- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:18And I'm Morgan. It's Tuesday, September 16th,
- 0:212025, coming to you from Snarful Solutions Group
- 0:24here in Sacramento. And it is definitely warm
- 0:26here in Sacramento today. We're looking at a
- 0:28high... Near 96 degrees. So yeah, that's a sunshine
- 0:32definitely but Looking nationally things are
- 0:36a bit more. Well active weather wise Yeah, it
- 0:39looks like a low -pressure system is heading
- 0:40into the mid Atlantic right bringing rain some
- 0:43gusty winds and even a risk for coastal flooding
- 0:46through midweek But then you've got places like
- 0:49the mid to upper Mississippi Valley the Great
- 0:51Lakes the Northeast They're actually seeing unseasonably
- 0:54warm, even hot temperatures holding through Thursday.
- 0:57So quite the contrast across the country. And,
- 1:00you know, the markets are showing a little bit
- 1:01of that mixed feeling, too. How'd things close
- 1:03yesterday? Well, the Dow Jones finished up, but
- 1:05just barely. Forty five thousand nine hundred
- 1:08and thirty four dollars is zero. That's a gain
- 1:10of only point oh three percent for the day. OK.
- 1:13But the week still looks decent. Yeah. Weekly
- 1:15is still up over one point one percent. The S
- 1:17&P 500, though. dipped slightly down 0 .04 %
- 1:20to 6 ,621 .31. Still holding on to weekly gains
- 1:25there too. Oh yeah, still up almost 1 .9 % for
- 1:28the week, so pretty solid overall. And Bitcoin.
- 1:31Always got to check in on Bitcoin. Right. It
- 1:33closed at 115 ,477 .77. That's up just 0 .06
- 1:39% daily, but the weekly gain is strong, up 3
- 1:42.54%. Wow, okay. Strong week for Bitcoin, then.
- 1:46Perfectly. Now, Some news closer to home for
- 1:50us Northern California folks. Uh oh, I have a
- 1:53bad feeling about this. Don't say it's the Giants.
- 1:56Yeah, sorry. Our San Francisco Giants, they had
- 1:59a rough one against the Diamondbacks yesterday,
- 2:02September 15th. What was the final? A tough 1
- 2:04-8 loss. Zach Gallin pitched really well for
- 2:07Arizona, got the win. Anyone hit well for them.
- 2:10Heroldo Perdomo for Arizona went three for three.
- 2:12Just one of those knives for the Giants. Yeah,
- 2:14tough loss. Okay. Well, we'll get them next time.
- 2:16Got to shake it off. That's the spirit. Okay.
- 2:18Before we jump into the big tech stories today,
- 2:20we are really excited to welcome a new sponsor.
- 2:22Yes. A big shout out to Pins and Aces. If you're
- 2:25a golfer listening, you need to know about them.
- 2:27Absolutely. They offer premium golf apparel,
- 2:30accessories. Really cool stuff. Great quality.
- 2:33You can find them online at pinsanddances .com.
- 2:36That's P -I -N -S and A -C -E -S dot com. And
- 2:40here's the best part. Use our promo code SNARFL,
- 2:43S -N -A -R -F -U -L, at checkout. And you get
- 2:4621 % off your entire purchase. That's a fantastic
- 2:50deal. So pinsanddances .com code SNARFL. All
- 2:54right, let's connect some dots now. We've got
- 2:56three key stories from the SNARFL Tech article
- 2:58report, our Morningstar, that really show how
- 3:01tech news impacts, you know, your life, your
- 3:04work, everything. Okay, first up, this has been
- 3:06like the story that just won't end, but maybe,
- 3:08just maybe, we're getting close on the TikTok
- 3:10front. It seems that way. Treasury Secretary
- 3:12Scott Besson announced there's a framework deal
- 3:14reached between the U .S. and China about TikTok.
- 3:17Oh, framework, okay. So not final final yet.
