- 0:00Speaker 1: My next This is the vice is the vice President
- 0:02Speaker 1: of Multicultural Leadership for African American Black Strategy and Outreach
- 0:06Speaker 1: at a a r P. She serves as the national
- 0:10Speaker 1: board for a RPS engagement with African American and Black
- 0:13Speaker 1: communities throughout through partnerships with multicultural organizations to drive a
- 0:19Speaker 1: ARP social impact. Please, welcome to Money Making Conversations, Shaney Houston.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you for trying, for having me, and
- 0:30Speaker 1: it is such a pleasure to join the Money Making
- 0:34Speaker 1: Conversations today. Thank you so much. Well, then let's talk
- 0:37Speaker 1: about you. I want to talk about it. First of all,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I am a member Omega Sci Fi Fraternity Incorporated. And
- 0:45Speaker 1: I was reading your bio and you are a member
- 0:47Speaker 1: of a k A. I am a proud member of
- 0:51Speaker 1: Alpha Capital Authority Incorporated. Well for thirty years. I just
- 0:56Speaker 1: celebrated my thirty year anniversary. Actually, well that's awesome. It's
- 1:01Speaker 1: so funny because I I I played in one, so
- 1:07Speaker 1: I got a few years in the in the fraternal
- 1:09Speaker 1: world over you, which is cool. And I got my
- 1:12Speaker 1: for the New Year's City celebration flying uh four, my
- 1:15Speaker 1: three Lion brothers and another fraternity brother. We won't spend
- 1:18Speaker 1: New Year's Eve together in Atlanta. Just a part of life.
- 1:20Speaker 1: You know, these people that you don't know, you go
- 1:23Speaker 1: to college and they become a part of your your
- 1:25Speaker 1: emotional base for the rest of your life. And that's
- 1:28Speaker 1: why I wanted to bring that up. And because I
- 1:30Speaker 1: know you you feel the same way. It's uh, you
- 1:34Speaker 1: know it is. It is really a gift um the
- 1:37Speaker 1: souroty I really get emotionally even talking about it. My
- 1:40Speaker 1: line sisters mean everything to me. We have been through
- 1:44Speaker 1: so much together. We continue to have a bond after
- 1:47Speaker 1: thirty years, and that's what the beauty of it, um is.
- 1:50Speaker 1: We went to our homecoming, we played that I played
- 1:53Speaker 1: at Hampton University, proud member of Gamma Stated chapter. And
- 1:58Speaker 1: we went back for homecoming this year and uh last
- 2:02Speaker 1: Pride eight together, had just a great time spending time
- 2:07Speaker 1: just catching up and we picked right back up where
- 2:09Speaker 1: we you know, where we were thirty years ago. But
- 2:12Speaker 1: what we do is really just trying to be there
- 2:14Speaker 1: for one another because those those that our friendships and
- 2:17Speaker 1: bonds are truly truly priceless. You know, it's really right,
- 2:20Speaker 1: It's really great when I hear you talk like this.
