- 2:08Speaker 1: That's where the International park come from. The legend of
- 2:10Speaker 1: blood So BBQ begins in Coursal count of Texas. That's
- 2:13Speaker 1: right south of Dallas, Texas. The reason I know I'm
- 2:16Speaker 1: from Houston, Texas, so I passed through coastal Kalna many times.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I get up to Dallas.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Come on now where the Bloodso family has been perfecting
- 2:23Speaker 1: the craft of slow smoke.

- 3:02Speaker 3: I am good. Hey, after that introduction, I'm just interview over.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I'm good. I'm over here smiling the windows.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I had to because I see you post a leg
- 3:12Speaker 1: on the on the on social media.
- 3:13Speaker 2: You're gonna be talking to the legend on Thursday. I
- 3:15Speaker 2: saw that on social media. I just smile.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I took a let me just let me. Let me
- 3:20Speaker 3: make it perfectly clear. I would not be doing probably
- 3:22Speaker 3: none of this extra stuff if it wasn't so winning
- 3:25Speaker 3: that first Hoodie award. Man, I would never forget that.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I remember talking to you backstage. It was so cool
- 3:32Speaker 3: and it was like I always knew you in Steve too.
- 3:36Speaker 3: But when me and you hollered backstage and then you
- 3:38Speaker 3: came and gave me the hug, I was like, damn,
- 3:40Speaker 3: have my man here be fos. I just want to say, man,
- 3:42Speaker 3: and I have life. And I mean, you told me
- 3:45Speaker 3: something that night, and I don't know if you remember,
- 3:47Speaker 3: but you said you're gonna be all right, always look
- 3:50Speaker 3: out for your folks.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You remember you told me absolutely, absolutely absolutely, I believe
- 3:54Speaker 2: in that.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I believe it that man, you know, and I just
- 3:57Speaker 3: want to say, man, I appreciate you. I appreciate everything,
- 4:00Speaker 3: and you guys have done for me, man, And I
- 4:02Speaker 3: really really missed the Hoodie Awards. I really do because
- 4:06Speaker 3: win I lose. It was so much fun, man, how
- 4:09Speaker 3: y'all take normal folks from the neighborhood and made us
- 4:14Speaker 3: feel incredible every time for those three or four days. Man,
- 4:17Speaker 3: I just always wanted to thank you guys. Man, it
- 4:19Speaker 3: was an incredible time. It was an incredible ride. And
- 4:22Speaker 3: even because I think I went to like six straight
- 4:24Speaker 3: or sound, absolutely can remember.
- 4:26Speaker 1: We had those little meet and greets and all that stuffer.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Oh man, the green room in there because.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Walk your red co Don't forget Kevin walked the red
- 4:37Speaker 2: corp for that.
- 4:38Speaker 3: The red red carpet and to get my first one
- 4:42Speaker 3: for uh what was Sally Richard and uh Bernie Mack
- 4:46Speaker 3: and he was I'm not Bernie Mack. George Wallace clowning
- 4:49Speaker 3: for thirty minutes and my pants falling down and everything. Man, memories, man,
- 4:54Speaker 3: I chairs the real toe.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Oh you know, so I have the video of of
- 5:00Speaker 1: your winning. I don't know if you have that. I'm
- 5:01Speaker 1: an send it to you, man, Pae'm sending to you.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I got them all. I got that time. History of
- 5:08Speaker 2: the Hoodie Awards slash neighborhood.
- 5:10Speaker 1: But you know something, Kevin, is the thing about it
- 5:13Speaker 1: is that that's what it was all about.
- 5:15Speaker 2: It's always been about the people.
- 5:16Speaker 1: It's always were recognizing the regular people, because you know,
- 5:20Speaker 1: we get so we get become like unknown, we get burdened,
- 5:24Speaker 1: like we're not even delivering a contributing And that's all
- 5:27Speaker 1: I was telling you back to say take care of
- 5:28Speaker 1: your people. Because what we didn't know, you know Steve
- 5:31Speaker 1: already I didn't know at the time, was that we
- 5:34Speaker 1: you know, I started this in Houston, Texas in nineteen
- 5:36Speaker 1: ninety seven just as a I was a sidekick on
- 5:38Speaker 1: the radio show. And then what happened was Steve came,
- 5:41Speaker 1: we got the radio gig in La. He said, we shan,
- 5:43Speaker 1: did you uhould do that hoodie war thing? I think
- 5:45Speaker 1: I got to be big, And you know, I would
- 5:47Speaker 1: never as a as an individual, I could never just
- 5:50Speaker 1: go to the radio station.
- 5:51Speaker 2: But Steve was big enough to say, let's do this,
- 5:54Speaker 2: let's do that.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I gotta give credit what credit is due and they
- 5:56Speaker 1: wouldn't know, and they sold it, and we sold the idea.
- 5:59Speaker 1: We would to Vegas several times with the Forum several
- 6:03Speaker 1: times and then we went back to Vegas. And so
- 6:07Speaker 1: when you when you talk about it, you know, because
- 6:09Speaker 1: what I didn't see coming was how it affected the business,
- 6:13Speaker 1: how enabled you can talk about how the Hoody Awards
- 6:16Speaker 1: affected you guys with all that promotions.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Steve Holland it out on them. Here's the nominees, here's
- 6:21Speaker 2: the nominees. Here's the top four, here's the top four.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Talk about that.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I mean, the pride that it. I mean, it's like
- 6:30Speaker 3: people still to this day just talk about when it
- 6:32Speaker 3: was time to vote the first vote in the second vote,
- 6:35Speaker 3: and how geniuses was the way y'all put that together
- 6:38Speaker 3: to have the first vote in the second vote. But
- 6:41Speaker 3: then the pride of bringing people together and people just
- 6:44Speaker 3: wanting to be part of that. And then when you
- 6:46Speaker 3: win and bring it home. Man, it's like in the neighborhood,
- 6:49Speaker 3: it's like, you know, winning the national championship. You know,
- 6:52Speaker 3: everybody want to come and so many people would wait
- 6:57Speaker 3: to hear if you won. And I mean, I mean,
- 6:59Speaker 3: we had customers cry when we lost.
