- 1:31Speaker 1: making Conversation Ashley and Jaquavers Colman. Hey, how you doing?
- 1:36Speaker 1: My brothers? You to be off? How you? First of all,
- 1:40Speaker 1: thank you because of you know, I read the book
- 1:45Speaker 1: until I read the book, The Cartail seven Round Table
- 1:49Speaker 1: of the Bosses. And the thing about it is that
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know, if you want to quiz me, you know
- 1:55Speaker 1: you can quiz me. You know you don't know about
- 1:58Speaker 1: c J MO. You know we can't go in details.
- 2:01Speaker 1: But I know, Breeze, you tell him. I tell what
- 2:04Speaker 1: they've been when him in jail. I can tell you
- 2:06Speaker 1: about the Dominican Republic. I'm just throwing out some stuff
- 2:09Speaker 1: to let them know. I know, you know what I'm saying.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You know, you wanna talk about that drug, I wanna
- 2:14Speaker 1: talk about my man goes hey, don't don't, don't. Don't
- 2:17Speaker 1: go there with me. Let y'all know. I did my
- 2:20Speaker 1: homework and the and the beauty of the book I'm
- 2:22Speaker 1: gonna tell you about because I got the book, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 1: on Saturday, and I read it all day Sunday, and
- 2:29Speaker 1: it was a good read. It was a good read,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and I wanted before we even get into detail about
- 2:34Speaker 1: the book, I'm just read this, this statement that I
- 2:37Speaker 1: pulled offline about the book. The Sag of Love, Loyalty,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and Crime continues in the next explosive book in the
- 2:45Speaker 1: Cartel series, from the minds of New York Times bestselling
- 2:49Speaker 1: authors Astley and to Qualis. After the tragic and Blood
- 2:53Speaker 1: into the Cartel's Rain, Carter is forced into isolation to
- 2:57Speaker 1: evade to law. With his wife facing federal largest and
- 3:00Speaker 1: his dear brother six ft under, Carter has never been
- 3:03Speaker 1: more alone, his empire at his feet, and there's no
- 3:07Speaker 1: idea how to rebuild his kingdom. The only thing that
- 3:10Speaker 1: is certain is that he has to stay out of
- 3:11Speaker 1: the way. And off the radar of the faiths until
- 3:14Speaker 1: he can, until he can figure out how to get
- 3:16Speaker 1: his lady out of prison. Her freedom is guaranteed. Provided
- 3:19Speaker 1: car to help create and distribute a drug that would
- 3:22Speaker 1: take the streets by storm. Rubbing elbows with the most notorious,
- 3:26Speaker 1: ruthless leaders of the underworld will get him what he wants,
- 3:30Speaker 1: but he can win it, but he doesn't know whether
- 3:32Speaker 1: he can win the game or murderer or money. That's
- 3:36Speaker 1: what this book about. See see see I'm gonna tell
- 3:39Speaker 1: you the reason I read that because I'm a fan
- 3:42Speaker 1: of knockles. Have have y'all seen that? Seriously? Yeah? Okay,
- 3:47Speaker 1: come on now see see see So you know when
- 3:50Speaker 1: I read this book May, I was going, man, y'all, yeah,
- 3:55Speaker 1: y'all been okay, First of all, I'm a I'm a
- 3:58Speaker 1: look site. Let me calm down the start let's let's
- 4:00Speaker 1: start from again. In Flip, Michigan. Yes, you know you fifteen?
- 4:05Speaker 1: You sixteen? Was the police stop you? Okay? Harassing you? Now, Ashley,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you noticed this? You see all this going down? The
- 4:16Speaker 1: police accused you of dealing in drugs? Correct Quavers? Yeah? Yeah,
- 4:21Speaker 1: they was only I was actually surfing the undercover agent
- 4:25Speaker 1: for about two weeks. So, um, yeah, it was the
- 4:28Speaker 1: open play for the underplay. They were setting me up
- 4:31Speaker 1: now now but it was all wrong. But that's so
- 4:34Speaker 1: after they let you go, Ashley, you called him correct. Yeah,
- 4:39Speaker 1: he tossed his package in my bushes, and I thought
- 4:42Speaker 1: so I went and got it out of the bushes
- 4:44Speaker 1: before the police searched them, and then I called him.