- 2:22Speaker 1: My executive producer of money making conversation. She's a graduate
- 2:25Speaker 1: of Hampton. So as soon as you say to Hampton,
- 2:27Speaker 1: you know, she started dancing in the boom. Okay, let
- 2:30Speaker 1: you know that every time, and I'm tearousing. It's a
- 2:32Speaker 1: lot of hampton has got it going on because like
- 2:34Speaker 1: and if you're a lot of successful Keptonians Captonians, you know,
- 2:38Speaker 1: she she corrected me, Hamptonians got it going on. So
- 2:42Speaker 1: let's move on. F from your pro graduate of HBCU Boom,
- 2:46Speaker 1: A proud member of AffA Serati Incoperated from Hampton University
- 2:53Speaker 1: thirty years in fact. So let's talk about your role
- 2:56Speaker 1: as Vice president of Multicultural Leadership for African American Strategy
- 3:00Speaker 1: and Outreach at a RP. What exactly is that? So
- 3:05Speaker 1: I am immensely blessed to lead our African American and
- 3:09Speaker 1: Black strategy work at a r P. I've have been
- 3:13Speaker 1: um uh colleague here at a ARP for about four
- 3:16Speaker 1: years now, and uh, this role is really sometimes I
- 3:20Speaker 1: have to pinch myself for Sean. It really gives me
- 3:23Speaker 1: the opportunity to um really share my my strengths, my talent,
- 3:29Speaker 1: my gifts that I've been given that to really share
- 3:33Speaker 1: information to have the African American audience, and uh so
- 3:36Speaker 1: so at a ARP, we have a full multicultural team
- 3:41Speaker 1: that's led by my boss ed Nicine Williams. She's our
- 3:44Speaker 1: senior vice president of multi cultural Leadership. And while I
- 3:48Speaker 1: lead our African American and Black strategy out of a
- 3:51Speaker 1: counterpart who leads our Asian American Pacific Islander work, I
- 3:55Speaker 1: have another counterpart who leads our Hispanic Latino work, another
- 3:59Speaker 1: counter art who leads our LGBT work, and another counterpart
- 4:03Speaker 1: who leads our um Alaskan Native American Indian work. So
- 4:08Speaker 1: we really and infuse multicultural in everything we do. And
- 4:13Speaker 1: that's a part of our CEO's Joe and Jenkins mission
- 4:17Speaker 1: for a r P is to really infuse and embed
- 4:20Speaker 1: multicultural in everything that we do across the association. Um,
- 4:25Speaker 1: because our our you know, population, our membership is multicultural.
- 4:30Speaker 1: We are living in a multicultural world, and so we
- 4:33Speaker 1: have general market campaigns, but our group really is charged
- 4:38Speaker 1: with creating the culturally relevant information and showing up in communities. Um.
- 4:44Speaker 1: You know, we are based in Washington, d C. Where
- 4:47Speaker 1: sixty plus year old organization that's that's really been uh
- 4:53Speaker 1: you know, the nation's largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organizations for over
- 4:57Speaker 1: sixty years. But what we try to do on on
- 5:00Speaker 1: our team, and I'm on the cultural team, is to
- 5:02Speaker 1: be in community and to create materials and resources um
- 5:07Speaker 1: to reach our specific audience. So I have that opportunity
- 5:11Speaker 1: to be able to do that for the African American
- 5:13Speaker 1: and Black Strategy at Work audience, which I think is
- 5:16Speaker 1: really important because of the fact that you know, I'm
- 5:18Speaker 1: gonna tell you some you know I you know I have.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'm very much aware of the brand of a ARP.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I've been tied in radio and sponsorship opportunities since two
- 5:28Speaker 1: thousand when I came into radio and I was managing
- 5:30Speaker 1: Steve Harvest, So we've had some great partnerships with a
- 5:33Speaker 1: ARP and it's been always I love about a r
- 5:38Speaker 1: P is that what bothers me about people as they
- 5:41Speaker 1: tend to age, they tend to be let age take
- 5:44Speaker 1: over them, and a r P that's not. That's not
- 5:48Speaker 1: the brand. It's about living. It's about it's about and
- 5:51Speaker 1: I really like the fact that in the last people
- 5:53Speaker 1: generally to get the information or the or the minority communities,
- 5:57Speaker 1: you know, about the options, the the experience life, the
- 6:01Speaker 1: insurance opportunities, all these the travel opportunities, the the the
- 6:05Speaker 1: discounts that are available through a ARP. So let's talk
- 6:08Speaker 1: about that. That getting that information to the minority communities,
- 6:13Speaker 1: why it's so important for a r P a RP
- 6:17Speaker 1: and then that's that's exactly right, UM, because the more
- 6:21Speaker 1: you know, the more you can be excited. We're all
- 6:24Speaker 1: are going to age. There are ten thousand people turning
- 6:27Speaker 1: sixty five each and every day, and we're we're aging
- 6:31Speaker 1: as a society, and so we're all going to age.
