- 0:00This is kind of like a tour of the life of Christ.
- 0:03I have been convinced, thoroughly convinced, that it is
- 0:06theologically the most profound spiritual prayer for any
- 0:10Christian, not just for a Catholic that exists.
- 0:13This idea of having these beads strong on rope, can you tell us
- 0:18the history of what how this originated?
- 0:20And many people don't pray the rosary well.
- 0:23The most important part of mental prayer or meditation is
- 0:28to speak to Christ in that scene.
- 0:31What was that room like, that room when Mary received this
- 0:35message and she said yes to the Angel, yes to God, we're asking
- 0:39to share in the incarnation, yes to what you're saying.
- 0:42Because goosebumps. It is at the invocation of the
- 0:45Angel Gabriel, when he says to the Virgin Mary, Hail full of
- 0:48grace, where Mary says Thy will be done.
- 0:50Let it be done to me according to thy word.
- 0:52All of salvation history changes.
- 0:56Gabe Castillo, welcome to the podcast.
- 0:57Lila, thanks for having me. It's an honor to be on your
- 1:00program. I consider you one of the best,
- 1:02not only podcasters, but best female speakers in the Christian
- 1:06space, and I want to thank you for doing such a good job of
- 1:09representing the pro-life movement in circumstances that
- 1:12are hostile. You've done beautifully.
- 1:14You're an example of grace and truth and goodness.
- 1:17So it's an honor to be here, seriously.
- 1:19Thank you, Gabe. That's that's very kind.
- 1:21It's pumped me up right up, right up.
- 1:23Again, I love it. Thank you.
- 1:25Well, I'm a big fan of what you're doing and how you're
- 1:28using media. You've got a YouTube channel,
- 1:30you've got an incredible story. You've got some, I'm going to
- 1:33call it, campaigns that you're running, Let's call it that.
- 1:36So a lot to unpack here. But first of all, who is Gabe
- 1:40Castillo? I'm actually just figuring this
- 1:44out now. So I grew up without a father,
- 1:47and I didn't realize until recently how deeply that
- 1:51impacted me. I grew up also without God,
- 1:54which is a major downside. But then I didn't realize how
- 1:58not having a father also impacted not having a
- 2:02relationship with God. Because if you don't know about
- 2:04God, at least you have a mother and a father who are kind of
- 2:07like an image of the Trinity for you.
- 2:09And so I'm just now discovering not only how deeply wounded I
- 2:14have been by not having a father in my life, but then because I'm
- 2:18like aware of this hole in my life, I really started looking
- 2:22into the role of fatherhood, especially from the teachings of
- 2:25Pope John Paul the 2nd and from the writings of Saint Paul.
- 2:29I'm realizing that there's people with father wounds who
- 2:32had fathers and they weren't living up to the revelation of
- 2:38God the Father that all men are created to do.
- 2:42And it's I think especially of that scripture verse where Saint
- 2:46Paul says, husbands love your wives like Christ loved the
- 2:48church and handed himself over. 4 I always forget this last
- 2:52part. At least I did until recently
- 2:53for her sanctification. And so Jesus is asking men to
- 2:58sacrifice for their spouses and to pray for their spouses and to
- 3:01offer Masses for their spouses and to pray the rosary for their
- 3:03spouses to become Saints. And so I have not seen that in
- 3:08very many couples and in families.
- 3:10And so I think that people are more deeply wounded by a lack of
- 3:15fatherhood than maybe they realize even.
- 3:18What does that look like when you say like I'm saying who?
- 3:20Gabe Castillo, he said, well, I'm figuring it out and I father
- 3:23wounds. OK, What is what is that?
- 3:25What does that look like for you?
- 3:26So my wounds are seeing that I'm trying to prove myself and I'm
- 3:31not knowing where this drive to try and prove myself is coming
- 3:34from that realizing that because I, I'm like, why do I do the
- 3:40things that I do? It's from not having a father
- 3:41growing up and then just learning to love my wife and the
- 3:44sacrifice for her and to pray for her to become a St. and to
- 3:47grow in holiness and to offer. So now I got, I'm very
- 3:49intentional about every mass at the consecration.
- 3:52I'm praying for my wife to become a St. to go straight to
- 3:54heaven at the hour of her death. And I pray at least one rosary
- 3:58for my wife specifically every single day.
- 4:01So it's beginning to define who I am.
- 4:04But it really defined who I was when I was in high school.
- 4:07Because not having God and not having a father to love my mom,
- 4:12I was very confused about my meaning in life, my purpose, and
- 4:17about sexuality. So I was trying to find meaning
- 4:19and purpose from anywhere that I could.
- 4:21And I was a latch key child, so my mom was working 2 jobs to try
- 4:25and make ends meet, which is one of the effects of not having a
- 4:28father in the home. And I was gaining my identity
- 4:31from MTV, which at the time was just like there was a show
- 4:35called Sex in the 90s, which was like so perverse, like so
- 4:39perverse. And I accepted that as my
- 4:43identity and my goal in life. And so I got, how old were you?
- 4:46I was like 10th grade, 9th grade.
- 4:48I was exposed to pornography in the eighth grade, but I didn't,
- 4:51I wasn't like I didn't go towards it.
- 4:54But then once I started hearing these programs say, you know,
- 4:57sex with yourself and all sorts of other perversions, I was
- 5:02like, well, pornography, that's great, that's moral, that's
- 5:04fine. And so I got addicted to it very
- 5:07strongly, very heavily. But the saving grace was that my
- 5:11mom, although she didn't have God in her life and we didn't
- 5:13have a father, she had a lot of practical wisdom and she was
- 5:16very strict. So I didn't go off the rails as
- 5:19badly as I could have. And my grades were really,
- 5:23really good. So I graduated in the top 1% of
- 5:25my high school. And so I got essentially a full
- 5:28scholarship to the University of Saint Thomas, which is a very
- 5:32good private Catholic school in Houston.
- 5:34And I was forced to take core classes in philosophy and in
- 5:39theology, and I had zero religious formation.
- 5:44Zero. I made my first communion in the
- 5:46eighth grade. I don't even know how that
- 5:48happened, like they just gave me communion.
- 5:51Would you go to Mass on Sundays? Growing up?
- 5:52Definitely no. But you But your mom was
- 5:54Catholic, but it wasn't. Like culturally Catholic,
- 5:57basically she just prayed the Saint Jude novena whenever she
- 5:59needed something. So she had she had left the
- 6:02church for a long time and she says, I don't know, I wasn't
- 6:05around. But I take her word for it that
- 6:07the priest didn't want to baptize me because she wasn't
- 6:10married. And so because of that, that
- 6:13hurt her deeply. And that rejection from the
- 6:16church made her in return reject the church.
- 6:19And so there may have been more than that.
- 6:22I don't know. It feels like there might be.
- 6:24Were you baptized? I was baptized, Yeah, I was
- 6:26baptized and I made my first communion when I was in the. 8th
- 6:28Because that's not the Church's teaching.
- 6:30Right. I agree.
- 6:30Yeah, no, I know. Yeah, I tried to explain that
- 6:32that. Priest was that Priest was
- 6:34confused. Yeah, he was very confused.
- 6:35So so were you. You were baptized as a newborn.
- 6:38So I was baptized as a newborn and then just basically stayed
- 6:41away from church until my grandmother died and it was her
- 6:44dying wish that I made my first communion.
- 6:46So I made my first communion and that was it.
- 6:48We never went back to church. And only child.
- 6:51Only child, single parent, yes. So it was like, and then there's
- 6:54disorder that's involved in that as well, because usually a
- 6:57mother and a father give each other attention and there was no
- 7:02father for her to give attention to.
- 7:03So I became like the center of her world, which was a little
- 7:06bit disordered in a way. So there's just so much disorder
- 7:09going on, but being accepted into the University of Saint
- 7:13Thomas and taking the philosophy of the human person and intro to
- 7:17Catholicism, I began to see that the Catholic Church, and this is
- 7:22a great consolation for anybody who's considering being Catholic
- 7:25or is questioning their faith. The Catholic Church objectively,
- 7:29like you can look at it historically, you can look at it
- 7:31scripturally, you can look at it theologically with an open mind
- 7:34if you're searching. And it just makes so much sense.
- 7:38And it made sense of especially what really struck me was
- 7:41concupiscence. So my mom and I, we loved each
- 7:45other. We were the only people that we
- 7:46had in each other's lives to depend on.
- 7:48But we were constantly fighting and like ugly fights where we'd
- 7:51curse each other and like just say things that no parent should
- 7:53say to a child and a child should say to a parent.
- 7:57And I didn't want to hurt her. And I was, and the Church made
- 8:02sense to me, like, well, you have a disordered inclination to
- 8:04do bad things. We call that concupiscence,
- 8:07pride of life, the concupiscence of the eyes, concupiscence of
- 8:11the flesh. Like this makes so much.
- 8:14Sense was that the first time you had really understood that.
- 8:16That class of. College.
- 8:17I've never heard any of this stuff like I had to take.
- 8:21They had the core requirement of intro to Sacred Scripture.
- 8:23I took it three times because I failed the first two times
- 8:27because I had no idea who these people were, who the apostles
- 8:30were like, and I'm a, I'm a youth minister full time now.
- 8:34And that's the same thing. I'll get high school students
- 8:37coming into my youth program and they won't know what a St. is.
- 8:41They won't know who Jesus was. Like they know he's an important
- 8:43person. They don't know that he had 12
- 8:45apostles they don't know anything about.
- 8:48So it's like I was basically experiencing what I now realize
- 8:52is the overwhelming majority of Catholics, but I was so
- 8:56convicted intellectually of Catholicism that I was like,
- 9:00this is the truth. But I viewed the truth as a
- 9:04philosophy. It wasn't a relationship with
- 9:07Jesus Christ. I was still hooked on
- 9:10pornography. I was trying to hook up with
- 9:11every single girl that I could find or that would accept me.
- 9:16For some reason, a lot of them realized that I was, you know, a
- 9:19dirtbag at the time, but a religious sister gave me a brown
- 9:24scapular. And maybe we'll talk about it
- 9:27later. And looking back, I realized
- 9:30that that was a turning point where grace slowly began to
- 9:34enter into my heart. And shortly after that, a lot of
- 9:37my friends who I was drinking with and partying with on not
- 9:42only on the weekends, but every day of the week, they were going
- 9:45to receive the sacrament of confirmation.
- 9:47And so I thought to myself, I'm convicted of this stuff
- 9:50philosophically, and they're just as bad as I am, so why
- 9:54can't I also receive the sacrament of confirmation?
- 9:57And part of that process was going on a retreat.
- 10:00And on this particular night of the retreat, they said, we're
- 10:04going to go and have Eucharistic adoration.
- 10:07And I was like, OK, cool. What's that?
- 10:09You're going to go look at Jesus and you're going to pray to him.
- 10:11And I was like, what do you mean?
- 10:13I'm going to look at Jesus? Like, I understood praying to
- 10:15Jesus, but what am I going to look at him?
- 10:17Like, we're going to look at pictures of Jesus and they're
- 10:20like, no, in the Eucharist. I was like, again, what are you
- 10:23talking about? Well, we believe that that
- 10:25little white circle is Jesus Christ.
- 10:27I was like, really? Yeah.
- 10:29We. I was like, Are you sure?
- 10:32The real Jesus Like, yeah, we believe that.