- 3:19Not quite. President Trump and China's President
- 3:21Xi Jinping are apparently scheduled to talk on
- 3:23Friday to finalize the details. And the timing
- 3:26here is key, right? Because that deadline for
- 3:28ByteDance to sell. Exactly. The September 17th
- 3:32deadline for ByteDance, TikTok's parent company,
- 3:35to divest its U .S. business or, well, face a
- 3:38potential shutdown. It was really coming down
- 3:40to the wire. President Trump even mentioned it
- 3:42on Truth Social, didn't he? Something about saving
- 3:44a company young people wanted? He did. Bit cryptic
- 3:48saying a deal was reached on a certain company
- 3:50that young people in our country very much wanted
- 3:52to save He's definitely aware of its popularity.
- 3:55So this framework. What does it mean? US control
- 4:00Besant suggested it could pivot the platform
- 4:02to US controlled ownership But when asked if
- 4:06China would keep a stake Trump apparently said
- 4:09that wasn't decided yet Hmm. So still some unknowns,
- 4:12but this is huge, obviously. Oh, absolutely.
- 4:14And it matters directly to you listening. If
- 4:16you're one of the 170 million TikTok users in
- 4:18the U .S., this framework likely means the app
- 4:20stays available. Which is huge relief, I imagine.
- 4:23Your favorite creators, your videos gone overnight.
- 4:26That would have been disruptive, to say the least.
- 4:29Totally. And think about businesses. So many
- 4:32small businesses creators rely on TikTok for
- 4:35marketing. for actual income. The uncertainty
- 4:38has been a huge headache. So this offers some
- 4:41potential stability for them. Hopefully, yes.
- 4:44And looking bigger picture, this whole saga really
- 4:46highlights the complex tech and trade relationship
- 4:50between the U .S. and China. It's that constant
- 4:53tension, isn't it? National security concerns
- 4:54about data versus the, well, the massive economic
- 4:58and cultural footprint of an app like TikTok.
- 5:01Precisely. And China's lead negotiator, Li Chenggang,
- 5:04made it clear they don't want the U .S. to continue
- 5:06to suppress Chinese companies and will protect
- 5:08their interests. High stakes all around. It really
- 5:11has felt like will they, won't they for so long?
- 5:13Trump extended the deadline, what, three times
- 5:15already? Yep, three times. This deal, if it holds,
- 5:19would likely mean a fourth extension while details
- 5:21are finalized. And that comment from Besant about
- 5:24the deal being between two private parties. Interesting.
- 5:27How much is really decided by the politicians
- 5:28versus the companies? Good question. It's a real
- 5:31tightrope walk. You've got Congress, bipartisan
- 5:34support for divestment on security grounds. But
- 5:37then the reality of the app's immense popularity,
- 5:40especially with younger voters. Yeah, the administration
- 5:42definitely has to weigh that. OK, so from geopolitical
- 5:45drama to... Accidental leaks. Exactly. Let's
- 5:49shift gears to meta. It looks like someone hit
- 5:51the publish button a little too early over there.
- 5:53What happened? They actually posted, and then
- 5:55quickly took down, an unlisted YouTube video
- 5:58revealing their next -gen smart glasses, just
- 6:01days before their big Connect conference. Oh,
- 6:04wow. Talk about spoiling your own announcement.
- 6:06So what did the leaks show? Two major new products.
- 6:09First, the Metare band display glasses. These
- 6:11actually have a heads -up display, a HUD in the
- 6:13right lens. A HUD. OK, that's cool, like projecting
- 6:16info. Seems like it. And the control method sounds
- 6:19wild. Yeah. It uses a wristband with something
- 6:21called SEMG technology. SEMG? What's that? Surface
- 6:25Electromyography. Basically, it reads tiny electrical
- 6:28signals from your hand and finger muscle movements.
- 6:31So you could, like, write a reply just by gesturing.
- 6:34Whoa. OK, that sounds very sci -fi. Riding in
- 6:37the air. My inner geek is excited. That confirms
- 6:41those hypernova rumors then. That's like it,
- 6:44yeah. Then there's the second pair. The Oakley
- 6:47Metasphere glasses. Oakley! So aimed at sports.
