- 2:15Speaker 1: I've been able to see him play the role of
- 2:16Speaker 1: agent Alfonso mac mackenzie on ABC's Marvels Agents of Shields.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Making Conversations, my man, Henry Simmons, Hey,
- 2:27Speaker 1: thank you, Thank you. Henry. First of all, you know
- 2:31Speaker 1: I saw the premier so and I know the series,
- 2:33Speaker 1: so I saw the premier, so we can talk about that.
- 2:35Speaker 1: We want to talk about that, but I want to
- 2:37Speaker 1: just talk about your career a little bit here. First
- 2:39Speaker 1: of all, how much time do you do you stay
- 2:42Speaker 1: keep standing in shape? Because you're in shape last Now,
- 2:44Speaker 1: I saw you on the premiere and you're looking good,
- 2:47Speaker 1: my man. The arms they let you show the arms off,
- 2:49Speaker 1: some the guns. So how much time you in the gym? Man?
- 2:52Speaker 1: I just wanted because I know I don't look like that.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I can't look like someone was that when I know
- 2:58Speaker 1: you're working on I know some of it I gave
- 3:00Speaker 1: it to you, but you're keeping it in shape. How
- 3:02Speaker 1: does that working out? For you. Oh, let me tell
- 3:04Speaker 1: you something. It's it's it's hard work. I'm not gonna
- 3:06Speaker 1: lie to you know, especially for this role right here.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I Uh, I worked out more. I was working on
- 3:12Speaker 1: six days a week, and I didn't take any shortcuts
- 3:15Speaker 1: like you know some of these actors out here doing
- 3:18Speaker 1: uh these synthetic drugs, pound do that stuff. It's all
- 3:23Speaker 1: hard work, um, But I tell you it's hard because
- 3:27Speaker 1: you get up at you know, five o'clock in the morning,
- 3:30Speaker 1: you start working six o'clock, you get done at eight,
- 3:33Speaker 1: you get home at nine, nine thirty, you spend time
- 3:36Speaker 1: with your family. It's about thirty eleven o'clock. That's when
- 3:40Speaker 1: I would start working out. I started working out eleven
- 3:42Speaker 1: o'clock at night, get about twelve, twelve thirty, study for
- 3:47Speaker 1: the next day, go to sleep, and get ready to
- 3:50Speaker 1: do it all again. Because that's your that's your career,
- 3:53Speaker 1: that's your brand, that's your look. So you can't show
- 3:55Speaker 1: up for an audition with a pot balic that's that.
- 3:58Speaker 1: That's not now. I not tell you right now, even
- 4:02Speaker 1: if I wasn't uh an actor, I would never look
- 4:05Speaker 1: that happen. I couldn't do it. I couldn't do it,
- 4:06Speaker 1: could do it, because that's part of your brand. And
- 4:08Speaker 1: I always tell people that you know your brand, your model.
- 4:11Speaker 1: People have a certain expectation. They see a headshot, that
- 4:14Speaker 1: see your body of work when you come in for
- 4:16Speaker 1: an audition or they give your role because sometimes you're
- 4:18Speaker 1: blessed like that because they've seen your body of work
- 4:21Speaker 1: when you walk through that door. That's what they're expecting,
- 4:23Speaker 1: that that commitment, that same effort, that same consistency. How
- 4:27Speaker 1: has it been when you your estimation, were looking at
- 4:30Speaker 1: your career and you have a great body of work.
- 4:33Speaker 1: What has been the difficulties of maintaining that consistency of
- 4:36Speaker 1: getting the opportunity to stay in front of the person
- 4:39Speaker 1: who does the decision makers of Hollywood, the casting directors. Well,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you know, here's the thing. Uh, I'm old school. I'm
- 4:48Speaker 1: gonna just tell you right now. I'm old school. And
- 4:49Speaker 1: the way I approached my uh career, now that that's
- 4:54Speaker 1: good and bad. Right. A lot of funds a lot
- 4:57Speaker 1: of people nowadays you social media, they involved their personalized
- 5:01Speaker 1: the families. Media show so many, so many aspects of
- 5:06Speaker 1: their lives and that gives them so many followers and
- 5:09Speaker 1: that does help them uh, to some degree in terms
- 5:13Speaker 1: of getting jobs. Now, those aren't THEO jobs I want.
