- 2:51Speaker 1: Thank you. It's rarely. I'll watch your all my episodes.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I always tell people that Moneymaking Conversation interviews provide relatable
- 3:04Speaker 1: information to listen about career and financial planning. Like I said, check,
- 3:08Speaker 1: that's YouTube entre anewership. Check, that's YouTube motivation. Check that's
- 3:14Speaker 1: YouTube coming out of bankruptcy leadership. Check that's YouTube realizing. Hey,
- 3:18Speaker 1: you have to come together as a team and lead
- 3:20Speaker 1: as a team, overcoming the odds. At two thousand and
- 3:23Speaker 1: eight in your book, that was that was a devastating
- 3:25Speaker 1: moment for you guys, but you overcame the odds there
- 3:28Speaker 1: and how to live a balance life. And I want
- 3:30Speaker 1: to start right there because my favorite chapter in your book,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and I read the book and I had a really
- 3:35Speaker 1: great time of it, which I believe, I want to
- 3:37Speaker 1: says chapter eight and that's that's the family chapter, and
- 3:41Speaker 1: it talks about where you know the kids were being uh,
- 3:45Speaker 1: we will bring the work. And the reason I want
- 3:49Speaker 1: to bring that up because of the fact that you
- 3:51Speaker 1: know white families, that's that's allows them too, I think
- 3:56Speaker 1: an additional level of success because your children can assume
- 4:01Speaker 1: by watching your work ethic, by watching that success story,
- 4:05Speaker 1: by watching people of all race going by saying yes
- 4:08Speaker 1: sir and no sir, and you're telling them what to
- 4:10Speaker 1: do and living the professional life. I believe that was
- 4:13Speaker 1: an important time of just the learning process for your children. Correct, Absolutely,
- 4:19Speaker 1: it was. I mean, we we it was necessary for
- 4:23Speaker 1: us to have the kids come on the journey because
- 4:26Speaker 1: our first location is about two hours away from our
- 4:29Speaker 1: primary residence, you know at that point in time, so
- 4:32Speaker 1: you know, we had to go ahead and pack the
- 4:34Speaker 1: kids up on the weekends because we believe in touching
- 4:36Speaker 1: our stores, right you know, so, uh, they had to
- 4:40Speaker 1: come along with us once we got them out of school.
- 4:42Speaker 1: They came up for the weekend and they learned how
- 4:45Speaker 1: to you know, wash dishes, how sweet floors, and and
- 4:48Speaker 1: and and Greek customers and say hello. And my son, uh,
- 4:52Speaker 1: you know, was one of the first guys in the
- 4:55Speaker 1: back that we We had him cutting potatoes and his
- 4:58Speaker 1: little arm was getting tied everything like that. But it said, hey, son,
- 5:02Speaker 1: this is how this is how it is. And after
- 5:04Speaker 1: that day he said that he felt like SpongeBob in
- 5:07Speaker 1: the restaurant, right right, you just loved it. And now
- 5:12Speaker 1: down to your mom. Okay, your children, you know that
- 5:16Speaker 1: you know that that's a different perspective, you know, uh,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you know, he's a he's a man go get or
- 5:21Speaker 1: you know the old axiom. You know, he's the bread winder.
- 5:24Speaker 1: You know, he's supposed to leave the house. And and
- 5:26Speaker 1: then here your mom bringing you know, your children to
- 5:29Speaker 1: your place of work or your business. How did you
- 5:32Speaker 1: feel about that? I actually always wanted them to feel
- 5:38Speaker 1: that they had ownership in it as well, right, that
- 5:41Speaker 1: it wasn't just this is because they saw mom and
- 5:43Speaker 1: dad work jobs were mostly me. They saw me get
- 5:46Speaker 1: up and work for the county and go to work.
- 5:48Speaker 1: We had bringing your children a work day, so they
- 5:50Speaker 1: saw me in the social work position, right. But I
- 5:53Speaker 1: felt that it was so important that we're owners of
- 5:56Speaker 1: this business. I need them to see us in ownership
- 5:59Speaker 1: and see the mommy can work just as hard for
- 6:01Speaker 1: herself as she does for someone else. And when they
- 6:04Speaker 1: saw that, they developed they bought into the vision that
- 6:09Speaker 1: oh we really do on this like we're you know,
- 6:11Speaker 1: we're restaurant owners. And I'm like, yeah, it's us, it's
- 6:15Speaker 1: our family business. And I think a lot of times
- 6:18Speaker 1: our children don't know what we do, you know what
- 6:21Speaker 1: I mean, they don't see what we do on a
- 6:23Speaker 1: regular basis. So for me, I was just now. Of
- 6:26Speaker 1: course I had days like okay, he's tired, he don't
- 6:29Speaker 1: need to wash, no more dishes, I'll finish, and you know,
- 6:31Speaker 1: and it's like yeah, thank you, mama, thank you mama.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Where are you going? Where are you going? And also
- 6:50Speaker 1: even with allowance with paying them, you know, I was like, okay,
- 6:53Speaker 1: we wanted to show them that we're gonna still pay you.
