- 0:00Speaker 1: Above and beyond their athletics scholarships. Coaching and mentoring is
- 0:04Speaker 1: in his DNA, and he is concurrently served as Rich
- 0:09Speaker 1: Advisor and head Men and Women Tennis coach at Tuskegee University.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Please work with the money making Conversations Masterclass, Gregory Green,
- 0:18Speaker 1: how you don Gregory Hey?
- 0:20Speaker 2: How you doing, Sir Donald? Pretty good?
- 0:23Speaker 1: My friend Tuskegee. How did you get How do you
- 0:26Speaker 1: wind up in Tuskege? And I saying that's a bad thing,
- 0:28Speaker 1: but there's always a journey. I mean you not only
- 0:30Speaker 1: have done other things coach outside of the world of tennis.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Give us a little of your background before we really
- 0:36Speaker 1: get into the interview.
- 0:38Speaker 2: H Well, I started, I'm from Cleveland, Ohio. I started
- 0:42Speaker 2: playing football in Texas at Sam Houston with Texas and
- 0:47Speaker 2: basically coach college football at different places Tuskegee, Alabama State,
- 0:52Speaker 2: Kentucky State, and also was coaching the Savannah State and
- 0:57Speaker 2: coached at tennis at both of those places too. And
- 1:00Speaker 2: now I'm back at Tuskegee coaching tennis and was the
- 1:03Speaker 2: director of academics at the University of Alabama and Birmingham.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Awesome. Awesome. Now you know we were off the offline.
- 1:09Speaker 1: We talked a little bit. I always talk about guests
- 1:11Speaker 1: prior to it, and I called him up and he
- 1:14Speaker 1: had a Houston number. So you've been in that Houston
- 1:17Speaker 1: community and that's where I was born and raised. Now
- 1:19Speaker 1: talk us about your experience in Houston.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Oh, Houston is a beautiful place. I call it four
- 1:26Speaker 2: line of stuff right in Houston. That's right, Houston's beautiful.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I was at Texas Southern and uh, that hospitality down
- 1:33Speaker 2: there was great. I also went to the school down there,
- 1:35Speaker 2: Sam Houston, which.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Is right down the road. That's Huntsville, Alabama. That's where
- 1:39Speaker 1: the prison at the prison down there.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Yes, yes, sir, sir.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Uh, let's just talk about this n I L because
- 1:47Speaker 1: I wanted to let people understand your background before we
- 1:50Speaker 1: got into it. Because we mentioned in tennants and people
- 1:52Speaker 1: go n AL and tendants the all year about the
- 1:54Speaker 1: NIL associated with football and NL searching with basketball. But
- 1:58Speaker 1: it crosses all that athletic fields that are being made
- 2:01Speaker 1: available to sports. But we've always heard about the you know,
- 2:06Speaker 1: the black athlete you know being you know, being used,
- 2:11Speaker 1: you know, being kicked to the curve, you know, by
- 2:13Speaker 1: these institutions, and they're not benefiting not n AL has
- 2:17Speaker 1: popped up. Now, what difference is that making for the athlete? Now, Gregory, Well.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Let's giving them a great opportunity to market themselves and
- 2:28Speaker 2: make money. Uh. But but like anything else, you got
- 2:31Speaker 2: to have the talent first. It's not it's not just
- 2:34Speaker 2: gonna You're not just gonna get money because you're on
- 2:36Speaker 2: a team, unless unless, unless you get on some teams
- 2:40Speaker 2: like uh some power Fire programs. Everybody on a team
- 2:43Speaker 2: get a certain amount of money, uh through different programs
- 2:46Speaker 2: with different companies. And it's a lot more of you
- 2:49Speaker 2: selling yourself than the university selling you. And you got
- 2:53Speaker 2: to get out there and uh be marketable. You got
- 2:56Speaker 2: to get out there and had opportunity to uh put
- 2:59Speaker 2: your off on a on a national stage and and
- 3:02Speaker 2: just had a talent to go along with it.
