Missouri Prison Research Program Promotes Calmer, Safer Facilities
Four Missouri prisons are trying out a prison reform technique aimed at creating a calmer, safer environment. University of Missouri Social Work Professor Kelli Canada says they’re using methods that worked well in Scandinavian prisons. She says some of the changes are physical- things like softening the paint color in a wing of the prison. She notes a second, and very powerful aspect, involves adjusting the way prison staff and inmates communicate with each other.
