- 0:34Speaker 1: what I do. Appearing on the show today is Wow.
- 0:37Speaker 1: It's a Wow show, A Wow show. The legendary singer, songwriter, actress,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and entrepreneur padded Label. He had a fourteen year NBA
- 0:46Speaker 1: career and in two thousand three won the championship with
- 0:48Speaker 1: the San Antonio Spurs and today he is a top
- 0:51Speaker 1: college basketball NBA analyst Steve Smith. He's the pioneer of
- 0:56Speaker 1: the black stand up comedy movement and you heard his
- 0:59Speaker 1: voe in top animated family movies like Disney's Planes and
- 1:04Speaker 1: the sequel planes, Fire and Rescue, Charlotte's Well, all those
- 1:08Speaker 1: Madagscar movies, Ice Age and Dr Doolittle too. That will
- 1:12Speaker 1: be Centric the Entertainer. And finally, he's a stand up comedian,
- 1:17Speaker 1: television host, actor, and radio personality. That's my man, Ricky
- 1:21Speaker 1: Smilet too old. Let's go. I'm ready, it's time. He's
- 1:26Speaker 1: on the line. Let's go and start talking to this brother.
- 1:29Speaker 1: My first guest is an original king of comedy. He's
- 1:33Speaker 1: a pioneer, like I said earlier, black stand up comedy
- 1:36Speaker 1: because he played my comedy club way back in n
- 1:38Speaker 1: eighteen nineteen ninty too, and I knew that was a
- 1:41Speaker 1: black comedy club. You know him from the Steve Harvest
- 1:44Speaker 1: sitcom Here's this was this one starts to take off
- 1:46Speaker 1: for him, the number one rated Super Bowl commercials, number
- 1:50Speaker 1: one rated box office barbershop movies. And now you can
- 1:54Speaker 1: see him every week on the number one rated sitcom
- 1:56Speaker 1: on cable TV, the new TBS comedy The Last O J.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Please work with the money making conversation, Cedric the Entertainer,
- 2:06Speaker 1: what's up? Man? He said, I don't introduce you, got you.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I got to introduce you. You can't out with it right,
- 2:14Speaker 1: there then you don't answer the last O G got
- 2:16Speaker 1: the last O J. Blah blah blah blah, god, the
- 2:20Speaker 1: last JA. Oh my god, I can't believe I said
- 2:29Speaker 1: the last O J. Hey, Man, I said in front
- 2:32Speaker 1: of your behind, the last O G. To do it
- 2:36Speaker 1: for you, man, one of the top competents in the country.
- 2:39Speaker 1: That's classic, man. You know where my head is, Man,
- 2:44Speaker 1: that's just hearing what you're doing, man, and the history
- 2:47Speaker 1: and the start of it all. And and to see
- 2:49Speaker 1: today man, to be on the number one cable comedy
- 2:52Speaker 1: The Last O G on TVs. I've seen the show
- 2:56Speaker 1: and I just want to tell everybody that we started
- 2:59Speaker 1: doorg sitcom and television. While back it was just about
- 3:03Speaker 1: Neilsome ratings. But now you're in that multi media platform
- 3:06Speaker 1: where you know, it's the v O, D DVR, social media,
- 3:12Speaker 1: your smartphones, you know, it's streaming. There's so many layers,
- 3:17Speaker 1: and so when you when you don't understand that, how
- 3:20Speaker 1: are you today? When you talk about your brand? How
- 3:23Speaker 1: do you promote your brand? It's very important that you
- 3:26Speaker 1: participate now, correct, Yeah, yeah, I mean it is the thing.
- 3:30Speaker 1: You do have to participate of course. Uh, social media
- 3:33Speaker 1: is becoming more and more a lead of how people
- 3:36Speaker 1: recognize you and come to know you. I mean, the
- 3:39Speaker 1: fan bases continue to grow, they get younger, and those
- 3:42Speaker 1: are the people that come into what would be the
- 3:45Speaker 1: money buying share of the you know, having the younger
- 3:49Speaker 1: people that come up, and this is the audience that
- 3:51Speaker 1: most media people want. They want the younger folks who
- 3:55Speaker 1: are buyers, and then who's gonna grow can eventually be
- 3:59Speaker 1: the headholes of household. So that's a big And then
- 4:02Speaker 1: just trying to be a part of really relevant projects
- 4:05Speaker 1: as far as being a you know, actor and a comedian,
- 4:07Speaker 1: I start to stay relevant, you know, stay on stage. Uh,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you know, I'm still a part of the you know,
- 4:12Speaker 1: the large one of the largely tour. We just did
- 4:14Speaker 1: our one hundred show, the comedy Get Down, touring around
- 4:17Speaker 1: the country doing arenas. That's still great, tot live showing
- 4:21Speaker 1: up in your city on that stage. You know, um,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know, in the opportunity to you know, to talk
- 4:26Speaker 1: to guys like you at all times. You know, people
- 4:29Speaker 1: who are keeping their you know, they you know, their
- 4:31Speaker 1: head and finger on the pulse of it. You know. Uh,
- 4:34Speaker 1: that's what's That's how it's got to be done at
- 4:36Speaker 1: all times, and it's a it's a full circle job
- 4:38Speaker 1: and it's really it's really great because I know that
- 4:41Speaker 1: by being socially relevant, it makes your topical. Because if
- 4:44Speaker 1: you're not socially in tune, if you don't have that,
- 4:47Speaker 1: if you're not then influencer, you know, it can it can,
- 4:49Speaker 1: it can cast you lose job opportunities. Nowadays, it really
- 4:52Speaker 1: is a yeah, definitely, that's what uh. I mean that,
- 4:57Speaker 1: like you said, it is one of the leading actors
- 5:00Speaker 1: of how people are booked now. You know, it's interesting
- 5:03Speaker 1: that when it comes to television, it doesn't necessarily they've
- 5:06Speaker 1: learned this recently. It doesn't necessarily those who have you know,
- 5:10Speaker 1: millions of people following them, it doesn't necessarily transfer to
- 5:14Speaker 1: them being a start to to them being a start to.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You know, people when they want to go and pay
- 5:19Speaker 1: thirty forty dollars to sit down somewhere and watch you,
- 5:23Speaker 1: that's a different thing. If you if it's if it's
- 5:25Speaker 1: if it's three to two or three minutes on my phone, Yeah,
- 5:28Speaker 1: I'm a I'm a huge fan. If I gotta sit there,
- 5:31Speaker 1: then that's a different thing. That's when you you know,
- 5:33Speaker 1: you get to George Clooney's and you know, and and
- 5:36Speaker 1: and people who kind of earn their way up. And
- 5:38Speaker 1: you know, you have people do it great, like Kevin
- 5:40Speaker 1: Hard is amazing and you know, build this brand from
- 5:42Speaker 1: that and and and did great from you know, coming
- 5:45Speaker 1: from social media up. But then you have people that
- 5:48Speaker 1: you know that it's hard to survive that way, say
- 5:50Speaker 1: like a Dane Cook, who you know did it for
- 5:53Speaker 1: a long time, and then you gotta and then you
- 5:55Speaker 1: gotta try to maintain with jet back. That's a hard thing,
- 5:58Speaker 1: a harder thing to do after the Dane Cook is
- 6:01Speaker 1: one of the fantastic comedians out of the Northeast that
- 6:04Speaker 1: had a run of movies because he was so popular
- 6:06Speaker 1: with that college audience as a stand up comedian. Now,
- 6:09Speaker 1: do you want to congratulate you the last o g
- 6:12Speaker 1: u the number one comedy in renewed for a second season.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Let's get some applause going that said you come on now, yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 1: but then, but then, but this is I love about
- 6:25Speaker 1: you though. You're the multi stream income guy here. You
- 6:28Speaker 1: know that's being renewed, but you're working on another sitcom.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Did you just shot tell us about that? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 1: just shot a pilot for TVs. Really uh interesting show
- 6:39Speaker 1: did it with one of the writers from Big Bang Theory. Um.
- 6:43Speaker 1: It's um is entitled loosely right now, Welcome to the Neighborhood.
