- 0:39Travelers and monster catchers abound. I'm Stella
- 0:42Ferris, and this is a Monster Catchers Journal
- 0:44podcast that you have crash -landed on. Today's
- 0:48entry is a reflection you won't want to see.
- 0:53We're not talking about the friendly or even
- 0:56natural glyphs today. No, we're stepping into
- 0:59the shadow glass to confront something darker,
- 1:03something twisted. His name is False Shadow.
- 1:06The corrupted form of a glyph you may remember
- 1:10as Mimimir. Mimimir was already strange, trapping
- 1:19people in reflections, feeding off their identity.
- 1:23With false shadow, he takes it further. There's
- 1:26an old rumor from the Shattered Lands, a circle
- 1:30of cloak figures, people who claim they could
- 1:32bring shattered glyphs back from the brink. attempted
- 1:36to restore Mimimir after it broke during a failed
- 1:39capture. They succeeded, technically, but what
- 1:43they brought back wasn't Mimimir anymore, it
- 1:45had changed. The frame was warped, the glass
- 1:49smoked with darkness, the glyph pulsed with fear.
- 1:54It stopped mimicking and started tormenting.
- 1:57They call it false shadow. When I hear the name
- 2:01whispered at Luan Academy, I don't - I didn't
- 2:05believe it. I thought it was a warning - warning
- 2:07tale. Some overblown myth passed around to scare
- 2:11junior catchers, you know? But last week, I found
- 2:15myself face to face with the mirror that bites
- 2:18back. It started to - in the ruins of a forgotten
- 2:22observatory, where the moon li - Never quite
- 2:35touches the floor. I'd been tracking strange
- 2:37energy patterns, ones that pulsed like old fractured
- 2:40glyph magic, and that's when I saw it. A mirror.
- 2:44Just standing there alone, no frame, no anchor,
- 2:47just hovering, waiting, and it spoke. What do
- 2:50you fear, little spark? I was pulled in before
- 2:56I could even blink. Suddenly I was home, or I
- 3:00thought I was, but everything was wrong. Familiar
- 3:03walls cracked, voices I loved were twisted. I
- 3:06saw myself felling. Letting the people I protect
- 3:10get hurt. Losing everything. The fear was suffocating,
- 3:14and that's what he feeds on. You give in if you
- 3:19believe the vision. False shadow rips your soul
- 3:21out and stills it in a jar. Delicate little thing.
- 3:28It was, but black glass. whispering smoke. It
- 3:34all was too much. Almost. But I remembered what
- 3:40Professor Lang said in one of his band lectures.
- 3:46Fear, when faced, collapses in on itself. So
- 3:50I did the unthinkable. I reached for my capture
- 3:52knife, not to fight, but to cut the illusion.
- 3:56The mirror hissed. I sliced across the vision,
- 3:59the reflection split. He dropped the jar, my
- 4:02soul returned with a breath so sharp I felt it
- 4:05in my teeth. All shadow recoiled. He didn't vanish,
- 4:12but he slithered back into the dark, watching,
- 4:16waiting. I didn't try to catch him, not yet.
- 4:18He's a cryptoglyph. Now, beyond classification,
- 4:22dangerous to even name too often. But the good
- 4:26news, I'm still here, and so are you. I thought
- 4:39I had escaped him completely, but something's
- 4:41been off ever since. Reflections and puddles
- 4:45linger too long, my shadow twist twitches before
- 4:48I move, and sometimes I still hear the jars rattling
- 4:52behind me, even when nothing's there. So today
- 4:55I went back. Not physically, no. That would be
- 4:59reckless. But through meditation, through memory,
- 5:04through the silver of the Hassai, kept from the
- 5:08cursed observatory. Let me tell you what I saw.
- 5:14The mirror world isn't just a place. It's a prison
- 5:18of the mind, built from your regrets, your shame,
- 5:22your nightmares. Imagine walking into a hallway
- 5:25made entirely of yourself, hundreds of mirrors
- 5:27stretching on forever. But none of them show
- 5:30the truth. Some show who you used to be. Others
- 5:33show who you could become. If everything went
- 5:37horribly wrong, in false shadow's realm, time
- 5:40didn't exist. You're not walking forward, you're
- 5:44falling inward. Rooms appear based on what you
- 5:49fear most. I passed a nursery once, my mother's
- 5:52voice calling me, but when I opened the door,
- 5:54there was no one there, just a crib full of black
- 5:57feathers and broken glass. Then came the library.
