- 0:24The. Thank you so much.
- 0:35All right, good morning, everybody.
- 0:39My name is Pastor Dave. I am the middle school director
- 0:42here at Rez. Thank you guys.
- 0:45You guys. You have awesome kids, by the
- 0:46way. I know I was with them all week.
- 0:50My body is sore, my throat hurts, and I I wasn't even
- 0:56screaming and I'll probably never wear a Jedi costume to
- 1:03church again probably. But let me tell you, my heart is
- 1:12full. My spirit is full.
- 1:15If I got the chance to experience the hand of God in
- 1:22our presence, forever changing the lives of students and really
- 1:28everyone who was here that witnessed it all, I would do it
- 1:33all again tomorrow. And we kid you not, the baptisms
- 1:38were through. It was crazy.
- 1:41There were so many baptisms. It was it was wild.
- 1:45We were handing out wet used towels for kids to dry off over
- 1:51and over again. By the end of it, our waters, no
- 1:55joke, turned from this crystal clear to this delectable kids
- 1:59soup. There are all kinds of things
- 2:04floating in it. That murky water?
- 2:10It represented 22 lives being washed clean by the blood of
- 2:15Jesus Christ. Over 30 students realized that
- 2:24they were playing games with God and decided this week was the
- 2:29week that they were going to be serious, that they were going to
- 2:33rededicate their lives, they were going to follow Him with
- 2:37all they had. Amen to that church.
- 2:41This is what happens when the body of Christ shows up in
- 2:46Christ, honors it, when you show up with your time, your energy,
- 2:55your sacrifices. I know you've been giving.
- 2:59I know you've been encouraging students all week.
- 3:05We're encouraging students to become Jedi disciples who begin
- 3:11to abide in God's Word, to experience his spirit and life,
- 3:18to believe God who sent Jesus to follow him through darkness
- 3:27because he is the light of the world.
- 3:32We are learning this week after week.
- 3:35We're encouraging them all to memorize the fruits of the
- 3:38Spirit. If you ask any of the students
- 3:41in there, they probably will tell you I beat it into them
- 3:47because that was our goal for the whole week, to have love and
- 3:52joy and no peace and patience and kindness and goodness and
- 3:56faithfulness and gentleness and self-control.
- 4:02Thursday we had this light bulb moment that these lifestyle
- 4:10changes, these choices, they come from one source.
- 4:16That source is having Jesus Christ in your life and abiding
- 4:21in him. So today join me in John chapter
- 4:288. I give you a second to get there
- 4:31in your Bibles. If you don't have it, it's going
- 4:33to be on the screens. We'll be in verse 31.
- 4:41This is where Jesus is questioning.
- 4:45He questions if we are abiding in His truth or just memorizing
- 4:52facts, where he's questioning if we are true disciples or just
- 5:01knowledge gatherers. So let's read verse 31.
- 5:07So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, If you abide
- 5:14in my word, you are truly my disciple, and you will know the
- 5:20truth, and the truth will set you free.
- 5:25They answered him, We are offspring of Abraham and have
- 5:29never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say you will
- 5:36become free? Jesus answered them Truly,
- 5:43truly. I say to you, everyone who
- 5:47practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the
- 5:55house forever. The sun remains forever.
- 6:00So if the sun sets you free, you will be free.
- 6:05Indeed. Our big idea for today is
- 6:10abiding, is moving from knowledge collecting to life
- 6:15transformation. I'll say that again, abiding is
- 6:20moving from life, from knowledge collecting to life
- 6:26transformation. Abiding in knowledge is much
- 6:30more than facts and information gathering.
- 6:32I would know my favorite way to pass a test is to memorize it.
- 6:40Memorize the questions so the instant I see, I know the
- 6:45answer. Or even worse, I'll just
- 6:50memorize the answer. I'll visualize patterns or
- 6:55themes. Can I?
- 6:58Can I be honest for a second? In seminary Bible college, I was
- 7:03a master at gaming the system. I remember this one question.
