats that are pretty much studded trail
- 10:14runners that are Gore Tex. There's marrow ones.
- 10:18All of these, I think they all have kind of typically built in
- 10:20Gators and they're good studded Gore Tex trail shoes.
- 10:25Hi there. How are you doing?
- 10:28Good. How are you?
- 10:33So those are great. I I recommend those.
- 10:37But another version of the studs, like you can buy a kit
- 10:41that just gives you those studs and you can screw them into any
- 10:46shoe that you want. So I have a couple of regular
- 10:49old trail shoes. I think they're speed goats that
- 10:51I put a billion miles on. Maybe not a billion, maybe a
- 10:54million. And I just basically screwed my
- 11:00own like DIY screws into the lugs of the speed goats and so
- 11:04out. So it's kind of just like a a
- 11:07crappy trail shoe beater. But those shoes are lighter than
- 11:10the Gore Tex and they're not Gore Tex.
- 11:13And so I have a regular trail shoe with studs in the Gore Tex.
- 11:16What are the difference between those two shoes?
- 11:18I think a lot of people in the winter you want to wear Gore
- 11:23Tex. They're waterproof.
- 11:25They, you know, obviously they're waterproof, windproof,
- 11:28weatherproof, and they're going to keep the snow and the cold
- 11:31and the water out. And I think that is very logical
- 11:34and I think they're very good shoes.
- 11:37But what Gore Tex shoes also do is they keep all the water in.
- 11:42So what I've noticed in my Gore Tex, if I go for a long day and
- 11:46I'm working decently hard, like on a run for a couple 23456,
- 11:52whatever hours, my feet will get sweaty.
- 11:55I mean, everything gets sweaty when you're running the winter,
- 11:57it's just cold and you have to manage it with layers.
- 11:59But your feet get sweaty and pretty much all that sweat that
- 12:03you work up in your shoes stays in your shoes.
- 12:06So I'll get done from a run with my gore tech shoes.
- 12:08I'll take them off and my shoes and socks will literally be
- 12:12dripping with water. And I don't really think that
- 12:17that's ideal either. I don't, you know, obviously
- 12:22don't want to be running just in wet socks and shoes and stuff,
- 12:24but I don't think that that's ideal either.
- 12:28So for me in the winter when it is maybe 20, like the wind
- 12:33chills like 20s and above. So it's really on the line of
- 12:37that freezing. You, you know, at the trailhead
- 12:39you're probably above freezing and then at the summit you're
- 12:42probably below freezing. I think a regular trail shoe
- 12:45with no gore Tex and no insulation.
- 12:48If you're running and you're going for a shorter day and the
- 12:51trails good, I think that a a non insulated UN gore Tex trail
- 12:56shoe works just as good. It's obviously not going to help
- 13:01you if you have to stop if you get hurt right then your feet
- 13:04are going to get really cold. But pretty much when your feet
- 13:07start sweating at those around freezing temps and you're not
- 13:11wearing Gore Tex, it'll dry out. And so you don't have those like
- 13:14super wet socks at the end of the day.
- 13:16And so again, it all depends on, I talked about risk in the
- 13:20mountains last week. It all depends on how far you
- 13:23going, What mountain are you going?
- 13:25Are you going for an hour run? Are you going for a 2 hour run,
- 13:27a 4 hour run? But I think there's a line when
- 13:30the temperatures around freezing and you're going for 2:00-ish
- 13:34hours. I think that line is like where
- 13:37I make the decision of do I want to go gore Tex or do I want to
- 13:40go non gore Tex with studs. Again, the gore Tex shoes are a
- 13:44little bit heavier. So like if I was doing a speed
- 13:47effort uphill or even uphill and downhill, I would rather go with
- 13:51the speed goats with the studs just because they're lighter.
- 13:56So that's what I can't kind of think about that second level of
- 13:59the studded trail runner shoes. Now Next up from the studs are
- 14:04pretty much your micro spikes. Everyone knows about micro
- 14:06spikes. There's, you know, they're just
- 14:10those things that you put around, you can put around boots
- 14:12and shoes and you hear them in that your bag.
- 14:15They're clanking around micro spikes is like the next step up
- 14:19from studded trash shoes. They're I don't know exactly how
- 14:22big they are, but they're probably like 1/2 an inch to an
- 14:25inch big. They'll give you some bite into
- 14:28ice, depending how sharp sharp they are, they'll give you some
- 14:32bite into the ice. They'll give you some bite into
- 14:34the snow. And if you're in your studded
- 14:37trail shoes and you're losing traction a little bit, you
- 14:39probably want the micro spikes. And there's there's a couple
- 14:43kinds of micro spikes. I think like the Cotullo micro
- 14:45spikes are usually like the golden standard, but I have a
- 14:49pair and I don't have them with me today too.
- 14:51I'll probably like make a video with all the the equipment out
- 14:55there. Just won't do that today.
- 14:57So you can see all of it, but I have a pair of, I think they're
- 15:00black Diamond, I don't know what they're called, but they are the
- 15:03tiniest, smallest, lightest pair of spikes that you can imagine.
- 15:10I think there's maybe 4 spikes total.
- 15:12They probably weigh 1/5 of what like the, the full micro spikes
- 15:16weigh. And it's basically a little bit
- 15:19more than the studs, but not that much more.
- 15:22And so one, if you're going to carry the micro spikes, so you
- 15:25don't need them at the start of the trailhead, you might need
- 15:28them up top. You don't know yet.
- 15:30I would rather carry something lighter.
- 15:32So I like those lighter black diamond tiny nano nano micro
- 15:38spikes and what I've noticed is those actually work really well.
- 15:46Like you don't need those full micro spikes a lot unless it is
- 15:50very steep or there is a lot of snow.
- 15:54And so if you're kind of in between, let's say like today I
- 15:57did, the Osceola is East Osceola is a extremely steep.
- 16:01It's like 25% grade for like a mile or something very, very
- 16:05steep that I would be like I'd probably if I have to put on
- 16:08spikes, I want my full micro spikes.
- 16:11But if you're going up something like a Garfield, which is like a
- 16:1310 to 15% grade the whole way, I wouldn't even carry those micro
- 16:18spikes. I would just carry the tiny
- 16:20black diamond ones. If I my studs aren't doing it,
- 16:23I'll throw those on. They're fast and they're just
- 16:25way lighter. And so this is kind of like my
- 16:29progression for microspikes. Next is crampons.
