- 0:00OK, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain Peaks,
- 0:03episode 20. And we have a wide array of
- 0:09topics today, so we have a lot of different things to cover.
- 0:13We're going to go through kind of a deep dive recovery talk.
- 0:19It's the new year. You're probably got goals
- 0:21getting after it, getting after it, upping your training.
- 0:25If you're up in your training, you should probably up your
- 0:27recovery. So I'll go through all the
- 0:29things that I think about when it comes to recovery.
- 0:33I'm going to do a bunch of deer hunting FAQs.
- 0:37So a lot of questions that I get from maybe like non hunters or
- 0:43runners or hikers that share the same space but maybe don't know
- 0:49some things about hunting. So I'll do kind of a deep dive
- 0:52into that, talk a little bit about discipline.
- 0:56I have a sledding story I'm going to share.
- 0:58We'll do a little bit of Patriots talk.
- 1:02The peak snow devil snowshoe race happened last weekend.
- 1:06We'll touch on that briefly. I have a, a No country for old
- 1:11men quote and reflection that hit me mid mountain run last
- 1:18week, which I kind of like, Like I, I was like, Oh my gosh, I
- 1:23think I know what that scene meant.
- 1:25So we'll talk about that. I messed up on a grid fact last
- 1:29week, so I have to, I have to right that wrong.
- 1:33I can't believe I messed that up.
- 1:35And then maybe we'll do a little bit of ski season talk 'cause
- 1:38skiers are having a winter to remember.
- 1:45Yeah. So that's what we've got today.
- 1:47I did, I was going to go up north today, but I, I, I ended
- 1:50up doing a more local mountain run.
- 1:53So we got out for a couple hours today.
- 1:55It's getting pretty cold. It's getting pretty windy as the
- 1:59day is going on. I didn't look at the weather for
- 2:03today or for the weather for this weekend.
- 2:05So I don't know. But it, it feels like it's going
- 2:07to be really cold and really windy.
- 2:09But I have not seen or heard anything about the weather this
- 2:12weekend, But we'll see how it turns out.
- 2:15I mean, right now I'm all bundled up, but that's that's
- 2:19that's what we have today. No, obviously it's going to be
- 2:23super cold this weekend. Yeah, the temps in the mountains
- 2:26this weekend are frigid. I was looking for the next
- 2:30couple days. Negative 30s, negative 40s,
- 2:33negative 50. Wind chill on all of the peaks.
- 2:36So if you are braving that weather, be careful.
- 2:40Goggle up, don't have any skin exposed and if you are hitting
- 2:45the treadmill or indoor bike or whatever it may be, I'll be
- 2:51there with you. We're going to I'm going to be
- 2:52grinding some treadmill miles this weekend.
- 2:55I've gotten out in the crazy temps before and it's just, it's
- 3:00just sometimes it can be a hassle And so I got a good
- 3:03mountain running today. I'll bundle up for a day or two
- 3:07and then I'll get back out there hopefully like Sunday.
- 3:10So I'm kind of being a baby this weekend, dodging the weather.
- 3:13But if you're getting out there, good for you.
- 3:15You're braver, braver than me. But be be prepared because it is
- 3:20freezing. I looked at the weather and it
- 3:22was going to be -10 in Lincoln in the morning, real feel
- 3:26tomorrow. So the real feel on the peaks is
- 3:30going to be like probably 20, negative 20.
- 3:32I don't know, crazy cold. But everyone's talking about it.
- 3:37So it's it's not out of the blue here, but all right, so we'll no
- 3:41actually one thing quick before we dive into the the topics
- 3:45today, I wanted to do a 62nd training lesson for you all.
- 3:52Everybody knows in the winter you should probably be doing
- 3:55strength training that you've been putting off trying to get
- 3:58stronger when you're staying indoors more.
- 4:02And I think weight training is awesome.
- 4:04You should be doing that in the winter.
- 4:05But also, I think all mountain runners should at least do 1
- 4:09block of a weighted Stairmaster, maybe months.
- 4:15So some sort of training block. I think it is a it's, it's a
- 4:20different form of weight training, but it's just as
- 4:22important. Getting stronger going up steep
- 4:25inclines is extremely important for mountain running.
- 4:28And it's probably a stimulus that you have not had before.
- 4:33So one that just means you're going to be able to make quick
- 4:36gains like quick strength gains on it.
- 4:40And you can do must you can do this as a muscular endurance
- 4:42workout. I really, really heavy pack do
- 4:45304560 minutes on the stairs or I just got finished the block
- 4:50doing shorter reps running on the stairs.
- 4:54So I was wearing about 10% of my body weight doing one minute
- 4:58intervals running up the Stairmaster and it's a great
- 5:01stimulus. It's going to get you stronger
- 5:04and it's probably something you shouldn't be doing.
- 5:06So if you haven't been doing it, give it a try, especially in the
- 5:09winter, it's kind of fun. It's a different workout and you
- 5:12can really get make some good gains on your uphill running.
- 5:16If you have any questions, send me an e-mail at
- 5:19andrew@runmountainpeaks.com and if you are interested in run
- 5:24coaching, go to runmountainpeaks.com.
- 5:27All right, now we're going to get into this topics.
- 5:30So what do we want to start with here?
- 5:32I guess I'll just start with the sledding story.
- 5:34We're going to some of these are quicker.
- 5:36So we'll actually no, we're going to start with the peak
- 5:38Snow Devil Snowshoe race. So this is a race in Pittsfield,
- 5:42Vt snowshoe race. There's a 10K, half marathon,
- 5:47marathon, 100K and 100 mile and it's been a long standing race.
- 5:53I've I've heard things about it for a long time.
- 5:56It's been going on for I think over a decade.
- 5:58It's kind of a classic Vermont winter grueling.
- 6:02It's got a good amount of vert in it and you're wearing
- 6:04snowshoes usually. So that is the race that
- 6:08happened last weekend. I'm scouring the web.
- 6:11I'm trying to find results from the the race, but I don't know
- 6:15if they didn't post it yet or the Spartan.
- 6:18It's one of the Spartan races. So the Spartan races I feel like
- 6:21are always kind of harder maybe to track 'cause they have kind
- 6:25of their whole big brand or conglomerate going.
- 6:28So they're, you know, they just have a hub for all these races
- 6:31and websites. They have all these events and
- 6:33so maybe they keep it behind. You know, you have to do it to
- 6:36see the results. So I couldn't find the results.
- 6:39So I don't have anything to report on for you guys this
- 6:42week. But if everything works out, I
- 6:45will be interviewing somebody who ran the marathon at that
- 6:49race who I think is going to be an awesome interview.
- 6:52I'm super excited to meet him and get his story on the race
- 6:56and just his story in general. So no results this week, but
- 7:00stay tuned for an interview coming soon.
- 7:04That was a peak Snow Devil Sunshine race recap.
- 7:07Next up we will do the sledding story next.
- 7:10So a little bit of nostalgia Throwback went sledding.
- 7:15Me and Jocelyn go sledding this past weekend.
- 7:19It's snowy. I feel like in the winter
- 7:21there's not as many. Like I like to get out for
- 7:23little walks or, or walks in the woods, do little things when I
- 7:27have some free time. But in the winter it's a little
- 7:29bit harder to kind of convince yourself to get out.
- 7:31So we, we had a little idea. My parents had boogie boards at
- 7:35the, at the house and I was over there.
- 7:36I was like, let's take these down a sled hill 'cause I don't
- 7:41skier snowboards. So I don't really get that, you
- 7:44know, I don't really get that excitement of going down a hill
- 7:47fast. So we pick up the big boogie
- 7:49boards and I'm like, I don't even know if this is going to
- 7:51work. It's kind of fluffy snow, but
- 7:53who knows? I know this hill in Amherst we
- 7:55used to go to as a kid. I won't, I won't call it out,
- 7:59but it's like you go under, you go through a little culvert, you
- 8:01get to the other side. Big sledding hell.
- 8:03I'm like, maybe if a couple people have been there, it'll be
- 8:09all packed down. And we can, we can, we can go
- 8:10down a couple times. So we show up there.
- 8:13I don't know when this was last weekend.
- 8:14And the hill is packed. I mean, there's at least 50 kids
- 8:19on the cell, 50 kids. There's parents at the top.
- 8:22There's, there's, there's everyone is sledding on the
- 8:25cell. I'm like, wow, OK.
- 8:26We, we were not the first ones to think of this.
- 8:29And we get up to the top and we're thinking, what, what are
- 8:32we doing here? This is just kind of silly, but
- 8:35we're, we're still going to do it.
- 8:37And we get up to the top. And there was one guy actually
- 8:39kind of like our age. I, it didn't seem like it was
- 8:43his kid, but maybe it could have been his kid, obviously, but
- 8:47this kid kind of goes down and we, we had just got to the top.