- 10:34I was like, so can you tell me what exactly is going to happen
- 10:37in this Chapel that we're going to?
- 10:40Can you give me some instructions?
- 10:41And this was my philosophy teacher at the time, so I really
- 10:44trusted him. He's a great professor, Doctor
- 10:46Ted Rebart. And he says, look, just go in
- 10:49there, kneel down and repeat the name of Jesus.
- 10:51And I was like for an hour. He's like, well, you don't have
- 10:55to do the whole hour. So I went in, I knelt down for
- 10:58about 10 minutes. I was just looking at the
- 11:00Eucharist and repeating the name of Jesus in my mind.
- 11:02And I was just like, OK, this is really dumb.
- 11:05Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. And then 10 minutes passes and I
- 11:10hear an internal voice say, my son, be quiet.
- 11:13And of course, like, I was like, OK, I'm starting to go crazy.
- 11:17I'm just looking at the circle for too long.
- 11:19And then I just kept repeating the name of Jesus for a couple
- 11:21more minutes and then all of a sudden it wasn't audible.
- 11:25But I've heard the same thing, my son, I love you.
- 11:29Be quiet. But at the same time that I
- 11:32heard it, it was as if God put his finger into my soul and
- 11:37melted my icy heart and I just crumbled interiorly.
- 11:42And as my heart melted, my face melted and like tears were just
- 11:46streaming down my face and I was like crying.
- 11:49The deepest SOB, the ugliest cry and looking back on it, it's
- 11:55like as if every wound that I'd ever experienced to my life was
- 11:58like ripped open and I was having interior mental pictures
- 12:03of the passion of Christ. I had the movie hadn't come out
- 12:06yet, so I didn't have this like idea that Jesus suffered and
- 12:09died and, you know, experienced extreme torment.
- 12:12But these images were in my mind and I just knew one God loved me
- 12:18into this was really, really, really, truly, substantially.
- 12:24This was really the person of Jesus Christ, the same person
- 12:27who walked this earth 2000 years ago.
- 12:29And afterwards my friends were like, are you OK?
- 12:32Is everything going on? And I was not OK.
- 12:34I was like, that is Jesus Christ like, yeah, we know.
- 12:37I was like, no, you don't know. That is really, really, really
- 12:41Jesus. And I have to live like, that's
- 12:43really Jesus. Like I have to change my life.
- 12:46And so I did. It became second nature for me
- 12:49every single day to visit Jesus in the Chapel, as if he was
- 12:53really and truly present. And my life, if my friends
- 12:57didn't know where I was at, if I was not where I normally am,
- 13:00they would be like, he's in the Chapel.
- 13:01He's always in the Chapel. And I had a girlfriend at the
- 13:04time and we weren't living a pure Christian life.
- 13:08And I was even ready to break up with her because I asked her.
- 13:11I was like, do you love Jesus in the Eucharist?
- 13:12And she's like, of course I do. And I said, well, then why don't
- 13:15you ever visit him? Why aren't you?
- 13:17Why don't you go to Mass? Because I was going to daily
- 13:19Mass, but at the same time I was living in mortal sin and not
- 13:23trying to stop. Did you know that?
- 13:25What that even was mortal sin? I I just knew I was doing bad
- 13:28things that I wasn't living the life that God had called me to
- 13:32my, again, my morality was very perverse.
- 13:34I was actually reflecting this morning on how perverse it was
- 13:37that I had had the idea to donate sperm to make money.
- 13:41And one of the kids in campus ministry, like I was like
- 13:43telling him this. I was like, dude, I got a great
- 13:45idea to make money and he's like, are you crazy?
- 13:48And I was like, what's wrong with it?
- 13:49It's a great idea. And he's like, that's so
- 13:51immoral. And I was like, how is that?
- 13:53Like, I had no idea. Like my morality was so skewed.
- 13:58So donate sperm meaning for like a sperm bank.
- 14:00Yeah, I didn't know. I didn't know this.
- 14:02I didn't know the business side of it about that.
- 14:04I heard that you can make money doing that.
- 14:05So my morality was way off track.
- 14:08But at the same time, I was going to the Chapel every single
- 14:11day, praying, going to Mass every single day.
- 14:14I volunteered to become a Eucharistic minister.
- 14:16And at the time, I saw my peers who were in campus ministry
- 14:19because I was hanging, hanging out in campus ministry at the
- 14:21time, I saw them as like, you know, Bible beaters, you know,
- 14:25holy rollers. I was like very pessimistic
- 14:28about them. But now I look back, I'm like,
- 14:30man, thank goodness that they were so convicted of their faith
- 14:34that one, they're willing to call me out.
- 14:36And they even got the campus minister involved, who is a
- 14:40religious sister, a great religious sister who I love from
- 14:42the depths of my but. Call you out because like
- 14:44obviously the sperm donation thing, it would be a.
- 14:46Because I was living like a duplicitous life.
- 14:48So you would be going and going to receive Holy Communion going
- 14:51to mass like this Catholic guy? And distributing Holy Communion
- 14:55at Mass. And doing sperm donations.
- 14:57But I didn't actually do that, but like, all right, but going
- 15:00to parties, drinking, OK, trying to hook up.
- 15:03And they were on too. And they're like, who is this
- 15:05guy? What is he doing?
- 15:06Did you know when you would go to receive Holy Communion that
- 15:08you weren't allowed to technically because of being
- 15:10immortal? I I there was a disconnect.
- 15:12It didn't. It didn't.
- 15:13There was a disconnect. It did not click.
- 15:15I'm so excited to introduce a must listen, extremely vengeable
- 15:19new podcast brought to you by Coronation Media.
- 15:22The podcast is called Firebreaker and is a fictional
- 15:25rendition of the story of Saint George and the Dragon.
- 15:28It was created by fathers to introduce strong Christian
- 15:31heroes for their boys and girls to look up to.
- 15:34And let's be honest, we're living in a time where there
- 15:36isn't an emphasis on moral character of strong male
- 15:39characters for young boys in media.
- 15:41The Princess 2IN Firebreakers is a model of Christian virtue,
- 15:44just like what I'd hope my daughter to grow up to be like.
- 15:47Firebreakers is done an old school radio style with sound
- 15:50effects and is guaranteed to engage your kids.
- 15:52The portrayal of Dragons as captivating symbols of evil is
- 15:56masterfully executed. It's kind of like spiritual
- 15:59warfare training for your kids. Plus, the podcast features
- 16:01captivating voice performances, including Wizards of Waverly
- 16:04play Star David Henry and The Chosen's Elizabeth Tabish, whose
- 16:08plays Mary Magdalene, as well as a full orchestra score by a
- 16:12Hollywood producer, Kevin Kaska. The podcast Firebreakers is
- 16:15available available on Apple and Spotify for free, so go download
- 16:19it right now or visit firebreakerseries.com.
- 16:22That's Firebreaker series.com. It just didn't.
- 16:25It didn't click. It was a disconnect.
- 16:26It did not click. But the campus minister, we were
- 16:30having a meeting about Lent and what we were going to give up
- 16:33for Lent. And I was still so oblivious.
- 16:37I was like, for Lent, I'm going to give up chocolate.
- 16:39And then she was like, no, like, no, you have to give up sin.
- 16:43Like you have to stop. Like what's wrong with you and
- 16:47so? What did you when people would,
- 16:49when these people thank God for them, they were so direct with
- 16:51you. What?
- 16:51What? How did what were you offended?
- 16:53How did you feel? I was like kind of confused.
- 16:55I was like, oh, I didn't know that I was, I was I it was like
- 16:58a mental I was like, I can't explain it.
- 17:02I don't I it just it didn't offend me when the sister was
- 17:05like, what's wrong with you? Like I was like, wow, it's a
- 17:07good idea. So I mean, it sounds like it's
- 17:09your conscience wasn't formed, you didn't.
- 17:12Have the understanding. Which by the way, I know I
- 17:14mentioned mortal sin just a moment ago.
- 17:17For the soul to be in the state of mortal sin, they have to have
- 17:20full knowledge as well as full consent.
- 17:22Sounds like you didn't have full knowledge that what you were
- 17:24doing was. At some point it doesn't
- 17:26dislike. I knew that what I was doing was
- 17:28bad and I was doing it anyways, but I think I might have
- 17:31destroyed my conscience, especially concerning sins of
- 17:35the flesh. And that day after the sister
- 17:39confronted me and was like, dude, you need to like, you
- 17:41cannot be living this life like people are reporting certain
- 17:45things. And I went home.
- 17:48I was like, you know what? I'm never going to look at
- 17:49pornography again. And I'm not going to commit a
- 17:51solitary sin like masturbation in that case.
- 17:54And within 30 minutes, I fell back into mortal sin.
- 17:57Like at that moment I broke down crying because one, I think God
- 18:02gave me the grace of true contrition and I realized I have
- 18:06a problem. Like I did not want to do this.
- 18:08And when I was crying and I was expressing my sorrow to God
- 18:13because I, I loved God, I was visiting him.
- 18:14I was spending my time with him. I recognized my wickedness and
- 18:19I, I verbally was praying. I said, Lord, I'm so sorry,
- 18:21please forgive me. I have a problem.
- 18:23I heard audibly of a very high pitched screeching ugly voice
- 18:29that I can't even I couldn't even try to replicate it with my
- 18:32own human voice in my ears. Audibly I heard the exact same
- 18:37words that I was praying to God but in a mocking voice and I
- 18:42don't know what got into me, the Holy Spirit or my guardian
- 18:45Angel. Something prompted me, and I
- 18:47immediately said, St. John Vianney, pray for me.
- 18:51Did you know who that was? I don't think so.
- 18:53Maybe I'd heard his name before, but I only learned later that he
- 18:57had been somebody who fought with the devil and was getting
- 19:00attacked by him. And immediately when I said
- 19:02those words, that voice went away.
- 19:05So the next day, I went to campus ministry.
- 19:07I didn't tell the sister what had happened, but I think she
- 19:11knew that something had gotten into me.
- 19:12And I said, is can I get a pamphlet on the rosary?
- 19:14And I need a rosary. And I took it home because I was
- 19:17afraid, because the last time I went to bed, I had heard a scary
- 19:20voice. So on my bed, I opened the
- 19:23pamphlet and I began to see, OK, well, how do you pray this
- 19:26thing? I believe in the moment that I
- 19:28said I believe a force physically grabbed me, pinned me
- 19:31on my bed, held me down by my shoulders and was choking me.
- 19:36So I can't, I don't even know. I didn't know how to even
- 19:40process that other than to scream for my mom to help me and
- 19:44I couldn't get words out. I was like.
- 19:47We were 21. How?
- 19:48Old I was about probably 2021 yeah I heard of interior voice
- 19:53tell me to pray and I and then I heard an interior voice but it
- 19:57was this was like in my mind so I believe this was my guardian
- 19:59Angel and said pray the Hail Mary and.
- 20:02Do it interiorly, like it wasn't like I heard with my ears.
- 20:05I just understood. And so I began to pray the Hail
- 20:07Mary in my mind and I felt a little bit of a release.
- 20:11And then I was finally able to like, I felt like a, like my, my
- 20:14throat was being like let go of. And so I got the words out Mary.
- 20:20And when I got the name of Mary out, everything went totally
- 20:23back to normal. Force went away.
