- 3:03Speaker 1: UMC Dot TV network. Please welcome to Money Making Conversations. Maya,
- 3:09Speaker 1: Hello there, how are you. I had a lot to
- 3:11Speaker 1: say about you, Maria, for we got started. That was
- 3:14Speaker 1: a handful. That's what happens with when you've been out
- 3:18Speaker 1: there for tweeny two years, my friend. Well, really it
- 3:24Speaker 1: really is, you know, because you know, we all start out.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I can I can think back because I my I
- 3:28Speaker 1: started out at IBM. I was my degrees in mathematics,
- 3:31Speaker 1: and then I wanted to be a stand up comic,
- 3:33Speaker 1: and I left ib under pursue a career as a
- 3:35Speaker 1: stand up comic, and you know, there was always it
- 3:39Speaker 1: was so far away where I wanted to beat it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: In fact, where I am right now. I didn't even
- 3:43Speaker 1: see myself being at this point. All I wanted to
- 3:45Speaker 1: do was just be successful. And at the age of eighteen,
- 3:48Speaker 1: all you wanted to be successful. Talk about those early
- 3:51Speaker 1: years of reaching that success, and then we'll talking about,
- 3:55Speaker 1: you know, finding yourself as to where you are right
- 3:58Speaker 1: now today. While I started out as a child of
- 4:02Speaker 1: the arts and something that I just loved to do
- 4:05Speaker 1: outside of school, of course, but I was also involved
- 4:08Speaker 1: in gospel choir, the orchestra, and the dance ting at school,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and those were the highlights of my day because kids
- 4:17Speaker 1: would come together for a common goal, whether it was
- 4:20Speaker 1: to compete or perform or put something together ourselves the showcase,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and it was all of all great synergy, all common
- 4:28Speaker 1: goal and uh about success. But we had to have discipline.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And so my early years from four years on four
- 4:38Speaker 1: years old on was shaped by the arts. But also
- 4:41Speaker 1: I come from a very musical and artistic family, so
- 4:44Speaker 1: I was always around it and always uh, I would say,
- 4:48Speaker 1: given examples of what to strive for and to be.
- 4:53Speaker 1: My father is a musician who inspired me greatly. Um
- 4:57Speaker 1: ever since I could remember as a little girl, there
- 4:59Speaker 1: were always musicians in the living room or the garage
- 5:03Speaker 1: rehearsing for his gigs. He's been in the studio. I
- 5:07Speaker 1: had some early experiences in my childhood just go into
- 5:10Speaker 1: the studio to watch him record, watched him put out
- 5:13Speaker 1: Lionel and present himself on his own label, get his
- 5:17Speaker 1: songs on the radio regionally or locally, and hustle and grind.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So I've always looked up to my dad in that aspect.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But singing is just something in music is something that
- 5:29Speaker 1: I've always been involved in through the arts, but with
- 5:33Speaker 1: family ties as well. There was never a day without music.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So I just kind of fell into it, and the
- 5:39Speaker 1: record deal came first because I was initially going to
- 5:42Speaker 1: pursue Broadway, which was acting, singing, dancing, choreography, etcetera. Um,
- 5:49Speaker 1: So it just so happened the record deal came first.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And I still want to do the theater passionately. Um.
- 5:57Speaker 1: But yes, it is a very competitive business. It does
- 6:01Speaker 1: take a lot of rehearsing, perfecting their craft and awesome
- 6:05Speaker 1: business before your art. Often in the field of business,
- 6:11Speaker 1: you know, it's all fun and games and shows to
- 6:15Speaker 1: the viewer, but there's so much legality involved just one thing,
- 6:21Speaker 1: you know. You know here you talk, you're absolutely right.
- 6:23Speaker 1: The business side pops up into the whole process. But
- 6:27Speaker 1: I think that my early years and as I went
- 6:30Speaker 1: through is trying to control my own destiny, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 1: trying to control my own depp and go to bed time.
- 6:36Speaker 1: And so that's the most frustrating thing I think when
- 6:38Speaker 1: you get into entertainment. It's because it's not like a
- 6:41Speaker 1: regular nine or five job. You know, you you go
- 6:43Speaker 1: to work at nine, you get off in five, you
- 6:45Speaker 1: go to sleep, you wake up, you go to work
- 6:46Speaker 1: at nine, you go up the next day something you
- 6:48Speaker 1: may have prepared to do may not happen. It might
- 6:51Speaker 1: not happen for months because somebody changed it, or a
- 6:54Speaker 1: record labeled closed, or the person you're just gonna do
- 6:57Speaker 1: it the duet with, or the show with, or the
- 7:00Speaker 1: with the opted out of it. So do you feel
- 7:03Speaker 1: at this point in your life, do you have more
- 7:04Speaker 1: control of your life even though the success you had
- 7:07Speaker 1: was so immediate and so amazing at the age of eighteen. Well,
- 7:12Speaker 1: it's something that I've always loved, you know, backtracking regardless
- 7:16Speaker 1: of the business that has to be done. That's required
- 7:18Speaker 1: in every field or every profession, obviously, but that's never
- 7:22Speaker 1: deterred me. And that was my point. I'm still here,
- 7:25Speaker 1: and I've learned the business as an independent label, as
- 7:28Speaker 1: an independent artist that signs her her own label, I've
- 7:31Speaker 1: had learn the business, so now I have more value.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It's not just an artist, but a complete antibody that
- 7:39Speaker 1: knows the groups. And I'm still learning, you know, it's
- 7:41Speaker 1: always a student, but I've learned so much more on
- 7:44Speaker 1: the business side, and it's actually inspired man and made
- 7:47Speaker 1: me more passionate about music because now I have this
- 7:49Speaker 1: freedom to do whatever i'd like creatively. But also protect
- 7:54Speaker 1: my art and protect my heart. Uh So it's a
- 7:57Speaker 1: great place to be, especially now in the social media days.