- 8:52Kid goes down the sledding hail and he hits this bump, this
- 8:55little jump that was made. The sled goes one way, the kid
- 8:59goes the other way, somersaulting in the air.
- 9:02And the guy just, he's just like, oh, whoa.
- 9:05He was like, he, he likes the jumps, but I didn't think he
- 9:08knew there was a jump on that one.
- 9:11And then you're just seeing all these kids.
- 9:13Half of the kids are just wiping out every this, this hill is
- 9:17super steep, super fast. I mean, everyone has different
- 9:20kinds of sleds. Some of them are like very
- 9:22stable tubes. And then some of them are just
- 9:24these tiny little things. But kids wiping out, tumbling,
- 9:28going everywhere. There was this one kid.
- 9:32He had this really aerodynamics small kind of compact sled and
- 9:37he fit in it really good and he just went down it kind of like
- 9:42the luge or or the bobsled in the Olympics.
- 9:45He just went down it all tucked up aerodynamic and he was making
- 9:48zero facial expressions, just ripping down the hill.
- 9:52He would get up, walk to the top and do it again, just like
- 9:54robotic sledding behavior. So we ended up doing like 2.
- 9:59We did a few, maybe 3 or 4 rips down.
- 10:03It was pretty fun. We got going, but I don't
- 10:06actually, the big boogie boys actually did work pretty good on
- 10:09the sledding hill, I will say that.
- 10:11But then we were like, all right, we have to get out of
- 10:14here. We have to get out of here.
- 10:16So that was a good like throwback.
- 10:18If you haven't gone sledding in a while, see, see, see what you
- 10:21can scrap up piece of plastics, piece of good cardboard,
- 10:26something like that and hit hit 1 sledding hill this winter.
- 10:29And this is coming from a non ski or non snowboarder.
- 10:31So probably everyone's like, I'm not going sledding.
- 10:33I'm just going to go skiing like an adult, which I should do, but
- 10:37I didn't. So that that was the sledding
- 10:41story. What else we got here?
- 10:43Oh, the grid fact mess up. Oh my gosh, how did I mess this
- 10:46up? I, I think I said in the podcast
- 10:48last week, I, I brought up my phone 'cause I had it written
- 10:51down. So I didn't mess it up and I
- 10:53still messed it up. So the fact was what was the
- 10:56most finished grid peak? And I thought it was like, oh,
- 11:00I'm, I'm really jazzing up this podcast.
- 11:02I'm doing some research, I'm getting prepped.
- 11:03I'm going to throw to a guest a little question.
- 11:07And I had the fact wrong and nobody called me out on it, but
- 11:11I just I had, I had I messed it up.
- 11:13I don't know how I messed it up, but I did.
- 11:16So I think in that last week I said it was Canon, then
- 11:20Jefferson, then Moose as the most finished grid peak.
- 11:24The actual list, sorry, mother, the actual list was Jefferson
- 11:29was #1 Moose a lock was number 2, and then Canon was not the
- 11:33one, it was 3. So I mean, adding up numbers, my
- 11:39brain sometimes will just make insane mistakes.
- 11:42I think it can be very good a lot of the times, but sometimes
- 11:45it just like mess it up. So I messed that up.
- 11:47I'm owning up to it, hopefully righting the wrong.
- 11:51I was going to make that a little clip, but then I couldn't
- 11:54'cause I was like, this is just wrong.
- 11:55So I didn't make that clip. I made a different clip, but
- 11:58that was a grid fact mess up. And I just wanted to clarify the
- 12:02other thing in the list, 'cause I'm like, oh, do I have this
- 12:04wrong too? No, S kinsman being one of the
- 12:09peaks that had not had a grid finish on it.
- 12:12That was actually correct. N kinsman has had two grid
- 12:16finishes, but S kinsman has had zero.
- 12:19So that fact which I was like, oh, I think I messed that up.
- 12:22That was actually correct. And I just can't, I cannot
- 12:25comprehend how that is possible. I actually, I, I cannot
- 12:30comprehend how that's possible. I guess I could have looked at
- 12:33the months, but I guess somebody just grab S Kinsman if they were
- 12:39doing like a Mount Wolf or coming on the Kinsman wrench
- 12:43trail from the other way. But that is very strange because
- 12:46not a lot of people would. Hey, I'm going to go do South
- 12:48Kinsman only today from from Mount Wolf.
- 12:53But so that is the grid fact clarification.
- 12:56When I saw that I had messed that fact up, I actually I
- 12:59started sweating and I'm like, I let the people down.
- 13:01This is horrible. I have misinformation out there.
- 13:04I've said this before and I will keep saying this.
- 13:06I am going to make mistakes on this podcast.
- 13:08I am going to say stupid things on this podcast.
- 13:11But as long as I own up to it and and just keep rolling, then
- 13:17then it's all good. So that was the last thing here.
- 13:21And before we get into the two big talk topics, the recovery
- 13:25talk and the deer hunting FAQSI have one more little quick thing
- 13:31that I'm going to do. And this was was on the
- 13:33Kinsman's. Yeah, it was on the Kinsman's
- 13:35last weekend. This was mid Kinsman Ridge.
- 13:40I love the kinsman's. The weather wasn't great, but so
- 13:42there wasn't a ton of views. But I do love the Kinsman's and
- 13:45I'm mid stride on the Kinsman's. And what did I do?
- 13:50I had my my little throw over jacket on me and I pulled that
- 13:55out of my pack. And when I throw that over
- 13:57myself in the winter, I usually just put it over my pack.
- 14:01So you can't really access the pack pockets as as good.
- 14:05And it looks like I'm like not even wearing a pack.
- 14:09But so I threw that on and I went to grab a little bottle of
- 14:12Maple syrup in my pack pocket and I was going to put that in
- 14:15my pants pocket so it was more accessible.
- 14:18And I go to throw it in my pants pocket.
- 14:21But the one pocket I was going to put it in, I had just my key
- 14:26in it. And I was like, no, do not.
- 14:29If you have a key, your car key that you need to drive your
- 14:32vehicle away from, do not put anything else with that key.
- 14:37Because if you go to grab that something else you're going to,
- 14:40you're going to probably get the key.
- 14:42It's going to fall out in the snow.
- 14:44It's going to be mayhem. I experienced that once I didn't
- 14:47drop the key. I'm not going to name names.
- 14:49My mother dropped the key in the snow, but I'm not going to name
- 14:52names. Would not do that to her.
- 14:55So you don't want to do that. And so I put it in my other
- 14:58pocket and I and it and it came to my head because I have a lot
- 15:02of movie quotes, just like quotes or little scenes or stuff
- 15:06in my head. I feel like that just come out
- 15:07when I'm running or just in general in life.
- 15:09But I I said, don't put it in your pocket.
- 15:13You don't put it in your pocket. And that came to me.
- 15:15And that line is from No Country for Old Men, which No Country
- 15:19for Old Men. I used to watch that movie
- 15:22before some of my ultras. I don't know why.
- 15:25It's just kind of like a chilling Western murder kind of
- 15:28movie. So I don't know why I would
- 15:29always watch that. But I really do like that movie.
- 15:32It's one of those movies like Goodfellas Casino or something
- 15:35like that's just on all the time on TV.
- 15:38And if it's on, you got to watch it.
- 15:40But no country for old men. It's the scene when Anton Sugar
- 15:46walks into the gas station after I think he he killed that guy
- 15:49with all the chickens and then needed gas or something.
- 15:52And he walks in there and and he goes to buy something.
- 15:56I'm pretty sure the counter guy was like, oh, it'll be $0.10.
- 15:58He's like OK. And Anton doesn't say anything.
- 16:01But then the guy behind the counter is like y'all getting
- 16:04any rain up your way. And for some reason, this this
- 16:08pisses Anton off and he goes, what is it any business of
- 16:13yours? And he's like, I didn't mean
- 16:16anything by it. He's like and, and, and this is
- 16:20like the whole scene of in the, the premise of the movie, Anton
- 16:25is like death. And if you see him, you're,
- 16:27you're going to die or something.
- 16:28And then he, he, he, he just goes in on this, this gas
- 16:32station worker. He's like, you live in that
- 16:34house out back here. He's like, yeah, you know, my,
- 16:37my, my wife's family grew up here.
- 16:40And he's like spits out his water.
- 16:42He goes, you inherited it. He's like, I don't know if you
- 16:46want to. That's if that's the way you
- 16:47want to put it. And he's like, there's no other
- 16:49way to put it. That's how it is.
- 16:51And it's just the scene is getting like more and more
- 16:54tense. And this guy, it's the middle of
- 16:56nowhere. It's just like, who is this guy?