- 20:25And that was probably one of the greatest, most greatest
- 20:29blessings I could have received from God because I knew for a
- 20:34fact that I, when I had a problem, and my problem was a
- 20:37spiritual problem, that all of this stuff about demons and hell
- 20:41and all of that stuff is real. And the power of the Virgin Mary
- 20:45is immeasurably real because I was living in mortal sin, taking
- 20:51communion unworthily. I was a bad person.
- 20:54And I called upon her name, and she helped me regardless of how
- 20:58wretched I was. And afterwards, because I was so
- 21:02confused and scared, I just went online and I was like typing in
- 21:05everything that had happened. And I came across a website that
- 21:08was immensely helpful. That doesn't exist anymore, but
- 21:11you can find the remnants of it called the Padre Pio Center for
- 21:14Deliverance. And on the website they had,
- 21:17they listed it, they called them hooks, Little intrinsically bad
- 21:24things that the devil will use to infiltrate a person.
- 21:27And the hooks were pornography, artificial contraception, rated
- 21:32R movies, all sorts of stuff. And I had most of the things on
- 21:37the checklist. We had father Carlos Martins on
- 21:40the show a couple months ago. He and I are good buddies.
- 21:42You know him, but they was talking about that.
- 21:45He's like, well, what are the danger zones for just your
- 21:48everyday person that can welcome in the demonic without even
- 21:51intending to? And he was saying honestly,
- 21:53besides witchcraft or Wicca or whatever that world occult
- 21:56stuff, it's sexual sin. And that's what we're totally
- 22:00swimming in in our culture. It's like sexual sin is not just
- 22:03something that happens. It's almost expected of people
- 22:06as a normal thing to do. Like you're supposed to be
- 22:08having sex outside of marriage. That's normal.
- 22:11And so of course, there's a lot of, I think, demonic oppression.
- 22:15And and now like you say that people aren't even ashamed of
- 22:18it. And before you'd like, if you
- 22:20looked at pornography, people, your friends would be like,
- 22:22what's wrong with you? But now they're like sharing it
- 22:24with each other and it's just not.
- 22:26Our culture is so backwards when it comes to purity in God's plan
- 22:30for sex and marriage. So after that incredible
- 22:32encounter where you experience the power of asking for Mary's
- 22:36house when you're getting attacked by a demon, it sounds
- 22:39like, I mean, it's incredible. What did your conversion process
- 22:43look like to get out of that lifestyle and those habits?
- 22:46Because I mean, we've, we've have talked about sexual
- 22:48addiction on the show. And I don't know if that's
- 22:49something that you were dealing with directly, but you know,
- 22:52sometimes there's. Both.
- 22:53I think it was spiritual and a physical addiction.
- 22:56And so immediately I got rid of all of those, like that night I
- 22:59got rid of everything I could. And then the next day my mom
- 23:03went to work and I got rid of all the bad things that she had.
- 23:06She had a lot of New Age books and Buddhist statues and things
- 23:09that were of false gods. And I just destroyed them all.
- 23:14And in my house, I started putting up a bunch of holy
- 23:17pictures and putting holy music and I would have EWTN's audio
- 23:21library going even when I wasn't home.
- 23:23Thank you. EWTN.
- 23:24Yes I had EWTN audio like the lives.
- 23:26Of the same. Mother Angelica, Bob and Penny
- 23:29Lord all my computer playing non-stop so.
- 23:33Does your mother know you were doing this while she was at
- 23:34work? Doing what?
- 23:36Throwing away Oliver's. She didn't know.
- 23:37She found out and she was not happy because I went overboard.
- 23:41She had a lot of elephants in the house and she just liked
- 23:43elephants, but I thought she had too many elephants.
- 23:46Oh my God, I was like, this is superstitious why we got so many
- 23:49elephants in? Oh my gosh.
- 23:50Yeah, so it was it was it was over.
- 23:53It was over the top. I, I overreacted, but I cleansed
- 23:57the house and then I went through the process of starting
- 24:02to pray the rosary and going to confession a lot when especially
- 24:07when I first had like this realization that I am, I'm a
- 24:11mess and I'm a slave to my passions and maybe even to
- 24:15diabolical obsessions. I, you know, so sometimes I had
- 24:19to go to confession like the next day.
- 24:21But with prayer, with receiving the sacrament of confession, it
- 24:27gives you the grace to overcome that Slowly you begin to sin
- 24:30less and less and less, provided you don't quit.
- 24:33And I noticed that when I prayed the rosary specifically, I had a
- 24:37strength. I would still be tempted, but I
- 24:39wasn't tempted as strongly. And I began to pray sometimes 3
- 24:45rosaries, 4 rosaries I didn't have like a rule.
- 24:48I didn't say I'm doing this every single day.
- 24:50I just noticed it when I prayed more, the temptation was less
- 24:54and I still had the habit of going to the Chapel.
- 24:57So now as I'm going to the Chapel and I'm praying the
- 25:00rosary, I begin to, yes, sin last, but I also begin to hear
- 25:05the voice of God. Not like audibly where you'd
- 25:07say, oh, he's a Mystic or something, but just like the way
- 25:09God speaks in the depths of your heart about what he wanted me to
- 25:12do with my life. I felt like he was calling to me
- 25:15to go into religious education, to give back, to teach middle
- 25:19schoolers, to teach high school religion, to try and maybe help
- 25:23other young people to avoid the pitfalls that I had fallen into.
- 25:28And this was all in college. Is all in college, yeah.
- 25:30So I have a question about this because I and it and I'm, I'm
- 25:34going to guess the people listening, there are people that
- 25:37they know. I mean, I think all of us know
- 25:39someone who has struggled with a sex addiction.
- 25:42It is everywhere, people, maybe even people listening.
- 25:44I would say the overwhelming majority of people have a sexual
- 25:47addiction. It's, it's crazy, right?
- 25:49And our culture is basically designed to give people this
- 25:51addiction because it exposes sexual, you know, porno material
- 25:54to kids at a young age And and then, you know, the whole thing
- 25:57happens. So and then you're in school,
- 25:59you know, you literally have Planned Parenthood, who runs
- 26:01school curriculum on sex and sex Ed and it's basically you should
- 26:05masturbate. I mean you should self.
- 26:08Abuse. You're not You're not healthy
- 26:09unless you. Do yeah, it's so it's really
- 26:11dark. I am curious your thoughts on
- 26:13this because you know we're we have we work we like covenant
- 26:17eyes as an example is one of our sponsors.
- 26:19And so shout out to covenant eyes, but different ways to deal
- 26:22with, you know, sexual addiction temptation, all of this stuff.
- 26:26But I have heard it said that these things can also be over
- 26:30spiritualized in the sense that we have to work within the
- 26:32natural order. And if there really is a
- 26:34compulsion when it comes to sexual addiction of some kind,
- 26:39it is not just a spiritual problem.
- 26:41It's a sort of like, you know, psychological and physical
- 26:44problem. In addition.
- 26:45I don't know if you have any take on that and and advice for
- 26:48people because I think some people are like, I'm praying,
- 26:51I'm trying to pray it away, but I'm struggling.
- 26:54And you know, we have to use natural means as well as the
- 26:57supernatural means. Yeah, it's, I really believe
- 27:01it's both. And.
- 27:02And so when I say that the rosary gave me a strength, I
- 27:05believe that it was also because I was getting spiritual attacks.
- 27:09So I had a natural addiction because they're the dopamine and
- 27:13the oxytocin that comes when you have sexual climax.
- 27:17So I had that and I needed to implement practical tips.
- 27:22But then I also believed that I was having spiritual attacks
- 27:25because of the things that I'd open myself up to.
- 27:28And for people who are struggling with impurity, I have
- 27:32found, and this comes just when you go to confession and you
- 27:35make an examination of your conscience and you look at where
- 27:38you fell. Usually you weren't just walking
- 27:42and then you start looking at pornography.
- 27:43Usually there is a succession of little steps that lead up to it.
- 27:47You, you take a second glance at somebody who's dressed
- 27:50immodestly. Then you go on YouTube and you
- 27:53look up something that has that you know is going to excite you.
- 27:56And then you take it to the next step.
- 27:58And then you go and look at pornography.
- 28:00And what I found in addition to praying, but especially
- 28:03beneficial to me was to begin to confess or to examine where I
- 28:08started to go astray to how often was I looking at taking a
- 28:13second glance at a person. And when you start to examine
- 28:16that and you keep it close to your heart, you don't, you don't
- 28:20go as far because you're correcting yourself earlier.
- 28:24It's not, it's definitely not all spiritual and it's
- 28:26definitely not all practical. It's a both and it's a whole
- 28:28person that needs to be worked on.
- 28:31But Our Lady will help. I I've found and we can get
- 28:35there in a moment, but I have found because I do, I'm a high
- 28:37school youth minister and most of my teens come to me, I would
- 28:42say most with no religious education whatsoever and
- 28:46addictions because they grew up in the world and they have
- 28:49access to pornography. And that's one of the main
- 28:52reasons I think why pornography addiction is so prevalent is
- 28:55because if you even get tempted, you had like even in the heat of
- 28:59a moment, you have access to it on your phone and nobody's going
- 29:02to know. It can be your little hidden
- 29:04thing and you can live a duplicitous life.
- 29:06But I have found in young people who take up the rosary is kind
- 29:10of like a way of life that they they overcome it.
- 29:15They might be struggling frequently and then slowly after
- 29:20a month or two, they're falling into mortal sin is less and less
- 29:25into the point where they are now evangelizing their peers and
- 29:29trying to help them and get them through this.
- 29:31As I began to pray more and hear the voice of God and prayer
- 29:34more, I went into Catholic education.
- 29:37And this was around the time where Steve Jobs was introducing
- 29:41the first iPhone. I love Steve Jobs.
- 29:42He's a very inspiring person to me, even though he lived a
- 29:44morally questionable life. And I began to notice in my
- 29:48students that as they get iPhones and there's social media
- 29:53and, you know, web browsers, now they have access to it.
- 29:56They don't have the tools and they weren't responding to me as
- 30:01a teacher, as a teacher of religion.
- 30:02They weren't praying more. They weren't changing their
- 30:05behavior. They were still, some of them
- 30:07were bullying still. I realized that I was an
- 30:10ineffective teacher. I was failing at what I thought
- 30:13God was calling me part. Because of the iPhone.
- 30:16No, just because they are corrupt children.
- 30:18They are corrupt, OK, They are good.
- 30:20Kids in a kind of But they were. It was tough.
- 30:23You're saying they were not listening?
- 30:24They were not listening, and I think every parent can kind of
- 30:26relate to that when you're trying to get your kid to like,

- 31:38That's we Heart nutrition.com. These are high school.
- 31:41These are middle. Schoolers.
- 31:42Middle. Schoolers, I got a job teaching
- 31:43middle school. So what did you do?
- 31:44So it was all God's Providence. I had been invited on a retreat
- 31:50and it was to see some, this priest who was leading it was
- 31:54claimed to have had special gifts from the Holy Spirit to
- 31:58read souls and could be able to just, he, he was supposed to be
- 32:04a very holy priest. And so I went on this retreat
- 32:07and he was encouraging everybody at the retreat to make a general
- 32:10confession, which is a confession of sins, of all of
- 32:14the grave evils that you've ever committed your entire life.
- 32:17He was and, and people should know you don't make a general
- 32:20confession Willy nilly or frequently.
- 32:22It's maybe like a once or twice in your lifetime type of thing.
- 32:25And the benefits of it is to see how God's mercy has penetrated
- 32:30your life and to be thankful for what God has done in your life.