- 5:17Speaker 1: If if someone if the casting director, if a directors
- 5:20Speaker 1: looking at my social media account and seeing, oh, he's popular,
- 5:25Speaker 1: therefore I'm going to give him a job, that's not
- 5:27Speaker 1: the job. I want a job that is based on
- 5:30Speaker 1: artistry and so therefore, and I'm I'm a person. I
- 5:33Speaker 1: believe in privacy. I believe in the old school way
- 5:36Speaker 1: of having said, not not showing. Like if you go
- 5:40Speaker 1: to my um uh Instagram account, you won't see pictures
- 5:43Speaker 1: of my kids and see pictures house and you know
- 5:47Speaker 1: all stuff and uh. And also I try to do
- 5:50Speaker 1: things with integrity. Thank you. And that's what I started.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I said the two things that I want in this business.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I want long caf a obviously, because longevity is equivalent
- 6:02Speaker 1: to success. Uh, It's longevity and integrity, right. I don't
- 6:08Speaker 1: want to start doing things just to be doing them,
- 6:11Speaker 1: and when I look back on it, I question why
- 6:15Speaker 1: I did it or I'm humiliated by it. I don't
- 6:17Speaker 1: want that. But to tell you, when you operate with integrity,
- 6:22Speaker 1: that means your journey, your journey is going to have
- 6:25Speaker 1: a little bit more ups and downs are gonna be
- 6:27Speaker 1: a little bit longer on the road. You're not taking
- 6:31Speaker 1: everything that's you're thrown at you right right, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 1: I believe that, you know, I've looked at this. Relationships
- 6:37Speaker 1: are key to and that then then the integrity comes
- 6:39Speaker 1: with that. If you have integrity, you're gonna have relationships.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And if you have relationships, when people need you, they
- 6:45Speaker 1: know your body of work. And that's how you're saying,
- 6:47Speaker 1: you said rashand look, you can have the followers, but
- 6:49Speaker 1: if you don't have the body of the work, that
- 6:51Speaker 1: can bite you in the button. Because when you get
- 6:53Speaker 1: on that set, you know, and you and sometimes you're
- 6:56Speaker 1: challenged by talent, terrific talent, you know, because and sometimes
- 6:59Speaker 1: you not the biggest star on the set. Sometimes you're
- 7:02Speaker 1: in a great ensemble and you have to assemble, which
- 7:05Speaker 1: is kind of like what you have to deal with
- 7:06Speaker 1: with Marvel's Ages of Shelds. That's a great ensemble that
- 7:09Speaker 1: you have to deal with and you have to mess
- 7:11Speaker 1: your talent inside of them, and everything feels relatable, organic,
- 7:16Speaker 1: and that's why, you know, just watching on that series,
- 7:18Speaker 1: it's been a blessing to me because you're a black
- 7:21Speaker 1: superhero and I'm gonna just telling you know, and people
- 7:25Speaker 1: need to understand that why Black Panther was so popular,
- 7:27Speaker 1: because you know, we all need to feel that we
- 7:31Speaker 1: in that in that fantasy world, that we are part
- 7:33Speaker 1: of that part of the equation. And I'm gonna tell
- 7:36Speaker 1: you so man. You know, I know you were on
- 7:38Speaker 1: the second season, you were like a recurring character. And
- 7:41Speaker 1: when they made you, I think the third season, when
- 7:43Speaker 1: they made you a regular, I smiled, Henry, I smiled, brother,
- 7:49Speaker 1: thank you, thank you so much, thank you. You know,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you know, I look, I also I do how I
- 7:55Speaker 1: think there's a responsibility to my artistry, but I do
- 7:58Speaker 1: also recognize as a risk onstability, on being a black
- 8:02Speaker 1: man in this business because I know, I know, at