- 6:56Speaker 1: You know. Of course my payment was a little bit higher.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Clim was like, he's lived, he has a place to
- 7:02Speaker 1: sleep at night, that's his payment. Like I love, I love, well,
- 7:08Speaker 1: you know the thing about it. And thank you guys
- 7:10Speaker 1: for calling uh money making conversation because I always like
- 7:13Speaker 1: to talk about power couples because I think it's important
- 7:17Speaker 1: that how you relate, how these transitions, how to how
- 7:21Speaker 1: to how the family dynamic work, especially when you have children. Now, Clint,
- 7:26Speaker 1: let's let's the book started off with your story. First,
- 7:29Speaker 1: tell a little everybody a little bit about you, and
- 7:30Speaker 1: then Dian, I'm gonna go to you, and then we're
- 7:32Speaker 1: gonna journey through the book. Just certain little highlights that
- 7:35Speaker 1: I really thought that were inspirational to me because I
- 7:38Speaker 1: always like to believe that when I read good books,
- 7:40Speaker 1: and this is a very good book, you learn something
- 7:43Speaker 1: from it. It opens your eyes and it allows you
- 7:45Speaker 1: to appreciate other people's success story and not just your own.
- 7:48Speaker 1: That's the purpose of money making conversations. So Clint, start
- 7:51Speaker 1: with your story, my friend, before we get down to
- 7:53Speaker 1: wing stop and I get hongry because this is I'm
- 7:55Speaker 1: gonna just to tell everybody else, this is an interview.
- 7:57Speaker 1: You're gonna get home gry in this interview because I'm
- 7:59Speaker 1: just saying I'm asently a restaurant tour so that is
- 8:06Speaker 1: not the case. That's the last fifteen years of my life.
- 8:08Speaker 1: But I'm a serial entrepreneur though though since eighteen. I
- 8:12Speaker 1: started off in the financial service industry with insurance, investments,
- 8:16Speaker 1: real estate and loans, in which I still do now.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I started my own company after being UH with UH
- 8:25Speaker 1: company Ao Williams Primerica for seven years. I was a
- 8:29Speaker 1: reasoned by his president with them. I started on my
- 8:33Speaker 1: own in ninety nine. Me and another r VP we
- 8:37Speaker 1: you know, decided to team up and we started our
- 8:39Speaker 1: own investment advisory group. So we did that in ninety
- 8:43Speaker 1: nine and it just grew to UH what what it
- 8:47Speaker 1: is today. But during that period of time, we looked
- 8:50Speaker 1: at opportunities because the real estate market was booming in
- 8:54Speaker 1: the early two thousand's. Anybody that could fog Americans could
- 8:57Speaker 1: buy a house, you know. So you said, hey, you know,
- 9:01Speaker 1: let's go ahead and get this money. And you just
- 9:04Speaker 1: come to a point in time where being a financial
- 9:06Speaker 1: planner financial advisor, you say, okay, this can't be forever.
- 9:10Speaker 1: It has to have some type of ending. So we
- 9:14Speaker 1: wanted to go ahead and diversal five. We had you know,
- 9:17Speaker 1: nine pieces of property as the book shows, um, you know,
- 9:20Speaker 1: including our primary residents. But we still needed some other
- 9:23Speaker 1: business that was going to generate cash flow. My wife
- 9:26Speaker 1: and I weren't entrepreneurs as far as in the restaurant business,
- 9:30Speaker 1: but we were foodies, so we already knew what good
- 9:34Speaker 1: food was. And in Bakersfield, which my wife is born
- 9:38Speaker 1: and rayed, she'll tell her story about that, but in
- 9:40Speaker 1: Bakersfield there was an opportunity. Uh as far as well,
- 9:45Speaker 1: there was opportunity. It wasn't really too many restaurants besides
- 9:48Speaker 1: your McDonald's and your your your, So we were like, okay,
- 9:54Speaker 1: what can we do? We love this concept, you know,
- 9:58Speaker 1: but uh it's wide open. Don't know anything about you know,
- 10:01Speaker 1: being a restaurant to a restaurant. So we we had,
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know, uh, money's available to to invest in something.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And there, you know, we just started to to do
- 10:11Speaker 1: our research and uh, you know, like they say, a
- 10:15Speaker 1: star was born, a light bulb went off, and we
- 10:19Speaker 1: you know, just jumped all in. Well you kind of
- 10:24Speaker 1: yet you had Diana, Okay, she had this great county job. Okay,
- 10:28Speaker 1: so that's right, So she really so don't say she
- 10:32Speaker 1: y'all jumped on in because she was in over that.
- 10:34Speaker 1: She had those benefits, she had that regular check. She
- 10:37Speaker 1: respected your your serial entrepreneur background, and you had love
- 10:42Speaker 1: for you, but that regular check was was was was
- 10:45Speaker 1: holding her and sold the household down. Absolutely absolutely so.
