- 0:03These headlines point us back to what really matters. Ordinary
- 0:07neighbors showing extraordinary care. I'm Johan
- 0:11Heinrichs, and this is Neighbourly Headlines. Real stories of
- 0:14kindness, community and faith in action across Canada.
- 0:18Let's take a look at what's been happening close to home.
- 0:28Most days, headlines rush past us full of noise. But
- 0:31tucked inside are stories that remind us kindness is still alive
- 0:35in ordinary places. Today's headlines takes us across
- 0:39the country, from classrooms to community halls to snow
- 0:42covered sidewalks where neighbors are quietly choosing care.
- 0:46Let's get right into our stories.
- 0:52North Vancouver students lead with empathy. In North
- 0:56Vancouver, an elementary school class decided the holidays were about more than
- 1:00decorations and wish lists. The students collected and
- 1:04donated gifts for vulnerable youth through a local community services
- 1:07society, making sure young people facing difficult
- 1:11circumstances were remembered and valued. Along the
- 1:15way, they learned about empathy, civic responsibility, and
- 1:18what it means to notice who might otherwise be overlooked during the
- 1:22holidays. What I love about this story is how naturally these
- 1:25kids step into care. No fanfare, no pressure,
- 1:29no big rewards. Just a classroom deciding that kindness is
- 1:33part of the curriculum. It's a quiet reminder that compassion doesn't
- 1:37have an age requirement. Now for our next story.
- 1:41British Columbia communities choose kindness together.
- 1:45Across B.C. communities came together through seasonal campaigns
- 1:49focused on kindness, connection and practical help. With
- 1:52live music, community volunteering opportunities and simple acts of
- 1:56generosity, neighbors showed up for one another. In neighborhoods facing
- 2:00increased need. These gatherings weren't about solving everything, but
- 2:03about reminding people that they weren't alone. It's
- 2:07basically an open party and everyone's invited. Let's get to
- 2:11know one another. And there's something grounding about seeing whole
- 2:14communities lean in together, choosing presence over passivity.
- 2:18Care doesn't always change circumstances overnight, but it can
- 2:22change how heavy those circumstances feel. Now it's time for
- 2:26our Neighborhood Watch segment.
- 2:33So this is the segment where we get into stories that are a little bit
- 2:36offbeat, sometimes quirky. This one's a little
- 2:40bit more normal than usual, but I really think it fits into the category.
- 2:45In my hometown, Winnipeg, one neighbor took responsibility after
- 2:48firing up a snowblower a little too early in the morning.
- 2:52Instead of pretending it didn't happen, they left handwritten
- 2:56apology notes on nearby doors, complete with packets of
- 2:59chocolate. Now, to me, that's the definition of the
- 3:03passage in Scripture that says a kind word, turns away
- 3:06wrath. It's being proactive before things can get
- 3:10intense, even though you know you're not necessarily doing
- 3:13something that will make people happy. Now this story makes me
- 3:17smile because it shows how far humility can go. It also
- 3:21leans towards it's easier to ask for forgiveness than
- 3:24permission, but it's a good way of saying sorry and meaning it.
- 3:28If you're apologizing for snow removal with hot chocolate,
- 3:32you're probably doing winter right and now for our last story of
- 3:35the day. Newfoundland and Labrador Neighbors Feed Community and
- 3:39Connection In Newfoundland and Labrador, residents
- 3:43gather through community broadcasts, music events, turkey
- 3:47giveaways and volunteer efforts to support local food sharing
- 3:50associations. Neighbors gave time, energy and
- 3:54resources to make sure families had what they needed during the holiday season.
- 3:58It was practical, joyful and deeply rooted in community
- 4:02spirit. And it's more than just sending out a hamper,
- 4:06it's gathering people through their various gifts to support community.
- 4:10Food has a way of caring. More than nourishment, it carries
- 4:14dignity, belonging, and the message that someone thought of you.
- 4:18Now, what stands out across all these stories is how ordinary they are.
- 4:22Kids giving gifts, neighbors owning small mistakes
- 4:26even if they're on purpose. Communities showing up with whatever they
- 4:30have. None of it is flashy, but it all
- 4:33matters. These headlines remind us that
- 4:37good news is still all around us if we take the time to
- 4:40notice. Do you have a story of care happening in your