- 7:11In what way does Jesus divinity manifest itself?
- 7:15I knew that question had 7 answers and each of them, each
- 7:19of the words ended with ER or Orr.
- 7:23So I memorized the pattern, but I didn't dig into the truth.
- 7:31I aced the test. It's about Jesus without
- 7:36actually knowing Jesus any deeper.
- 7:43I turned the Son of God into a word puzzle, just collecting
- 7:51Bible facts while my heart stayed unchanged.
- 7:57Why? Because this is the fastest way
- 8:00for me to pass a test. It demands the least from me,
- 8:06keeping my involvement to a bare minimum.
- 8:11But does that actually change me?
- 8:14Did it develop my knowledge on the subject?
- 8:18Does it actually grow me, Prepare me?
- 8:22Did it instill any of the fruits of the Spirit into my character
- 8:25that we've been pounding into you all week?
- 8:30Was it transforming me into a better person?
- 8:35The idea of being transformed directly come from abiding in
- 8:41Jesus. Abiding.
- 8:44Abiding. What a weird word.
- 8:48We don't even hear it anymore, probably because we're too busy.
- 8:55Abiding means to remain, to dwell, to let something
- 9:03penetrate you so deep into your soul that it changes you,
- 9:13changing not what you know, but who you are and how you actually
- 9:20live. Back to verse 31.
- 9:25So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, If you abide
- 9:32in my word, you are truly my disciples.
- 9:37Jesus is laying out what it really means to be a disciple,
- 9:41or he's laying out what it actually means to be what we
- 9:45call a Christian, a follower of Christ.
- 9:52Through the past several weeks, if you've been sitting in
- 9:54church, you've been reading John chapter 8.
- 9:57Jesus is surrounded by people who are surface level in their
- 10:01beliefs. At best, one moment they believe
- 10:08Jesus is speaking the truth, giving amazing guidance and
- 10:13insight, and then in the next, like they turned off the lights.
- 10:20These people are living in the dark, disregarding Jesus for
- 10:26their personal opinions. Jesus is trying to lead them
- 10:33into a real a deep personal understanding of what what it
- 10:39means to be a follower of him, a follower of Jesus, a Christian.
- 10:49Just like the Jews here. It's possible for us, say me, to
- 10:57believe in God and not let His truths shape our lives.
- 11:07Abiding in His Word implies commitment, enduring continue
- 11:17practice, and obedience to His teaching.
- 11:25It's possible believing God, but not walk the life of a true
- 11:29disciple. How do I know?
- 11:31Because I do that all the time. I wear the title Christian.
- 11:39But sometime, sometimes I'm just tired.
- 11:42I'm exhausted. I'm worked out, tired of being
- 11:46strong, tired of pretending everything is OK.
- 11:51Christianity calls me to lay down my life and to pick up and
- 11:56carry a cross when I'm already caring so much.
- 12:03I read come to me, Jesus says this, come to me, all who are
- 12:08weary, but I keep running to the other things instead.
- 12:15Entertainment, every distraction I can think of, performance, and
- 12:22ultimately I just have to check out.
- 12:27I want peace but avoid the path that leads to it.
- 12:33Obedience. I want joy but I avoid pruning
- 12:38what I know is souring me. I want transformation but avoid
- 12:46surrender because even though I am exhausted, I am tired, I have
- 12:55done all I can. I still I think it's best for me
- 13:02to be in control. The real cost of discipleship
- 13:11isn't doing more, it's laying more down.
- 13:17Think about that. The real cost, what it really
- 13:20cost you to be a disciple, is not to do more, it's to give
- 13:28more. Up my pride, my pace, myself
- 13:36made strength. Jesus isn't asking me to hustle
- 13:41harder, but to trust deeper, to abide, not to strive, to rest in
- 13:51him. Not just for him.
- 13:56Because the title Christian does not transform me.
- 14:03Discipleship in Christ is a person who's developing,
- 14:10growing, changing. It's a person who's becoming
- 14:13more like the teacher, more like Jesus.
