- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. All right. Welcome, everyone, to A Deeper
- 0:19Dot, the show where we really get into, you know,
- 0:21the nitty gritty of one big thing happening in
- 0:24the world. Yep. That's us taking those big stories
- 0:26and, well... Connecting the dots. That's right,
- 0:29from Snarful Solutions Group. So this week, I
- 0:33think we've all seen the headlines. It's tariffs,
- 0:36global tariffs. Yeah, big news dropped midweek,
- 0:39and it's definitely got people talking and worrying.
- 0:43And we're talking... potentially huge impacts
- 0:46on the U .S. economy. And you know what that
- 0:48means. It comes down to us, you know, everyday
- 0:50Americans, our wallets, our jobs, even our tech.
- 0:55Exactly. And that's why we're here taking a deep
- 0:56dive into all the latest reports, expert opinions,
- 0:58all that stuff. We'll cut through the noise and
- 1:00give you the information you need to to understand
- 1:02what's going on and what it might mean for you.
- 1:05So, all right, let's start with, I guess, what
- 1:07happened. Tariffs, global ones announced, like
- 1:09you said, middle of the week. And the stock market
- 1:12did not like that. No, no, it did not. We're
- 1:16talking a steep, steep drop two days in a row
- 1:19for major U .S. stock markets. Worst week they've
- 1:22had in five years, actually. And it wasn't just
- 1:25here. The FTSE 100 over in London had its biggest
- 1:28single day drop in, well, over five years, too.
- 1:31Yikes. So, I mean, that right there, that tells
- 1:34you something. People are nervous. Oh, yeah,
- 1:36definitely. Markets don't like uncertainty. And
- 1:39tariffs, well, they bring a whole lot of that.
- 1:41And we're not talking small numbers here. Estimates
- 1:44are saying something like four point nine trillion
- 1:46dollars. Yeah, trillion with a T has been wiped
- 1:49off the global stock market since the announcement.
- 1:51I mean, that's that's huge. Wow. OK, so in the
- 1:54middle of all of this, all this chaos, what does
- 1:57President Trump do? Well, let's just say he's
- 1:59sticking to his guns on this one. His trade policies,
- 2:01he says, they're not changing. Matter of fact,
- 2:03he posted on social media all caps. This is a
- 2:06great time to get rich. which, you know, interesting
- 2:09timing because while all this was happening,
- 2:11he was reportedly golfing down in Florida. OK,
- 2:14so that probably didn't go over too well with
- 2:16everyone, right? Well, you can imagine some some
- 2:20pretty strong criticism came out, especially
- 2:21from the Democrats. Senator Schumer, he called
- 2:24it a billionaire bubble, right? Like saying there's
- 2:28this disconnect between what the president's
- 2:30saying and what everyday people are, you know
- 2:33feeling Senator Lujan He was on the same page
- 2:35saying the president needs to talk to to regular
- 2:37folks and and see how this could actually affect
- 2:40them Yeah, I get that so it wasn't just politicians
- 2:43reacting to this right? What about the experts
- 2:46like? Jerome Powell, the Federal Reserve chair,
- 2:48he had some things to say, too. Oh, yeah, he
- 2:50did. And what was striking was, well, how direct
- 2:53he was. He said these tariffs are significantly
- 2:56larger than expected and that they're highly
- 2:59likely to lead to two things we don't want. higher
- 3:02inflation, possibly for a long time, and slower
- 3:05economic growth. And this is the guy in charge
- 3:07of keeping prices stable and making sure people
- 3:10have jobs, so when he says something like that,
- 3:12you gotta pay attention. That's worrisome. So,
- 3:15I mean, how do these tariffs even work to, like,
- 3:17make prices go up? So, think of a tariff like
- 3:20a tax, but on stuff we buy from other countries.
- 3:23That makes the raw materials, the parts companies
- 3:25use to make things, it makes all that more expensive.
- 3:29And that's what economists call cost push inflation.
- 3:33So then to cover those higher costs, companies
- 3:36have to, well, raise their prices. And guess
- 3:38who ends up paying more? Us, the consumers. Makes
- 3:41sense. So, and I remember reading something about
- 3:44the president wanting to cut interest rates right
- 3:46now, but Powell. He wasn't having it. Right.