- 6:48Speaker 1: But it's about gentrification. It's work revertedentification is a white
- 6:51Speaker 1: family moves into all black neighborhoods. So this is about
- 6:55Speaker 1: when you know, you know, you start to see the
- 6:57Speaker 1: neighborhoods and be ours and then all of a sudden,
- 6:59Speaker 1: how are starting to get rehabbed? And you look up
- 7:01Speaker 1: and it's it's line line of white people moving in
- 7:04Speaker 1: out of nowhere into the hood. So, uh, you know,
- 7:08Speaker 1: we started to we want to do to look at
- 7:11Speaker 1: races like that. If it is really funny, there's an
- 7:14Speaker 1: interesting show to do, man. So we're excited about the
- 7:16Speaker 1: opportunity that's covered with that too. It's so funny because
- 7:19Speaker 1: you know how I come from my all black neighborhood
- 7:20Speaker 1: Fifth Ward in Houston, Texas, and you know, you always
- 7:23Speaker 1: have one white family in a black neighborhood. And I
- 7:27Speaker 1: laughed because this is like, this is a fluent group
- 7:30Speaker 1: of white people saying, you know something, we don't mind
- 7:33Speaker 1: being in this neighborhood. In fact, we don't mind as
- 7:35Speaker 1: so much. We're gonna push you all out. And I
- 7:37Speaker 1: just see the count man, you know where it's starting
- 7:41Speaker 1: to really happen all over the country. You know, you'll
- 7:43Speaker 1: see that when you know the inner city starting to
- 7:45Speaker 1: end up being you know, back for you look at
- 7:47Speaker 1: Detroit coming back. You look at St. Louis, it's south
- 7:52Speaker 1: sinceral l a. Man, if you go there now, you'll
- 7:54Speaker 1: see people over there with laborn noodles and pre wait
- 7:58Speaker 1: a minute, I thought, no, no, First of all, you're
- 8:02Speaker 1: gonna from the black people being pushed. The Latinams will
- 8:04Speaker 1: come and push them out. Then the white come in
- 8:06Speaker 1: and push them out. It's really interesting because in Houston,
- 8:09Speaker 1: I was just driving around. I was in Houston this
- 8:11Speaker 1: weekend because I still lived there as rather as Atlanta, Georgia,
- 8:14Speaker 1: and I was just driving through the neighborhoods going I
- 8:16Speaker 1: wish I had a Boston property. I wish I had
- 8:18Speaker 1: bought some property because all these high rises of these
- 8:21Speaker 1: stores and and and they will never have been there
- 8:24Speaker 1: fifteen years ago, are now a dominant part of those
- 8:27Speaker 1: communities because guess what they produced, tax dollars and tax dollars.
- 8:31Speaker 1: The reason they redo these communities. And that's why I
- 8:34Speaker 1: really want to do a quick transition and uh, because
- 8:36Speaker 1: I want to keep you for another break cter to
- 8:38Speaker 1: talk about everything. But how important the community is for
- 8:42Speaker 1: you being from St. Louis. You know, when all the
- 8:44Speaker 1: drama was out there, you didn't run from it. You
- 8:47Speaker 1: stayed in the You stayed in the front of it,
- 8:49Speaker 1: keeping the community calm. Why was that so important for
- 8:52Speaker 1: you to do that, etcetera. Well, I mean, you know,
- 8:55Speaker 1: I mean, if the core of it is it's who
- 8:57Speaker 1: I am. I don't you know, I knew I do
- 9:00Speaker 1: entertainment as a job, but you know, I think that
- 9:03Speaker 1: I'm a I'm a person. I'm a black person. I'm
- 9:06Speaker 1: a black man on the one of that father uh
- 9:09Speaker 1: one who is uh you know, believes that I have
- 9:11Speaker 1: something to say or contribute. I'm not a you know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I'm not a person that's out there drumming, you know,
- 9:17Speaker 1: on the bandwagon. At all times. I usually try to
- 9:20Speaker 1: get in and fight the fight where it's really necessary.
- 9:23Speaker 1: So with that, I have a lot of influences with
- 9:25Speaker 1: people the political roles. I understand that the fight has
- 9:29Speaker 1: to be on a bigger levels. I know a lot
- 9:30Speaker 1: of judges, I know, people that know how to get
- 9:33Speaker 1: things done, and so that's usually how I try to
- 9:36Speaker 1: participate in situations with things that go ride. So it's
- 9:40Speaker 1: not about you know, a lot of you know, paths
- 9:42Speaker 1: on the back and getting a lot of acclaim for it.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Uh So, but you know, it's just it's just, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 1: I think being a you know, a dude raised up
- 9:50Speaker 1: with a single mother, being the only male in that household,
- 9:54Speaker 1: I just always had to have that kind of man
- 9:57Speaker 1: type leadership attitude, uh you know, since I was a
- 10:01Speaker 1: young dude. So that's the that's the way I kind
- 10:03Speaker 1: of go about it. So the tour, I gotta I
- 10:06Speaker 1: gotta you, you threw that out man to get down tour.
- 10:10Speaker 1: But look here you you you were part of one
- 10:12Speaker 1: of the all time great the Original Kings of Comedy.
- 10:16Speaker 1: What are your mind felt this was cool to do
- 10:18Speaker 1: this tour, Cedric, I gotta ask you that question. It's
- 10:21Speaker 1: a good question, you know, I mean that was that
- 10:23Speaker 1: was the thing from doing the Original Kings. Of course,
- 10:26Speaker 1: you know, uh, there's a event comedy, was it? You know?
- 10:30Speaker 1: When we showed up in town, it was an end.
- 10:32Speaker 1: It was an event, and so you know, we were,
- 10:34Speaker 1: you know, and after after those years, you know, we
- 10:37Speaker 1: all kind of went back to our individual corners and
- 10:39Speaker 1: everybody started doing their own things, and uh, you know,
- 10:42Speaker 1: which is great, you know, and uh and so you know,
- 10:45Speaker 1: we all had the ability to go and do shows
- 10:47Speaker 1: and do well on our own. But I missed that energy.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I missed that camaraderie. And so when this opportunity came about,
- 10:53Speaker 1: this was all again. George Lopez had called the most
- 10:57Speaker 1: of us together in order to put up a statue
- 10:59Speaker 1: for Richard Pryor, and then you know, it turned into
- 11:01Speaker 1: the tour and so this was this was supposed to
- 11:04Speaker 1: be a one time thing. That's you know again this
- 11:06Speaker 1: class weekend, we celebrated our one hundred show together and so, uh,
- 11:10Speaker 1: you know, it was just really special, man. And we're
- 11:12Speaker 1: still out on the road doing it. We still have
- 11:14Speaker 1: the ability to go individually if we want to. So
- 11:18Speaker 1: it's just the best of both worlds. It's like being
- 11:20Speaker 1: you know, like I said, it's got to be like
- 11:22Speaker 1: when new Addition was out and then you had body ground.
- 11:24Speaker 1: You'll show up and Johnny Geller come by it. Hell
- 11:28Speaker 1: the hell'll be able to go and come and then
- 11:30Speaker 1: there will be all new. Addition, all that wants got
- 11:33Speaker 1: nine groups of one. Well, you know, bet gonna do
- 11:36Speaker 1: a movie about y'all in a minute, you know that, Bet? Yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 1: Hey man, I'm just gonna they're getting on a little
- 11:44Speaker 1: boy with no band airline. He man, I appreciate you
- 11:48Speaker 1: taking the time and allow me to promote your brand. Uh.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I'm a friend brother, you know, I believe in you.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I'm a fan of your, friend of you, and you
- 11:56Speaker 1: know that anything you need always to reach out to me.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I promoted my social media. I know what understand the
- 12:01Speaker 1: value of the social media. But right now, Congratulations don't
- 12:05Speaker 1: be renewed for a second season on Data last o
- 12:08Speaker 1: g on TBS. And also, I'm gonna keep my prayers
- 12:12Speaker 1: out for your new new ship. Comp did you just
- 12:14Speaker 1: take the CBS. I want you to win in all
- 12:16Speaker 1: directions and keep winning, Cedric, I appreciate you, all right, man,
- 12:19Speaker 1: I appreciate Rahan. Bye bye, We'll be right back. More
- 12:29Speaker 1: from Rashan McDonald and Money Making Conversations don't touch that down.

- 12:49Speaker 1: create that product or start selling products, the universe doesn't
- 12:53Speaker 1: have to deal with Money Making Conversations is an innovative

- 13:00Speaker 1: brand Success's good to have a money making conversation with

- 13:25Speaker 1: a degree in mathematics. More importantly, Rashan McDonald will use
- 13:29Speaker 1: his business and celebrity relationships to empower small businesses with
- 13:33Speaker 1: information to succeed. HI. This is Rashan McDonald. I'm here
- 13:39Speaker 1: live Money Making Conversations Live in Atlanta, Georgia. I Heart
- 13:43Speaker 1: Radio podcast, UM series, XM, HBC U Schools. You hear
- 13:48Speaker 1: me live out There were changing lives with information about entrepreneurship,
- 13:52Speaker 1: about entertainment, UH my next guest. He's live in studio,
- 13:56Speaker 1: which is always fantastic. The game of basketball has been very,
- 14:00Speaker 1: very good to. My next guess is the former NBA
- 14:03Speaker 1: All Star. If if I say anything wrong, check me okay,
- 14:06Speaker 1: correct you, okay, World champion with the San Antonio Spurs,
- 14:10Speaker 1: Olympian businessman, broadcaster, philanthropers. After playing fourteen season and the NBA,
- 14:17Speaker 1: he became. You can see him in popular TV commercials,
- 14:20Speaker 1: which I always enjoy him and he looks so relaxed
- 14:23Speaker 1: because I can't actu So whenever I see anybody looking
- 14:25Speaker 1: back relaxed, how we go? What are you doing back?
- 14:29Speaker 1: College basketball? Seeing nightly on NBA TV and something cold suit?