- 32:35And so I made a general confession of my entire life and
- 32:38I was bawling and sobbing throughout it because I at this
- 32:41point in my life, I was pretty good.
- 32:43Like I wasn't falling into mortal sin.
- 32:46Maybe it was like be a one off. So I was doing really well.
- 32:49But to look back on my life and to see how many people that I've
- 32:53hurt, to see how many times I fell into sin, I just felt
- 32:57really guilty when I was confessing.
- 32:59And the priest was like, well, your penance is very light
- 33:02because since your last confession, you really haven't
- 33:04done anything too bad. But consider praying all of the
- 33:07mysteries of the rosary every single day for an entire year in
- 33:12reparation for all of the evil that you've done and all the
- 33:15evil that you've spread and all the people that you've LED
- 33:17astray. You don't have to do it, but
- 33:20consider it. And if you do choose to do that,
- 33:23don't ever look back again. Say, Blessed Mother, I'm praying
- 33:27this time for a year for you to bring good out of all of my
- 33:30mistakes. I'm petitioning you to give
- 33:32grace to these individuals that I've hurt and then never look
- 33:36back. And so I accepted that offer and
- 33:40I began to live the rosary throughout the day.
- 33:44I pray a rosary in the morning when I woke up.
- 33:46I pray a rosary midday. I would pray a rosary in the
- 33:48early afternoon, and I would pray a rosary before bed.
- 33:50And my life dramatically changed.
- 33:52OK, so I, there's a lot I have to ask about this, especially
- 33:55because a lot of folks who listen to the show are not
- 33:57Catholic. So we get into Catholic stuff
- 33:59and thank you for those that are patient for your patience.
- 34:02Patience when I do this on this show, we talk about a lot of
- 34:04things. But of course you guys know I'm
- 34:05Catholic and I'm very passionate.
- 34:07You're obviously very passionate about your Catholic faith and
- 34:09it's just about God. We all, I think everyone who
- 34:11listens to the show is seeking God.
- 34:13So what is the rosary? And you mentioned you pray for
- 34:18rosaries. Are you still doing this?
- 34:20Oh yeah, I'm praying a little bit more than that.
- 34:21Yeah, OK. Oh, wow.
- 34:22OK. Yeah, this is a full time rosary
- 34:24prayer and. We, yeah, it's kind of a little
- 34:27bit longer story, but yes, the rosary, I have been convinced,
- 34:31thoroughly convinced that it is theologically the most profound
- 34:35spiritual prayer for any Christian, not just for a
- 34:38Catholic that exists. And I pray it not because it's a
- 34:43pious thing anymore. I pray because I don't know of a
- 34:45better prayer that exists and I cannot come up with one.
- 34:48For those who are not familiar or maybe they've heard,
- 34:50obviously the rosary, everyone's heard of a rosary, but what is
- 34:54the rosary composed of? So I like to joke that the first
- 34:58ingredient of the rosary is death because it does require a
- 35:02certain like, like there's like, I'll be honest, there's very few
- 35:06times where I really want to pray it.
- 35:09I know that I need to, I can notice in myself that I'm
- 35:12getting edgy or antsy. So the first component of
- 35:15praying the rosary is a certain self denial that Christ asks of
- 35:19us. One of the secrets to holiness.
- 35:21As an aside, one of the secrets to holiness and the secrets to
- 35:24happiness is doing God's will for your life, discerning what
- 35:27God is calling you to do and doing it.
- 35:29That is the essence of holiness, to be united to Christ.
- 35:31But so often Christians don't do God's will because they don't
- 35:36want to or because they have. They don't know what God's will
- 35:38is. They haven't asked God.
- 35:41And So what the rosary, the very onset forces you to do is stop
- 35:46doing what you want to do and be attentive to the voice of God,
- 35:49which is like the very first ingredient is the choice to
- 35:51pray, then the prayers, the vocal prayers of the rosary, the
- 35:55Our Father, the Hail Mary. It's kind of like stirring up a
- 35:58whirlwind of the Holy Spirit by praying the prayer that the Lord
- 36:01taught by saying the Hail Mary. I know a lot of our Protestant
- 36:05brothers and sisters don't like that idea of praying the Hail
- 36:07Mary. But if you think about it
- 36:09objectively, those are the most sacred words in the history of
- 36:12humanity. It is at the invocation of the
- 36:15Angel Gabriel when he says to the Virgin Mary, Hail full of
- 36:18grace. It is that moment that all of
- 36:23salvation history changes, where Mary says Thy will be done, let
- 36:27it be done to me according to Thy word.
- 36:29The Holy Spirit comes upon her, fills her, the second person of
- 36:34the Holy Trinity takes on flesh, and God enters the world and
- 36:38hope enters humanity. Those words always call down the
- 36:42power of the Holy Spirit. Those words always tug on the
- 36:45heart of God the Father. Those words always get the
- 36:48attention of every Angel. Those the angels have been
- 36:50waiting since the fall of Adam and Eve for those words to be
- 36:54proclaimed. So it sounds like it's very
- 36:56Marian and it is, but it's Christocentric.
- 36:59And so when you say those words and the our Fathers, that isn't
- 37:05the rosary. The heart of the rosary is
- 37:08spending time with Christ in the mysteries of his life.
- 37:12So I'll have my rosary beads out because I always carry them.
- 37:15And this is kind of like a tour of the life of Christ.
- 37:20And many people don't pray the rosary.
- 37:23Well, we use the word meditate on the mysteries.
- 37:28In my research to the various doctors of the Church, Teresa of
- 37:32Avila, John of the Cross, St. Alphonsus Saguari, Saint Francis
- 37:36de Sales, they will use the word mental prayer and meditation
- 37:41interchangeably within a couple of sentences of one another.
- 37:44And So what they mean when they're saying and what I
- 37:49believe Our Lady meant when she revealed this to Saint Dominic,
- 37:51to meditate upon the mystery is to 1.
- 37:56Make an act of faith that God is present.
- 37:57This is these are the steps of mental prayer.
- 37:59Make an act of faith. God, I believe you're present.
- 38:01I believe you're close to me. You're holding me into
- 38:02existence. I'm a temple of the Holy Spirit.
- 38:04To imagine to the best of your ability, the scene.
- 38:09Let's say for example, we're imagining the birth of the child
- 38:13Jesus in Bethlehem. So I would imagine a fat baby
- 38:16Jesus of just a chubbiest, cutest little person and imagine
- 38:20as if you're holding him or that you're there, you're a part of
- 38:23the scene. But the most important part of
- 38:28mental prayer or meditation is to speak to Christ in that
- 38:33scene. So for example, let's say you
- 38:36have a financial difficulty, you're praying the third joyful
- 38:39mystery of the Rosary. You're holding the fat baby
- 38:42Jesus. How long should I think about
- 38:45fat baby Jesus? The Saints say until it makes an
- 38:48impression on you and it can be any, any aspect of fat child.
- 38:53So just looking at fat feet, you know, fat baby feet that look
- 38:56like a loaf of bread, like you could just think of that.
- 38:59And when that makes an impression, you're like, oh, God
- 39:02became a man and had fat baby loaf feet.
- 39:05Now I can begin my conversation with Christ and just say, Lord,
- 39:09I need money. Good baby, you have no concept
- 39:12of money. Can I have some money?
- 39:14And then the so the first step of prayer is recollection,
- 39:18activate in the presence of God. The second step of prayer is
- 39:22consideration or meditation. The third step is conversation.
- 39:25But the conversation doesn't end when I tell baby Jesus I need
- 39:29money. I have to pause for a moment and
- 39:33allow the Lord to move in my heart.
- 39:35And that's different for different people, but I would.
- 39:38I've had this happen to me before.
- 39:40I'm praying to fat baby Jesus. Lord, I need money.
- 39:43And then I look into his beautiful brown eyes.
- 39:45I'm imagining them. Of course.
- 39:46I don't know what his eyes look like, but I'm imagining it.
- 39:49And I sense him. And the stirrings of my heart
- 39:52say you're holding me, and I trust you to hold me.
- 39:56Do you trust me to hold you? And yes, it's my imagination,
- 40:02but something happens in the depths of my soul.
- 40:04That changes me, and God communicates through movements
- 40:07of the soul, through what we call consolations.
- 40:10So that process, once you know it, recollection, consideration,
- 40:14conversation, once you practice it and you practice it very well
- 40:18in the rosary takes about 30 seconds.
- 40:21And when you start to pray the rosary like that, when you're
- 40:23having an encounter with the person of Christ and all the
- 40:26various aspects of his life mixed with the our Father, mixed
- 40:30with the prayer, the Hail Mary, which was the beginning of the
- 40:33end of Satan because Christ became word Incarnate on this
- 40:37earth. That to me, that scientific like
- 40:41does a prayer that has all of those elements exist like I
- 40:45don't know one where I'm in the presence of Christ, stirring up
- 40:48a whirlwind of the Holy Spirit around me like it's.
- 40:51So I love so much of what you're saying.
- 40:53There's so much to unpack here. I mean, starting with what you
- 40:56were saying, I mean, there's the our Father at the beginning of
- 40:58each of the decades, the five decades of the, of the rosary.
- 41:01And then you have the 10 Hail Marys and they have the glory
- 41:03be. But starting with the Our
- 41:04Father, this is the perfect prayer, right?
- 41:05Jesus literally tells us this is how you pray.
- 41:07Everybody so like to pray the Our Father, not just once a day,
- 41:11but throughout the day. This is the prayer that God
- 41:13himself gave us. There's one prayer, it's this
- 41:16prayer and then you were saying about the, the greeting of the
- 41:20Angel to Mary. And I love what you're saying
- 41:23about the Holy Spirit. He's, he's coming upon Mary.
- 41:26This is how Jesus Christ comes into the world incredibly.
- 41:30And I can you just, I guess it's like sense for a moment, like
- 41:33what would, what was the room like that room when Mary
- 41:36received this message and she said yes to the Angel, yes to
- 41:40God, to be the mother of God, mother of Jesus, like the
- 41:43intensity of the experience of the Holy Spirit in that room,
- 41:46like the, it was just, I can't even, it was mind blowing.
- 41:50But of course Mary had that experience.
- 41:53And so we're, we're asking to share in, we're asking to share
- 41:57in the incarnation. Really.
- 41:59I mean, that's what you're saying because, because the
- 42:02whole, you know, the rosary, it's the life of Christ, all the
- 42:04scenes of his life, all of the different mysteries.
- 42:07And so you're asking to be there with him in his life and then
- 42:11his death, his passion, his death, and then his
- 42:14resurrection, his into eternity. And what is The Who?
- 42:18Who is the Christian that doesn't do that?
- 42:21Like how do we do Christianity without entering into the life
- 42:26of Christ? I mean, right.
- 42:28I mean, we can't to me. It's like, it's pretty
- 42:30incredible. Like it sounds great as long as
- 42:33people don't see it as that's something that Catholics do.
- 42:35Like, no, it's a good prayer for all Christians.
- 42:38I mean, it's the Gospels. Yeah, it's the Gospels.
- 42:39It's the Gospel, the the the rosary is the Gospels.
- 42:43And I often would ponder, because, you know, they say Mary
- 42:46pondered all these things in her heart.
- 42:47I would ponder what did she pondered the most?