- 7:02Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 7:03Speaker 3: And uh, it's that I mean because like I said,
- 7:05Speaker 3: you don't have that much Like I said, you don't
- 7:08Speaker 3: have that many shows that do that especially. I mean,
- 7:11Speaker 3: we barely got enough for real celebrities that they give
- 7:14Speaker 3: prompts to to have, you know, the normal hard work
- 7:17Speaker 3: and people trying to run their businesses and all that,
- 7:19Speaker 3: doing their thing and getting award and and like I said,
- 7:22Speaker 3: getting award from Sally Sally Richards and George Wallace and
- 7:27Speaker 3: the people I met backstage and just the whole thing, man,
- 7:30Speaker 3: is incredible. Man. I mean, it was a It was
- 7:33Speaker 3: a real beautiful time, man. And it's just the pride
- 7:35Speaker 3: that it brings and in the customers that you get.
- 7:38Speaker 3: If you notice everything that I do, every show that
- 7:41Speaker 3: I say that I do, they say about winning the
- 7:44Speaker 3: Hoodie Award, no matter what they always say in Canada,
- 7:47Speaker 3: Australia and whatever. Like the lady told the Woody, I said,
- 7:50Speaker 3: it's the hoodie you know all over I always gee
- 7:54Speaker 3: a proper man. Because, like I said, that was just
- 7:57Speaker 3: a real exciting time man.
- 7:59Speaker 1: It was real, you know, and thank you, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 1: because of the fact that the whole idea man, was
- 8:05Speaker 1: to celebrate the real stars of the community. That was
- 8:08Speaker 1: the basis of the Movie Awards in the Neighborhood Awards.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Because of the fact that and my whole thought was that, Okay,
- 8:14Speaker 1: instead of have the celebrities being recognized for honor, let's
- 8:17Speaker 1: use the celebrities. It's almost like props to get people there,
- 8:21Speaker 1: because you know, if we said that we were just gonna
- 8:23Speaker 1: be doing best barbecue, best high school, would't nobody show up?
- 8:26Speaker 1: But you got Steve Lovinholst, and you got the Sally
- 8:28Speaker 1: just just Sally Richardson's on stage. You got the George
- 8:31Speaker 1: Wallace on stage, you got Swoop Dog Ice Q showed
- 8:35Speaker 1: up one year, Magic Johnson showed up.
- 8:38Speaker 2: When you get all these people, people going whoa, whoa,
- 8:40Speaker 2: what's going on here? What's going on here?
- 8:42Speaker 3: And this will allow us to be back like like
- 8:44Speaker 3: in the green like before.
- 8:45Speaker 5: The wars, in the greenroom with them, you know, having cocktails.
- 8:50Speaker 3: It's just like and everybody interacting. Man, it was incredible, man,
- 8:54Speaker 3: Like I said to even the walkers to the not
- 8:58Speaker 3: just the red carpet, when we walked through the casino
- 9:01Speaker 3: or whatever, going inside getting ready to call in and
- 9:04Speaker 3: walking inside that arena, man, that was like.
- 9:06Speaker 2: That was that was that was major?
- 9:09Speaker 3: Did that was?
- 9:10Speaker 1: That was major because I you know the thing about
- 9:12Speaker 1: it I would not share note I was and people
- 9:14Speaker 1: come in there. Go, man, this is produced better than
- 9:16Speaker 1: the immages, Dude, this is produced better.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Than because I because I had to do that. The
- 9:21Speaker 2: worst thing in the world, man.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Is for us as black people, you know, to say
- 9:24Speaker 1: you're gonna do something good for us and didn't do
- 9:26Speaker 1: it half.
- 9:28Speaker 2: I didn't do it slopping.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And that's what that was my greatest love, man, because
- 9:32Speaker 1: to see the look on y'all faces because y'all didn't
- 9:34Speaker 1: believe it. Okay, this will always chump me out, man.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It was those acceptance species. I wasn't ready for that, Kevin,
- 9:39Speaker 1: So I wasn't ready for because I told Steve Harrison, look, man,
- 9:43Speaker 1: I got the fact we're gonna nominate him.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I got the fact we're gonna vote. Vote. I said,
- 9:47Speaker 2: I don't know what they're gonna say when they get
- 9:49Speaker 2: up there.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Y'all got up there, man, and it was like they
- 9:53Speaker 1: brought me to tears many times, man, because I didn't realize.
- 9:56Speaker 2: The impact of a of a war. A community award,
- 10:00Speaker 2: that's what it was.
- 10:00Speaker 1: It was a community award and how it affected And
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know when I because I always like, you know,
- 10:06Speaker 1: because I was a regular guy. Steve was still a
- 10:08Speaker 1: star you know, way back then. But I could go
- 10:10Speaker 1: to a restaurant and I went by your place one
- 10:13Speaker 1: time back in the hood. And when and then and
- 10:15Speaker 1: then I found out my girl, Candy, he uhould do
- 10:18Speaker 1: my backstage celebrity uh streaming.
- 10:21Speaker 2: She said.
- 10:21Speaker 1: She said, Shank Shank, Kevin is on the brea, I said.
- 10:27Speaker 1: She said, he got a spot on the bre I.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Didn't even know Kevin. I didn't even know you had that.