- 16:33So that is like if you're ice climbing, if there are sheets of
- 16:36ice that you need to go around, you probably need crampons.
- 16:39I don't own crampons and I'm probably not going to buy
- 16:43crampons. I'm not into the ice climbing
- 16:45ice fest. If a trail is super steep and
- 16:48super icy, I'm probably just not not going to go on that trail on
- 16:52that day. That's kind of how I don't know
- 16:54if I'm not as adventurous to some people, but I'm just
- 16:57probably going to avoid it. And if you ever get into a
- 16:59situation without crampons and it's very icy and steep and
- 17:02you're on the trail, you can usually just jump into the trees
- 17:06and it's not going to be fun. You get a bushwhack for a little
- 17:08bit and bushwhack around it. So you hear a lot about crampons
- 17:14unless there's, there are probably a, a couple places in
- 17:18the White Mountains on like regular hiking trails that you
- 17:22need crampons. But I think a lot of the times
- 17:27they're overhyped. And I don't think you really
- 17:29ever need crampons if you're if you're just going to pick a, a
- 17:32decent route on that day. And so crampons would be like
- 17:37the next step up. I and like I said, yeah, I don't
- 17:40use crampons, so and yeah, as far as like additional things to
- 17:45put on your feet, that is pretty much all of the traction devices
- 17:50before, alas, the snowshoes. The snowshoes would be the last
- 17:56kind of traction device. And I think trail runners, I
- 18:01don't know, some trail runners like the snowshoes.
- 18:04I like running, I like going faster and I don't like bringing
- 18:08or wearing the snowshoes if I don't have to.
- 18:11Now this is like a big topic. Like I feel like the hiking
- 18:15community is very much like you always need snowshoes.
- 18:17The trail runners are like no snowshoes.
- 18:20I'm like in the middle. I see.
- 18:22I, I think there are days where you definitely need snowshoes.
- 18:25And there I think there are days that snowshoes are very much
- 18:27overkill. I think it all has to do with
- 18:29post holing. But so anyway, but there are a
- 18:35couple types of snowshoes that I will say.
- 18:37So I have, I think they are Dion snowshoes.
- 18:41I think a couple in Vermont. I think it's just a husband and
- 18:44a wife that make them. They're lightweight running
- 18:47snowshoes and they're awesome. There's like as light of a
- 18:52snowshoe as you can get. And those are the ones that I
- 18:55typically go for. They're going to be less
- 19:01durable. You're going to go through them
- 19:03faster. They're not going to be as heavy
- 19:06and in a lot of deep snow, they're not going to work as
- 19:09well. They're going to be working
- 19:10harder. There's no televator for all the
- 19:15televator folks out there, but they're they're lighter.
- 19:19And so that is the option that I, I pretty much always go with.
- 19:23Now the next step up from like a light running snowshoe would be
- 19:27like a full scale, I don't know what you call it.
- 19:29Like the MSRS are like the big snowshoes around here.
- 19:33And MSR, very much metal, grippy, heavy, bulky, but
- 19:38extremely good traction, very durable, can go through 2 feet
- 19:43of snow, can break 2 feet of snow trail when there's 2 feet
- 19:48of snow on the trails, snowshoes.
- 19:51And so yeah, it depends on what what you're going to be doing.
- 19:53If you're going to be doing more hiking, more trail running, you
- 19:57got to see which one you want. All of these things that I
- 19:59talked about are very expensive, so it's nice to have a full kit
- 20:04of all this stuff. But sometimes you got to pick
- 20:06and choose. And I'm always going to choose
- 20:08lighter and just pick a better day and a better trail and a
- 20:12better trail condition to wear. So that is pretty much, yeah.
- 20:17That is like the winter footwear breakdown that I use.
- 20:21Like I said, I think if you're going to bring snowshoes, not
- 20:25bring snowshoes. I think it all depends on if
- 20:27you're going to post hole. For me, even if snowshoes make
- 20:32it easier, if there's like lots of that powdery dry, but you're
- 20:35not postholing, but there's like 3 or 4 inches of that powdery
- 20:38dry snow, I'm probably not going to bring my snowshoes just
- 20:42because it's it's going to be harder to move.
- 20:47Like you're going to lose a lot of momentum with your feet in
- 20:50the snow, but you don't have that extra weight of the
- 20:54snowshoes carrying them. And so I think like time wise
- 20:57when you're on a trail, I think it just evens out and I would
- 21:00just rather not deal with them. So that's my take on, on the
- 21:03snowshoes versus no snowshoes. And when it's when you're going
- 21:06to post hole, just bring snowshoes.
- 21:09I've been in situations where like, I should have really
- 21:12brought the snowshoes. If you post hole a couple times
- 21:15here and there, some people will scoff at you.
- 21:18It's not the end of the world. Like people postal once in a
- 21:21while, but if you get to a point where you're postaling every
- 21:24couple steps, you need snowshoes, go get snowshoes.
- 21:29So yeah, that's the winter footwear breakdown.
- 21:32And then the last thing I want to talk about was Gators.
- 21:34So I kind of mentioned it on the, on the Gore Tex trail
- 21:37shoes. There are lots of trail shoes
- 21:39that have little Gators built into them and it literally just
- 21:43looks like a sock. They just go over the ball of
- 21:45your ankle and it's kind of like a, yeah, a mesh fabric material
- 21:51that's stretchy flexible and it, it, it contours to your ankle.
- 21:59So it doesn't really let snowing essentially.
- 22:03Those are good. Honestly, I, I pretty much if
- 22:06I'm wearing the Gore Tex shoes with the Gators, I don't add
- 22:10extra Gators on top of those. Those work good enough.
- 22:13Does a little bit of snow get in?
- 22:15Yes. Does snow get on that part and
- 22:17then melt and then get in? Yes.
- 22:20But again, we're talking like your feet are getting sweaty,
- 22:22like things get sweaty in the winter and you just got to deal
- 22:25with it. And those Gators are usually
- 22:27good enough for me. Now, if those Gators aren't, you
- 22:30really want to keep all the snow out, you can get there basically
- 22:33ankle Gators, which are I think like an outdoor research kind of
- 22:38company is going to make those. And those are good.