- 3:04Speaker 1: You got to have a talent, right because you know,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I was reading the day about Shaduah Sanders, Uh Leon Sanders.
- 3:10Speaker 1: So he bought one of his offensive linement a two
- 3:12Speaker 1: hundred thousand dollars.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Mayby call oh he can he can do that. He
- 3:18Speaker 2: getting like six to eight million dollars a year. He
- 3:20Speaker 2: can do that. Now he can buy you and I
- 3:23Speaker 2: one of those. And that's one of the great success
- 3:28Speaker 2: stories of this opportunity because it's been many years that
- 3:32Speaker 2: we put a lot of money in a lot of
- 3:34Speaker 2: these universities, right as athletes, and they didn't get anything. Well,
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'm gonna say he didn't get anything back because like
- 3:41Speaker 2: I always tell him, uh, don't, don't don't. You don't
- 3:44Speaker 2: be used used process and that's getting that degree, and
- 3:47Speaker 2: that's the most important thing. But nowadays they getting this
- 3:49Speaker 2: opportunity to get some changed in their pocket.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And that's great too, right because I know that, Uh,
- 3:55Speaker 1: because the college scholarship. Now, just educate me a little bit. Now,
- 3:59Speaker 1: when you you on an HBC level, then you said
- 4:02Speaker 1: the word power five and then I hear the word FB,
- 4:05Speaker 1: as I hear the word division one, division two, explain
- 4:08Speaker 1: to me where HBCUs are at. And then a school
- 4:12Speaker 1: like say Ohio State in that relationship.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Okay, let's start with the big money. Let's start with
- 4:19Speaker 2: Ohio State. Ohio State alumni and they got different companies.
- 4:23Speaker 2: That's a part of the alumni programs and so they
- 4:26Speaker 2: able to get more money. That's how a lot of
- 4:28Speaker 2: this money comes from. It comes from companies and corporations
- 4:32Speaker 2: that want to donate back to their old school, and
- 4:34Speaker 2: one way to do it is through this new NLI
- 4:36Speaker 2: way instead of like they did back in the day
- 4:39Speaker 2: when I was in school, they just give you an
- 4:41Speaker 2: envelope and you got a little money that way. Now
- 4:43Speaker 2: it's tax reductible getting a large amount of money. Right,
- 4:47Speaker 2: you're getting a large amount of You get a large
- 4:49Speaker 2: amount of money. Majority of that money from those Power
- 4:52Speaker 2: five teams like Ohio State. It's some companies that cover
- 4:56Speaker 2: the whole team, regardless what position they play. They just
- 4:59Speaker 2: give everybody, Okay, every buy this team's gonna get at
- 5:01Speaker 2: least three thousand, at least three thousand dollars. That's per year,
- 5:05Speaker 2: per semester, per month. Who knows how it goes the people.
- 5:08Speaker 2: And then there's that still special athletes that's getting that
- 5:12Speaker 2: special money from special companies and corporations where they're getting
- 5:15Speaker 2: in the millions. Like we're just talking about Sanders making
- 5:19Speaker 2: almost sick things you make, I think it's six or
- 5:21Speaker 2: eight million dollars. He's the highest paid in l I
- 5:24Speaker 2: got right now. Now, when it comes to Division one,
- 5:28Speaker 2: Division two HBCUs, there is a few schools that's that's
- 5:31Speaker 2: doing pretty good. They're players here is getting a couple
- 5:34Speaker 2: of thousand dollars here and there, and and that that
- 5:37Speaker 2: goes a long way some schools, even like you ain't
- 5:40Speaker 2: being other schools. You you can probably get close to
- 5:42Speaker 2: five five to six thousand dollars a semester along with
- 5:46Speaker 2: other things that's going on. So it puts some money
- 5:49Speaker 2: in the pocket. Uh, it is put some money in
- 5:52Speaker 2: your pocket. And it's always people think that it's the
- 5:56Speaker 2: deal that you make. It's not the deal that the
- 5:58Speaker 2: school always going to have for you. Right. Say for instance,
- 6:02Speaker 2: if I'm met let's say Tuskegee, right, and I got
- 6:05Speaker 2: alumni that works for Procter and Gamo, and he wants
- 6:09Speaker 2: to do a big thing. Hey, I want to who
- 6:12Speaker 2: who can we use to advertise our business along with
- 6:18Speaker 2: support in the pocket. So they may come to us
- 6:20Speaker 2: and say, okay, I said, hey, I got this guy.
