- 0:57I'm Jay Lauren Norris with Leading Leaders Podcast.
- 1:01I remember rolling up probably close to 2:00 in the morning,
- 1:07knocked on the door, no response for a couple of minutes, knocked
- 1:11on the door again, no response for a couple of minutes.
- 1:14And then finally, Colonel Bjork's wife, the Wing
- 1:18Commander. She opens the door and looks at
- 1:23us like we were Martians. Big green fire truck lights
- 1:29flashing, all of us standing there with our fire suits on,
- 1:33air packs on, two of us with masks on, ready to enter.
- 1:38And she asked that existential question that most people are
- 1:42not ready for. Why are you here?
- 1:48We thought it was pretty clear. The flashing lights might have
- 1:51been a clue. The yellow suits, the helmets,
- 1:54the air packs, that might have been a clue.
- 1:57The fact that we showed up at your house at 2:00 in the
- 1:59morning when there's no smoke and there's no fire, I can
- 2:03understand how that might be a bit confusing.
- 2:06I see. The reality is most people don't
- 2:10know when they've already succumbed to CO2.
- 2:15You know when you turn on the furnace for the first time and
- 2:18you don't know it's got a bit of a gas leak?
- 2:20Most people have nowadays, this was in the 90s.
- 2:24Most people nowadays when they build a new house, it has smoke
- 2:27detectors, ionization detectors, heat detectors and CO2 detectors
- 2:32so that you know if carbon monoxide is going to knock you
- 2:35out because for the most part, it's odorless and tasteless and
- 2:40you just feel like you're getting drowsy.
- 2:42And then you take a very, very, very, very, very long nap.
- 2:47But back in the day, rather than putting those alarms in the
- 2:50house, they would connect the CO2 detectors back to the fire
- 2:54department. And so in the form of a 911
- 2:58silent alert, we would get an alert that one of the executive
- 3:01officers had a problem in his house, and we would roll up to
- 3:07make sure that they weren't asleep unwillingly.
- 3:11And we did at 2:00 in the morning.
- 3:14And I can certainly understand her confusion.
- 3:17I didn't call 911. There's no flames coming from my
- 3:20house. There's no smoke in my house.
- 3:21We are not on fire. Why are you here?
- 3:26Valid question. Now, what if we took that
- 3:29question completely out of the context of that scene?
- 3:32And I said to you, why are you here?
- 3:37Is that a vocational question? Is that a relationship question?
- 3:43Is that a life meaning question? For a long time and I still have
- 3:51some of the business cards on the back of them.
- 3:53It says the toughest leadership question I've ever asked or been
- 3:57asked. What do you want?
- 4:01There's no phrase that says you have not because you ask not,
- 4:05but what do you want? This is not just a what do you
- 4:10want for dinner question, which if you've ever been married for
- 4:13any period of time, I've got 32 years under my belt almost.
- 4:19If you've been married for any period of time, you know that
- 4:21question well, it doesn't really have an answer.
- 4:24What do you want for dinner? What do you want to eat?
- 4:26Where do you want to go? That could go on for hours.
- 4:30In fact, sometimes I'll set it up and I'll say I've got to go
- 4:32do these five tasks when I get back.
- 4:35I'm hoping in the time that I'm doing that you're pondering
- 4:37where we're going for dinner. And I don't really care because
- 4:40I just like to eat. So pick what you want and still
- 4:44what do you want Seems like the impossible question.
- 4:50Let me just tell you this, the answer to what do you want is
- 4:52never the Impossible Burger. I'm just my opinion.
- 4:56That is not a valid answer to what do you want?
- 4:59Well, what do you want in the way of success?
- 5:02What do you want your relationships to look like?
- 5:04What do you want out of your life or your career?
- 5:07What do you want in the next 5 minutes?
- 5:09What do you want in the next 5 years?
- 5:12That That's a pretty valid question, and it's one that I
- 5:15find most people have a real hard time answering.
