- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. Luke 19 begins with the story of
- 0:45a wee little man that many of us grew up singing about in Sunday
- 0:49School. Of course, I mean Zacchaeus.
- 0:52Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector in Jericho who had a
- 0:55powerful encounter with Jesus. Listen to his story as it's
- 0:58described in today's chapter. He entered Jericho and was
- 1:02passing through and there was a man called by the name of
- 1:05Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and
- 1:07he was rich. Zacchaeus was trying to see who
- 1:10Jesus was and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small
- 1:14in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed
- 1:17up into a Sycamore tree in order to see him, for he was about to
- 1:21pass through that way. When Jesus came to the place he
- 1:24looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down,
- 1:28for to day I must stay at your house.
- 1:30And he hurried and came down and received him gladly.
- 1:34When they saw it they all began to grumble, saying, He has gone
- 1:37to be the guest of a man who is a Sinner.
- 1:40Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, Behold Lord, half of
- 1:43my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have
- 1:46defrauded anyone of anything I will give back four times as
- 1:49much. And Jesus said to him to day
- 1:52salvation has come to this house because he too is the Son of
- 1:55Abraham. For the Son of man has come to
- 1:58seek and to save that which was lost.
- 2:02All throughout the Bible we see this reality that real, genuine
- 2:05faith is demonstrated not in what we say, but in what we do.
- 2:10Put another way, faith works. faith in God is lived out in
- 2:14obedience to Him. And that is exactly what we see
- 2:17on display here in the life of Zacchaeus.
- 2:19This is a man whose reputation as a Sinner preceded him.
- 2:23He was well known as someone who did not live for God.
- 2:27He was a tax collector who had likely gotten rich by taking
- 2:30advantage of his fellow Jews. And yet here Zacchaeus has an
- 2:34encounter with Jesus. He puts himself in Jesus path,
- 2:38even climbs a tree to get a good look at him.
- 2:41And Jesus takes notice. He calls him down from the tree
- 2:44by name and tells him that today he will be staying at his house.
- 2:49And then what we see is the display of the faith of a Sinner
- 2:53who has been rescued by God's grace.
- 2:56Zacchaeus is changed. His life has been upended by
- 2:59Christ. He embodies with his actions the
- 3:02reality of 2nd Corinthians 517 that if anyone is in Christ,
- 3:06he's a new creature. The old things passed away.
- 3:09Behold, new things have come. Zacchaeus begins taking radical
- 3:14steps of obedience. He commits to giving half of his
- 3:17possessions to the poor and to paying back anyone that he has
- 3:20cheated 4 times what he took from them.
- 3:22His faith is not just a mental agreement to what Jesus says is
- 3:25true or right. No, his faith gets to work.
- 3:30Zacchaeus has a new master now. No longer is power or position
- 3:34or possessions on the throne of his life.
- 3:37Jesus is. And so we are met with a
- 3:39question that we must evaluate for ourselves.
- 3:42Are we living out what we say we believe?
- 3:45Are we acting on what we claim to follow?
- 3:48The book of James tells us that faith without works is dead,
- 3:52useless faith. It can't exist.
- 3:55If we really believe Jesus is who he claims to be, like
- 3:59Zacchaeus, our lives will reflect it.
- 4:02So take a hard look at your life today.
- 4:05Who is on the throne of your life?
- 4:08Are you practicing what you preach?
- 4:11Are you walking the walk or just talking the talk?
- 4:15Fall on the grace of the Jesus who came to seek and save the
- 4:18lost and live out what you believe.