- 22:42They're windproof, waterproof, and they're not going to let
- 22:46snow in. And I would usually, unless
- 22:48you're like breaking trail, I would just use the ankle ones.
- 22:52Next up from the ankle ones, the ones that most hikers are going
- 22:54to wear are going to be those ones that go up to your knees.
- 22:57And again, they're just like Gators, Outdoor Research, MSR,
- 23:00whatever all these companies make them.
- 23:03I think they are. They do a good job of keeping
- 23:06the snow out. They do a good job of keeping
- 23:08the water out. But they also you just get super
- 23:11sweaty underneath them. Hi there.
- 23:13How's it going? So yeah, the Gators.
- 23:20So again, like, it's good to keep all that water and snow
- 23:23out, but also you're just getting sweaty on the inside.
- 23:26So it's like, does it really make a difference?
- 23:29I don't know. Things are going to get wet and
- 23:31sweaty out there. And so for me, I don't even use
- 23:34either of those second two Gators unless there's like a
- 23:37foot or two of new snow. I just wear the Gators that are
- 23:41on the Gore Tex shoes or I don't even wear Gators at all.
- 23:43And I just deal with it. Yeah, that's that's what I do.
- 23:48And yeah, one note too, about stud.
- 23:52The last thing I want to say about the snowshoes, those
- 23:55studded trail runners, you can wear those on snowshoes, but
- 23:59sometimes those studs can tear up the fabric on your snowshoe,
- 24:03especially if you have like a lightweight running snowshoe.
- 24:06So just be careful about that. There are some Gore Tex trail
- 24:10shoes that don't have studs and I do have a pair of those.
- 24:14And if I really know that I'm going to be in snowshoes all
- 24:17day, I'll wear them without the studs, with the snowshoes
- 24:21because the snowshoes have traction.
- 24:23And. And then you aren't worried
- 24:27about damaging your snowshoes. OK, that is enough winter
- 24:31footwear talk. That's what I wear.
- 24:33If you don't know. Yeah.
- 24:37If you have any questions, let me know.
- 24:40OK Next up just regular shoes for running on the trails and on
- 24:44the road shoes. I am not a big gear person.
- 24:48I don't I'm I don't stay up to date on the latest shoes.
- 24:51I'm probably not the best person to ask, but this is just info to
- 24:54get out there for the roads actually back up my 1 belief in
- 25:00shoes. My one strong belief in shoes is
- 25:02if you're training high volume, especially if you're doing
- 25:05trails and roads or a little bit of a lots of different things,
- 25:08mix up what shoes you're wearing.
- 25:10Different shoes, different shapes, different foams,
- 25:13different types, different heel drops mix up.
- 25:17Everyone has a lot of shoes, wear them all.
- 25:19I think if you just wear 1 brand or one company all the time you
- 25:23can develop overuse injuries like little things with your
- 25:26feet or whatever. It just makes you kind of run in
- 25:28a certain way. I think mixing it up is great.
- 25:30That's why a lot of high volume runners like to do trail, like
- 25:34to mix in trails because trails you're not just stepping the
- 25:37same way every time, you're taking lots of different steps
- 25:39up, down, rocks, roots, and you have a less tendency for those
- 25:44overuse injuries. Same thing with the shoes.
- 25:47If you wear 1 shoe type, you're more prone to get like a hotspot
- 25:50or get used to whatever. If you wear 3 or 4 different
- 25:55shoes a week, which is probably what I do, you're going to just
- 25:59be less likely to develop those little little hot spots.
- 26:04So my one belief, mix up your shoes, whatever you're doing.
- 26:07Now, what kind of shoes do I have for Rd.
- 26:10I have Brooks Ghosts, I have Saucony Triumph, I think that's
- 26:15a good cushy Sue shoe. And then I have Saucony
- 26:19Endorphin Speeds. Those are like my 1 fast shoe.
- 26:25I think they have a carbon plate in them, but it's it's like one
- 26:28of the higher end faster shoes. And if I do regular Rd. stuff,
- 26:33I'm just wearing the regular Brooks of the Triumphs.
- 26:36If I'm doing speed work and I'm trying to go faster and maximize
- 26:39whatever splits that I'm trying to hit times intervals, I'll
- 26:42wear those carbon plated Saucony big shoes.
- 26:45I call them. I got my big shoes on.
- 26:48So that's what I'll wear on the roads.
- 26:50And honestly, I usually wear the Brooks too, like to the gym,
- 26:53like I just lift in those two. I don't know if that's really
- 26:55great for them, but I, I do do that.
- 26:59And then on trails I, I wear Hokas.
- 27:03I wear Hokas. I think Hokas, I don't know,
- 27:07some people like them, some people don't like them.
- 27:09I wear the Speed goats. I wear the Zionals.
- 27:12So the Zionals like a lighter shoe.
- 27:13If I'm doing something faster or something local, I just wear
- 27:16those. The speed goats I like in the
- 27:18whites. They got a lot of cushions, so
- 27:20if you're going down a downhill, they got a lot of cushion to
- 27:23absorb it. They got some lugs, some good
- 27:25grip if you're running. That's what I wear on the
- 27:31trails. I I have some craft I I've tried
- 27:34to a few different shoes and those are the ones that just
- 27:37that just work for me. I don't, I don't think I really
- 27:42am. I'm not a believer in a zero
- 27:44drop minimalist barefoot shoe. I think there's lots of cool
- 27:48research out there. I think human should be barefoot
- 27:54or whatever. That's how we used to walk in
- 27:56the woods that thousands of years ago.
- 27:58But I think humans aren't meant to run 100 miles and humans
- 28:03aren't meant to train high volume running.
- 28:07I don't think that's like what we were designed to do.
- 28:09I think we were designed to like walk for long distances, not do
- 28:12a ton of running. And so I, I just think that
- 28:17cushion is when you're doing high volume and doing these long
- 28:19efforts, I think you need cushion.
- 28:21That's just me. Maybe I just get hurt more than
- 28:22people, but that's my belief. And so I'll take the cushion
- 28:26over the like the 0 drops. I know a lot of people like the
- 28:29ultras. There's some different shoes.
- 28:31Topo makes a decent shoe, mountain runner there.