- 16:58He's being really weird, being really kind of a aggressive, but
- 17:02in this calm, weird, scary manner.
- 17:04And then he's like, how? And then this is like the famous
- 17:07line, like how much have you ever lost on a coin toss?
- 17:11He goes, I don't know, Mr. He's like, how much have you lost?
- 17:17He's like, see this coin, call it.
- 17:20He's like, well, I got to know what we're calling it for.
- 17:23He's like, call it. I'm not going to call it if I
- 17:26don't know what we're calling it.
- 17:27He's like, if I don't know what I'm calling it for, what do I
- 17:31have to lose? He's like, you have everything
- 17:33to lose. Call it.
- 17:35And it's like getting tense, like, is this guy going to kill
- 17:37me over this coin toss? He's like, Sir, we got to close.
- 17:43We got to close. He was like, why?
- 17:44What time do you close? He's like, now we close now he's
- 17:47like call it. He's like, I'm not going to call
- 17:50it. He's like call it.
- 17:52And then he's like, all right, if I have to call it heads then
- 17:58and he flips it up and it's like very tense and that comes down
- 18:02heads and he goes well done. And the guy's like weight off of
- 18:06my shoulder. And it's just like a very tense
- 18:10scene. And then the guy takes and he
- 18:12puts in his pocket and he goes, don't put it in your pocket.
- 18:15He's like, what? Why?
- 18:16He's like, That's your lucky quarter.
- 18:18Don't just put it in your pocket.
- 18:20And the guy's like, well, where should I put it?
- 18:22Anywhere not in your pocket. He's like, 'cause then it will
- 18:25just get mixed in with the rest of the quarters and it will just
- 18:27be a regular quarter. He goes, which it is, and then
- 18:31walks out and that's the scene. So so I had to do pieces of
- 18:36that. So the way that I think I always
- 18:41thought about the scene was obviously, Oh my God, this guy
- 18:44got lucky. If it was Tails, he was just
- 18:47going to kill him. So that's like the scary part of
- 18:49the scene and everybody kind of gets that.
- 18:51But I always was like thinking of why did he say that's your
- 18:56lucky quarter, don't put it in your pocket.
- 18:58I guess it makes sense, Like he kind of just won your life, but
- 19:00don't put it in your pocket. But I kind of was like, why was
- 19:04he such a stickler about putting it in his pocket?
- 19:06Like, where should he put it? And what finally dawned on me on
- 19:10the kinsman's don't put it in your pocket.
- 19:14I think the quarter obviously represents his life.
- 19:18It represents his life. And I think Anton Bai, obviously
- 19:22he just won his life in a lottery.
- 19:23It's like, you know, that's one thing in general, you only live
- 19:27one life. Nobody knows what can happen.
- 19:30You got to, you got to live it now, which is obviously one
- 19:33thing, but also I think him not putting it in your pocket is him
- 19:39realizing that he has one life. If you put the quarter, you just
- 19:44won your life, dude. If you just put your life in
- 19:47your pocket and forget about that, this is your one life,
- 19:51you're going to just get mixed in with all the rest of the
- 19:53people just going through life, going through the motions, doing
- 19:57whatever. This is your one life.
- 20:00Don't forget it. That's the metaphor of don't put
- 20:03it in your pocket. And so everybody listening, you
- 20:06only have one life and everyone hears these quotes and hears
- 20:09these things and things like, no, I understand that.
- 20:11But don't put it away. Don't put it off on, Oh, I'll,
- 20:15I'll go after something I want to do later.
- 20:17Do whatever. Never forget that you got to
- 20:20live your life now and just don't sock it in like most
- 20:24people. You know, if you got something
- 20:26you want to go after, you got to go after it now.
- 20:28Because I feel like just, you know, the whole it's like
- 20:33society, we're all just like in this kind of churning thing
- 20:36where it's like you go to work, you get paid.
- 20:38You know what's that? You go to work, you get paid,
- 20:40you eat food, you go to bed, you go, you go to sleep, you wake
- 20:43up, you go to work, you eat food, you go to bed, you go to
- 20:45sleep, you wake up and it's like up and it's like, don't get in
- 20:50that cycle. It's so easy to say, I can do
- 20:52this, this or this down the line.
- 20:55You have to remember this is your one life.
- 20:58You never know when it's going to be up and you got to just
- 21:01take chances and do your opportunity and do everything
- 21:04you want to do now. Don't wait 5-10, twenty years,
- 21:09'cause I think a lot of people like, you know, they say lots of
- 21:12old people, they get to the end of life.
- 21:14What did you regret? It's just like not realizing,
- 21:17not going after something, not realizing the time that I have.
- 21:22Don't basically this is a warning.
- 21:25Don't put the quarter in your pocket.
- 21:27Don't wake up in 20 years and be and blink it's 20 years later
- 21:31and and you didn't do things you want to do keep the quarter out.
- 21:35I don't know where should we hold our quarters?
- 21:37Should we bring the quarters and and our running vests?
- 21:40Maybe that's maybe that's the thing.
- 21:41If you have a lucky quarter, start bringing it in your
- 21:43running vest, purposely put it in every day so you don't forget
- 21:46it. OK.
- 21:50That was the No Country for Old Men talk.
- 21:52So I think we covered all of the small things and we will get
- 21:57into the big two topics today that I wanted to cover and hold
- 22:08on. Yeah, so we'll start with the
- 22:13recovery talk. Like I said, it's the new year,
- 22:19people have new plans, new ambitions, and I think the new
- 22:22year is a great time to to get that kind of rejuvenation, you
- 22:27know, maybe get rid of some things or take some things off
- 22:30your plate, feel a little bit lighter, have that motivation,
- 22:33start going after your goals for this year.
- 22:35But in training, that usually means putting on big races and
- 22:40starting to train more. And I think whenever you're
- 22:42training more 1, you have to increase, you're loading your
- 22:47training volume in a smart manner so you don't get hurt.
- 22:51But also if you were going to step up your training, you
- 22:55really need to step up your recovery.
- 22:57So what do I think the most important recovery things?
- 23:01This is like my recovery hierarchy for, for endurance
- 23:06training, for ultra running. And there's a lot of things you
- 23:11see online, a lot of products, a lot of supplements, the
- 23:16strategies and all these things and studies that go with it.
- 23:18There's so much information out there, but I think the basics do
- 23:2490% of the work when it comes to recovery.
- 23:28And the number one thing, which you heard it 1000 times, sleep
- 23:33is the number, your number one recovery tool.
- 23:36It is legitimately A superpower. When you're sleeping, you are,
- 23:43it is it is the human superpower.
- 23:48And everybody knows the importance of sleep.
- 23:52You recover when you're resting and when you're sleeping.
- 23:56So if you're training but not sleeping, you're basically
- 23:59stressing your body but not allowing it to build back
- 24:02stronger. And that training that you're
- 24:05doing and not recovering from is just like, wait, you're just
- 24:08kind of wasting your time. Maybe you're doing some mental
- 24:11training, but a lot of it is kind of just wasting effort and
- 24:15energy. If you're not recovering from
- 24:17training, it is unproductive and you need like your body's entire
- 24:22healing process happens with good sleep.
- 24:25So everybody knows this, but I don't think people put the
- 24:28importance on sleep that they should.
- 24:32If you if you are not sleeping 9 or 10 hours every day or getting
- 24:38like 8 hours of sleep plus a little nap every single day,
- 24:41right? I would say 30 minutes of sleep
- 24:44extra is going to be better than 30 minutes of anything else you
- 24:50can do for recovery. So think about what that means.
- 24:54If you just carve out time in your day, 30 minutes more to
- 24:58sleep more, that is better than stretching, foam rolling,
- 25:03supplements, all of these recovery tools that people try
- 25:07to like sell you online. All you have to do is sleep a
- 25:13little bit more. And I think people just don't
- 25:15take that serious. And there are so many protocols
- 25:21and things that you can do to get better sleep that are a
- 25:25little bit time consuming or or maybe a hassle to some people.
- 25:28But it really just comes down to make more time to sleep.
- 25:33Think about how much time you spend on your phone.
- 25:35If you turn the phone off 1/2 hour earlier at night and just
- 25:38go to bed, that is going to do wonders for you in recovery.
- 25:42So if you're serious about training, you got a big ulcer
- 25:45that you want to do or big races or whatever it is this year,
- 25:49you're up in your training volume and you are just sleeping
- 25:52the same. You are essentially and you're
- 25:55not sleeping that 8910 hours every single night, not every
- 25:58single night, 6 out of seven nights a week.
- 26:00I would say you're not sacrificing as, as, as much as
- 26:07you could be. And I don't even know if it's a
- 26:09huge sacrifice. It takes a little bit of
- 26:11awareness, but it's not a huge sacrifice.