- 5:18Now here's the real challenge with not being able to answer
- 5:21that question. If you don't know what you want,
- 5:24you're not likely to get it. I don't care if you'll believe
- 5:29in the law of attraction or the God of the universe.
- 5:31If you don't know what you want, it ain't coming.
- 5:36Try it. Just go to any restaurant, go to
- 5:38any bookstore, go to any retail shop.
- 5:40Walk in and look at the cashier and just stand there.
- 5:45Don't tell them what you want, don't tell them what you're
- 5:47looking for. Don't tell them what the problem
- 5:49you have to to solve. Just wait and see what they give
- 5:53you. My guess is going to be an
- 5:56escort to the door or help finding someplace else to sleep
- 5:59for a few days. You can't just walk through life
- 6:03not knowing what you want, but what you want.
- 6:06Why are you here? These are these are powerful
- 6:08questions that I'm afraid very few people wrestle with.
- 6:13They don't spend time thinking about what do I want?
- 6:17And then if you're a person of faith, you have another question
- 6:20that follows that. And that is not just what do I
- 6:23want, but what does the maker want of me?
- 6:27What do you want from me? What do you want me to do?
- 6:30What am I supposed to do about it?
- 6:32It was a song a few years back. Was it Chris Tomlin or West?
- 6:38It's one of those two. I'm trying to remember, is it
- 6:41Michael West or was it Chris Tomlin that that wrote the song
- 6:46I made you? And the question of the song
- 6:50was, what are you going to do about it?
- 6:53And the answer came back, well, I made you.
- 6:56I made you capable of fixing that problem.
- 6:59I made you willing to fix that problem.
- 7:02I made you and I empowered you to solve that problem.
- 7:06I've been working with a client recently.
- 7:09Last night he kind of shared his modified version of this.
- 7:14And what he does, he, he's an expert in the area of protocols
- 7:18and systems and trying to figure out how to make that a very
- 7:22relatable concept came down to the conclusion that, you know,
- 7:27sometimes it's the unspoken protocol that rules everything.
- 7:33And the question of do you ask the boss to solve a problem
- 7:37you're capable of solving? Well, that ought to be an
- 7:41unspoken protocol in everybody's business.
- 7:43If you can fix it, what are you waiting for?
- 7:46If there's a problem to be solved and you have the ability,
- 7:50the talent, the skill, the resources, don't wait for
- 7:53somebody else to tell you to do it.
- 7:55Just get it done. That should be operating
- 7:58protocol in every environment. It it's not, in fact, the song,
- 8:02ask that questions. What about this?
- 8:04What about the homeless? What about the sick?
- 8:05What about the dying? What about the widows?
- 8:07What about the orphans? What are you going to do about
- 8:09that? Captain Creator?
- 8:11You put all this on Earth and you've done nothing to fix any
- 8:14of that. And he said, oh, I did
- 8:15something. I made you, and I made you
- 8:20capable. And while you may not be
- 8:24responsible for the problem, you hold the key to the solution.
- 8:28So let's go back to that very first question.
- 8:30Why are you here? If you've never wrestled with
- 8:35that question, you might want to hit pause and whatever else
- 8:40you're trying to do in your life and spend a minute asking that
- 8:44question until you at least feel like you've justified pondering
- 8:49it. I don't mean write it down on a
- 8:52piece of paper and forget you wrote it down.
- 8:54I don't mean write it down and ask someone else and then
- 8:57whatever their answer is, that's acceptable.
- 9:00No, I I mean I want you to sit with that question for a minute.
- 9:03Why are you here? Is there a purpose?
- 9:10Is there an assignment? Is it an appointment?
- 9:14I mean, I remember the first time my blood sugar crashed and
- 9:21I didn't know that's what it was.
- 9:24I and taking my insulin I drove to a job interview and on my way
- 9:28to the job interview I remember being so confused.