- 8:07Speaker 1: least I'm trying to be cognizant of what I represent.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And I mean not only to too other uh people
- 8:14Speaker 1: of color, but also my children and and also that's
- 8:17Speaker 1: why I want to operate an integrity and you know, uh,
- 8:22Speaker 1: when when I hear people say things like that about
- 8:25Speaker 1: Marvels Agents of Shield, when they say, wow, they see
- 8:27Speaker 1: this guy and he's inspiring, you know, because he's a
- 8:32Speaker 1: black man. And I'm gonna tell you, like this, I
- 8:37Speaker 1: was so surprised. Number one, that what was surprised the
- 8:43Speaker 1: fact that they made me director right right right? You
- 8:47Speaker 1: don't see particularly in that position. I I I wouldn't
- 8:53Speaker 1: think that, uh, that they would make a black man
- 8:59Speaker 1: that leader of that squad. I thought it would be
- 9:03Speaker 1: someone else. But volumes to the writers and producers that
- 9:07Speaker 1: I work with, right right, you know, and that and
- 9:10Speaker 1: that's that's important because you know, first of all, you know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: you're not just an ardiner. You're you're a big black man.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And I say that in a good way. When when
- 9:18Speaker 1: you're walk in the room, you feel a room, you know,
- 9:20Speaker 1: they go, wow, God looks good, he's in shape. Who
- 9:23Speaker 1: is that guy you you're here? Who is that guy
- 9:25Speaker 1: type of person who walks in the room? And that
- 9:29Speaker 1: that's really good. But that's a responsibility that comes with that,
- 9:32Speaker 1: and so and so when I look at it with
- 9:34Speaker 1: this now, when I say that, when they when they
- 9:35Speaker 1: made you that recurring character, then they made you the
- 9:38Speaker 1: regular and made it legitimately a level of responsibility that
- 9:43Speaker 1: can be engaged into this show because I see a
- 9:47Speaker 1: part of me, my kids see a part of me,
- 9:49Speaker 1: my friends see a part of me in that show
- 9:51Speaker 1: that looks like me. Because guess what, in the fantasy world,
- 9:55Speaker 1: we are heroes too, and you are a hero, and
- 9:58Speaker 1: that's mentoring other people because us. You know, I grew
- 10:01Speaker 1: up watching you know, buying the whole combined Captain America
- 10:05Speaker 1: and then were my fantasies now. And that's a good
- 10:08Speaker 1: fantasy to have, because that's a wish, that's a dream.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And to see a black man who looks, who looks statueous,
- 10:15Speaker 1: who looks in shape, who looks good, that's a blessing, man,
- 10:19Speaker 1: And that's a blessing for it not only for people
- 10:22Speaker 1: of color, but for white America to see you as
- 10:25Speaker 1: well as a leader, as a guy of thor that's important. Man.
- 10:30Speaker 1: I just wanted to That's why I was excited about
- 10:32Speaker 1: interviewing you today Herery because you know, a lot of times,
- 10:34Speaker 1: you know, as an actor, we get in these vacuums
- 10:36Speaker 1: and we just do the best job we can do.
- 10:38Speaker 1: But when you step out into my world, you know,
- 10:42Speaker 1: the the you know, the the golden corral world of
- 10:44Speaker 1: the Kroger world of regular people just shopping the rafts.
- 10:47Speaker 1: You know, that's that's the people that that look at
- 10:50Speaker 1: you and go, you go. Why is he looking at
- 10:52Speaker 1: me like, wait, because guess what you are doing? You
- 10:54Speaker 1: mean something to us, Henry, I want to know what
- 11:00Speaker 1: you're talking about. Yeah, I'm I'm a regular guy. Though
- 11:02Speaker 1: I'm a regular guy, but I appreciate that. Oh yeah,
- 11:06Speaker 1: you know I Faso Mac Now, yeah, I'm taking something. Faso.
