- 0:19Did the animals know something you didn't?
- 0:21Could they feel the earthquake before it even happened?

- 0:54And welcome back to the Curious Kid cast, where we answer the
- 0:57questions that make your brain do backflips.
- 1:00Today's question comes from Oliver in San Pablo, CA Oliver
- 1:05wrote to us because his Guinea pig, Herbie, started doing laps
- 1:09around his cage right before a small earthquake hit their
- 1:12neighborhood. Oliver wants to know, can
- 1:16animals really sense earthquakes before they happen?
- 1:19And if so, how do they do it when we humans are just standing
- 1:22there like confused statues? Great question, Oliver, and
- 1:27honestly, Herbie sounds like he might be part superhero.
- 1:31Let's find out what's going on. All right, so here's the thing.
- 1:34Throughout history, people have noticed animals acting
- 1:37absolutely bonkers right before earthquakes hit.
- 1:39And I'm not talking about your typical dog chasing its tail
- 1:42bonkers. I'm talking about serious weird
- 1:45stuff. Back in 1975 in China, snakes
- 1:50crawled out of their cosy hibernation spots in the middle
- 1:53of winter. Now if you know anything about
- 1:56snakes, they hate being cold. They're basically living heating
- 1:59pads that prefer staying warm and sleepy.
- 2:01But these snakes were like, Nope, we're out of here.
- 2:04Even though it was freezing outside, dogs bark non-stop,
- 2:08cats disappeared. And because people noticed all
- 2:11this strange behaviour, they evacuated the city of Hi Cheng.
- 2:15Guess what happened next? A massive earthquake hit.
- 2:18Thousands of lives were saved because people paid attention to
- 2:22the animals. Then in 2004, before that huge
- 2:26earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia, elephants started
- 2:29moving to higher ground. Dogs ran inland.
- 2:32Even chickens, Chickens. You guys were acting nervous.
- 2:37Chickens are not known for their intelligence.
- 2:39So when even they're freaking out, something big is definitely
- 2:43going on. And it's not just wild animals
- 2:47or farm animals. Regular pets do this too.
- 2:50Dogs pace around the house like they're training for a marathon.
- 2:53Cats hide under beds and refuse to come out even for tuna fish
- 2:57swim in crazy patterns. It's like they all got the same
- 3:00secret memo that says danger incoming, act weird immediately.
- 3:06So the big question is how? How do animals know something's
- 3:10coming when we humans are completely clueless?
- 3:14Well, scientists have a few theories, and they're all pretty
- 3:17cool. Before a big earthquake hits,
- 3:20the earth sometimes gives off tiny little shakes called 4
- 3:24shocks. They're so small that humans
- 3:26usually can't feel them. But animals?
- 3:29Oh, they can feel them all right.
- 3:31Dogs and cats have super sensitive ears and paws.
- 3:34Elephants feel vibrations through their massive feet.
- 3:38It's kind of like how you can feel someone stomping on the
- 3:41floor from far away. Except animals are feeling the
- 3:44earth doing tiny stomps that we completely miss.
- 3:48Imagine if you had elephant feet.
- 3:50Actually don't imagine that too hard because that would be
- 3:53really weird at school, but you get the idea.
- 3:56Animals are basically walking around with built in earthquake
- 3:59detectors in their paws. OK, this one sounds like science
- 4:03fiction, but it's real. The Earth has a natural magnetic
- 4:07field, kind of like a giant invisible force field around the
- 4:11planet. Birds and fish use this magnetic
- 4:14field to navigate, which is already pretty amazing if you
- 4:17think about it. Now, when rocks deep underground
- 4:21start pressing against each other before an earthquake, they
- 4:24can change this magnetic field slightly.
- 4:27And some scientists think birds and fish might notice these
- 4:30changes. It's like the Earth is sending
- 4:33out a secret warning signal and animals are the only ones with
- 4:37the special decoder glasses to read it.
- 4:40Meanwhile, we humans are just walking around going what a nice
- 4:43day while the Earth is basically screaming something's about to
- 4:46go down. Here's a gross but fascinating
- 4:49fact. When rocks shift underground,
- 4:52they can release gases like radon.
- 4:54Humans can't smell these gases at all.
- 4:57But dogs? Dogs can smell everything.
- 5:00Seriously, have you seen a dog's nose?
- 5:02It's like a super powered smell machine.
- 5:06Some insects and reptiles can detect these chemicals too.
- 5:09So if the air or soil starts smelling weird, animals might
- 5:13get nervous and decide to leave the area.
- 5:16They don't know why they're nervous, they just know
- 5:18something feels wrong. It's like when you walk into a
- 5:21room and it just feels creepy. Except for animals, it's their
- 5:24nose telling them to get out of there.
- 5:27Scientists have tried testing all this stuff in labs and let
- 5:30me tell you, trying to recreate an earthquake in a laboratory is
- 5:34not easy. You can't just start shaking
- 5:37everything and yelling earthquake.
- 5:40Well, you could, but that wouldn't be very scientific.
- 5:44They've tested rats and mice by creating tiny vibrations.
- 5:48The little guys freeze or run when they feel them, which shows
- 5:51they're super sensitive to ground movement.
- 5:53Lizards and frogs react to changes in humidity and
- 5:56vibrations too. Birds can detect low frequency
- 5:59vibrations in infrasound, which is basically sounds so low that
- 6:03humans can't hear it. But here's the tricky part.
- 6:07Real earthquakes are messy. They involve vibrations,
- 6:12chemical changes, magnetic field shifts, and probably a bunch of
- 6:15other stuff all happening at once.