- 10:31Speaker 3: She was so candy, so cool. That's my baby sister now. Man,
- 10:34Speaker 3: she is so cool, always so professional, man, and just incredible,
- 10:40Speaker 3: you know. I mean, your whole staff was just like
- 10:44Speaker 3: you know, oh man, I mean and I remember you
- 10:46Speaker 3: guys came out and did the video of me, uh
- 10:49Speaker 3: and I was still in content, man, And I didn't
- 10:51Speaker 3: even know what you know, Candy, don't give no information.
- 10:54Speaker 3: You know, I can find my we have something.
- 10:58Speaker 5: So she said, boy, you think I'm gonna lose my
- 10:59Speaker 5: job over you know? So she said about the video
- 11:03Speaker 5: when y'all did the video, she said, well, she well,
- 11:06Speaker 5: I don't want to say she lied, but she lies. Oh,
- 11:08Speaker 5: we do this with all the contestants, with people don't
- 11:10Speaker 5: get on the video. And at the lunch and then
- 11:13Speaker 5: I was on the lunch and I didn't even know
- 11:14Speaker 5: till I got there. You know, I mean, everything y'all
- 11:17Speaker 5: did was it was just it was it was for
- 11:20Speaker 5: even like the waiting like like like, and that first time,
- 11:24Speaker 5: I mean, I'm I'm nervous. I'm sweating like a brother
- 11:27Speaker 5: out of clan with a white woman. You know what
- 11:29Speaker 5: I'm saying. I'm sweating and nervous. And I said, man,
- 11:31Speaker 5: I ain't been this nervousness football days. And it was
- 11:34Speaker 5: just uh and and I'm not even putting too much
- 11:37Speaker 5: on it, man. It was other contestants that I met,
- 11:40Speaker 5: and then the friendships the people that I met from
- 11:42Speaker 5: other businesses that we are still good friends to this day.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Man. That's what That's what it's all about. Man. I mean,
- 11:47Speaker 3: I hear like the morning show sometimes and I get
- 11:51Speaker 3: nervous because I remember during the time when it's voting time,
- 11:54Speaker 3: because you know, we have urged the coast got us
- 11:57Speaker 3: about a few hours and they haven't already started. But
- 11:59Speaker 3: just that one year, it was six forty five, they
- 12:03Speaker 3: was about to go off the air and uh, and
- 12:05Speaker 3: it was this crypt Tom he said that he was
- 12:08Speaker 3: doing the Top three or whatever. The top four, and
- 12:10Speaker 3: we was number three already in time that Steve said,
- 12:13Speaker 3: now that's a Now that don't make no sense. BLUs
- 12:15Speaker 3: those number three them brothers in LA. That's right.
- 12:19Speaker 2: So this's I'm gonna explain everybody.
- 12:20Speaker 1: See what happened was from two thousand and one to
- 12:22Speaker 1: two thousand and five.
- 12:23Speaker 2: We were in LA. It was an LA based radio station.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Steve off in ninety two four to three, and Kevin
- 12:29Speaker 1: and all everybody was in LA. So in two thousand
- 12:31Speaker 1: and five we left and went to New York. Were
- 12:33Speaker 1: based in New York for two years. So for one
- 12:36Speaker 1: year we took a year off. Two thousand and six,
- 12:38Speaker 1: we didn't even do it. We didn't even do it,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and we were trying to figure out what we had
- 12:41Speaker 1: to do with our own career. We were struggling to
- 12:43Speaker 1: try to come up after that run. And then two
- 12:45Speaker 1: thousand and seven we brought it back and so were
- 12:48Speaker 1: freakd Me and Steve. I was like, okay, they in LA,
- 12:52Speaker 1: and so you know you guys, and like you said,
- 12:54Speaker 1: y'all were three hours difference and y'all were voting.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Y'all was seriously voting.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Evan, Yeah, yeah, yeah, we had them Uh, we had everybody,
- 13:04Speaker 3: every old college people, everywhere, everybody we knew all over
- 13:07Speaker 3: the United States. We had them going.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Man.
- 13:09Speaker 3: But like I said, and you'd be surprised how many
- 13:12Speaker 3: people still come and tell me how much they missed that. Yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 3: and I missed those weeks of the hoodie was I
- 13:18Speaker 3: and so many people when you in it would go
- 13:21Speaker 3: and I remember being you know, like I said, it's
- 13:23Speaker 3: started in LA.
- 13:24Speaker 2: And you did, and you did.
- 13:26Speaker 3: But I remember being in. I remember, you know, a
- 13:28Speaker 3: couple of times Bloodsos was the only one in. I
- 13:30Speaker 3: remember one time we was the one my first year
- 13:33Speaker 3: we wanted and Crench Shaw High won it. And then
- 13:35Speaker 3: after that it got so big. It was people don't
- 13:38Speaker 3: know how.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Hard it is to four man. You know.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it was like you know, because you're absolutely right,
- 13:45Speaker 1: because two thousand and seven, two thousand and eight, that's
- 13:47Speaker 1: when the you know, it became really national because we
- 13:50Speaker 1: started our syndicating to all these walket with New York, Chicago, Philadelphia,
- 13:57Speaker 1: you know, Charlotte, Miami, all these different market Dallas and
- 14:01Speaker 1: so it wasn't just LA anymore. That's why I steer
- 14:04Speaker 1: trip that you guys were able to win before it
- 14:07Speaker 1: really exploded. And when it really exploded, it was like, Wow,
- 14:10Speaker 1: this is something that was just just a cool idea
- 14:13Speaker 1: that's become worldwide. But that but that kind of like
- 14:16Speaker 1: prepared you for what you're doing now as a as
- 14:19Speaker 1: A as they said, international brand.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Talk about the stuff.