- 14:21And often I fall back into being more like Dave, less like Jesus.
- 14:32According to the Bible, there are two versions of you.
- 14:35One who was enslaved to sin, living under the power of
- 14:43fleshly desires. This is kind of our default.
- 14:47This is what we started from. The other is filled with the
- 14:53Holy Spirit, living as if we were originally created in the
- 14:59image of God as we were. So when I say I want to be Dave,
- 15:07I have to ask which Dave, the one that's redeemed and made
- 15:14holy by God, or the one who is still bonded to sin?
- 15:19And when did becoming like Dave become more appealing like than
- 15:27being like Jesus? When what makes me think more of
- 15:35me is better than more of God? When I stopped abiding in
- 15:45Christ? When I stopped recognizing that
- 15:51my life isn't how He intended it to be.
- 15:57This transformation is recognizing that I need God's
- 16:00word to shape my life. This is a disciple.
- 16:08This is what Jesus is talking about, or this is what we call
- 16:12in church sanctification. It's the growth in your capacity
- 16:19to be more like Christ, to be more like Jesus in your
- 16:24character. All right, think of it like
- 16:28this. You guys like food?
- 16:29Yes. OK, four people like food.
- 16:34OK, The foodies in here, you don't get intense flavour by
- 16:41brushing on marinade. Brush it on, throw it on the
- 16:44grill. How's it taste?
- 16:47If you want your rib eye to taste like garlic and balsamic
- 16:51and explode in flavours, you can't just dip it in and cook
- 16:55it. Nothing sinks in, nothing
- 16:59changes. Real flavor comes when you let
- 17:04it soak in, absorb when you work that marinade deep, give it time
- 17:13to break down the tough parts and then fuse into the middle.
- 17:21That's how transformation happens, not with a quick
- 17:26splash, but with the slow, deliberate soaking.
- 17:36And the same is true with God's Word.
- 17:39It has to soak in, not just sit on.
- 17:50Jesus says in order for you to become a true disciple, He says
- 17:54you must continue. In my Word, discipleship always
- 18:01involves 2 key components. Receiving His word #1 and being
- 18:11shaped by His Word. It's both truth learned and
- 18:17skill developed. Abiding means more than hearing.
- 18:21It means continuing in it, applying it, living it.
- 18:30Information must be married between practice and skill.
- 18:37Imagine you need something like a heart surgery.
- 18:42Something that's super important.
- 18:45And your surgeon walks in and he starts explaining it to you,
- 18:48This is what I'm going to do. And he shows you diagrams of how
- 18:50your heart's working. And you're impressed.
- 18:52Like, wow, this guy's pretty good.
- 18:54And then he's got his medical degrees on the wall.
- 18:56Wow. He doesn't go to a Skibby
- 18:58school. Then you ask him the question
- 19:04that changes everything. How many of these have you
- 19:08actually done? He goes Oh no, I've never done
- 19:13this before, you're my first. Suddenly all that knowledge is
- 19:21just surface level. When life and death is on the
- 19:27line, information without experience is worthless.
- 19:33Life is too big of a deal to not get this right.
- 19:37Abiding is moving from knowledge collecting to life
- 19:42transformation and in a life and death scenario, information is
- 19:48not enough. Knowing Christ or not knowing
- 19:55Christ is a life and death situation.
- 20:02We love to gain knowledge. We love to hear God's Word.
- 20:06We love the idea of living godly lives.
- 20:14We are so good at biblical knowledge gathering, but for
- 20:18informational purposes only. We want the data without the
- 20:25responsibility. That's truthfully what happens
- 20:29on a Sunday morning. So many people come in, but they
- 20:34don't continue in God's word. They hear God's word.
- 20:38They come in and say, give me a sermon, teach me, preach to me,
- 20:42make it good, make it exciting, let's get our lightsabers out,
- 20:45let's go crazy. But the second they leave those
- 20:52back doors, is it being applied to our lives or is it simply
- 20:59they love the feeling of church and excitement?
