- 0:32Speaker 1: Great Uh is a cornerback in the National Football League.
- 0:38Speaker 1: He played collegue football for the Townsend Tigers as in Maryland.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks, one of my
- 0:45Speaker 1: favorite teams, in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.
- 0:49Speaker 1: He now plays for the Tennessee Titans. Tensee Titan used
- 0:51Speaker 1: to be in Houston, used to be usting all this,
- 0:54Speaker 1: so you know, I got like I got kind of
- 0:57Speaker 1: like a feeling for Tennessee Titans. You know, kind of
- 0:59Speaker 1: like I'm balanced between I love hate them. They kind
- 1:03Speaker 1: of owe Ailers, but data Texans, so so I gotta
- 1:06Speaker 1: love hate relationship with him already. And Uh. He's on
- 1:11Speaker 1: the show to talk about staying focused and overcoming the
- 1:14Speaker 1: ours and professional football is program Simple Greatness is a
- 1:18Speaker 1: youth outreach company that focuses on the uplifting of the
- 1:21Speaker 1: youth in our communities. Please welcome to money making Conversation,
- 1:25Speaker 1: Ty Smith. Hey, how are you doing? Wait? Are what
- 1:30Speaker 1: city are you calling me from right now? I'm in
- 1:33Speaker 1: Santa Cruz, California. I'm I'm out your training to your training?
- 1:38Speaker 1: What's uh getting ready for? What? What? What's? What's okay?
- 1:43Speaker 1: I was. I had to get them. I had to
- 1:46Speaker 1: get those three letters right because I messed him up
- 1:47Speaker 1: the other day when I was interviewing a anohing young
- 1:49Speaker 1: man from the National Football League, I said, PTO, so
- 1:52Speaker 1: you started laughing at me. He's I can use those days.
- 1:59Speaker 1: But so does it ever stop? Does the training ever stop?
- 2:02Speaker 1: His year round? Huh? Here's yeah, it's really it's really
- 2:04Speaker 1: year around that you just gotta you gotta know when
- 2:07Speaker 1: that rest your body, how to build it back up
- 2:10Speaker 1: to to get it ready for the season and all that.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So it's it's definitely a year around. So the O
- 2:15Speaker 1: T A S that really is? I thought the ot
- 2:18Speaker 1: is you supposed to go to O t A S
- 2:19Speaker 1: to get didn't shape and training, But you're saying that
- 2:23Speaker 1: you have to train for the O t S and
- 2:25Speaker 1: then O t S is to prepare you for preseason
- 2:27Speaker 1: and preceded to prepare you for the football season. Yeah, exactly.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Really when do you rest, sir? When do you rest?
- 2:39Speaker 1: You might you might rest uh of a year, a
- 2:42Speaker 1: total of year. You might rest for like a month.
- 2:45Speaker 1: You might rest for a total of a month. Because
- 2:47Speaker 1: right after the season, most guys take like, you know,
- 2:50Speaker 1: a couple of weeks off and do completely nothing that
- 2:52Speaker 1: they started doing, like little foundation stuff to building a
- 2:56Speaker 1: foundation back up. So so what's the what's the what's
- 3:00Speaker 1: offseason like for you? We're gonna talk about the many
- 3:02Speaker 1: programs you're involved, but I would like the people know
- 3:05Speaker 1: about you as an individual and also the fact that
- 3:08Speaker 1: you know, you weren't you were not a high first
- 3:11Speaker 1: round draft pick, you were not from one of those
- 3:13Speaker 1: major UH power five schools, and you've been successful in
- 3:17Speaker 1: life towns and tigers and towns in Maryland. How does
- 3:21Speaker 1: a young man from that school make it in the
- 3:24Speaker 1: National Football League? Um? Really just not not giving up,
- 3:29Speaker 1: not uh not quitting, um, just just pushing and understanding
- 3:35Speaker 1: and believing that you know, creative things are coming, especially
- 3:38Speaker 1: to those who worked and put in the work and
- 3:42Speaker 1: for me especially, you know, praying and stand in the
- 3:44Speaker 1: word and just just ultimately just believing that the greatest
- 3:48Speaker 1: teams are coming. Now you were drafted in the fifth round.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So that's that's pretty that's a pretty nice check. Fifth round.