- 14:23Speaker 1: We talked about, the hoodies, we talked about coming out
- 14:26Speaker 1: of Compton. You know, open up your shop. You got
- 14:28Speaker 1: this beautiful restaurant. I'm gonna just tell you about the food. Okay,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and uh blod so bar and Q bar and Q
- 14:35Speaker 1: that's on Lebrea. I swear to you guys every time
- 14:38Speaker 1: I go to La You know, the COVID has kept
- 14:40Speaker 1: me out, but I would go there. And you know,
- 14:43Speaker 1: I'm telling you something'ma type of buy candy. Candy candy.
- 14:47Speaker 1: She goes by Candy Marine now because I represent her
- 14:49Speaker 1: as an actress and and uh talk to hosting producer.
- 14:52Speaker 1: She took me at the first time. She said no,
- 14:54Speaker 1: she said, Kevin said he got you on this with Sharan.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I said, you know, I don't like that. I don't
- 14:58Speaker 1: like that and said I don't like when y'all pay,
- 15:00Speaker 1: but go ahead.
- 15:02Speaker 2: And so and so. So.
- 15:03Speaker 1: You know, every time I go in there. I don't
- 15:04Speaker 1: tell nobody I'm going I've taken the air force in there.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Air force in there because I had a big contract
- 15:10Speaker 1: air Force. And then I was doing a base like
- 15:12Speaker 1: two hours away, uh in the month of March, two
- 15:17Speaker 1: hours away. And I told them, I said, I want
- 15:19Speaker 1: you to go to La and Or and get and
- 15:22Speaker 1: pick up this barbecue.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Run.
- 15:24Speaker 1: They said, rashan really, I said yes, bloodsoe on le Brell.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I said them, Colin Greens gonna kill you. They're gonna
- 15:31Speaker 1: mess you up. Now, I said, Collin Greens gonna messh
- 15:33Speaker 1: you up. And they said, well, I they two hours down,
- 15:36Speaker 1: two hours back.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Was nobody disappointed? They went, wow, I see why you went.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Appreciate That's how powerful I believe in your brand.
- 15:45Speaker 2: That's how good your brain is.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Tell everybody about the menu that you have, the type
- 15:49Speaker 1: of food that you serve on your menu, Kevin.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Oh, like I always say, Mabe, we do it right,
- 15:54Speaker 3: low and slow like a six boat. You know what
- 15:56Speaker 3: I'm saying. Right, take that time. The brisket is fifteen hours,
- 16:00Speaker 3: the ribs it's four to five hours. You know, we
- 16:02Speaker 3: we you know, I'm a firm believer. It's it ain't broke,
- 16:04Speaker 3: don't don't fix it. You know, I still do it
- 16:06Speaker 3: the way Willie may feel. You do it. When I
- 16:08Speaker 3: would come in U spend my summers in Corsicanada, you know,
- 16:12Speaker 3: she would take her time and do it right, you know.
- 16:14Speaker 3: And I just try to. I just try to keep
- 16:17Speaker 3: that going at every spot that we got, you know,
- 16:20Speaker 3: and and like I say, just knowing incredible people like
- 16:23Speaker 3: you and and and and it's so funny you bring
- 16:25Speaker 3: up because I had a discussion about that with a
- 16:29Speaker 3: younger guy who just opening up the spot, and he
- 16:31Speaker 3: was saying, you know, say, you know, uh, sometimes celebrities
- 16:34Speaker 3: come in and uh this and that, this and that.
- 16:36Speaker 3: I said, let me just tell you one thing. I
- 16:38Speaker 3: don't care who they are, whatever whatever, you give them
- 16:42Speaker 3: that option, because celebrities are different. Some of them are
- 16:46Speaker 3: just like you who like I want to pay some
- 16:48Speaker 3: of them don't, you know, but you being you need
- 16:52Speaker 3: you need them more than they need you. And like
- 16:56Speaker 3: on any field, you got cool people and you got uh,
- 16:59Speaker 3: you know, people who's tripping or whatever whatever. But that's
- 17:02Speaker 3: on you to understand that. But a celebrity coming in
- 17:05Speaker 3: there's going to look out for your business. But you
- 17:09Speaker 3: have to respect, just like they respect your work as
- 17:12Speaker 3: a chef, and they come to your spot, you have
- 17:14Speaker 3: to respect they work like these people don't want to
- 17:16Speaker 3: deal with people sometimes, but they take the time to
- 17:18Speaker 3: come come to you and come to your spot. And
- 17:21Speaker 3: sometimes us as business owners have to really quick speaking
- 17:23Speaker 3: on people's pocketbooks and all that. And one tweet are
- 17:27Speaker 3: some of the like when you talk about free advertisements
- 17:30Speaker 3: or are some of the stuff that you do? I
- 17:32Speaker 3: can never pay for that right right?
- 17:33Speaker 1: Because I post every tidy. I posted post a couple
- 17:38Speaker 1: of last month and I hadn't even been there, and
- 17:40Speaker 1: I act.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Like I was that.
- 17:43Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more from Rashon McDonald and
- 17:46Speaker 1: money Making Conversations don't.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Touch that down.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Welcome back to the money Making Conversations Masterclass hosted by
- 17:59Speaker 4: Rashaan McDonald. Money Making Conversations Masterclass continues online at Moneymakingconversations
- 18:05Speaker 4: dot com and follow money Making Conversations Masterclass on Facebook, Twitter,
- 18:09Speaker 4: and Instagram.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's what I'm saying. But I can't And
- 18:15Speaker 3: I respect that, and I love that so much. And
- 18:18Speaker 3: I try to tell younger brothers and sisters who open up,
- 18:20Speaker 3: get that mentality. They ninety percent of the time they
- 18:24Speaker 3: gonna pay, but make sure you give them the respect
- 18:27Speaker 3: that they deserve, you know. I mean, we got all
- 18:30Speaker 3: huge celebrities coming there. Can I do the same thing
- 18:33Speaker 3: with all of them? Right, all of them? And I'm
- 18:35Speaker 3: not gonna drop no names, but I'm talking about foods.