- 6:23Speaker 2: It's the guy that we probably need to promote. And
- 6:25Speaker 2: that money can vary from It's not in the millions,
- 6:28Speaker 2: but you can get some good money to take care
- 6:31Speaker 2: of travel back home. It's better than what we used
- 6:34Speaker 2: to get.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Well, you know it's always say gregor you know it's
- 6:36Speaker 1: you know apples are does it really is?
- 6:38Speaker 2: You know?
- 6:39Speaker 1: You know, like like we started with Power five, this
- 6:42Speaker 1: is money making Conversations master class. We're about to talk
- 6:44Speaker 1: about some money.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Now.
- 6:45Speaker 1: The Ohio State they're collective, that's what they call these
- 6:48Speaker 1: little collectives. Nil. They put thegether a collective of twenty
- 6:53Speaker 1: million dollars for their football team of this year. And
- 6:57Speaker 1: they went out there and they bought everybody bought. They
- 7:00Speaker 1: bought Klib from Alabama. They bought the running back from Mississippi.
- 7:05Speaker 1: They bought the quarterback Will Howard from k State. They
- 7:08Speaker 1: bought players all up and guess what they still lost
- 7:11Speaker 1: to Michigan. Okay, and so and so people, and they're collective.
- 7:15Speaker 1: They mad and Ryan Daye see they when they give
- 7:19Speaker 1: out the money, they expect the results. Then you have
- 7:23Speaker 1: quarterbacks in high school who never played a college down,
- 7:26Speaker 1: like this young man named Underwood. He was supposed to
- 7:29Speaker 1: go to LSU, supposed to go to LSU. Now last minute,
- 7:33Speaker 1: he's now going to Michigan. Where it is Michigan is
- 7:37Speaker 1: going to pay him eight million dollars.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Absolutely, eight to ten million dollars.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I've been corrected through the glass. Eight to ten million dollars.
- 7:45Speaker 1: He's not even throwing a college pass. That is the
- 7:49Speaker 1: difference that is happening right in front of our eyes.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And so if you're not offering these kids money, and
- 7:57Speaker 1: some of the coaches are frustrated by that now, but
- 8:00Speaker 1: guess what, so what you used to just because am
- 8:04Speaker 1: I like you can correctly if I'm wrong in this gregory,
- 8:07Speaker 1: It's like there's no such thing as a full scholarship.
- 8:10Speaker 1: A kid scholarship can be taken every year away from
- 8:13Speaker 1: them athletic wise.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Correct, absolutely absolutely, and the coach can leave at any time.
- 8:21Speaker 2: So I gotta I gotta fun a college football. So
- 8:25Speaker 2: he's playing college ball. So I understand that whole process
- 8:29Speaker 2: inside out, and I played myself. It's a lot of
- 8:33Speaker 2: catch twenty two's everything. The first part you mentioned about,
- 8:36Speaker 2: let's let's it's an investment for that company. Right, that
- 8:39Speaker 2: company is Ohio State. Let's let's start that that's company.
- 8:43Speaker 2: That's the investment now. And just like you do when
- 8:46Speaker 2: you was talking about stocks and everything else, sometimes the
- 8:48Speaker 2: investment don't come through for you, right that that investment
- 8:51Speaker 2: don't go down. Now, what do you do? Is the
- 8:54Speaker 2: contract already out there that that kid guaranteed this money
- 8:57Speaker 2: or is it just there guarantee for this year or
- 9:00Speaker 2: how does that work? That's the thing that's also that
- 9:03Speaker 2: people got to be thinking. The money may start a
- 9:05Speaker 2: certain way, but it may not end up that way.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Right right now. And that happens a lot. Yeah, that
- 9:13Speaker 1: happens a lot out there because the whole, the whole
- 9:16Speaker 1: money situation is getting so convoluted because you have the collective.