- 11:09Speaker 1: You know your character on the show. Now, you know,
- 11:12Speaker 1: because I I'm not shaped like you, but I got
- 11:15Speaker 1: a ball head and a beer to you know, kind
- 11:16Speaker 1: of keep it close up. So I would just let
- 11:19Speaker 1: you know I I fade in that lane that you
- 11:22Speaker 1: live in. Okay, now, okay, Now, now you're the director,
- 11:27Speaker 1: which like Nick Fury and the Marvel movies, he was
- 11:29Speaker 1: the director. So you're kind of like the Nick Theory
- 11:32Speaker 1: character on the television sharing Marvel's Agents of Shields. Because
- 11:36Speaker 1: my man Colson, he's called he's like a robot this
- 11:38Speaker 1: season or something. He probably he was brought back from
- 11:41Speaker 1: the dead. Can you can you feel us in on
- 11:42Speaker 1: the details because I saw the premier and uh and
- 11:45Speaker 1: we'll talking about it. Yeah. He the thing is he
- 11:50Speaker 1: uh he died right and he was And then there
- 11:54Speaker 1: was another character at last season season six that looked
- 11:58Speaker 1: quite a bit like him and I guess infused with
- 12:01Speaker 1: in another dimension he wore a person. Uh but when
- 12:06Speaker 1: he died. Um, there's these androids called chronic Colms and
- 12:13Speaker 1: uh Simmons. The Simmons character was able to infuse all
- 12:18Speaker 1: of Colson's stocks and feelings and memories everything into this
- 12:24Speaker 1: chronic Colm. So she created Coulson in a way, although
- 12:27Speaker 1: he is an android, he is like Colson in in
- 12:33Speaker 1: the way he thinks and moves and fields. So that's
- 12:37Speaker 1: the way they were the writers were brilliant and being
- 12:40Speaker 1: able to bring him back that way. Um. Uh So
- 12:44Speaker 1: now he's back, and he his position is different because
- 12:48Speaker 1: he's an agent, right, and also he's different because he
- 12:52Speaker 1: has this uh, he has strength. He's kind of as
- 12:55Speaker 1: a superhero now right right, like like Quake. Quake really
- 12:58Speaker 1: has the big power out that because she'd throw people.
- 13:02Speaker 1: You know, you come close to her, you know, she
- 13:03Speaker 1: can just blast your way. But but but but now
- 13:06Speaker 1: he has this an amazing strength. He can move real
- 13:09Speaker 1: quick and so so it's really ironic because you know,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you know, he was first introduced into the Marvel series
- 13:16Speaker 1: in the movie Thor and of course we all saw
- 13:19Speaker 1: him die in the Avenger of movies and then he
- 13:21Speaker 1: somehow who brought back to life for the television series,
- 13:24Speaker 1: which was a great gift for us. So him dying
- 13:27Speaker 1: in front of us, we're kind of used to him
- 13:29Speaker 1: dying and coming back, So, Harry, I wasn't a stress,
- 13:34Speaker 1: you know, it wasn't a stressed though. Oh he's back. Okay, cool, okay,
- 13:37Speaker 1: come okay, come, okakay. Well, let's it's finally here. The
- 13:40Speaker 1: season of celebration, and no matter how you celebrate with
- 13:44Speaker 1: family and friends, whether you're preparing for reys magos or

- 15:38Speaker 1: straight situation straight. So wen go get on with the
- 15:41Speaker 1: show because calls he's the vampire of this way. If
- 15:49Speaker 1: he could keep coming back, they can resurrect Captain America.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Uh Iron may everybody can get young again. Okay, if
- 15:59Speaker 1: coals could keep out of back, because yeah, it never
- 16:01Speaker 1: had the superpower. So tell us about your character. You know,
- 16:05Speaker 1: we talked about you being the director, but tell about
- 16:07Speaker 1: tell us about the whole of you know, because your
- 16:09Speaker 1: characters has had certain levels of evolution in this series
- 16:13Speaker 1: and different roles in different leaps and different transition different models.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Talk about it when he was introduced into the show,
- 16:20Speaker 1: and bring us forward. Okay, sure, Well initially I went
- 16:25Speaker 1: on just a simple audition and uh, you know, about
- 16:29Speaker 1: two weeks later they asked me to come aboard and
- 16:32Speaker 1: I'm sure. But the problem was, at the time the
- 16:36Speaker 1: first season was not on Netflix. I didn't have I
- 16:41Speaker 1: didn't I didn't know what I was stepping into. I mean,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I had an idea because I had seen a little
- 16:46Speaker 1: bit of the show, but I didn't I didn't know
- 16:48Speaker 1: my first day there. It was just it was everything
- 16:51Speaker 1: I thought it would be and more. I mean, there
- 16:53Speaker 1: were if the technology you walk on set, there's there's
- 16:58Speaker 1: there were like twenty people at the time. Uh, all
- 17:01Speaker 1: these this weapon read the names of all these guns,
- 17:03Speaker 1: that the aircraft and and uh all the technical language
- 17:09Speaker 1: and the levels this all that, and it was a
- 17:12Speaker 1: whole new world. I knew right away that this is
- 17:14Speaker 1: where I want to be a part of. Yeah, I'm
- 17:17Speaker 1: telling you. Uh, here's the thing. My first season, I
- 17:21Speaker 1: was recurring, and I was advised not to do it
- 17:24Speaker 1: because people people were like, you know, don't, don't do that.
