- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:18And I'm Morgan. It is Friday, September 26, 2025.
- 0:21Thanks for tuning in as we connect some dots
- 0:23for you. Happy Friday. We've got quite a mix
- 0:25today, phones, hobbyist computers, and, uh...
- 0:29Ants. Ha, yes, quite the journey ahead. But first,
- 0:32let's get you set up. Here in Sacramento, looking
- 0:35like a sunny one today, high of 94. Pretty standard
- 0:38late September for us. Classy Sacramento. Nationally,
- 0:41though, things are a bit more active. Keep an
- 0:42eye on the southwest and southeast, potential
- 0:45for heavy rain, maybe some flash flooding. And
- 0:47that tropical wave, AL 94, is looking more likely
- 0:51to develop. Could attack the southeast U .S.,
- 0:52but the track's still a bit fuzzy, you know.
- 0:54Definitely one to watch. Yeah. Okay, quick market
- 0:56check from yesterday's close. Let's do it. Dow
- 0:58Jones finished up just a bit, plus about 37 points,
- 1:01so plus 0 .08%. But looking at the week, it's
- 1:05down slightly, neck and 8 .15 % since Monday.
- 1:08Same story for the S &P 500. A little yesterday,
- 1:11plus 9 points, or plus 0 .14%, but still down
- 1:14negative 0 .45 % for the week overall. Seems
- 1:17like some hesitation out there. Yeah, and Bitcoin
- 1:20saw a small bump yesterday, up about 200 bucks,
- 1:23plus 0 .19%. But it's had a rougher week, down
- 1:26over 3 % since Monday. Some volatility there.
- 1:30And any Giants news? Ah, nope. No game yesterday,
- 1:34September 25th. Bit of a bummer, but hopefully
- 1:37they'll get back at it soon. Always next game.
- 1:40Alright, before we dive into the main stories,
- 1:42let's thank one of our sponsors. Absolutely.
- 1:44This part of the show is brought to you by Pins
- 1:46and Aces. That's Pins and Aces. They make really
- 1:49top -notch premium golf apparel and accessories.

- 1:54course or, you know, wherever. Exactly. And they've
- 1:57got a great deal for you. Use our promo code
- 1:59SNARFUL. That's S -N -A -R -F -U -L. Pronounced
- 2:01SNARFUL at checkout. And what does that get you?
- 2:04It gets you 21 % off your entire purchase. Pretty
- 2:06sweet deal. 21%. Nice. Just head over to pinsandaces
- 2:09.com. That's pinsandaces .com. Code SNARFUL.
- 2:14Alright, good deal. Now let's get into it. Time
- 2:16for our morning star, the snarful tech article
- 2:19report. Three big things catching our eye today.
- 2:22Let's kick it off with Apple. We're looking at
- 2:23the iPhone 17. The buzz is this could be the
- 2:27every man's iPhone. Maybe the best value we've
- 2:30seen in years. Yeah, that's the angle. The idea
- 2:32is the standard iPhone 17 is getting some serious
- 2:36upgrades that used to be only on the Pro models.
- 2:38Design wise sounds pretty similar to the 16,
- 2:40a little taller, a little narrower, 6 .3 inch
- 2:43screen now, but the real story is under the hood,
- 2:45or rather on the screen. Exactly, the big one.
- 2:48Promotion is finally trickling down. The standard
- 2:51iPhone 17 gets the 120 Hertz refresh rate. Finally,
- 2:54that makes everything feel so much smoother.
- 2:57Right. and the always -on display, too. These
- 2:59were pro -only features since, what, 2021. It's
- 3:02a big deal for the feel of the phone, something
- 3:04Android users have definitely enjoyed for a while.
- 3:07Totally changes the experience. And then there's
- 3:09the storage. Ah, yes, the other big value piece.