- 10:50Speaker 1: So I love how you presented your story. Now I
- 10:53Speaker 1: want to slide over to m MS nine and the five.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Lewis okay over here, it's been nine to five. Let
- 11:01Speaker 1: me sell you something. Um, I you know Clint and
- 11:07Speaker 1: the thing is, and even in the book we talked
- 11:08Speaker 1: about that we knew each other before we even got me.
- 11:11Speaker 1: You know, he had been divorced, I have been engaged
- 11:14Speaker 1: in a long relationship that didn't go well. Um, So
- 11:17Speaker 1: I knew he had that boss mentality. I knew that
- 11:20Speaker 1: he was an entrepreneur. You know, he was signing all
- 11:23Speaker 1: of us nineteen year olds up at nineteen years old
- 11:26Speaker 1: for life insurance. Right, you're eighteen and you're signing up
- 11:31Speaker 1: all your nineteen year old friends about life insurance. So
- 11:33Speaker 1: I knew he had that that boss mentality. Um, but
- 11:36Speaker 1: there was still I was locked into the county. You know,
- 11:40Speaker 1: that was where you were sure, and we're gonna have insurance.
- 11:42Speaker 1: We have two small babies. He had just left Primerica
- 11:46Speaker 1: and decided to branch off on his own. So I'm like,
- 11:49Speaker 1: I gotta stay locked in. I need to know that
- 11:51Speaker 1: on the fifteen and the thirties, literally at midnight, that
- 11:54Speaker 1: my money is in the bank right. Um. So he's
- 11:58Speaker 1: out there, you know, making it happen for us and
- 12:00Speaker 1: the insurance world. And and it was rough. It was
- 12:03Speaker 1: rough when he when he walked away, you know, from
- 12:05Speaker 1: from prim America. Um, But I felt that as long
- 12:09Speaker 1: as we do it together, I'm really good. Like whatever
- 12:12Speaker 1: we do, I just strongly believe that whatever we did,
- 12:15Speaker 1: we had to do it together, even in working different professions.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Long as when we came home at night, we talked
- 12:21Speaker 1: about finance together. We talked about the money losses and
- 12:24Speaker 1: the money gains together. We always kept that line of
- 12:28Speaker 1: communication open um. But I just we we looked at
- 12:32Speaker 1: the opportunity. I said, Okay, we have all this money
- 12:34Speaker 1: coming in for him for his real estate, and it's
- 12:38Speaker 1: doing great, but we don't want to just go blow
- 12:40Speaker 1: it on a bunch of jet skis and and you know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: and and all of the material things, which I do
- 12:45Speaker 1: like nice things, don't get me wrong, but I felt
- 12:48Speaker 1: like this is too much money to not have something
- 12:51Speaker 1: else that we should be investing in. Um. And we tripped,
- 12:55Speaker 1: you know, vacations or travel to bakers for so much
- 12:58Speaker 1: to see my family. There was us that emptiness of
- 13:01Speaker 1: not having any food selections. After about ten o'clock. You know,
- 13:04Speaker 1: it's a little small country town, Um about two hours
- 13:07Speaker 1: south I mean north of l A. So we were like,
- 13:10Speaker 1: there's no food places out here. If we bring anything
- 13:13Speaker 1: to town, we should bring food. And hence to begin
- 13:17Speaker 1: the restaurant you know journey. And I went and set
- 13:20Speaker 1: in the Wingstope parking lot, okay, the one that was
- 13:23Speaker 1: not too far from my house, and I counted the
- 13:24Speaker 1: people coming in and out of their right, Like, if
- 13:27Speaker 1: we're gonna go big, we need to know what we're doing,
- 13:29Speaker 1: what we're talking about. Even though we don't know the
- 13:31Speaker 1: restaurant business, we need to know the restaurant company that
- 13:34Speaker 1: we're about to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars and
- 13:39Speaker 1: time and time. And we reached out to them. They
- 13:42Speaker 1: didn't respond, So guess what we called a plane and
- 13:45Speaker 1: knocked on their door and was like, yeah, we left
- 13:47Speaker 1: you a few messages in some emails y'all to the answer,
- 13:49Speaker 1: but we're ready to move. What's up? You know? You
- 13:53Speaker 1: know the interesting thing about your story and also Clinch
- 13:55Speaker 1: stories that you know, it's it's a story that the
- 13:59Speaker 1: book that title says, it's faith. What you talk about
- 14:02Speaker 1: a lot how important faith is and your decision making
- 14:05Speaker 1: because you have scriptures throughout the book and at the
- 14:07Speaker 1: end of each chapter, and your family, not only just
- 14:11Speaker 1: your immediate family, but your sisterhood, you know, your lifelowe
- 14:15Speaker 1: brotherhood that you have that keeps you focused and keeps
- 14:18Speaker 1: you a line there, Clint, and then all of a sudden,
- 14:21Speaker 1: the franchise and I just you know the thing, and
- 14:24Speaker 1: that's something that African Americans need to understand the opportunities.