- 6:34Speaker 1: We're living longer, we're having bonus years of life because
- 6:39Speaker 1: of the advancements and healthcare and UM, and we're just
- 6:43Speaker 1: living longer. And so if we're living longer, we need
- 6:46Speaker 1: to make sure that we're not outliving our our income.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And so that's what we tried to make sure that
- 6:53Speaker 1: we're advocating for UM legislation that would help the lives
- 6:58Speaker 1: of those that are fifty plus, particular in in an
- 7:00Speaker 1: African American community where we tend to have disparities we have,
- 7:05Speaker 1: whether it's health disparities, work, pay gap disparities, you name it.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Our audience and our communities really suffer from disparities that
- 7:16Speaker 1: stem backs uh, you know, years and years, and what
- 7:20Speaker 1: we're trying to do is close those disparities gap by
- 7:23Speaker 1: providing information to the apportant American community so we can
- 7:26Speaker 1: live longer, healthier, more productive lives as we all age.
- 7:31Speaker 1: And the more information you have, the more you can
- 7:34Speaker 1: feel empowered to make those smart decisions for yourself. And
- 7:38Speaker 1: the earlier you learned, uh gives you even more time
- 7:42Speaker 1: to be able to do that. And so a lot
- 7:44Speaker 1: of our information now, while a RP focuses on the
- 7:48Speaker 1: fifty plus, we are actually UM in the African American community,
- 7:52Speaker 1: we're tailoring a lot of our information to younger populations.
- 7:56Speaker 1: We know that the millennial generation, a lot of the
- 8:00Speaker 1: millennials are, especially in the African American community, are serving
- 8:05Speaker 1: in caregiver roles taking care of loved ones. And so
- 8:09Speaker 1: as a millennial, what's what some of the information that
- 8:11Speaker 1: you need to to know, um to help continue, you know,
- 8:15Speaker 1: to make smart decisions as you're aging, you're working and progressing,
- 8:19Speaker 1: but you also um, you know, need to take care
- 8:22Speaker 1: of that parents or loved one. What are some of
- 8:25Speaker 1: the things you need to have in place, um UM
- 8:27Speaker 1: to help your family? And it's really important when I
- 8:30Speaker 1: when I listen to you how you talk, you know,
- 8:32Speaker 1: there's a lot of emotion tied to it. And before
- 8:34Speaker 1: we go to the break, I just want to point
- 8:36Speaker 1: this out, is that I always tell people you look
- 8:38Speaker 1: at commercials and and you talk about aging. And then
- 8:40Speaker 1: let's say that you said that every day there's ten
- 8:43Speaker 1: thousand reaching the age of sixty five, that's an amazing number.