- 3:54Speaker 1: That's fifth round. And then you know you went for
- 3:56Speaker 1: a power school today. Invite you to the Combine. Yeah,
- 4:00Speaker 1: I got invited to comb That was key right there,
- 4:02Speaker 1: getting inviteds to Combine because you got to show off
- 4:05Speaker 1: your speed, your agility and all that stuff. That helped you, right, yeah, yeah,
- 4:09Speaker 1: I believe it helped. And then so so to get
- 4:13Speaker 1: there and now you now you would Seattle and now
- 4:17Speaker 1: you went to Titans. So when you with Seattle, how
- 4:20Speaker 1: was that first experience when you came into the camp?
- 4:22Speaker 1: You your Fearth round draft pick you way up and
- 4:25Speaker 1: you know you went from the east to the very west.
- 4:29Speaker 1: It's a total total culture change. Have to mine it's
- 4:33Speaker 1: a culture change. Yeah, So how did you deal with that?
- 4:36Speaker 1: You know, because your friends, you know, you need support,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you need support your new teammates and you how did
- 4:41Speaker 1: that work for you? Um? They endn't know working out
- 4:45Speaker 1: pretty well because of the team. I went to we
- 4:47Speaker 1: had a lot of better own leadership, especially that we've
- 4:51Speaker 1: been a TB. I had veteran leaders like Earl Thomas,
- 4:55Speaker 1: Richard Sherman, Cam Chanfer and um yeah and so also
- 5:01Speaker 1: a clearer development guy Mo Kelly out in Seattle. He
- 5:06Speaker 1: is a big help and helping like the rookies and
- 5:09Speaker 1: the other guys get adjusted to the to the new
- 5:12Speaker 1: you know, the new community and just the new. Uh.
- 5:15Speaker 1: The business of the NFL, not just you know, college
- 5:19Speaker 1: and NFL is different because you know it's a business
- 5:22Speaker 1: when he comes to the NFL. We' the great thing
- 5:25Speaker 1: about you going to Seattle, you got to see and
- 5:29Speaker 1: be around some real personalities, people who speak their mind.
- 5:33Speaker 1: You know Bennett Beef his a linement. You know he
- 5:35Speaker 1: real personality, you said, Richard Simmons, Stanford Grad, real personality.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Earl Thomas eb had don't forget the man, the quarterback,
- 5:45Speaker 1: real Russell Russell Wilson, a lot of personality. Why receiver
- 5:51Speaker 1: Doug All these guys did that? Did that help you
- 5:56Speaker 1: to understand that you could have a because you came
- 5:58Speaker 1: into the into of the now snow Football League right
- 6:01Speaker 1: at the right at the Colin Kapernack moment, and it
- 6:04Speaker 1: kind of changed the whole perception of the quote unquote
- 6:08Speaker 1: black athlete in the National Football League. And I am
- 6:11Speaker 1: I saying that right or my my misstating something. Can
- 6:14Speaker 1: you explain that a little more, meaning that, you know,
- 6:17Speaker 1: we became outspoken. You know, they were the protests, And
- 6:20Speaker 1: I'm not trying to put you on the spot. I'm
- 6:22Speaker 1: just saying, I'm just in my perception of that. You know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: before before that period, just play football, play nobody. No,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you went out there, got that check, you got hurt,
- 6:32Speaker 1: you complained, you know you you would complain. But this
- 6:35Speaker 1: time politics, I guess socialism or social so so the
- 6:39Speaker 1: social climate that was happening, industries came inside the stadium.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Did that have an effect on you? And not saying uh,
- 6:46Speaker 1: not trying to put your spot, just saying that it
- 6:48Speaker 1: did create a culture change in the in the league?
- 6:51Speaker 1: Did it? Uh? Yeah? I feel like it. It's just um,
- 6:56Speaker 1: I feel like that athletes speak out, sir, on on
- 7:00Speaker 1: political issues and social issues and knowing that we can
- 7:05Speaker 1: use our platform to bring awareness and change to what
- 7:09Speaker 1: we believe in and what we see out there. Because
- 7:11Speaker 1: you gotta think about a lot of athletes come from
- 7:14Speaker 1: those communities that they are being affected in the negative
- 7:18Speaker 1: way and they just want to bring life to They
- 7:20Speaker 1: just want to bring life to the situation. I like,
- 7:24Speaker 1: can you explain that a little bit more so? Tide's
- 7:27Speaker 1: not gonna just throw out a response on something because
- 7:29Speaker 1: what you just say, brother, Okay, I got a career.
- 7:31Speaker 1: You ain't messing me up with this interview. What have
- 7:33Speaker 1: you say? Something wrong? The reason the reason I brought
- 7:35Speaker 1: that up because you're involved with the Habitats for Humanity
- 7:39Speaker 1: and then your other program, and these are really socially
- 7:42Speaker 1: conscious programs, like well, first of all, habits Habitat for
- 7:46Speaker 1: your manity, you have to work. That's not something you
- 7:50Speaker 1: used to go around just just just grin and take pictures.