- 4:47Speaker 1: We had a mutual friend, right right right, it's just
- 4:50Speaker 1: like a book. We actually used this. I know, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I know all that get to my interview. I got
- 4:59Speaker 1: my research on both of y'all. I'm not gonna come
- 5:01Speaker 1: on this show and act like I don't know who
- 5:03Speaker 1: I'm talking to. Man, we appreciated my brother, but listen, Maye,
- 5:08Speaker 1: just it started the union that would last. Well. We
- 5:11Speaker 1: we've been together with sixteen years. Man. Um, I was
- 5:16Speaker 1: running from the cops, man, and she literally saved my life. Man.
- 5:18Speaker 1: She you know, she threw I'm sorry when I threw
- 5:22Speaker 1: what I had in the bushes, Man, she she picked
- 5:24Speaker 1: it up and she put it up for me for later.
- 5:26Speaker 1: So you know we're from Flint, Michigan, Rashaan Man, So
- 5:29Speaker 1: that means, you know, loyalty has to be earned. But
- 5:32Speaker 1: I don't love this girl because within the first day
- 5:35Speaker 1: I met her, she showed me loyalty and that's something
- 5:37Speaker 1: that I wasn't used to. You know that that kind
- 5:40Speaker 1: of started the friendship, and that friendship matured into a relationship,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and then later that relationship um turned into a partnership.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Man went together. You know, we were families. You know.
- 5:53Speaker 1: It's interesting, you know that because you know, you guys
- 5:56Speaker 1: from Flint, Michigan. Let's basically at inner city, and the
- 6:00Speaker 1: mind of that with with with a with a strong
- 6:02Speaker 1: literary sense, you know, because I you know, I tell
- 6:05Speaker 1: people like you know, when I came out of high school.
- 6:07Speaker 1: You know, I was an honor student and I took
- 6:09Speaker 1: all honors classes, but I didn't really care about English.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And I remember when I went to college, I had
- 6:14Speaker 1: to take remedial English to qualify because I didn't care.
- 6:18Speaker 1: I didn't care. I didn't know the subject verry now
- 6:20Speaker 1: and I didn't know the sequence of what would make
- 6:22Speaker 1: a sentence and the preposition and all those things because
- 6:25Speaker 1: I didn't realize the importance of it. And that's why
- 6:28Speaker 1: that's why it's important when I hear you guys, and
- 6:31Speaker 1: along the way in middle school English and literacy was
- 6:35Speaker 1: important because, like I said, when I was in middle school,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I read, you know, I read I read uh uh
- 6:41Speaker 1: Lord of the Rings when I was in middle school,
- 6:44Speaker 1: and that book was like nine hundred pages. And so
- 6:47Speaker 1: I I say that to say that you guys play
- 6:49Speaker 1: an important role. And that's one of the reasons I
- 6:51Speaker 1: brought you on the show and I hopefully become friends
- 6:53Speaker 1: and just constantly communicated on a regular basis, because it's
- 6:57Speaker 1: important that reading really is fundamental, man, absolutely absolutely, and
- 7:05Speaker 1: telling stories that you guys are telling. That's why I
- 7:07Speaker 1: want to let everybody know that, yeah, I'm a sitcom writer,
- 7:10Speaker 1: you guys are true storytellers. And that's really important because
- 7:14Speaker 1: when I was reading the book from the opening when
- 7:16Speaker 1: they're on the private jet and you know, I'm not
- 7:18Speaker 1: gonna tell a story because we're trying to sell books.
- 7:21Speaker 1: We're not trying to give away the book, you know,
- 7:24Speaker 1: you know, but all those things I'm just telling you guys.
- 7:26Speaker 1: When you read their books and they got they got
- 7:28Speaker 1: an interesting style because they do transitional time frames. You know,
- 7:32Speaker 1: you've been this time period and then they take you
- 7:34Speaker 1: back to to tell you the journey how that moment
- 7:38Speaker 1: came up to this point and and it's really interesting,
- 7:41Speaker 1: how did you guys develop your writing style? Um, well,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I finally believe that being a writer, you can't be
- 7:49Speaker 1: a writer without being a reader. First. First ate was
- 7:52Speaker 1: actually out of borders about borders by right, that's a precord.