- 6:50Exactly. Designed for athletes. The big feature
- 6:53here is a camera centered right on the nose bridge.
- 6:56Oh, that makes sense for first person video.
- 6:58Better than a camera on the side. Right. Perfect
- 7:00for capturing skiing, running, whatever. These
- 7:02probably don't have the display like the Ray
- 7:05-Bans, but we'll have the cameras, speakers,
- 7:07mics. So why does this leak matter to, you know,
- 7:10us regular folks? Well, it's a big step in Meta's
- 7:13whole strategy. They really want to make AI powered
- 7:15glasses a mainstream thing. Moving AI off your
- 7:18phone and onto your face, basically. Hands -free
- 7:21AI notifications, maybe maps right in your view.
- 7:24I can see the appeal. Definitely. And for athletes,
- 7:27getting that perfect first -person shot without
- 7:29messing with a phone or another camera, that's
- 7:31a big deal. Being in the moment, but still capturing
- 7:33it. What about the price? Weren't these rumored
- 7:35to be super expensive? They were. Rumor said
- 7:38maybe $1 ,400 for the Ray -Ban displays, but
- 7:41the leak suggests they might start around $800.
- 7:44$800? Still not cheap, but way more accessible
- 7:47than $1 ,400. Exactly. It looks like an aggressive
- 7:50move by Metta to really push adoption. Zuckerberg
- 7:53even said people not using AI glasses could eventually
- 7:56be at a cognitive disadvantage. Wow, cognitive
- 7:58disadvantage? That's bold. He's really betting
- 8:02big on this. He absolutely is. But of course,
- 8:04this brings up the P word. Privacy. Always. More
- 8:08cameras on faces. Yep, raises huge questions.
- 8:11Meta says they're focusing on on -device AI,
- 8:14processing data locally for privacy, but past
- 8:17history with things like facial recognition experiments
- 8:19makes people wary. Sure, and competitors are
- 8:22offering things like removable cameras, right,
- 8:24for more user control. They are. Meta CTO, Andrew
- 8:27Bosworth, basically said, look, if people don't
- 8:29want this, we don't have to make it, acknowledging
- 8:31the concern, but the push is definitely on. You
- 8:33have to wonder, was that leak really accidental?
- 8:35or just brilliant marketing to build hype for
- 8:38Kinect. Huh? Wouldn't put it past them. Remember
- 8:41the first Ray -Ban Smart Glasses? They didn't
- 8:44exactly set the world on fire. Not really, no.
- 8:46These sound like a massive upgrade, though. A
- 8:48serious upgrade. Yeah. And those Oakleys for
- 8:51athletes? I can see those being really popular
- 8:53for capturing action shots from your own point
- 8:55of view. Definitely. OK, from Meta's future glasses
- 8:58to Apple's present software, let's talk iOS 26.
- 9:03Right, the new iPhone operating system is out.
- 9:06And it's a mix, as usual. Some really cool new
- 9:08stuff, some things that feel maybe not quite
- 9:11finished. I installed it right away. And visually,
- 9:14the big thing is that liquid glass look. Describe
- 9:17that. What's it like? Everything's kind of translucent,
- 9:19menus and stuff, and they have these little squishing,
- 9:22wiggling animations. It looks slick. I know some
- 9:24people didn't love it in beta. Yeah, it was a
- 9:26bit divisive. Apple apparently tweaked it for
- 9:29better legibility. They did. I think it looks
- 9:31good now, but honestly. My absolute favorite
- 9:34feature, maybe in the whole update, call screening.
- 9:37Oh yeah, that one's huge. Explain how it works.
- 9:40Okay, so if you get a call from a number not
- 9:42in your contacts, you get options. You can tap
- 9:45Ask Reason for Calling. And the phone asks for
- 9:47you. Yeah. And it transcribes what the caller
- 9:50says right on your screen in real time. So you
- 9:52can see why they're calling before you decide
- 9:54to pick up. That's brilliant for dodging spam.
- 9:57Or just calls you don't want to take right then.