- 28:34There's Solomon's got some good. There's a lot of different shoes
- 28:37out there. And I think whatever is
- 28:40comfortable and you feel good in that should be the shoe you go
- 28:43to and mix it up. That's what I think about the
- 28:46shoes. Yeah.
- 28:49So that was that was the shoe talk, the gear talk.
- 28:52I will eventually do more of like a gear, a winter gear.
- 28:57I'll go through everything I bring into the mountains and
- 29:00I'll kind of just, yeah, maybe I'll throw that in a couple
- 29:02different podcasts, but I also will make some YouTube videos
- 29:05that show also to what I do there.
- 29:08But today was just the footwear. OK.
- 29:12Next up, we're done with the shoes.
- 29:15Next up we're going to talk about winter Strava segments,
- 29:19winter Strava segments. So I don't know if there's,
- 29:24there's not like controversy over this, but essentially
- 29:28everyone knows what Strava segments are.
- 29:29There are these public segments that can go and like race other
- 29:32people. There's leaderboards on Strava.
- 29:34Some of them are very competitive.
- 29:36Some of them, some of them are getting to the point where
- 29:38they're getting like a race esque.
- 29:40There are some segments that are very race esque.
- 29:42Obviously the, the run the whites put on the the segment
- 29:46challenge this year with all those the throwdown segments,
- 29:49which was kind of like definitely a race stuff.
- 29:51But there are other segments that are just like a lot of
- 29:54people have done them and people will go out and race them.
- 29:57And as popular as Strava has gotten more popular, as the
- 30:01segments have gotten more popular, obviously you're going
- 30:03to have more people going for them.
- 30:05They're going to get more competitive.
- 30:07Now, the one thing about the segments in the Whites, and this
- 30:09goes for any mountain terrain, but especially in the Whites
- 30:12that is like steep and technical is there are it's steep, it's
- 30:20technical, it's rocky. And that what's that's what
- 30:22makes running in the Whites very, very challenging in the
- 30:25winter when you get a lot of snow, you get a lot of 4000
- 30:28feet. People, gritters come out, they
- 30:31pack the trail down every single day with snowshoes or every
- 30:34single weekend at least when the trail gets packed down, when the
- 30:38the temperature gets above freezing for a little bit.
- 30:41So that trail kind of melts and really packs down good.
- 30:44And then overnight when it freezes, these trails, the rocky
- 30:48technical steep trails just become a highway.
- 30:52And you can bomb down these trails like you can go so fast
- 30:57down these trails in the winter sometimes if you get the good
- 31:00conditions. And so the Strava winter, a hole
- 31:05segment season is basically when you have a route, perfect
- 31:10conditions come along, somebody bombs it and runs it at like a 6
- 31:14minute pace or, or low or like a crazy pace that nobody could
- 31:17ever do in the winter or in the summer without risking break,
- 31:23break broken bones. And you can just go and get a
- 31:27bunch of crowns and get a bunch of segment times.
- 31:31And I think here are my thoughts on it.
- 31:34I think again, as everything's gotten more popular, more people
- 31:37are getting out. There's going to be a lot of
- 31:39segments that just start going down because people run in the
- 31:42winter. I think maybe 1020 years ago,
- 31:45not as many people ran in the winter.
- 31:47Trail running is getting more popular.
- 31:49Winter running is getting more popular.
- 31:51These trails up here getting more popular, so they get packed
- 31:53down. More and more people are running
- 31:56and a lot of these trails that get packed down, they have
- 32:00winter times on them. And once you get a winter time,
- 32:03it's very, very hard to get a summer time back.
- 32:08And is there something wrong with that?
- 32:11My answer no, there's not anything wrong with that.
- 32:14Don't hate the player, hate the game.
- 32:15It's like this, this, you know, it's a thing out here and if one
- 32:20person runs in the winter and you had that time, you got mad
- 32:23they took in the winter, just go out in the winter and take it
- 32:25back. That's what I think about.
- 32:26There's nothing really wrong with it.
- 32:28But if there is a time or a leaderboard with lots of summer
- 32:33times and the crown is a summertime, I think you should
- 32:37not be going out there in the winter and trying to bomb down
- 32:41that trail to get that time. It's just way faster.
- 32:45And so any crown in the whites, a downhill crown because uphill
- 32:52I think is easier in the summer. Uphill, I don't think the paved
- 32:56trail makes up for just the rocks and the grip and the
- 33:01summer conditions like not having to wear winter gear.
- 33:04So the uphill, uphill times are safe, but the downhill times, if
- 33:08there's a crown that is a dry summertime and you go purposely
- 33:14and take it in the winter, I think it's kind of lame.
- 33:20That's me personally, but it depends on the segment.
- 33:24There are a lot of people that go out for not an easy run, but
- 33:27they'll just go out on a regular run and they can take a shot of
- 33:31a time in the winter. And so I'm not going to go tell
- 33:33them like, Hey, you have to babe, go super slow on every
- 33:36trail. Like if you're just running and
- 33:38you get it, cool. Like I'm totally good with that.
- 33:41But if they're but it, but a lot of these times are getting
- 33:43competitive and if you have to go all out Max heart rate to get
- 33:47it and it's a summer time, you're doing it in the winter.
- 33:50That's what I think is kind of lame.
- 33:54Again, depending on how many people have done the segment.
- 33:56So if it's less than 100 people have done a segment, it's
- 34:00probably not like a super fast competitive time.
- 34:04And so there it's like, all right, you may not have been
- 34:06going super hard, like just go get crowned, whatever.
- 34:08It doesn't really matter. But if they're really hard to,
- 34:11if there's more than a couple hundred goes on it or someone's
- 34:14had a couple good, like just hard runs and they have in the
- 34:17summer, I just like the technical mountain running
- 34:22aspect of it. And I think once you make that a
- 34:25winter time, it's like you can't go back.
- 34:27You cannot take it back. I guess you could make your
- 34:29thing private, but so yeah, that's what I think about it.
- 34:34I think if there are like summertimes or boards with lots
- 34:37of summertimes to them, just just steer clear.
- 34:39Like there's so many good. Like if you want like a
- 34:42competitive time or like you want to race a downhill segment
- 34:45or you want to bomb, like bombing down mountains are just
- 34:48super fun, but Max heart rate bomb all out.