- 7:52Speaker 1: They're they're actually building homes. Correct. Yeah, that's why, um,
- 7:59Speaker 1: I love kind of touch for many because it's more
- 8:01Speaker 1: like you really put you getting your hands dirty, like
- 8:04Speaker 1: you were there building a foundation, putting your hands on
- 8:07Speaker 1: the house, and like you're you're there with the family
- 8:09Speaker 1: who's going to live in the house. So you know
- 8:10Speaker 1: what I'm saying, you were handed them building the house, uh,
- 8:14Speaker 1: cutting wood, putting the doors up now and the all
- 8:17Speaker 1: the stuff on the roof. That's why I really like
- 8:20Speaker 1: them because, like like I said, it's more of a
- 8:22Speaker 1: hands on think. It's not just she's just throwing money
- 8:25Speaker 1: to a to a thing, like you're actually helping volunteer
- 8:29Speaker 1: and you know that. I feel like that goes along way. Okay, cool,
- 8:32Speaker 1: We've been back with more with my man tie Um
- 8:35Speaker 1: Cornerback to see Titans, hap At, Tat for Humanity, Simple Greatness. Uh,
- 8:44Speaker 1: who cares? Who gives back? I just for showing McDonald
- 8:49Speaker 1: on the phone with my neck. My guess is a
- 8:52Speaker 1: he's Cornerback and then philanthropists. He's in San Jose, California
- 8:56Speaker 1: right now calling in because he's still training. But they're
- 8:58Speaker 1: upcoming h O t s. But the Tennessee Titans. The
- 9:01Speaker 1: reason I got him on the show us to talk
- 9:03Speaker 1: about his uh, his get back, his get back programs,
- 9:05Speaker 1: get back to the community. He has a program called
- 9:08Speaker 1: Simple Greatness. It's a youth all three company that focuses
- 9:11Speaker 1: on the uplifting of the youth in our communities. And
- 9:14Speaker 1: also he does a lot of great work for the
- 9:16Speaker 1: Habitats for Humanity that was created by former President Jimmy
- 9:20Speaker 1: Carter out of Atlanta, Georgia. Program I've always heard about
- 9:23Speaker 1: and you're wanted the spokesperson. How did you become a
- 9:26Speaker 1: spokesperson for that particular franchise? Uh? I just became a spokesperson,
- 9:32Speaker 1: but you know, firsts become involved with it and and
- 9:35Speaker 1: really and really seeing the genuinenessness in their uh in
- 9:41Speaker 1: their and their company and know and really seeing like
- 9:44Speaker 1: how they take care And He's like, they don't just
- 9:47Speaker 1: do the homes for the family. They have them take
- 9:50Speaker 1: classes just to learn how to how they're gonna maintain
- 9:53Speaker 1: the house, how to how to you know, do well
- 9:56Speaker 1: with their finances for all that, Like they really prepped
- 9:59Speaker 1: them for the place instead of just giving them the place.
- 10:02Speaker 1: You know, that's important because you can give people something
- 10:06Speaker 1: just because it's nice, don't mean they can take care
- 10:08Speaker 1: of it or know how to take care of it.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And so how many homes have you been involved in?
- 10:13Speaker 1: How many families you've involved in? And how many years
- 10:16Speaker 1: Hill built? Like five homes? Uh, and that's been over
- 10:21Speaker 1: the past three years that I've been involved with. Now
- 10:26Speaker 1: you just you kind of like just casually said that
- 10:28Speaker 1: five homes. You know, I've had I've had three homes built.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I know, you know I'm kind of you know, you
- 10:37Speaker 1: gotta be started because you just say five homes. Because
- 10:42Speaker 1: when I'm when I'm doing it, it's like your football player.
- 10:45Speaker 1: A couple of stop stops out that you are a
- 10:47Speaker 1: football player. You don't have that big of a window
- 10:49Speaker 1: to Bill Holmes. Okay, and you you're taking your free
- 10:53Speaker 1: times and want people to hear this. Okay, he's already
- 10:56Speaker 1: told us the schedule by the month off you finished
- 10:59Speaker 1: playing football to get better ready for O T S.
- 11:01Speaker 1: O T S leads into preseason, and preseason leads into
- 11:04Speaker 1: the professional season. And that if you're fortunately, you're gonna
- 11:07Speaker 1: play all the way through January. If you're going to
- 11:09Speaker 1: Super Bowl, you're playing in February. And this man out
- 11:11Speaker 1: here building homes for people he don't even know. That's key.