- 9:20Speaker 1: It is the collective working for the school. Uh, you know,
- 9:24Speaker 1: in all these different situations. But it's a lot of
- 9:26Speaker 1: money out there that's changing kids mind. I think they
- 9:30Speaker 1: said the going rate because everybody gets intoto a transfer port.
- 9:34Speaker 1: I just want to educate people about how when you
- 9:38Speaker 1: graduate from these colleges, you graduate from these schools. How
- 9:42Speaker 1: now these athletes they're really professionals who are being paid now,
- 9:46Speaker 1: which is a great thing, by the way, it's a
- 9:48Speaker 1: great thing because you used to be they will They
- 9:51Speaker 1: couldn't even sell T shirts if they if they sold
- 9:55Speaker 1: they autograph, they got suspended, They lost their academic collegship, scholarships,
- 10:02Speaker 1: lost their scholarship just for signing off autographs. This is
- 10:05Speaker 1: just this less than ten years ago, y'all. And so
- 10:08Speaker 1: Now that lets you know how much money that the
- 10:11Speaker 1: school was getting on top of these students. If a
- 10:15Speaker 1: high school quarterback, come on that Gregory high school quarterback
- 10:19Speaker 1: is being paid ten million dollars to go to the
- 10:24Speaker 1: University of Michigan. And like you said, everybody on the
- 10:27Speaker 1: university's Uni Michigan team is getting a check yep. And
- 10:33Speaker 1: some of them are getting like they have like set rates,
- 10:35Speaker 1: like every offensive lineman will get a minimum of fifty
- 10:39Speaker 1: thousand dollars.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yep. This is just fact, absolutely, just fact, absolutely absolute, absolutely.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And so now your son when he's playing college football, Now,
- 10:51Speaker 1: how does he look at the whole nil from his perspective.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm not saying, I'm not trying to get into your business,
- 10:57Speaker 1: but he's in the game. How the athletes is it's
- 11:00Speaker 1: a different business for him that he's walking into versus
- 11:03Speaker 1: would you experience as a college football player.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely Fosness to McDonald, it's it's a it's a
- 11:11Speaker 2: different because he you know, he's young. He's looking at
- 11:14Speaker 2: how many Tennis was thinking about, So he's looking at
- 11:16Speaker 2: who's giving them the most money, not not not not
- 11:19Speaker 2: the scheme of what can help him develop him and
- 11:22Speaker 2: make him a better player, not the academic but the
- 11:25Speaker 2: academy surrounding that he's going to be in. He's looking
- 11:28Speaker 2: at what can he get right now? Who's gonna give
- 11:30Speaker 2: me the most money right now? And it changed the game.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And you got coaches that's really in the crackmire because
- 11:38Speaker 2: this kid's making more than me. Hey. And then you've
- 11:43Speaker 2: got like the Toroado, you got something much more than
- 11:47Speaker 2: the presidents at the university. So how do you control
- 11:52Speaker 2: a young kid that frontal lobe had not even been
- 11:54Speaker 2: developed yet to keep the main thing the main thing? So,
- 11:59Speaker 2: but the money is there, The money is there. Is
- 12:01Speaker 2: just it's gonna be the skill set. And uh, but
- 12:04Speaker 2: a lot of kids don't look at they look at
- 12:05Speaker 2: they look right at that money and what they can
- 12:08Speaker 2: do for them.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Well, in some ways, I'm gonna tell you something, Gregory,
- 12:11Speaker 1: and thank you for calling and being on my show,
- 12:13Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation master Class. I'm talking to Gregor Green.
- 12:16Speaker 1: He's the head coach at tennis coach at Tuskegee University,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and his background has been he played college football, has
- 12:24Speaker 1: coached college football, and is well versed into collegiate athletics.