- 18:38Speaker 3: You know. Some of the best artists we ever had,
- 18:40Speaker 3: foods from the Titanic and everything, come in that spot
- 18:43Speaker 3: and they all look out. But you better give them,
- 18:46Speaker 3: you know, take care of them, man, because these people
- 18:47Speaker 3: are gonna unique that. Who wasn't for that? And the
- 18:50Speaker 3: Hoodie Awards and getting to know that. I mean, it
- 18:53Speaker 3: was so many celebrities that come to the Hoodie Awards
- 18:56Speaker 3: that came to the restaurant. After World I got to
- 18:58Speaker 3: come see what this is about.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, and that's that's called community. But the thing
- 19:02Speaker 1: about it, let me just tell you. Let me tell
- 19:03Speaker 1: you something real talk here. Every time I've been I've
- 19:06Speaker 1: been there over a dozen times. Okay, I brought people
- 19:09Speaker 1: with me. I went in there by myself and just
- 19:11Speaker 1: got the vegetables spread because when you get the vegetable
- 19:14Speaker 1: spread in the meat, it's just too much.
- 19:15Speaker 2: And I'm always traveling and I don't. Really. I'm in
- 19:18Speaker 2: a hotel, so I can't do.
- 19:19Speaker 1: It to go okay and so so so sometimes I
- 19:22Speaker 1: come in there, give me some corn bread and then
- 19:23Speaker 1: I give me the the you know, some collar greens
- 19:26Speaker 1: and beans and so I just break it up like that.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Or sometimes it's come in and give me a sandwich
- 19:30Speaker 1: and so. But every time I go in there, the
- 19:33Speaker 1: service is always on point.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Kevin. The meal looks exactly the same of quality separation.
- 19:42Speaker 1: I mean picture, I take pictures of your food and
- 19:45Speaker 1: then people do. People go, okay, it looks like that,
- 19:48Speaker 1: I said all the time, all the time. I remember
- 19:50Speaker 1: when I brought the Air National Guard in there. You know,
- 19:53Speaker 1: we were staying way in Long Beach for for a conference.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I said, they said, it's where we're gonna eat. I said,
- 19:59Speaker 1: we going to uh blood toe Bar and Q is
- 20:03Speaker 1: in l A. He said all the way over that.
- 20:05Speaker 1: I said, yes, we're gonna go over there, went up
- 20:08Speaker 1: and there. Man, they went wow after because because the
- 20:12Speaker 1: beauty about the beautiful things about coming to this place,
- 20:14Speaker 1: like when.
- 20:15Speaker 2: You get your meal, you get that double meat, triple meat.
- 20:17Speaker 1: All the because I'm telling the guy man, people always say, man,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you small, you eat all that food.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Hey, hey, stay off my plate, Stay off my plate.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Stay we need to switch that up.
- 20:31Speaker 1: And so what happens when you have by five people
- 20:33Speaker 1: at the table okay, and all that food come to
- 20:37Speaker 1: the table. You get attention man, because it looks so
- 20:39Speaker 1: beautiful because every one of the plates is look immaculate
- 20:44Speaker 1: as far as we want to say, you word is immaculate.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Everything is nothing running off the sides, nothing too small,
- 20:50Speaker 1: The portions are good.
- 20:51Speaker 2: That's why I just love what I what I eat.
- 20:54Speaker 1: That's why when I got to sneak in, because I'm
- 20:56Speaker 1: gonna tell Kevin, you know the problem, because it's about
- 21:01Speaker 1: of respect. That's why I started the Hoodie Awards, man,
- 21:03Speaker 1: because it's about showing love.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Man.
- 21:06Speaker 1: The fact that you guys, you still believe in it
- 21:08Speaker 1: just excites me even more.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Man.
- 21:10Speaker 1: And the fact that the fact that you're doing so
- 21:13Speaker 1: well and you your TV so talk about how did
- 21:16Speaker 1: the television stuff start for you?
- 21:18Speaker 2: And how would you? How would you? Were you nervous?
- 21:20Speaker 2: Did you know?
- 21:21Speaker 1: What?
- 21:21Speaker 2: Did you? Did you play it off? How did it
- 21:23Speaker 2: all kick off for you? Kevin?
- 21:25Speaker 3: What my first one? And it's so funny, my niece,
- 21:28Speaker 3: because I'm just like, shoot, this is maybe twenty ten, Kevin.
- 21:33Speaker 3: I'm uh, I'm still knee deep in the conf location.
- 21:37Speaker 3: So uh uh, this producer call and said, hey, we
- 21:42Speaker 3: really want to get you know, Kevin bluffing. He happened
- 21:44Speaker 3: to be at the restaurant. I didn't know who he was,
- 21:46Speaker 3: you know, in the restaurant, in the kitchen, we clown
- 21:48Speaker 3: in the back, We clown and cracked jokes and bags.
- 21:51Speaker 3: So the dude heard me back there clown and so
- 21:53Speaker 3: I never even seen it, didn't know who he was.
- 21:54Speaker 3: And uh, he kept calling, and he kept always. He
- 21:58Speaker 3: got my niece itself on the meat was called and
- 22:00Speaker 3: she was like, this guy wants you for a TV show.