- 26:13Most people like to sleep. I have a hard time sleeping
- 26:16sometimes, but a lot of people like to sleep, take sleep
- 26:20seriously. So that's the number one thing
- 26:24that I think a lot of people probably don't do or don't place
- 26:27enough importance on that you should start doing.
- 26:29So that is my #1 recovery tip #2 and this is probably a close
- 26:34second, especially for endurance training is eating enough food
- 26:40slash staying hydrated. And we'll stay put more emphasis
- 26:44on the food because everybody knows you should stay hydrated.
- 26:48Every cell in your body uses water.
- 26:50You need it in the recovery process.
- 26:52Stay hydrated, drink water, make sure you're getting sodium
- 26:56electrolytes. Eating enough though is so, so
- 27:00important because we talk about sleep being the time where your
- 27:04body rebuilds itself. To rebuild itself, you need the
- 27:09building blocks of the macro nutrients in food.
- 27:14The nutrients in food is what your body uses to grow yourself
- 27:17back up. And if you're not prone to
- 27:20providing enough of it, again, you're just going to be under
- 27:23recovering and that extra training that you're doing is
- 27:26probably just harming you or you're not gaining from it as
- 27:29much as you could be. O sleep enough and eat enough,
- 27:34because I've said this before, training, endurance training is
- 27:38just stressing your body and then letting it recover.
- 27:41Stressing your body, letting it recover over and over and over
- 27:45again. That's all it is.
- 27:46And so if your training's great, but your recovery is not great,
- 27:50you're just leaving gains on the table.
- 27:52So get enough sleep and eat enough food.
- 27:55How do you know if you're eating enough food?
- 27:57If you want to be really, really good about it, really serious
- 28:00about it, track your food. Eat the same food every day or
- 28:04the same amount of calories, and if you're maintaining weight,
- 28:07you're good. If you feel like you have energy
- 28:10for most of your runs, you're good.
- 28:12But if you don't have energy, you're losing weight that you
- 28:15don't need to be losing or you're starting to get injured a
- 28:19lot or all these things or you're gaining weight, you're
- 28:23feeling, you know, you're eating too much food.
- 28:26All of these things you have to adjust to get in that sweet spot
- 28:29of eating enough food to fuel your training.
- 28:33And aside from just being able to recover more and aside from
- 28:38just food being the building blocks, if you're under fueling,
- 28:44one that is just making you more injury prone.
- 28:48And two, bone stress injuries, which are the worst running
- 28:52injuries that set you back so much.
- 28:54Those like the number one reason people develop bone stress
- 28:58injuries. One of the top reasons is under
- 29:01fueling. So you're just risking, you're
- 29:04probably not recovering like you should and you're risking your
- 29:07body, which could set you back, which is never going to help you
- 29:11get to your goals. So take eating seriously.
- 29:14Eat majority Whole Foods, good few foods, lots of nutrients,
- 29:19but then if you need to add on a little bit of processed foods on
- 29:23top of everything to make sure you're meeting your calorie
- 29:25goals and your calorie needs, do that.
- 29:29So those are probably the biggest too.
- 29:31The next thing that I want to talk about managing your stress.
- 29:34So like I said, training you stress the body and then you
- 29:38recover your body's central nervous system does not
- 29:43distinguish physical, emotional and mental stress from each
- 29:47other. If you are having a lot of
- 29:49stress in in like mental stress in life.
- 29:55Oh my gosh, we have a dog, we have a, we have a, we have a
- 29:58potential coat. Second guess on the podcast, a
- 30:02dog, but he doesn't see me. OK, what was I saying?
- 30:07We're going to keep that part in.
- 30:10Yeah, if you have a ton of stress outside of training, that
- 30:15is going to drain your your system and drain your central
- 30:19nervous system. Because ultra running it's you
- 30:22have to do a lot of miles, long days, long runs, long races, and
- 30:27it does take a toll on your nervous system.
- 30:30And if you have a lot of mental stress from work, from life, if
- 30:35you have a lot of emotional stress for whatever reason,
- 30:37relationships, etcetera, those things are going to take away
- 30:41from that bucket that you have of total stress in your body.
- 30:47And if you're trying to train super hard, but you also have a
- 30:50ton of other stress in your life, it's probably just going
- 30:53to burn you out, make you more prone to injury, and your body's
- 30:57going to be in a state where it can't recover from your training
- 31:00as well as it could if all those areas in your life were feeling
- 31:04better. So this is another thing when it
- 31:07comes to recovery, managing your stress in your life is a huge
- 31:12thing. I always tell people on your
- 31:15rest day, I think most people should take a rest day every
- 31:17week. That should be your day to
- 31:19tackle the BS that life throws at you.
- 31:21You got appointments, you got errands to run, you got things
- 31:24to do, something breaks, yadda, yadda, yadda.
- 31:26If you got to return all of these things that are kind of
- 31:28hassles and put more stress in your day, take care of those
- 31:32things on your rest day so that the rest of the week you have
- 31:36more time to train and not have to worry about doing extra
- 31:41things, running around. Because it does take a lot out
- 31:44of you. If you're running around to
- 31:45appointments doing all these things in a day, that's probably
- 31:491/2 hour, hour, 2 hours that you could be doing some sort of
- 31:52training endurance thing, but but you're not and it's just
- 31:56adding stress for no reason. So the best that you can try to
- 32:00find balance in your life outside of training and that's
- 32:03going to allow you to train more without burning out, crashing
- 32:07out, going down that route. Next up, I would say the fourth
- 32:11thing, active recovery to just get blood flow to your body and
- 32:16specifically your legs, a 5 to 10 minute walk just to circulate
- 32:22that blood around is probably going to be better for you than
- 32:27most things that you're thinking of as recovery.
- 32:30We talked about how do you repair yourself?
- 32:33It's food, it's sleep and what is the shuttles that that get
- 32:38these nutrients to your muscles to do this recovery.
- 32:41It is your blood. That's what carries oxygen,
- 32:44carries nutrients, carries water, all these things to your
- 32:47tissues and you need blood in your in your those areas that
- 32:53you have strained to recover. And so the best way to do this
- 32:58is just go for a quick walk, a quick bike ride.
- 33:01But like where your heart rate is not even in the 100, it's
- 33:04low. It's not even like a training
- 33:06thing at all, just enough to get that blood flow going.
- 33:10I even say if you have an errand to run, go to the store, you
- 33:12walk around the store for a handful of minutes, boom.
- 33:15That is part of recovery. It's just getting more blood
- 33:19flow to the inflamed tissues to repair itself quicker.
- 33:24And, and I really do believe that some light walks, a little
- 33:30bit of light stretching, anything like that to get to the
- 33:32muscles. Beautiful.
- 33:34It's awesome. If you can do one or two of
- 33:35those a day, I think that's going to aid your recovery a
- 33:38ton. And so that was my fourth thing.
- 33:42So that brings me to my 5th hierarchy of recovery hierarchy.
- 33:49Yeah. Importance is all of those
- 33:52recovery tools, commercial recovery tools, commercial
- 33:56recovery products. I think massages, massage guns,
- 34:01Norma tech boots, red light therapy, cryotherapy, all of
- 34:06these, all of these things, yes, they can help.
- 34:10Yes, people can make studies that say they're going to give
- 34:14you X amount recovery gains. Yes, I do believe like if you
- 34:18could do all those things like a professional athlete, you would
- 34:20recover a lot better. But if you are not doing the
- 34:23first four things, it's it's I think a waste of your time.
- 34:28I think you're leaving recovery on the table.
- 34:30Oh, I'm going to buy a pair of Normatex boots, but I sleep six
- 34:34hours every night. Like you don't need the boots.
- 34:39He definitely don't need the boots.
- 34:42Foam rolling. I think these things can be
- 34:45helpful. Some people don't believe in
- 34:47foam rolling, some people do. Some people don't believe in red
- 34:50light therapy, ice bath, some people do.
- 34:53The jury's out. There's lots of different
- 34:55studies, all these different things.
- 34:56Some of them help, some of them don't.
- 34:58Whatever you think. But if you're not doing the
- 35:00first four things, sleeping, eating enough, managing your
- 35:04stress, and then doing a light recovery, getting blood flowed
- 35:09to your, to your impaired muscles, your legs, or any, any
- 35:12spot where you're having a little bit of an injury or
- 35:15something that you want to take extra care of.
- 35:16If you're not doing those four things, you should not be
- 35:20looking into buying any of those recovery tools or even spending
- 35:24the time if your foam rolling for 1/2 hour a day.
- 35:28I think just go to bed 1/2 hour earlier or meal prep good foods
- 35:33so you're never down like like trying to scrap together some
- 35:37food where you got to get, you know, get some fast food or
- 35:39something like that. Those four things, the basics
- 35:43are the most important and you're going to get 90 plus
- 35:45percent of your recovery from those things.