- 8:47Speaker 1: And when you look at the commercials on TV and
- 8:49Speaker 1: never talked about that parent, the aging parents. You talk
- 8:52Speaker 1: about the college education for your kids. They're talking about
- 8:55Speaker 1: your retirement. But nobody looks for whatever. And that's the
- 8:57Speaker 1: part of life right now. There's shocking so many people
- 9:01Speaker 1: who didn't see it coming, didn't understand that I may
- 9:05Speaker 1: have to financially support my mom, who's my child's grandmother.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And so so this conversation we have it right now
- 9:12Speaker 1: is important because it's applies so much information, and information
- 9:16Speaker 1: is important because it guess what the minority communists are
- 9:19Speaker 1: the last to get it and who in turn suffers
- 9:21Speaker 1: the most that minority communities. We're gonna be right back
- 9:24Speaker 1: with more information. My guest is Saney Houston. She's listening
- 9:27Speaker 1: to everyone. She's she's given information on our show today
- 9:32Speaker 1: about retirement. How do you prepare for retirement? I don't
- 9:37Speaker 1: know how to prepare. I don't know how I can
- 9:39Speaker 1: tell people, honestly how to get ready. But you have
- 9:42Speaker 1: a campaign that's coming up, Miss Houston, that's really gonna
- 9:45Speaker 1: lay out, and it's called and to tell us about
- 9:47Speaker 1: the campaign that you have coming up? Sure you know
- 9:51Speaker 1: the the new campaign we just launched in October. It's
- 9:55Speaker 1: called the Trivia to she Roes. And this isn't a
- 9:58Speaker 1: campaign that a RP partnered with the account right. We're
- 10:03Speaker 1: partnered with the accounts And we've had a long relationship
- 10:06Speaker 1: with the AD Council for a number of years on
- 10:09Speaker 1: creating public service announcements around caregiving. And we launched a
- 10:13Speaker 1: general market campaign in two seventeen UH called Asia Retirement
- 10:18Speaker 1: helping the general market UH save and become become competent
- 10:23Speaker 1: and prepared for retirement. But our new campaign that we
- 10:26Speaker 1: just launched, and I'm so excited about it, it's a
- 10:29Speaker 1: campaign called Asia Retirement. Sheiros a tribute to our sheiroes
- 10:34Speaker 1: and the goal of the campaign. And it's so special
- 10:37Speaker 1: because the campaign was created by marketing communications firm called
- 10:42Speaker 1: Joy collective and it was created bad Black Women for
- 10:46Speaker 1: Black women, and it's really a campaign to help black
- 10:49Speaker 1: women field empowered and prepared as we approached saving for retirements,
- 10:55Speaker 1: for our what next. And the campaign is designed to
- 10:59Speaker 1: promote online resources and it's that as your retirement dot
- 11:04Speaker 1: org slash she ro at h g r oh and
- 11:09Speaker 1: it's uh. It's a free it's a free tool that
- 11:12Speaker 1: you can log on and it gives you personalized retirement
- 11:16Speaker 1: saving tips. And you know what's really neat about and
- 11:20Speaker 1: is personal for me, is that we as black women,
- 11:22Speaker 1: we take care of ourselves, our families, our communities, and
- 11:27Speaker 1: we generally, um, you know, save ourselves for last. But
- 11:31Speaker 1: now it's time for us to take care of ourselves.
- 11:35Speaker 1: We deserve to be happy, feel prepared and and empowered
- 11:39Speaker 1: as we approach our our later years or savings for
- 11:43Speaker 1: retirement and sort of our what's next. And we want
- 11:46Speaker 1: to celebrate that with the work that we do. And
- 11:50Speaker 1: this with that's what the campaign really designed is designed
- 11:53Speaker 1: to do. The tribute to she Rose highlights resources that
- 11:57Speaker 1: can help black women boost their retire Ironman saving and
- 12:02Speaker 1: uh and and playing for our futures are what's next.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And it may not be retirement. It maybe um turning
- 12:08Speaker 1: your side hustle into your or your passion into your
- 12:11Speaker 1: permanent UM you know, career if you will, But what
- 12:14Speaker 1: do you need to do and what are the steps
- 12:16Speaker 1: you can take now to be prepared to enable you
- 12:20Speaker 1: to do that? Now? The marketing agents in this houseton
- 12:22Speaker 1: the marketing agents, and you've chosen your collective. You're good
- 12:26Speaker 1: friends with their founder, Kelly Jr. Richardson Lawson, So you know,
- 12:30Speaker 1: you get you get an a rating right there from