- 22:03Speaker 3: And I was like, what TV show? Bar Rescue? And
- 22:06Speaker 3: I never heard of it, you know, never heard of the
- 22:08Speaker 3: show and all that and that. He kept calling, and
- 22:10Speaker 3: then one day she said, look, this dude need a video. We'
- 22:12Speaker 3: finna go to your house and do this video. So
- 22:14Speaker 3: we we went to the house and started the video
- 22:16Speaker 3: of just you know, me interviewing or whatever whatever. But
- 22:19Speaker 3: before the thing was even set up, it's me cussing
- 22:22Speaker 3: her out. I'm like, She's like, who these sow and sos?
- 22:25Speaker 3: Is and this that. So when she fit it, she
- 22:27Speaker 3: sent the whole thing and John Taffer's seen it and
- 22:31Speaker 3: he taught now, I gotta have this, dude. I gotta
- 22:33Speaker 3: have them. Damn bam bam uh and I got this
- 22:36Speaker 3: a funny store. I'm gonna keep the shure up. But
- 22:38Speaker 3: from my first episode was in uh Kansas City, Uh.
- 22:42Speaker 3: I think it was called Boondocks or whatever. The show
- 22:45Speaker 3: never was supposed to air because so we saved this bar.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I'm thinking, this dude is That's when I learned to
- 22:51Speaker 3: between like old Southern races are a Southern rocker. This
- 22:55Speaker 3: dude was a Southern rock and we we actually are
- 22:57Speaker 3: good friends now and you know southern rocker. They like
- 22:59Speaker 3: wrap and country and on it. Thinking he was a racist.
- 23:03Speaker 3: But anyway, we get into it on the show. I'm like,
- 23:05Speaker 3: you know, I'm finna put hands on this food and
- 23:07Speaker 3: it's all on the show. But he didn't have no reverse.
- 23:11Speaker 3: He didn't have no reverse, so he wasn't no pump.
- 23:13Speaker 3: You know what I mean. I'm gonna I'm gonna get
- 23:16Speaker 3: you it, You're gonna get But anyway, so it's so crazy.
- 23:19Speaker 3: So it takes about a couple of months for them
- 23:21Speaker 3: to do it. So the night before the show was
- 23:23Speaker 3: supposed to air, which was Thanksgiving weekend that year, I
- 23:25Speaker 3: can't think of the exact year. He was having a
- 23:28Speaker 3: party at his bar and got a guy was smoking,
- 23:31Speaker 3: big time country singer at his bar, and they got
- 23:33Speaker 3: into it, had a fight to do, kind of got
- 23:35Speaker 3: the best of Chris. Chris shot and killed the dude. Wow,
- 23:39Speaker 3: the night before the show was supposed to end, so
- 23:41Speaker 3: they had to pull up the show. But the show
- 23:44Speaker 3: accidentally aired on the replay later on that night. And
- 23:48Speaker 3: it's a big old thing and all that, but I'm saying,
- 23:50Speaker 3: I'm getting into this food, this wool go to. He
- 23:52Speaker 3: could have went to the back and got a gun
- 23:53Speaker 3: on me, you know, but that was my first episode,
- 23:57Speaker 3: my first shot. And then John Tapper is like huge
- 24:02Speaker 3: in my life, like you guys. So I mean, this
- 24:03Speaker 3: dude is as far as business and bars and the
- 24:07Speaker 3: things that he knows. And like I said, fifteen episodes later, Man,
- 24:11Speaker 3: he keeps me busy. In fact, he called me the
- 24:14Speaker 3: other day to congratulate me because the Netflix show is
- 24:16Speaker 3: doing so good. Is number one half the last week
- 24:18Speaker 3: it was the number one unscripted show on Netflix. And
- 24:22Speaker 3: dude is doing well. Man.
- 24:24Speaker 1: First of all, that we're talking about the American Barbecue Showdown, Okay,
- 24:28Speaker 1: and they got some characters on there. And your girl
- 24:30Speaker 1: from Mississippi, she's the real dead who cooks the whole hall?
- 24:35Speaker 1: Did you know before the show or of this new offer?
- 24:38Speaker 3: I knew ever, I knew over that was our first
- 24:41Speaker 3: time meeting. And uh, she's incredible. I mean she's a legend.
- 24:45Speaker 3: She's a legend. And uh and you'd be surprised some
- 24:47Speaker 3: of those cooks to be first time. I mean they
- 24:49Speaker 3: did such a good job of getting that cast to
- 24:52Speaker 3: get you know, and.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Uh, well be a part of well, you know you,
- 24:56Speaker 1: I know you'll be back because it's part of your brain.
- 24:59Speaker 2: It's part of you, part of what you do.
- 25:01Speaker 1: That Like like you know, when I put the press
- 25:03Speaker 1: related that police out, you know, they say, I said, well,
- 25:05Speaker 1: Kevin's name first, Kevin Bludso's name first on the pressure League.
- 25:09Speaker 1: That press release was reached one hundred million people.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Wow, that Fresh Releaf picked them.
- 25:15Speaker 1: When you start talking about audience picked up by different
- 25:17Speaker 1: websites and they started putting that number together, one hundred
- 25:20Speaker 1: million people.
- 25:21Speaker 2: And that's what relationships do. Kevin.
- 25:24Speaker 1: And that's what you're talking about this whole conversation is
- 25:26Speaker 1: that you respect the process, you understand the process. Just
- 25:30Speaker 1: drop some jewels on people about the value of relationships, Kevin.
- 25:35Speaker 3: I mean, it's like I say when you when you say,
- 25:37Speaker 3: look look out, I would not be here if it
- 25:39Speaker 3: wasn't for people looking out for me. And you know
- 25:42Speaker 3: saying I always say Russia's uh, I don't give to
- 25:47Speaker 3: be blessed. I'm blessed, so I give you know, it's
- 25:50Speaker 3: not no secret recipe that this, you know, it has
- 25:53Speaker 3: to come from your heart. Like I try to tell people,
- 25:55Speaker 3: love to talk about all the funerals and stuff we
- 25:58Speaker 3: paid for, you know, with blood cells. Okay, let's also
- 26:04Speaker 3: talk about the scholarships and how many kids we put
- 26:06Speaker 3: through college too. It's more of the good things that
- 26:10Speaker 3: out weigh the bad things. And God had put me
- 26:12Speaker 3: in position to help like that. And that's what I'm saying.