- 14:34Speaker 1: You know, you know how the cold suit on the day,
- 14:35Speaker 1: but he got the cold suit on NBA today, uh TV.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Please welcome to money making conversations. Steve Smith. Appreciate it,
- 14:42Speaker 1: Thank you, thanks for having me. I like that. You
- 14:44Speaker 1: can do that again, absolutely, But you're not a cold
- 14:46Speaker 1: suit on with the little you know, square and everything. So, so,
- 14:50Speaker 1: what is the image of Steve Smith? What is Steve's
- 14:52Speaker 1: the brand? I guess I can say I would say
- 14:54Speaker 1: Steve Smith brand is just being himself, a humble person,
- 14:58Speaker 1: from that voice. He already got there for Wars. He
- 15:00Speaker 1: went into Steve Smith boys, it's just a natural, just natural,
- 15:02Speaker 1: just natural. My friend, just a kid from the east
- 15:05Speaker 1: side of Detroit, got a chance because of that around
- 15:08Speaker 1: basketball you talked about, got a chance to take me
- 15:10Speaker 1: around the world. And obviously for me, um, it's taken
- 15:14Speaker 1: me where. I still haven't had a job. I always
- 15:16Speaker 1: tell people I haven't got a job yet because I'm
- 15:18Speaker 1: doing stuff I love and dreamed to do. So dreamed
- 15:20Speaker 1: of playing in the NBA, and obviously that dream came true.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Never thought and dreamed of being broadcasting. But that was
- 15:26Speaker 1: something I said, that'd be a fun job. And but
- 15:28Speaker 1: how did that? How did that happen? Because you said
- 15:30Speaker 1: you never thought because you athlete correct more than just
- 15:34Speaker 1: an athlete. But I think, Um, at the end of
- 15:36Speaker 1: my career, never thought I'd being broadcasting. I was sitting
- 15:38Speaker 1: at the restaurant and some of alternery executives were there
- 15:40Speaker 1: that I got a chance to meet and be around
- 15:42Speaker 1: because I'm here in the land and played here, and
- 15:44Speaker 1: they said, Steve, would you want to be in broadcasting?
- 15:46Speaker 1: I said, no, no, no, not at all. That's not
- 15:47Speaker 1: for me. I didn't go over to school for that.
- 15:49Speaker 1: They said why not? And that the reason they caught me,
- 15:51Speaker 1: Because they said why not. I didn't have an answer,
- 15:54Speaker 1: so went in and did a demo and obviously they said, uh,
- 15:57Speaker 1: we think you'd be good. Why don't you think about
- 15:59Speaker 1: staying in basketball and covering the Hawks? And I tell people, boy,
- 16:03Speaker 1: coming to Hawks at that time, they couldn't win a game.
- 16:05Speaker 1: You had to come up with stories, you had to
- 16:07Speaker 1: come up with different people had to come on and
- 16:12Speaker 1: just to keep talking about basketball. I think it expanded
- 16:15Speaker 1: me as a broadcast for a team that wasn't doing
- 16:17Speaker 1: well at the time. Okay, So so here's something I
- 16:19Speaker 1: wanted to talk about as education because of my degree
- 16:22Speaker 1: in mathematics. And it took me seven years to get
- 16:24Speaker 1: my degree. Okay, but I thought, I always tell people
- 16:26Speaker 1: that you can't reapop education, and so you went back
- 16:29Speaker 1: and got your degree. My mom a promise. When I
- 16:33Speaker 1: got a chance to go to Michigan State University my
- 16:35Speaker 1: junior year, I had this little thought that I was
- 16:37Speaker 1: gonna come out and my dad and they said, no,
- 16:39Speaker 1: you're not coming out earlier, going all four years and
- 16:42Speaker 1: then obviously when I finished, I only had eleven credits left.
- 16:45Speaker 1: When you know, you started procrasting, I'm gonna do that
- 16:47Speaker 1: in the summer. Summer started to go on. But my
- 16:50Speaker 1: mom eventually, you know, in my rookie year past, and
- 16:53Speaker 1: I always had that voice in my mind, you're going
- 16:55Speaker 1: back getting your degree. And so then after the time
- 16:59Speaker 1: it would really hit me was when my kids said, Dad,
- 17:02Speaker 1: you don't have your degree. Because I say, hey, you're
- 17:04Speaker 1: going to college getting your dree. They said, you don't
- 17:05Speaker 1: have your degree. So that was the kicking my butt
- 17:07Speaker 1: to make me go back. And you can't talking nor
- 17:09Speaker 1: is if you're not applying it yourself. And I say,
- 17:12Speaker 1: the hardest thing just having leven credits left. It seemed
- 17:15Speaker 1: like that was nothing. When I first left, I go
- 17:16Speaker 1: back and do it. After years, kept going and going.
- 17:19Speaker 1: You always made excuse. But after the kids, in that
- 17:21Speaker 1: little voice, my mom made me go back. Well, it's
- 17:23Speaker 1: important to do. You know the reason I like it
- 17:25Speaker 1: because that means your goal. Person, the goals are important
- 17:28Speaker 1: to you. It's important you in athletics, and then in
- 17:31Speaker 1: this part it's important you in life. Because of the
- 17:33Speaker 1: fact that I would tell me, if you set a goal,
- 17:34Speaker 1: you can actually you know, you can actually hold people accountable.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And so once you got that degree, you can start
- 17:40Speaker 1: holding your kids accountable for sure. I mean I could
- 17:43Speaker 1: stick my chest out and so you have to. But
- 17:46Speaker 1: I would say more than just that degree, just having
- 17:48Speaker 1: that experience being on that college campus, and UM, I
- 17:51Speaker 1: tell you, I'll take that into the next segment. That
- 17:53Speaker 1: was the reason why I started my Steve Smith Scholarship Fund.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I was talking about we're talking about we're talking about
- 17:59Speaker 1: I'm back home, speaking obviously about basketball to the entire
- 18:03Speaker 1: high school, my high school person high school, and a
- 18:05Speaker 1: young lady stood up and said, Steve, you know, I
- 18:08Speaker 1: want to go to college. I don't have enough funds
- 18:11Speaker 1: and money and financially means to go to college. I
- 18:13Speaker 1: did everything everybody told me to do. I'm a four
- 18:16Speaker 1: point those students. I only miss class two or three
- 18:18Speaker 1: times in my entire school, and uh, I don't have
- 18:21Speaker 1: enough money to go to school, and how can I
- 18:23Speaker 1: go without athletics? And that's when it started to me
- 18:25Speaker 1: I needed to help and do something to have kids
- 18:27Speaker 1: from my high school, my community. But the first thing,
- 18:29Speaker 1: reaching your own personal pockets, Yeah you did. I had
- 18:32Speaker 1: to write, so what what triggered that? Next step, you know,
- 18:35Speaker 1: it's getting other people involved and getting them involved in
- 18:37Speaker 1: the point of today, I can't do this by myself.
- 18:40Speaker 1: What pushed that? What that opportunity in your mind? I
- 18:43Speaker 1: think anything, you know, this is being successful. You're not
- 18:45Speaker 1: gonna ever do it alone. I think for me, it
- 18:47Speaker 1: was my you know, I call it team Smith, my parents,
- 18:50Speaker 1: you know, my mom's voice even though she's passed, my dad,
- 18:53Speaker 1: my parents, my wife, my community, understanding that this is
- 18:57Speaker 1: something I wanted to do. And then obviously reaching in
- 18:59Speaker 1: that that pocket is uh, it was I got that
- 19:04Speaker 1: look for my wife. You you're about to donate how
- 19:06Speaker 1: much two point five million dollars? Said why? And after
- 19:10Speaker 1: you explain why, it all makes sense. And for me
- 19:12Speaker 1: it was something I wanted to do. And like I said,
- 19:15Speaker 1: always had that voice with my mom in my head.
- 19:16Speaker 1: And that's and so how I has basketball being uh,
- 19:20Speaker 1: because the beauty about you is superstar in college, we
- 19:23Speaker 1: gotta say that, uh, superstar. You don't be the All
- 19:26Speaker 1: Star and not being a superstar and the NBA Olympian,
- 19:29Speaker 1: that's you know, that's rare opportunity right there. How has
- 19:33Speaker 1: that helped you in life? Being that successful? And then
- 19:36Speaker 1: and then, like you said, somebody approached you by being
- 19:39Speaker 1: uh now, so you went old, that's not me. And
- 19:42Speaker 1: so now you're so successful in this world. How's that happening?
- 19:46Speaker 1: You know? I think he goes back, Um, you know
- 19:48Speaker 1: their voices from my mom. But then on the other side,
- 19:51Speaker 1: as my dad thirty seven years, he drove the city
- 19:53Speaker 1: city of Detroit bus hard work, watching me get up
- 19:57Speaker 1: at four o'clock in the morning, coming back at nine
- 19:58Speaker 1: o'clock at night. You drove the bus with thirty seven years.