- 8:00Speaker 1: And nothing is going to stop me because yes, um
- 8:02Speaker 1: labels have definitely transitioned and they've been through layoffs who
- 8:07Speaker 1: are emerging with each other as you see the airlines
- 8:10Speaker 1: and many corporations doing these days, because that's just the
- 8:14Speaker 1: way of today, mound chizing and obviously technology that's replaced
- 8:20Speaker 1: the weather or increased to sales um to the old
- 8:24Speaker 1: way means physical palpy and record stores have closed off.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Also watched the transition from my first album being on
- 8:31Speaker 1: cassette tape or recording to tape itself versus digital you know,
- 8:35Speaker 1: from told or anything like that. And here we are
- 8:37Speaker 1: today doing albums on laptop wherever you are in the
- 8:40Speaker 1: world and mixing and mesturing on your own and then
- 8:45Speaker 1: distributing it on your own. There's so many new ways
- 8:48Speaker 1: and it's very exciting. So have transition with the times
- 8:52Speaker 1: as well on the business front, but there's only something
- 8:54Speaker 1: around the commodor news and learn a new at you know,
- 8:58Speaker 1: to be aware of. It is hard to keep up.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It's great to have you back on my show to
- 9:02Speaker 1: talk about your wonderful career, twenty two years in the
- 9:05Speaker 1: business you celebrated this year. Now when you talk about that,
- 9:09Speaker 1: your Planet nine, it's really amazing that a lot of
- 9:12Speaker 1: times when we see things that we're doing as we
- 9:15Speaker 1: get older, you really saw it when we were younger.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Were just taken because your father was an independent guy
- 9:20Speaker 1: who went out there, dropped his own later did all
- 9:22Speaker 1: the recording. Was that an inspiration for Planet nine. I
- 9:27Speaker 1: wasn't even thinking about all of that that I've witnessed
- 9:31Speaker 1: when I created Planet nine, but it's always been end
- 9:34Speaker 1: me so subconsciously. I'm sure it had a play when
- 9:39Speaker 1: I released Well, when I was recording my fourth album,
- 9:43Speaker 1: the release date that pushed back upon its release, and
- 9:46Speaker 1: I was signed to Motown within the Universal system at
- 9:49Speaker 1: that time, and I'm going it got pushed back. It
- 9:53Speaker 1: accidentally released in the furthest territory of our globe, which
- 9:57Speaker 1: is Japan, which is like a day and head it
- 10:00Speaker 1: and so there was leaked there and from there the
- 10:04Speaker 1: album leaked everywhere online on YouTube, etcetera. And from now
- 10:07Speaker 1: people had it for free, and that was a big
- 10:10Speaker 1: financial hit to the record label. Salvation of the album,
- 10:14Speaker 1: and my lawyers started that okay, technically out in the
- 10:17Speaker 1: marketplace right now, which means you can get your back
- 10:21Speaker 1: end advance if you take them the court, or you
- 10:23Speaker 1: can just leave that alone and go independent. So I
- 10:26Speaker 1: didn't feel like spending a year or a year and
- 10:28Speaker 1: a half or even funds um to try to get money,
- 10:34Speaker 1: you know, and I just moved on. And that's how
- 10:36Speaker 1: Planet nine was worth. Um. I started studying astronomy and
- 10:42Speaker 1: getting into a spiritual place and creating my own laws,
- 10:46Speaker 1: my own rules, my own timeline that didn't operate, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 1: with the timeline that everyone else had enforced upon me
- 10:56Speaker 1: on us control in your life, your death. So that's
- 11:00Speaker 1: what I'm talking about, you know, you rolling my life,
- 11:02Speaker 1: creating my own world. And that own world was on
- 11:06Speaker 1: the own planet. And that's how Planet nine was born.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Through the beginning of my independent journey, where I had
- 11:13Speaker 1: to become everything and I had to dictate everything, but
- 11:16Speaker 1: also become my own disciplinary and my own finance or
- 11:20Speaker 1: my own bank manager, lawyer, whatever it took. And here
- 11:24Speaker 1: I am, you know, in the thirteenth year of my
- 11:27Speaker 1: independent journey and nine independent projects. Now, you know, to
- 11:31Speaker 1: go independent, you don't do this by yourself. So I'm
- 11:34Speaker 1: assuming that you had to have people around you that
- 11:36Speaker 1: understood your visit vision, that woke up or awake when
- 11:40Speaker 1: you needed them to be awake and believed in you
- 11:42Speaker 1: and move forward. Well, did you have to reformulate or
- 11:45Speaker 1: create a new team when you decided to create this
- 11:47Speaker 1: level of independency for your own career and for you personally? Well,
- 11:52Speaker 1: I had already had my creative team, meaning my musicians
- 11:56Speaker 1: and answers as well as engineers, etcetera m own studio.
