- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Hi there, and welcome to Connecting the
- 0:17Dots. I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. Great to be here.
- 0:20It is Tuesday, August 12th, 2025. And we're here,
- 0:24as always, trying to cut through some of the
- 0:26noise, sift through the data. Yeah, and really
- 0:28deliver the insights from tech and finance that
- 0:32actually matter to you. Exactly. So before we
- 0:35dive into the tech stuff, let's get a quick look
- 0:37at the bigger picture. Here in Sacramento, well,
- 0:40it's another sunny one, high of 95 degrees airy
- 0:42today. Pretty standard for August here. Nationally,
- 0:46it looks like some heavy rain down in the southern
- 0:48Appalachians and the central Gulf Coast. And
- 0:50that heat just won't quit out west and up in
- 0:52New England either. Oh, right. And we need to
- 0:54keep an eye on Tropical Storm Aaron. They're
- 0:55saying it could become a major hurricane this
- 0:57weekend out in the Atlantic. Yeah, definitely
- 1:00something for the East Coast to monitor closely.
- 1:02OK, shifting to the markets. Pretty upbeat day
- 1:04today, actually. Yeah, how do we do? The Dow
- 1:06Jones closed strong, 44 ,405 .46. That's up over
- 1:12354 points just today. Nice. And the week. Looking
- 1:16good there, too. Up more than 680 points since
- 1:20last Monday, August 4th. OK. OK. S &P 500 keeping
- 1:24pace. Yep. Closed at 6410 .65. That's up about
- 1:2915 and a half points today. And ahead of good
- 1:32week, too, right? A really good week. Up almost
- 1:34139 points since the 4th. That's over 2 .2 percent.
- 1:38Wow. All right. And Bitcoin. Well, see I checked
- 1:40Bitcoin still climbing closed at a hundred nineteen
- 1:43thousand one hundred eleven point zero nine So
- 1:45up just under half a percent today, but it's
- 1:48up like four point three five percent since August
- 1:505th So yeah positive signs across the board really
- 1:53good good push I could say the Sanford. Well
- 1:55my San Francisco Giants boy What happened yesterday
- 1:58another loss? Yeah lost one four to the Padres
- 2:01in the 11th. Ouch Padres again Yeah, you Darvish
- 2:04was just On fire for them and their guy Jackson
- 2:07Merrill went three for four just couldn't get
- 2:09anything going tough break always next game though
- 2:12That's what I keep telling myself. Okay enough
- 2:14sports woes, right? Let's talk tech the real
- 2:17shifts are happening there. Anyway, we've got
- 2:19three big stories from snarfles morningstar That's
- 2:21our internal snarkle tech article report. Yeah,
- 2:24and these aren't just you know headlines These
- 2:26are things really shaping business. Maybe your
- 2:28investments even just how you use tech day -to
- 2:31-day Exactly. So let's get right into the first
- 2:33one. It's well, it's causing quite a stir. Yeah,
- 2:37this one involves former President Trump in video
- 2:39and a pretty controversial chip deal with China.
- 2:43Okay, so what happened is President Trump announced
- 2:46this specific arrangement in video. and AMD too,
- 2:50they get to sell certain AI chips to China. We're
- 2:53talking the H20 from NVIDIA and the MI308 from
- 2:56AMD, right? These are the sort of stripped down
- 2:58ones. Exactly. The ones designed to comply with
- 3:00existing export controls, although Trump apparently
- 3:02called them obsolete. Yeah, yeah. So they get
- 3:05the export licenses. Yeah. But what's the catch?
- 3:07The catch is they have to pay the US government
- 3:1015 % of the revenue from those sales. 15%. Just
- 3:13straight off the top. Apparently. The reports
- 3:15say Trump initially wanted 20%. Wow. And Jensen
- 3:19Hong, Nvidia's CEO, actually went to the White
- 3:22House, showed diagrams, and argued it down to
- 3:2415. That negotiation must have been intense.