- 20:01Speaker 1: So I made him retire just hard work. And I
- 20:04Speaker 1: think whenever you put your mind to someone, you start
- 20:06Speaker 1: to put in your stamp where you're gonna go in,
- 20:08Speaker 1: and you gotta put in more work than anybody else
- 20:10Speaker 1: to be successful. And I think you never measure yourself
- 20:13Speaker 1: on I want to be better than you. I want
- 20:14Speaker 1: to be better than you. You want to be the
- 20:16Speaker 1: best version of yourself by putting in hard work. Okay,
- 20:18Speaker 1: Steve Smith the personality that that's the person that I
- 20:21Speaker 1: see on TV these commercials. You seem so see I'm
- 20:25Speaker 1: just gonna get into Steves. See, you're the guy keeps saying,
- 20:27Speaker 1: you know, I just want to play basketball. I just wanted.
- 20:29Speaker 1: But you're so natural, Steve. I'm mad at you because
- 20:32Speaker 1: you can do so many good things that are natural.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Why why you know that's don't worry about that. Don't
- 20:40Speaker 1: worry about they can't do everything. Don't there. But I
- 20:44Speaker 1: can't act though, but I didn't stopped me from making money,
- 20:47Speaker 1: So you're natural. Talking about that whole process, because I'm
- 20:50Speaker 1: sure when people approach you by commercials, it was a
- 20:53Speaker 1: doubt in your head. People approach you about being on
- 20:56Speaker 1: TV at the national of covering college back, skitball, sideline reporting,
- 21:01Speaker 1: there were always doubts, and I always trying to use
- 21:04Speaker 1: this show to break through those doubts, break through those
- 21:07Speaker 1: those moments where you are afraid, but you broke through.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Why you gotta try. I mean, that's the one thing
- 21:13Speaker 1: is you're not gonna succeed unless you try. And I
- 21:15Speaker 1: think always it's a wisdom going out there and talking
- 21:18Speaker 1: to people. Always say tell kids, seek wisdom, seek people
- 21:21Speaker 1: like yourself to get a chance to been there before
- 21:22Speaker 1: you ask people, ask questions. And I think more importantly
- 21:26Speaker 1: is when you define yourself. It's hard to mess up
- 21:29Speaker 1: being you if you just be yourself, whether it's good
- 21:31Speaker 1: or bad, as smiles as eyes. It's always gonna be
- 21:33Speaker 1: true to you. So I always, I guess probably myself
- 21:36Speaker 1: on being me. Well, the cool thing about it is
- 21:38Speaker 1: that and I guess the cool that that that the
- 21:41Speaker 1: I guess the all the part that you were playing
- 21:43Speaker 1: it out on a large stage. You know, I guess
- 21:46Speaker 1: you could say, you know when you were doing it
- 21:47Speaker 1: for the Hawks when nobody watching, because it was so
- 21:51Speaker 1: that was good, good good, good training ground, great training ground.
- 21:54Speaker 1: But when you when when when the stage kept getting
- 21:56Speaker 1: bigger and having an opinion because you know, as an
- 21:58Speaker 1: analyst you have to have no you have to meet
- 22:00Speaker 1: these same players. You have the couch. You know, you
- 22:03Speaker 1: have to be relevant because you know, as as a fan,
- 22:05Speaker 1: we can see through a's saying nothing right. So so
- 22:08Speaker 1: as as an analyst, how do you gauge that maintaining
- 22:11Speaker 1: I got to tell the truth but also maintained the
- 22:13Speaker 1: relationship or doesn't matter? It does matter? I think first
- 22:16Speaker 1: of all, is I just love the game of basketball
- 22:19Speaker 1: since three or four years old, was always I've always
- 22:22Speaker 1: had a ball in my hand. Then I think I'm
- 22:24Speaker 1: gonna watch it at the high school level, I'm gonna
- 22:26Speaker 1: play it. I'm gonna coaching, and it doesn't have anything
- 22:28Speaker 1: to do with finances. I would have played this game
- 22:30Speaker 1: just because the love of it. I think the next
- 22:32Speaker 1: part about it is I'm always around it. I've been
- 22:35Speaker 1: around a U, I've been around kids. I keep in
- 22:38Speaker 1: touch with all my friends and faunily around the country
- 22:40Speaker 1: about kids in this game of basketball. And so for
- 22:43Speaker 1: me to get a chance to be on TV, I'm
- 22:45Speaker 1: just naturally talking like we would be talking we were
- 22:46Speaker 1: at home. Some of those words that you can't say
- 22:49Speaker 1: on their keeping keeping a lot of the pepper, I
- 22:52Speaker 1: keep it all and I just think, you know, being
- 22:56Speaker 1: able to break down the game from my eyes from
- 22:58Speaker 1: a guy that's seen it in so many different ways,
- 23:00Speaker 1: and obviously each year you get more experience, it helps.
- 23:02Speaker 1: And also staying relevant. You gotta talk to the young
- 23:04Speaker 1: group about the game of basketball. Then obviously going to
- 23:07Speaker 1: guys like George Gerband, Spencer Haywood, guys that taught me
- 23:11Speaker 1: the game from the city of Trading, the state of Michigan.
- 23:13Speaker 1: You keep those two together and you're somewhere in the middle.
- 23:16Speaker 1: You always got to talk to older guys who've done
- 23:17Speaker 1: it because they have their vision. And then my youngsters.
- 23:20Speaker 1: The youngsters telling me about the crossovers and different things
- 23:23Speaker 1: real estate. Tell us how you got started, how you
- 23:25Speaker 1: got started in there? Well, my guys, when I left
- 23:28Speaker 1: Michigan State, I was UH standing apartment uh and the
- 23:33Speaker 1: management companies called DTM Management, And then my business guys
- 23:37Speaker 1: always told me that there's a few things that you know.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Obviously it's not going anywhere. You've never seen pretty much
- 23:43Speaker 1: a university closed down. You ever seen casinos closed down
- 23:46Speaker 1: or hospitals? So put your money? Which one would you
- 23:49Speaker 1: want to do? Steve? And I said university. That makes
- 23:51Speaker 1: more sense to me. Your brand when you look at it,
- 23:56Speaker 1: there's always a kid wants to have his wants to
- 23:58Speaker 1: be at a university. They're all from Michigan State is
- 24:00Speaker 1: fifty some thousand. It's gonna go to forty eight, but
- 24:03Speaker 1: it's gonna be within forty eight to fifty two thousand
- 24:06Speaker 1: since I've been around. And if you can have real
- 24:09Speaker 1: estate around a university or hospital or a casino, those
- 24:14Speaker 1: industries are pretty much not going anywhere. So I bought
- 24:16Speaker 1: my one unit right thirty three thousand in n and
- 24:20Speaker 1: ever since then, I've been blind box of a hundred
- 24:22Speaker 1: units now every since then and you know, we've we've
- 24:25Speaker 1: done pretty good and it's still going. So so you
- 24:27Speaker 1: have a management company that handles that, the DT in
- 24:29Speaker 1: management and that's how that's how it works. So that's
- 24:32Speaker 1: how you're you're for raid, that's all. So you're making
- 24:34Speaker 1: money while you sleep. That's that's what I want to do.
- 24:37Speaker 1: So anyway, so you into the multiple streams of income
- 24:40Speaker 1: while sleeping, I want to work too hard. That's another job.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I want to keep. These jobs were The beauty of
- 24:46Speaker 1: what I was telling people is that you know, when
- 24:48Speaker 1: you when you show up for a basketball game or
- 24:50Speaker 1: you're shore for an end of you that's called working wealthy.