- 9:32I was literally looking at the gear shift in my Jeep going is
- 9:35that in one or three? Because I don't know if I need
- 9:40to go to 2 or 4. And simultaneously having to
- 9:43cognitively consciously focus on the position of the gear shift,
- 9:48when to push in the clutch, how to change lanes.
- 9:51I've been driving for 25 years. This is not a new thing for me,
- 9:55but I'm having to focus cognitive willpower to shift the
- 10:00gears, change the lanes. When I walked into the building,
- 10:04I did have that to the retailer kind of look.
- 10:07Walked up to the reception and I just stood there for a minute
- 10:09and they're like, why are you here?
- 10:12Yes, I have an appointment. Great.
- 10:17Who's it with? Well, he used to be my boss, and
- 10:22now he's potentially going to be my boss again.
- 10:24And they're like, that doesn't help me.
- 10:26There's like 250 people in this building.
- 10:29Oh, So why are you here? Well, I have AI, Have AI have an
- 10:33appointment. What kind of appointment is it?
- 10:36It's a job interview. Oh, OK, OK.
- 10:38Yeah. So there are only three managers
- 10:39doing interviews today. Is it this one, this one, or
- 10:41this one? I was like, Yep, that one.
- 10:44And in that state of mind, I went into my interview.
- 10:46But I wouldn't have got past the door if I didn't have an
- 10:49appointment. If I didn't have an assignment,
- 10:52if there wasn't some very specific reason for me to be
- 10:55there, security would have never let me pass the door.
- 10:58I'm sure they had their suspicions when they did let me
- 11:02pass the door. That interview was a train
- 11:05wreck. And fortunately the guy who was
- 11:08hiring me said, look, I've you've worked for me before, so
- 11:11I know this is not your normal state of mind.
- 11:13I know how your mind works and this ain't it.
- 11:15You need to go see your doctor though, and then you can get
- 11:18started next week. And that was when I realized
- 11:21that the brain does not function with a blood sugar of 25, that
- 11:26it doesn't do that well at all. And so now when I start feeling
- 11:29that blood sugar crash, I've picked up on some of the signs
- 11:32and symptoms that are preludes to that state of mind.
- 11:37And I take action because I don't want to be in that place
- 11:41where somebody's going. Why are you here?
- 11:42And I can't answer that question, but I, I suspect there
- 11:45are people watching right now, listening right now to this very
- 11:48podcast and they've never pondered the question deep at
- 11:52heart to say, why am I here now? I want to tell you there were,
- 11:57there were a couple of podcast interviews that I've heard
- 12:00recently and both of them in the last two weeks.
- 12:03On one of them, I don't remember, it was the guest or
- 12:06the host that asked the question, but the question they
- 12:09asked was what if my dreams don't fulfill me?
- 12:17What if my dreams don't fulfill me?
- 12:22And the first thing that started going through my mind was with
- 12:25all the reading and writing that I've done around the idea of
- 12:27purpose and calling an assignment and anointing and
- 12:29appointing. What I realized is there a whole
- 12:31lot of people that have this grand confusion about purpose
- 12:36that causes them to feel like life is supposed to bring
- 12:41meaning to them, not that they're supposed to bring
- 12:43meaning to life. That somehow the universe is
- 12:47supposed to bend its will of existence to make sure that when
- 12:52they get on this planet and then ultimately leave this planet or
- 12:56come back as some other entity, however you want to view that.
- 12:59That while they're here, it is the job of the universe to
- 13:01ensure that they are happy, pleased, fulfilled, satisfied,
- 13:08that all of the universe is conspiring to make them pleased.
- 13:15There was a T-shirt that went around in the late 80s, early
- 13:1790s that says 2 things you must know there is a God.
- 13:21You're not him. This doesn't have to be a
- 13:25religious argument, but I do have to ask the question, at
- 13:28what point do your dreams fulfilling you not make you the
- 13:32center of the universe? If your dreams and your visions
- 13:35were designed to make you happy, if the purpose of dreams and
- 13:41visions was to please and satisfy you, wouldn't that mean
- 13:45that all of the universe is subject to you and and what if?