- 26:15Speaker 3: And it it, it comes, and that's what it's like.
- 26:18Speaker 3: It's so weird, it's just and I try to tell
- 26:21Speaker 3: people it has to come from your heart, and it's natural.
- 26:24Speaker 3: The blessing is gonna keep bringing in if you do
- 26:26Speaker 3: what you're supposed to do. And how was you raised?
- 26:28Speaker 3: You was raised to give you know, messing us as
- 26:31Speaker 3: black folks. I mean, you know, coming up, what we had,
- 26:33Speaker 3: all we had was food and and love and hugs
- 26:36Speaker 3: and all that, and like we gotta we gotta go
- 26:38Speaker 3: back to that, man, We got to go back to that.
- 26:41Speaker 3: And you gotta want to put the work in. It's
- 26:43Speaker 3: hard work. Like people want to get a business. I know,
- 26:45Speaker 3: you know, a business is gonna be the hardest job
- 26:47Speaker 3: you ever had in your life, right right, And if
- 26:50Speaker 3: you don't have admitting that's why everybody can't do it.
- 26:52Speaker 3: A business is gonna be the hardest job in your life.
- 26:55Speaker 3: I mean, I said that, dude, telling I want to
- 26:57Speaker 3: be like you. I want to you know, be able
- 26:58Speaker 3: to live in Texas and this and this and that.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I said, Okay, well you ready to go eight years
- 27:02Speaker 3: without off day? You know what I mean?
- 27:07Speaker 1: You know I'm gonna I'm gonna post that on a
- 27:10Speaker 1: motivational card, Kevin, I'm gonna put that on my work.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Are you ready to give eight years without an off day?
- 27:16Speaker 3: Well? Yeah, open up. Let me tell you. When I
- 27:19Speaker 3: first opened up Blood Shucks, I was still djaying so
- 27:23Speaker 3: I would have a I would. I would get to
- 27:24Speaker 3: blood Thoes at four o'clock on a Saturday morning and
- 27:29Speaker 3: uh be there until seven o'clock. Go home at night,
- 27:34Speaker 3: go home, take a shower, pack my gig up, and
- 27:37Speaker 3: go do a DJ gig. Get back about two three
- 27:40Speaker 3: in the morning, take a shower, and go up to
- 27:44Speaker 3: blood Thoes to take briskets off and get ready for
- 27:46Speaker 3: the day. Twenty four hours straight. And that went on
- 27:49Speaker 3: for the first almost year and a half of my
- 27:51Speaker 3: business because I was at one time I was just
- 27:53Speaker 3: DJing and catering, so I was booked, you know, But
- 27:58Speaker 3: I had to do what I had to do. I mean,
- 27:59Speaker 3: my daughter wrote one of the cut wish I had it.
- 28:01Speaker 3: She said, my daddy, if you knew the work my daddy,
- 28:03Speaker 3: it was called my Daddy's not overnight success. My daddy
- 28:06Speaker 3: would come in at three four in the morning. I
- 28:07Speaker 3: would just hope my father got at least one hour
- 28:09Speaker 3: of sleep, and I know he didn't. My Daddy's not
- 28:12Speaker 3: an overnight success. And they got to know everybody's path
- 28:15Speaker 3: is not gonna be that way, you know. But it's tough,
- 28:17Speaker 3: especially when you and I would and I know you know,
- 28:19Speaker 3: when you know money making conversations. I would tell anybody
- 28:23Speaker 3: if you can, please have the money and the back
- 28:26Speaker 3: end to start because when you start on a shoe
- 28:28Speaker 3: string budget, that's why a lot of them don't make it,
- 28:31Speaker 3: because you need that. And us as a community, that's
- 28:33Speaker 3: why we need our own banks and we need because
- 28:35Speaker 3: we can't these younger they can't get the loans. You know.
- 28:38Speaker 3: They want you to be experienced to get a small
- 28:41Speaker 3: businessman loan, but you you need the small businessman loan
- 28:43Speaker 3: to get going, you know, right, They and they and
- 28:47Speaker 3: they have to understand that. Then as you grow, get
- 28:49Speaker 3: get you know, get with a good team. I have
- 28:51Speaker 3: a good team behind me. There's no way I could
- 28:54Speaker 3: do what I'm doing if I didn't have the team
- 28:57Speaker 3: that I have working, you know with with you know,
- 29:01Speaker 3: the Bloodsholls LLC. The people that we have, the things
- 29:03Speaker 3: that have been done, the doors that have opened to
- 29:06Speaker 3: get to you straight, to get on the braid, to
- 29:08Speaker 3: get in those conversations that we need to be in
- 29:12Speaker 3: so we can have a voice, you know. And that's
- 29:14Speaker 3: the whole thing. You have to have a good team, man,
- 29:16Speaker 3: and you got to trust the team. You might be
- 29:18Speaker 3: the quarterback, but you need.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Some goods, linemen, running backs, coaches, you know, on the sidelines,
- 29:25Speaker 1: cheer in your own cheerleaders, all that stuff, man.
- 29:28Speaker 2: And more importantly, you need fans in the stands. That's
- 29:31Speaker 2: called customers, right people.