- 21:03And don't get me wrong, church is amazing.
- 21:07Church is here to lift us up, to refocus on the Lord.
- 21:14But Jesus says when we're not abiding in his word, when it's
- 21:19not changing you, when you love the way you live more than the
- 21:24way the Lord asks you to live, Jesus says, you're not my
- 21:31disciple. You may be a church attender,
- 21:36you may be taking tons of notes, but a disciple, No, you may be
- 21:41saved and on your way to heaven because you truly believe in
- 21:45him. But his disciple, No.
- 21:51Again, verse 31. So Jesus said to the Jews who
- 21:56had believed in him, If you abide in my word, you are truly
- 22:03my disciple, and you will know the truth, and the truth will
- 22:09set you free. They answered him, We are
- 22:12offspring of Abraham, and I've never been enslaved to anyone.
- 22:16How is that you say you will become free?
- 22:22Become free? What is this freedom he's
- 22:25talking about? We live in America.
- 22:28What do we need to be free from? The Jews are asking the same
- 22:34question, which is blowing my mind.
- 22:37These are the same people that God had to save from an
- 22:41enslaving hand of Pharaoh. How could these people forget
- 22:46about their million people leaving Egypt where God had to
- 22:52intervene? Get in the middle of it
- 22:54physically do one of the most spectacular miracles of parting
- 22:59the seas. It's the same way we forget to
- 23:04put Christ in our lives. Somebody might be thinking this
- 23:12Jesus talk sounds great, but I'm not even sure this guy existed
- 23:182000 years ago, let alone that he can set me free from the
- 23:23things that I'm dealing with today.
- 23:26That's a fair question, I get that.
- 23:29I understand what you're thinking, but let me show you,
- 23:33no matter how skeptical you may be, that freedom that Jesus
- 23:40talks about changes lives. All of us have a basic idea of
- 23:47tools. Yes, we have tools at home.
- 23:50OK, We have all kinds of tools. We have computers, we have
- 23:54phones. Some that's good, some of it's
- 23:56not so good. We have cars, we have drills,
- 24:02and there's a way to use our tools well, the way that they
- 24:05were designed. But if you don't use the tool
- 24:09correctly, you'll ruin the tool. If you took an electric drill
- 24:17and you used it as a hammer, eventually this will no longer
- 24:22be an electric drill. It'll be destroyed.
- 24:26There'll be pieces. If you take it and you start
- 24:28digging and trying to use it as a pry bar.
- 24:31Done it before, destroys it, by the way.
- 24:35It's pretty messed up. It's no longer optimum.
- 24:43The lie the devil tells you is that anytime you have a
- 24:47restriction, a barrier, a guideline, a guardrail in your
- 24:57life, you are not free. That's basically saying how dare
- 25:05you tell me how to use that drill?
- 25:09How dare you? If I want to use it as a hammer,
- 25:11I'm going to use it as a hammer. How dare you.
- 25:15You're so enslaved. Often in our culture, we look at
- 25:23guidelines and designs that the Bible talks about and go How can
- 25:27rules or guidelines lead to freedom?
- 25:32But here's what's wild the husband and wife who actually
- 25:37follow God's design, who choose exclusivity, who practice
- 25:44selfless love, who build their relationships on trust, respect,
- 25:52biblical commitment. These couples, they report the
- 25:58highest satisfactions in their marriage.
- 26:04The reality is when we actually live life the way our Creator
- 26:10designed for us to live, this is when we are the most satisfied.
- 26:19You were created for a dependent relationship with your Creator.
- 26:23Let me say it again, you were created for a dependent
- 26:29relationship. We don't like that word, but
- 26:33it's true. And life without Him will not
- 26:39feel satisfied. In fact, life without Him leaves
- 26:46you feeling broken, missing out. True freedom isn't about having
- 26:52no rules. It's about living within the
- 26:56right rules that actually fit how we were designed to work.