- 12:32Speaker 1: Rushan McDonald. Kelly and I go all the way back
- 12:35Speaker 1: to the b T days when she was working at
- 12:37Speaker 1: B E. T and uh and uh. So I know
- 12:40Speaker 1: the enthusiasm and I just want to in this interview,
- 12:42Speaker 1: I want to Mark, I want to just compliment you
- 12:44Speaker 1: on your energy and your your ability to articate what
- 12:48Speaker 1: you're trying to do in a very authentic way, because
- 12:51Speaker 1: what I'm just telling people, one of the big beasts
- 12:54Speaker 1: I have about my retirement is that there's no preparation
- 12:59Speaker 1: because somehow in our mind we see sixty five as
- 13:02Speaker 1: the as the cut off point, and so there's some
- 13:05Speaker 1: golden there's some golden check that we've been made to
- 13:08Speaker 1: believe it's gonna take care of our lifestyle when we
- 13:11Speaker 1: hit that point. And that's not true. That's not true.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And that's the whole purpose of saving for retirement. That's
- 13:16Speaker 1: the whole purpose of what you guys doing with the
- 13:18Speaker 1: Sheroes campaign. It said, look, and that's what you said
- 13:21Speaker 1: earlier before the break you said, look, ro Sean, we're
- 13:23Speaker 1: even going back, you know, to millennials and getting them
- 13:26Speaker 1: motivated to the process. Because I'll be honest with you,
- 13:29Speaker 1: that's when I started savings. I remember my twenties. This
- 13:32Speaker 1: guy approached me and he was a co worker and
- 13:34Speaker 1: he was saying, ras, Shan, you need to just say
- 13:36Speaker 1: fifty dollars a month, you know. And that was a
- 13:38Speaker 1: struggle for me. Fifty dollars really, you know, because I couldn't.
- 13:42Speaker 1: I couldn't. It was a struggle for me because I
- 13:45Speaker 1: can't see what fifty dollars will grow to, you know what,
- 13:49Speaker 1: what what the opportunity. And they're realizing that that it's
- 13:53Speaker 1: all about accumulation and there's all about dollar costs. Averaging
- 13:56Speaker 1: is all about participating. So if you're saving a thousand
- 13:59Speaker 1: dollars a year, just say, if you say the thousand
- 14:02Speaker 1: dollars for thirty years. There's thirty tho dollars. Okay, there's
- 14:05Speaker 1: thirty dollars. That's a lot of money. Okay when you
- 14:09Speaker 1: when you look at it. And so the process that
- 14:10Speaker 1: you're talking about is the same thing is just so
- 14:13Speaker 1: just start and then you can go online and you
- 14:16Speaker 1: can see how the growth of your investment can happen
- 14:20Speaker 1: if you do it a certain way correct, right, and
- 14:23Speaker 1: and that's the beauty of it. UM. And I again,
- 14:26Speaker 1: I also want to to think Kelly and the team
- 14:29Speaker 1: enjoy collective. It was just rewarding working on the campaign
- 14:33Speaker 1: UM with UM just amazingly talented black women from UM,
- 14:38Speaker 1: from joy, from the director, the production company. Was truly
- 14:43Speaker 1: a campaign created black by black women for black women
- 14:46Speaker 1: that really felt passionate about this because what we know
- 14:50Speaker 1: is that African American black women, we typically have to
- 14:53Speaker 1: work seven to eight months to earn what our white
- 14:57Speaker 1: male counterpart make in one year. And so we know
- 15:00Speaker 1: that equity paid gap. So in addition to the information
- 15:05Speaker 1: not getting to the communities UM at the same rate
- 15:09Speaker 1: or with the same access that other communities can get,
- 15:12Speaker 1: we also know that there's a pay gap that exists.
- 15:15Speaker 1: And so if we don't start sharing this information now
- 15:18Speaker 1: and empowering black women, then will continue to have that gap.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And so that's really the design of the campaign. And
- 15:26Speaker 1: when you go online again, it's a free uh three
- 15:30Speaker 1: minutes digital coaching sessions. I'm online, I'm reading it right now.
- 15:34Speaker 1: I'm online. It's time to pay yourself more for retirement.
- 15:37Speaker 1: A free three minute chat the friendly digital retirement coach
- 15:41Speaker 1: will give you the tips you need to help boost
- 15:43Speaker 1: your savings. Oh this is this is looking good already,
- 15:47Speaker 1: I'll she wrote, right, and we will. And we again
- 15:50Speaker 1: wanted to make sure that black women that we see
- 15:53Speaker 1: ourselves in our ads, and we do that across a RP.