- 17:28Speaker 1: You know, don't don't recur the whole season because then
- 17:30Speaker 1: they can drop you at the end. But here's my thing.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I know, once I get in, I believe in my talent.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I know how hard I work, and I've bet on
- 17:42Speaker 1: me and I've bet on God. So yeah, that's that's
- 17:47Speaker 1: my number one. Uh So I knew. I said, no, no,
- 17:50Speaker 1: I'm not worried about I know I'm gonna recur. I'm
- 17:52Speaker 1: gonna recur, and I know they're gonna there's no doubt
- 17:54Speaker 1: in my mind. And that's what happened. And then they
- 17:56Speaker 1: helped me to uh series regular. But the trend the
- 18:02Speaker 1: way Mac came about here. Initially, I don't know if
- 18:04Speaker 1: you remember, he was so reluctant to fight. He didn't
- 18:07Speaker 1: want to fight many there was no way in the
- 18:11Speaker 1: world he was gonna fight. And he Colston said, look,
- 18:14Speaker 1: I need you to get out there. So finally he
- 18:16Speaker 1: got out there, and and he was doing everything he
- 18:19Speaker 1: could to maintain the fight but not kill anyone and
- 18:23Speaker 1: just do what would need to be done. A matter
- 18:25Speaker 1: of fact, he tried to leave in the first I'm
- 18:29Speaker 1: not cut out for this um But as things progressed,
- 18:34Speaker 1: there were times that Colson had to leave. Like I
- 18:37Speaker 1: think there was one time when he had the cree
- 18:38Speaker 1: blood in him and he needed to explore that. And
- 18:45Speaker 1: and the one thing I liked is that right off
- 18:47Speaker 1: the bat they had um my character Mac but in
- 18:51Speaker 1: heads with Colson because Colson was using Shield for his own, uh,
- 19:00Speaker 1: his own needs, instead of using it for the greater good,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and Mac was against that. And Mac was right, He's like, look,
- 19:06Speaker 1: you can't be using it to find out all about
- 19:08Speaker 1: this creed. But this is about saving the world. This
- 19:12Speaker 1: is about doing it the bigger picture, not just do
- 19:14Speaker 1: a picture and he was. I was the one that
- 19:17Speaker 1: was vocal against Colson. I like that, but we had
- 19:21Speaker 1: mutual respect and you noticed from Coaston would me, he
- 19:23Speaker 1: would put me in charge. So eventually you know, I
- 19:27Speaker 1: was out in the field. They gave me the shotgun
- 19:29Speaker 1: acts and the fighting and all that. So when we
- 19:31Speaker 1: get down to UH season I think it was five
- 19:35Speaker 1: and the five where they decide who's going to be
- 19:39Speaker 1: the director after Colson dies, I thought for sure it
- 19:44Speaker 1: was gonna be either Quake or there wasn't in the comics,
- 19:48Speaker 1: or May uh May. And when they gave me the mantle,
- 19:53Speaker 1: I was I was extremely flattered. I'm not gonna lie
- 19:59Speaker 1: ext needs latter because it says two things. It says
- 20:03Speaker 1: something about me personally write an actor. They know that
- 20:07Speaker 1: I have the authority right the UH the characteristics of
- 20:13Speaker 1: leadership and integrity, thank you, and as an actor the
- 20:17Speaker 1: strength to carry that mantle and leave. And as a
- 20:23Speaker 1: as the character of Mac they they see through his
- 20:27Speaker 1: progression that he has UH that I've infused him with
- 20:31Speaker 1: those qualities as well. Absolutely, and they believed in me,
- 20:35Speaker 1: and that's that was something that meant. It meant so
- 20:37Speaker 1: much for me. I just I'm not a lie. Well,
- 20:39Speaker 1: I guess what meant something to me too, Okay, mental
- 20:42Speaker 1: to a lot of people out there of color to
- 20:45Speaker 1: see you an authority, an authority figure. When Nick Ferry
- 20:49Speaker 1: comes on the screen and ordering the Avengers around, I