- 7:57Speaker 1: You have to fall in love with storytelling in general, right,
- 8:00Speaker 1: And through doing that, we both really love to read
- 8:03Speaker 1: as young kids. So through doing that, we wanted to
- 8:07Speaker 1: write stories that people could relate to, that people could
- 8:11Speaker 1: find in just okay, when we were young, there were
- 8:14Speaker 1: no stories or characters that looked like us, that sounded
- 8:16Speaker 1: like us, or that we're from the areas. That we
- 8:19Speaker 1: wanted to change that landscape in literature. So now we're writing.
- 8:22Speaker 1: We're forty books in. We've contributed space on the shelves
- 8:26Speaker 1: by African American people for African American people. Right right,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I was reading this article. I've took some snippets. I
- 8:34Speaker 1: thought there's some very important articles. There's just New York
- 8:36Speaker 1: Times magazine article written in urban fiction or streetlet has
- 8:42Speaker 1: been snubbed by the publishing industry and scorned by the
- 8:45Speaker 1: black intellectuals. Yet these authors may just be the most
- 8:49Speaker 1: successful literary couple in America. So when I write that,
- 8:56Speaker 1: when I say that because I know as a writer,
- 8:58Speaker 1: as an entertainer, people can make judgment on people and
- 9:02Speaker 1: don't even know the the end goal and end goal
- 9:04Speaker 1: is about writing creative concepts and storylines that are relatable.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Isn't that correct? Yeah? Absolutely, man, see it is. I
- 9:13Speaker 1: love to use that analogy like the roles that grows
- 9:15Speaker 1: from concrete. When a person or a black intellectual looks
- 9:21Speaker 1: at this rose and they see all the torn pedals
- 9:24Speaker 1: and the thorns, they look at it as fa like
- 9:28Speaker 1: this ugly rose, but they do not take into the
- 9:31Speaker 1: count of tenacity of that roads to grow through that concrete.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And it's a reason why it has those broken petals
- 9:38Speaker 1: and thorns. And that's how we look at our style
- 9:41Speaker 1: of writing. They look at it like it's something that's
- 9:45Speaker 1: but needs a literature, but it's not. It's where we
- 9:49Speaker 1: came from. We're products of our environment and we made
- 9:52Speaker 1: it beautiful. Like at first they talked about it, but
- 9:55Speaker 1: then they began to like give us accolaides and of
- 10:00Speaker 1: what we were doing. There you go, that was the
- 10:02Speaker 1: plan from the beginning, man, There you go. We kept
- 10:05Speaker 1: on putting out quality product, um, and kept on being consistent,
- 10:09Speaker 1: and those sprowns begin to turn into the collapse. And um,
- 10:13Speaker 1: that's where we're at now. Man. We we're thirty two
- 10:15Speaker 1: years old, man, and wow, and we made history. Man,
- 10:19Speaker 1: We're gonna keep on home making it. You know, I'm
- 10:20Speaker 1: gonna tell you something. I don't know who the black
- 10:23Speaker 1: intellectual else, but I am a black intellectual. Do you
- 10:27Speaker 1: if there's a club out there, every shot McDonald's in
- 10:29Speaker 1: that club. Okay, you know I got em me sitting
- 10:34Speaker 1: on the shell I got I got image awards sitting
- 10:37Speaker 1: on my shell. I just sold four million books for HarperCollins.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I didn't put two blockbuster movies in the theater. I'm
- 10:45Speaker 1: gonna tell you, y'all, some young people don't ever let
- 10:48Speaker 1: nobody tell you who you are. Don't ever let nobody
- 10:52Speaker 1: tell you what you're exposed to do. It. Didn't understand
- 10:55Speaker 1: your journey, understand the shoes that you're walking. I'm telling you,
- 10:59Speaker 1: I picked that look up. I didn't put it down.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I went and got me a couple of sandwiches, and
- 11:04Speaker 1: I would eat my sandwiches, and and I put it down.