- 42:50And I would think to myself, maybe it was a Eucharist, maybe
- 42:52it was a crucifixion. But then as I was praying the
- 42:56rosary, it dawned on me she pondered the incarnation the
- 42:59most because without God becoming man, he can't be
- 43:03crucified. Without God becoming man, we
- 43:05can't receive him in Holy Communion.
- 43:07When she looked at him when he was sucking on her breast, she
- 43:10thought to herself, God became man and I am nursing him.
- 43:14God became man and he is playing outside right now.
- 43:17God became man and he's hanging on the cross like so to.
- 43:21For people who might feel like it's a lot of Hail Marys, Yeah.
- 43:25And if you're uncomfortable saying the Hail Mary, you can
- 43:28just say the first half of it. Hail Mary full of grace.
- 43:31The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women,
- 43:33and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
- 43:34If you feel uncomfortable saying Holy Mary Mother of God, pray
- 43:38for us sinners now like. Just say the first part.
- 43:40If you're just if you're uncomfortable.
- 43:42With it. But the other thing is, like all
- 43:43generations will call me blessed.
- 43:45Yeah, I mean that that like Mary predicts that all generations
- 43:49will call me blessed if not for the rosary.
- 43:52Practically, what does that even mean?
- 43:54Right? How would that predict create me
- 43:56insight? Great insight.
- 43:57Because that's what we do. We say Hail Mary, full of grace.
- 44:00We're calling her blessed with every bead.
- 44:02We pray. And I have a lot of Protestant
- 44:04friends and I from whenever they lose a loved one, they will tell
- 44:09me things like I know my grandfather's watching over me
- 44:12in heaven. Like I know he's I know he's by
- 44:14my side. He's like my Angel.
- 44:15And I don't correct him. It's like, well, he's actually
- 44:17like you're St. but so there is a deep down belief that their
- 44:22loved one is alive in Christ that they have.
- 44:24If they're watching over you, what does that mean?
- 44:27They're protecting you somehow they're interceding for you.
- 44:30So I don't think that there's a disconnect.
- 44:32I think that it's maybe might be like a our team doesn't do that
- 44:36sometimes kind of like attitude. But I think that if you just
- 44:39look at it from an unbiased perspective, it's pretty great.
- 44:45So you mentioned Mary giving this to Saint Dominic.
- 44:48Yes, yes. What can you share about what
- 44:51happened? Because even the idea of this
- 44:53like. Hold it up for us again, please.
- 44:55Yeah, my weapon. So the Lila Rose podcasts have a
- 44:57special rosary that we have in the shop we're gonna lie to.
- 44:59Shops. But that's that is like a
- 45:01hardcore. Rosary got good taste and style
- 45:04so I'm sure the Lila rose Lila rose rosary.
- 45:06And have roses on it, of course, but but if you don't mind
- 45:09holding up, so you've got the crucifix with this is where you
- 45:12do the Creed, right? And then the Our Father hail
- 45:14mares. And then there's the five
- 45:15decades. Mine is covered in little.
- 45:18Medallions of my favorite Saints.
- 45:19I'd love the zeal gave it's amazing.
- 45:22But so this idea of having these beads strong on rope, right or
- 45:27whatever. Can you tell us the history of
- 45:30what how this originated? Covenant Eyes helps men and

- 46:11and and many religions have beads on ropes to keep track of
- 46:14various prayers that people pray.
- 46:16And so prior to the introduction of the Rosary by the Blessed
- 46:20Mother to Saint Dominic, there was a kind of a rosary because
- 46:24religious would pray the Liturgy of the Hours, which is the
- 46:27Psalms, 150 of them throughout the day.
- 46:30Lay people at this time couldn't read so that they didn't know
- 46:33the Psalms and so they would pray our Fathers Hail Marys or
- 46:37other prayers depending on which region they were from.
- 46:40So they would pray the Hail Mary before the introduction of the
- 46:42Rosary. Right.
- 46:43Yeah, some. Some would pray 150 of them.
- 46:45So we would. But was it did include pray for
- 46:47us now in the hour of our. Or death, or just the first part
- 46:50of the first part. The angels greeting was up until
- 46:53Pope Pius the 5th during the Battle of Lepanto and the
- 46:58Council of Trent. He added the second-half of the
- 47:00Hail Mary. So well after the introduction
- 47:02of the Rosary to Saint Dominic, because I think that was like in
- 47:05the 13th century, it was into the 16th century that we started
- 47:08praying the Holy Mary, Mother of God first, now at the hour of
- 47:12our death. So that was like the later add
- 47:13on. That was after the Battle of the
- 47:15Ponto. Or around that time, Yeah, it
- 47:17was around that time, definitely introduced by Pius the 5th, so
- 47:20maybe before. Do you know why he did that?
- 47:22I have no idea, but I think I think it's a pretty good idea,
- 47:26though. It's actually pretty, pretty
- 47:27genius because you're asking Mary to pray for you now and at
- 47:31the hour of your death. So if you prayed 50 Hail Marys
- 47:34today and tomorrow and tomorrow for 365 days times 50 years of
- 47:38your life, when you die, you're going to have hundreds of
- 47:41thousands of Hail Marys coming to you at the hour of your
- 47:44death, which is a very, you know, important moment.
- 47:48And so, like, Our Lady's just going to be, like, present, like
- 47:51just raining down graces upon you from a lifetime of prayers.
- 47:54So it's a pretty brilliant addition.
- 47:57Yeah. But I can't, other than it's
- 47:59being brilliant, I can't think of anything else.
- 48:01He doubled the length of it. So moderns, sometimes moderns
- 48:05who are very trad and they're against new things, they will be
- 48:10against the Luminous Mysteries and against Pope John Paul the
- 48:122nd. And they will say things like
- 48:13how dare Pope John Paul the Second that's so prideful to add
- 48:18to whatever the Mary gave. That's perfect.
- 48:21But by that same logic, we shouldn't be praying the
- 48:24second-half of the Hail Mary, because when Mary gave the
- 48:26rosary to Saint Dominic, it was just the first half of the Hail
- 48:30Mary it was not. This is so inside baseball for
- 48:32people. But no, no, what you're saying
- 48:34it's it's great, it's fun, but Saint John Paul the second our
- 48:37Pope, he he gave us the luminous, luminous mysteries.
- 48:41He introduced them for the church, which is certain parts
- 48:44of Jesus's ministry, like his ministerial life, his public
- 48:47ministry life when the other mysteries and the other
- 48:50rosaries, because there's 4 right.
- 48:52You have the joint look, you give them to us.
- 48:54So originally introduced by the Virgin Mary or that she
- 48:57requested of Saint Dominic where the joyful mysteries which
- 49:00covered the Annunciation through Jesus's childhood and it ends
- 49:03with. So when the Angel Gabriel's
- 49:04announcing Jesus? Christ, Sumerian of the Rosary.
- 49:07Conceives Jesus. That's the beginning of the
- 49:09first rosary. Yeah.
- 49:10And then the there's five mysteries that you can pray that
- 49:14we call them the joyful. And it ends with finding the
- 49:16child Jesus after he was lost in the temple.
- 49:19Then in the original rosary it would go to the Sorrowful
- 49:21Mysteries, which is the Passion of Jesus, and then it would go
- 49:25into the Glorious Mysteries which involved the resurrection,
- 49:27ascension, descent of the Holy Spirit.
- 49:28So there was a major gap in the life of Christ.
- 49:31And one of the genius parts of the Rosary is that my children
- 49:36at the age of 10, because we prayed the rosary every day as a
- 49:39family, knew more about the life of Christ than many adults
- 49:43because they prayed the rosary they got, they covered Jesus
- 49:46from his childhood all the way to his adulthood.
- 49:49John Paul the Second adding those luminous mysteries, those
- 49:52public ministry days actually did something again
- 49:55theologically profound because the baptism of Jesus, the
- 50:01wedding feast of Cana St. John the Baptist.
- 50:04The proclamation of the Kingdom, the transfiguration, and the
- 50:07institution of the Eucharist are all things that are under attack
- 50:10right now in the Church. And so by meditating upon those
- 50:14mysteries, there's a saying in theology.
- 50:16A grace remembered is a grace renewed.
- 50:18So by meditating on baptism, meditating on the sacrament of
- 50:21holy Matrimony, meditating on the importance of preaching,
- 50:24meditating on the divinity of Christ, meditating on the
- 50:26institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood, what he's doing
- 50:29in prayer is renewing all of those aspects of the Church.
- 50:33What's so powerful about what you're saying gave it so good?
- 50:36And it's also very convicting, even for me because I think
- 50:40about when I pray the rosary, we pray a decade each night with
- 50:42our very young children. I mean, it would be great if we
- 50:45did the whole thing, but we get through a decade with our very
- 50:47young kids. But just the importance of
- 50:50connecting it to a mystery because I think in my I'll just
- 50:55share my own life of praying the rosary.
- 50:57And I know I've observed in many people's it's part of a habit
- 51:00which can be very beautiful and good.
- 51:02But then you're like, OK, this what's mystery?
- 51:04Is it? Oh yeah, the you know, the agony
- 51:05in the garden. OK, OK.
- 51:08And you're like, you know, you do your thing, but you're not.
- 51:11Are you putting the, taking the, the movement of the heart and
- 51:15the mind to move to, OK, what am I actually doing here?
- 51:19Who am I with here? What's happening here?
- 51:21And it's so easy to make it a routine.
- 51:23And again, the Lord blesses even the smallest movement of our
- 51:26heart. And even if we do 1 little
- 51:27thing, God will use it. And maybe we're exhausted or our
- 51:30brain is fried and that's OK. Just like you're there with
- 51:34Mary, you're there with Jesus. So let that be enough.
- 51:37But we have so many opportunities, like you're
- 51:39saying to say, OK, what am I? Am I really in the garden
- 51:42watching Jesus sweat blood for me?
- 51:45This is for me. He's doing this, you know, like
- 51:48and and but like. Let yourself experience.
- 51:50Be there with him. Be there with him, but also let
- 51:52yourself be loved by him like he's doing this for you.
- 51:54This is a tremendous amount of suffering he's enduring for us.
- 51:58Do we know? Do we let ourselves feel how
- 52:00loved we are that someone would do this for us?
- 52:03You know, we don't even think about it.
- 52:05You know, we just go and do our lives right.
- 52:07And so, but what you're saying is so beautiful to really make
- 52:10that the practice of the rosary, not just to say the words, but
- 52:14to mentally pray the. Words to the best of your
- 52:18ability. To the best of your ability,
- 52:20tell it. Talk to me more about the mental
- 52:21prayer, because you were saying it's synonymous with meditation
- 52:24and many of the writings of the lives of the Saints.
- 52:26I'm sorry, Gabe. There's one more thing I meant
- 52:28to ask you to do. I'm.
- 52:29I'm moving you too many places. Saint Dominic.
- 52:32Yes. Our Lady giving Saint Dominic
- 52:34the rosary. Just give us that scene.
- 52:35What? Happened with that brief
- 52:37version. So Saint Dominic was a great
- 52:39preacher. I, I kind of imagine him like a
- 52:41mixture of Bishop Baron with Fulton Sheen, just like the guy
- 52:45you want to hear, like he just, he, he always delivers, but he
- 52:48wasn't being fruitful. And so that really bothered him
- 52:52because he was trying to convert a, a group called the
- 52:55Albigensians and he was not effective.
- 52:57Where? Where was this?
- 52:58This is in France. So he offered himself to Our
- 53:02Lady, as we we would call it a victim soul.