- 14:28Speaker 1: And that's really what really drove the whole plan for
- 14:32Speaker 1: me to say, I love this book because as you
- 14:35Speaker 1: as you as both of you noted earlier that you
- 14:38Speaker 1: did your research on this type of book previously, just
- 14:41Speaker 1: like you did your research sitting in the wings stop
- 14:43Speaker 1: parking lot. Is their book out there about this for
- 14:46Speaker 1: couples and how do the entrepreneurs? Is that book out
- 14:50Speaker 1: there especially for black couples, so and just we're gonna
- 14:52Speaker 1: wrap up this break here, but before we leave Clinton,
- 14:55Speaker 1: why was it important to write Faith, Family, and Franchise Well?
- 15:00Speaker 1: As a financial advisor, I knew that a lot of
- 15:03Speaker 1: people didn't have the tools and the wheldwfall how to
- 15:06Speaker 1: win the money game. I was fortunate and blessed in
- 15:09Speaker 1: my profession to understand the inner workings of money and business.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And in our Christian community, communical community as well as
- 15:17Speaker 1: as us as as people of color, we didn't have
- 15:20Speaker 1: those insights. They don't have buildings in our communities, you know,
- 15:24Speaker 1: Mr Lanch, you know Charles Swab, They're not there, you know.
- 15:27Speaker 1: But I wanted to teach people, and that's the whole
- 15:30Speaker 1: foundation of my practice now, how to go ahead and
- 15:32Speaker 1: win the money game. And I have the insights, and
- 15:35Speaker 1: I wanted to share it with all the good and
- 15:37Speaker 1: the bad, because a lot of people show you all
- 15:39Speaker 1: the glow, don't show you, you know, what I went
- 15:42Speaker 1: through bankruptcy. I was, you know, maybe you're about to
- 15:44Speaker 1: lose my home. But we wanted to put it all
- 15:47Speaker 1: out there on our personal side as well as the
- 15:49Speaker 1: business side, so that people can relate and hopefully pay action,
- 15:52Speaker 1: because if they use these principles, they will succeed. That's
- 15:55Speaker 1: that's it. It's finally here, the season of celebration in
- 16:00Speaker 1: and no matter how you celebrate with family and friends,

- 18:01Speaker 1: I used to work for IBM, and I know when
- 18:03Speaker 1: I got that job at IBM, and I told people
- 18:05Speaker 1: are gonna leave IBM to tell my pursuer career as
- 18:08Speaker 1: a stand up comedian. They looked at me like I
- 18:10Speaker 1: was crazy because of the fact. But that wasn't my passion.
- 18:13Speaker 1: That wasn't you know. I was just smart enough to
- 18:15Speaker 1: get a degree in math and smart enough to be
- 18:18Speaker 1: able to sit down and fill out an application and
- 18:20Speaker 1: get a great job at IBM. But it was a
- 18:22Speaker 1: lot of fear in me when I left, because it
- 18:25Speaker 1: was a lot of uncertainty. And I really love the
- 18:28Speaker 1: fact that you had Clint to lean on to guide
- 18:30Speaker 1: you through that uncertainty to leave your county job. So
- 18:35Speaker 1: tell us about how it all started, and and and
- 18:38Speaker 1: and very true. I I just always had kind of,
- 18:43Speaker 1: uh more of a pessimistic attitude about things, right. So
- 18:46Speaker 1: Clint has always been that's part of our faith journey.
- 18:49Speaker 1: He's been the one that has that has more faith
- 18:52Speaker 1: than I've had many occasions, right, But he encourages me
- 18:55Speaker 1: and pulls me along the faith journey for me to say, Okay,
- 18:58Speaker 1: take the chance, take the chance. But I have been
- 19:01Speaker 1: with l A County as a social worker since so
- 19:05Speaker 1: when we opened up Wingstop, I'm like, yeah, I think
- 19:09Speaker 1: one day I'll leave, but I don't have no plan
- 19:11Speaker 1: as on licuse. I'm soon because again, you know, having
- 19:15Speaker 1: that that definitive check on the fifteenth and the thirties
- 19:18Speaker 1: at midnight, I knew that there was money in my account,
- 19:21Speaker 1: you knew. I knew that if I went to the
- 19:22Speaker 1: doctor with the you know co pay of about seven dollars,
- 19:26Speaker 1: me and my children and and Clinton as well would
- 19:28Speaker 1: be treated and and have access to medical attention if
- 19:31Speaker 1: we needed it. So that carries a whole lot of weight,
- 19:34Speaker 1: you know, like I don't know about this wingstop is
- 19:38Speaker 1: doing good. I hear you. We opened it up, But
- 19:40Speaker 1: let me see if I can maneuver and do both.
