- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning and welcome back. We are
- 0:17live from Snarful Solutions Group here in sunny
- 0:20Sacramento, California. We are indeed. It is
- 0:23Monday, January 26th, 2026. And looking at the
- 0:27national weather map. I think we're just about
- 0:29the only sunny spot. Yeah, seriously. It looks
- 0:32like the rest of the country is really taking
- 0:34a beating right now. It is brutal out there.
- 0:37We're calling it the National Freeze. And even
- 0:39that feels like an understatement. Oh, for sure.
- 0:41If you're listening from the Northeast, you're
- 0:42just buried in snow. The storm warnings are everywhere.
- 0:45And it's not just snow, right? It's that wintry
- 0:48mix in the mid -Atlantic. The sleet and the freezing
- 0:50rain. Yeah, that's always a nightmare for the
- 0:53power grids. Then you've got this huge cold front
- 0:56pushing down from the northern plains all the
- 0:59way to the Ohio Valley. Sub -zero temperatures.
- 1:02I mean, that's dangerous cold. Meanwhile, here
- 1:05in Sacramento, I almost feel bad saying it. Go
- 1:08on, go on, rub it in. We had some patchy fog
- 1:11this morning, but that's already clearing up.
- 1:12It's going to be, what, mostly sunny with a high
- 1:15of 54? Pretty much perfect. So if you're freezing
- 1:18somewhere, just, you know, close your eyes and
- 1:20pretend you're here. There you go. Alright, before
- 1:23we get into the tech news, let's do a quick check
- 1:25on the markets to kick off the week. It looks
- 1:27like a bit of a mixed bag to start. The Dow is
- 1:29down a little bit, about 165 points, so that's
- 1:33roughly a third of a percent. But the S &P 500
- 1:36is holding on. It's actually in the green, just
- 1:38barely. Yeah. Up about 0 .11%. And for all you
- 1:41crypto watchers out there... Bitcoins having
- 1:44a pretty good Monday. Yeah up over 1 % is hovering
- 1:47right around eighty seven thousand five hundred
- 1:49dollars, which is nice for the day But you have
- 1:51to remember it's still down from last week. That's
- 1:54the bigger picture. Yeah, it's down about 5 %
- 1:56since last Monday So a little recovery but still
- 2:00volatile as always Okay, before we crack open
- 2:03our Morningstar report. We have to give a shout
- 2:06out to our sponsor old glory Oh, this is a great
- 2:09one. If you have that one friend who is just
- 2:12impossible to shop for. We all have one. The
- 2:14one who's obsessed with like obscure band tees
- 2:17or vintage sports gear, Old Glory is your answer.
- 2:21They're an iconic music and sports fan merch
- 2:24store. And they really do have everything. Hoodies,
- 2:27collectibles, just all that stuff you can't find
- 2:29anywhere else. And now that the holiday rush
- 2:31is over. It's honestly the perfect time to stock
- 2:33up for birthdays and things without all the stress.
- 2:36Absolutely. And they've given us a great deal
- 2:38for our listeners. Use the promo code SNARFL.
- 2:41And just so you know, that's pronounced SNARFL.
- 2:44Right. Use that at checkout and you will get
- 2:4615 % off your entire purchase. That's a really
- 2:49solid discount. So check them out at OldGlory
- 2:51.com. All right. Let's get into it. We've got
- 2:54the SNAR Full Tech article report in front of
- 2:57us, the Morningstar, and it's a fascinating mix
- 3:00today. Yeah, it really is. We've got regulation,
- 3:02we've got innovation, a bit of everything. Three
- 3:05big stories. First, a huge legal showdown in
- 3:08Europe over AI safety. And then a double header
- 3:10about Intel that might just, and I mean this,
- 3:13change how you think about laptops forever. It's
- 3:16a classic case of connecting the dots, isn't
- 3:17it? You've got the government trying to pump
- 3:19the brakes while the engineers are just flooring
- 3:21the accelerator. Let's start with the brakes
- 3:23then. The European Union. This is a big one.