- 6:01Books whispered, every mistake I've made out
- 6:04loud. Every glyph felled to catch. Every friend
- 6:10I let down. The air in the room was heavy like
- 6:13it was watching me. And that's when I found the
- 6:16gallery of jars. Dozens of them. Hundreds of
- 6:21them. Each one with a name scratched into the
- 6:24glass. Some were long forgotten catchers. Others
- 6:28I recognized. One was Professor Lang's partner.
- 6:32Another one was a young trainee who went missing
- 6:35last year, Zell. Sweet Zell, who had a fear of
- 6:39being alone. It really stumped me because Dr.
- 6:43Ling, he never really talks about his... his
- 6:48work partner. But there was a jar with his work
- 6:54partner's name. His work partner that he used
- 6:57to work with. But he can't no more because they're...
- 7:00they're missing. I couldn't hear their voices,
- 7:05but I felt their presence trapped, dormant, but
- 7:08not gone. False shadow was there too, looming
- 7:11behind the shelves. No form, just a shimmer,
- 7:15a tall outline of smudge, black line and cracked
- 7:18silver eyes. He doesn't speak with words, he
- 7:21speaks in memory. I felt it again, my fear. This
- 7:25time it was my team, Santa Luna, even little
- 7:28Mirno. I saw them, still, impel. cotton reflection
- 7:32that wouldn't shatter. My breath caught. That's
- 7:35when I remembered I wasn't really there. I still
- 7:38held control. I grabbed a sliver of real mirror.
- 7:45I had brought with me the only one I cut my way
- 7:48out with my last time. And I whispered a name,
- 7:53mine, because that's what he feeds on, forgetting
- 7:57who you are. The moment I remembered the room
- 8:06cracked like a spiderweb, jars shook, false shadow
- 8:09hissed, and I escaped. Not unscathed, but whole.
- 8:14That's the true danger of false shadow. He doesn't
- 8:17just trap your body, he makes you question whether
- 8:19you deserve to leave. Makes you want to give
- 8:22up. So, here's what I've learned, travelers.
- 8:26If you fall into the world by accident or design,
- 8:31remember... Your worst fear is only a part of
- 8:34you. The real prison is the one you accept. And
- 8:38as long as you know your name, you can find the
- 8:40door. Bring something reflective, something real.
- 8:43But most importantly, bring your truth. That's
- 8:46the only thing he can't twist. There is something,
- 8:55however, I have to admit. Travelers and monster
- 8:59catchers abound. I didn't catch Foss's shadow.
- 9:03I didn't even try, and maybe that was the right
- 9:05choice, or maybe it was fear. After escaping
- 9:09the mirror world, after walking through jars
- 9:11of stolen souls and illusions shaped like my
- 9:14worst thoughts, I had him. He was right there.
- 9:20Colliding out of splintered reflections, his
- 9:24outline flickering like a candle behind warped
- 9:26glass. My glyphid even pulsed in my hand, ready
- 9:31to deploy, or a beak stood beside me, golden
- 9:35and loyal, eyes fixed on that... eyes fixed on
- 9:40that shimmer. But I froze, not from terror, from
- 9:46understanding. False shadow isn't a monster,
- 9:50he's a scar, the echo of pain and fear stitched
- 9:53together by people who didn't understand what
- 9:55they were reviving. He's not a wild thing running
- 9:58free. He's something made born from the remains
- 10:02of Mimimir and the grief of those who couldn't
- 10:05let go. And I realized, capturing him wouldn't
- 10:09fix that. There's a strange pressure among catchers,
- 10:13you know. We're supposed to fix things, log them,
- 10:17classify them, contain them. A false shadow,
- 10:20he doesn't want to be contained. He wants to
- 10:22be understood. That's not an excuse. He's dangerous.
- 10:26But what he does do to people, the fear, the
- 10:30traps, the soul jars, it's unforgivable. But
- 10:34something tells me, if I caught him now, I'd
- 10:38just be throwing another lock on the door that's
- 10:40already chained shut. He wouldn't be healed.