- 24:53Speaker 1: You know, the wealth you're trying to get. This what
- 24:55Speaker 1: you're talking about with this real estate or anything that
- 24:57Speaker 1: you have about to always tell people that that multiple
- 24:59Speaker 1: stream of income makes you sleep comfortably and also tells
- 25:02Speaker 1: you you can say no yes comfortably and say I
- 25:05Speaker 1: don't feel like doing that comfortable. It was my time.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I love my time, your time, and you can't. You
- 25:11Speaker 1: haven't used it on your golf game. I don't think
- 25:13Speaker 1: you said that, so I don't. So why are you
- 25:15Speaker 1: spending your time up here? Because I reasonally asked that
- 25:17Speaker 1: is that what's the next stage in life for a successful,
- 25:20Speaker 1: a good looking guy. I appreciate that made some glasses,
- 25:23Speaker 1: but I cast people for a living. Okay, So where
- 25:27Speaker 1: you go? People approached you about hosting shows or producing, uh,
- 25:33Speaker 1: you know any type of mediums today or you want
- 25:35Speaker 1: to go with your brain? You know what I haven't.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I'm sure people would. I just haven't opened that door
- 25:40Speaker 1: to him. I think for me is I've had that
- 25:42Speaker 1: door closed to a lot of different absolutes just because
- 25:44Speaker 1: my focus has been my kids. Focus has been my
- 25:47Speaker 1: family right, and like you said, I've been comfortable, so
- 25:50Speaker 1: I've been able to I wouldn't say say no, I
- 25:52Speaker 1: haven't been out there searching and reaching and then the
- 25:55Speaker 1: money doesn't drive me. That's one thing is I signed
- 25:58Speaker 1: my first rebound contract was more than what my dad made. Absolutely,
- 26:02Speaker 1: and I'm not measuring myself to my dad. But I
- 26:03Speaker 1: always said, never chase it, Never chase it organically, let
- 26:07Speaker 1: it come and obviously put in hard work. And that's
- 26:09Speaker 1: what it's happening with your whole life. That's why you
- 26:10Speaker 1: look so comfortable. Next for me, though, entrepreneur, I want
- 26:13Speaker 1: to get more real estate for me and also kids
- 26:16Speaker 1: who want to do camps all over the country for
- 26:18Speaker 1: kids and obviously UM provide some where. Can you say
- 26:21Speaker 1: camps all over the country that basketball camps, whether it's
- 26:25Speaker 1: education camps, love reading one of them, definitely. I want
- 26:28Speaker 1: to have one of those large book clubs where everybody understand. Kids,
- 26:31Speaker 1: if you can read, you almost can read yourself out
- 26:34Speaker 1: of poverty. You can read yourself out of problems. And
- 26:36Speaker 1: that's why I think Pete kids can do well. You
- 26:38Speaker 1: know something, Are those in all those still in the
- 26:41Speaker 1: planning stages? Are you always in the planning stages? Okay,
- 26:44Speaker 1: we gotta moving from planning to action. There you go,
- 26:47Speaker 1: you got the goals you've never been Let them tell
- 26:49Speaker 1: you someone. When you're sitting next to a successful person, Steve,
- 26:52Speaker 1: you realize that that's what they're gonna do. Surrounding yourself
- 26:55Speaker 1: with the right people that will create that at the
- 26:57Speaker 1: next step. Because you've said that constantly that you've never
- 26:59Speaker 1: done any think about yourself, never and that's so moving
- 27:02Speaker 1: forward to shooting, you know, shout the best ball. Yeah,
- 27:05Speaker 1: from from the baseline, from the corner, Yeah, from the
- 27:07Speaker 1: from the elbow. You're very good man. I want to
- 27:10Speaker 1: thank you Steve Spith for coming on my show. I
- 27:12Speaker 1: just said, just sharing your story, I appreciate you amazing. Well,
- 27:17Speaker 1: you know, you're amazing guy. And uh, I think that
- 27:19Speaker 1: when people see this side of you, it's a big
- 27:22Speaker 1: blessing for them because they need to know that there's
- 27:24Speaker 1: an evolution and in the athletes life and their evolutions
- 27:28Speaker 1: are now affecting people in a positive way. And I
- 27:30Speaker 1: thought in the story about your son being in your
- 27:33Speaker 1: his grandmother's building, that's um, I'm gonna take that with
- 27:37Speaker 1: me a long time. Thank you, sir, Thank you, thank you.
- 27:42Speaker 1: We're right back more money making conversations. Hi, this Rashwan
- 28:03Speaker 1: McDonald of laughing because he's on the phone and he's
- 28:07Speaker 1: been driving me nuts because he knows I know him.
- 28:10Speaker 1: He's my fraternity brother. You're listening to money making Conversations.
- 28:13Speaker 1: He's a nationally syndicated radio host, a reality TV star,
- 28:17Speaker 1: a TV personality, an incredible stand up comedian and author
- 28:21Speaker 1: book drop last October from Simon and Schuster, actor and businessman.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Please work with the money making conversation. Ricky Smiley, Hey, Hey,
- 28:31Speaker 1: resn also do landscape like real PLoP? No no no, no,
- 28:37Speaker 1: no no, no, I know you can bobecue. I know
- 28:39Speaker 1: you can bobecue. Now, I know you can bobecue. What's
- 28:42Speaker 1: your landscaping? Me and my granddad that used to have
- 28:44Speaker 1: a landscaping business. I still do it on the slide
- 28:46Speaker 1: because I slipped houses. So I go in and get
- 28:48Speaker 1: the property main so I keep properties, maintain that our own.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Uh huh. So you're flipping houses and you're don't landscaping. Yeah, Rash,
- 28:57Speaker 1: I just put out some scotts I just put out
- 28:59Speaker 1: some scott weed and feed. We need to feed this morning.
- 29:04Speaker 1: He knows. He tell us the truth. He tells the truth.
- 29:07Speaker 1: So so so if I'm if I'm named, if I'm
- 29:10Speaker 1: in the movement, come keep me, keep run there with
- 29:13Speaker 1: the funds I'm doing. I'm doing. I'm doing landscaping right
- 29:16Speaker 1: now while I'm doing it. Mess of Alash. I I
- 29:21Speaker 1: would go to a house, I would, I would sit
- 29:23Speaker 1: up there and I get it. I get that work in. Man,
- 29:27Speaker 1: I believe in landscaping. The thing about it is, I
- 29:29Speaker 1: don't care how big a celebrity you are. You're still
- 29:32Speaker 1: a man. I still fixed cars, I still cut grands.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I still kill me. You know, cars you're fixing, no
- 29:39Speaker 1: Rickie smiling that anything American maid rasch. I don't know
- 29:44Speaker 1: how to fix uh yet. Uh I can fix anything, American.
- 29:48Speaker 1: May I know how to pull h put an alternator off?
- 29:55Speaker 1: I started votage regulator, you know, all of that little
- 29:58Speaker 1: tow stuff. But what I can't do. I can't cool
- 30:00Speaker 1: a transmission color. I don't have to that transmission. That's
- 30:03Speaker 1: a real job there. See. I can do the starter,
- 30:06Speaker 1: you can do the radiator, you can do the battery.
- 30:08Speaker 1: The battery. I'm I'm, I'm a whole battery for I
- 30:12Speaker 1: can do it like I can do it like it
- 30:14Speaker 1: ain't nothing. Yeah, so so so so that's so. That's
- 30:19Speaker 1: what I should add that to your intro or anybody
- 30:21Speaker 1: should add that to intro landscaping, to the intro now
- 30:24Speaker 1: land escaping. And I don't know what you call people
- 30:26Speaker 1: that slip houses houses, that's what you call them, house flippers,
- 30:30Speaker 1: house flippers. House. Okay, let's talk about And I don't
- 30:35Speaker 1: slip on the set and set them up for session.
- 30:37Speaker 1: They I get people that's gonna pay some real rent,
- 30:40Speaker 1: real rent, real money, real real money. You don't have
- 30:44Speaker 1: to go find them. They don't have that sad story
- 30:47Speaker 1: because you know, they know you're on TV, they know
- 30:49Speaker 1: you're on the radio, so they're doing They're gonna have
- 30:51Speaker 1: a sad story for you. Look at how I'm doing.
- 30:53Speaker 1: So you you have to worry about that. You'll get
- 30:55Speaker 1: the people with the money so they won't have to
- 30:57Speaker 1: worry about that saster. I'm wanting, not Ricky. I'm not
- 31:00Speaker 1: running from you. I'm not running back. So is that
- 31:02Speaker 1: another teeth of money? Right? Is that another team? You
- 31:05Speaker 1: get them right out of medical school? You know how's
- 31:08Speaker 1: already got furniture in it, already decorating, and you get
- 31:12Speaker 1: the stuff and you you left that. They walk in
- 31:14Speaker 1: the house and the only thing they have to do
- 31:16Speaker 1: is by their clothes. Their parents got money, they write
- 31:18Speaker 1: your big check and they move in and you're happy,
- 31:21Speaker 1: and you're very happy. I am happy to day. Has
- 31:24Speaker 1: been a good two days. Man. I used the weed either,
- 31:28Speaker 1: I used the line more. I put on some scott
- 31:30Speaker 1: weed and feed got my spreader, I got the sprinklers
- 31:33Speaker 1: out and stuff to make sure. You know, uh that
- 31:36Speaker 1: that fertile lines to get into that grass to kill
- 31:38Speaker 1: that craft grass. But uh, I got bermuda grass. I
- 31:42Speaker 1: got fescue grass. I got sixty four grass in some
- 31:46Speaker 1: of the yards. So seeing the hide and all of
- 31:49Speaker 1: that stuff. Well, you know the thing about it is
- 31:52Speaker 1: that I cannot argue with you because I do the
- 31:55Speaker 1: same thing you said everything you know, I'm looking for
- 31:58Speaker 1: I'm looking for you to slip up. You know what
- 31:59Speaker 1: I'm saying. But he didn't slip up at all, because
- 32:02Speaker 1: you know you do. Do you do your weeding feed
- 32:03Speaker 1: between February and May. That's when you do your weeding
- 32:07Speaker 1: feed because you're gonna come back and later all with
- 32:09Speaker 1: the fool with the fool, so you can you can
- 32:11Speaker 1: build that that that that good green look. But you
- 32:13Speaker 1: gotta get rid of the weeds here, get rid. Now
- 32:16Speaker 1: do you drop down in the ant killer? Do you
- 32:18Speaker 1: put in the ant killer out there for those fire ants?
- 32:21Speaker 1: I mix it in with the weed and feed country.