- 20:52Speaker 1: feel good order in Spider manner. I feel good because
- 20:56Speaker 1: you go wow, because we all know that could have
- 20:59Speaker 1: been a white car. Okay, it could have been a
- 21:02Speaker 1: white character. So but they made a decision that, based
- 21:05Speaker 1: on your talent, color didn't matter. You're the leader, Yeah
- 21:11Speaker 1: it didn't. It didn't matter. And because now this is
- 21:14Speaker 1: why we're gonna go to the series. Now this is
- 21:17Speaker 1: the final mission. Okay, watching the premiere episode last night,
- 21:21Speaker 1: you guys are transported back to nineteen thirty one. Now,
- 21:25Speaker 1: this is why this is important to me. First of all,
- 21:28Speaker 1: you were wearing a fly suit. Okay, I just want
- 21:30Speaker 1: to let you know that brother wanted that. You know,
- 21:34Speaker 1: you were you were looking at you were wearing something
- 21:36Speaker 1: I definitely wear put on because I'm a Taylor made guy, Himmery.
- 21:39Speaker 1: You know, I'm just let you know that's you know,
- 21:42Speaker 1: you know how you didn't you didn't let me get
- 21:47Speaker 1: to the hat. Come on, this food, Look at this food.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Got this hat cocked to the side. A brother in one,
- 21:56Speaker 1: you fool. Every week, I'm gonna get on your about that.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I can't believe this food got these brown shoes on. Okay,
- 22:05Speaker 1: signed up walking down here with these white folks with
- 22:07Speaker 1: his hat cocked to the side, and one you know
- 22:11Speaker 1: that can't happen, right, We're gonna do We're gonna do it.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Oh my god, Oh my god. Because you know, it
- 22:21Speaker 1: was really interesting because of the fact that this is
- 22:23Speaker 1: where it gets interesting, because of the fact that it's
- 22:28Speaker 1: one and we know the racial situation. It's thirty one.
- 22:32Speaker 1: We know how women were treated in eighteen thirty one,
- 22:36Speaker 1: and here you are a man of authority, the boss
- 22:43Speaker 1: of these white people. Because we gotta talk like this,
- 22:45Speaker 1: because because I think that had to be thought out
- 22:49Speaker 1: when that time period was picked. They do, you know,
- 22:55Speaker 1: talk us through that whole process, because you knew that
- 22:58Speaker 1: time period that you couldn't walk around just giving them
- 23:00Speaker 1: orders out in public because they would draw attention. And
- 23:03Speaker 1: also when people came to you negative, because I've seen
- 23:06Speaker 1: in the in the premier where somebody came to you
- 23:08Speaker 1: negative because negative, because you were a person of color.
- 23:11Speaker 1: You react and you go Oh, don't make no ripples.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Don't don't make no ripples. You know, I think that
- 23:18Speaker 1: was really and then uh, I think Chloe's character, you know,
- 23:22Speaker 1: when she was walking into the bar area, Uh that
- 23:25Speaker 1: that that that this got treated like she was a
- 23:28Speaker 1: stupid female in his eyes, you know, while you're at home,
- 23:31Speaker 1: you know, taking care of babies, and she reacted to that.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I think that is so clever because of the fact
- 23:36Speaker 1: that it allows us to see, you know, how how
- 23:40Speaker 1: how time has changed, but if you go back to
- 23:44Speaker 1: that time, it's still the same. But you guys got
- 23:46Speaker 1: to play out your roles and the characters that we
- 23:49Speaker 1: believe that you are in a period that's not conducive
- 23:53Speaker 1: to that particular particular social economic, social stylings. Talk to
- 23:59Speaker 1: us about that. When the script was being put in
- 24:01Speaker 1: front of you, guys, how what did y'all think about it?