- 53:05I don't think he was thinking about that.
- 53:06He was just begging, Blessed Mother, help me.
- 53:09I want to be able to reach hardened sinners.
- 53:11I I want to call down the power of the Holy Spirit like Jesus
- 53:15promised that we'd have streams of living water flowing through
- 53:18US. I want all of that.
- 53:20So he was preaching in France, in like now France, modern day
- 53:24France and he what, what year, what roughly what year was this?
- 53:26Twelve, 13th century, early 1200s.
- 53:29OK, so he's 1200s. He's there to convert people.
- 53:33And he's a really good, talented preacher, it sounds like.
- 53:36But he's having trouble with fruitfulness.
- 53:38He's like, people are not converting.
- 53:39What am I doing wrong here? And so he does literally Hail
- 53:42Mary. I mean, he's like, Mary, help me
- 53:44out. That's kind of the thing Mary
- 53:45for help, he fasts, he takes the discipline, which isn't a
- 53:49popular thing anymore. It's like doing penance and tell
- 53:51the point that he faints and the Virgin Mary appears to him and
- 53:55says to him, Dominic, my well beloved son, because you have
- 53:58been so faithful, our Lord is going to answer your prayer.
- 54:01And this is going to be a prayer that calls down the power of the
- 54:04Holy Spirit that reaches the heart of heart and sinners and
- 54:08everywhere you promote this rosary, you're going to be
- 54:10fruitful. And these are her exact words
- 54:11that I'm going to quote to you because they're very profound.
- 54:13She said in this type of warfare, the battering ram has
- 54:18been and always will be the angelic salutation, which is the
- 54:22cornerstone of the New Testament.
- 54:24That's very profound because Jesus said the gates of hell
- 54:28shall not prevail against the church.
- 54:31And often I used to think at least that that meant that we're
- 54:35going to put up boundaries and we're going to keep hell out and
- 54:38it's going to be a small remnant.
- 54:40But that wasn't Jesus's intention.
- 54:42Jesus's intention was the gates of hell shall not prevail
- 54:44against you. Wherever there's hell in your
- 54:46family, wherever there's hell in your community or at work, by
- 54:50the power of the Holy Spirit, you're going to go in there and
- 54:52you're going to bring the light of Christ.
- 54:54And so how do you bring the light of Christ into a community
- 54:57that does not want Christ the same way Jesus did?
- 55:00Hail Mary, full of grace. It is those words that broke
- 55:03down the walls of the Kingdom of Satan here on earth.
- 55:07And those words were fruitful then, and they're going to be
- 55:09fruitful today, and they'll be fruitful tomorrow.
- 55:11So in this type of warfare, the battering ram is the angelic
- 55:15salutation. And I just took Mary's.
- 55:17Yes, right. Yeah, Like Mary's yes to the
- 55:20Angel, to God, brought Jesus and then by his by through him and
- 55:24through her. Yes, we are saved.
- 55:26But you're saying when we say our yes to say to echo the words
- 55:30and to ask Mary to help us and bring Jesus into wherever we
- 55:33are. We can be conquerors to Satan
- 55:37wherever we go, even in our own family.
- 55:39It's so powerful because when you start to say those words,
- 55:43you will get inspirations. So you go in to pray the rosary
- 55:46with a conflict. You're praying because your
- 55:49husband or your wife is really, you know what?
- 55:52She's really getting on my nerves today.
- 55:54I'm trying to do what she wants me to do.
- 55:56And then she asked me to do something else.
- 55:57And you're stressed and you're praying Jesus carrying of the
- 56:00cross. And you're saying, our Father
- 56:01who art in heaven, Hail Mary full of grace, Hail Mary full of
- 56:04grace, Hail Mary full of grace. And while you're thinking of
- 56:06Jesus carrying the cross, he looks at you in a certain way
- 56:10and it hits you. What is Jesus doing?
- 56:12Patiently carrying his cross. He's patiently loving and you
- 56:17are strengthened to patiently love.
- 56:20And when you unite your will to the will of God, the power of
- 56:23the Holy Spirit flows out of you, and relationships are
- 56:26healed and marriages are made stronger and families are
- 56:30empowered. And so.
- 56:32You nailed it. Was Saint Dominic fruitful
- 56:34after? This.
- 56:35Oh my gosh, oh, he was so fruitful.
- 56:38Oh. Who did he convert?
- 56:39He converted everybody. He In the book The Secret of the
- 56:42Rose by Saint Louis De Montfort, there's a great testimony.
- 56:45He says everywhere that Dominic preached the rosary, hardened.
- 56:48Sinners were converted, miracles happened.
- 56:50Even young children were doing extreme penances.
- 56:54And throughout the history of the Church, wherever the Rosary
- 56:57was preached, sin died down. Not just said, but preached
- 57:02preached. What's the distinction preached?
- 57:03What does that mean? What we're not doing?
- 57:05Preach means promoting it and the best way to promote it, if
- 57:08people are listening and they're like, why?
- 57:10Where am I going to promote it? I'm not like a catechist teacher
- 57:12or anything like that. I don't have a podcast.
- 57:15The best time to promote it is anytime somebody's suffering.
- 57:18So Saint John of the Cross said that suffering endears men to
- 57:22Christ. So when a person in your family
- 57:24is suffering, give them a rosary, say or even say, I
- 57:29bought this for you, let me pray with you.
- 57:32And because they're vulnerable, they're open.
- 57:36They're open when people are suffering, we're willing to try
- 57:38anything to make it stop. And that is the perfect time for
- 57:41the grace of God to bring peace. Maybe they're they don't get the
- 57:44job or maybe they don't get physically healed.
- 57:47But one of the fruits of the rosary, because the rosary is
- 57:49inspired by the Word of God. What does the Word of God say
- 57:52about the fruits of the Spirit? The fruits of the Spirit are
- 57:55peace. One of them.
- 57:57And so you pray the rosary with somebody who's suffering, they
- 57:59will have peace. Or even just you tell them
- 58:01you're praying for them and give them a rosary that that that
- 58:04works too. Oh yes.
- 58:05So can you tell me about the Battle of Lepanto?
- 58:08I'm putting on the spot here, but we haven't actually talked
- 58:10about it yet on the show. And I think that's a really
- 58:13great, like historical record proof.
- 58:15Like it's really really just shows the proof of prayer, the
- 58:18power of prayer in human history, but specifically the
- 58:20rosary. Yes.
- 58:21So the Turks, the Ottoman Empire, the Muslims were
- 58:27invading, and the Christian fleets, it was a naval battle
- 58:31near Greece. The Christian fleets were vastly
- 58:34outnumbered. And the Pope called upon
- 58:38everybody universally, pray the rosary, pray the rosary, pray
- 58:41the rosary, pray the rosary. He was just doing everything.
- 58:44That was like a letter he wrote Chris and him because obviously.
- 58:46There's no like he was. Social media or phones to.
- 58:49Yeah, he was the Rosary Warrior promoting it.
- 58:52So everyone knew the Ottoman Turks are coming.
- 58:55They're more powerful than we are.
- 58:56They're going to basically what pillage us.
- 58:58Yes, and this is the last stand you and I would be if I was
- 59:01alive, I would be named Muhammad right now because all of Western
- 59:04civilization would have crumbled.
- 59:05This was like a major, major. Battle.
- 59:08So they were Muslim? Yeah, they were Muslim.
- 59:10So a lot of people don't know the history here.
- 59:12So it's but it's fascinating, right.
- 59:14So this is and you're saying if they had overtaken the
- 59:20Christians they would have not stopped there, they would have
- 59:22gone further, further South into Europe?
- 59:26Yes, and this was something that all historians agree upon, that
- 59:29this battle was decisive and in the middle of the battle the
- 59:34winds started to change and ended up supporting the
- 59:38Christian armies, and the Christian armies, although
- 59:41vastly outnumbered, totally destroyed it.
- 59:44But they were all praying the rosary during.
- 59:45This no the people, the people of God are praying the rosary.
- 59:48So, so, so everyone's praying the rosary and you're saying all
- 59:52of a sudden as they're are they, are they actively praying the
- 59:55rosary? Well, their battle or all their?
- 59:56Family is praying the rosary. The people who are not at or are
- 59:59praying, they're. For them, but this was everyone
- 1:00:01agreed this is our this is our plan we're.
- 1:00:03Just going to pray going in. Yes, what else can we do?
- 1:00:05They even had an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe as like as
- 1:00:09their standard. So Our Lady was very, very
- 1:00:12prominent, very prominent. And it was a very decisive
- 1:00:16victory. But, and sometimes I get upset
- 1:00:18with the Church because we talked about the Battle of
- 1:00:20Lepanto and it's like, why do we always refer to the Battle of
- 1:00:23Lepanto? Because it's very famous,
- 1:00:24because afterwards Pope Pius, the 5th named October 7th to be
- 1:00:29the feast of Our Lady of Victory.
- 1:00:31And October 7th today is known as Our Lady of the Rosary.
- 1:00:35So there is a synonymous tie there that in the Rosary you
- 1:00:39will have victory. My friend Padre Pio, I don't
- 1:00:42really know him, but I prayed him a lot to her buddies.
- 1:00:44He said that the Rosary is the prayer for those who are
- 1:00:47victorious over everyone and over everything, and we haven't
- 1:00:51won in a long time. As Catholics.
- 1:00:54Our last major battle was the Battle of Lepanto.
- 1:00:57Like our physical battle? Yeah, spiritual battle, like it
- 1:01:00feels like the Catholic Church is irrelevant.
- 1:01:04You think so? Oh, I think so.
- 1:01:05I think that people ask me, they say.
- 1:01:08You mean in like human affairs? In human affairs, like, yeah,
- 1:01:10people like they. A priest goes into one of my my
- 1:01:13pastors, he wears the cassock. He goes to the store.
- 1:01:15People think he's cosplaying. The Catholic Church used to be
- 1:01:18the number one biggest influencer in the entire world.
- 1:01:21Now we're kind of like an actor. Patron of the arts.
- 1:01:23The Patron. Yeah, we used to be the best of
- 1:01:24everything, yeah. They would literally knight the
- 1:01:27appoint the king. I mean, it's interesting.
- 1:01:30I mean, I'm a little more hopeful maybe that there's a
- 1:01:32lot, a lot of good we're doing. Good, but we're not winning.
- 1:01:36Well, it depends what we mean. What do you What do you mean?
- 1:01:39Right. I mean, we're the battle for
- 1:01:40souls that happens on a daily basis.
- 1:01:43You think we're losing? Even at a good parish that's
- 1:01:45thriving and flourishing, there are more Catholics out of the
- 1:01:48Church than are in the Church. Meaning these are Catholics,
- 1:01:52they are baptized Catholics, and they're not, they're not living
- 1:01:55their Catholic faith for sure. Yeah, well, no.
- 1:01:57And the number of people even listening to this show right
- 1:01:59now, if you're still listening, things for continuing to listen
- 1:02:01if you are not Catholic. They were maybe race Catholic
- 1:02:04and they become evangelical because being race Catholic,
- 1:02:07they felt they never had an encounter with.
- 1:02:08Jesus, right? I think heartbreaking, right, is
- 1:02:11a resurgence in Catholic circles, getting more faithful,
- 1:02:15getting stronger, learning their faith.
- 1:02:17I think more Catholics now than ever before know their faith.