- 32:26Speaker 1: He's straight country man, straight count And your point, your point,
- 32:32Speaker 1: a man, I'm a Houston, Texas board talk to a
- 32:34Speaker 1: Burminham boy to Southern boards. I can I can't argue
- 32:37Speaker 1: no more about you don't know what you're doing. Remember
- 32:39Speaker 1: earlier I said really landscaping, really, but when you talk
- 32:43Speaker 1: about you mixing fine at killer and we eat and
- 32:45Speaker 1: feed together and rolling out there? Whoa brother? You don't
- 32:49Speaker 1: point with your game? So Rick, how you how you're
- 32:52Speaker 1: trying to do all this extra stuff. Let's talk about
- 32:54Speaker 1: that morning show before we get the dish nation, before
- 32:56Speaker 1: we get to the tour this morning show man, I
- 32:59Speaker 1: just want to I want to back back a little
- 33:01Speaker 1: bit about You're a funny guy. You're known for for
- 33:05Speaker 1: incredible characters. You're humanitarian, but you're really a social activist.
- 33:11Speaker 1: And that's a major, a major desire for people to
- 33:15Speaker 1: understand that you care and you will put the side
- 33:18Speaker 1: a step aside, step pass a joke to make people
- 33:21Speaker 1: understand that we have to take this serious. Why is
- 33:23Speaker 1: that so important? You rickey smiling? Well, you don't want
- 33:27Speaker 1: people walking up to you? Do you live down? Make
- 33:30Speaker 1: me land? People ain't gonna have no respect for you
- 33:33Speaker 1: as a president if you don't stand for something. And
- 33:35Speaker 1: people don't celebrate Mohammed I leave because he knocked that beat,
- 33:39Speaker 1: Joe Frasier. People celebrate Mohammad. I leave because the way
- 33:42Speaker 1: he stood for Mohammad. I leave. Put it all on
- 33:45Speaker 1: the line when you make I don't care how much
- 33:47Speaker 1: money you make. I don't care how successful you are.
- 33:50Speaker 1: If you don't stand for something, what what what what
- 33:54Speaker 1: if if if you if if you ain't women to
- 33:58Speaker 1: die for something, you're not fit to live right right right?
- 34:01Speaker 1: And that's what But would you say that with passion? Though?
- 34:04Speaker 1: You know that I say that. It's not a it's
- 34:07Speaker 1: not something you're saying that just in the Cavalier. And
- 34:09Speaker 1: I've always known that about you because because you know,
- 34:13Speaker 1: because you you are really you know, like I said,
- 34:16Speaker 1: God has blessed us all because we're talking right here
- 34:18Speaker 1: on the phone, on the phone, on the radio podcast,
- 34:21Speaker 1: all series x M, all these formats. But the thing
- 34:24Speaker 1: about it is that it's more important that you understand
- 34:26Speaker 1: that you have a strong community involvement, and there is
- 34:29Speaker 1: the joke is not bigger than than the community and
- 34:33Speaker 1: and and delivering the right message. And that's that's consistent
- 34:36Speaker 1: with you want was that? I mean, I mean, sure,
- 34:40Speaker 1: you know God has been good that you God give
- 34:42Speaker 1: your responsibility, sir. You know, uh reached one teach one man.
- 34:46Speaker 1: You gotta get out of here. You know how to
- 34:48Speaker 1: help people. You got you a nice house, you got
- 34:51Speaker 1: you a couple of cars. So it ain't about you.
- 34:55Speaker 1: In my book, I talked about. You know, when my
- 34:56Speaker 1: grandmoma died, they left the cemetery and got on plane
- 35:00Speaker 1: and when and did the show that night. I did
- 35:02Speaker 1: a show with the same suit with tears and snot
- 35:06Speaker 1: in it that that I wore to my grandmama's funeral.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Because gifts Worth Sean, their grandmama died too, and their
- 35:13Speaker 1: mama died, and their daddy died, and their kids died,
- 35:17Speaker 1: and they got cancer, and they got Luke Kenyan, who
- 35:21Speaker 1: are you the counselor show as much as give as
- 35:23Speaker 1: much as required. You gotta go out here and do
- 35:26Speaker 1: God's well. You know what I do on my birthday.
- 35:28Speaker 1: I don't walk around all months with money tent to
- 35:31Speaker 1: me thinking everybody's to stop and turned back with somersaults
- 35:35Speaker 1: for my little stinking birthday. You know what I do
- 35:37Speaker 1: on my birthday every sun. The lady that gave birth
- 35:40Speaker 1: to me, I go pick her up, and we go
- 35:43Speaker 1: to the Salvation Army and we put on aprons, and
- 35:46Speaker 1: I'm buy a birthday cake and cut it up and
- 35:48Speaker 1: feed it to the homeless and have my birthday every
- 35:51Speaker 1: year with the homeless. Because Jesus Christ said, what about
- 35:55Speaker 1: the least of these? You understand what I'm saying, that's
- 36:00Speaker 1: that's what it's all about, you know, because in this
- 36:03Speaker 1: year now, that's important. I just don't want to say
- 36:06Speaker 1: that that I've never heard that story and I'm saying
- 36:08Speaker 1: it's not true because of the fact that you're not
- 36:10Speaker 1: trying to publicize that story. Correct. You know, it's about
- 36:13Speaker 1: it's a personal thing that you realize that it's kind
- 36:17Speaker 1: of like humanizes you. You know, it brings you back
- 36:20Speaker 1: to reality that where you could be if things didn't
- 36:23Speaker 1: go right in your life. Right right right, I'm telling you, man,
- 36:29Speaker 1: you know you look and you see people suffer. Man,
- 36:31Speaker 1: God give you a spirit of discernment as a comedian,
- 36:34Speaker 1: because when you walk up on stage and you're looking
- 36:37Speaker 1: at them, people in the eyes, and people in the
- 36:39Speaker 1: work they asked on to put together fifty dollars to
- 36:42Speaker 1: come see you perform. You look at their shoes, they
- 36:45Speaker 1: jury they close. You can look at their eyes and
- 36:47Speaker 1: tell that they were to run away, that they're sick,
- 36:50Speaker 1: you know, the hair coming out because they got cancer.
- 36:52Speaker 1: And you point them out and you're tell them to
- 36:54Speaker 1: come to the funding the stage and you tell them
- 36:56Speaker 1: to come backstage. I can't even tell you how many
- 36:59Speaker 1: bit your areas all over the country where my pictures
- 37:02Speaker 1: inside there. Bitture Wind took a picture with the loved
- 37:04Speaker 1: one because God let me see it. He let me
- 37:08Speaker 1: love on them people. And the people be like, wow,
- 37:10Speaker 1: and here you are. And I'm gonna do this. Man,
- 37:13Speaker 1: I'm not gonna cry. I'm not gonna cry. I got
- 37:16Speaker 1: on playing. I think about miss Mary Anne and and
- 37:19Speaker 1: MMR James, you know, and Miss Andrews, all these people
- 37:22Speaker 1: that inter wrote me who got dancer. I went on
- 37:24Speaker 1: the plane and walked in their living room and how happy.
- 37:27Speaker 1: And they're excited that they was now here, gonna here.
- 37:30Speaker 1: I am wake up and do a morning show. I
- 37:32Speaker 1: get the perform in front of millions every morning, and
- 37:34Speaker 1: then here go these other folks wake up every day
- 37:37Speaker 1: facing death and and and and I have a responsibility
- 37:42Speaker 1: to go see about him, even if I go and
- 37:45Speaker 1: take pictures. I went and hugo hood that man. That
- 37:48Speaker 1: man gripped me up and stood up with one leg
- 37:53Speaker 1: to take a picture with me. I said, I said,
- 37:55Speaker 1: you're gonna stand up? He said, man, he said something
- 37:57Speaker 1: to take stand up and take this picture to you,
- 37:59Speaker 1: because I can't glee to you in my different room.
- 38:02Speaker 1: So that's like for mad that's what's making wishes come true. Man, man,
- 38:08Speaker 1: you know, And in two weeks he was gone, you know,
- 38:11Speaker 1: Reverend Reverend pars he's going, man. And and and he
- 38:15Speaker 1: taught school and and then helped people and and did
- 38:19Speaker 1: all these wonderful things and stuff for people. And then
- 38:22Speaker 1: he got cancer. You know, we buried him last week,
- 38:25Speaker 1: but just able to make people smile. And we bought
- 38:27Speaker 1: him a church man. We fixed up his stellarship, halling
- 38:30Speaker 1: in his church and stuff. You know, man, that's why
- 38:33Speaker 1: I used the brand in order to do good. You understand,
- 38:38Speaker 1: I could have been been by the bigger the star
- 38:41Speaker 1: if I wouldn't went to l A and pursuit it.