- 19:42Speaker 1: And for years I did both. For years, I worked
- 19:45Speaker 1: Monday through Friday, would get off work at four o'clock,
- 19:49Speaker 1: get home, packed the kids up, load up the car,
- 19:51Speaker 1: and we were on the road to Bakersfield. Stay there Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
- 19:55Speaker 1: put the kids in pajamas in Bakersfield, just to drive
- 19:58Speaker 1: back two hours back to l so that I can
- 20:00Speaker 1: return to that job on Monday, you know, as a
- 20:03Speaker 1: social worker. And I did that for seven years before
- 20:08Speaker 1: I actually took the leap of faith and said Okay,
- 20:11Speaker 1: this is it. And it took me a while to
- 20:13Speaker 1: get to that point, but at some point you have
- 20:16Speaker 1: to just trust in yourself. You have to trust in
- 20:18Speaker 1: and have faith in all the effort that you put
- 20:22Speaker 1: in to make this work, to be all in, because
- 20:24Speaker 1: I think sometimes if you have something else that's holding
- 20:27Speaker 1: on in the back, you won't just go all in
- 20:30Speaker 1: because it's a little safety net. So how far can
- 20:32Speaker 1: you really go? How much can you really grow if
- 20:35Speaker 1: you don't ever take a leap of faith of saying, Okay,
- 20:38Speaker 1: I gotta forget those things that are behind me and
- 20:39Speaker 1: pressed forward. But I have the same listen, Rashaana had
- 20:43Speaker 1: the same conversations. People were looking at me like I
- 20:46Speaker 1: was crazy. They told me that I was crazy when
- 20:49Speaker 1: I said we're opening the wingstop or the wingstop back
- 20:55Speaker 1: to a black person. Black people came to comprehend that
- 21:00Speaker 1: what I'm saying, and that's and that's the whole thing
- 21:02Speaker 1: about what we're talking about on this interview. It's comprehending.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And that's why I love the fact that when you
- 21:09Speaker 1: was making this decision. I always tell people, if you
- 21:10Speaker 1: want to be a doctor, don't talk to a mechanic. Okay,
- 21:13Speaker 1: so you got the right mentors, you know, and so
- 21:17Speaker 1: you had the right mentor and clip, Okay, when you
- 21:20Speaker 1: when the decision to become an entrepreneur, you just went
- 21:22Speaker 1: to your mentor. Okay, right there, clip what your thinking
- 21:24Speaker 1: and and you looked at how he thought about He
- 21:27Speaker 1: had the highs and the lows. He had a clear
- 21:29Speaker 1: understanding that it is workers involved. And both of you
- 21:33Speaker 1: guys have that high work ethic. And that's really important.
- 21:36Speaker 1: And when I was when I was reading the book
- 21:38Speaker 1: because because the book is great, everybody, and this is
- 21:40Speaker 1: why the book is great, because they they're willing to
- 21:43Speaker 1: tell you their flaws. So I always tell people I
- 21:46Speaker 1: read books and people kind of like gloss over their
- 21:48Speaker 1: mistakes and well, you know, like graduating from college and
- 21:52Speaker 1: I was famous, huh. Because in the chapter one, what
- 22:00Speaker 1: you call them lesson is the who are we chapter?
- 22:02Speaker 1: You know, Clint tells who he is, then Diana, you
- 22:05Speaker 1: tell who you are, and then you can ask us
- 22:07Speaker 1: for our background, and so you start setting the stage
- 22:11Speaker 1: of of and then the most personal chapter is chapters
- 22:15Speaker 1: lesson two, indeed, and that's when you you know, you
- 22:18Speaker 1: guys were always friends in the church, and then all
- 22:21Speaker 1: of a sudden But like you said, you had that
- 22:23Speaker 1: three relationship where that you kept putting off there the
- 22:27Speaker 1: day and used doing the catering to the bride maid dresses,
- 22:31Speaker 1: and finally you know this ain't happening. By by this
- 22:35Speaker 1: ain't happen. And then you know Clint, you know he
- 22:38Speaker 1: he was married, but he didn't have time for marriage.
- 22:41Speaker 1: You know, you know that that was key right there
- 22:43Speaker 1: then that I went through that journey too. Just because
- 22:45Speaker 1: you can buy the car, the house, you still have
- 22:49Speaker 1: to have time. Because it's called communication, folks. Communication, And
- 22:54Speaker 1: that's what chapter two, because it talks about the divorce,
- 22:56Speaker 1: it talks about getting together, and it talks about them
- 22:59Speaker 1: being church people. But I'm gonna tell you. Let me
- 23:01Speaker 1: tell you all about these two church people right here.
- 23:03Speaker 1: They get busy though they star getting busy busy. You
- 23:08Speaker 1: came along because they were getting busy, busy, busy. Yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 1: that's true. And that's what I'm talking about, willing to
- 23:18Speaker 1: share their story. And that's and so it really it
- 23:22Speaker 1: all comes together for me really in uh chapter four,
- 23:27Speaker 1: because we all have these journeys, we all have these dreams.