- 11:18Speaker 1: That's a real life. I want people to understand that
- 11:20Speaker 1: that you said, Richard, I could easily just give away,
- 11:24Speaker 1: give a check out. I could easily just uh, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 1: show up with a check. You know what, a big
- 11:28Speaker 1: old check. They just write right the number on it.
- 11:30Speaker 1: You go, hey, put it on social media. You've done
- 11:32Speaker 1: your thing, but you've chosen to say I want to
- 11:34Speaker 1: be physically involved. I want to physically shake the people
- 11:38Speaker 1: hands who I'm helping and also educate them to have
- 11:40Speaker 1: a better means of understand how they can be successful
- 11:43Speaker 1: in life. What did that what did that value system
- 11:46Speaker 1: come from? Uh? It comes to comes from my parents,
- 11:50Speaker 1: my mom and dad, you know, just uh the way
- 11:53Speaker 1: they raised us. You know, it's always been giving and uh,
- 11:56Speaker 1: you know there's a lot of there's a lot of
- 11:58Speaker 1: people that's out there doing worse than like, you know,
- 12:01Speaker 1: there's um people out there who need who needs help.
- 12:04Speaker 1: And you know, when we think that we're doing doing bad,
- 12:08Speaker 1: like there's always somebody else there's doing words that they
- 12:11Speaker 1: might they might have a happy spirit spirit. You know
- 12:15Speaker 1: that really came from my parents and my family. Awesome, Well,
- 12:18Speaker 1: I applaud them. I applaud you for being a person
- 12:22Speaker 1: that you are. Because, like I said, what time of
- 12:24Speaker 1: year do they do? They pick a certain time of
- 12:26Speaker 1: the year that they are start to construction or are
- 12:31Speaker 1: what time of year these hands built? Because I'm suously
- 12:33Speaker 1: I built during the wintertime right now, in the wintertime,
- 12:37Speaker 1: they work out of warehouse and they might you know,
- 12:40Speaker 1: build up the frames of the house in the warehouse
- 12:44Speaker 1: and then when they come springtime, that's when they actually
- 12:47Speaker 1: go out there and uh start constructing on the houses.
- 12:51Speaker 1: They're always constructing on the houses, but like I said,
- 12:53Speaker 1: in the wintertimes when they're maybe in the warehouse doing
- 12:56Speaker 1: the building, and they transferred that stuff to to the
- 13:00Speaker 1: to the actual houses in the community. Have a test
- 13:02Speaker 1: for humanity, community of houses. Do you want to get
- 13:07Speaker 1: into that type of lifestyle business after you finished playing football?
- 13:12Speaker 1: But construction, home maintenance or you you you developing the
- 13:17Speaker 1: skill set in the mindset? Yeah, I see myself, uh
- 13:21Speaker 1: you know, try and do something along the lines of
- 13:24Speaker 1: the Steve Smith where he uh he takes homes and
- 13:29Speaker 1: flips them. He provides them to single single single brothers
- 13:33Speaker 1: and single single parents and he lessens the rent for
- 13:37Speaker 1: them to make it affordable for them. I could I
- 13:39Speaker 1: could shoot myself doing something along the lines of that
- 13:42Speaker 1: was also well done with a ward done. Yeah. Yeah,
- 13:45Speaker 1: he's beat him build like a hundred BP plus houses
- 13:48Speaker 1: or something like that, and yeah, I definitely coldcheat myself
- 13:51Speaker 1: doing One of the most famous homes he had was
- 13:54Speaker 1: Shaun Watson started quarterback for the Houston Texas So that
- 13:58Speaker 1: lets you know when you get back, you just know,
- 14:00Speaker 1: never know who you're affecting. You don't give that young
- 14:02Speaker 1: man is not to starting quarterback or leading Clemson Tigers
- 14:07Speaker 1: to a national championship over Alabama. So you know that
- 14:11Speaker 1: what might be considered small really does have a big
- 14:14Speaker 1: impact on the people that you touch every day. And
- 14:16Speaker 1: I tell us about simple greatness. UM. Simple greatness was
- 14:21Speaker 1: originally founded by me to describe me, just to describe
- 14:27Speaker 1: my trials and tribulations. In my adversities, I went to
- 14:30Speaker 1: you know, although I was I was drafted fifth round
- 14:33Speaker 1: by Seattle, I was also cut, you know, cut by
- 14:36Speaker 1: Seattle twice, and I had to go on the Redskins
- 14:41Speaker 1: my second year. I was on the practice squad there
- 14:43Speaker 1: in the year. Uh. Once I finished that year there,
- 14:45Speaker 1: that's when I signed with the Titans. And I've been
- 14:48Speaker 1: with the tightest the last two years, about to go
- 14:50Speaker 1: on my third year. UM. I used that, like I said,
- 14:54Speaker 1: to describe me, knowing that, you know, despite my adversities,
- 14:59Speaker 1: that I myself open, I'm going to keep pushing regardless
- 15:02Speaker 1: of wherever I go through. UM and the simple describes
- 15:05Speaker 1: me as a person. I'm simple and the great and
- 15:08Speaker 1: describes what I what I what I was starting for.