- 13:50What if your desires today are different than they were
- 13:53yesterday? What if your desires 2 weeks
- 13:55from now, two months from now, are different than there are
- 13:57today? What if, like, a toddler who
- 14:02insists on cupcakes for breakfast every day?
- 14:06As a parent, the universe says, yeah, that's not a good idea.
- 14:11I mean, you could bend to the will of your toddler and feed
- 14:13them cupcakes every day. Get ready for a big dentist,
- 14:16bill. And perhaps, you know, some
- 14:18blood sugar problems in their teens and some obesity problems
- 14:21and some mental clarity problems and some mental fog problems and
- 14:25maybe even some mental illness or heart disease problems by the
- 14:28time they're 25. Because cupcakes for breakfast
- 14:30every day is not a good plan for your body.
- 14:32But if you bend the will of the universe to your desires, what's
- 14:38the difference? Are your dreams designed to
- 14:42fulfill you, or are you designed to fulfill your dreams?
- 14:48I mean, dreams and visions, where do they come from?
- 14:51Is that imagination or is that intuition?
- 14:55Well, what if? What if your dreams and your
- 15:00visions were whispers from beyond calling you to your
- 15:07assignment? What if your appointment was
- 15:13sent to you? Like those little text messages
- 15:15that I get from the VA? When it's time for me to see my
- 15:17doctor again, I get a text that says you have an appointment at
- 15:23this clinic On this date at this time.
- 15:25Click YES to confirm and no to be removed from our system.
- 15:29Hold up. That's a drastic contrast.
- 15:32But what if I just want to reschedule?
- 15:36Is that not an option? I mean, I want the appointment,
- 15:39but Sunday at 3:00 AM is not good for me.
- 15:43Can I, can I move it? I mean, I hate to be this blunt,
- 15:47that there are times in your life when the assignment, the
- 15:49appointment, the thing you're needed for is more like a
- 15:52Mission Impossible kind of an assignment.
- 15:54All right, stop the car, put it in a parking space, walk across
- 16:00that empty field. Why in the world would I do
- 16:03that? That's not on my agenda.
- 16:05I never read a book that said stop the car and walk across the
- 16:08field. There's nothing in AI that tells
- 16:11me that's a good idea. Why would I?
- 16:12Why in the world would I do that?
- 16:15And the challenge is sometimes the Whisperer doesn't ask for
- 16:19your opinion. The Whisperer knows something
- 16:21you don't know. I love the way Michael Junior
- 16:24says it. He says sometimes you're stopped
- 16:27at a red light and something tells you don't go.
- 16:31Something has a name, and if you know that name, you know you
- 16:35should listen to something. Something told me don't go.
- 16:37Something told me, get out of the car and walk across this
- 16:40empty field. Something told me, just walk
- 16:42away from this argument. Something told me get out of
- 16:45Dairy Queen now that something told my grandmother, get out of
- 16:49Luby's on the day that a driver drove through the front wall of
- 16:54of Luby's and began shooting people in their seats.
- 16:59One of the first mass casualty events in Central Texas.
- 17:04This was way back 80s, early 90s.
- 17:07I think it was early 90s because I was on active duty at the
- 17:09time. Something told her get out.
- 17:13Something gave her an appointment, an assignment for
- 17:16the moment. These are not always lifelong
- 17:19appointments, but there's a word that you need to know in
- 17:24association with appointment directly related to assignment.
- 17:30If you're told to do something, most often a parent doesn't look
- 17:36at a 2 year old ago, hey, go move the car down the road a
- 17:39block. Why?
- 17:41Because they're not capable, they don't have the wherewithal,
- 17:44they can't even reach the steering wheel, much less the
- 17:46steering wheel and the pedals at the same time.