- 12:00Speaker 1: In two thousand five, I moved from California back home
- 12:03Speaker 1: from my roots to take care of family, to start
- 12:06Speaker 1: my nonprofit organization. And you know, my brother built my
- 12:11Speaker 1: studio for me. I became a teacher and developed all
- 12:16Speaker 1: the curriculum in the arts and Tech program the Maya
- 12:19Speaker 1: Arts and Tech Foundation, And so I did that for
- 12:22Speaker 1: years at home prior to the break in a split
- 12:25Speaker 1: with my label Motown in two thousand and seven. So
- 12:30Speaker 1: I already had a team that I was touring with,
- 12:32Speaker 1: but they were out of my hometown, so it's not
- 12:34Speaker 1: like family. And you know, that was a great cushion
- 12:38Speaker 1: to have because I needed them more than ever, and
- 12:42Speaker 1: they also relied on me at the same time, so
- 12:44Speaker 1: we had the road, you know, and that's how I
- 12:46Speaker 1: grind it for years to find my project. And I
- 12:49Speaker 1: still still do for all of my projects, but at
- 12:52Speaker 1: least they were in place. But I was self managed,
- 12:55Speaker 1: and I had learned a lot, you know, doing independent
- 12:59Speaker 1: before I became independent to get my vision across. When
- 13:02Speaker 1: I was, you know, it was a major label. And
- 13:05Speaker 1: France actually inspired me because in two thousand four I
- 13:08Speaker 1: saw him live and he inspired me to really focus
- 13:12Speaker 1: on building a pain with her. I feel, you know,
- 13:16Speaker 1: they wouldn't be hot skipping and jumping between artists, artists
- 13:20Speaker 1: with no passion but just the paycheck. And so that's
- 13:23Speaker 1: why I developed a team in my hometown. And you know,
- 13:27Speaker 1: we're still rocking to his day and sounding great at it.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Um Maya when you when you when you look at
- 13:34Speaker 1: because you're you know, when I listen, I listen to artists, songwriter, producer, actress, philanthropists.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Now let's transition to the role that you've been playing
- 13:42Speaker 1: for the last two seasons on Fifth War. Greg Carter,
- 13:45Speaker 1: who I've been knowing since nineteen eighty two. Jay Len,
- 13:47Speaker 1: I've been knowing her since nineteen eighty two, called Anthony
- 13:51Speaker 1: uh and so's there's so many people on that show
- 13:53Speaker 1: that I know, how did you get involved and get
- 13:55Speaker 1: the opportunity because that's that's shoots in Houston, Texas And
- 13:58Speaker 1: you already said your basis watching the d C. How
- 14:01Speaker 1: did Maya get an opportunity? Are learned about the casting
- 14:04Speaker 1: opportunities for this series that shot in Houston called Fear War. Well,
- 14:10Speaker 1: I have my own management company, He Entertainment, and basically
- 14:14Speaker 1: it's all over my website social media, and they've reached
- 14:19Speaker 1: that to my manager and I read the script. I
- 14:22Speaker 1: read the script and I was blown away. It kept
- 14:25Speaker 1: my attention. It was a one take read. I didn't
- 14:29Speaker 1: deter away from the script. They caught my attention and
- 14:32Speaker 1: it felt like real life, you know that we don't
- 14:35Speaker 1: necessarily often get to see on television. And I do
- 14:39Speaker 1: have ties with sit for because that's where I recorded
- 14:42Speaker 1: one of my second independent projects, Beauty in the Streets Mixtape,
- 14:46Speaker 1: Volume one, and I met with J Prince and we
- 14:50Speaker 1: started doing business together in nine. Yeah, and so I
- 14:55Speaker 1: recorded the whole album out there and we partnered up
- 14:59Speaker 1: independent and pushed that out between Wrap a Lot, Young
- 15:02Speaker 1: Empire and Planet nine and so getting to that amount
- 15:08Speaker 1: of time, but also teaming up with artists from Houston,
- 15:12Speaker 1: Texas all over that mixtape. You know, it felt like
- 15:16Speaker 1: the second home for a while. So any favorite I'm
- 15:20Speaker 1: I'm born in Rage. In fact, I was born in
- 15:22Speaker 1: fifth by the way, Houston, Texas. Any favorite eating spots
- 15:26Speaker 1: in Houston that you've learned in life? We actually went