- 3:49President Trump was pushing for an immediate
- 3:51interest rate cut, but Powell basically said,
- 3:53no, not happening. He said the Fed's focused
- 3:55on keeping those price increases in check and
- 3:58that they're going to decide what to do with
- 3:59interest rates, not the president. It's a pretty
- 4:02clear sign that they don't necessarily agree
- 4:04on the best way to handle all of this. And a
- 4:06lot of economists, by the way, they're siding
- 4:08with Powell saying these tariffs, they're really
- 4:10worried about prices going up. Yeah, yeah, I
- 4:12can see why. But OK, so. Not everyone was doom
- 4:16and gloom, right? I mean, I think I saw something
- 4:18from the Treasury Secretary, Scott Besant, and
- 4:21he seemed a bit more, well, optimistic about
- 4:24this whole thing. Yeah, he was definitely singing
- 4:26a different tune. Besant said he has, quote,
- 4:29high confidence that these tariffs will actually
- 4:31work. He even said, and I'm quoting here, I think
- 4:34we have to try this. So clearly there's some
- 4:37debate going on even within the administration
- 4:39about how this is all going to play out. But
- 4:41you got to balance that optimism, right? I mean,
- 4:43the biggest bank in the U .S., they're saying
- 4:45there's a much higher risk of a global recession
- 4:47because of these tariffs, like up to 60 percent.
- 4:50That's that's a pretty serious warning. OK, so
- 4:53all right, let's get into the why. Why are we
- 4:54doing this? What's what's the argument for these
- 4:56tariffs? So the main reason the is that he wants
- 5:00companies to move their factories, their operations,
- 5:03back to the U .S. The idea is that'll boost American
- 5:06manufacturing, create jobs here, and, you know,
- 5:09make America wealthy again. It's all part of
- 5:11his philosophy on trade, which is basically,
- 5:15let's make things here, let's depend less on
- 5:17other countries. Right, right, America first.
- 5:19And he's been pretty vocal about this whole thing,
- 5:22right? Oh, yeah. On Troops Social, he said his
- 5:24policies for investors coming to the U .S. quote,
- 5:27will never change. And then there was this TikTok
- 5:31video he shared talking about some kind of secret
- 5:34game with the stock market, basically saying,
- 5:37you can get rich by crashing the market. And
- 5:38then that forces interest rates down. Oh, and
- 5:41there was this quote in the video supposedly
- 5:43from Warren Buffett praising the president. But
- 5:46it turns out it was totally fake. Buffett's company
- 5:49had to come out and say, no, he never said that.
- 5:51OK, so TikTok and trade policy, that's an interesting
- 5:54combo. But I mean, beyond that, what about his
- 5:57stance on the Fed? He didn't exactly hold back
- 5:59there either, did he? No, he didn't. He straight
- 6:01up told Powell to cut interest rates, and I quote,
- 6:05stop playing politics. And when the president
- 6:08starts publicly putting pressure on the Fed like
- 6:10that, well, it makes people nervous, economists
- 6:13especially. They're all about keeping monetary
- 6:15policy separate from from politics. I bet. OK,
- 6:19so we we've talked about the US side of things,
- 6:22but. The president's been dealing with other
- 6:25world leaders too, right? What's been happening
- 6:27on that front? Yeah, he mentioned a conversation
- 6:30with Vietnam's leader, said they might make a
- 6:32deal to get rid of tariffs on U .S. goods. But
- 6:35then with China, things got a bit tense. He criticized
- 6:40them for putting their own tariffs on U .S. goods,
- 6:42said, quote, China played it wrong. They panicked.
- 6:46So, yeah, the whole global trade situation is
- 6:48feeling a little shaky right now. A little. I
- 6:50mean, China, they didn't waste any time hitting
- 6:52back with their own tariffs, did they? Not at
- 6:54all. Almost as soon as the U .S. announcement,
- 6:57bam, China slaps a 34 percent tariff on things
- 7:00we're sending them. And that's the scary part,
- 7:03right? It can turn into this back -and -forth,
- 7:05tariffs going up and up, hurting businesses and,
- 7:08you know, us regular folks in both countries.
- 7:10And who knows, maybe other countries will jump
- 7:12into making the whole situation even worse. Right.
- 7:15And in Canada, I mean, they didn't just sit back
- 7:18and watch either, did they? No, they didn't.
- 7:19Prime Minister Carney said they're matching Trump's
- 7:2225 percent tariff on cars, so they're putting
- 7:25their own tariff on cars coming from the U .S.
- 7:28And get this, the money they get from those tariffs
- 7:30they're using it to help Canadian car workers
- 7:33and companies that are being hurt by the U .S.
- 7:36tariffs. It shows you how seriously countries
- 7:38are taking this, trying to protect their own
- 7:41people and industries. Yeah. Okay, so all of
- 7:44this is, well, a lot to take in, but let's bring
- 7:47it back to us, the listeners, especially when
- 7:49it comes to technology. I mean, this stuff affects
- 7:51all of us. What should we be thinking about here?