- 23:31Speaker 1: But what happens when the dream kind of crashes or
- 23:36Speaker 1: become a nightmare. And that's uh, the stock market, because
- 23:40Speaker 1: I wanted to talk about that because you're kind of
- 23:42Speaker 1: dealing with it now, the crashing the stock market two eight.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Now you have the pandemic of tell me about that. Well.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I think the best fold in the book comes from
- 23:55Speaker 1: my beautiful and lovely wife and it tells the story aboutthing.
- 24:00Speaker 1: We had already lost almost everything that you can lose.
- 24:03Speaker 1: They picked up our car. We have the MERCEDESES five Hunter.
- 24:06Speaker 1: They picked that up in front of my house. But
- 24:08Speaker 1: we were, you know, in that period of time or
- 24:10Speaker 1: transitioning where you know, we didn't know if we're gonna
- 24:13Speaker 1: be able to keep our own home where we lived
- 24:16Speaker 1: at we already lost everything else. And she comes up
- 24:18Speaker 1: with a with asked me a question, Hey, I know
- 24:22Speaker 1: you say that we we okay, just hang on and
- 24:24Speaker 1: you're doing good. You always, you know, say it's gonna
- 24:27Speaker 1: be all right, baby, But I just want to know
- 24:29Speaker 1: are we painting? Are we packing? And that just resonated.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I was like, hey, okay, so I guess if we're
- 24:37Speaker 1: paid me, that means that we're staying or we're gonna
- 24:39Speaker 1: pack this stuffer up and we're gonna just go and
- 24:41Speaker 1: move out with the babies. And uh, that was where
- 24:45Speaker 1: it kind of came home to me, where Okay, let's
- 24:49Speaker 1: go ahead and really sit down and see how we're
- 24:51Speaker 1: gonna make it through, because we had already, you know,
- 24:55Speaker 1: look at everything, but I also knew how to count
- 24:57Speaker 1: our blessings. We had the store that was still and
- 25:00Speaker 1: we already lost the store, and we had our house.
- 25:03Speaker 1: So even though that it looked like our our walls
- 25:07Speaker 1: and everything like that, we're crashing, we still were doing
- 25:10Speaker 1: better than most people can say during that period of
- 25:13Speaker 1: time in the and in the recession. We had a
- 25:15Speaker 1: place to live, and we had a business that was
- 25:17Speaker 1: doors who were open war and making any money. We
- 25:19Speaker 1: had everybody knocking on our doors and trying to tap
- 25:22Speaker 1: our tail, but we were still we were still open
- 25:25Speaker 1: and we were keeping up pay roll and rent was
- 25:30Speaker 1: the only things that we made sure that took care
- 25:32Speaker 1: of anybody else. As far as vendors, we switched chicken
- 25:35Speaker 1: vendors about three or four times just to try to
- 25:38Speaker 1: catch up on one because we had an outfend emvoice
- 25:41Speaker 1: on the other. But we made it through that period
- 25:43Speaker 1: of time, and and I only believe that because we
- 25:48Speaker 1: kind of came together and we were willing to go
- 25:50Speaker 1: ahead and and and and and figure it out together.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Then we were able to make it through the other side.
- 25:57Speaker 1: That's now we have the pandemic unexpected. Nobody saw it coming,
- 26:03Speaker 1: which calls you the pivot. Let's talk about that experience
- 26:06Speaker 1: and dealing with that, and then I want to go
- 26:08Speaker 1: back to back to this chap to talk about something
- 26:11Speaker 1: that felt was very neat, called relationships, but talk to
- 26:14Speaker 1: us about the pandemic and dealing with it. Nobody saw
- 26:17Speaker 1: it coming, Diana. Um, we didn't see it coming, you know.
- 26:22Speaker 1: I think our first glimpse of it was when we
- 26:23Speaker 1: were actually down in Atlanta, UM and had just left
- 26:27Speaker 1: our son thinking that, you know, he's gonna be finishing
- 26:29Speaker 1: this semester down at moor House and we go on
- 26:32Speaker 1: the airport and the airport is like empty, right, Remember
- 26:35Speaker 1: it was like nobody in the airport. I'm like, Okay,
- 26:37Speaker 1: something is really going down because there's no travelers here
- 26:40Speaker 1: in the airport. Um. But the beauty of it. What
- 26:43Speaker 1: we didn't know then when we invested into Wingstop was
- 26:47Speaker 1: that their concept is built on takeout. Like the concept
- 26:51Speaker 1: that has always been on take the wings home for
- 26:53Speaker 1: you know, with you to go. So in this pandemic,
- 26:57Speaker 1: on this side of the restaurant business, we're at really thriving.
- 27:01Speaker 1: We're actually thriving. Our numbers have even increased, UM, and
- 27:05Speaker 1: we reduced our hours. It is changing how we're gonna
- 27:08Speaker 1: do things. We've had to change and reevaluate how things
- 27:12Speaker 1: are set up as far as how we're servicing our
- 27:14Speaker 1: customers with social distancing and and we're in protective masks.