- 3:26They have officially opened a formal investigation
- 3:29into Elon Musk's XAI. And this isn't just like
- 3:32a warning letter or a slap on the wrist. No,
- 3:34no. This is the real deal. The EU Commission
- 3:38has launched full proceedings under the Digital
- 3:40Services Act, the DSA. And they're targeting
- 3:43Grok specifically, the chatbot on the X platform.
- 3:47They are. And the reason behind it is pretty
- 3:50grim. We're talking about deepfakes. Specifically,
- 3:53non -consensual sexualized deepfakes. Exactly.
- 3:56The core allegation is that Grok was generating
- 3:58images that could, you know, undress real people,
- 4:02women and children. Taking normal photos and
- 4:04creating fake nude or sort of revealing images
- 4:07from them. It's the nightmare scenario for generative
- 4:10AI that everyone's been warning about. It really
- 4:12is. And the EU's response seems incredibly strong.
- 4:15Oh, yeah. Hanover Kuhnen, the executive VP, she
- 4:18came out swinging. She called this a violent,
- 4:21unacceptable form of degradation. I saw that
- 4:24statement. She used the term collateral damage,
- 4:26right? She did. She basically asked if ex -AI
- 4:29considered the rights of European citizens to
- 4:32just be collateral damage in their quest to be,
- 4:35what, edgy. And that's really the core of it.
- 4:37Grok is marketed as this anti -woke AI, the one
- 4:41with fewer guardrails. But the DSA doesn't care
- 4:43about branding. It cares about systemic risk.
- 4:46So explain the DSA a little bit. This goes beyond
- 4:49just a user posting something bad, doesn't it?
- 4:51It's completely structural. The Digital Services
- 4:54Act puts the burden on the platform to mitigate
- 4:57these risks. So it's not enough to say, oh, a
- 4:59user did something bad, we'll take it down. Exactly.
- 5:02If your tool makes it easy for the bad thing
- 5:04to happen, you are liable. And they're looking
- 5:06at two things, the tool itself and then the recommendation
- 5:09algorithm. Algorithms. OK. Why is that part so
- 5:12important? Because it's bad enough if the tool
- 5:15can create this stuff. But it's infinitely worse
- 5:18if the X recommendation engine then starts pushing
- 5:21it into people's feeds to drive engagement. Right.
- 5:24That just amplifies the harm exponentially. So
- 5:28what are the stakes here? What kind of fines
- 5:30are we talking about? We are talking huge numbers.
- 5:33Under the DSA, fines can go up to 6 % of a company's
- 5:37global annual turnover. 6%. For a company like
- 5:40X, that is... That's a massive number. It is.
- 5:44And remember, X has already been in their crosshairs.
- 5:46That's right, the blue checkmarks thing. Yep.
- 5:48They already faced a $140 million fine over deceptive
- 5:52design with that. So there's really no goodwill
- 5:54left in the bank with the regulators. And X's
- 5:57response, I saw they put out a statement claiming
- 5:59zero tolerance. They did. They're saying they're
- 6:02committed to safety, that they don't tolerate
- 6:04this stuff. But in the eyes of the EU, zero tolerance
- 6:07means building systems that prevent it from happening
- 6:10in the first place. Not just cleaning up the
- 6:12mess after the damage is done. Precisely. It
- 6:15really feels like we're moving from the Wild
- 6:17West era of AI into the accountability era. The
- 6:21whole move fast and break things philosophy doesn't
- 6:24really work when the things you're breaking are
- 6:26people's lives and safety. Well said. Okay, we
- 6:29will definitely keep an eye on that. But let's
- 6:30shift gears completely. From the courtroom to
- 6:34the gaming den. A much happier place. Our next
- 6:38two stories are both about Intel. And for the
- 6:41last few years, Intel has been, well, let's be
- 6:44honest, they've been kind of struggling to keep
- 6:46up. They have been. But it seems like they've
- 6:48had a serious wake up call. We're talking about
- 6:50their new Panther Lake chips, specifically the
- 6:53Core Ultra X9 388H. And this is a massive, massive
- 6:58leap forward. So the big headline is about gaming
- 7:00on a laptop, and usually when you hear that you
- 7:02think of a few things. Yep, heavy hot and loud.