- 17:48And even if they have somehow figured out how to turn on the
- 17:51car, push the button, take the proper key with them, even if
- 17:54they had all that going on, the likelihood that they can
- 17:57actually navigate pushing the brake and getting it into gear
- 17:59and then managing the steering wheel, that's a tall stretch for
- 18:03a 2 year old. Now maybe if they're 10.
- 18:06I drove cars when I was 10. I drove farm tractors when I was
- 18:088 or 9. So no big surprise, right?
- 18:11You can reach all the pedals and almost see over the windshield
- 18:13at that point. Great, but I wouldn't ask my
- 18:17child to do what I know my child is incapable of.
- 18:22I have, on the other hand, challenged my team, my
- 18:26employees, my children, my peers even, to do that thing that in
- 18:32their mind is just outside their reach of capability because I
- 18:37see potential in them they have not yet experienced.
- 18:40I know that they're empowered. They have the authority, they
- 18:42have the skill set, they have the ability.
- 18:46They just don't know that they can yet.
- 18:50And sometimes my job as a coach, as a leader, is to push them off
- 18:54the edge so that they can learn to fly in.
- 18:57Sometimes you'll get assignments from the whisper, from something
- 19:03to do what you have never done before and in your book it makes
- 19:08no sense at all. Something said leave rubies.
- 19:15I that's not in my book. I can't find anything that says
- 19:19don't be in rubies on this day. But something new was about to
- 19:22happen. Something changed my plan,
- 19:24something changed my direction. Something changed my engagement.
- 19:27Something changed my appointment by changing my assignment
- 19:33because something new. I was empowered to do that.
- 19:36Now that empowered word, there's another word for that.
- 19:38And in the world of Christianese, we call that the
- 19:40anointing. Now, let me tell you something
- 19:43about the anointing because it's a lot like an assignment or an
- 19:45appointment. They work together.
- 19:47They are not the same thing. These words are not
- 19:48interchangeable, but they are directly related.
- 19:51Then when it comes to leadership, you better know
- 19:54because anointing, empowerment and authority are also light
- 20:00teeth on a comb. They are not the same thing.
- 20:02They are not the same tooth, but they don't work well alone.
- 20:07If your comb has one tooth on it, your hair is going to be a
- 20:10mess. You might as well use a
- 20:11dinglehopper. If you don't know what a
- 20:13dinglehopper is, go back and watch the Disney's 90 version of
- 20:16Little Mermaid or just YouTube it.
- 20:21But if your tooth in your comb is anointing, let me tell you
- 20:26what that means. That means it might be only for
- 20:30this assignment, for this appointment, that you've been
- 20:34given a special gifted opportunity, ability, charisma.
- 20:40You got the right rizz for this moment, not for a lifetime.
- 20:47I know that's not what everybody wants to hear.
- 20:50There are times that for the exact precise appointment or
- 20:54assignment you have been given a special just for that moment
- 21:00that that strength when grandma had to pick up the car.
- 21:03You've seen the videos. The car has an accident falls on
- 21:06top of her child on the bicycle and she sees that car on top of
- 21:11her grandchild and she lifts the car off the grandchild and
- 21:13everybody's looking at her going, what is that super
- 21:16grandma? Where did that come from?
- 21:18In that moment, there was a special kind of that gave her
- 21:23their ability to do what she could never do before and
- 21:26probably has never even attempted to do since.
- 21:29But in that moment, there was an assignment, there was an
- 21:31appointment, and for that appointment there was an
- 21:33anointing. That's one version of the
- 21:35anointing. There was a declaration made
- 21:39several 100 years ago, maybe thousands by now.
- 21:43A guy by the name of Isaiah said, this is what I've been
- 21:47told to do and I've been given the authority, one of those
- 21:52tooth Combs and the anointing one of those tooth Combs and the
- 21:56empowerment, one of those tooth Combs to pull it off.
- 21:59And what I've been told to do is set the captive free.
- 22:02Yep. Like let him out of prison.