- 3:28It feels less like policymaking and more like,
- 3:31I don't know, a business deal. Well, and that's
- 3:34precisely the controversy, right? This is a huge
- 3:36shift, a reversal really, from the national security
- 3:39first approach we saw under Trump's first term
- 3:41and under Biden too. Yeah, for years it was all
- 3:43about restricting China's access, even if it
- 3:46hurt U .S. company sales there. Exactly. Now
- 3:49it seems like there's a willingness to let them
- 3:51sell, but only if they, well, pay up. It's like
- 3:54a direct pay to play fee. But is that even legal?
- 3:57I mean, aren't tariffs and fees supposed to go
- 3:59through Congress or, you know, formal regulatory
- 4:03stuff? That's the massive question mark. Generally,
- 4:05yes. Doing it via an ad hoc White House meeting
- 4:09that raises serious flags. You've got groups
- 4:12like the Government Accountability Office, the
- 4:13Office of Government Ethics, kind of scratching
- 4:15their heads. Because you're basically singling
- 4:17out specific companies for a special fee just
- 4:19to access a market, it sets a really weird precedent.
- 4:22Definitely unusual. But from an investor angle,
- 4:25they seem to like it. Well, yeah. I guess 85
- 4:28% of something is better than 100 % of nothing,
- 4:30right? If the alternative was a total ban. That
- 4:33seems to be the thinking. It gives Nvidia and
- 4:36AMD access to that huge Chinese market again.
- 4:39It lets them compete with companies like Huawei,
- 4:41who've actually been gaining ground because of
- 4:43the US restrictions. So how's China taking it?
- 4:46They need the chips, but paying a fee to the
- 4:49US can't sit well. It seems mixed. On one hand,
- 4:53yes, they need these for their AI ambitions.
- 4:55On the other, there's probably resentment about
- 4:57this fee. Plus, those old security concerns about
- 5:00alleged backdoors keep popping up, though Nvidia
- 5:03flatly denies them. So connecting the dots here.
- 5:06Is this the new normal? Are we going to see these
- 5:09kinds of digital tariffs for other strategic
- 5:12tech? It's the big question. Analysts think it's
- 5:14maybe less likely for things like software because
- 5:16semiconductors are just so uniquely critical,
- 5:19so strategic. But the precedent is set. What
- 5:22if next time, for the more advanced chips, Trump
- 5:25asks for 30 % or 50? It definitely opens that
- 5:29door. It's a whole new phase of tech diplomacy
- 5:31or maybe tech transactionalism. Fascinating stuff.
- 5:34OK, so from these high stakes global deals, let's
- 5:37zoom right down to the desktop level because
- 5:39that same tech, AI tech, is getting way more
- 5:42accessible. Yeah, this next story is also about
- 5:45Nvidia, but it's about bringing that power, that
- 5:47Blackwell GPU power directly to professionals,
- 5:51but maybe in smaller offices or studios. OK,
- 5:54so what do they announce? At Sigratch, they rolled
- 5:56out an expansion of their professional Blackwell
- 5:59GPU lineup. The key things are two new GPUs for
- 6:03compact workstations. The RTXPRO 4000 SFF and
- 6:08the RTXPRO 2000. SFF meaning small form factor.
- 6:11Exactly. And the big deal is they're both just
- 6:1470 watt cards. Super energy efficient. So you
- 6:16don't need some crazy power supply or special
- 6:18wiring. Precisely. No auxiliary power connectors
- 6:21needed. You can basically slot these into existing
- 6:24maybe smaller professional desktop PCs without
- 6:26a major overhaul. Okay, that is a big deal for
- 6:29smaller firms or departments. And they didn't
- 6:30forget the bigger setups either. There's also
- 6:32new RTXPRO 6000 server edition for enterprise
- 6:35data centers. All this should be available later
- 6:38this year 2025. So this is really about like
- 6:41democratizing access to serious AI power. That's
- 6:44a great way to put it. It brings high -end AI
- 6:46and graphics right to your desk without needing
- 6:49massive infrastructure changes. Think design
- 6:51studios, engineering firms, even medical offices.