- 38:46Speaker 1: You're a big star. Now there's two tours are coming
- 38:48Speaker 1: up which I've never heard of my life. A talent
- 38:51Speaker 1: as big as you been on two significant uh tours,
- 38:55Speaker 1: one with Martin Lawrence and one with Mike Epps. Um okay,
- 39:02Speaker 1: now let's just break down the date so people can
- 39:04Speaker 1: know you can go to the the ticket match or March third,
- 39:06Speaker 1: here be in St. Louis. May, I mean May May third,
- 39:09Speaker 1: he'd be in St. Louis. May tenth, here be in
- 39:11Speaker 1: Tampa May twenty six. I gotta come see you because
- 39:13Speaker 1: you've been in Houston, Texas. Made June eighth, you made
- 39:16Speaker 1: Chicago June nine, a Capital One Center. That's in Washington,
- 39:21Speaker 1: d C. That's the Martin Lawrence Tour. That's the Martin
- 39:23Speaker 1: Lawrence Tour. In June fifteenth at the Bridge Stone in Nashville,
- 39:27Speaker 1: that's the Martin Lawrence Tour. And you know, we're gonna
- 39:29Speaker 1: tell you who's all on the tour. The next tour
- 39:32Speaker 1: is the Mike Epps Platinum Comedy Tour. That's made four.
- 39:36Speaker 1: That's in uh, Mississippi, that wire just right outside of Memphis.
- 39:39Speaker 1: And then that's that's May Feel. He's in Dallas, Texas,
- 39:42Speaker 1: you know, at the Verizons and everybody know what that's at.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And then made thirte he's in Steve Harvey's hometown of
- 39:48Speaker 1: cleaveand Ohio. Okay, now that means you're busy. That means
- 39:53Speaker 1: you you're gonna be able to put some kids through college.
- 39:55Speaker 1: You can do some landscaping, you can do some more
- 39:57Speaker 1: flipping houses, you can do all that stuff. Who on
- 40:00Speaker 1: the show with you? Who's what fools are sharing the
- 40:03Speaker 1: stay with you? I know Tony Rock. I heard he's
- 40:05Speaker 1: out there with you, d Ray Oh yeah. Uh Michael
- 40:11Speaker 1: Blackston black a blackster. Yeah? Is he still is he
- 40:18Speaker 1: still showing his butt? No, he stayed dressed. Okay, but
- 40:24Speaker 1: but he's funny. But they all are on the tour, man,
- 40:28Speaker 1: are they all giving? Uh? And the tour is absolutely hilarious.
- 40:35Speaker 1: And when I tell you we're have a good time,
- 40:37Speaker 1: we have a good time now to be on this too,
- 40:39Speaker 1: because it's like, you know, because you know, you have
- 40:41Speaker 1: a certain energy. We're talking about the energy of Martin
- 40:44Speaker 1: Lawrence energy and then you have Mike's energy is more
- 40:47Speaker 1: lying I think with your energy. Is the difference is
- 40:54Speaker 1: that Martin Lawrence to it like personally as a comedian
- 40:58Speaker 1: is really really laid back and professional. It's just it's professional,
- 41:05Speaker 1: and it's like, you know, you want to tour with
- 41:07Speaker 1: Martin Lawrence. With Mike is a little bit more laid
- 41:10Speaker 1: back because it's Mike, you know, and uh you know,
- 41:15Speaker 1: so that that's the difference, you know. But but with
- 41:19Speaker 1: Mark Lawrence tool, you know, you get butterflies in your
- 41:22Speaker 1: stomic and you want to do everything right because you're
- 41:24Speaker 1: working with a comedic icon. Yes sir, Yes, sir, Yes, sir,
- 41:29Speaker 1: it's real. I can are you working with a Richard Brown,
- 41:33Speaker 1: Flip Wilson, Eddie Murphy, it's Martin Lawrence. So you have
- 41:37Speaker 1: that opportunity to do that tour with him, so you
- 41:40Speaker 1: try to do everything right. That's that's that's the that's
- 41:43Speaker 1: the only that. That's the first time in twenty years
- 41:46Speaker 1: that I lost sleep over a comedy show. My man,
- 41:51Speaker 1: and you make me happy because your but I love you, man.
- 41:58Speaker 1: I gotta say that to the world, and I hope
- 42:00Speaker 1: everybody understand that you're beyond the jokes. And that's another time.
- 42:03Speaker 1: I want you to do an uncensored I want you're
- 42:05Speaker 1: doing uncensored man on TV one. I want the people
- 42:08Speaker 1: to hear you. I'm gonna call him and say, hey,
- 42:12Speaker 1: you need to do an uncensored man on TV one.
- 42:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna called d'angelo's and tell her make sure we
- 42:18Speaker 1: get Rickey smiling an uncensored in eighteen. Okay, keep winning, brother,
- 42:24Speaker 1: Thank you for let me be on your show. Thank
- 42:25Speaker 1: you for the opportunity. You're the best man. We owe

- 44:36Speaker 1: her Twitter count is miss Patty Patty please welcome the
- 44:40Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations, Miss Patti La Belle. Girl, you are
- 44:49Speaker 1: a brand. You are a brand, and I had to
- 44:52Speaker 1: put it out there everybody to know. You know, you
- 44:54Speaker 1: didn't control of your name, you know, because some people
- 44:56Speaker 1: that go, I am the real I am this the
- 45:00Speaker 1: one and only. No, no, no no, I missed Patty
- 45:04Speaker 1: one night only. That's who I am. And that's that's
- 45:08Speaker 1: that's that's a great uh. Congratulations and all your success
- 45:12Speaker 1: being an entrepreneur. But I want before we get into
- 45:15Speaker 1: that part, I want to talk about you being on
- 45:17Speaker 1: VICH one's Mother's Day Special, which airs tonight. Dear Mama,
- 45:21Speaker 1: A love Letter to Mom's premiering again on VICH one tonight.
- 45:25Speaker 1: It's nine pm Eastern Standard Time, hosted by my good
- 45:28Speaker 1: friend Lola Anthony and my boy Anthony. And tell us
- 45:31Speaker 1: about what you're doing on the show tonight. Well, I'm
- 45:34Speaker 1: surprising Puff Daddy's mother with one of her sons of
- 45:38Speaker 1: Patty labels that she loves. You are my friends, and
- 45:43Speaker 1: I just I mean, I was so happy to have
- 45:46Speaker 1: been asked to do this, you know, and I've known
- 45:48Speaker 1: Puffy and his mother for a long time and they're
- 45:51Speaker 1: so genuine And how do you say no to something
- 45:54Speaker 1: like that? Well, you know you, you know you're a
- 45:57Speaker 1: conversationalist in concert because I've seen you many times and
- 46:00Speaker 1: you are you move people and you motivate people through
- 46:03Speaker 1: your music. I've seen people, I've seen people cry, I've
- 46:07Speaker 1: seen people go to church in your concerts. That that
- 46:11Speaker 1: that that carrits a lot of responsibility when you do
- 46:14Speaker 1: a show, doesn't it, Patty? Yeah, of course does because
- 46:19Speaker 1: once I, uh, before we go on stage and then
- 46:23Speaker 1: my musical director and are we go over the list,
- 46:25Speaker 1: it's like twenty songs for an hour and uh thirty
- 46:29Speaker 1: minutes or ever how long I can be on stage.
- 46:32Speaker 1: But whenever I go out and see the audience, that
- 46:35Speaker 1: list change every day. And never saw five shows every night.
- 46:42Speaker 1: The same song will be different because I sing it differently.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I interpret things differently every time I get on stage.
- 46:49Speaker 1: So you can never predict what Patty's going to sing
- 46:52Speaker 1: or say. And I believe that. Now you've got a
- 46:54Speaker 1: big concert Mother's Day concert coming up mate at the
- 46:57Speaker 1: James L. Man Night Center, which I've been that many
- 47:00Speaker 1: times with Steve Harvey. That's a great facility in Miami, Florida.
- 47:06Speaker 1: And if you want any additional day, go to Patti
- 47:08Speaker 1: LaBelle dot com and you can get to tickets. Now
- 47:11Speaker 1: let's let's go to this acting. This acting that you're doing. Now,
- 47:15Speaker 1: you know you on you on the Star Fox TV
- 47:19Speaker 1: show Star. You're playing Queen Latifa's mother. Christine tell us
- 47:22Speaker 1: about that role, Well, Paintlestifa is one of my best
- 47:26Speaker 1: friends from back in the day, and she always would
- 47:28Speaker 1: call me sort of like mom. And you know, since
- 47:31Speaker 1: the guy, it's like I said to the mother's I
- 47:36Speaker 1: I accepted Queen the ward in Philadelphia about a week
- 47:39Speaker 1: after her mother past because she couldn't accept it. And
- 47:42Speaker 1: when I heard I was going to play her mother,
- 47:44Speaker 1: I said, this is just perfect. But then when I
- 47:45Speaker 1: heard I was playing a gangster mom, a stretch. But
- 47:51Speaker 1: most of my friends, thank you, thank you, thank you
- 47:57Speaker 1: who you did. And I am that woman. And Brandy
- 48:01Speaker 1: Brandy is also my daughter on the Ster. And I'm
- 48:05Speaker 1: gonna go back and do some more episode mis Lee
- 48:08Speaker 1: Daniels and I mean, I'm happy to do that, soho.
