- 0:00Luke chapter 14 It happened that when he went into the House of
- 0:04one of the leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat
- 0:06bread, they were watching him closely, and there in front of
- 0:10him was a man suffering from dropsy.
- 0:12And Jesus answered and spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees,
- 0:15saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?
- 0:18That they kept silent. And he took hold of him and
- 0:20healed him, and sent him away. And he said to them, Which one
- 0:24of you will have a sun or an ox fall into a well, and will not
- 0:28immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?
- 0:31And they could make no reply to this.
- 0:34And he began speaking a parable to the invited guest when he
- 0:36noticed how they had been picking out the places of honour
- 0:39at the table, saying to them, When you are invited by someone
- 0:42to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honour for someone
- 0:46more distinguished than you may have been invited by him.
- 0:49And he who invited you both will come and say to you, give your
- 0:51place to this man, and then in disgrace you proceed to occupy
- 0:55the last place. But when you are invited, go and
- 0:57recline at the last place, so that when the one who invites
- 1:00you comes, he may say to you, Friend, move up higher.
- 1:04Then you will have honor in the sight of all who are at the
- 1:06table with you. For everyone who exalts himself
- 1:09will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
- 1:13And he also went on to say to the one who had invited him,
- 1:16When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your
- 1:18friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors,
- 1:21otherwise they may also invite you in return, and that will be
- 1:24your repayment. But when you give a reception,
- 1:27invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you
- 1:30will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you,
- 1:34for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.
- 1:37When one of those who were reclining at the table with him
- 1:39heard this, he said to him, Blessed is everyone who will eat
- 1:42bread in the Kingdom of God. But he said to him, a man was
- 1:46giving a big dinner and he invited many, and at the dinner
- 1:49hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, come
- 1:52for everything is ready now. But they all alike began to make
- 1:55excuses. The first one said to him, I
- 1:58have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it,
- 2:01please consider me excused. Another one said I have bought 5
- 2:05yoke of oxen and I am going to try them out, please consider me
- 2:08excused. Another one said I have married
- 2:11a wife and for that reason I cannot come.
- 2:14And the slave came back and reported this to his master.
- 2:17Then the head of the household became angry, and said to his
- 2:19slave, Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city,
- 2:22and bring in here the poor, and crippled, and blind and lame.
- 2:26And the slave said, Master, what you commanded has been done, and
- 2:29still there is room. The master said to the slave, Go
- 2:32out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to
- 2:35come in, so that my house may be filled.
- 2:38For I tell you, none of none of those men who were invited shall
- 2:41taste of my dinner. Now large crowds were going
- 2:44along with him, and he turned and said to them, If anyone
- 2:47comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and
- 2:50wife, and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his
- 2:53own life, he cannot be my disciple.
- 2:56Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot
- 2:59be my disciple. For which one of you, when he
- 3:01wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the
- 3:04cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
- 3:07Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to
- 3:10finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, saying This man
- 3:14began to build and was not able to finish.
- 3:17Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle,
- 3:20will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong
- 3:22enough with 10,000 men to encounter the thing coming
- 3:25against him with 20,000. Or else, while the other is
- 3:28still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of
- 3:31peace. So then none of you can be my
- 3:34disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.
- 3:38Therefore salt is good. But if even salt has become
- 3:41tasteless, with what will it be seasoned?
- 3:44It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile.
- 3:47It is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him
- 3:50hear.