- 35:49So make sure you're doing those right.
- 35:51It really, really does help, especially when you're building
- 35:54volume and and it's hard again, I know it's hard to be perfect
- 36:00on all of these things and this is actually a thing I want to
- 36:02talk about discipline, which I'll I'll do an example of, but
- 36:07it is really worth it and you have to do these things if you
- 36:10want to achieve your goals, if you want to achieve your maximum
- 36:13potential. I should say everyone has
- 36:15different goals, but I really think these things are
- 36:17important. So it an example, like I said,
- 36:22I, I, I have a little, I have a little ankle going on trying to
- 36:26figure it out. I won't get into it too in
- 36:28depth, but I have some ankle exercises I've been doing and
- 36:31two days of the last week I I didn't do them kind of tired.
- 36:35End of the day I got to go and I just didn't end up doing them.
- 36:39And do I think that that's going to set me back a ton?
- 36:42No, I really, I really don't think it is.
- 36:45I had a good run today, ankle was fine.
- 36:47But it is just something when it comes to discipline.
- 36:52If you have big goals, big ambitions, and that's what like
- 36:54a lot of ultra runners do, just because the races in general are
- 36:58huge, you need to do all these habits and continuously do them,
- 37:05whether you feel like doing them or not.
- 37:06And that's just like discipline. And the way that I think about
- 37:09it, like, I don't know why I had this written down, but I'll just
- 37:12talk about it. Somebody like a Tom Brady, when
- 37:15you hear or like a LeBron James, the longevity in the sport, all
- 37:19the things that they were doing, if you hear their routines and
- 37:22what they did for decades straight, Tom Brady was like, I
- 37:26just heard something recently. Obviously he's the GOAT.
- 37:29So it's like, and maybe we'll do Patriot stock after this.
- 37:32He's the GOAT, but it's like he had this his, you know, if you
- 37:36believe in the TV 12, he was like, I've been taking
- 37:38multivitamins every single day. Never miss a MA for 20 years.
- 37:41I've been doing all this stretching, longevity, all these
- 37:45things for my entire career. Every day you hear about LeBron
- 37:48James when he first got into the league, he was stretching and
- 37:51all these people like, what is this guy doing?
- 37:54There are people who are willing to do those annoying things or
- 37:59the the things that that just take a little bit of energy, but
- 38:02it's hard to really do every single day.
- 38:04There are people out there willing to do that every single
- 38:08day. And those are like the greats
- 38:10that you see in any, any aspect, any sport, any whatever.
- 38:15And so for me, like last week, I trained really good.
- 38:19I did lots of ankle exercise. I did, I ate good, I did all of
- 38:22these things. It was a productive, good week
- 38:24of training. But there are things that I
- 38:26could have done a little bit more that I didn't.
- 38:30And that's something that you have to kind of own up to and,
- 38:33and think to yourself, am I doing everything I could be
- 38:37doing? And be honest with yourself.
- 38:40And I think that's where discipline comes in for a lot of
- 38:43these things, a lot of these recovery things that I'm talking
- 38:45that I talked about going, getting off your phone early,
- 38:48going to bed early. It's just little things where
- 38:52just so you know, you can never cheat yourself.
- 38:55You can lie to everybody in the world.
- 38:56You can say whatever you want, but you cannot lie to yourself.
- 39:01And there are people who are willing to to do all those
- 39:05things and, and never lie to themselves and say, I am doing
- 39:09everything I can and they actually do everything they can.
- 39:12And so that was just like a thing on discipline.
- 39:14A lot of this stuff just takes a little bit of discipline.
- 39:17You got to hold yourself accountable and you just got to
- 39:19do it because it pays off. And there are people out there
- 39:24doing more than you, even if you're like, no, I trained
- 39:27really good this week. I trained really hard, did
- 39:28everything I could. There's somebody who is, who is
- 39:30a little bit more disciplined, who worked a little bit harder
- 39:33than you out there. And that's just in the back of
- 39:35your mind. Everyone's got different goals,
- 39:37But if you got a goal that you're trying to win a race or
- 39:39do whatever, just think, all right, if there's, it's probably
- 39:43someone else who did those two ankle exercises, who's going to
- 39:46recover a little bit faster and is going to have one extra good
- 39:48week of training or good speed workout when I wasn't quite
- 39:51ready. And if you do that a few times a
- 39:57month, a dozen times every 2030 * a year, think about that
- 40:03compounded over 10 years. That's how people get great.
- 40:07So don't lie to yourself, be disciplined and and go after it.
- 40:14OK, Oh, the, the Patriots talk. We'll do the Patriots talk
- 40:17quick. I grew up in, in New England and
- 40:21I grew up, my mom is a mega sports fan.
- 40:25She, she grew up in Boston, watches all the sports.
- 40:29So we always watch all the sports.
- 40:31Grew up watching the Red Sox win the World Series.
- 40:34I got some pictures of me with with like 20 Red Sox hats on all
- 40:38different ways with sweater sweatshirts and all this stuff
- 40:41when I was younger when they first won the World Series.
- 40:45I've been here for the the Celtics, obviously the Patriots
- 40:48run Bruins. I grew up around Boston sports
- 40:52and obviously a lot of us are are a little bit privileged.
- 40:56But I wouldn't call myself a mega sports mega New England
- 41:00fan. Like I'm not over the moon.
- 41:02I don't watch every game. I don't, I keep track of it a
- 41:05ton. I like watching sports.
- 41:08I wouldn't say I watch a ton of it.
- 41:09I honestly listen to more part of my take podcast and like
- 41:12people talking about sports than I do actually watching sports
- 41:16because I do really love sports. I think sports are the best but
- 41:20I'm not a mega fan. But when they get into the
- 41:22playoffs, I'll, I'll start watching.
- 41:25So I started watching. I'm on the bandwagon, whatever
- 41:28you call it. If they lose, I'm not going to
- 41:30be too upset about it. But if they when they're
- 41:32winning, it's so cool. And the thing that has just
- 41:36struck me so hard is Drake, is it Drake, Drake may, May or
- 41:41Drake, Drake May, May. I don't know how you say it, but
- 41:45this dude has New England on his back right now.
- 41:51It rejuvenates this the the city, the Patriots in one year.
- 41:55Well, obviously last year, you know, he was on the team, but I
- 41:58mean, you can just feel it around New England.
- 42:00It is insane what is happening and everyone's talking about it.
- 42:03So I'm not going to just like go crazy on it.
- 42:05But I've been watching a few games and it has just been
- 42:09blowing my mind the things. So what was what was one of the
- 42:14games? Yeah, I just watched a few games
- 42:16this year and every game like May's just making these crazy
- 42:19passes, looking insane, putting the beat down on teams.
- 42:23And it's just every time makes a crazy throw.
- 42:25You're like, Oh my God, people love this guy.
- 42:30Everyone is on this guy's team. You see the the Instagram DMS
- 42:33that Drake May There's like one thing where it's like, yeah,
- 42:38what what your girls worried about your DMS being versus what
- 42:40it actually is. And it's just some guy like last
- 42:43year sending Drake may DMS of keep your head up king or
- 42:47something like that. Yeah, what he's doing for the
- 42:50city is incredible. And and I mean, I hope we just
- 42:54blow out the Broncos. Who knows with with Stidham in
- 42:56there and all the everyone thinks that patch should win.
- 42:59But if we go to a Super Bowl, Oh my God, I mean, people are
- 43:05already freaking out. But it is just it's fun to
- 43:07watch. Just I love watching the games.
- 43:09Everyone's in on it. So go Pats, go Drake, Drake May,
- 43:13May, Drake, Drake May may. Don't know which one it is.
- 43:18It's been fun to watch. It has been fun to watch.
- 43:21OK, that was a Patriots talk and we're going to end this on some
- 43:25deer hunting FA QS. So I've talked about it in a few
- 43:29of the podcast so far. And so I'll just, I'll just
- 43:34again give my like quick background.
- 43:36I started, I was, I started hunting and fishing when I was
- 43:40younger and I started deer hunting maybe when I was 1314,
- 43:47like started going up with my dad a little bit.
- 43:49I think I shot my first deer when I was 14 or 15.
- 43:52And then since then I've, I think I've got about 30 deer
- 43:57since then and about like, yeah, 151415 years.
- 44:01So averaging a little over 2 deer every year.
- 44:04Like I talked about fully a meat hunter, love venison.
- 44:09I eat a ton of venison. That's like the staple of my
- 44:11diet. And but I have like a good
- 44:14amount of experience. Like there's lots of people that
- 44:16are, that are much more experienced hunters.