- 3:11They've doubled the base storage. From 128 gigs
- 3:14to 256 gigs. And crucially, they kept the price
- 3:17the same, still starting at $799. So better screen,
- 3:21double the storage, same price. That makes the
- 3:23$300 jump to the iPhone 17 Pro feel, well, a
- 3:27lot bigger now, doesn't it? It really does. You
- 3:30have to ask yourself, what exactly am I paying
- 3:33that extra $300 for? Especially when you look
- 3:36at performance. Yeah, the reports say the standard
- 3:38A19 chip is surprisingly close to the A19 Pro
- 3:41chip in the more expensive model. Even slightly
- 3:44faster in some single core tasks than the chip
- 3:47in the iPhone Air, apparently. So performance
- 3:50isn't really the differentiator it maybe once
- 3:52was. And camera's getting a bump too. Yep. Still
- 3:55the 48 megapixel main camera, but now the ultra
- 3:59-wide camera also jumps to 48 megapixels up from
- 4:0112. That should mean much better detail in those
- 4:04wider shots. Okay, that's a solid upgrade. And
- 4:06there's something about the front camera, center
- 4:09stage. Right. The new 18 megapixel center stage
- 4:12camera for selfies and video calls. It's clever,
- 4:15uses a square sensor. So it can crop to horizontal
- 4:18video even if you're holding the phone vertically.
- 4:21Exactly, super useful for like social media videos
- 4:23or just making sure you're framed right without
- 4:25having to turn the phone. It's all a common annoyance.
- 4:28Okay, so it sounds like a really strong package
- 4:29for the price, but there have to be some trade
- 4:31-offs compared to the Pro, right? What's still
- 4:33missing? Well, yeah, there are still differences.
- 4:35They got to segment the market somehow. Yeah.
- 4:37You don't get the dedicated telephoto lens for
- 4:39optical zoom. Right. Still digital zoom only
- 4:42on the standard model. You miss out on the pro
- 4:44video features like pro raw photos and pro is
- 4:46video recording speeds to the USB port. Yep.
- 4:50So USB -C to transfer speeds on the standard
- 4:5317. The pros get the much faster USB 3. That's
- 4:57a bit of a sticking point for some, especially
- 4:59in 2025. Hmm. Yeah, that feels like an area they
- 5:02could have upgraded. and colors. Colors are apparently
- 5:05a bit more muted again. Lavender, Sage, Mist
- 5:09Blue. Nice, but maybe not as vibrant as the pro
- 5:13options sometimes are. Okay, so no telephoto,
- 5:16slower data transfer, no pro video codecs, maybe
- 5:18dollar colors. Pretty much. But the argument
- 5:20is, for the average person, are those deal breakers?
- 5:24Probably not. Especially when you get the smooth
- 5:26screen, the extra storage, great cameras, and
- 5:28solid performance. Exactly. It hits that Goldilocks
- 5:31spot for a lot of people. Expect it to be a great
- 5:33phone that will last you, you know, five years.
- 5:35Easily. Makes sense. A really strong value play
- 5:38from Apple this year, it seems. Okay. Moving
- 5:42from the mainstream to something a bit more niche,
- 5:44but really cool. Yeah. Story number two definitely
- 5:47hits the nostalgia button while packing a modern
- 5:49punch. We're talking about the Raspberry Pi 500
- 5:51plus main. The Pi 500 Plus, isn't that the one
- 5:54built into a keyboard? That's the one. An all
- 5:56-in -one PC inside the keyboard chassis. It gives
- 5:59off, as the sources say, serious Commodore 64
- 6:02vibes. Huh. I can see that. A real throwback,
- 6:05like a love letter to those old machines. But
- 6:08this isn't just a minor update. It's a huge leap
- 6:10over the previous Pi 400, positioning it much
- 6:13more as a capable, everyday desktop computer.
- 6:15OK, so what are the big upgrades? Two massive
- 6:18ones stand out. First, RAM. They doubled it to
- 6:2116 gigabytes. Wow, 16 gigs in a pre -keyboard.
- 6:24That's substantial for multitasking. It really
- 6:26is. But maybe even more important is the storage.
- 6:29They ditched the micro SD card slot as the primary
- 6:32boot drive. My goodness, this could be so slow.