- 11:07Speaker 1: And my wife said, you don't watch the football game.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I didn't watch no football game on Sunday because because
- 11:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna just tell you something. I enjoyed the storytelling.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I enjoyed the and I'm gonna keep telling everybody because
- 11:20Speaker 1: now I gotta go back and read the series now,
- 11:22Speaker 1: because it's interesting in my life. Because you know, like
- 11:25Speaker 1: I told you, in middle school, I read, read, read,
- 11:29Speaker 1: and then when I got out of the middle school,
- 11:31Speaker 1: I was just running and racing and just dealing with stuff.
- 11:34Speaker 1: But man, y'all, you guys have brought me back into
- 11:36Speaker 1: the fold with this book. Man, we love it. Man,
- 11:40Speaker 1: that that means so much to We really appreciate you
- 11:43Speaker 1: taking up the time and really just understanding our writing
- 11:46Speaker 1: and reading it. Man, that means the world, said I
- 11:49Speaker 1: would just tell you something. You know, I want people
- 11:51Speaker 1: to understand this. We're gonna be right back because it's
- 11:53Speaker 1: going another break with the with the best. New York
- 11:56Speaker 1: Times is said the most accomplished and successful literary writing
- 12:01Speaker 1: couple in America. Be right back with more money making conversation.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Don't y'all go nowhere to be back with more money
- 12:10Speaker 1: making conversation on the phone. New York Times and labeled
- 12:14Speaker 1: them as the most successful literary couple in America and
- 12:17Speaker 1: they're doing everything and a hold of that matter on
- 12:19Speaker 1: the phone with Astling and Joe Craves Koba, you guys back, Yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I want to talk about this right quick. It was
- 12:28Speaker 1: read just about this deal you guys have you have
- 12:31Speaker 1: a deal you signed with Warner Brothers Studio at NBC
- 12:33Speaker 1: Universal to develop television projects. And you also agreed to
- 12:37Speaker 1: an audio exclusive deal with Audible, a company owned by
- 12:40Speaker 1: Amazon dot Com, A deal that's the first of his
- 12:43Speaker 1: kind with fiction writers. Okay, I yet now talk to
- 12:48Speaker 1: me about that. Uh, well, we're forty books in so
- 12:51Speaker 1: we're just looking for new ways to tell. It was
- 12:56Speaker 1: a um effected progression for us to move into television
- 12:59Speaker 1: and him absolutely when l A, we just found a
- 13:02Speaker 1: world of opportunities that we're just creatives out there that
- 13:05Speaker 1: we're willing to partner with us to our story to
- 13:10Speaker 1: the screen. Um. We were very lucky to link up
- 13:12Speaker 1: with Warner Brothers and Universal Cable Productions to create two
- 13:17Speaker 1: television shows. So we're bringing our content to the sub
- 13:22Speaker 1: screen where we're able to tell the types of stories
- 13:24Speaker 1: that we want to tell with people that look like us.
- 13:27Speaker 1: So we're very very fortunate to become in as executive producers,
- 13:31Speaker 1: not as um staff writers in the room. So we're
- 13:34Speaker 1: controlling the type of shows that we're shaping. There, you
- 13:37Speaker 1: go right there, That's all I wanted to hear. Were
- 13:41Speaker 1: because I'm gonna tell you something. People out there, you know,
- 13:46Speaker 1: I get frustrated when super talented people to you guys
- 13:49Speaker 1: like see you throw that number out there forty like
- 13:51Speaker 1: it was nothing. You really need to stop talking to me, Ashley.
- 13:56Speaker 1: You we can't talk no more. Oh if we fall
- 14:00Speaker 1: of their books in you know, and we went to
- 14:02Speaker 1: Hollywood and thought we'd find some new avenues to express
- 14:04Speaker 1: our vision. But you said control because it's important because
- 14:11Speaker 1: people see things a certain way, and because they're writers,
- 14:15Speaker 1: they don't have the life experience. And if if you
- 14:18Speaker 1: hold onto anything, hold onto your name and your brand.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Because I'm gonna tell you something. I've been an executively
- 14:24Speaker 1: do so I've been a writer. I should always tell
- 14:26Speaker 1: us to Steve Harvey as a Steve, I can get
- 14:29Speaker 1: a job the next day. If your show get counsel.