- 7:53This is where it gets really real, especially
- 7:55if you're into tech. Because, you know, phones,
- 7:57computers, all that stuff, it's made... with
- 8:00parts from all over the world. So these tariffs,
- 8:03they can really mess things up. Those parts get
- 8:06more expensive, companies have to pay more, and
- 8:08what happens? Prices go up. You go to buy a new
- 8:11phone or a laptop, and boom, it costs more than
- 8:14you thought. So wait, that new gadget I've been
- 8:16saving up for, it could actually be more expensive
- 8:19now because of these tariffs. It's definitely
- 8:21a possibility, and it's not just about buying
- 8:24stuff. Remember those tariffs China put in place?
- 8:27That can hurt American tech companies, too. Selling
- 8:29stuff to China gets more expensive, so their
- 8:31products aren't as competitive there. And that
- 8:34can hit their profits, which could lead to, well,
- 8:37job losses, less investment, you name it. And
- 8:39remember that big drop in the stock market we
- 8:41talked about? Well, a lot of Americans have investments
- 8:44and retirement savings tied up in those tech
- 8:46companies, so that drop... Yeah, that's affecting
- 8:49people directly. Man, it's like, yeah, there's
- 8:52this goal of bringing tech manufacturing back
- 8:54to the US, which sounds good. But in the meantime,
- 8:58we could be looking at higher prices and our
- 9:01tech companies struggling. It's a tough situation
- 9:03for sure. There's this push to make things here,
- 9:06but the immediate impact is, well, a lot of uncertainty
- 9:09and potentially higher costs for everyone, and
- 9:12tech is right in the middle of it all. OK, but
- 9:14hold on. I did see something about job growth,
- 9:16like good job numbers coming out, and the president
- 9:19was pointing to that as a positive sign. So is
- 9:22it all bad news? Well, that March jobs report.
- 9:25Yeah, it showed two hundred and twenty eight
- 9:27thousand jobs added, which is good. But but this
- 9:31is key. That data is from before these tariffs
- 9:34were announced. It's like a snapshot of the economy
- 9:36before things changed. So, yeah, things might
- 9:39have been looking up, but these tariffs, they're
- 9:40a whole new ballgame. We don't know what they'll
- 9:42do to those positive trends. Hmm. Yeah. OK. And
- 9:47there was also this talk about, you know, maybe
- 9:48these tariffs aren't forever. Maybe they're like
- 9:50a bargaining chip in some bigger negotiation.
- 9:53Yeah, some Republicans are saying that. They're
- 9:55saying these tariffs are just a starting point,
- 9:58you know, set them high and then try to get other
- 10:01countries to negotiate and lower them. I think
- 10:04Besen even used the phrase high level mark. But
- 10:06the question is, will other countries play ball
- 10:09and how much damage will be done while we're
- 10:11waiting for these negotiations to happen? So
- 10:14basically, nobody really knows what's going to
- 10:16happen. That's the truth. Things are changing
- 10:18fast. And the long -term impact of these tariffs,
- 10:21well, it's still a big question mark. There's
- 10:23so much going on, trade wars, central banks doing
- 10:26their thing, businesses and people like us trying
- 10:29to figure out what to do. It's a lot. It really
- 10:32is. So all right, let's try to sum this up. We've
- 10:35got these global tariffs causing the stock market
- 10:37to freak out, experts saying inflation is going
- 10:39up, the economy is going to slow down. And globally,
- 10:42other countries are already taking action, hitting
- 10:44back with their own tariffs. Yeah. And for you,
- 10:46the American listener, it could mean higher prices
- 10:49for just about everything, especially tech, which
- 10:52we all use. Plus, your investments might be taking
- 10:55a hit, and the future of the economy, well, it's
- 10:58looking a bit uncertain right now. So here's
- 11:00something to think about as we wrap up. If these
- 11:03tariffs really do stick around, how's that going
- 11:05to change the way we make tech? Like all those
- 11:08complex supply chains, companies getting parts
- 11:12from all over the place. What's going to happen
- 11:14to that? Will we still get the latest gadgets?
- 11:17Will they be affordable? And can diplomacy, you
- 11:19know, talking things out, can that fix this mess,
- 11:22or will it just make things worse? It's a complicated
- 11:26situation, to say the least. It really is, and
- 11:28understanding all of this, it's more important
- 11:30than ever. We are here to help here at Snarfles,