- 1:02:20We're like, there's no shortage of apologetics and information
- 1:02:24out there. I think that the number of those
- 1:02:25actively engaged is way smaller. And I feel it on a daily basis
- 1:02:30when I work with my high school teens and they come and I have
- 1:02:34they they don't know anything. They don't know anything.
- 1:02:36And I'm like, well, did you make your first communion?
- 1:02:38Yeah, we made our first communion.
- 1:02:39We're baptized. Yeah.
- 1:02:41That reminds me when I was the confirmation sponsor for a very
- 1:02:45sweet, dear, beloved person in my life, young woman.
- 1:02:49She was at the time. I don't know, you know, I don't
- 1:02:51know. What is it, 1514?
- 1:02:52Years old when you make your. First confirmation, this was
- 1:02:55over a decade ago and I flew to her to be her confirmation
- 1:02:59sponsor and I remember meeting with her and her other class and
- 1:03:03this is, you know, in the West Coast and there I was like, are
- 1:03:06you guys excited to be, you know, being confirmed?
- 1:03:08You know, you're going to have the power to be martyrs, like
- 1:03:10the the Holy Spirit is going to give you these incredible
- 1:03:13inspiration, like whatever. And they're all just like, oh,
- 1:03:15really, whatever. We're just doing this because
- 1:03:17our parents telling us to do this.
- 1:03:18And I was like, well, do you want to pray together?
- 1:03:20You know, I don't know why we have the special time we were.
- 1:03:22Just waiting. I love that time.
- 1:03:23Yeah, I was just trying to like, and they're like, OK, yeah,
- 1:03:26sure. We let's all pray.
- 1:03:27And I was like, how about we pray like the rosary or
- 1:03:29something, you know, like, and and I was like, or we maybe it's
- 1:03:32too long. Let's do a decade.
- 1:03:34They didn't know how to pray a Hail Mary.
- 1:03:36Wow, no. Way they didn't know that.
- 1:03:38They didn't know how to pray a Hail Mary.
- 1:03:41That's tough. And but, but it's like this is
- 1:03:43the catechesis today in a lot of the Western Church.
- 1:03:45That's tough. We're not even telling them what
- 1:03:48the rosary means and how to pray it, among many other things,
- 1:03:51right on faith and. Morals.
- 1:03:52There is there is a resurgence though, like I've I've heard
- 1:03:55from a lot of catechists, a lot of people involved in faith
- 1:03:59formation, those who are in the know are stronger than ever.
- 1:04:03But I think now our strategy has to be how can we reach people
- 1:04:08outside of our bubble? Yeah, that's that's the
- 1:04:12challenge. One thing I have to say here for
- 1:04:15folks listening is that you mentioned Our Lady of Victory
- 1:04:18and Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7th.
- 1:04:21As everyone knows, there's the election happening early
- 1:04:22November. There's a lot of attention on
- 1:04:24the federal election, but honestly, I don't think that is
- 1:04:27that's important. But there's a lot going on there
- 1:04:29that's conflicting and confusing and we're not going to talk
- 1:04:32about that right now. What I will say though, is in
- 1:04:33the state, in a few states, including the states of Florida
- 1:04:36and Missouri, they have these ballot initiatives which would
- 1:04:39put abortion in the state constitution up until birth.
- 1:04:42These are states that have a lot of Pearl life laws as it stands.
- 1:04:45And it's really a, it's a, it's a get out the vote game.
- 1:04:48Like are people going to show up and vote no in Missouri on
- 1:04:50Amendment 3 and no in Florida on Amendment 4?
- 1:04:53You got to vote no because the amendments would put abortion in
- 1:04:55the state constitution. Literally 10s of thousands,
- 1:04:58potentially hundreds and millions of future lives are at
- 1:05:00risk because of these specific ballot initiative.
- 1:05:03So the Pearl equipment lost a bunch of these in the last two
- 1:05:05years since Roe fell. So if you're listening, pray the
- 1:05:08rosary or just pray however you can.
- 1:05:11But the rosary, particularly for victory.
- 1:05:15This is why I really, I really like you and I really like your
- 1:05:18podcast because you talk about doing practical things to win.
- 1:05:23Sometimes our faith can be overly spiritualized, but if
- 1:05:27it's not practical, if it's not lived, like what are we doing,
- 1:05:31What are we doing? What are we doing?
- 1:05:32It's like not in so much for bringing.
- 1:05:34That right, it's not in past and that's the back of the Rose
- 1:05:36from. Flesh.
- 1:05:37Yeah, we have to live what we believe, love it and like make
- 1:05:40that sometimes that's going to look a little countercultural or
- 1:05:42it's going to be a little bit risky how we live it.
- 1:05:45So and it's we I'll also just share, we launch, we have live
- 1:05:48action. We actually just launched live
- 1:05:50action victory. And I didn't actually, I didn't
- 1:05:53actually think about the. Connection I.
- 1:05:54Love that, but I love it. I'm going to right now just ask
- 1:05:58the Blessed Mother to give particular help in the those
- 1:06:01efforts for victory because we need wins and we need
- 1:06:04particularly to win for the sake of these lives.
- 1:06:07But the the challenge, I'll just say 1 I think the challenge in
- 1:06:09the pearlife movement always is that our lives are not on the
- 1:06:11line. Right.
- 1:06:12That's right. Our lives are not on the line.
- 1:06:15And and when you look at other movements like, you know, people
- 1:06:17who are for gun rights or they're for, you know, economic
- 1:06:20things or, you know, they care about the economy or, you know,
- 1:06:22they're for freedom of speech, right?
- 1:06:23All of these important things, right?
- 1:06:26Those things they have like skin in the game, like I want my gun
- 1:06:29or they want their freedom of speech or they want they be able
- 1:06:31to pay for their gas, right? So people are like engaged,
- 1:06:34they're zoned in. But when it comes to pro-life,
- 1:06:37like you have to have an A level of detachment from what you care
- 1:06:43about in your given day, to care about people that you're never
- 1:06:46going to meet potentially who don't know you and have a sense
- 1:06:50of radical concern for their lives to the point of doing
- 1:06:52something to mess up your daily life for their.
- 1:06:54Sakes. So.
- 1:06:57Yes, and praying, I think that people of prayer, when they go
- 1:07:01to pray, they are confronted with God and the voice of God
- 1:07:05speaks to them. And he's the one who convicts us
- 1:07:08to act, especially in pro-life causes, because we're not, we
- 1:07:12don't have skin in the game, but when he touches our heart, we,
- 1:07:15he just has a way of convicting us that we feel guilty if we
- 1:07:18don't do his will. And 100% we have to pray for
- 1:07:22these. This is a spiritual battle.
- 1:07:25You've talked about it many times, the sacrifice of human
- 1:07:29children. It's a, it's a moral evil and
- 1:07:31it's a moral evil that attracts bad spirits.
- 1:07:35And they want abortion more than you could ever dream of, I would
- 1:07:40hope. Can we give a couple of tips for
- 1:07:42those people who want to try the rosary out for a couple days?
- 1:07:44So one of my tips that I have is that I always carry a rosary
- 1:07:48with me. So some people will make the
- 1:07:49resolution like I'm going to try to pray the rosary every day.
- 1:07:52You're more likely to keep a resolution if you actually have
- 1:07:55a physical rosary on your person.
- 1:07:58Rosaries can be expensive and there can be some cheap ones
- 1:08:01that if you can't afford 1, you can get like a plastic one.
- 1:08:03There's at your local church. They have some.
- 1:08:05But I encourage people to spend money on a rosary, spend 50
- 1:08:08dollars, $45.00 to buy a nice rosary that's durable, that
- 1:08:14you're not just going to leave it anywhere.
- 1:08:15You're like, you're going to know where your rosary is.
- 1:08:17Kind of like I know where my phone is.
- 1:08:19So that's yeah. We spend $1000 on our phones.
- 1:08:22On a phone, yeah. So it's like get a nice rosary,
- 1:08:25get a nice rosary. So that's tip #1, tip #2 is have
- 1:08:28an intention. So we're willing to do any.
- 1:08:31What if I have a strong? Why?
- 1:08:34So what is it that I care about or who is it that I love that at
- 1:08:39the end of the day when I'm tired and I haven't prayed, I'm
- 1:08:43going to get on my knees or I'm going to sit up straight and I'm
- 1:08:46going to pray this rosary because my mom is sick or
- 1:08:49because I have a brother who's an alcoholic and he's struggling
- 1:08:53and his family needs them. So you find AY that will
- 1:08:57motivate you to pray for 9 days. So try to make it a novena.
- 1:09:01Just try to go 9 days and what will what happen is that you
- 1:09:05will begin to notice the difference after 9 days of
- 1:09:08prayer, the peace that comes day 10.
- 1:09:11Let's say you don't do it. You're going to be like, man,
- 1:09:13I'm off today. I need to get that Rotary back
- 1:09:15in my life. It's making a huge difference in
- 1:09:17my life. So tip #1 carry rosary, tip #2
- 1:09:19have an intention. Tip #3 is don't be scrupulous.
- 1:09:23A lot of times the devil will discourage us.
- 1:09:26We'll hear a little voice in our head saying you're not good at
- 1:09:28that. It's not fruitful, it's not for
- 1:09:30you. You're not one of those people.
- 1:09:32Just do your best to get it done.
- 1:09:34I have found that on days where my mind is foggy, yesterday was
- 1:09:38one of those days where I was just like where am I going?
- 1:09:40What am I doing? When I get my prayers done and I
- 1:09:43say them, I still receive the grace it.
- 1:09:47Our prayer life isn't about feelings, it's about I'm praying
- 1:09:51because I love God and I'm trying and sometimes my best
- 1:09:54ain't pretty and this is what I have.
- 1:09:57Lord, this is what I'm presenting to you today.
- 1:10:00I'm not saying do it badly, but as you mentioned earlier, the
- 1:10:03ingredients of the rosary are so powerful that even when I pray
- 1:10:06it poorly, the words of Sacred Scripture, they do something.
- 1:10:10They plant seeds in my heart that actually grow to fruition.
- 1:10:15So don't be too hard on yourself.
- 1:10:18Don't be scrupulous tip #4 it's if you're trying to, if you have
- 1:10:22like a real like let's say for example, it's Election Day and
- 1:10:25you're like this, there's so much on the line.
- 1:10:28I just want to be in prayer all day often to pray prayers,
- 1:10:31rosaries nonstop. If maybe somebody's called to do
- 1:10:33that, everybody's different. I don't want anybody ever to
- 1:10:35feel like I'm not holy or I'm not good enough.
- 1:10:38Everybody's called to a different stage of prayer in
- 1:10:41their life. And the best way to discern that
- 1:10:43is just to ask God, God, what do you want from me?
- 1:10:46Look at my life. When should I pray?
- 1:10:48But if you're going to pray more than one, you only need to do
- 1:10:51the Apostles Creed and those that our Father and the three
- 1:10:54Hail Marys. I call them the jump on prayers.
- 1:10:56You only need to do the jump on prayers once.
- 1:10:59Yeah, you can just, you get on the track and you can just keep
- 1:11:01making the loops of the various mysteries.
- 1:11:03There's not a strict rule that you have to do the joyful and
- 1:11:07then the luminous and then the sorrowful and then the glorious.
- 1:11:10For some people you might do for glorious or just it's not
- 1:11:14there's not like a set defined rule as long as it has the life
- 1:11:17of Christ. Our fathers 10 Hail Marys you
- 1:11:20got the rosary. And then the final tip is make
- 1:11:23make a plan. Things that are important to us,
- 1:11:26we put them on the calendar. We say I've got a doctor's
- 1:11:29appointment at 3:00. I can't miss it.