- 12:30Speaker 1: And we're talking about nil and how NIL is now
- 12:33Speaker 1: uh changed the game in a good way. And and
- 12:36Speaker 1: and every school that's participating has to have some type
- 12:40Speaker 1: of NIL collective in order to entice players to come
- 12:45Speaker 1: to the school. It's no longer now like you said,
- 12:48Speaker 1: your son, he's more he's not worried about the scheme.
- 12:50Speaker 1: He's worried about, Hey, how what I'm gonna get? What
- 12:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna get? And that's what Nick Saban, one of
- 12:55Speaker 1: the greatest college football coaches of all times, say he
- 12:58Speaker 1: couldn't take it no more. He couldn't take it them all,
- 13:01Speaker 1: you know, he over there trying to. She just came in.
- 13:03Speaker 1: The parents over there worried about what they sung gonna get,
- 13:06Speaker 1: you know, as far as a salary and to trust
- 13:10Speaker 1: is laws. But I don't know if I'm kind of
- 13:12Speaker 1: called in the middle of that, Greg And you can
- 13:14Speaker 1: help me out here, sir.
- 13:16Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:18Speaker 1: You've had athletes that you could take this scholarship away.
- 13:21Speaker 1: So if you if you recruited them, that doesn't mean
- 13:24Speaker 1: that that scholarship could be there for four years. They
- 13:27Speaker 1: can recruit over recruit a class and they tell you,
- 13:30Speaker 1: invite you an office, say hey, you might want to
- 13:32Speaker 1: transfer because we don't have room for you anymore. That
- 13:35Speaker 1: can easily happen.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Man, please don't go anywhere. We'll be right back with
- 13:39Speaker 3: more Money Making Conversations Masterclass. Welcome back to the Money
- 13:49Speaker 3: Making Conversations Masterclass hosted by Rashaan McDonald. Money Making Conversations
- 13:54Speaker 3: Masterclass continues online at Moneymakingconversations dot com and follow Money
- 14:00Speaker 3: Conversations Masterclass on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
- 14:05Speaker 2: That's an easily help yep. Absolutely, it happens every day.
- 14:08Speaker 1: And now you have the transfer portal, and the transfer
- 14:11Speaker 1: portal allows these students and a lot of them make
- 14:13Speaker 1: mistakes because some of them should not be transferring. And
- 14:16Speaker 1: let's talk about they explain to everybody what the transfer
- 14:19Speaker 1: a portal is, Gregory.
- 14:21Speaker 2: The transfer a portal, it's a it's it's a good
- 14:24Speaker 2: in the back, Uh. The good thing about it. If
- 14:26Speaker 2: a kid feels that he's or she is in a
- 14:28Speaker 2: position that she's not getting growth, she's not happy what
- 14:32Speaker 2: she is, she can put her name in the portal.
- 14:34Speaker 2: She goes to the compliance officer at the school. They
- 14:36Speaker 2: automatically get in the portal. Now every coach in the
- 14:39Speaker 2: country just looks at the portal on some coaches look
- 14:42Speaker 2: at her, look at the portal on daily basis and
- 14:44Speaker 2: see who's who's new in there, and they see you
- 14:46Speaker 2: in there. Now you're able to make contacts and that
- 14:50Speaker 2: student can transfer. No sitting out a whole year, you
- 14:53Speaker 2: can transfer immediately. So I mean, as soon as that
- 14:55Speaker 2: semester is over, you'll be able to transfer into that
- 14:58Speaker 2: that next university. Which is a thing. Uh, the challenging
- 15:02Speaker 2: things is, all right, what are we teaching our kids?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Are we teaching when things get a little tough that
- 15:09Speaker 2: we're just gonna quit and go somewhere else? And who's
- 15:11Speaker 2: to say that where you're going it's gonna be better.