- 10:43He'd just be buried again. And what happens to
- 10:48buried fear? It festers, it grows teeth. So now,
- 10:55I didn't catch false shadow, and I might never
- 10:58be the one who does, but I'll be watching, learning,
- 11:01maybe, just maybe, there's another way, something
- 11:06beyond the trap, beyond the jar, a way to remind
- 11:10him who he was before he became a reflection
- 11:13of our worst selves. Not every glyph needs to
- 11:17be caught, some need to be remembered, and until
- 11:20then, I'll keep the sliver of mere I carry close,
- 11:26a reminder of the fear I faced and the fear I
- 11:28let go. False shadow is still out there, but
- 11:31so am I. So after escaping the mirror world,
- 11:45I chose not to catch, and not choosing to catch
- 11:47false shadow. I didn't go home. I went straight
- 11:50to Luan Academy, straight to Professor Orium.
- 11:54He's one of the only people who studied mirror
- 11:56-based glyphs without going completely mad. He's
- 12:00also the only one who's ever mentioned false
- 12:04shadow in a public lecture and survived the backlash.
- 12:10We met in the South Wing. His office is barely
- 12:13an office. It's more like a collapsing observatory
- 12:17stitched together with spiderweb diagrams and
- 12:19half -melted glass maps. The door was already
- 12:23open. He was waiting. You saw it, didn't you?
- 12:37Orion asked. I nodded and sat down. I didn't
- 12:40even take off my coat. The mirror shard was still
- 12:43wrapped in my scarf when I began my report. Subject?
- 12:49False shadow. Classification unknown. likely
- 12:52a cryptoglyph or a subtype. We haven't named
- 12:57possibly a mirror -borne entity beyond our current
- 13:02containment understanding. Method of appearance.
- 13:06Appearance in a derelict observatory east of
- 13:11the ruined path, manifest it as a free -standing
- 13:14mirror unfixed to any structure, activate it,
- 13:20on proximity without contacts. It doesn't need
- 13:24touch. It reads intent. If you're searching for
- 13:29answers, it pulls. Confirmed. Entry was instant.
- 13:33Vision began immediately. Mirror world composed
- 13:38of overlapping personal fears. Environments react
- 13:43to emotional state, gravity unstable, time nonlinear.
- 13:49That's why most people don't return." Orion said
- 13:55to me. He didn't interrupt much, just nodded
- 13:59occasionally, eyes behind those crescent glasses,
- 14:02glinted with something between curiosity and
- 14:05concern. Then I told him about the jars, about
- 14:08how many names were etched into the glass. His
- 14:11face changed at that, like he recognized some
- 14:14of them, maybe even one that mattered. The jars
- 14:18are real. I saw one once. It had my brother's
- 14:21name. I'm sorry. I said softly. Don't be. He
- 14:28chose to stay. Said he wanted to learn from the
- 14:31fear. Okay, so let me start with the next part,
- 14:36Professor Orion. Escape method. The illusion
- 14:39fractured after subject recalled their own name
- 14:43and used a reflective blade to cut through the
- 14:46environment. False shadow recoiled. from a contact
- 14:49with the metal. It's not the metal, Stella Ferris.
- 14:53It's the clarity. Anything forged with certainty.
- 14:57Steel, silver, self. He can't touch it. I finished
- 15:02the report, closed the log, and just sat there
- 15:06for a moment. I asked him the question that had
- 15:09been digging into me the whole way back. Did
- 15:15I do the right thing not catching him? He didn't
- 15:18answer right away, but then he said something
- 15:20I'll never forget. The right thing, maybe. The
- 15:24brave thing, absolutely. You didn't defeat him,
- 15:29but you didn't let him win either. That's the
- 15:32first step to saving something lost. We catalogued
- 15:37my findings and I left the mirror shard with
- 15:40him, for keepsaking. He said he'd study it, but
- 15:44something tells me he already knew more than
- 15:47he let on. In me, I walked out of Luan Academy
- 15:51into the night, star shimmering above the twin
- 15:53moons, or sorry, the twin suns, and the three
- 15:59moons, shining ever so slightly above, and I
- 16:04felt a little lighter, while shadow is still
- 16:07out there, but I'm not alone in facing him anymore.
