Latest / Direct From Hollywood with Ryan Seacrest / Why Lady Antebellum Decided To Change Their Name to Lady A
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Direct from Hollywood Seacrest. After much reflection over the last
- 0:05Speaker 1: couple of weeks, superstar country trio Lady Amabellum has decided
- 0:07Speaker 1: to change their names, shortening it to Lady A, after
- 0:10Speaker 1: discussions with black colleagues and friends led to the realization
- 0:13Speaker 1: that their band name was a bit problematic. The word
- 0:16Speaker 1: anabellum is a Latin derivative translating literally to before war,
- 0:20Speaker 1: but it refers to the South, pre Civil War, before
- 0:23Speaker 1: the end of slavery. They explained, when we set out
- 0:25Speaker 1: together almost fourteen years ago, we named our band after
- 0:28Speaker 1: the Southern Anabellum style home where we took our first photos.
- 0:32Speaker 1: It reminded us of all the music born in the
- 0:34Speaker 1: South that influenced us, Southern rock, blues, R and B, gospel,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and of course country. But we are regretful and embarrassed
- 0:40Speaker 1: to say that we did not take into account the
- 0:42Speaker 1: associations that weighed down. This word, which includes slavery causing pain,
- 0:46Speaker 1: was never our heart's intention, but it doesn't change the
- 0:49Speaker 1: fact that it did just that. So today we make
- 0:51Speaker 1: a change much more In Lady A's note posted up
- 0:55Speaker 1: in full on air with Ryan dot Com that's direct
- 0:58Speaker 1: from Hollywood,