- 7:05Exactly. Sounds like a jet engine taking off
- 7:07because it has to have a big separate graphics
- 7:09card in it. A discrete graphics card, usually
- 7:11from Nvidia or AMD. If you only had integrated
- 7:15graphics built into the main chip. We're stuck
- 7:17playing solitaire. Pretty much. But Panther Lake
- 7:20just shatters that entire assumption. How? What's
- 7:23the technology behind it? It's using Intel's
- 7:25new 18A process and this XE3 graphics architecture.
- 7:29Okay, hold on. 18A sounds like a parking spot.
- 7:31What does that actually mean? Good catch. So
- 7:3418A refers to the manufacturing process. The
- 7:37A stands for Angstrom. And without getting too
- 7:39deep in the physics... Instant. It just means
- 7:41that transistors are incredibly tiny and packed
- 7:43super, super densely. So more power in a smaller
- 7:46space with less heat. That's it. And that density
- 7:49let them fit a seriously powerful graphics engine
- 7:52right on the same chip as the CPU. And the performances?
- 7:56What? Shocking. I mean, truly. In tests, this
- 7:59one integrated chip is rivaling the NVIDIA RTX
- 8:024050. Wait, the 4050 is a real standalone graphics
- 8:06card that people buy. It is. And Intel is matching
- 8:09its performance without needing that separate
- 8:11power hungry component. It's wild. But I read
- 8:14there's a trip to it. Something about fake frames.
- 8:16Fake frames is maybe the cynical way to put it.
- 8:20The technical term is XSS, which stands for XC
- 8:23Super Sampling with frame generation. OK, explain
- 8:25that to me like I'm five or maybe like I'm 40
- 8:28and tired. OK. Imagine you're drawing a flip
- 8:31book. Instead of drawing every single page. You
- 8:34draw page 1 and page 3. Then you ask a really
- 8:38smart AI to look at those two pages and guess
- 8:41what page 2 should look like. And it draws it
- 8:43for you instantly. So the computer is basically
- 8:46hallucinating the frames in between. In a smart
- 8:48way, yes. It looks at the motion, it inserts
- 8:51a new frame, and the result is just buttery smoothness.
- 8:55Give me an example. Cyberpunk 2077. It's a notoriously
- 8:58tough game to run. On this chip, the frame rate
- 9:01went from a choppy, kind of unplayable 35 frames
- 9:05per second. To what? To over 90 frames per second.
- 9:07That is the difference between a slideshow and
- 9:09an actual video game. It really is. And, you
- 9:12know, some purists might complain that it's AI
- 9:14generation, but when your game looks that smooth
- 9:17on a thin and light laptop, nobody cares that
- 9:19the sausage gets made. So you can finally play
- 9:21real AAA games on a laptop that doesn't weigh
- 9:2410 pounds. Exactly. And it's beating AMD's competing
- 9:27chips in a lot of tests, too. It really democratizes
- 9:31high -end gaming. You don't need a $3 ,000 rig
- 9:33anymore. And that leads perfectly into our third
- 9:36story, because there's always been another catch
- 9:39with powerful Windows laptops. The unplugged
- 9:43catch. Right. The second you unplug that power
- 9:45hard, your supercomputer suddenly turns into
- 9:48a potato. It's been the curse of Windows laptops
- 9:53for a decade. The system just throttles performance
- 9:56way down to save battery life. But Panther Lake
- 9:59fixes this. This is the real aha moment. Yeah.
- 10:02This is what some are calling the mackification
- 10:04of Windows that we've all been waiting for. Wow.
- 10:07Comparing it to a Mac, that's high praise on
- 10:09the efficiency front. It's the only comparison
- 10:11that really matters there. And the data is just,
- 10:12look at this. They ran a handbrake video export
- 10:16test. This is a brutal test. Maxes out the processor.
- 10:19Okay. When they unplug the laptop, the performance
- 10:21only dropped by 3%. 3%. That's nothing. That's
- 10:25a rounding error. Exactly. On older Intel chips,
- 10:27you'd see a 30, maybe 40 % drop. You couldn't
- 10:30do real work away from an outlet. Now you can.