- 1:11:30Similarly, I pray every morning right when I wake up.
- 1:11:35I I pray on my way home from work.
- 1:11:37Find a time where you're always going to pray, provided there's
- 1:11:40not like an emergency circumstance, of course, but
- 1:11:43find a time and make a plan. I I have found in my own life
- 1:11:46and in my friends that those people who wait to the very end
- 1:11:49of the night to pray the rosary and they're laying down in bed
- 1:11:52with the rosary like these beads are like my sleeping pills.
- 1:11:56I start praying these beads when I'm horizontal.
- 1:11:59What happens is I fall asleep. I heard it said though the
- 1:12:02guardian Angel finishes for you. I don't know about that I've.
- 1:12:06Heard that one. I've heard of that.
- 1:12:07I'm not sure if it's true or not, or else I would just be
- 1:12:09like Hail Mary, goodnight, make a plan.
- 1:12:14Hey, one Hail Mary is better than none, right?
- 1:12:16Frank 100%. Oh yes.
- 1:12:18If you want to start really simple, just at when you soon as
- 1:12:21you wake up, sit up and say Hail Mary, yes, you could do.
- 1:12:24You could start that. Yes, my favorite, one of my
- 1:12:26favorite coach from GK Chester. And he said if something is
- 1:12:28worth doing, it's worth doing poorly.
- 1:12:30Like just get it done, do something.
- 1:12:32Something is better than nothing.
- 1:12:34But I would recommend making a plan and that's the key to
- 1:12:36success for people who want to pray with their children.
- 1:12:40My least objectively from what my observations are, my prayers
- 1:12:44with my family, I feel like are the least nourishing for me
- 1:12:49because like we've got a lot of moving parts.
- 1:12:52I have a three-year old, I have a 7 year old.
- 1:12:54I have it's, it's chaos. The mom's listening right now,
- 1:12:58Gabe are like, tell me about it. It's chaos.
- 1:13:00Tell me about it. There's no.
- 1:13:01There's no silver bullet to getting your children to pray
- 1:13:04well again, don't be overly scrupulous about it.
- 1:13:08Something is better than nothing.
- 1:13:09One thing that worked when my children were younger is by
- 1:13:12telling them the story of the mystery.
- 1:13:15I would just tell them the story of Jesus's agony in the garden.
- 1:13:18It wouldn't be necessarily scripturally accurate all the
- 1:13:21time. I'll just give them my version
- 1:13:23of the gospel. Child appropriate.
- 1:13:24And my children, they love that part.
- 1:13:27Like tell us a story about Jesus again, I'm like, all right, here
- 1:13:29we go. And then I'll tell you, I'll
- 1:13:30tell you the next part of the story.
- 1:13:31But it's going to cost. And then you, then you tell
- 1:13:33them, hey, when, when we pray the human Aries, now you can
- 1:13:35think about the story. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:13:38So that works, but there's no silver bullet.
- 1:13:41I wish there was. I wish it was easy.
- 1:13:44But I have found in families that pray with their children,
- 1:13:47even if they pray a decade or they pray the full rosary, I
- 1:13:50have found it because I work with them.
- 1:13:52The kids that the kids in my youth group, they're good.
- 1:13:57Like they're, they're going to be OK.
- 1:13:59I, I say, hey, you guys pray as a family.
- 1:14:01You're a really good kid. You're really paying attention.
- 1:14:04Yeah, We pray. What do you guys pray?
- 1:14:05We pray a decade of the Rose. We pray the rosary as a family.
- 1:14:08They're good. They're really good kids.
- 1:14:11And the beauty. The beauty.
- 1:14:13Yeah. The beauty is that we don't know
- 1:14:15what our kids are going to do when they leave the house.
- 1:14:17But because of Pius the 5th adding that, pray for me now and
- 1:14:20at the hour of my death, when a child says that prayer and they
- 1:14:24leave the house, and even if it looks like they've forgotten
- 1:14:27about the Virgin Mary, the Virgin Mary doesn't forget her
- 1:14:29children. And she always works your way
- 1:14:31back into their lives. I've seen it time and time again
- 1:14:34where people who have had a devotion to the rosary as a
- 1:14:37family when they were younger, they maybe fall away.
- 1:14:40They end up coming back. This I just have to share
- 1:14:42something. This inspires me.
- 1:14:44What you're just saying I there's and I'm sure she'd be
- 1:14:46comfortable with me sharing this.
- 1:14:47She she shares it. But so in my family, you know, I
- 1:14:50became Catholic in college. My mother was raised Catholic,
- 1:14:54but it was like a cultural thing.
- 1:14:55And so they'd send the kids to Mass most Sundays, but the
- 1:14:58parents won't even go a. Lot of Sundays, yeah.
- 1:15:00It was like Italian Boston Catholics like that's what she
- 1:15:03how she was raised. So she became born again
- 1:15:05evangelical at age 20 someone like gave her a Bible for the
- 1:15:08first time and it like clicked for her.
- 1:15:10And so anyways, when our family, I was having this Catholic
- 1:15:13Catholicizing thing happened to us and I'm becoming Catholic, my
- 1:15:17daddy's becoming Catholic. My mom was like, okay, well, you
- 1:15:20know, I want to do what you guys are doing, but like, I have all
- 1:15:23these hang ups and does it really make sense?
- 1:15:25And she was going on this journey and one of the things
- 1:15:28that I remember her sharing, like there was almost this
- 1:15:30aversion to just like what she saw as this very sterile, even
- 1:15:35maybe judgmental, you know, not full of God's grace and the Holy
- 1:15:40Spirit, like lifestyle religion, like it was a cultural thing.
- 1:15:44And you know, Mary particularly, I think there was like all the
- 1:15:47people with their, you know, you know, that there's a stereotype
- 1:15:50that little old lady in the church with their, with their
- 1:15:52beads and the little rosary beads.
- 1:15:54And everyone kind of I think has their own the idea of this.
- 1:15:58Maybe it's baggage or a hang up or a trigger, but maybe it's a
- 1:16:02positive thing too. But for a lot of people, maybe
- 1:16:03it's not a positive thing and they look at it and are like,
- 1:16:05that looks like dollar trous or that just looks dumb or whatever
- 1:16:09they're thinking right and. In a way, do you blame them?
- 1:16:12We've got I got like 2 pictures. Well, I mean you're, he's like
- 1:16:16repping. I understand.
- 1:16:17You go hard, you feel like right.
- 1:16:19You're going hard, which is great, but but my mother now she
- 1:16:22prays the daily result. Oh, I love that.
- 1:16:25And maybe multiple sometimes, but but I watched it and I
- 1:16:28wasn't in her shoes, but I could see her having this like dealing
- 1:16:32with this aversion and this like wrestling with it.
- 1:16:35But I watched her graciously have a humility where she's
- 1:16:38like, I'm going to like just kind of let sit with this and
- 1:16:40like explore. She was exploring it.
- 1:16:43And then I saw I think it was really through going back to the
- 1:16:46Mass and like receiving the Eucharist and like sitting in
- 1:16:48front of the Eucharist, this new resurgence in her life.
- 1:16:51And now, I mean, my mother has always been a person I admire,
- 1:16:54has always been someone who's a source of wisdom and virtue that
- 1:16:57I look up to. But watching her since her
- 1:17:00reversion, if we could call it that, you know, her really
- 1:17:04becoming Catholic in terms of her living it, it's been
- 1:17:07incredibly inspiring for me. And I know that that's the story
- 1:17:10for many other people and sounds like in many ways for you.
- 1:17:14So thank you for responding to his call and being so all out
- 1:17:18about it, 'cause well, like, don't hide the light on her
- 1:17:21bushel. You are not hiding that light.
- 1:17:22Thank you, Gabe. Likewise to you, it's beautiful.
- 1:17:24As you were speaking, I could just feel Our Lady's presence
- 1:17:27wrapping her mantle around you. She's so pleased with you.
- 1:17:29She's so happy with all the things you're doing.
- 1:17:30Please keep it up. Praying for you, doing amazing
- 1:17:33things. Thank you how can I mean you
- 1:17:35have we didn't even talk about your channel.
- 1:17:36How can people find your channel?
- 1:17:37Your channel is very fun 'cause you all the.
- 1:17:39We also do like V logging and like all.
- 1:17:41Kinds of yeah, I do a lot of different things.
- 1:17:43I like variety. I can see that, yeah.
- 1:17:45Yeah, so my YouTube channel is called Gobby after Hours.
- 1:17:49It is unapologetically Catholic. So non Catholics who first watch
- 1:17:53it, they're like, Oh my gosh, this is kind of like a shock.
- 1:17:55This dude is like too Catholic. But I have found that once
- 1:17:58people kind of like get used to how, you know, far I go, they
- 1:18:04end up appreciating it and cherishing it.
- 1:18:06And then they become crazy Catholics as.
- 1:18:09Well have you done videos on like on the relics and going to
- 1:18:12see the dead body parts of? Yeah, I have.
- 1:18:14I have one of the best videos. If you want to go extra Catholic
- 1:18:17guys. Oh my gosh.
- 1:18:18Go look at the. Befriending.
- 1:18:20Befriending the Saints is what I call it.
- 1:18:21OK. And it has a nice.
- 1:18:22It has a nice potential. Of relative father Carlos is in
- 1:18:25it, and of course he's like the best he's the.
- 1:18:27When Father Carlos came on the show the other month, it was
- 1:18:29after he was coming from like some part of Southern California
- 1:18:33just drove in and he had Saint Jude's leg.
- 1:18:36Was it his? Leg His.
- 1:18:37Arm his arm. Literally the arm of body parts
- 1:18:40A. Body part he's touring around
- 1:18:43and thousands of people are coming to be blessed with a body
- 1:18:46part basically. And like, again to your your
- 1:18:48average evangelical, they're like, Get Me Out of here like
- 1:18:52this is, you know, this is what is this right?
- 1:18:54This is insane. But you wouldn't you enter and
- 1:18:57you kind of understand what it all means in the context of the
- 1:18:59faith and the, you know, the scripture and all of a sudden it
- 1:19:01just becomes so beautiful. But maybe that's another day,
- 1:19:05another day, another time. But thank you.
- 1:19:06So Gabby, Gabby, Gabby after. Hours and the reason for Gabby
- 1:19:09is because my mom is fluent in Spanish and in Spanish Gabriel
- 1:19:14the short is Gabby. What does your mom think about
- 1:19:17all this? My mom is incredible.
- 1:19:20My mom is the holiest woman that I know.
- 1:19:22She's currently doing a holy hour right now as we speak.
- 1:19:25She's done two hours of adoration.
- 1:19:27This was. After you came.
- 1:19:28Oh, yeah. So after my conversion, I came.
- 1:19:31The first person I needed to bring to the Lord was my mom.
- 1:19:33Wow. And she said yes.
- 1:19:35And she's been saying yes. And she's been going deeper and
- 1:19:38deeper every day. God is good.
- 1:19:40See, God is so good. He knows how much we love our
- 1:19:42family. Just like you with your mom.
- 1:19:43My mom is one of my biggest supporters.
- 1:19:46Beautiful. Thank you.
- 1:19:47Thank you. God bless you.
- 1:19:47Awesome. A huge thank you to our partner.