- 15:31Speaker 1: to Popados quite up. I think it was Joe Crab
- 15:36Speaker 1: or crab Check or something like that way back when
- 15:38Speaker 1: I was not vegan. Yes, well you hit two up
- 15:42Speaker 1: right there. But Papa do come on n Papa dope
- 15:46Speaker 1: from there all the time. Yeah, yeah, you know, yeah,
- 15:54Speaker 1: because you know, I wanted to transition that that food
- 15:57Speaker 1: conversation that we've been having right in that Papodos is
- 16:00Speaker 1: not the place that Now, when you went to Papadose,
- 16:03Speaker 1: what did you eat? Because you're vegan, so and when
- 16:06Speaker 1: you walk in the restaurant, that's a good starting point.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And you're vegan, you're going to place a popular restaurant
- 16:11Speaker 1: like Papadose. What what does maya a vegan eat? Well,
- 16:16Speaker 1: I don't know because I haven't been that since, but
- 16:19Speaker 1: when I was not vegan, I was having that You
- 16:23Speaker 1: know the car and the profess Now I'm sure I
- 16:30Speaker 1: would have a salad and I would have to take
- 16:32Speaker 1: the cheese off, you know, not me, of course, and
- 16:35Speaker 1: veganize it. But you know, I'm sure they have broccoli
- 16:38Speaker 1: or corn and on the side, and all the side
- 16:40Speaker 1: dishes you can probably have without the butter. Right, It's
- 16:44Speaker 1: finally here, the season of celebration, and no matter how
- 16:48Speaker 1: you celebrate with family and friends, whether you're preparing for

- 18:47Speaker 1: eating person that you can come into because of the
- 18:50Speaker 1: fact that I don't follow the rules. I will eat
- 18:54Speaker 1: ice cream when I feel like it. I will either donut.
- 18:57Speaker 1: I have Chrispy Cream app on my phone by the way, Maya,
- 19:01Speaker 1: so just in case, I just want to find out
- 19:03Speaker 1: where if the lights on, so I can just drop
- 19:05Speaker 1: by day and pick me up a couple of donuts
- 19:08Speaker 1: and some milk. And so your book here, you know,
- 19:10Speaker 1: which began as as you say, well, began as one
- 19:12Speaker 1: of my many willpower challenges in quickly evolved into a
- 19:17Speaker 1: permanent vegan lifestyle change through education and awareness. Now when
- 19:21Speaker 1: you said willpower challenges, where the willpower challenges? This first
- 19:24Speaker 1: time I ever heard anybody say that will power challenges. Well,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I started these will power challenges in two thousand seven
- 19:33Speaker 1: when I became independent and I knew that I would
- 19:36Speaker 1: need to be again to trust myself but also master
- 19:39Speaker 1: myself every part of myself and become my own training,
- 19:43Speaker 1: nutritionists everything. Because there was no longer the support or
- 19:46Speaker 1: budget there from a major label to do those things
- 19:49Speaker 1: for me, and so I had to become those things.
- 19:52Speaker 1: And in order for me to become those things, I
- 19:54Speaker 1: had to instill discipline. So I would strip something away
- 19:56Speaker 1: from my life every year for three d sixty five days,
- 20:00Speaker 1: or do these crazy things like run a marathon with
- 20:03Speaker 1: no training twenty six two miles or you know these
- 20:07Speaker 1: massa clearnersten day straight and no food, not missed in shape. Here. Now,
- 20:13Speaker 1: you just said you ran a marathon with no training.
- 20:16Speaker 1: You just just you up and just start running, that's
- 20:18Speaker 1: what you just said. I mean, you're spout training for
- 20:23Speaker 1: eight months before you run a twenty six point to
- 20:26Speaker 1: mile marathon. And I had two months to try to
- 20:30Speaker 1: get it together because two months paray. Or I just
- 20:32Speaker 1: just that I was going to go ahead and run
- 20:34Speaker 1: after ankle surgery because my doctor told me not to,
- 20:38Speaker 1: and I do that. I could do it with my mind,
- 20:41Speaker 1: and that year I was vegetarian, but I put myself
- 20:46Speaker 1: through pain. I also conditioned myself with these types of
- 20:50Speaker 1: things because I know I'm going to need it in life.