- 6:54And for the IT folks, the CIOs, this makes on
- 6:57-premise AI much more feasible, right? Absolutely.
- 6:59Less reliance on the cloud, which can mean lower
- 7:01costs, definitely lower latency. And better data
- 7:04privacy. That's huge. Crucial. If you're working
- 7:07with sensitive medical images or proprietary
- 7:09engineering models or financial data, keeping
- 7:11it local is often a requirement or at least highly
- 7:14preferred. These GPUs make that possible with
- 7:17real power. Okay, but what about the actual performance?
- 7:20Are these stripped down cards still powerful?
- 7:22Oh yeah, the gains are significant. The RTX Pro
- 7:254000 SFF, they're saying up to 2 .5 times the
- 7:28AR performance and 1 .7 times the ray tracing
- 7:31speed of its predecessor, plus 20 gigs of memory.
- 7:35and the 2000. The RTX Pro 2000 Blackwell, the
- 7:38smaller one, still gives you like 1 .6x faster
- 7:403D modeling, 1 .4x faster CAD, 1 .6x faster rendering,
- 7:45and it's got 16 gigs of the newer faster GDDR7
- 7:49memory. So real tangible speed ups for professionals.
- 7:52And we're already seeing examples. Thornton Tomasetti,
- 7:55the engineering firm, their structural analysis
- 7:58is running almost 3x faster. That's huge for
- 8:01productivity. Or the government of Cantabria.
- 8:03Fine -tuning AI models twice as fast. Mile -high
- 8:07flood district, using them to handle massive
- 8:09simulation data sets. It enables new workflows.
- 8:13So it really pushes AI from being just this big
- 8:16cloud thing to something you can have right there
- 8:19on your machine doing complex work. Exactly.
- 8:22It supports things like generative urban design,
- 8:25smart devices like baby strollers getting smarter
- 8:27with real -time processing robotics. It brings
- 8:29the power to the edge. So NVIDIA is basically
- 8:32putting a slice of that supercomputing power
- 8:35right onto our desk, tailored for specific jobs.
- 8:38That's a big shift toward more distributed AI.
- 8:40It really is. It could unleash a lot of innovation
- 8:42at that local level. OK, fascinating. We'll shift
- 8:44gears one more time for our third story, moving
- 8:46into digital finance and stable coins with Circle.
- 8:49Right, Circle. They issue USDC, probably the
- 8:52biggest US -based stable coin. They just dropped
- 8:55their Q2 2025 financial results. And how did
- 8:58they look? Stablecoins have been huge. The top
- 9:01line looks fantastic. Revenue was $658 million.
- 9:05That's up 53 % year over year. 53%. Wow. And
- 9:09the amount of USDC out there just exploded. Up
- 9:1290 % year over year. It was $61 .3 billion at
- 9:16the end of Q2. And it's apparently up to $65
- 9:19.2 billion already by August 10th. And get this.
- 9:23$5 .9 trillion in on -chain transaction volume
- 9:27using USDC. Trillion. Just mind -boggling scale.
- 9:31Revenues up, usage is way up. must be profitable.
- 9:35Yeah, well, here's the twist. They reported a
- 9:37net loss of $482 million for the quarter. Whoa,
- 9:41wait, how does that happen with revenue soaring?
- 9:43It's mostly an accounting thing tied to their
- 9:44IPO earlier this year. It's not an operational
- 9:46loss. Okay, explain that. So the vast majority
- 9:49of that loss, like $424 million, was non -cash
- 9:52stock -based compensation. Another $167 million
- 9:55was from revaluing some convertible debt. These
- 9:58are typical, often one -time hits when a company
- 10:00goes public. Okay, so not money they actually
- 10:02spent operating. in the quarter. Exactly. If
- 10:05you look at their adjusted EBITDA, which strips
- 10:08out those kinds of things and shows core operational
- 10:11strength, that was actually up 52 % to $126 million.