- 24:03Speaker 1: Did you have any questions when you were developing that
- 24:05Speaker 1: period of well, that was my first question. That was
- 24:10Speaker 1: my first question about race, because look, you know, you
- 24:14Speaker 1: you can't deny that I'm a six foot four, two
- 24:18Speaker 1: time black man walking down the street. You can't deny it.
- 24:22Speaker 1: And the thing is that I said to them, now,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I don't know what they had in motion, but I
- 24:27Speaker 1: asked him, I said, what, what how are you going
- 24:29Speaker 1: to address And one of the executives said, oh, we
- 24:33Speaker 1: might say something where uh, where someone says, oh, you know, hey,
- 24:38Speaker 1: you gotta walk through the back or something like that.
- 24:41Speaker 1: And and again I don't know how much further they
- 24:43Speaker 1: were gonna go, but I mean when we first, when
- 24:46Speaker 1: they first started talking about I said, listen, I would
- 24:49Speaker 1: like you to address that. I would like you to
- 24:52Speaker 1: address it more than just something like that, because it
- 24:55Speaker 1: wasn't something that one person might itself. Everybody felt a
- 25:00Speaker 1: certain way about uh, black people. Everybody that was what
- 25:05Speaker 1: a certain way about black people during the time. I mean,
- 25:09Speaker 1: you know, uh, I'm not saying that body was racist,
- 25:13Speaker 1: but I'm saying that some things were acceptable and some
- 25:17Speaker 1: things were not. A black man walking amongst white people
- 25:22Speaker 1: and giving orders and walking in and walking with us
- 25:25Speaker 1: in his authority and in his power was not accepted.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Now as a character, there's no way I was going
- 25:32Speaker 1: to back down from that. There's no way I was
- 25:34Speaker 1: going to I'm not gonna walk into a situation. And
- 25:38Speaker 1: because now, look, if it was a different time period,
- 25:40Speaker 1: if I was playing a movie where I was born
- 25:43Speaker 1: that time, and it not not it might be different,
- 25:46Speaker 1: but because I'm a man of this age, going back
- 25:49Speaker 1: in time, I'm going to keep the authority in the
- 25:52Speaker 1: power in which I walk in because I'm not diminishing
- 25:57Speaker 1: the story, you know what I'm saying. But that's why
- 25:59Speaker 1: a lot, that's why I thought, you know, and looking
- 26:01Speaker 1: at the thirty one soon as they said that time
- 26:04Speaker 1: for you and I read that, I said, Wow, this
- 26:05Speaker 1: is gonna be interested watching your character because you're not
- 26:08Speaker 1: gonna become five for seven okay and six five pounds,
- 26:12Speaker 1: you know, You're still gotta be six ft four, that's all.
- 26:14Speaker 1: You cocked that hat and was stride because when you
- 26:17Speaker 1: walk in the room, like I said, when you're walking
- 26:19Speaker 1: the room, even today, you are a room changer because
- 26:22Speaker 1: of how you look and your physicality. And so one
- 26:27Speaker 1: you walk into that bar, immediately everybody looked at you, okay,
- 26:32Speaker 1: you know, because they're going, okay, we got them being
- 26:34Speaker 1: in here. Wise that big black dude in here, and
- 26:37Speaker 1: who let him in? You know, And and and that's
- 26:40Speaker 1: just that's just to me. It's fine with me because
- 26:42Speaker 1: that storytelling, but the storytelling that we could not have
- 26:46Speaker 1: is that you bowing down or you being talked too
- 26:49Speaker 1: badly and not reacting to it. That is what I
- 26:53Speaker 1: appreciated about last night and thank you. Yeah, and the
- 26:57Speaker 1: year is that you notice each time someone like one guy,
- 27:00Speaker 1: I think he said shadow and the implication me was racial.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Now you know, it might have been something different, but
- 27:09Speaker 1: the implication for me was racial. And in the bar
- 27:11Speaker 1: when they started, UH, he started to call me a
- 27:16Speaker 1: racial derogatory word and and said I stepped to them both.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I said what you said, right, you know, yes, yes, yes,
- 27:25Speaker 1: you know nothing I preached it. I'm not you know, look,