- 20:53Speaker 1: But I also do a lot of stripping away of
- 20:55Speaker 1: the things that I do like because a lot of
- 20:58Speaker 1: the things that I like are not necessary good for me.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And so if I can let go of the things
- 21:03Speaker 1: that I really like, then I won't over react on
- 21:06Speaker 1: something is stripped away from me. So it's mental conditioning, really,
- 21:10Speaker 1: and that allows me to succeed also take blows a
- 21:13Speaker 1: lot easier and then start over again, you know, from
- 21:16Speaker 1: nothing or not knowing something, and become a student and
- 21:19Speaker 1: remain a student. And these are these are a series
- 21:22Speaker 1: of will Polo challenge, Well, you just challenge yourself. Well
- 21:24Speaker 1: you look at here and go, hey, I'm going to
- 21:27Speaker 1: do this because I like that. I like that's a
- 21:30Speaker 1: that's a particular book for you, you know that. Right,
- 21:33Speaker 1: maybe we're gonna talk about this other book that I'm
- 21:37Speaker 1: reading here that you're giving away for free, that you
- 21:38Speaker 1: need to be charging people for, you know obviously, well
- 21:41Speaker 1: you know this is I want people to have the information.
- 21:45Speaker 1: And it's not quite a book yet, but it's even
- 21:48Speaker 1: start a guide. It's a young lady called J. J.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Smith selling like three million copies of green smoothies and
- 21:56Speaker 1: it's not even thinking than this. Okay, But that's okay,
- 22:00Speaker 1: because I am planning on I'm going to be recording
- 22:03Speaker 1: an audiobook for the start guy. You know, people have
- 22:07Speaker 1: people like to listen versus read sometimes and both will
- 22:11Speaker 1: be available. But because I'm so passionate and this information
- 22:15Speaker 1: is everywhere, but people often ask me questions about how
- 22:18Speaker 1: to be even why does all vegan? Uh? This is
- 22:20Speaker 1: two difficult. Can I go vegan on a budget? Can
- 22:23Speaker 1: I go vegan? If I have family members that don't
- 22:25Speaker 1: want to go vegan? How to like my family go vegan?
- 22:28Speaker 1: I wanted a place that people could go to answer
- 22:32Speaker 1: all these questions instead of me typing paragraphs, you know,
- 22:35Speaker 1: on social media all day and I just give them
- 22:38Speaker 1: a link because I really do want to offer this
- 22:41Speaker 1: information that's free and available everywhere else. And that's because
- 22:45Speaker 1: I'm just passionate and it's done so much for me
- 22:47Speaker 1: and no secret really, but there needs to be one
- 22:51Speaker 1: place with all of this information. So that's how it started,
- 22:54Speaker 1: and I usually use it as a as a tool
- 22:57Speaker 1: for the vegan challenges that I do monthly. One. Okay,
- 23:01Speaker 1: help people further, you know what they like to well,
- 23:04Speaker 1: you know the name of the show is money Making
- 23:06Speaker 1: Conversations maya. Okay, I'm just being consistent with you, now, Rushawn.
- 23:11Speaker 1: This is how I talk. Now if I see an
- 23:13Speaker 1: opportunity to make money, I will and I will tell
- 23:16Speaker 1: some money. Hey, this is the money making an opportunity here.
- 23:19Speaker 1: But of course you you've told me this is made
- 23:26Speaker 1: being a student and becoming a teacher. Okayously, So I'm
- 23:31Speaker 1: also learning while people are asking me questions, and so
- 23:34Speaker 1: now it's propelling me into this space. This is they
- 23:36Speaker 1: doing homework. I see a book like this. First of all,
- 23:40Speaker 1: it's informative. Secondly, we're in the middle of a COVID
- 23:44Speaker 1: nineteen pandemic. And when the and when the COVID eighteen
- 23:47Speaker 1: pandemic head, it obviously stated that people of color, black
- 23:51Speaker 1: and brown are overtly affected by COVID eighteen. I remember
- 23:57Speaker 1: when the CDC announced in the Atlanta, Georgia, well, I'm
- 23:59Speaker 1: based it's an eight percent of the hospital cases for
- 24:03Speaker 1: COVID eighteen the first week that they started making information
- 24:07Speaker 1: public or African Americans. And then they turned around, they said,
- 24:10Speaker 1: and then I started reading your book, and you're saying
- 24:12Speaker 1: that being a vegan can help, because you said you
- 24:15Speaker 1: state that you have seen countless suffer from the people
- 24:18Speaker 1: you know, countless from diabetes, cancer, obesity, cloud arteri's high
- 24:24Speaker 1: blood pressure, heart disease. This is all what's really basically
- 24:29Speaker 1: either causing African Americans or people of color to get
- 24:32Speaker 1: sick or dying from COVID ninteen has Because of COVID
- 24:37Speaker 1: ninteen has has has been a major push towards you
- 24:40Speaker 1: to get information because you are an expert at this,
- 24:44Speaker 1: and I brought you really on the show to talk
- 24:46Speaker 1: about fear for but also talk about this whole vegan lifestyle,
- 24:51Speaker 1: which can because we've always knows that people of color
- 24:54Speaker 1: have always been uh dramatically criticized for our eating habits. Well,
- 25:00Speaker 1: that is not our faults, and because of slavery, you know,
- 25:05Speaker 1: black faults, we have had to basically take what is
- 25:09Speaker 1: left over, the scraps and it remains, and make two
- 25:12Speaker 1: with that. And that is where we are plagued with
- 25:15Speaker 1: issues because we've been thinking out our our environment. Excuse me,
- 25:19Speaker 1: we've been taken out of our environment, away from our
- 25:22Speaker 1: natural food like vitamin D, away from our natural foods
- 25:26Speaker 1: which is not accessible here in America unless you were
- 25:29Speaker 1: already here as a native American. You know, my my
- 25:33Speaker 1: grandmother was a chocolate American Indian, and so you know,
- 25:38Speaker 1: there's been a lot of confusion about that too, but
- 25:40Speaker 1: that's a whole other conversation. Anyhow, we don't have access.