- 10:15Right. So operationally, they're doing really
- 10:17well. It's just the IPO accounting makes the
- 10:20bottom line look messy for now. Precisely. It's
- 10:22not a red flag about the business itself. OK,
- 10:24that makes sense. And besides the financials,
- 10:26what else is new with Circle? It's pretty big,
- 10:29actually. They unveiled their own new layer one
- 10:33blockchain called ARK. Their own blockchain.
- 10:35Why, there are tons of blockchains already. Well,
- 10:37this one's designed specifically for stablecoin
- 10:39finance. It's EVM compatible, so it works with
- 10:42the Ethereum ecosystem. But here's the unique
- 10:44part. It uses USDC itself as the native token
- 10:48for paying transaction fees or gas. Oh, so you
- 10:52don't need Ether or some other token just to
- 10:55move your USDC around on their chain. You just
- 10:58pay the fee in USDC. Exactly. It removes a huge
- 11:00point of friction, especially for businesses
- 11:02or even regular users who just want to use the
- 11:04stable coin. Makes things much simpler. Yeah,
- 11:07that actually sounds really useful. What else
- 11:09does ARK offer? They're aiming for high performance,
- 11:11sub -second settlement times, an integrated foreign
- 11:14exchange engine for stable coins, and even opt
- 11:17-in privacy features. It's really built for financial
- 11:20applications. So this really connects the dots
- 11:22on circle strategy, doesn't it? They're not just
- 11:24the USDC issuer anymore. They want to be the
- 11:27whole platform. That seems to be the goal. Leverage
- 11:30that massive USDC supply and the trust they've
- 11:33built to create a full stack financial ecosystem.
- 11:37And the timing is interesting too, with regulations
- 11:39becoming clearer. Absolutely. President Trump
- 11:42signing the Genius Act recently, that created
- 11:44a federal framework for stablecoins here in the
- 11:46US. That clarity is a huge boost for the industry,
- 11:50and especially for Circle as the biggest US player.
- 11:53No wonder the stock jumped. You said CRCL surged
- 11:56over 11 % pre -market. Yeah, despite that headline
- 11:58net loss, investors are clearly looking past
- 12:01the one -off IPO costs. They're seeing the revenue
- 12:03growth, the USDC dominance, the strategic move
- 12:06with ARK, and the clearer regulatory path. It
- 12:09all points towards stablecoins becoming even
- 12:11more integrated into finance, and Circle is positioning
- 12:14itself right at the center of that. Makes perfect
- 12:16sense. Another piece of the puzzle in how digital
- 12:19money is changing things. Definitely. All right,
- 12:21that brings us near the end for today's Connecting
- 12:24the Dots. Quite a journey through tech, politics,
- 12:27and finance. Yeah, we started with that really
- 12:29unusual Trump NVIDIA AMD chip deal, selling to
- 12:32China again, but with that 15 % fee changing
- 12:35the rules of the game. Then we zoomed down to
- 12:37the desktop with NVIDIA's new Blackwell GPUs,
- 12:41like the RTX Pro 4000, SFF, and 2000. Bringing
- 12:45serious, energy -efficient AI power right to
- 12:49professional workstations. Making on -premise
- 12:51AI and things like secure data processing much
- 12:54more accessible across industries. And finally,
- 12:56circles big quarter. Yeah. Huge revenue and USDC
- 12:59growth that IPO -related net loss explained and
- 13:02the launch of their ARK blockchain using USDC
- 13:05for gas fees. Which could really streamline stablecoin
- 13:07payments and build out their financial ecosystem.
- 13:10These stories really show how interconnected
- 13:11everything is, right? Global policy impacts chip
- 13:14availability, which impacts the AI tools on your
- 13:16desk, which ties into the digital finance platforms
- 13:19we might use. It all connects, and the key thing
- 13:22for you, listening, is seeing how these pieces
- 13:25fit together to shape what's coming next in tech
- 13:28and finance. Yeah, and thinking ahead, you know,
- 13:31with AI getting more local and digital money
- 13:33getting smoother, how does that empower maybe
- 13:37smaller players, individuals to innovate in new
- 13:40ways? Something to think about. Definitely food
- 13:42for thought. We're here to help at Starful, so