- 27:03So you can be your absolute best.
- 27:08Jesus is. True freedom means being
- 27:10liberated from bondages and limitations, bondage that is
- 27:15preventing you and I from becoming what we were created
- 27:18for. What Jesus died on the cross
- 27:21for. Bondage is such a shame and
- 27:24guilt. Unprocessed trauma, envy,
- 27:28addictions, goes on and on. Here's what's fascinating.
- 27:35Jesus is making a claim that every human can test this, that
- 27:41there are invisible chains holding us back from becoming
- 27:45our best selves. You don't have to believe in
- 27:49miracles to recognize that something inside of us sabotages
- 27:55our own happiness. We know what is good for us, but
- 28:03we keep doing what hurts us. Jesus says this pattern has a
- 28:09name, it's called slavery to sin, and he claims he has the
- 28:16key to break those chains off. How does an addict know that
- 28:23they're an addict? At one point do they say I am a
- 28:28drug addict, I'm a sex addict, I'm an alcoholic?
- 28:33The truth is, at first they don't, because addiction doesn't
- 28:38feel like slavery in the beginning.
- 28:41It feels like freedom. It feels like a choice.
- 28:46It feels like you're in control. From the outside, we say, how
- 28:55could they not see that they're a slave to this?
- 29:00But when we're doing it, we don't feel like a slave until
- 29:07you try to walk away and you can't.
- 29:14I didn't think I was a slave to working, being a workaholic,
- 29:20even though I've been told many times you need a vacation.
- 29:24Working myself to the point of depletion.
- 29:27I didn't believe it because I was doing it to myself.
- 29:32And I love working. It makes me feel good, makes me
- 29:35feel important. When I'm not working, I miss it.
- 29:39I can't stop thinking about getting things done.
- 29:45This is just me. Anybody else in this room have
- 29:50something in their life that is like that?
- 29:54Amen to that hand. Freedom isn't doing what you
- 30:00want. Freedom is being able to stop
- 30:05when you realize you need to stop.
- 30:09Freedom is having the sight that you need to stop.
- 30:14Slavery is when you can't stop. Verse 34 Jesus, answer them
- 30:23Truly, truly. I say to you, everyone who
- 30:27practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the
- 30:31house forever. The sun remains forever.
- 30:34So if the sun sets you free, you will be free.
- 30:38Indeed. Abiding is moving from knowledge
- 30:44collecting to life transformation.
- 30:48Our big idea for today is simply stated.
- 30:51It's easy to say, yet it's not often taken seriously.
- 31:00I know because I often fall short of abiding in His word,
- 31:07from dwelling in it, from pondering how His words should
- 31:12change my character, from letting it truly set me free.
- 31:18I do this because it's easier to skim than to soak.
- 31:25Because I will seek the Lord as an afterthought because I'm too
- 31:30caught up in everything else. And there's a lot going on.
- 31:35Romans 12/2 says do not be conformed to the patterns of
- 31:39this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
- 31:44And it's crazy to me how I will only see transformation when
- 31:48it's so deep, when I'm in it so deep that it's hurting.
- 31:58My thought life, my prayer life, it becomes about me.
- 32:06I'm enslaved by what I want, ultimately letting the sin of my
- 32:13life overcome and enslave me. And if I'm being honest, the
- 32:21same split sin that's enslaving me is enslaving you, not
- 32:27allowing you to have and enjoy the benefits that God is
- 32:33promising us, keeping us from the benefits that we were
- 32:36created to receive. And that's my question I asked
- 32:42you today. Do you have true freedom from
- 32:48life's bondages? Christ offers freedom in his
- 32:53salvation. It's not merely enough to know
- 32:57that Christ can set you free. He has to be a part of you
- 33:02before you become free to take off those sinful chains of your
- 33:09life. Christ offers in this through a
- 33:14real relationship with Him and if you actually believe in
- 33:19Christ that Christ is who he says He is, He gives you the
- 33:25free gift of salvation and it starts to break you free.