- 25:47Speaker 1: There are no longer living in nature, but no longer
- 25:50Speaker 1: living near the equator. So we've been given things that
- 25:55Speaker 1: our bodies are not made for. That's number one graphically
- 25:59Speaker 1: and based on half tech, and so of course our
- 26:02Speaker 1: bodies are want to react accordingly if we're not in
- 26:05Speaker 1: the sun as people like they need to be biologically speaking,
- 26:11Speaker 1: and then we suffer as well. Our immune system is compromised.
- 26:16Speaker 1: And so going back to nature and when I see vegan,
- 26:19Speaker 1: that doesn't necessarily mean healthy, but that's the starting point
- 26:22Speaker 1: plant based stuff, because what's happening our food system and
- 26:26Speaker 1: meat and particularly even Spa says, you know, process meat
- 26:30Speaker 1: is ausing cancer and humans and a beets. You know,
- 26:36Speaker 1: I've lost three animals to cancer, and I'm sure that
- 26:39Speaker 1: your reason. So you have that factor, but then you
- 26:43Speaker 1: also have everything and I mentioned regarding have an access,
- 26:47Speaker 1: and then you have economic issues where in the hood
- 26:50Speaker 1: they put liquor stores, you know, and markets and fast
- 26:53Speaker 1: food restaurants not whole foods. So we have a lot
- 26:58Speaker 1: of things that are backward but have been designed that
- 27:01Speaker 1: way for us. To sail. And then we also have
- 27:03Speaker 1: habits that we've adopted not too long ago from slavery
- 27:08Speaker 1: that are hard to break, you know, the white sugar
- 27:11Speaker 1: and everything. But you have a but you have a
- 27:13Speaker 1: particular plan here though, Maya and let because you're your
- 27:20Speaker 1: hot profile, your celebrity, your star and star in the
- 27:24Speaker 1: African American community. All right, how do we know? I'm
- 27:27Speaker 1: not saying it's not out there? And you know, Rushan
- 27:30Speaker 1: just coming to the tape, I've always been a fan
- 27:32Speaker 1: of your brain. Just the first time I've heard the
- 27:34Speaker 1: vegan side of your brain. How do we help get
- 27:37Speaker 1: this information out there? What you be in the face
- 27:40Speaker 1: of it? How can I do that? Can Rushan McDonald
- 27:43Speaker 1: help you? Well? The starter guide is available at Maya
- 27:47Speaker 1: Maya dot com, Forward slash Lifestyle, my social media pages
- 27:53Speaker 1: Maya Planet nine that's with the number nine, and I
- 27:56Speaker 1: conduct much challenges that everyone globally can participate in. I
- 28:01Speaker 1: have lots of incentives and send me lots of goods,
- 28:04Speaker 1: including my free wine of virtual meeting Greek and sometimes
- 28:09Speaker 1: when the world is open, I do one on one
- 28:12Speaker 1: time cook for the winners. Also, we've gone on retreats
- 28:17Speaker 1: in the past and I'm planning on another one of course,
- 28:20Speaker 1: when COVID nineteen, etcetera is over. But that's what you
- 28:24Speaker 1: can do is just spread the words. The start guard unavailable. Okay,
- 28:30Speaker 1: I'm not, but I'm not Maya. I got by the
- 28:33Speaker 1: social by the million social media follows. Can I can
- 28:36Speaker 1: I put your vegan start a kid on my social media?
- 28:41Speaker 1: You absolutely can? This Wednesday, I have a fan club
- 28:46Speaker 1: list that goes out to ninety three thousand fan club members.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Can I drop it in there with sure? So we've
- 28:55Speaker 1: got two things. I'm two for two so far with Maya.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Because you know when I when I look at this
- 29:00Speaker 1: and said, what do vegans eat? Fruit? That's me, fig
- 29:04Speaker 1: that's me, vegetables, nuts, seeds. Uh, you know that. I'm
- 29:08Speaker 1: all up in that first part, you know. So then
- 29:11Speaker 1: they said what vegans don't eat? And they go into
- 29:14Speaker 1: you know, land mammals. Kyle Lamb goat pigs right there.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Pig is pork ribs for me. See that right there.
