- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word. Together
- 0:43throughout the book of John, Jesus makes 7 identifying
- 0:46statements, statements declaring who He is that all begin with.
- 0:50I am language that should call our minds back to the Old
- 0:54Testament when God identifies Himself to Moses as I am who I
- 0:58am. These seven statements include I
- 1:01am the bread of life from John 6.
- 1:04I am the light of the world from John eight.
- 1:07I am the resurrection in the life from John 11.
- 1:10I am the way and the truth in the life from John 14 and from
- 1:14John chapter 15. I am the true vine.
- 1:17Here in John chapter 10 we get the remaining two I am
- 1:20statements from Jesus. In particular in verse seven I
- 1:24am the door and in verse 11 I am the Good Shepherd.
- 1:29Listen to a passage from this chapter to catch the whole
- 1:32context and let's discuss what Jesus is getting at.
- 1:35Here in John chapter 10 it reads.
- 1:38So Jesus said to them again, truly, truly, I say to you, I am
- 1:42the door of the sheep. All who came before me are
- 1:44thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.
- 1:48I am the door. If anyone enters through me, he
- 1:50will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
- 1:55The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.
- 1:58I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
- 2:01I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his
- 2:04life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a
- 2:07shepherd who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming
- 2:11and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and
- 2:14scatters them. He flees because he has a hired
- 2:17hand and is not concerned about the sheep.
- 2:20I am the Good Shepherd, and I know my own, and my own know me,
- 2:24even as the Father knows me, and I know the Father, and I lay
- 2:28down my life for the sheep. In this passage, and
- 2:32particularly in these two I am statements, Jesus is laying out
- 2:362 clear and important truths about who He is and how we must
- 2:39respond to Him. First, Jesus is the door of the
- 2:42sheep. Throughout this whole passage we
- 2:45are referred to as sheep, helpless, at risk, needy sheep.
- 2:50And there is one door to God's pasture.
- 2:52There is one door by which we may enter into the care and
- 2:55protection of God. And that door is Jesus.
- 2:59In other words, there is one path to God.
- 3:02Jesus is the only way. There is no other.
- 3:04If we would find refuge and help and rest in peace and provision
- 3:08in the presence of God, we must be brought there through Christ.
- 3:13But this passage doesn't stop there.
- 3:15Jesus is not only the door for the sheep.
- 3:18Jesus tells us that he's the Good Shepherd.
- 3:20He is the caretaker of God's flock.
- 3:22He is the one nourishing, caring for, providing for the people of
- 3:26God. And how is it that Jesus
- 3:28embodies his role as our Good Shepherd?
- 3:31Look again at verse 11. I am the Good Shepherd.
- 3:34The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
- 3:38It is through Jesus laying down his life that we are cared for.
- 3:41He is our Saviour. It's through his death, through
- 3:44his sacrifice on the cross that we are brought near to God.
- 3:48It's through His blood that we are made clean, made whole,
- 3:51forgiven and set free by God. And that life giving Saviour
- 3:55does not stop there. His care for us did not end at
- 3:58his death. No, even now He is our Good
- 4:01Shepherd. He even now is taking care of
- 4:04His sheep. He knows us and we know Him.
- 4:07He is not just our Saviour, He is our advocate.
- 4:10He is our friend. Hebrews 725 says, Therefore He
- 4:14is able to save forever those who draw near to God through
- 4:18Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
- 4:22So come to the door, come to the Good Shepherd.
- 4:25Without Him we are lost, we are hopeless.
- 4:29Come to Him and receive the salvation and love and tender
- 4:33care that He is able to provide for you and for me.