- 27:18Speaker 1: But in the restaurant business, you're already kind of sanitized,
- 27:20Speaker 1: and you should be or you shouldn't be in the
- 27:22Speaker 1: restaurant because the right you should already be taking of
- 27:26Speaker 1: health precautions anyway, UM, as far as how you do business.
- 27:31Speaker 1: So we were actually in the goal mind business of
- 27:34Speaker 1: Wingstop because it was always set up as a carry out,
- 27:37Speaker 1: so it hasn't really affected us. Now on the fat
- 27:39Speaker 1: burger side a little different. UM. We have a location
- 27:43Speaker 1: that's that Arizona State campus which is closed and it's
- 27:46Speaker 1: still closed because school isn't in UM. So we had
- 27:49Speaker 1: to close three of those and we were able to
- 27:52Speaker 1: keep one open. But right now, you know, three of
- 27:54Speaker 1: them are open and one is still closed. So we
- 27:58Speaker 1: we know what it is to come through. But I
- 27:59Speaker 1: think going through it in oh eight, we already saw
- 28:02Speaker 1: what that looked like, and we vowed to never be
- 28:04Speaker 1: back in that situation. So we reevaluate how our spending is,
- 28:09Speaker 1: how we save, how we make sure that we we
- 28:12Speaker 1: invest in more than just one thing. Don't have all
- 28:14Speaker 1: your you know, apples or whatever oranges in one basket.
- 28:17Speaker 1: You know, you want to you know, diversify, And we
- 28:20Speaker 1: looked at that and every since that, coming out of
- 28:23Speaker 1: that recession of oh eight, we just are thinking changed.
- 28:27Speaker 1: It shifted to where we wanted to have, you know,
- 28:29Speaker 1: multiple upon multiple up on multiple strings of income and
- 28:33Speaker 1: make our portfolio diversified. And I think that's what has
- 28:38Speaker 1: saved us right now is because of that. You know,
- 28:41Speaker 1: I wanted to bring up something in in that chapter.
- 28:43Speaker 1: It's like relationships. I always tell people, you know, always, uh,
- 28:48Speaker 1: you walk away about somebody shaking their hands with a
- 28:51Speaker 1: good because uh, the county job came back into your
- 28:55Speaker 1: life and with two thousand and eight, and it was
- 28:58Speaker 1: it only came back into your life because you left
- 29:01Speaker 1: in good, good stead. It was an incredible worker, even
- 29:04Speaker 1: though you knew you were spending a lot of hours
- 29:07Speaker 1: with your franchise the wing stop. It didn't diminish your
- 29:10Speaker 1: work ethic at that location, and it came back to
- 29:14Speaker 1: save you from two thousand nine and two thousand thirteen
- 29:16Speaker 1: financially give you guys a steady check and and gave
- 29:20Speaker 1: you guys a that health benefit that you needed in
- 29:23Speaker 1: that fifteen and thirty check that you could count on
- 29:26Speaker 1: from that period. So talk to us about relationships, because
- 29:30Speaker 1: business relationships and all those things that are important that
- 29:33Speaker 1: a lot of people tend to kind of like downplay,
- 29:36Speaker 1: but it's important, and and and and and it's very important.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And to speak on the time that I left the
- 29:43Speaker 1: county and then came back, it was because of the
- 29:46Speaker 1: relationships I had established. Um, I have respect there. They
- 29:50Speaker 1: respected me, I respected them. I appreciated my county job,
- 29:53Speaker 1: and I was able to make those phone calls and
- 29:55Speaker 1: say and then humble myself. I didn't. I did not
- 29:58Speaker 1: return back to the any job with this arrogance of oh,
- 30:02Speaker 1: I have a wingstop. You know that's you know, I'm
- 30:05Speaker 1: a I'm a restaurant owner and you guys should you know,
- 30:08Speaker 1: listen to me, and and I'm like, no, I stayed
- 30:10Speaker 1: in the humble position. I went back to social work. Um,
- 30:13Speaker 1: they had me on a couple of special assignments because
- 30:15Speaker 1: I was that kind of a worker, you know, I
- 30:17Speaker 1: was a great worker. Um, so they had me on
- 30:19Speaker 1: special assignments. But it was how I left was why
- 30:23Speaker 1: they welcomed me back. And when I left the for
- 30:26Speaker 1: the last time, never to return again. Praise Jesus. Even then,
- 30:32Speaker 1: I didn't walk out of there with you know, yeah,
- 30:35Speaker 1: we're getting ready to open our second locations and deuces.
- 30:38Speaker 1: I never want to see you people again. I still,
- 30:41Speaker 1: you know, remain in contact and respectful to them and
- 30:44Speaker 1: always showed appreciation for the opportunity to come back. And
- 30:48Speaker 1: we do that and everything we do. UM, we tease
- 30:51Speaker 1: my mom and Clint mom about them. They never meet
- 30:54Speaker 1: a stranger, like everybody they know. The next time we
- 30:56Speaker 1: hear they see them, it's like they've known them for years.