- 34:51If you're going to do it, there's tons of winter downhill
- 34:54times out there. Do it on the time on one of
- 34:56those trails that already have it.
- 34:58Now there are a handful of trails that are like immune to
- 35:01this winter downhilling because like all the roads get closed in
- 35:06the winter. So triple I Rd. the Zealand Rd.
- 35:09like all of these different roads, Jefferson Notch Rd. all
- 35:13of these roads get shut so the trails don't get packed down.
- 35:17And so you can't do a fast time on a downhill where the trail
- 35:21head is on a closed Rd. So Tecumseh from triple I, I
- 35:25would, I actually don't know off the top of my head, but I'm I'm
- 35:27sure that's not a winter time. Osceola's from triple I I'm sure
- 35:31that's not a winter time. Jefferson from Jefferson Notch
- 35:35Rd. I'm sure that's not a winter
- 35:37time. So all of these different times
- 35:40are like pristine summer conditions and they get to keep
- 35:46it like that. So if you're if you're looking
- 35:47for a time that you don't want to, you want to send a downhill,
- 35:49like you want to have a good downhill RIP and you want a
- 35:52crown that doesn't get taken by the winter, just go on one of
- 35:55those segments. Another note too is, and this is
- 36:00all like like crown seeking, like crown chasing.
- 36:05I think there are definitely different if you're doing like a
- 36:08time trial on a mountain, like Chris Daly has his blog, Chris
- 36:12Daly's blog is awesome. If you like the White Mountains,
- 36:15if you like knowing about trails, he probably has one of
- 36:17the best blogs informations out there on anything Whites
- 36:21Mountain, White Mountains 4000 footer related.
- 36:24That dude loves the White Mountains and he's just a good
- 36:27dude. And he has this thing where over
- 36:31like decade he's basically wanted to do as fast as he can
- 36:35up and down 1 summit at a time. And in his case, a lot of the
- 36:40time the fastest way to do it is in the winter.
- 36:43And so that's like a different a passion project.
- 36:45Like he doesn't care about Strava crowns, like he's not
- 36:47going out there just hunting for crowns.
- 36:49And so I think that if you have like a passion project like
- 36:54that, I think that's cool. If so, like I'm not like hating
- 36:58on on winter downhill running. Like I go out there and I'm
- 37:01going to definitely going to bomb some downhills in the
- 37:03winter. But you know, if you're if
- 37:05you're, yeah, like I said, if you're aiming at a summertime in
- 37:08the winter, then that's where the tables get a little bit
- 37:10turned. If you want to do it fair game,
- 37:12like I think do it like there's nothing against it, but it's not
- 37:17as good. And if I look at a board and I
- 37:19see number 1 is a winter and I see number 2 is a summer, I'm
- 37:22thinking I'm more impressed by that summertime on a downhill
- 37:25board. Now this raises the question,
- 37:27should there be winter Strava segment boards or and and non
- 37:32winter Strava segment boards? I don't know like if Strava
- 37:37segments get super popular, they keep getting more popular than
- 37:40at some point maybe it is warranted.
- 37:43Like I would be interested in seeing that information.
- 37:46I think it'd be cool to see who has the best top ten, who's like
- 37:49the best technical dry mountain runners on certain section
- 37:53segments. Because the other thing in the
- 37:56winter is if you can just come up in the on the weekends, it's
- 38:01hard. There's a lot of people out
- 38:02there. So it's hard to bomb nut rails
- 38:04sometimes. It just snows every Saturday or
- 38:07rains every Saturday. So don't get good conditions.
- 38:09If you come out on a Monday, Tuesday, like you don't have to
- 38:11work. And you can come up on Monday,
- 38:13Tuesdays, after the trails have gotten packed down, melted out,
- 38:16froze up. Those are the best days to come
- 38:18out here. So yeah, Do we want a summer
- 38:22winter board? Maybe one day, but that leads us
- 38:26into the winter FKT talk that I want to talk about.
- 38:31And so this is like a similar, this is kind of a similar topic.
- 38:35And I think the Prezi traverse FKT, there was 1.
- 38:39There was, if you go on the FKT website, there was a big hooting
- 38:42ha about, you know, back and forth about should the Prezi
- 38:45traverse be run in winter conditions versus summer.
- 38:48And ultimately I, I don't know how the time shook out, but
- 38:52ultimately it was determined that if you run the Prezi in the
- 38:55winter, it should be a different category.
- 38:57It shouldn't be the overall Prezi FKT because obviously
- 39:03running the Prezis in the winter is way faster.
- 39:05The northern Prezis, if they just get packed down into a
- 39:08highway. Like you can not, never touch
- 39:11those times in a million years on those crazy technical rocks
- 39:16in the summer. And so winter has its own
- 39:21challenges. And it's not saying that it's
- 39:22just like a cake walk in the winter, but it's two different
- 39:26kinds of competition. And I think as Trail Run is
- 39:32getting more popular, more developed, like it used to just
- 39:36be races. Now FKT is a lot of FKTS are
- 39:39like almost like race efforts. And so eventually I think Strava
- 39:49segments are going to kind of be like the old, the old FKTS.
- 39:51And eventually you're going to be racing Strava segments are
- 39:55going to be like the new FKT. And it's just something to think
- 39:59about. So as the FKTS got more popular,
- 40:02there's a winter section for a lot of these different FKTS.
- 40:06And I think like the premier ones and the whites, like I know
- 40:09there's a hot traverse winter. There's a lot, the 48 footers
- 40:13winter, the Prezi winter. I'm sure there's a Pemi winter,
- 40:19there's a winter category for the premier FKTS up here because
- 40:23it's totally different conditions.
- 40:25And if you want to erase that and be competitive on that, it's
- 40:29just two different categories go against your own category.
- 40:32So that all makes sense to me. I guess that all kind of makes
- 40:35sense, But again, there are some FKTS like I think there are some
- 40:42FKTS, right, just regular FKTS that have been done in the
- 40:46winter. So for me, if they don't make a
- 40:50winter category in the, in the, it's already ran in the winter,
- 40:53then you can go out and you can run that same FKT if you want to
- 40:57do it in the winter. But if there is an FKT that
- 41:01there's no winter designation for it, it's run in the summer
- 41:04and you go out and run it in the winter.
- 41:07I don't know. I think there should be a
- 41:08different designation for that because it's just a different
- 41:12competition. This is going to be a special.