- 10:33So what about the battery life itself? If it's
- 10:35running at full speed, that must drain the tank
- 10:37pretty fast. You would think so, but because
- 10:39of that super -efficient 18A process, the battery
- 10:42stats are just absurd. Give me the numbers. The
- 10:45test unit, an Asus ZenBook Duo with a big battery,
- 10:48hit between 22 and 28 hours of continuous video
- 10:52playback. 28 hours. You could fly from here to
- 10:54Sydney and still have charge left over. You could
- 10:56binge an entire season of a show and not even
- 10:59think about a power outlet. For real -world productivity,
- 11:02web browsing, emails, you're easily getting over
- 11:0514 hours. It's a true all -day machine. This
- 11:08is just a MacBook killer. Killer is a strong
- 11:10word. Apple's M5 chip is still an absolute beast,
- 11:13but this is a big but. Panther Lake actually
- 11:15beat the M5 in some specific tasks. Like what?
- 11:19Like a 4k video export in Adobe Premiere. Oh,
- 11:22wow. That's Apple's home turf, creative professional
- 11:25work. It is. And now, if you're a Windows user,
- 11:28maybe you need certain software or you just prefer
- 11:30it, you don't have to look at your colleague's
- 11:32MacBook with battery envy anymore. You finally
- 11:34have parity. That's the word. That's huge for
- 11:38students, for remote workers, anyone tired of
- 11:41carrying a power brick around. Those days might
- 11:44actually be over. You can just trust your laptop
- 11:46to last. It really feels like Intel has finally
- 11:49connected the dots between raw power and real
- 11:52-world efficiency. It took them a while to catch
- 11:55up to what Apple was doing with their ARM architecture,
- 11:57but it looks like they've finally done it. It's
- 12:00a really exciting time to be in the market for
- 12:02a new laptop. Before we wrap up, I want to mention
- 12:05one more partner helping us make the show. Let's
- 12:07talk about Skony. If you're a golfer, or you're
- 12:10trying to be, you need to check out Skony. They're
- 12:13a premium golf shoe store. And premium is definitely
- 12:17the right word. These are not your grandpa's
- 12:19stiff old golf cleats. Not at all. They're stylish.
- 12:22They're incredibly comfortable. And they look
- 12:23just as good at the clubhouse bar as they do
- 12:26in the sand trap. Hopefully you're spending more
- 12:28time at the bar. That's always the goal. But
- 12:30seriously, Scony is also hooking our listeners
- 12:32up. You can use that same promo code SNARFUL.
- 12:35S -N -A -R -F -U -L. Use that at checkout for
- 12:3915 % off your entire purchase. You can find them
- 12:41over at scony .com. That's scony .com. Definitely
- 12:45worth a look if you want to upgrade your game
- 12:47or at least your style. So just to bring it all
- 12:49home then. Let's do a quick recap. What we saw
- 12:51today was a real maturation in the tech industry,
- 12:54I think. How do you mean? Well, look at the stories.
- 12:57On one side with the EU and XAI, you have society
- 13:02drawing a line in the sand. We're saying, OK,
- 13:04this tech is powerful, but there have to be rules.
- 13:07Right. It's the industry growing up. And then
- 13:09with Intel, it's a different kind of maturity.
- 13:12It's not just about being faster, hotter, louder
- 13:14anymore. It's about being smarter, cooler, more
- 13:17efficient. It's about refining the actual user
- 13:19experience, not just chasing raw numbers. That's
- 13:22a great way to put it. We're moving from more
- 13:24is better to better is better. Whether that's
- 13:26a safer online space or a laptop battery that
- 13:30actually lasts all day. Exactly. Well, I think
- 13:33that's the perfect place to leave it for this
- 13:36Monday morning. I agree. It's going to be a really
- 13:38interesting week watching how these stories develop.
- 13:41Absolutely. Thanks so much for tuning in. We
- 13:43hope you stay warm out there, especially if you're
- 13:45in that national free zone. We're here to help
- 13:47at SNARFL. So reach out on our website if you
- 13:50have any more questions. That's a wrap on today's
- 13:56top stories. Remember, tech doesn't have to be
- 13:59complicated, and we're here to help connect the
- 14:01dots. If you've got questions or want to learn
- 14:04more, visit us at snarful .com. Thanks for listening,