- 22:04For the ones that can't see, give them back their eyesight.
- 22:07The ones that can't hear, give them back their hearing.
- 22:09The ones that are lame, they can't walk, get up.
- 22:12I I've been given the assignment to do those things.
- 22:16I've been given the appointment. I'm supposed to be here for that
- 22:19purpose. Why are you here for this?
- 22:24That was the answer to that question.
- 22:27But see that if your dreams, the whisper, the assignment, the
- 22:32text message, if your visions, the thing that you see coming
- 22:37before you get there, that premonition, that prophetic
- 22:41utterance, whatever label you want to put on it, that I can
- 22:44see my business operating like this, making this kind of money,
- 22:47making this kind of changes, bringing impact to the world
- 22:49like this. If you don't have that, you
- 22:52don't know what you want. If you know what you want, you
- 22:57better ask this question. Is that what I want?
- 23:00Is that what the whisper wants for me?
- 23:03Because if it's what I want, then I'm also responsible for
- 23:05funding it. Yeah.
- 23:08Hold on to your britches for that one.
- 23:11And if I'm responsible for it because it's what I want and I
- 23:14have to fund it, then I also have to get everybody else to
- 23:17agree. A lot of people I've never met,
- 23:20never had relationships with, have to come into agreement with
- 23:23me to be able to move this forward.
- 23:24You ever try to collaborate with someone who does not see your
- 23:26vision? Good luck with that.
- 23:30Here's the irony though. When you're operating in your
- 23:33assignment, when you've showed up for your appointment, when
- 23:37that assignment has come with the whisper that says, let me
- 23:42show you what it's going to look like when it's done.
- 23:44Let me put a little something inside of you, a little
- 23:46motivation that says, I've called you to do this.
- 23:53Then suddenly Seth Godin comes into play and a little memory
- 23:56and he says, you know, people like us, we do work like this.
- 24:00And all of a sudden out of nowhere, people who heard the
- 24:04same whisper show up and like, oh, you were the other person
- 24:10told to the do what I'm doing. Let's do it together.
- 24:12Let's lighten the load. Let's not be 1 ox trying to pull
- 24:16this yoke. Let's be a team.
- 24:20And ironically, when that happens, when that whisper gives
- 24:25you the anointing, the appointing, the assignment, the
- 24:27direction, the vision, the dream, when it all begins to
- 24:30come together, here's what you don't have.
- 24:32You don't have a whole lot of people, for lack of a better
- 24:34term, in a piss and match trying to figure out who's going to be
- 24:36the famous one, who's going to be in charge.
- 24:39No, they all seem to step together and they all know their
- 24:42assignment within the assignment.
- 24:45They show up for the appointment on time, energized, ready to
- 24:49work and they know their task. We've been working in the AV
- 24:54world for right at 25 years and in that time my kids have grown
- 25:00up from toddler age knowing the difference between an extension
- 25:05cord, an XLR cord, 1/4 inch cable and a DMX cord.
- 25:09To this day I work with people that I'll say I need you to run
- 25:13that speaker wire and they don't know which wire to run from the
- 25:16speaker to the mixer. My kids have most of their life
- 25:21knowing that difference, which also means at the end of the
- 25:24day, when we start to tear things down, they know when I
- 25:29pull speaker cords, I don't care if they're 10 feet long or 150
- 25:32feet long. When we get them back here,
- 25:35they're rolled up in a specific way.
- 25:36They're laid in a certain pile. And you know what I don't have
- 25:38to do? I don't have to tell them what
- 25:42to do. They know in setup and tear down
- 25:45there are things that I do because the equipment is
- 25:48expensive and if it gets broke, I don't want anybody to have to
- 25:52be blamed for that but me. So I do that.
- 25:55That's my job, that's my role, that's my responsibility.
- 25:58They also know if the customer shows up and has questions or
- 26:02potential future customer shows up and have has questions, no
- 26:07one else on the team can do that like I do that.