- 44:18But I, I've been doing it for a while and I have a lot of
- 44:20experience and a lot of people in my life know that and they
- 44:24always ask me questions because people, I think people don't
- 44:28know much about it. And I think it's interesting the
- 44:30crossover between trail runners and hikers and hunters because a
- 44:37lot of the time they're sharing the same space, but the two
- 44:40don't really know anything about each other.
- 44:42And I don't think either sometimes neither group likes
- 44:45the other counterpart. Maybe sometimes, let's say, but
- 44:51so I'm going to do, I'm going to do a little bit of educational
- 44:54deer hunting talk. So if you're a runner or a
- 44:57hiker, stay tuned because I think these are we're going to
- 45:01kind of premise it around around kind of like basic information
- 45:04that that is I think of interest to you.
- 45:07So the first thing I have is where can you hunt Rules vary by
- 45:12state, but and New Hampshire's a little bit specific.
- 45:15So I'll stay in New Hampshire and most of New England is like
- 45:18this. If a piece of woods is not
- 45:21posted, like with those yellow no no trespassing signs or
- 45:25doesn't have no hunting rules or signs along it, it is legal for
- 45:30people to go on and hunt and recreate on it, which is a
- 45:35little bit different than a lot of the states.
- 45:38You know, in the Midwest or whatever.
- 45:39There's much more public land. And the reason is there's not a
- 45:42lot of public land around here. There's you know, every town has
- 45:45some parts of the land in the White Mountain National Forest,
- 45:48it's all public land, but a lot of the non National Forest or
- 45:52conservation land, it's just private.
- 45:56And so that's kind of one of the reasons.
- 45:58So anywhere that you can run and hike and you don't see no
- 46:01hunting signs, people can hunt there.
- 46:05So that's one thing to know. There are some rules about being
- 46:08away from roads and dwellings, like a dwelling, a building, you
- 46:13have to be about 100 yards away, which is not that far to be
- 46:16honest. And trails, unless a town has a
- 46:19certain bylaw on it, Conservation Commission has a
- 46:22certain bylaw. Usually you could, people can
- 46:25hunt along trails, which is not, we'll kind of talk about that,
- 46:29but there's no boundaries for recreational trails.
- 46:32There are boundaries for like roads, but it's only like 30
- 46:36feet off of a road that you have to get.
- 46:38So which is not, which is that's 10 yards, which is not so.
- 46:43So I think people, a lot of the woods is legal to hunt, which is
- 46:49something to know if if you're running in an area, people can't
- 46:52hunt there. And so when is the hunting
- 46:54season there are there are different, you know, species
- 46:57that you can hunt for, But I think deer hunting is the the,
- 47:00the most popular. So deer hunting is from
- 47:04mid-september in New Hampshire to mid-december.
- 47:08And a lot of people are like, oh wow, I didn't know that.
- 47:11Most of that time is bow hunting only.
- 47:14So for a month and a half, September to the end of October
- 47:17is bow only. And a lot less people bow hunt.
- 47:21The woods are a lot quieter. Obviously you don't hear bows.
- 47:23And yeah, a lot less people do it.
- 47:26So you don't really see a ton of people.
- 47:29You don't have to wear orange in a lot of states during bow
- 47:33season. So that's one thing where you
- 47:36don't even see hunters because if they're wearing camo, they're
- 47:38far in the woods. You probably don't see them as
- 47:40easily, but they are out there. And then for deer hunting, the
- 47:44regular firearm season is usually just most of November.
- 47:49We have a muzzleloader season, which is like a one shot gun.
- 47:53There are like the primitive muzzleloaders you got to put
- 47:56around in with black powder. They're they're a lot better.
- 48:00The technology's a lot better now.
- 48:01So they shoot very good, but they're just, you just have one
- 48:06shot that you're going to have to reload.
- 48:07So it's not like just people shooting up the woods as much.
- 48:10There's a season for that. And then it's regular gun season
- 48:13during November and then into December a little bit and then
- 48:16ends and that's it. In Southern New Hampshire and
- 48:20and populated areas, there is a restriction that you cannot use
- 48:23a rifle. So where I grew up, you can't
- 48:27use a rifle in a lot of areas because the woods are so small.
- 48:30There's not like big woods up north, so you have to use either
- 48:33a shotgun or a muzzle loader. And then the other thing I want
- 48:37to touch on when when it's hunting season, there is a
- 48:40Turkey season in the fall, but also in the spring that happens
- 48:44during May. So a lot of people don't know
- 48:46that in May there are hunters in the woods and Turkey hunting is
- 48:51a lot more moving around action. You don't have to work.
- 48:54You don't wear camo because turkeys can actually see orange,
- 48:58so you don't want to wear orange.
- 48:59So lots of hunters are out there just in camo and they're moving
- 49:04around, they're calling to animals.
- 49:05Turkeys are very vocal gobbling hens and all these things.
- 49:09So they're all is also danger of people in the woods there.
- 49:13So you have to you have to be aware during that time of the
- 49:16year as well. And like where can you hunt?
- 49:21I personally, it's hard because in Southern New Hampshire, all
- 49:26of the pieces of woods that are like conservation areas, town
- 49:30known that you can kind of hike or run on, have lots of trails
- 49:33on. They are also the only woods in
- 49:36the area. So, so like that's the only
- 49:38place that most people can go and hunt.
- 49:41So there are more popular areas than others.
- 49:44And I think hunting around a popular area with lots of
- 49:47runners and trail hikers, I don't do it.
- 49:51And I, I really try not to do it.
- 49:53With a bow. It's a little bit different
- 49:55because you can't really shoot a bow far.
- 49:56But with a gun, you know, that goes a lot farther.
- 49:59I think you have to be much more a cautious and I think 90% of
- 50:03hunters are, but I think some hunters aren't.
- 50:06And so, you know, it takes both parties to be aware of these
- 50:10things to stay safe. But that is just something to be
- 50:15aware of. And I think the difficult thing
- 50:18about it is in Southern New Hampshire.
- 50:22And we'll talk about the conservation a little bit
- 50:25because hunting is the best form of conservation.
- 50:29It's not just controlling animal populations, but it's also
- 50:32collecting data on the animal populations and funding the
- 50:36research to preserve wildlife and recreation areas as well.
- 50:43So it's it's, you know, hunters are one of the biggest
- 50:46conservationists. It some people may not believe
- 50:49that, but as far as the money that they spend towards
- 50:52conservation, it's totally it's, it's the main funding source for
- 50:58all of these wildlife programs. So they definitely are doing
- 51:01that, but you have to hunt animal populations to keep them
- 51:06in check or they just take over landscapes.
- 51:09They can destroy vegetation. They they mess up the ecologic,
- 51:13each ecological functions of a, of an area, you have more deer
- 51:18kills, more deer interfering with humans.
- 51:20They affect crops, farming, all these things.
- 51:23So you have to keep them in control.
- 51:24And so you need people to hunt in these areas.
- 51:27And that's why they allow bow hunting.
- 51:28That's why they give extra tags in these areas.
- 51:32But they have to be able to basically intermingle with other
- 51:38trail users. And I think it's really just a
- 51:40thing of education and making sure everyone is going about it
- 51:45smart. So if it is a hunting season and
- 51:47you are running or hiking around during dusk, I think you should
- 51:50be wearing orange all the time. Because a lot of hunters, yeah,
- 51:54but a lot of people don't. Every hunter should be aware of
- 51:57their targets. But I think it is much easier
- 52:01and to be honest, if you hear something in the woods, but you
- 52:05can't see it yet. A lot of the time if a a hunter
- 52:08will raise their gun and that are those are situations where
- 52:13you never want to run into somebody who has a gun raised at
- 52:16you, even if this the safety is on is and it's there.
- 52:20And as soon as they see you, they put it down.
- 52:22It is a it is nerve racking. And so I understand when people
- 52:26are are uncomfortable with hunters in the woods, but in
- 52:29some sense that they need to be out there.
- 52:30They can be out there and it's just being aware.
- 52:34And I think all hunters, if you know there was a trail around
- 52:37you should not be in view or close to the trail.
- 52:41I think that is another priority of a hunter and I think a lot of
- 52:45people do that, one, because that's just not where the deer
- 52:48are going to be or like animals are going to be a lot of the
- 52:50times. But two, it's just like smart
- 52:52and you don't want to put anyone in an uncomfortable situation.
- 52:56That's my worst fear when I go out there.
- 52:58I never, I don't like seeing people because one, I just don't
- 53:01want to make them uncomfortable in the woods.
- 53:04As soon as I see somebody in the woods, like anywhere like that,
- 53:08because a lot of times you have to take a hiking trail in and
- 53:10then you go into a different piece of the woods.
- 53:12I always like put the gun straight at the down at the
- 53:15ground, try to say hi, like let them know that I am not a bad
- 53:21person because in the woods, even when I see a hunter, I am
- 53:26immediately like, all right, I need to get the vibe of this
- 53:28person. What is he doing with this gun?