- 15:12Speaker 1: But also what's already noticed in me, and I believe
- 15:14Speaker 1: that's in everybody. Um, it's just about you trying to
- 15:18Speaker 1: tap into it and trying to find that within yourself.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Now a lot of athletes do foundations. Uh what is
- 15:25Speaker 1: your foundation structure? As your friend is mother or father
- 15:30Speaker 1: or your sister, brother are a relative? Who who runs
- 15:34Speaker 1: your foundation? Uh? Me? Really? Me? And uh family, family
- 15:41Speaker 1: and friends. I say name with me because it was,
- 15:45Speaker 1: like I said, I can't I can't describe it no
- 15:47Speaker 1: better than me and how I go about life and
- 15:50Speaker 1: how I go to things. Well, you're kind of doing
- 15:53Speaker 1: it anyway when you're talking about the habitats for humanity.
- 15:57Speaker 1: There are similarities, correct, aid and that I try to
- 16:02Speaker 1: uh connect with companies that I believe has the same
- 16:05Speaker 1: value system as myself and and and that value the
- 16:10Speaker 1: system is what Uh that value system, I would say,
- 16:15Speaker 1: is a genuine care for people. Sir. It's not about
- 16:21Speaker 1: it's about it's not about money. I know, you know
- 16:25Speaker 1: in this world a lot of people get lost in
- 16:27Speaker 1: the money aspect, thinking that money and power, you know,
- 16:31Speaker 1: saying it it'll lead you long way. If I believe
- 16:34Speaker 1: like some value things like you no love, compassion, forgiveness. Uh,
- 16:40Speaker 1: the thing that intangible you know that that we can't
- 16:43Speaker 1: we can't really measure that. The greatness and people, you know,
- 16:46Speaker 1: stuff like that, we don't when when I look at
- 16:49Speaker 1: the well, I'm on the phone with Tyd Smith. He's
- 16:51Speaker 1: uh pointerback for the Tennessee Titans. Was drafted in the
- 16:56Speaker 1: fifth round by the Celsee Hawks. Like he just stated,
- 16:59Speaker 1: you know it was guarantees. He got cut by Seattle,
- 17:02Speaker 1: then he was on the practice squad for the Redskins,
- 17:04Speaker 1: then he got picked up by the Tennessee Titan. When
- 17:06Speaker 1: you're going through those trials and tribulations, what was your
- 17:09Speaker 1: my You're an athlete, you know you have a short window.
- 17:11Speaker 1: You compete against other athletes and like I said, you
- 17:14Speaker 1: know at towns and you're the fastest person on the team,
- 17:17Speaker 1: maybe the stronger person on the team. Then you come
- 17:18Speaker 1: to the NFL and you're like you First you go
- 17:21Speaker 1: to the combine, you go wow. Then you go to
- 17:23Speaker 1: the NFL, you go wow wow. So what keeps you
- 17:27Speaker 1: mentally motivated that you can win in that environment? UM,
- 17:34Speaker 1: I wouldn't say how motivated becausess I feel like that's
- 17:37Speaker 1: motivation is just the emotion that comes and goes. I'm
- 17:40Speaker 1: just I'm dedicated. I'm dedicated to be the best that
- 17:45Speaker 1: I know I can be and I can said I
- 17:47Speaker 1: believe that, Uh, I can be one of the best
- 17:50Speaker 1: to ever play this game. And that's where that's why
- 17:53Speaker 1: I put the day in the day out. UM. I
- 17:57Speaker 1: cherished the small things like the train, the moments and training,
- 18:01Speaker 1: and I feel like that those those small things add
- 18:05Speaker 1: up to bigger things down the line. Like when when
- 18:08Speaker 1: things do is this we turn my way and people
- 18:11Speaker 1: see the player that I am being, that I can
- 18:13Speaker 1: be and will be. There will be accumulation of all