- 9:59Totally. Or you can just hit silence for all
- 10:01unsaved numbers and they go straight to voicemail
- 10:03without ringing. The peace. That's amazing. Finally,
- 10:07a real weapon against spam calls. What else is
- 10:10good? quality of life stuff. You can finally,
- 10:13finally change the alarm snooze lengths from
- 10:161 to 15 minutes. No more being stuck with that
- 10:19weird 9 minutes. Uh -huh. That 9 minute default
- 10:21was bizarre. About time. Right. And you get charging
- 10:24time estimates on the lock screen now, plus some
- 10:26adaptive power things for gaming. Small things,
- 10:29but nice. And these things really matter for
- 10:31just, you know, your daily experience. Call screening
- 10:34saves time, saves annoyance. That adjustable
- 10:37snooze makes mornings just a bit better. Exactly.
- 10:41And the liquid glass look, it changes how your
- 10:43phone feels to use. It's an aesthetic thing,
- 10:45sure. But if you don't like that translucent
- 10:47look? Apple thought of that. In accessibility
- 10:50settings, you can reduce transparency or increase
- 10:53contrast to make things more opaque. Smart. Good
- 10:56to have options. But you mentioned some parts
- 10:58feel unfinished. Yeah, the new games app, for
- 11:01instance. It's meant to be a hub, but it feels
- 11:05half -baked. How so? Well, you still can't delete
- 11:08old games from your library. Even ones that don't
- 11:11work anymore in iOS 26. They just sit there.
- 11:13Oh, that's annoying. Like, digital plutter you
- 11:15can't get rid of? Exactly. I have Crazy Taxi
- 11:18in there. Love that game. Can't play it, can't
- 11:20remove it. Drives me nuts. And you can't see
- 11:22which friends play which games, and it doesn't
- 11:24link up with Steam or anything. Hmm. Yeah, sounds
- 11:27like it needs more work to be a... proper gaming
- 11:29hub anything else feel incomplete visual intelligence
- 11:33it's supposed to let you grab info from photos
- 11:36like add an event to your calendar from a flyer
- 11:39screenshot okay that sounds useful it is when
- 11:42it works right but if there are multiple event
- 11:44listings in the photo it often just grabs the
- 11:46first one or gets the details wrong so you end
- 11:49up having to manually edit it anyway kind of
- 11:51defeats the purpose of the smart feature then
- 11:53right So yeah, some great stuff like call screening,
- 11:56but other areas like the games app and parts
- 11:58of visual intelligence, they still need some
- 12:00polishing. But hey, there are other fun bits
- 12:02too, right? Like the new icon options, tinted
- 12:05or clear. Oh yeah, those are cool. And spatial
- 12:08scenes for 3D photos, upgraded genmoji where
- 12:10you can mash up existing emojis, that's pretty
- 12:13fun to mess with. So a solid update overall,
- 12:16but with some room for improvement, which is...
- 12:18Pretty typical for a .0 release. Exactly. And
- 12:21hey, even the small wins, like the snooze button,
- 12:24sometimes those make the biggest difference day
- 12:26to day, really helping connect those dots in
- 12:28our digital routines. Absolutely. OK, before
- 12:31we sign off, one more thank you to another great
- 12:33new sponsor supporting the show, Skone. Yes,

- 13:08So let's quickly recap the big three today. First,
- 13:11that TikTok framework deal. A huge potential
- 13:14step towards resolving the standoff, bringing
- 13:17relief to users and businesses, but still navigating
- 13:20those tricky U .S.-China dynamics. Then we had
- 13:22Meta's accidental reveal of their next -gen smart
- 13:25glasses, the Ray -Ban display with the HUD and
- 13:27that cool wristband control, plus the athlete
- 13:29-focused Oakley Sphere, pushing wearable AI forward,
- 13:32but definitely kicking up the privacy conversation
- 13:34again. And finally, iOS 26. Lots to like. especially
- 13:38the amazing call screening feature in the new
- 13:41liquid glass look, even if some parts like the
- 13:43games app feel like they need a bit more time
- 13:44in the oven. Practical upgrades alongside some
- 13:47works in progress. We're here to help at Snarful,