- 29:21Speaker 1: That's when you start losing rashon McDonald chicken and turkey.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I had that this weekend. But here's a good move.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Here's a good move. You don't have to give up
- 29:32Speaker 1: anything that you already like, okay to go vegan, because
- 29:35Speaker 1: there's a plant based version now available everywhere. But also
- 29:40Speaker 1: you can make with the beings, the nuts, the seeds,
- 29:44Speaker 1: and some nice flur like spelled flower or coconut flower,
- 29:50Speaker 1: chickie flowers, some alternatives to the white flower. Its wild rice,
- 29:54Speaker 1: just black rice that's better for you, while super food
- 29:58Speaker 1: ancient grain that's better for you than the white rice. So,
- 30:01Speaker 1: like before, vegan doesn't necessarily always mean healthy, because there's
- 30:04Speaker 1: a lot of jump food that's vegan. You said vegan donuts,
- 30:07Speaker 1: vegan fried did you say, did you say junk food?
- 30:10Speaker 1: You've vegan tied in the same things. A whole lot
- 30:15Speaker 1: of junk foods, vegan chocolate cakes, this, doughnuts. But not
- 30:21Speaker 1: to have a relationship here now, Mike, you said, we're
- 30:24Speaker 1: jump food and vegan at the same time. But you
- 30:26Speaker 1: can have vegan mac and cheese. You can have vegan
- 30:30Speaker 1: version of Polo Greens, you can have vegan candy bams.
- 30:34Speaker 1: We're just replacing the animal fat based butter with a
- 30:37Speaker 1: vegan butter that's made from plants. It tastes exactly the same. Actually,
- 30:42Speaker 1: because I'm having a good time, I hope you join
- 30:44Speaker 1: this interview because I'm a good time. We have a
- 30:45Speaker 1: good question nowaday, But okay, now, do you do you
- 30:48Speaker 1: have any videos where you cooked stuff? I actually did
- 30:52Speaker 1: my very first virtual cooking session online last Saturday. My goodness,
- 31:00Speaker 1: it was sold out. It was sold out. First of all,
- 31:04Speaker 1: we'll stop, stop too much? You too much? Now? Okay, Now, okay,
- 31:09Speaker 1: you said online and you just so did you do
- 31:11Speaker 1: a zoom registration? What did you do? Yes? Okay. So
- 31:15Speaker 1: I am a member of a platform called Candy and
- 31:18Speaker 1: you can find them at meat Candy on Instagram. And
- 31:23Speaker 1: basically they sent out a letter newsletter of flyers. I
- 31:26Speaker 1: also posted I invite people to come through the virtual
- 31:29Speaker 1: cooking session. There's a link Meet candy dot com. Forward
- 31:33Speaker 1: slash Celebrities, Forward slash cook with Maya. It's how you
- 31:36Speaker 1: book your space. It's only exclusive and limited to twenty
- 31:40Speaker 1: people on the letter time. And so I give them
- 31:43Speaker 1: two weeks to sign up. And what I do is
- 31:46Speaker 1: craft a whole recipe as well as ingredients and tools
- 31:52Speaker 1: supply kit lets. I just posted it. It's on my
- 31:54Speaker 1: Instagram page but as my last post. But I sent
- 31:57Speaker 1: them all the ingredients that they get an event als
- 32:00Speaker 1: we make an advertiser, a man course, and a dessert
- 32:03Speaker 1: live together that they get all the stuff in events
- 32:07Speaker 1: so that they can go shopping and we can cook
- 32:09Speaker 1: simultaneously together. The first hour spent cooking and preparing everything,
- 32:14Speaker 1: and then we eat together for the next thirty minutes
- 32:16Speaker 1: talking chop it up. And then the last thirty minutes
- 32:20Speaker 1: I spent with the Q and A. Okay, I gotta
- 32:26Speaker 1: slow you down, slow you down, see nothing, just see
- 32:29Speaker 1: you and me. We're gonna get along. I know we're
- 32:31Speaker 1: gonna get along. We're gonna be our last call. It's
- 32:34Speaker 1: not gonna be our last call yet, because of the
- 32:36Speaker 1: fact that what you're doing is a whole game. See
- 32:41Speaker 1: you're looking at the guy now who doing a pandemic.
- 32:43Speaker 1: I actually plant it, you know, sage and deal and
- 32:48Speaker 1: halopeenia peppers and tomatoes and in some pop flower pots
- 32:52Speaker 1: in my backyard. You know. So I'm leaning in that direction.
- 32:56Speaker 1: And I was stunned at the harvest that I get
- 32:59Speaker 1: every day from my backyard. I'm not ready for next year.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I'm ready for me some cucumbers. I'm really playing stuff
- 33:06Speaker 1: for next year. And so so what that mean? So
- 33:09Speaker 1: I hear you talking about. Now, I gotta ask this
- 33:11Speaker 1: question not to be embarrassed, not just saying can you cook? Though,
- 33:15Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, I put my foot in my food.