- 6:34Right. And they replaced it with a proper 256
- 6:37gigabyte NVMe M .2 SSD. Okay, that's a game changer
- 6:42for usability. Fast boot times, snappy apps.
- 6:45Totally. And it's swappable. So you can put it
- 6:47in an even bigger NVMe drive if you want. It
- 6:50really transforms the Pi from just a hobbyist
- 6:53board into something you could genuinely use
- 6:55day -to -day. And they didn't stop there, right?
- 6:57The keyboard itself got an upgrade? Yeah, they
- 6:59went all out on the feel. It now uses mechanical
- 7:01switches. Really? What kind? Gateron KS33 Blues,
- 7:04apparently. clicky ones, plus customizable RGB
- 7:08lighting under the keys and replaceable keycaps.
- 7:11Okay, so they're serious about making this a
- 7:13pleasant typing experience too, not just a functional
- 7:16box. Seems like it. It targets users who see
- 7:18the Pi as more than just a little project board
- 7:21people who want a polished complete, affordable
- 7:24desktop. And it's based on the Raspberry Pi 5
- 7:27platform. Correct. So you still get that 2 .4
- 7:30GHz quad -core ARM CPU, support for dual 4K displays
- 7:34at 60 Hz. It's got the horsepower. And the price.
- 7:37That's always been the Pi's killer feature. Still
- 7:39incredibly affordable. Starts at just $200 for
- 7:42the keyboard unit itself. $200 for a full computer
- 7:45with 16 gigs of RAM and a 256 gig SSD. That's...
- 7:51Wow. Right. Or there's a $220 desktop kit that
- 7:55adds the official mouse and power supply. It's
- 7:57just phenomenal value for a super polished little
- 7:59machine. Really leaning into making it a complete
- 8:02finished product experience. Very cool. All right.
- 8:04That's the Pi 500 Plus SAC. OK. Now for that
- 8:07hard left turn we mentioned earlier. Yeah. Let's
- 8:09shift from human made tech systems to natural
- 8:13ones. This third story is about ecology, insects,
- 8:17and a pretty stark warning. It ties back to that
- 8:19conversation around the insect apocalypse that
- 8:21really kicked off after a German study back in
- 8:232017. Remember that one? Vaguely. Didn't it find
- 8:26a huge drop in insect biomass in protected areas?
- 8:29Exactly. Something like two -thirds vanished
- 8:30over 25 years. It was alarming. This new study,
- 8:33though, takes a very different, much longer -term
- 8:35approach. Okay, how so? Well, first, they focus
- 8:37on ants in Fiji. Fiji. Why Fiji? Because island
- 8:41ecosystems are isolated. They tend to show the
- 8:44impacts of changes, especially human -driven
- 8:46ones, much faster and more clearly than large
- 8:49continents. Think of it like a magnifying glass
- 8:51for ecological change. Gotcha. So, easier to
- 8:55see the signal from the noise. What was the method?
- 8:58This is the really cool part. They used techniques
- 8:59called community genomics and uh... Museums.
- 9:03Museumomics, like studying museum artifacts.
- 9:05Kind of. It involves sequencing DNA, often very
- 9:08degraded DNA, from specimens stored in museum
- 9:11collections. In this case, ants collected over
- 9:14many decades, maybe even a century or more. Wow.
- 9:17So they can literally look back in time genetically.
- 9:20Precisely. And Community Genomics looks at the
- 9:22combined genetic makeup of all the ant species
- 9:24in that community to see how diversity and population
- 9:27sizes have shifted over really long time scales.
- 9:30So instead of just looking back 25 years, like
- 9:33the German study, they could potentially look
- 9:35back how far? Thousands of years, potentially.
- 9:38It gives a baseline from before major human impact.
- 9:41Okay, that's a powerful approach. So what did
- 9:43they find in Fiji's ants? The results are pretty
- 9:46sobering. They found that 79 % of Fiji's endemic
- 9:50ant species are showing clear signs of decline.
- 9:53Endemic meaning the ones native only to Fiji.