- 30:58Speaker 1: You know, even our friends, they've gotten their telephone numbers
- 31:01Speaker 1: and talk to them. I'll talk to your mom. I'm like,
- 31:03Speaker 1: how should get your number? We had those examples of
- 31:07Speaker 1: what it means to build relationship. Our our marriage community
- 31:11Speaker 1: is strong. We sit around and we take vacations with
- 31:14Speaker 1: those couples. That we respected that have a few you know,
- 31:18Speaker 1: more years on us, UM to to say this is
- 31:20Speaker 1: how we kind of navigated. We go to them like mentorship.
- 31:24Speaker 1: We go to them on how to raise the children,
- 31:26Speaker 1: you know, what to do when they go to college?
- 31:28Speaker 1: What what did you you know, what mistakes that you
- 31:30Speaker 1: made that you can help us avoid? UM. And that's
- 31:33Speaker 1: been the center of who we are even in the book.
- 31:36Speaker 1: And we talked about when we dated, UM, we dated
- 31:39Speaker 1: in big circles of other folks that had the same mindset,
- 31:44Speaker 1: that wanted something out of life other than just you
- 31:48Speaker 1: know what society say. We should have an opportunity to know.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I want to close out with you on the click
- 31:56Speaker 1: a couple of thoughts. And first of all, the book
- 31:58Speaker 1: is fantastic, but it was in the same chapter lesson
- 32:01Speaker 1: for that we're talking about. It was the five seeds
- 32:04Speaker 1: for financial competency that can help you prepare to own
- 32:07Speaker 1: own a business. Can you close it out? Just tell
- 32:10Speaker 1: us about that and uh, and thank you both for
- 32:14Speaker 1: coming on my show. UM the storytelling. In fact, I
- 32:17Speaker 1: want to bring you back because we haven't even really
- 32:19Speaker 1: tapped into the book. You know what I'm saying, because
- 32:23Speaker 1: you know, I know the book, you know, but but
- 32:25Speaker 1: I don't want But I'm just recommending things that I
- 32:28Speaker 1: loved about it. That's why I started from chapter eight
- 32:30Speaker 1: by family. See see see see they talked about family
- 32:33Speaker 1: in the whole way. But when you when you when
- 32:35Speaker 1: you're bringing up your children, and you're letting your children
- 32:38Speaker 1: understand the value of hard work, letting them see that
- 32:41Speaker 1: this is you can own this, you can be this.
- 32:43Speaker 1: You can walk around and and this can be you.
- 32:46Speaker 1: You you can walk by a store and that's your
- 32:48Speaker 1: name is part of the ownership of that store. But
- 32:52Speaker 1: but cli let's talk about the five seeds for financial competency. Absolutely,
- 32:57Speaker 1: so our book is called Faith the Franchise. But we
- 33:01Speaker 1: don't want to alienate people as far as the business.
- 33:03Speaker 1: They don't have to get a franchise. That's just our journey,
- 33:05Speaker 1: that's just what we've done. It can also be kind
- 33:07Speaker 1: of substituted or or or or sending them for finance.
- 33:13Speaker 1: That's our background, that's my background. So we like the
- 33:16Speaker 1: franchise aspect of it because it gives you a business plan,
- 33:19Speaker 1: It gives you a template that's something that is already
- 33:21Speaker 1: supposed to be proven successful. If you do your homework, right,
- 33:24Speaker 1: But if you're looking at just a business in general,
- 33:27Speaker 1: an investor or a bank is going to want to
- 33:30Speaker 1: know these five things. And it's and we call them
- 33:33Speaker 1: the five seeds. It's your character or your worthwhile person,
- 33:36Speaker 1: your credit. You know, are you trustworthy with money capital?
- 33:41Speaker 1: Do you have any money or investment. They want to
- 33:43Speaker 1: make sure that you have some skin in the game.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Collateral obviously that could be you know, piece of real estate,
- 33:48Speaker 1: ors or property. Also as far as the business assets,
- 33:51Speaker 1: and then your capacity. That was the thing that we
- 33:53Speaker 1: were lacking. We weren't restaurant tours. We didn't have the
- 33:55Speaker 1: capacity or the resumes to basically say that, hey, if
- 33:59Speaker 1: you give us the million dollar franchise, we're gonna be
- 34:02Speaker 1: able to go ahead and run it successfully. But d
- 34:05Speaker 1: went the training. I kind of learned by hard knocks,
- 34:08Speaker 1: you know, in the business. He went to a train
- 34:10Speaker 1: in Texas for three weeks to get the capacity issue going.
- 34:14Speaker 1: So that way you can have the tools to really
- 34:17Speaker 1: win at the trade or the profession that you're getting
- 34:19Speaker 1: involved in, and you know that will lead into other
- 34:24Speaker 1: things that you can know about yourself to to really
- 34:27Speaker 1: be successful. And you have to put for the work