- 16:11And neither are you. After the long walk back
- 16:19from the academy, I didn't head to my room. Instead,
- 16:27I climbed up the porch, where I knew they'd be
- 16:29waiting. Luna was on the hammock, reading something
- 16:33ancient and probably forbidden. Luna was sitting
- 16:36on the steps with a bat bowl of glowing berry
- 16:38seeds. Beating Mernu by hand, they looked up
- 16:43the moment they heard me crunch across the gravel
- 16:47path. You look like someone tried to drown you
- 16:51in regret and then hung you out to dry. That's
- 16:56not far off, actually, Xena. You saw him, didn't
- 17:00you? False shadow. Luna asked. Worse, I didn't
- 17:03catch him. Good, Xena replied. Good, I ask. You're
- 17:12not supposed to catch everything, Stellie. Some
- 17:15things, some glyphs, need to breathe, even if
- 17:18their breath smells like sorrow and broken glass.
- 17:22Did he hurt you? Luna asked. No, not really.
- 17:27He showed me things, my worst fears, losing all
- 17:30of you, letting the sanctuary fall apart, becoming
- 17:33like... like her. Like Ravena. I said softly.
- 17:42You didn't make those fears. You already had
- 17:44them. You just pulled them to the surface. Luna
- 17:48said. And you faced them. That's power. Steliferous.
- 17:53You think glyph catching is about containment?
- 17:55But it's not. It's about resilience. Witnessing
- 17:59what others can't. Xena said. I kept thinking
- 18:04of you two. It's what pulled me out. I said,
- 18:08with tears in my eyes. We're always with you,
- 18:12even when your shadow walks the wrong way, Luna
- 18:15said. We stayed out there for a long time. Senna
- 18:20handed me a mug of rose fruit tea. Luna wrapped
- 18:24me in a blanket that smelled like cloud lavender
- 18:27and mint oil. The three of us just sat in the
- 18:31glow of the moons, saying nothing for a while,
- 18:34and maybe that's what I need at most. Not a lecture,
- 18:37not a mission, just them. You're lucky I like
- 18:42you. If you'd come back possessed, I would have
- 18:46hit you with a flying frying pan, Zena said,
- 18:51teasing me. I had salt lines in my drawer, just
- 18:55in case. Don't think I won't use them, Luna said.
- 19:00I love you too, I replied. Luna and Zena said.
- 19:05at the same time in perfect unison, we know.
- 19:10I didn't catch false shadow as I've said like
- 19:12probably a million times already, but I faced
- 19:15him and I came home to the people who remind
- 19:17me who I am with the mirrors, or when the mirror
- 19:20lies. Maybe that's enough for now. After the
- 19:33laughter had finally died down and our teacups
- 19:35were empty, we leaned back against the port trailing,
- 19:44gazing up at the twin moons in the endless sky
- 19:47of Nibiru. Well, in the three. Sorry, I keep
- 19:51saying twin moons, but I keep messing up. It's
- 19:53twin suns. In the three moons. And without really
- 20:00planning to, we started naming the stars. That
- 20:03one. Right, and twitchy. That's Hexburn. Because
- 20:08it looks like it wants to curse something, Xena
- 20:11said. Ooh, that cluster there, the whisperbraid.
- 20:15I used to think that's where cloud glyphs go
- 20:18to sleep, Luna said, smiling. See the slow moving
- 20:23one over there? The soft gold one? that sanctum.
- 20:29Feels like a safe place, like home." I said,
- 20:34not bad, Stellie. You've got naming talent, Zena
- 20:37said. Yeah, when she's not almost getting soul
- 20:40jarred. Luna replied, fair. I said, laughing.
- 20:46There's something magical about naming stars.
- 20:48It doesn't change them, but it helps you remember
- 20:52where you were when you needed something to believe
- 20:54in. And tonight, under the sky that watched us
- 20:58live and laugh and survive, we named every single
- 21:04one we could see. Not because they were ours,
- 21:08but because we were theirs. And so, under the
- 21:20twin suns and the three moons, a sky full of
- 21:25memories, we named the stars. Some after dreams
- 21:29some after fears and some just because they made
- 21:32us feel less alone While shadow is still out
- 21:35there, but tonight we didn't win Tonight was
- 21:38ours and tomorrow. We keep going naming the dark
- 21:41one spark at a time until they then travelers
- 21:45stay brave stay clever and Remember no matter
- 21:49how deep the shadows fall the stars are always
- 21:52waiting to be named This has been the monster
- 21:54catchers journal podcast And I'm Stella Farris.
- 21:59This is our sky. Goodbye. See you next time.
- 22:07This is Stella Farris signing off.