- 9:55Exactly. The species that evolve there and exist
- 9:58nowhere else. Nearly four out of five of them
- 10:01are in trouble. Whoa! And what about non -native
- 10:03ants? That's the other side of the coin. The
- 10:06non -native species, the ones humans brought
- 10:08in accidentally through trade, colonization,
- 10:11agriculture, those species are thriving. So the
- 10:14invaders are pushing out the natives. It looks
- 10:16that way. And the timing aligns worryingly well
- 10:19with the period of intensified global trade,
- 10:22modern agriculture, and European contact over
- 10:24the last few hundred years. So Fiji is acting
- 10:26like that canary in the coal mine you mentioned,
- 10:29showing us what happens when these global pressures
- 10:31hit an ecosystem. That's the takeaway. Because
- 10:34islands are so sensitive, what's happening rapidly
- 10:36in Fiji could be a preview of slower but similar
- 10:40Trends happening globally and why is losing ants
- 10:43or insects in general matter so much well insects
- 10:46are fundamental They're pollinators. They break
- 10:48down dead stuff. They cycle nutrients their food
- 10:51for countless other animals Yeah, they're like
- 10:54the tiny gears that keep the whole ecosystem
- 10:56running right lose the gears and the machine
- 10:59starts to break down pretty much and This study
- 11:01also highlights something else important the
- 11:04value of those dusty old museum collections.
- 11:07Because they hold the historical data. Exactly.
- 11:10They're not just collections of dead bugs. They're
- 11:12invaluable data mines for understanding long
- 11:14-term environmental change. We need to preserve
- 11:17them. A really important, if unsettling, piece
- 11:20of research connects our actions today back through
- 11:24centuries of ecological impact. Definitely puts
- 11:27things in perspective. Okay, before we wrap with
- 11:29the key takeaways, one more shout out to a great
- 11:31sponsor. Yes, this segment is also brought to
- 11:33you by Skoni. That's S -K -O -N -I, pronounced
- 11:36Skoni. They are your go -to for premium golf
- 11:40shoes. If you're hitting the links, you want
- 11:41shoes that perform and look good. Skoni delivers
- 11:44on both. Great style, serious comfort. Totally.
- 11:48And like pins and aces, they have an offer for
- 11:50our listeners. Use the promo code SNARFL again,
- 11:53SNARFL at checkout. And this time the code gets
- 11:55you. 15 % off your entire purchase at SCONI.
- 11:5815 % off premium golf shoes. Solid. Just head
- 12:01to scony .com, that's scony .com, promo code
- 12:05SNARFL. All right, so let's quickly recap the
- 12:07three big stories we connected today. First up,
- 12:09the iPhone 17. Looks like incredible value this
- 12:12year, bringing key pro features like the 120
- 12:14Hertz display and doubling the base storage to
- 12:17256 GB, all while keeping that $799 starting
- 12:21price. Makes the standard model very tempting.
- 12:23Second, the Raspberry Pi 500 plus A. It's more
- 12:26than just a novelty. It's a genuinely powerful
- 12:29and polished all -in -one desktop experience,
- 12:32thanks to 16 gigs of RAM, a fast NVMe SSD, and
- 12:35even a mechanical keyboard, all starting at just
- 12:38200 bucks. Combines nostalgia with real capability.
- 12:41And third, that sobering look at Fiji's ants.
- 12:44Using long -term genomic data from museum specimens,
- 12:48scientists confirmed a dramatic decline in native
- 12:51species linked to human activity over centuries.
- 12:54It's a stark warning from a sensitive ecosystem
- 12:57about broader insect declines and our impact.
- 13:00Yeah, that last one really makes you think, seeing
- 13:02how valuable those old physical specimens are
- 13:05for understanding long -term change, it kind
- 13:08of makes you wonder, what digital data or systems
- 13:10are we creating now that future generations will
- 13:14need to analyze to understand our time? Hmm,
- 13:16that's a fascinating question to ponder over
- 13:18the weekend. What's our digital museum collection
- 13:21going to look like, and will it be preserved?
- 13:23Something to think about. Well, that's our time
- 13:25for this Friday. Thanks so much for joining us.