- 6:35I mentioned they left their Burrows days before the
- 6:37earthquake days. That's not just coincidence.
- 6:40They probably felt tiny vibrations underground or
- 6:43smelled gases escaping from the soil.
- 6:46Either way, those snakes were like peace out earth.

- 6:52Elephants in Thailand have been known to move to higher ground
- 6:56before earthquakes. These giant animals weighing
- 6:59thousands of pounds just suddenly decide to go for a hike
- 7:02to higher elevation. Maybe they sense vibrations
- 7:06through their feet or detect changes in air pressure.
- 7:09Whatever it is, elephants clearly know something we don't.
- 7:14And then there are regular house pets.
- 7:15So many people report their dogs barking or pacing for hours
- 7:18before even a small tremor. Cats leave their favorite
- 7:21sleeping spots and hide in weird places, like inside washing
- 7:24machines or behind toilets, because apparently, when
- 7:27danger's coming, the bathroom seems like the safest place to a
- 7:30cat. You might be wondering, why are
- 7:34humans so bad at this? We're supposed to be the smart
- 7:38ones, right? Well, here's the thing.
- 7:41Humans can definitely feel earthquakes once they happen,
- 7:44but before they happen, the signs are just too subtle for
- 7:47us. Those tiny vibrations, too small
- 7:50for our feet to feel, especially when we're wearing shoes.
- 7:54Changes in magnetic fields invisible to us.
- 7:57We don't have magnetic sensors in our heads.
- 8:00And those underground gases? We can't smell them.
- 8:03Animals are just built differently.
- 8:05Their senses are sharper, their instincts are quicker, and their
- 8:08brains are tuned to notice even the smallest signs of danger.
- 8:12Meanwhile, human brains are busy thinking about what's for lunch
- 8:16or why our shoelaces keep coming united.

- 8:22detectors and humans are walking around with regular old human
- 8:26bodies that are pretty good at thinking and talking, but not so
- 8:29great at sensing tiny earth vibrations.
- 8:33So here's where it gets really interesting.
- 8:35Some scientists are wondering if we could use animals as
- 8:38earthquake early warning systems.
- 8:41Researchers are actually tracking cows and dogs with GPS
- 8:44collars and accelerometers. That's right, farm animals
- 8:48wearing high tech tracking devices.
- 8:51If the animals start moving unusually, it might signal that
- 8:55seismic activity is coming. Imagine getting an alert on your
- 9:00phone that says warning. 17 cows just ran to the other side of

- 9:10That would be pretty useful, right?
- 9:13Scientists could combine animal behaviour with their regular

- 9:24animals and technology work together.
- 9:27Now, it's not perfect, yet animals sometimes act weird for
- 9:31totally normal reasons. Maybe there's a storm coming,
- 9:34maybe they heard a loud noise, maybe they're just bored and
- 9:37want attention. But combined with technology,
- 9:40their behaviour could give humans a helpful head start.
- 9:43Even if animals can't perfectly predict every earthquake, we can
- 9:47still learn some pretty important lessons from them.

- 10:24Earthquakes show us how animals, humans, and the planet are all
- 10:28linked together in this big, complicated web.
- 10:31We're all part of the same system, even if we don't always
- 10:34realize it. OK, close your eyes for a
- 10:37second. Actually, maybe don't close them
- 10:39if you're walking or riding a bike while listening to this.
- 10:41But imagine you're a dog or a cat.
- 10:44You feel a tiny rumble under your paws.
- 10:47It's so small that the humans around you don't notice
- 10:50anything, but to you it feels like something big is coming.
- 10:53The air smells different, kind of chemically and weird.
- 10:58Your senses are screaming something is wrong, danger is
- 11:01coming. So you run.
- 11:03You hide, you bark to warn others.
- 11:06The humans think you're just being weird, but your instincts
- 11:09just gave you a head start on survival.
- 11:12That's how animals might experience the world differently
- 11:14than we do, and maybe that's why they can sense earthquakes
- 11:17before we can. All right, curious kids, it's