- 41:14This is going to be a special treat.
- 41:15This is not, this is not my joke.
- 41:17But this because you've lasted this long, I always think like
- 41:21not a lot of yeah, I always think that the people that
- 41:25lasted this long. Thank you.
- 41:26I appreciate you listening. I really hope you enjoy the
- 41:28podcast. I'm trying to like, keep
- 41:30bringing you guys different info and but yeah, if you've made it
- 41:34this long, you're going to get this golden nugget.
- 41:37Here's a little joke for you. There was a cop on on the
- 41:41highway, just stopped on the on the Interstate.
- 41:44And he sees a car guy driving a car down the highway and in the
- 41:47back seat, there's a bunch of Penguins.
- 41:50And so he goes and pulls the car over and he's like, what are you
- 41:53doing with these Penguins? Like you got to bring these
- 41:55Penguins to the zoo. And the guy's like, OK, sorry,
- 41:58officer, I will do that. And he takes off the next day,
- 42:02comes around and the cops sitting in the same spot, and he
- 42:06seems the cargo go by again. And the guy's driving the car.
- 42:10And in the back seat are the guy still has the Penguins in the
- 42:14back seat. And all of the Penguins are
- 42:16wearing sunglasses. So this guy throws on his lights
- 42:19and he's like, and he stops and he's like, hey, I thought I told
- 42:22you that you had to bring these Penguins to the zoo.
- 42:25And the guy goes, yeah, I took him to the zoo today.
- 42:28We're going to the beach. OK, so if you made it through
- 42:36the FKD talk, there's the joke, there's for your for your
- 42:40courage. OK, Next up, the JFK 50 Miller
- 42:45in a Scotty backyard. I talked about these already.
- 42:48They're going on right now. We'll have the results next
- 42:50week. Boom.
- 42:51Next topic, winter cross training.
- 42:55Yeah, in the winter it gets pretty hard for me to run every
- 43:00single morning when it's in the single digits, in the teens, in
- 43:05the 20s. I think on an easy run, like in
- 43:08the fall, if I go on an easy run, I don't even really sweat
- 43:11that much. It's very, I do my easy runs
- 43:14very easy, keep them very light. I don't get super warm.
- 43:18So in the winter it is you have to really bundle up to stay warm
- 43:24on your easy runs. But then your hard runs, it's
- 43:26like you have to really start cold and then eventually you'll
- 43:29you'll or you're going to get too hot if you do have lots of
- 43:32layers. And it's just kind of an added
- 43:34stress. And I think that's why a lot of
- 43:37people don't move out of New England and don't trade in New
- 43:39England because the winters are very tough.
- 43:41And for me, I like cross training a lot.
- 43:44I think probably the best cross training in the winter would be
- 43:47cross country skiing or ski touring.
- 43:51Unfortunately, I don't want to deal with all the equipment, get
- 43:54all the equipment. I like, you know, I like to go
- 43:56hike, run on the weekends in the week.
- 44:00There's not really snow around me where I could do that.
- 44:03It's very expensive. These are the reasons why I
- 44:05don't get into the skiing as much.
- 44:07I think that is like the ideal cross training, ideal for fun,
- 44:11ideal for mixing it up, doing some different muscle groups.
- 44:13And if you're into skiing, cross country skiing, ski touring,
- 44:17good for you. That is awesome cross training.
- 44:19I admire you. And one day, I mean, if I lived
- 44:23up here, I would definitely get into that stuff.
- 44:24It's just around me. It's it doesn't make practical
- 44:27sense where we don't have snow all, you know, for the whole
- 44:30winter, a lot of winters. And so I think that's like the
- 44:33ideal cross training the winter. But for me, I really just go to
- 44:37the gym. I do stairs, the Stairmaster, I
- 44:42do the incline treadmill, I do the bike, I do the elliptical.
- 44:45And for me, what really gets me through the winter, I think one
- 44:49actually at the gym I go to, they have a bike with a little
- 44:52kind of a Peloton E screen. It's not a Peloton, but it has a
- 44:54screen. I'll actually, I'll flip it.
- 44:56You can go and put on like YouTube videos or it has kind of
- 44:59like a video of like different little countries, you know,
- 45:03whatever that thing is called. So it's like you're, you're
- 45:08bicycling through Paris, but so that's kind of like
- 45:14entertaining, but you kind of get bored of that cuz just a
- 45:16bike on the bike trainer with no music or no anything.
- 45:19It's just brutal. But I like going on YouTube and
- 45:23I like throwing on for some reason cross country skiing,
- 45:26like Olympic cross country skiing events, biathlon, all of
- 45:29these things electric to watch. And for some reason the winter
- 45:33just gets me in the mood to cross train.
- 45:35So if you get thrown a good video, that's a good way to
- 45:38cross train. I think the indoor bike is for
- 45:40me the most boring cross training, but you got to do it.
- 45:45But I do a lot of Stairmaster and incline treadmill and my key
- 45:49to kind of keep it fresh. Obviously get some headphones
- 45:53and listen to music, podcasts, videos, whatever that all that
- 45:55stuff helps. But for me, if you're trying to
- 45:57do like a couple hours at the gym of cross training, mixing it
- 46:01up 1 is really good to kind of emulate the mountain training.
- 46:05So I'll go like Stairmaster for 1/2 hour, incline treadmill for
- 46:091/2 hour, back to the stairs. Maybe I go do the sled at the
- 46:12gym, like pushing and pulling the sled back and forth, really
- 46:15mixing it up and then go to elliptical for 1/2 hour when I
- 46:19have like half hour bursts of things.
- 46:21Then you can break it up like, oh, I'll just do 15 minutes and
- 46:24then I'll do another 15. And then you get through that
- 46:26and it's like, oh, it's going pretty quick.
- 46:27And then I've been here for a couple hours and that's like a
- 46:29good like indoor mountain day I call them.
- 46:31And so we're getting to the point where I think cross
- 46:36training, if you just grind to the winter and you run outdoor
- 46:39in the winter, you're probably just missing a little bit of
- 46:45you're probably taking in more stress than you're actually
- 46:47gaining. And I think some quality indoor
- 46:51cross training can actually benefit you more.