- 48:12Speaker 1: And then I'm on the show Green Leaf Opra Winfrey's
- 48:15Speaker 1: on the own network. I'm playing a minister. I'm a pastor. Okay,
- 48:19Speaker 1: so you playing a gangster, playing a gangster mom on
- 48:22Speaker 1: the Star and you're playing a minister, A minister. That's
- 48:30Speaker 1: diversity there, girl, that's diversity. And then on a Netflix
- 48:35Speaker 1: I'm playing Patty LaBelle I am h Alan Arkin's wife
- 48:39Speaker 1: dies and it's with Jay Leno and Michael Douglas and
- 48:43Speaker 1: I'm playing Patty Labell singing Lady Marmalade at half funeral,
- 48:47Speaker 1: and you know that's that's a stretch to sing that
- 48:49Speaker 1: kind of thung out a funeral. I've offered things and
- 48:55Speaker 1: I'm just happy to be in the position not I
- 48:58Speaker 1: am ex send me three. Because usually when you age
- 49:01Speaker 1: you things don't come to you as much. You know,
- 49:04Speaker 1: you you you disappear, right, and I've not. I've not
- 49:08Speaker 1: been you know, disappearing with both and it's just a blessing.
- 49:12Speaker 1: You know. I know that it could happen the other
- 49:15Speaker 1: way totally for me, but it's happening in a great way.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Well you know that's why. That's why I mentioned social
- 49:21Speaker 1: media to you, because you are relevant and that's that's
- 49:24Speaker 1: really the difference in being seventy three twenty years ago
- 49:27Speaker 1: and being seventy three today, because you're relevant on Facebook,
- 49:31Speaker 1: you're relevant on Twitter, you're relevant on Instagram. And it
- 49:34Speaker 1: used to be just having a website and the fan club.
- 49:37Speaker 1: So don't don't underseil yourself because of the fact that
- 49:40Speaker 1: you made yourself a topical brand. And I always tell
- 49:42Speaker 1: people about that, especially as an entrepreneur. You being so topical,
- 49:46Speaker 1: it means that we can follow you as fans. You
- 49:49Speaker 1: your engagement or whatever you post something on your social
- 49:51Speaker 1: media is powerful and relevant. And also you post inspirational
- 49:55Speaker 1: quotes too that inspire us to realize that you know,
- 49:59Speaker 1: there's no age when you cannot be successful. That's what
- 50:01Speaker 1: your vision is for me. And you know what also
- 50:05Speaker 1: that made me feel so great is when I did
- 50:07Speaker 1: dance when the starts at one and after that at
- 50:10Speaker 1: the airport closing orcase, people say you did that at
- 50:13Speaker 1: certainly once a we can do anything more? I said,
- 50:15Speaker 1: any of you put your heart to sister numbers, not stop. Now,
- 50:20Speaker 1: let's talk about this. Let's talk about this, this cooking show.
- 50:23Speaker 1: Because I'm tired of people I would tell I don't
- 50:26Speaker 1: know how word got out that I was bringing you
- 50:28Speaker 1: on my show, but I've had at least three celebrities
- 50:31Speaker 1: called me go how can I gives? Just asked Patty
- 50:34Speaker 1: how can I get booked on her cooking show? So
- 50:37Speaker 1: please tell the world, Patty, how do you get your
- 50:40Speaker 1: guests for your show? Because I'm tiring. I'm talking driving
- 50:42Speaker 1: up here to day. I got two texts. Please tell
- 50:45Speaker 1: Patty show, Please tell Patty. So how do you get
- 50:48Speaker 1: on your Well, first of all, you don't have to
- 50:51Speaker 1: be at Oka. You can do just an everyday woman
- 50:56Speaker 1: or man or whatever. Uh. And I have a lot
- 50:59Speaker 1: of of yours been on the shows because that's just
- 51:02Speaker 1: come out and ask them. And so if there are
- 51:04Speaker 1: any celebrities that want to ask me, can they be on?
- 51:06Speaker 1: Just go to Patty dot com and put it out
- 51:09Speaker 1: there and I'll let you know if you're worthy. But
- 51:12Speaker 1: I'm only joking the gangster side you. That was the
- 51:19Speaker 1: gangster sidey. I love waking your show because because you
- 51:23Speaker 1: know you you you know you pick stuff over your hands,
- 51:26Speaker 1: you put your hands are clean because you know a
- 51:27Speaker 1: lot of cooking shows everything everything is with fargs and everything.
- 51:31Speaker 1: But when you're cooking in your kitchen, come on, now,
- 51:34Speaker 1: you're handed clean. I remember when j hard you know,
- 51:38Speaker 1: and take off those range You can't be mixing hands
- 51:41Speaker 1: rings on. There you go, there you go, there you go.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Now I've done some things with the rings on, but
- 51:47Speaker 1: if not with mixing. You can't mix stuff with dirty
- 51:50Speaker 1: fingernails and rings. You cannot do that. You cannot do that.
- 51:53Speaker 1: You absolutely tell them. Let mesk you this about the
- 51:57Speaker 1: Patty's Good Lifeline, which is currently included pies, cobblers. Just
- 52:01Speaker 1: the entrepreneurship side though. What I want to just keep
- 52:04Speaker 1: at seventy three that you're becoming a brand with banana
- 52:08Speaker 1: putting in fancy kicks all available with Walmart. Where is
- 52:11Speaker 1: that that right now? Tell us how I know it's exploding,
- 52:15Speaker 1: tell us about it. It's exploding. And I'm also, uh,
- 52:19Speaker 1: I have betting you know at Macy. I have betting
- 52:22Speaker 1: at um Walmart also, and I have I have so
- 52:26Speaker 1: many other things like twenty eight items about to appear,
- 52:29Speaker 1: you know, uh my brand, and we're just moving right
- 52:33Speaker 1: along with quality. Uh nothing that so better taste, so
- 52:38Speaker 1: naty you don't want to eat, or something not so
- 52:40Speaker 1: soft that you don't want to put it in your bed.
- 52:42Speaker 1: So I'm doing the best I can with what I have.
- 52:45Speaker 1: And what I have is my son who is my manager,
- 52:48Speaker 1: and friends Alex you know, who pushed me like crazy
- 52:53Speaker 1: and for years they've been working for this Good Life brand.
- 52:56Speaker 1: And the Sweet Potato pies were the first thing that
- 52:59Speaker 1: you know, we put out there and they did quite
- 53:02Speaker 1: quite well and they're still doing more. We know the
- 53:04Speaker 1: thing I just want to tell everybody about you know,
- 53:07Speaker 1: you be on VH one to night on the Dear
- 53:11Speaker 1: Mama Special and you're being concerned made thirteenth to James L.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Knight in Miami, Florida. But you're such a brand and
- 53:18Speaker 1: you're such a topical inspiration and the fact that when
- 53:21Speaker 1: I'm talking to you, you seem so happy because you're
- 53:24Speaker 1: so happy because the variety that multiple streams of income
- 53:28Speaker 1: is surrounding your life. Did you see this coming? I
- 53:31Speaker 1: know your son, you know, I know him very well,
- 53:33Speaker 1: and he was always we can do more, we can
- 53:35Speaker 1: do more, and to see it coming into fruition. What
- 53:38Speaker 1: are your thoughts on that? Patty? My thoughts would be
- 53:41Speaker 1: on that that it should have happened because my it's quality,
- 53:45Speaker 1: you know. And then I knew too that being the
- 53:48Speaker 1: black woman who wouldn't be accepted as quickly as maybe
- 53:51Speaker 1: Betty Crocker or Paula Dean or anything. So they worked
- 53:56Speaker 1: so hard and I worked for her in perfecting the
- 53:59Speaker 1: recipes for the that I knew it had to do
- 54:01Speaker 1: something because I know it's great, not good, it's great,
- 54:06Speaker 1: and I can't put my name on anything. I know
- 54:08Speaker 1: you can't. I know that's absolutely true. And I'm gonna
- 54:11Speaker 1: just tell everybody before we're in this interview about you
- 54:13Speaker 1: as an individual. And I mentioned it earlier in my
- 54:16Speaker 1: intro Dad when I launched Money Making Conversations. You know,
- 54:20Speaker 1: there's a lot of friendship. A lot of people say
- 54:22Speaker 1: you called rashaan show and you called me. And at
- 54:25Speaker 1: the time, you know, I just had one station in Houston, Texas,
- 54:29Speaker 1: and you trusted the instincts of supporting me. And I'm
- 54:32Speaker 1: just gonna let you know now you know U on
- 54:34Speaker 1: my heart radio podcast, I get two and fifty thousand
- 54:37Speaker 1: download today. I'm on Serious XM Channel one for the
- 54:41Speaker 1: one that's h U Rtist Howard University. I'm on Serious

- 54:47Speaker 1: HBCU campuses. I have a fan club over two two thousand.
- 54:51Speaker 1: I've almost a million social media followers, and I'm gonna
- 54:54Speaker 1: just tell you that a lot of it was due
- 54:56Speaker 1: to the fact that you you branded me MS LaBelle,
- 55:01Speaker 1: you branded me and you supported me. And I want
- 55:03Speaker 1: to say thank you on this day. My mom is

- 55:10Speaker 1: thank you for supporting me. Okay when later, thank you