- 15:57Speaker 1: As I mentioned, we have a full multi cultural him
- 16:00Speaker 1: and in our ads and our creative materials, we want
- 16:03Speaker 1: to make sure that it's resonating and that it's culturally relevant,
- 16:07Speaker 1: that it speaks to our audiences. And so that's what
- 16:11Speaker 1: this campaign tribute to she rose does. It really honors
- 16:15Speaker 1: black women. And you'll see in the different uh, the
- 16:18Speaker 1: different creative ads, whether it's the mom cooking and taking
- 16:22Speaker 1: care of her family, whether she's the wife, or whether
- 16:25Speaker 1: it's um, you know, a woman who's coming from work
- 16:28Speaker 1: and has a side hustle and and and you know
- 16:31Speaker 1: the yoga and the community center that eventually you know,
- 16:34Speaker 1: is able to save and get her own uh you
- 16:37Speaker 1: know yoga studio. And that's sort of you know, her
- 16:39Speaker 1: her turning her passion, you know, into her purpose. Um.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I love the campaign just hearing you talk about the
- 16:47Speaker 1: campaign because they're talking about entrepreneurship. It's talking about it's
- 16:50Speaker 1: talking about the forty hour week mall. You know what
- 16:52Speaker 1: I'm saying, the responsibility of delivery and being responsible. But
- 16:57Speaker 1: the thing about it, when I went to the website,
- 16:59Speaker 1: you know, it's called ww dot a sure retirement dot org,
- 17:03Speaker 1: Forward slash Hero. You know, I saw three different women
- 17:06Speaker 1: there and one of the women were younger, was a
- 17:09Speaker 1: young younger woman. And I bring that up because it's
- 17:12Speaker 1: you know, I got a twenty to your daughter. I
- 17:13Speaker 1: constantly talked to her and just just give her information
- 17:17Speaker 1: because that information, when you're telling a younger person, young
- 17:19Speaker 1: person something, they might not get it, but hopefully a
- 17:22Speaker 1: year or the five years in that process of but
- 17:26Speaker 1: trying to figure it out, they will get it. And
- 17:29Speaker 1: so I saw that photo as what you're trying to say,
- 17:32Speaker 1: You're saying look, Roshan, we were creating a campaign so
- 17:35Speaker 1: we can capture generational people so they can move forward
- 17:40Speaker 1: and they all win, and not just a person who's
- 17:43Speaker 1: near retirement, a person who's past retirement. We're trying to
- 17:47Speaker 1: educate people by by creating this this this, Like I
- 17:50Speaker 1: said earlier, in the twenties, I was approached and now
- 17:53Speaker 1: it wasn't until I was thirty two that I actually
- 17:55Speaker 1: started saving money. And I went to Merrill Lynch and
- 17:58Speaker 1: I just started and you know, and ask in a
- 18:00Speaker 1: little bit in stock. And that has paid off for
- 18:02Speaker 1: me because I did start at such an early age.
- 18:06Speaker 1: And so it's really important that people understand that what
- 18:09Speaker 1: you're pitching is opportunity, education and financial freedom exactly and
- 18:16Speaker 1: exactly and and it's never too late, you know. UM
- 18:20Speaker 1: and you know one of the things. And we did
- 18:22Speaker 1: our research for the campaign, and we did market research
- 18:25Speaker 1: and we talked to women, you know, in different parts
- 18:28Speaker 1: of the country. We uh, we wanted to create a
- 18:31Speaker 1: campaign that was empowering and that UM a tool that
- 18:35Speaker 1: really meets you where you are. So UM, when you
- 18:39Speaker 1: log on again Asia retirement dot org slash SIRO, you
- 18:44Speaker 1: can u put in information. It'll The digital culch will