- 33:29Our lives consequences may seem impossible to overcome, but the
- 33:36reality is without Christ most of them are right now I give you
- 33:45the opportunity to have a real relationship with Jesus today.
- 33:51The Bible says you must place your faith in Him to be saved.
- 33:55Romans 10/9 through 10 says because if you confess with your
- 34:00mouth that Jesus is Lord, and you believe in your heart that
- 34:05God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 34:10For with a heart 1 believes and is justified, and with the mouth
- 34:161 confesses and is saved. If you would like to surrender
- 34:22your life to God today, I want to give you that chance.
- 34:27So if everybody could please bow your heads, close your eyes,
- 34:32just for a quick moment. This is just so you can focus on
- 34:36God, if you're willing to ask Him for forgiveness and
- 34:43salvation with every head bound you can quietly, silently repeat
- 34:52repeat this prayer or something similar.
- 34:54Jesus, I know I am messed up. I am a Sinner.
- 35:02I can't save myself. I want you to save me, adopt me
- 35:10into your family. I surrender everything to you.
- 35:18I receive your promise of forgiveness.
- 35:25I receive your adoption and eternal life.
- 35:30Jesus, please be my Lord with every head down.
- 35:36If you pray that prayer for the very first time, would you be
- 35:41brave enough to raise your hand? Amen.
- 35:47You may put your hands down in the amazing power of Jesus.
- 35:52Amen. If you just committed your life
- 35:56to Jesus for the very first time, welcome to his forever
- 35:59family. There are tables in the back of
- 36:08this room behind banners that says, I raised my hand and we
- 36:14just have a small gift for you, something to celebrate.
- 36:17But really we just want to pray with you and be there for you
- 36:20while you make this first step into having Christ come into
- 36:23your life and change your life and start breaking you free from
- 36:27the things that you know you're working through.
- 36:30And before we end today, let me give you some practical steps of
- 36:36abiding in God's word #1 hang out with God's Word.
- 36:43Hang out. Take a second.
- 36:47One of the best places to do this is in our community groups.
- 36:51Our community groups are not secular Hangouts.
- 36:56They are centered around the Word of God.
- 37:01Because community is nice, but biblical community is essential
- 37:06for everyone here. It's the word that changes us.
- 37:13Sometimes it's the word from other believers, so hopefully
- 37:18with a group of people, if not by yourself, take a verse, take
- 37:26a section of scripture and read it over.
- 37:30Ask God, am I living like this? Pray and ask Him.
- 37:36God, what are you telling me in this section of your word?
- 37:41Let it soak into you. Dwell on it.
- 37:45If you have no idea what it means, even better.
- 37:49Search, see, talk to people about it #2 be a doer, not just
- 37:57a hearer. Throughout the week, take a
- 38:00moment to ponder the word that you've been reading, that you
- 38:03opened up and read, and ask yourself, how can this change my
- 38:08outlook on a situation? How should it change my
- 38:12character or my actions? Lastly, find a verse that speaks
- 38:20directly to an area you know you are called to be transformed in.
- 38:29Utilize your pastors, your elders, your leaders, the people
- 38:35around you to find a verse that speaks into what you know you
- 38:39need to change in, Be transformed.
- 38:43Write that verse somewhere where you'll see it multiple times a
- 38:46day, every thought, Every time you see it, don't just read it.
- 38:50Confess your need for God's help to actually live it out, because
- 38:57we really need God's help. The goal is not perfection, it's
- 39:05authentic discipleship. It's when we get to see God,
- 39:11when we are face to face with God and he says, you, you were
- 39:15my disciple. It's allowing God's truth to
- 39:21slowly conform you to the image of His Son.
- 39:27As we close the song, I ask you all to please stand.
- 39:33Our prayer team will be up here if you need to pray about
- 39:37anything. And when I say anything, I
- 39:38really need it. These people have heard it all.
- 39:43If you need healing, if you need encouragement, if you need just
- 39:48to be with somebody, come forward and pray with them.