- 15:13Speaker 2: So it's a lot of And then when you get
- 15:16Speaker 2: out there in the portal, if you're leaving my school
- 15:18Speaker 2: to get out of the portal any other school, I'm
- 15:20Speaker 2: gonna have to go recruit somebody else. So I'm gonna
- 15:23Speaker 2: take the I'm ready to remove the scholarship for next
- 15:26Speaker 2: semester to give to somebody else. What to say that
- 15:29Speaker 2: you don't get nobody to pull on your strings and
- 15:31Speaker 2: you don't get the opportunity to go to another school.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Now you don't put yourself out there and you ain't
- 15:35Speaker 2: got nowhere to go. So it's a lot of different
- 15:38Speaker 2: connections to that.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Well, you know, the interesting thing about it is that
- 15:41Speaker 1: and I appreciate you, and we're gonna talk about your
- 15:45Speaker 1: coaching that Tuski gets ahead tennis coach. But I just
- 15:48Speaker 1: think that when I get somebody and I have to say,
- 15:50Speaker 1: you're you know you're you're an expert in this area
- 15:54Speaker 1: and can talk about it not only from a coaching standpoint,
- 15:57Speaker 1: but you have a son right in the middle of it.
- 16:00Speaker 1: And it's and I now I'm telling everybody, it's a
- 16:02Speaker 1: great thing. It's a great thing to be able to
- 16:05Speaker 1: now be able to transfer if you're uncomfortable, if you're
- 16:08Speaker 1: not getting playing time, like you said, you know.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Absolutely used to be like you.
- 16:12Speaker 1: You compete now if you if you you second third string,
- 16:16Speaker 1: you're gonna lead. But what does that teach you when
- 16:19Speaker 1: you leave? Does that? Does that teach you that when
- 16:22Speaker 1: they go and get tough, exit stage right, or you
- 16:25Speaker 1: try to make yourself improve, go to the coach. What
- 16:28Speaker 1: do I have to do to be able to compete? Compete?
- 16:31Speaker 1: And that's what life is about. Competing. You do a
- 16:34Speaker 1: lot of mentorship. Gregory talking to us about that and
- 16:37Speaker 1: the young people and mentoring the desire to compete instead
- 16:41Speaker 1: of exiting for like they say, greener pastors.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Right, absolutely, and and it's challenging, you know. The kids
- 16:48Speaker 2: got to understand that that that life is, that's life
- 16:52Speaker 2: not is not fair, It's going to be opposite. It's
- 16:55Speaker 2: only I tell them, it's the only two things we
- 16:57Speaker 2: can control. That's all right, And it's across the board.
- 17:01Speaker 2: It's only two things in life you can really control.
- 17:04Speaker 2: That's your attitude and your effort. So regardless of what
- 17:07Speaker 2: happened to you, what is your attitude? What did your
- 17:10Speaker 2: attitude looks like when somebody tells you, okay, you're on
- 17:13Speaker 2: the second string, you're not the starting quarterback? Right now?
- 17:16Speaker 2: Does that say? Am I going do? I gotta know?
- 17:18Speaker 2: Is my attitude gonna be right? Did I'm a push
- 17:20Speaker 2: myself and challenge it? Or if I'm not gonna get
- 17:23Speaker 2: the effort that I deserve or I should put out.
- 17:26Speaker 2: So I got to challenge the kid to say, uh,
- 17:29Speaker 2: And I tell my son, I tell all of my
- 17:31Speaker 2: players and the people that I counseled, I say, you
- 17:33Speaker 2: got to find out what you want out of life. First,
- 17:36Speaker 2: you gotta understand what motivates you, what makes you feel
- 17:40Speaker 2: like I got to go get it. Whatever that thing is,
- 17:43Speaker 2: you need to have that fastered everywhere throughout your life.
- 17:47Speaker 2: When you wake up in the morning, it should be
- 17:48Speaker 2: right on your mirror. I want to be this, this
- 17:50Speaker 2: is where I'm going today and seeing it? Why you
- 17:52Speaker 2: brushing your teeth every day? Just keep pushing yourself and
- 17:55Speaker 2: understand it's got to come from intrinsic. It's got to
- 17:58Speaker 2: come from you. I can motivate you, extra to you
- 18:00Speaker 2: a little bit, but it's got to come from you. You
- 18:02Speaker 2: gotta have that want to. And sometime when you got
- 18:05Speaker 2: this opportunity and you you was to all, you was
- 18:09Speaker 2: all everything in high school and somebody says, you're not
- 18:12Speaker 2: that guy yet. Are you going to quit or are
- 18:15Speaker 2: you going to not challenge yourself or compete for the spot?