- 27:29Speaker 1: I'm you know, I'm not gonna blow my cover. But
- 27:31Speaker 1: the thing is is that a man in this age
- 27:35Speaker 1: and this this this latent time UH has a certain
- 27:39Speaker 1: sense can walk in his authority, can walk in his power,
- 27:43Speaker 1: and and that's something that is ingrained in us. So
- 27:46Speaker 1: that was a re actionary thing for mac back Man
- 27:49Speaker 1: when he was he was in the third it was beautiful,
- 27:51Speaker 1: It was beautiful, you know, I just wanted to everybody know,
- 27:53Speaker 1: it's a great series premier and but I thought that,
- 27:56Speaker 1: But that's an underlying tone, especially how women were treated
- 27:59Speaker 1: in Ante thirty one and how people of color when
- 28:01Speaker 1: treated in nineteen thirty one is going to be played
- 28:04Speaker 1: out through the period while they stand down there. And
- 28:06Speaker 1: I think it's really cool because the writers heated your
- 28:09Speaker 1: thoughts and and a lot of respect, because you can't
- 28:12Speaker 1: do a great series and you can't send little underlying
- 28:15Speaker 1: messages that respect is always the bottom of bottom line
- 28:18Speaker 1: we're all trying to achieve. And in this final mission,
- 28:22Speaker 1: which is the seventh season of Marvels Agents of Shields,
- 28:25Speaker 1: it's really especial because of the fact that you're the director.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Women have power, women are fighters, women are not subservient,
- 28:33Speaker 1: and they're on a mission to save the world. Tell
- 28:35Speaker 1: us about this this final mission and let us know
- 28:38Speaker 1: the direction and what can we expect the season. Henry, Well,
- 28:42Speaker 1: you can expect us too. I think it's already been
- 28:45Speaker 1: told that we are we don't remain in this time
- 28:51Speaker 1: we go to different time period. Absolutely, I think that's
- 28:55Speaker 1: already been said. I'm not giving anything, um and do.
- 29:01Speaker 1: The one thing I could say is that, uh, the mission,
- 29:06Speaker 1: I'm trying to say somebodout giving away the wishes the mission.
- 29:11Speaker 1: It becomes more complicated because, as you know, if you
- 29:14Speaker 1: go back in time, it's a butterfly effect. If you
- 29:19Speaker 1: do something, it changes the future, and then maybe if
- 29:23Speaker 1: you change the future, then maybe you have to go
- 29:25Speaker 1: back to another time to try to impress something so
- 29:29Speaker 1: it doesn't happen in the present time. So it's it's
- 29:35Speaker 1: a thing where and where you were trying to trying
- 29:43Speaker 1: to put out fires and trying to do what's necessary,
- 29:48Speaker 1: uh to stop these chronic colms from taking over. But
- 29:53Speaker 1: but the thing is is uh, like I said along
- 29:58Speaker 1: the way, you just have to read. You know, there's
- 30:02Speaker 1: gonna be some things where it's gonna affect people's lives
- 30:06Speaker 1: and look and look like this, because we're moving through
- 30:09Speaker 1: time right there are other people that are gonna come
- 30:12Speaker 1: that could possibly come back that we've seen before. That's awesome.
- 30:16Speaker 1: That's Henry. I don't want to hold you any longer, man,
- 30:19Speaker 1: I just want to I just want to have an
- 30:20Speaker 1: honest conversation with somebody I respect, a person I consider
- 30:24Speaker 1: a mentor for a lot of young people of all
- 30:26Speaker 1: colors in this country, but more importantly in the in
- 30:29Speaker 1: the era that we live today, you know, we all
- 30:32Speaker 1: need to look up and see somebody that's doing something
- 30:34Speaker 1: different and doing the impossible and you do it every
- 30:36Speaker 1: Wednesday at ten pm Eastern and nine pm Central on

- 31:05Speaker 1: And sometimes you need to be told, man, you special man,

- 31:16Speaker 1: because you go to work, you take care of your family,
- 31:18Speaker 1: and you have a respect for God, your special man.
- 31:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna fore you that, Uh. And I appreciate that

- 31:30Speaker 1: best one. The questions that you've asked, UH are meaningful
- 31:35Speaker 1: and insightful. Not sense for me, but I think for
- 31:38Speaker 1: other people. Hopefully. I appreciate you. Thank you. Thank you