- 26:10So I will step out of my role and of the people on my team
- 26:15without a word spoken. They know who steps into that
- 26:18role. Now, if in your organization, if
- 26:21your dreams and your visions are here to fulfill you and you
- 26:24don't know, am I appointed for that?
- 26:25Am I anointed for that? Am I called to that?
- 26:28You need to get with your team lead.
- 26:29You need to get together with someone who knows what your
- 26:32assignment is so they can clarify your role, your
- 26:35capacity, and maybe even stretch you into something you didn't
- 26:38know you were capable of yet. And let me go right back to the
- 26:43very beginning. If I ask you the question, why
- 26:47are you here? It might be in your current
- 26:51capacity as a firefighter that 2:00 in the morning standing on
- 26:55the doorstep. Why are you here?
- 26:57A very specific reason for that. Why are you here on this base?
- 27:00Well, this is my duty assignment.
- 27:02I don't have a choice. Why are you here in uniform?
- 27:05This is part of the job. This is how we show up because
- 27:08people like us do work like this.
- 27:12If you're not asking and answering the layers of that
- 27:14question, chances are when it comes time for you to show up
- 27:17for your appointment, you're going to be late.
- 27:23Listen, when I work with communicators, you would be
- 27:26amazed how many people, they feel like they have a story to
- 27:29tell, but the story that they want to tell is outside of their
- 27:34appointment. It's not what they were sent
- 27:37here to talk about. They've abandoned the whisper.
- 27:40They're waiting for their dreams to fulfill them.
- 27:42They're waiting for the universe to bend its will to make them
- 27:44happy and pleased and satisfied. And when I work with my clients
- 27:48one-on-one, we keep asking that question, even if it's never
- 27:52spoken directly. Why are you here?
- 27:57What are you supposed to accomplish?
- 27:59Who are you supposed to help? How are you going to help them?
- 28:02What problem are they suffering with that you're going to help
- 28:05to solve? See all of these questions?
- 28:07Go right back into the story power process.
- 28:10You've got to find the stories, select them and qualify them.
- 28:14Craft those stories to be poignant and powerful as you
- 28:17deliver them. You've got to connect them with
- 28:19the people who need your help. And you've got to figure out
- 28:22what is the meta narrative? What's another way of asking
- 28:24what the meta narrative is? Why are you here?
- 28:29The minute you realize that you're here to fulfill dreams
- 28:33and visions and destiny, that there's something you're
- 28:36supposed to be living out, the stories that you tell are going
- 28:41to change. The way you tell them is going
- 28:44to change and lives around you are going to change.
- 28:49So if you're brave enough, right there in the comments, answer
- 28:53the question, why are you here? I'm Jay Lorne Norris with
- 28:57Leading Leaders podcast for Tell It Like It Is TV.

- 30:23I can also tell you that my clients who get the greatest
- 30:26success are the ones who apply the Story Power process to their
- 30:30business development to increase their impact, their influence,
- 30:33and their income. Now, the Story Power process
- 30:36includes story mining, story selection, story qualification,
- 30:40story crafting, connecting with your audience, and leading the
- 30:44narrative. And if you leave any one of
- 30:46those parts out, you're going to find that or you're just not as
- 30:49effective as you want to be. You're not going to grow your
- 30:51business to the same level. You're not going to lead with
- 30:54impact and influence like you hoped to.
- 30:57I can also tell you that the people who apply these things,
- 31:00well, they're not failing in their business.
- 31:03The reason a lot of people fail in their business is they
- 31:07continue to fail to connect the solution they offer with the
- 31:11problem that their clients have. The pain in the solution never
- 31:14come together. And a lot of that failure is
- 31:17because they're not clearly articulating how their solution
- 31:23solves someone else's problem. It comes down to a question,
- 31:27something like this. Who do you help and how?
- 31:30Yes, that's one of the first things we're going to discuss
- 31:33over the next six weeks of Boost Your Business with Story Power.