- 18:19Speaker 2: Or are you going to say, hey, I'm just gonna
- 18:21Speaker 2: throw my name in the porter and go somewhere else
- 18:23Speaker 2: and then yes and hope that I made the right decisions.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So I just try to tell the may whatever you
- 18:29Speaker 2: want to do, you can do it. You just got
- 18:31Speaker 2: to realize it takes work to get it done. It
- 18:34Speaker 2: takes great attitude and great effort to be greatness.
- 18:37Speaker 1: And they always in the word there are always consequences, consequences,
- 18:43Speaker 1: consequences and trust and sometimes you can be leaving an
- 18:47Speaker 1: area of trust going to a business. You can easily
- 18:51Speaker 1: change the word trust and family to a business, and
- 18:54Speaker 1: business will kick you to the curb even faster because
- 18:57Speaker 1: that's where you came over, because business decision. Now let's
- 19:01Speaker 1: talk about tennis, sir. You know, my daughter was fortunately
- 19:04Speaker 1: now very fortunate. My daughter played tennis as she injured
- 19:07Speaker 1: her heard her knee, and she was on the WTA circuit,
- 19:10Speaker 1: you know, and of course she was inspired by Venus
- 19:13Speaker 1: and Serena Williams. And they're no longer Venus and sul
- 19:16Speaker 1: Reena Williams out there. Tell us the state before we
- 19:19Speaker 1: get into Tuskee. Tell us your state, and you'll feel
- 19:21Speaker 1: about African Americans who are now playing professional tennis, both
- 19:25Speaker 1: on the male side and the female side.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Oh man, we got some great young talent. We got
- 19:31Speaker 2: some talent coming in tennis on then in the world,
- 19:34Speaker 2: on the world stage. That it may not be Venus
- 19:37Speaker 2: and Serena, but we got some good ones out here
- 19:39Speaker 2: on both sides of men and women. That's out here
- 19:42Speaker 2: doing some great things. Some of them are coming from
- 19:43Speaker 2: different lifestyle. We got the kid from Georgia Tech, he
- 19:48Speaker 2: went through college. Chris still made it to the pro circuit. Yeah,
- 19:52Speaker 2: it's him right for him to do it that way.
- 19:55Speaker 2: That made my life a lot better because you don't
- 19:58Speaker 2: got to go You don't have to go straight to
- 19:59Speaker 2: the pro at fifteen and sixteen and seventeen. You can
- 20:02Speaker 2: go to college, get a degree and still make it
- 20:05Speaker 2: to be one of the top ten uh uh tennis
- 20:07Speaker 2: players in the world. So that was great to see
- 20:10Speaker 2: that going on. And then there's other ones that you know,
- 20:13Speaker 2: you gotta pay a lot of money to get it done.
- 20:14Speaker 2: You gotta you gotta go through the training and everything.
- 20:16Speaker 2: But I think, uh, we got we got some. We
- 20:19Speaker 2: got some. We got some talented young tennis players coming up.