- 46:55And so in the winter, lean into the cross training because in
- 47:00the summer, which you usually just slam in miles in the
- 47:02winter, get back to weightlifting, get back to cross
- 47:05training, get some different strength.
- 47:07When you're on the bike and you do a little bike workout, you
- 47:09get exposed like, oh, my legs aren't as strong as I thought it
- 47:11was. If I do a Stairmaster workout,
- 47:12whoa, I have a little bit more to work on here.
- 47:15And so it's a good way to mix it up and kind of push yourself in
- 47:19the gym. So if you haven't really re
- 47:23introduce yourself to the gym, weightlifting and indoor cross
- 47:26training, do it, train hard and you're probably going to give
- 47:29get some gains that you've been missing off by just running
- 47:33every day, especially in the winter.
- 47:36For me, my philosophy is you want to run every day if you're
- 47:41in the build up to an ultra, But if you're not in the build up to
- 47:44an immediate ultra and you're just developing speed, strength,
- 47:47it's good to do all the different things.
- 47:50I think if you just run six or seven days a week and that's all
- 47:52the training you do, you're probably missing out on some
- 47:55strength gains and just some different skills that are going
- 47:59to benefit you in the mountains. On roads you probably don't need
- 48:02much other skills than just running on the roads, but in the
- 48:06mountains I think upper body, lower body, strength, agility,
- 48:09athletic ability, all these things help you outside of just
- 48:12running economy and fitness. You can get fitness cross
- 48:15training. The only thing you don't get as
- 48:17much as running economy, but in the mountains you don't need it
- 48:19as much. You need hiking economy, you
- 48:21need downhill economy and all that stuff you can actually get
- 48:25in the gym. So get to the gym, do some cross
- 48:29training. It's going to benefit you.
- 48:32OK, last second to last thing, kind of last thing motivation
- 48:38minute. The quote is the secret
- 48:42ingredient is dot dot dot nothing.
- 48:48To make something special, you have to believe it is special.
- 48:51This is from Kung Fu Panda. The little the little the panda
- 48:55bear asks his dad what's the secret ingredient to the soup.
- 48:59And the dad goes the secret ingredient is nothing.
- 49:03To make something special you have to believe it's special.
- 49:07And and the panda goes at first he's mad and then he goes, the
- 49:11secret ingredient is nothing. And then when the Kung Fu Panda,
- 49:15he goes and gets the dragon scroll, he opens the dragon
- 49:18scroll because he was chosen the dragon warrior.
- 49:22There's nothing on the scroll. The big secret everyone's been
- 49:25waiting for, there's there is nothing.
- 49:30And so I like that quote clearly I just watched Kung Fu Panda.
- 49:36I saw the quote and I was like, I want, I think I want to watch
- 49:39Kung Fu Panda. So I watch Kung Fu Panda.
- 49:41But I really think that this is a good quote.
- 49:44So the secret ingredient is nothing to make something
- 49:46special, you have to believe it's special.
- 49:50I think what you, what I hear over and over and over about
- 49:55anything that's done anything great or extraordinary or
- 49:58seemingly impossible, they there's no, there's no secret
- 50:04ingredient, there's nothing special that separates them from
- 50:07you. That like a champion, I think
- 50:13there's lots of difficulties that you can bring in, but like
- 50:15a champion is not that much different than the top 20
- 50:19competitors. They just work every single day,
- 50:25do the right things every single day for years.
- 50:28That's what gets them there. And so, yes, there's lots of
- 50:32talent, there's lots of genetics in this thing, but I think
- 50:38there's a lot less than you think.
- 50:39And so you need to make sure that you are doing all of those
- 50:45little things. If you have big goals, probably
- 50:48you're not dreaming big enough, but if you want to reach them,
- 50:50there's nothing crazy that you need.
- 50:52There's nothing that you don't have.
- 50:54All you need to do is grind and be disciplined every single day.
- 51:00Do what whatever that goal is, whoever can do that goal in your
- 51:03mind, do what they would do every single day for a long time
- 51:06and you will get there in the second-half of that quotes, the
- 51:10quote is you have to believe it's special.
- 51:13You hear the top athletes of all different sports, all different
- 51:17walks of life. A lot of them have this
- 51:21unbelievable, UN deniable belief in themselves.
- 51:27And I think belief is something almost as necessary as talent,
- 51:34as necessary as hard work. I think you have to 100% believe
- 51:40every single day in what your goal is and what you're capable
- 51:44of to really get to that next level.
- 51:48And so obviously to become the Dragon Warrior, there's no
- 51:52secret ingredients and you just have to truly believe that
- 51:57you're a dragon Warrior. And then you can beat that, that
- 51:59mean little tiger guy who was in jail all those years.
- 52:04But I think it's just, it's a theme that I've heard about.
- 52:08Like everyone listens to motivational things.
- 52:10You see online, you see these different things.
- 52:13And I really think it is a theme from all these people who have a
- 52:18goal set out to do it and accomplished it.
- 52:21They just reiterate, there's nothing special.
- 52:25You just have to work way harder than you're working right now
- 52:28and believe in whatever you're working for, do it for a long
- 52:32time and you will get there. And so that's just like the,
- 52:35the, the if you have a dream, you're probably not dreaming big
- 52:39enough and you're definitely not working hard enough.
- 52:41That's what I think about things.
- 52:42Nobody, you look at somebody else who has something that you
- 52:45want or something they did, something that you want to try
- 52:47to do. There's nothing different
- 52:49between you and them. They have just worked like they
- 52:54wanted it and they believed hard enough.
- 52:57So work harder, believe more and you're going to accomplish your
- 52:59goals. That being said, yeah, I watched
- 53:02the Kung Fu Panda. I think I watched it when I was
- 53:04younger. I definitely remember kind of
- 53:06bits of it or watching it. That movie is pretty electric.
- 53:09It's a good short movie, hour and a half.
- 53:12You really kind of, it wasn't super drawn out.
- 53:15There's some funny things. It's obviously a kids movie.
- 53:17It's a cartoon, but that old turtle, he's got some some good
- 53:22quotes in there every time. That old turtle with the canes
- 53:26walking around talking to people.
- 53:28Listen to what that guy is saying.
- 53:29That was his quote, actually. No, this actually wasn't his
- 53:32quote, but he's got some good quotes in there.
- 53:35It's a good movie. Yeah.