- 29:34Speaker 3: And how you keep them by putting out a good product.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Absolutely, Kevin, I just want to thank you, man, And look,
- 29:40Speaker 1: we don't hang out on come and wrap up the show.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I want to get the number and so we can
- 29:43Speaker 1: stay in touch. But I just love you, man, I
- 29:47Speaker 1: just love you, man.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Man, I got so much love and respect for you. Bro.
- 29:50Speaker 3: It's like it's it's unwavering man, real.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Talk, you know, because of the fact that I know
- 29:56Speaker 1: where you came from. I know, I know, and I
- 29:58Speaker 1: know that what I've been doing all my life. But
- 30:01Speaker 1: tell people, I've been doing this since all eighteen years old.
- 30:03Speaker 1: For some reason, God just just said this is what
- 30:05Speaker 1: you do. You uplift people. You don't when somebody's behind you,
- 30:09Speaker 1: you don't run off and leave them. You extend on
- 30:11Speaker 1: right hand. And that's what the Neighborhood Awards is. That's
- 30:14Speaker 1: what the Hoodie Awards was. And to see you have
- 30:17Speaker 1: such a reaction in it, and there's a lot of
- 30:18Speaker 1: people like that, man, I'll be in DC. People to
- 30:21Speaker 1: come on that you ain't gonna bring it back. Come
- 30:23Speaker 1: on that shop, shut shut. I'm talking about barbershops, be just.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I'm talking about high school churches Detroit and lamb all
- 30:32Speaker 1: over this country. Stop me go shout for real, man,
- 30:34Speaker 1: for real. I said, look, well we're thinking about it. Man,
- 30:38Speaker 1: I got something else. They're gonna jump off, but we'll
- 30:41Speaker 1: talk about a brother because I understand exactly what's going off,
- 30:45Speaker 1: what's going on in life, and I know it's need,
- 30:47Speaker 1: especially during these time and black unrest.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Because we got to go out there and vote.
- 30:51Speaker 1: We got to register to vote, and I'm voting in person,
- 30:55Speaker 1: my friend, I am voting in the pace. I'm not
- 30:58Speaker 1: messing around with no mail in ballot. I'm not messing
- 31:00Speaker 1: around with that. And I want somebody to go, here's
- 31:01Speaker 1: your card, Sure you've officially voted, because I want to
- 31:04Speaker 1: people understand that that if you want something in life,
- 31:06Speaker 1: no matter what it is, a business, you want to graduate,
- 31:09Speaker 1: you want to be in a relationship for a long term.
- 31:11Speaker 1: It's hard work. It's hard work, and voting is hard.
- 31:14Speaker 1: If you got stand in that line, if it's raining,
- 31:17Speaker 1: if it's storming, standing that line, because if that don't
- 31:20Speaker 1: make a change, it's going to be a four more
- 31:23Speaker 1: years of a life that would never be good, especially
- 31:26Speaker 1: for people who aren't making it. And I'm going to
- 31:28Speaker 1: just talk about you know, we've crossed a little line there, Kevin.
- 31:31Speaker 2: We can survive the ignorance. I'm not there.
- 31:33Speaker 1: But see again, if I'm making it and my people
- 31:36Speaker 1: ain't making it, then I'm not making it.
- 31:38Speaker 3: That's right. You ain't making it because that's a burden,
- 31:40Speaker 3: you know. And I always say too, and I know
- 31:42Speaker 3: we rapping, But it wasn't that long ago when we
- 31:46Speaker 3: talk about standing in lines. I' me and my son
- 31:48Speaker 3: was at play football at Utah. He called me one
- 31:52Speaker 3: day and he was just upset and he was like Dad,
- 31:54Speaker 3: he was one to sixty five. I said, yeah, Mark.
- 31:56Speaker 3: He said the Voters Act was made Junal whatever. Since
- 32:00Speaker 3: I said yeah, whatever it was. He said, so when
- 32:03Speaker 3: you was born, black people couldn't vote. I said no.
- 32:05Speaker 3: So he said, my granting them couldn't vote. I said no,
- 32:08Speaker 3: and it hit home with them, like he knows people.
- 32:12Speaker 3: He couldn't believe that he knew black people that couldn't
- 32:14Speaker 3: vote at the time, right, And if people don't think
- 32:17Speaker 3: certain things can happen again. Like I tell people all
- 32:19Speaker 3: the time, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, theory of ferist
- 32:23Speaker 3: or whatever I said. But when they came to and
- 32:25Speaker 3: got them brothers from Africa for slavery, I said, they
- 32:28Speaker 3: were living normal lives.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Yes, they were normal life.
- 32:31Speaker 3: I said, Please look at the big picture on everything.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Please look at people trying to line up with Russia
- 32:39Speaker 3: and things like that. Just always look at the big picture, man,
- 32:42Speaker 3: and get out there and vote. Man, it's this I
- 32:44Speaker 3: never thought we would be to this time again, and
- 32:47Speaker 3: we are. And if this don't bring us all together,
- 32:50Speaker 3: and like I said, you can't say certain things aren't different,
- 32:52Speaker 3: because I mean, I was in LA for the ninety
- 32:55Speaker 3: two rides, you know what I mean. You know brothers
- 32:57Speaker 3: and Hispanics out there. But now who's out there now?
- 33:01Speaker 3: It's white, black Hispanic together. And like I said, maybe
- 33:05Speaker 3: not in all lifetime, but I feel like once you
- 33:07Speaker 3: have kids, ain't novice about maybe in the lifetime and
- 33:10Speaker 3: a lifetime after that, racism might not exist no more,
- 33:13Speaker 3: you know what I mean. And that's what I try
- 33:15Speaker 3: to work forwards. Man.
- 33:16Speaker 1: But we got to do it, you know, Yes, Kevin,
- 33:19Speaker 1: I want to appreciate you coming on money Making Conversations