- 33:18Speaker 1: You don't even know what's vegan. Okay, you're talking about
- 33:22Speaker 1: you're talking. I know you are. You know you can
- 33:26Speaker 1: overly embellish disability and stuff like telling you Okay, I'm
- 33:30Speaker 1: telling you. All my friends they're like, oh my gosh,
- 33:33Speaker 1: this is good. My family who eats everything that I
- 33:37Speaker 1: don't eat anything. Because I just want you to social media.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I'm just change this. I'm just change this. I'm just
- 33:41Speaker 1: just right now, Mike. I just want your social media. Okay.
- 33:44Speaker 1: You have a Twitter and you have an Instagram. That's
- 33:46Speaker 1: all I found on Twitter and Instagram. I didn't see
- 33:48Speaker 1: no pictures of food. I didn't see the pictures you
- 33:51Speaker 1: holding food. I just pictures eating food, none of that that.
- 33:57Speaker 1: And you and then you're gonna go, Then you're gonna go.
- 33:59Speaker 1: I put my foot in it, and this is what
- 34:01Speaker 1: I do. Rashan see, I'll see. That's like you're talking
- 34:04Speaker 1: smack to me, Maya. I don't talk smack. I'll back
- 34:08Speaker 1: it up. Okay. I am a walker, not a talker. Okay, okay,
- 34:11Speaker 1: I'll see a lot of good looking photos of you,
- 34:13Speaker 1: But I just don't see a lot of good looking
- 34:15Speaker 1: photos if you're eating or sitting down at the table.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Because you go to my website, at reshaw website, go
- 34:20Speaker 1: to Rashan if you have time. I'm now you're busy
- 34:23Speaker 1: to go to at Sean McDonald. You're gonna see pas,
- 34:27Speaker 1: You're gonna see food. You're gonna get hungry looking at
- 34:30Speaker 1: my timeline. I'm just gonna people tell that. Go to
- 34:34Speaker 1: my last post and swipe left to speak what I
- 34:37Speaker 1: mean to see all this goodness and it's healthy. And
- 34:41Speaker 1: it's healthy because because see, I'm going to see like
- 34:44Speaker 1: in my continer every o Monday, I draw all my
- 34:46Speaker 1: recordings from my podcast Money Making Conversations, and I bring
- 34:50Speaker 1: the fruit. I bring nuts, you know, and I'm a
- 34:53Speaker 1: little small jar. I have watermelon, I have grapes. I
- 34:56Speaker 1: have bananas with me and all that good stuff. I
- 34:58Speaker 1: hate some corn bread and a little red very cupcake already,
- 35:02Speaker 1: but you know I have to do like that. But
- 35:04Speaker 1: you say right here, dairy and egg free pancakes and waffles,
- 35:09Speaker 1: fredge toast and doughnuts, dairy and egg free. You've made these.
- 35:14Speaker 1: You made some good tasting dairy free pancakes, Maya. Yes,
- 35:19Speaker 1: you know why because this plant based elk is on
- 35:22Speaker 1: the coconut cash, shoe hemp, and even oat milk. Oat
- 35:25Speaker 1: milk is my favorite milk, and so I use that
- 35:28Speaker 1: because the dairy industry is first of all cruel, but
- 35:30Speaker 1: they also put antibiotics, steroids all in it, and there's
- 35:35Speaker 1: plenty of hormones and it's supposed to grow a baby
- 35:38Speaker 1: chass to five hundred pounds in one year, and that's
- 35:40Speaker 1: where our kids are getting rested at nine years old,
- 35:43Speaker 1: and all kinds of other stuff, and itto the very
- 35:46Speaker 1: cool industry when you really understand what really happens behind
- 35:49Speaker 1: closed doors. And so I am spiritually and because of
- 35:53Speaker 1: what I do know, which most people are not taught.
- 35:55Speaker 1: But also it's that it has on the human body.
- 35:58Speaker 1: And there are plant based alternatives which are much healthier
- 36:01Speaker 1: for you and won't lead to cancer. And for ex abstitute,
- 36:05Speaker 1: there's all kinds of except products that are egg free.
- 36:10Speaker 1: You know, eggs have high cholesterol, and that's an egg
- 36:13Speaker 1: problem in in my family activity, and I want to
- 36:16Speaker 1: avoid that and break the generational course. But also that
- 36:19Speaker 1: industry is full of quality as well. And that's all
- 36:22Speaker 1: that I started. God, I'm I'm gonna say too much,
- 36:24Speaker 1: pot Well is that maya? Okay? I'm a fan now, Okay,
- 36:29Speaker 1: I've always been a fan, but I'm now you got
- 36:31Speaker 1: me in the you know the side of the table.
- 36:33Speaker 1: I'm sitting at the table eating with you now here. Now,
- 36:36Speaker 1: I would you go toe a little backstory of Rashan.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I have a new office in Atlanta, George. It has
- 36:41Speaker 1: a fully built out kitchen, okay. And the reason I
- 36:45Speaker 1: built that fully built out that kitchen was that you know,
- 36:47Speaker 1: I'm I'm an award winning baker. Like I said, you