- 20:22Speaker 2: That's gonna be awesome and it's gonna represent uh, not
- 20:25Speaker 2: only our race out of our country. I think we're
- 20:28Speaker 2: gonna do well. We're doing well.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So tell us about your your tennis program up there.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Coach oh Man, I got the best athletes in the world.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Talk to me through world man Man, I got the best. Hey, Hey,
- 20:42Speaker 2: this is tu Skeiker University. The rip Ron Academic of
- 20:46Speaker 2: the South. You know, we we we got some of
- 20:48Speaker 2: the best. I got some I've been blessed with some
- 20:51Speaker 2: of the best talent. And you know what, we not
- 20:54Speaker 2: only winning championships, you know, I had my my women's
- 20:56Speaker 2: and my man's team had the highest GPA in the
- 20:59Speaker 2: confer friends, highest GPA in the region. And and winning
- 21:04Speaker 2: tennis championships, doing internships, becoming engineers, nursers, just doing great
- 21:10Speaker 2: things man, and uh, I've been blessed. I mean, I
- 21:13Speaker 2: got a great I got a great product to sell
- 21:16Speaker 2: and uh, and it's easy for me to bring in
- 21:18Speaker 2: talented players. And I got a great athletic director and
- 21:21Speaker 2: our new president. We got we got we really got
- 21:24Speaker 2: a lot of good things going on to Skeigee right
- 21:26Speaker 2: now and toward the future for tennis. Just came off
- 21:30Speaker 2: of championship with our women's team. Uh, and I guarantee
- 21:34Speaker 2: we're gonna win it again. And our men's team and
- 21:37Speaker 2: our men's team is right there ready to win it
- 21:39Speaker 2: this year coming up. Also, So I'm in I'm gonna
- 21:42Speaker 2: blessed great state. And and it's just like I said,
- 21:45Speaker 2: it's it's great to know that they're student athletes. They
- 21:48Speaker 2: are graduating man having having internships. There's sophomore years and
- 21:55Speaker 2: and choosing what job they want to take by their
- 21:57Speaker 2: junior year. It's awesome. And winning championship. It's a great thing.
- 22:00Speaker 1: That's awesome. Now, how do you recruit your talent or
- 22:03Speaker 1: does talent contact you? How does that recruiting process work
- 22:06Speaker 1: for you? Coach Green down at uh Tueskiga University, It.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Goes both ways. Most of it. I gotta hunt, I
- 22:15Speaker 2: gotta get out there. I got to The budget allowed
- 22:18Speaker 2: me to get out there and see talent. Uh. But
- 22:20Speaker 2: a lot of people uh and also do well with
- 22:24Speaker 2: people were sending me in video, send me a video
- 22:26Speaker 2: tape to see you playing, and uh, let's look at it.
- 22:28Speaker 2: And then I invite you to the campus and see
- 22:31Speaker 2: you live, introduce you to my players and see how
- 22:34Speaker 2: that thing WI will work out. And if it works out,
- 22:36Speaker 2: we we we're doing well. So it's both ways.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Wow, you know I I The great thing about this
- 22:43Speaker 1: whole world that you're in is that you're dealing with
- 22:46Speaker 1: a youth. Your your your influencer, that's what I call it.
- 22:49Speaker 1: You your influencer people leaders and things like that. And
- 22:54Speaker 1: when I talked to you, and I got an opportunity.
- 22:56Speaker 2: To interview you.
- 22:57Speaker 1: You're you at the You're at the hub right there, sir,
- 23:00Speaker 1: of our future. And if you give to give any
- 23:03Speaker 1: advice to parents who are listening, that not just attending Tuskegee,
- 23:08Speaker 1: but just it's kids in general. What you see and
- 23:11Speaker 1: what you enjoy about working with students.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Uh, I love it. This is this is my retirement job.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I think parents need to know they need to let
- 23:22Speaker 2: the kid make the decision. Let them see different opportunities,
- 23:27Speaker 2: different places they can go, but let them, let them
- 23:29Speaker 2: get a feel of the environment that they're gonna be
- 23:31Speaker 2: in for next four years, and let them make that decision.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Because the worst thing you want to do is you
- 23:36Speaker 2: make the decision for them because when it don't work,
- 23:38Speaker 2: guess who fault is, right, But when it does, but
- 23:41Speaker 2: when it don't, when it does work or what it
- 23:43Speaker 2: don't work, they can always say, hey, I made this decision.
- 23:46Speaker 2: I'm willing to work it out. So that give them,
- 23:49Speaker 2: give that student athlete that ownership and let them make
- 23:52Speaker 2: those decisions and just you know, just just throw the
- 23:55Speaker 2: odds out at them, give them the pluses and the
- 23:57Speaker 2: minus and let them do the math.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I'll tell you what Coach Green Uh annual student fall
- 24:04Speaker 1: and spring. I got to talk to you, brother, You're