- 53:29What is he doing right now? Because guns are crazy things.
- 53:34I'm not a a super big gun person.
- 53:36I don't really know a lot about guns.
- 53:37I only shoot the guns that get them sighted in and shoot, you
- 53:40know, when I go hunting, I think they're kind of a hassle and
- 53:44they're just not like one of my favorite things to be honest to
- 53:47deal with. But anytime I go to shoot a gun,
- 53:50you know, once a year or during hunting season, they are lethal
- 53:54weapons and they need to be taken serious.
- 53:58And, and that is obviously on the hunter.
- 54:02And so I, you know, if you, if you're intimidated or whatever,
- 54:05I, I totally understand. But just see how they're acting.
- 54:08And honestly, for me, if I'm running on a trail and I see a
- 54:11hunter, I just immediately usually just turn around and let
- 54:13them be and and and go, unless they're like walking on the
- 54:16trail and they're clearly like leaving or something tango to
- 54:18like make a nice cohesive relationship.
- 54:21But everyone uses recreation errors for different things.
- 54:25So you have to just learn to how to kind of cohabitate.
- 54:30And I think it's just education on both parts.
- 54:33Deer hunting for conservation I. Talked about this a little bit.
- 54:36I think there's lots of people who do a much better job
- 54:38speaking about this, so I won't go too into depth, but Steven
- 54:41Rinella is a good person. He's a a very good person.
- 54:45He speaks very well. He's very well educated.
- 54:48Go check out his views on kind of conservation as a whole.
- 54:54And another thing too, that I kind of wanted to touch on.
- 55:00I don't know how long we've been going 56.
- 55:06Yeah, I'll go on a quick. I am a.
- 55:08Meat hunter, like I said, and I I don't not that I don't
- 55:12understand. I definitely understand some
- 55:14people are just in it for trophy hunting.
- 55:17But the one thing I do want to say is because I think on the
- 55:19outside, a lot of people who are OK with hunting but don't like
- 55:23the trophy hunting, trophy hunting is actually Steve
- 55:29Rinella can talk. Better about this it is.
- 55:31One of the other best forms of conservation, because those
- 55:35people First off spend the most money.
- 55:38They tend to spend the most amount of money.
- 55:41And when they're going out, a lot of the time the people that
- 55:46are going out kind of doing the trophy hunting thing are like
- 55:49really going after like the biggest animals.
- 55:51They are dedicated and spend way more time than the average
- 55:56person. They actually respect and enjoy
- 56:02the animal more than anyone could even fathom.
- 56:04Like they put in so much energy, so much time to kill those
- 56:09animals. You have to just put in a lot
- 56:11more money and effort. And they are like the backbone
- 56:15of the funding side of conservation and allowing other
- 56:20animals to to mature and grow and only taking that mature
- 56:24animal from the woods that is no longer like a as you know, the
- 56:28peak breeding for a population. And so, yeah, people do a better
- 56:34job of talking about this stuff, but don't knock trophy hunting
- 56:38until you're educated on actually what it funds.
- 56:41Because no matter the reason out there, a lot of these wildlife
- 56:45programs need money and it's one of the best ways that they get
- 56:49money. So that was all, all the thing
- 56:52I'll say there. Next question I have, how many
- 56:55deer can you shoot? And again, this is a crazy
- 56:59question, 'cause when I tell people like, oh, I shot 5 deer
- 57:01last year, they're like, how, how can you even do that?
- 57:04Is that even legal? And they're, you know, First
- 57:07off, every state. You can get different tags.
- 57:09In every state and every state has different rules, but in New
- 57:13England you're an hour from in. In New Hampshire, you're an hour
- 57:17from Mass, you're an hour from Maine, you're an hour from
- 57:19Vermont. So you can theoretically get
- 57:21tags in all of those states, which is a cool opportunity that
- 57:25other states don't have. But it also, yeah, it's it's
- 57:31just a little bit unique, but it's just how how it runs for
- 57:34us. Non residents have to pay a lot
- 57:36more money than than residents, but in different states.
- 57:40But it is a way to get a lot of different tags.
- 57:43And then if you bow hunt, you usually get extra tags and then
- 57:47different zones that have more deer that need the conservation.
- 57:51You can get different doe tags or buck tags.
- 57:54So there's lots of different tags that you can get.
- 57:57And all these tags are wildlife biologists prescribe them per
- 58:02areas, per states, per methods to conserve deer populations and
- 58:08other populations. So if you see someone shooting a
- 58:10lot of deer, usually it's totally legal.
- 58:15What do you do with a deer after you shoot it?
- 58:19This is a good question. I'll, I'll give you like a quick
- 58:21rundown. When you first shoot a deer, you
- 58:24have to field dress it, which is like removing some of the guts
- 58:29from the animal, kind of like going into the carcass.
- 58:32And you, you're allowed to leave that stuff in the woods.
- 58:36And I think it's actually, it's not a ton of stuff.
- 58:38It's just like the stomach and the entrails and like the
- 58:40bladder and that kind of thing. But it is interesting because
- 58:44you leave that stuff in the woods and it's kind of like a
- 58:46mess everywhere. Most of the time you go back
- 58:48there in a day or two and coyotes or birds or whatever,
- 58:53foxes, anything in the air, scavengers clean it up and you
- 58:56would never know that there was a deer butcher direct field
- 58:59dressed right there, which is kind of crazy.
- 59:02So it's not wasting any of the meat or anything.
- 59:04It just goes back into the ecosystem.
- 59:08So that's the first thing you do and then I mean, you got to drag
- 59:12it out, which is obviously, which is honestly the biggest
- 59:15exercise that a lot of a lot of hunters get.
- 59:19But dragging a deer out of the woods, especially if you're a
- 59:22mile, a couple miles back in is a hall.
- 59:26I mean, it's obviously like a very rewarding thing to do, but
- 59:29it definitely, I'm thankful that I'm more in shape now doing
- 59:32endurance running because it makes the drags a lot easier,
- 59:35but they're still hard. But then you got to bring it
- 59:38home and you have to check it in.
- 59:43Usually you have to bring it into a check station.
- 59:45You can do it online too nowadays.
- 59:47But you check it in, which gives all the data about the deer,
- 59:51where you got it, how you got it, all of these things to the
- 59:53state. And then you have to butcher it.
- 59:57A lot of people send it to a butcher, and there's lots of
- 59:59places that will do kind of a, you know, deer butchering during
- 1:00:02the fall. But since I've been hunting, we
- 1:00:06always butcher it at home. And so I think this is like the
- 1:00:10biggest thing that I take pride in in hunting.
- 1:00:13And I said this before, I think it's a favorite activity that I
- 1:00:15do with my father, 'cause he's, my dad's pretty much taught me
- 1:00:18how to do all this stuff. And we are like a factory
- 1:00:23butchering deer now. Like we know exactly what to do.
- 1:00:26It's just like a nice thing in the fall.
- 1:00:28We're just boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 1:00:29When one person needs help unspoken, the other person just
- 1:00:33comes over, holds the thing or whatever, and then they go back
- 1:00:35to it. If one person's stuck on
- 1:00:37something, they don't want to do it anymore, the other person
- 1:00:39comes in. So we have a good system down.
- 1:00:41We've done a ton of deer and butchering a deer yourself when
- 1:00:47you bring it to a butcher, you know I don't want to.
- 1:00:50Some butchers are great, I'm sure, but sometimes they throw
- 1:00:53it in with other people's deer. You don't know how the other
- 1:00:56person treated that deer. If they left it in their truck
- 1:00:58bed for a little bit, you don't know about the meat.
- 1:01:01Is this my deer? Is this somebody else's deer?
- 1:01:03How did you? It's a whole thing, but when,
- 1:01:05when I we bring it home and do it ourselves, just in the
- 1:01:08garage, you see the deer, you see the whole process from start
- 1:01:12to finish. If I'm going to kill an animal
- 1:01:15for meat, I should be able to obviously want, you know, if I'm
- 1:01:19I feel like kill the animal, take care of it, but then see
- 1:01:23the whole process through and give respect to the animal and
- 1:01:26like give it the you know, I take care of the meat like it's
- 1:01:28gold. So we bring it home, we butcher
- 1:01:34it up. We take any of the fat, any of
- 1:01:36the tendons, any of this stuff, the gunk that you can get like
- 1:01:40in a lot of factory farming. I'm not a huge factory farming
- 1:01:43obviously fan. I do eat beef sometimes, like I
- 1:01:46wish I could just eat 100% grass fed beef all the all the time
- 1:01:50I've been on kicks where I do if I need beef or like a burger or
- 1:01:54whatever, I go out for a burger or something.