- 53:37If you haven't seen it, watch it.
- 53:40As soon as you know, they say, oh, my God, Ty Lee or whatever
- 53:44his name was going to escape prison.
- 53:46He's going to come and destroy the town or he's going to, you
- 53:49know, come into the valley and take over the the shifu.
- 53:53The master sends out a little bird to the prison.
- 53:56He tells the prison guard, hey, you got to double your security.
- 54:00The old turtle had a vision that this guy's going to break out
- 54:02and terrorize the the village. And as soon as the scene goes in
- 54:07there, I shouldn't ruin it. Actually, Yeah, if if you're
- 54:11this is the end of the episode, if you want to watch Kung Fu Pan
- 54:14after this, stop it right now because I'm going to spoil the
- 54:16whole thing. But you walk in there and the
- 54:18little bird comes in there and there's all these big tough
- 54:20rhiners are like, what do you do?
- 54:21What do you mean we need to double your God?
- 54:23You think this isn't tough enough?
- 54:25And the rhinos, like I'm just the messenger.
- 54:26And the little birds like I'm just the messenger.
- 54:28He's like, let's, we're going to go look at Ty Lee and they go
- 54:32down on this big cave with all the security, thousands of
- 54:34little rhinos and hippos securing this one prisoner.
- 54:37This guy's like super bad or whatever, this tiger and the,
- 54:41the, the bird kind of jumps up and 1 feather floats in the air.
- 54:45And immediately I'm like that, that feather is going to be the
- 54:48reason why the tiger breaks out. And then they go down and of
- 54:51course the feather falls to the tiger.
- 54:53He takes it with his tail. He unlocks the thing with his
- 54:55tail. The tiger breaks out.
- 54:57And I think it's it's it's very ironic because if the Shifu
- 55:01didn't send the little bird to the prison, Ty Lee never would
- 55:05have got out and that prophecy wouldn't have been fulfilled.
- 55:10So it's kind of a it's kind of like, I don't know, I was kind
- 55:13of thinking about that. That was, I thought that was
- 55:15pretty deep for Kung Fu Panda. And then essentially, yeah, the
- 55:19big fat panda got picked as the Dragon Warrior over the the, the
- 55:24five, you know, Kung Fu master, black belt warriors.
- 55:29And everyone was really mad at the panda because how could the
- 55:31panda? He stinks at Kung Fu.
- 55:34And then the Shifu master was super mad.
- 55:38And eventually, yeah, eventually the panda finds out there's no
- 55:43secret ingredient. He he has these different powers
- 55:45because he loves food so much. All these other warriors, they
- 55:48try to go out and stop Ty Lee before he comes back and
- 55:51destroys the village. And of course, the only person
- 55:53that can that can save everybody, the panda.
- 55:56And the panda is hitting the tiger with, he doesn't know any
- 56:00Kung Fu, but he's hitting them with his big belly.
- 56:03He's going up. He's doing all these different
- 56:05things. He's getting lucky.
- 56:06He's falling down. He's he's sitting on the tiger.
- 56:09And he's so fat that the tiger gets hurt.
- 56:11He stepped on the Tiger's toes. And then he hit him with the the
- 56:14squad douche because he understood the the dragon scroll
- 56:21and he understood the power of the Skedouche.
- 56:24And he ultimately defeated Ty Lee.
- 56:26And yeah. So that was my Kung Fu Panda
- 56:30recap electric movie. You should watch it.
- 56:33Good quotes in there. And then the last thing I
- 56:35mentioned on Tiara, I was kind of, I was in my tea era for five
- 56:40days. I was sick.
- 56:42I was doing these herbal teas and I it was very, you know, it
- 56:45was getting very cold the winter and the little warm tea was I've
- 56:49never been a tea guy. I like coffee in the especially
- 56:52in the winter. Once in awhile, like on the
- 56:53weekend, I'll just have a cup of coffee.
- 56:55I don't drink it every day, but I had tea a few.
- 56:58I was having tea twice a day this week and I was like, oh,
- 57:02yeah, I'm. I'm embracing this tea life.
- 57:04It's warm, it's cozy. I'm going to get in bed and
- 57:07watch a little something in the blankets with this tea.
- 57:10I was enjoying the tea era. I haven't had a tea in three
- 57:12days, so I think I'm over it. But if you've been sleeping on
- 57:16tea, try it this winter and try it while watching Kung Fu Panda.
- 57:20All right, that is. That is enough for today.
- 57:24Yeah, I got to get going. Anyway.
- 57:25We're over an hour. Thank you for listening.
- 57:28Again, I appreciate the the, the support.
- 57:31Hopefully this has been helpful. We're going to keep doing
- 57:35different topics. Let me know if you like the the
- 57:37training topics more, if you like the gear topics more, the
- 57:41race coverage more. I'm not really always 100%
- 57:44caught up on the news like I know the races that I like, but
- 57:48if there's something that I'm missing, you're like, oh, this
- 57:50guy totally missed about talking about this.
- 57:52I probably just haven't seen it. And so let I'll look into it and
- 57:56I'll I'll give you my thoughts on it.
- 57:59And another kind of exciting thing is I'm working, I'm
- 58:02working on getting my ultra on it, ultra running coaching
- 58:06certificates or certification. There's a couple different ones
- 58:10that I think are valuable. So I'm doing some getting those
- 58:14and ultimately hope to do some some coaching in the ultra
- 58:17running mountain running realm. And I've learned a few things
- 58:23that I think are interesting and a few things that are kind of
- 58:26that I've I've learned through my own training.
- 58:28And I'm like, I knew this worked and I just didn't know the
- 58:30scientific reasons. But here, here are the
- 58:32scientific reasons. And so I'm going to do a couple
- 58:35podcasts about some of the things that are very important
- 58:39that I think about training that I think people should be
- 58:41incorporating. So we'll talk about some of
- 58:43those. Yeah, we'll do some more
- 58:47training theory talk. We'll do some more winter stuff.
- 58:50And we're just going to keep these episodes rolling.
- 58:52So that's all I have for today. I appreciate everybody watching.
- 58:58I'm going to keep doing these if you guys keep watching.
- 59:00So if you made it this far, thank you.
- 59:02You're the reason why I'm still going.
- 59:04I really appreciate it. We'll see you next time.
- 59:07Peace.