- 14:33Speaker 1: If your show get counsel, your name is tarnished. So
- 14:36Speaker 1: always know this is that your brand. It's what got
- 14:41Speaker 1: you there. And if you don't respect it and control it.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And I don't care what names they call you, I
- 14:47Speaker 1: don't if they kill you, y'all jerks, y'all asses or whatever.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You control your image, man, because they will get a
- 14:55Speaker 1: job someplace else and they don't even know you. I'm
- 14:58Speaker 1: gonna just tell you. The writers who come on There's show,
- 15:00Speaker 1: they don't know you. They may have read and half
- 15:02Speaker 1: a book, read, a little clip from a New York
- 15:05Speaker 1: Times article, went in there, pitched, and then on your
- 15:08Speaker 1: show based on some other work they did on other dramas.
- 15:11Speaker 1: So your brand control is important. Hit me on that, absolutely,
- 15:16Speaker 1: that's excellent advice. And learn how to direct too. Okay,
- 15:21Speaker 1: that way you can knock that director out of that
- 15:23Speaker 1: chair and you start directing and controlling your whole brand,
- 15:27Speaker 1: because you guys have something special. And the reason I
- 15:30Speaker 1: say that because when I read, uh, the Cartel seven,
- 15:34Speaker 1: I just saw the whole series. You know you guys right,
- 15:37Speaker 1: so good man, It's like I just I just saw.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I just felt like every chapter was another episode you
- 15:44Speaker 1: feel me, and so it was like every episode it
- 15:47Speaker 1: was like because I'm a big fan of you know,
- 15:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna just tell you this. When Power came out,
- 15:52Speaker 1: and I'm not trying to compare what you do the Power,
- 15:54Speaker 1: but that it's that gritty genre. You know what I'm
- 15:56Speaker 1: saying where a show like that wasn't supposed to make
- 15:58Speaker 1: it on TV. Go t with like that in the past,
- 16:01Speaker 1: ain't made it on TV. And I'll be perfectly honest,
- 16:04Speaker 1: when they told me fifty six was tied to it,
- 16:06Speaker 1: I turned my friend, go, this ain't gonna make it.
- 16:09Speaker 1: This ain't I ain't gonna watch this crap. I am
- 16:13Speaker 1: the biggest power of fan you can find. Because in
- 16:17Speaker 1: the end, this is why I know you guys can
- 16:20Speaker 1: be successful with this, because your series is about family.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Your series is really about parody and that emotion. If
- 16:30Speaker 1: you look at Knarckles, the series that's just about family.
- 16:33Speaker 1: If you look at if you look at the series
- 16:35Speaker 1: with Power, that's really about two parents who making mistakes,
- 16:40Speaker 1: really trying to take care of their family. This just
- 16:41Speaker 1: happened to be drug dealers. Just have to be drug dealers.
- 16:44Speaker 1: There ain't no different to somebody that ibm ain't nobody
- 16:47Speaker 1: different somebody Amazon dot Com. It's just that their lifestyle,
- 16:50Speaker 1: little bit interest because they kill people, they beat up people,
- 16:53Speaker 1: ruff them up. That's all y'all do. But that's that's
- 16:57Speaker 1: the that's the enlightening part. That's why I know you
- 16:59Speaker 1: are't something special. The thing I think is even bigger
- 17:03Speaker 1: opportunity for you guys is that audio booking. Because man,
- 17:08Speaker 1: that digital platform, y'all will own a team. And I'm
- 17:11Speaker 1: not just talking just to the urban culture, y'all will
- 17:14Speaker 1: own it with everybody because to read, if you get
- 17:19Speaker 1: I'm just so excited for y'all, man, because I read
- 17:21Speaker 1: your book and I feel honored man that I got
- 17:25Speaker 1: to read something that excited me as a as a
- 17:28Speaker 1: guy in the creative space. You guys got it going on, man,
- 17:31Speaker 1: you guys really got it going on. And if nobody
- 17:35Speaker 1: has read your book, please read your book because it