- 1:01:56But sometimes it's just not practical if you don't have
- 1:01:58oodles of money. But yeah, there's some stuff.
- 1:02:03In that meat that I just. Don't agree with in the in the
- 1:02:06things that they do. It's just they don't live in a
- 1:02:07good environment. But the meat of like a a deer in
- 1:02:10the wild. It lived a beautiful life in
- 1:02:14nature eating all all just natural foods.
- 1:02:17I clean it up so there's no gross stuff in it.
- 1:02:21It's just pure, beautiful, dark red, real, no fat meat and it's
- 1:02:29the best. And when you get a huge tub of
- 1:02:322040 sixty 80 lbs of just beautiful venison, it's just
- 1:02:38really rewarding. And then when I eat it all year
- 1:02:40round, it's it's super rewarding.
- 1:02:42So that's one thing. And a lot of people like I have
- 1:02:45try venison. You put some seasoning on it.
- 1:02:48Like I always have people just try ground venison to start, put
- 1:02:51some seasoning on it, put it in a Taco.
- 1:02:53They actually some people like it better because it doesn't
- 1:02:55have all that fatty gross stuff that that beef can have or other
- 1:02:59kind of meats can have. So don't knock until you try it.
- 1:03:04Yeah. And it's just, it's just really
- 1:03:06the good to meet. So that's, that's pretty much
- 1:03:07the process of what happens when you get a deer.
- 1:03:11And then the last thing I, I will talk about, which I think
- 1:03:14is important, the dedic and I've talked about this recently and
- 1:03:17I, I don't want to put a negative aspect on some hunters,
- 1:03:21like most hunters are, are awesome people.
- 1:03:23I love talking to them. There's just a small amount of
- 1:03:26people that you see beer cans in the woods.
- 1:03:29They're the way they talk about hunting.
- 1:03:33You just can't really mess with or I don't mess with.
- 1:03:38There are some people like that for sure, but the majority are
- 1:03:41not like that. And and for me, and this is kind
- 1:03:47of a thing, I thought about a. Lot when I got.
- 1:03:49Into running and I would I'm kind of like a person like that.
- 1:03:53I'm going to talk about now. I dedicate so much time and
- 1:03:57energy to running every single day, hours training, eating
- 1:04:01right, recovery, all of these things.
- 1:04:03And you can't even fathom with some, you know, how much some
- 1:04:06people train and dedicate and just like love getting out.
- 1:04:12There are hunters and woodsmen that spend that exact same
- 1:04:16amount of energy in the woods or, or on their hunting goals,
- 1:04:21which is is so insane to think about that if you, let's say you
- 1:04:25run for on average, you run for an hour or two every single day.
- 1:04:29There is a hunter that spends his time walking, scouting,
- 1:04:33looking for animals, trying to find animals for an hour or two
- 1:04:38every single day. Even if they have a full time
- 1:04:40job, even if whatever. There are people that will spend
- 1:04:43all of hunting season, dark to dark in the woods, hunting,
- 1:04:48doing, doing that stuff. And I just think it is so
- 1:04:54insane, those people. Are if you talk to.
- 1:04:59Them they talk about hunting like I talk about endurance
- 1:05:05training or or talk about training or ultra running.
- 1:05:09I'll listen to podcasts. I actually enjoy listening to a
- 1:05:11podcast where people will spend 2 hours talking about a certain
- 1:05:17situation. If you're hunting deer on a
- 1:05:20hillside with a Leeward wind with thick cover, how do those
- 1:05:26deer adjust when the wind switches?
- 1:05:29People will spend 2 hours talking about that theorizing.
- 1:05:34What have I seen? What have I, I noticed in all of
- 1:05:37my time in my years out there. It's like they talk about it
- 1:05:41like it's a science. The the greatest woodsmans are
- 1:05:45there's a Killian Jornay of woodsmen where they walk into a
- 1:05:50woods and they know what kind of animal animals have been there,
- 1:05:54what kind of things have happened.
- 1:05:55Like to an extent that I actually, I couldn't even tell
- 1:05:58you guys and those people I think are some.
- 1:06:01Of the coolest. People out there because it's
- 1:06:04it's it is so insane and I think.
- 1:06:08You know, a lot of like the. Podcasting and videos, there's a
- 1:06:10lot of videos now out there, so you can't listen to these
- 1:06:12people, but I think the dedication of hunting and
- 1:06:16woodsmanship is something that that at least.
- 1:06:22Know is out there. And, and appreciate if you ever
- 1:06:25meet somebody who, who, who is like that.
- 1:06:27And for me, I think I've realized in life you only get
- 1:06:32maybe a, a few things that you can become a master in.
- 1:06:36And I think I've chosen, I want that to be mountain running,
- 1:06:40ultra running. And then I think when I turn
- 1:06:43maybe 4010 years from now, a dozen years from now, I would
- 1:06:47like to just spend all of my time in the woods and see what I
- 1:06:50can learn about creatures in the habitat and try to become a
- 1:06:55master woodsman. But I, I literally realize that
- 1:06:58I cannot do that right now while I'm training how I'm training
- 1:07:03because it takes so much time and dedication that I just don't
- 1:07:07have available. So it's kind of cool.
- 1:07:11I wanted to give that a shout out to all the the dedicated
- 1:07:15hunters and woodsman. And the last note that I do have
- 1:07:18is, and I said this kind of like about bow hunting and I said
- 1:07:21about, you know, being out there with other hunters in the woods.
- 1:07:28If you see a hunter in the woods, especially if they have a
- 1:07:32bow, because bow hunting is so hard, most people fail at it.
- 1:07:35A lot of people don't succeed. And if someone is bow hunting,
- 1:07:39they're either wicked smart and really good hunters or they just
- 1:07:43love getting out in the woods. If you see a hunter, even with a
- 1:07:47gun and you're comfortable with it or a bow, go and talk to
- 1:07:50them. Ask them, Oh, did you see
- 1:07:52anything? How's how's your season going?
- 1:07:55Have you seen anything? And they will probably tell you
- 1:07:57stories that will open your eyes and be like, wow, this isn't
- 1:08:01this person is not just like a murderer.
- 1:08:04This person is. They know the woods almost like
- 1:08:07I know X trails or I know X mountains.
- 1:08:11And they'll tell you things that they didn't that, that, that you
- 1:08:14did not know. So if you see somebody strike up
- 1:08:17a conversation, a hunter in the woods, say hi, make them feel
- 1:08:21good. Because when I, when I talk to
- 1:08:23someone, I always try to talk to somebody.
- 1:08:25When someone's like, oh, cool. And they asked me about it, it's
- 1:08:28like a huge relief off my shoulders.
- 1:08:31And I'll tell them what I know. And I think it's just, yeah,
- 1:08:35hunters and and and trail runners and hikers should,
- 1:08:38should conversate more because they have a lot more in common
- 1:08:42than you think that they would. And so that, yeah, that was
- 1:08:48kind. Of my some, some of the.
- 1:08:49Hunting stuff, some things that I want to get out.
- 1:08:51I wanted to get out there. I could do another thing.
- 1:08:54I kind of want to talk about where your dear live, but maybe
- 1:08:57that's for another podcast, because that's a whole nother
- 1:09:00thing. Like I could talk about a lot of
- 1:09:01the the hunting stuff for a long time, but I think we're going to
- 1:09:04cut it there today. Thanks for for tuning in episode
- 1:09:1020. I'm excited.
- 1:09:11Like I said, we got another guest coming on soon.
- 1:09:14I hope I I'm in the guests are in the works.
- 1:09:18More content is in the works is the middle of winter, but I'm
- 1:09:22still coming at you. I'm still in the truck bed
- 1:09:25braving it out and we'll we're still doing it.
- 1:09:29So if you get out this weekend, stay warm.
- 1:09:32If not, grind indoors. RIP the podcast.
- 1:09:35We'll plug at the end. Hopefully you RIP the podcast.
- 1:09:37If you listen to this on treadmill or something, you just
- 1:09:39finished an indoor workout. Hats off.
- 1:09:43Like thank you for listening. Nice.
- 1:09:45You got after on the dreadmill and yeah, that's all I got for
- 1:09:49you guys. We'll see you next week.
- 1:09:52Peace. Aside from being able.
- 1:10:08To recover more. Oops, sorry.
- 1:10:13This might. This might.
- 1:10:14Be a a double take cut where we that I actually have to cut out
- 1:10:18what am I trying to say aside from yeah aside honestly, this
- 1:10:25would be funny to kind of believe in.
- 1:10:26I put a, I'm not going to say anything.
- 1:10:28I I want to start putting bloopers in at the end of these
- 1:10:31podcast potentially. This is not what I want.
- 1:10:42Bookcase. Here we go.
- 1:10:44OK.
