- 0:31Speaker 1: of my favorite actors. He served as an executive producer
- 0:35Speaker 1: and starred on one of my popular a very popular
- 0:37Speaker 1: movie called what Sony called The Perfect Guy, which open
- 0:41Speaker 1: number one at the box office. When I work with him,
- 0:44Speaker 1: executive produced the movie, very popular movie. I think everybody
- 0:47Speaker 1: knows Think like a Man, and Think like a Man too.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And you're started about Last Night and action vampire movie, Underworld, Semma,
- 0:54Speaker 1: Underworld Guide. You know if you know Underworld, Underworld Awaken,
- 0:57Speaker 1: he was in there. I was like man Underwear Awaken.
- 0:59Speaker 1: That's my movie. His television credits include The Good Wife,
- 1:03Speaker 1: Common Law, Almost Human, which I really loved that was
- 1:05Speaker 1: on Fox, and Sleeper Sale which is on Showtime Networks.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Another one of those movies. Seriously, I really like and
- 1:12Speaker 1: he was nominated for a Golden Globe a war He
- 1:14Speaker 1: is on the show today discussed several projects in TV
- 1:17Speaker 1: and film, including the Sony thriller The Intruder opts my
- 1:21Speaker 1: man Dennis Quaid. He's a Texan, That's why I call
- 1:24Speaker 1: him my man. I'm a Houston Texan. And Megan good
- 1:27Speaker 1: which his theaters may three, please welcome to money making Conversations.
- 1:31Speaker 1: My man, Michael Eally, what's up? I'm really really good Man.
- 1:39Speaker 1: So on thing I always like about to Michael, you
- 1:41Speaker 1: keep a low key personality, but you can do so
- 1:44Speaker 1: many different roles. How does how does that? How does
- 1:47Speaker 1: that work? You know? You know a good question. I
- 1:50Speaker 1: think for me, I think if you live your life
- 1:54Speaker 1: out loud, it's really hard to to slip into characters
- 2:00Speaker 1: um that are you know, kind of intricate and unique
- 2:06Speaker 1: and it's it's I always say that, you know, it's
- 2:10Speaker 1: important to take breaks and to kind of live life
- 2:13Speaker 1: a little bit so that when you try to reflect life, uh,
- 2:17Speaker 1: you have something to draw from, you know. I think
- 2:20Speaker 1: in this climate right now, everybody's just obsessed with social
- 2:25Speaker 1: media and everything and putting it out there all the time,
- 2:28Speaker 1: putting their lives up there all the time that you know,
- 2:30Speaker 1: it's it's it's hard to step back and actually live
- 2:33Speaker 1: and it just observed for a little while. And because
- 2:36Speaker 1: it's my job to kind of observe life and then
- 2:38Speaker 1: turn around and and reflected on the screen. For me,
- 2:42Speaker 1: I just have to live a little bit differently. In
- 2:44Speaker 1: addition to the fact that I'm pretty much probably one
- 2:48Speaker 1: of the few private people in this business. Very true
- 2:52Speaker 1: because social media. I had social media. Wouldn't you want
- 2:56Speaker 1: a big social media guy? When I first met you?
- 2:59Speaker 1: And I wasn't you know? That was a funny conversation
- 3:05Speaker 1: because I I we sat down and I just we
- 3:07Speaker 1: talked about social media. Why did you resist to social media?
- 3:11Speaker 1: And how are you using social media to your advantage now?
- 3:15Speaker 1: Because you're private, that's one thing about you. You really yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 1: you really are. If you if you ever around him,
- 3:20Speaker 1: he's not a guy that's gonna seek out a party,
- 3:22Speaker 1: gonna seek out publicity. He's on the red carpet because
- 3:25Speaker 1: he's there for that movie. He's that type of guy.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Now your social media, You've got a million followers on Instagram?
- 3:32Speaker 1: Mm hmm, you know. Um, first and foremost, I think
- 3:37Speaker 1: I got more I just think they won't. Whatever they won't,
- 3:40Speaker 1: they increase my numbers. So it is what it is.
- 3:43Speaker 1: But that being said, he never thought I'd say that.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Uh you know, um no, listen, you know when we
- 3:52Speaker 1: sat down, I think there was a fear on my
- 3:56Speaker 1: part of feeling like the whole thing, the whole structure
- 4:03Speaker 1: of blueprint of social media is about approval from me,
- 4:08Speaker 1: you know, when you get likes and followers and all
- 4:10Speaker 1: of that stuff. I've just lived my life and I've
- 4:14Speaker 1: kind of lived through my career in a position where
- 4:17Speaker 1: I never really wanted to need that. There's something disturbing
- 4:23Speaker 1: about needing followers and needing likes and in that sense
- 4:28Speaker 1: of approval. And I think, you know, you can see
- 4:31Speaker 1: it with what's happening to the youth. You know, suicide
- 4:34Speaker 1: rates are up and cyber believing is up, and we're
- 4:38Speaker 1: raising a generation of kids right now who seek approval
- 4:43Speaker 1: and not just from their inner circle, they seek approval
- 4:46Speaker 1: from the public. And when I grew up, that wasn't
- 4:51Speaker 1: you know your inner circle was was it right? That
- 4:55Speaker 1: was that was it? It was your friends, you know.
- 4:57Speaker 1: But now I think there's something, you know, and perhaps
- 5:01Speaker 1: clinically wrong with seeking public approval. It really is, it
- 5:07Speaker 1: really is. And I think that, uh, you know, like
- 5:09Speaker 1: I have a daughter, she's in college and she lives
- 5:11Speaker 1: a life on her phone and I and I constantly
- 5:14Speaker 1: pull her off of it just in conversation. I make
- 5:17Speaker 1: her watch the news. That's the news is reality. I
- 5:20Speaker 1: was the news is reality. I don't know what's on
- 5:22Speaker 1: that phone. It's not because you know they people go
- 5:24Speaker 1: on these phones and google health cures for cancer and
- 5:28Speaker 1: all types of illnesses because they think and it could
- 5:31Speaker 1: be written by a grandma and idahope, and you think
- 5:33Speaker 1: that's that's legitimate. And that's where you really say that
- 5:37Speaker 1: the character of understanding what's going on. You have to
- 5:40Speaker 1: live your life and you keep it structured. Now, when
- 5:42Speaker 1: I when I when I say that, you know, like
- 5:45Speaker 1: I said, he was in the Underworld. You know, you
- 5:47Speaker 1: played a policeman in that. Then you you can do comedy,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know, and then you can be a violet, you know,
- 5:54Speaker 1: a stalking type character. Then you could be suave, could
- 5:58Speaker 1: come on, Michael, that's a lot, man, that's a lot.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I can might. I might can do just the angry guy.
- 6:03Speaker 1: That's me Rissell. I could do angry. But how are
- 6:06Speaker 1: you doing all these roles? Man? What are you? What? What?
- 6:10Speaker 1: What are you? What? Is what's prepping you to be
- 6:11Speaker 1: able to pull those different characters off? Honestly, you sean
- 6:15Speaker 1: like what you're saying right now is probably the highest
- 6:19Speaker 1: compliment you can give me, right and that if you
- 6:23Speaker 1: tell me I can play all of these characters in
- 6:27Speaker 1: a credible way. That was That was the goal that
- 6:31Speaker 1: I set for myself when I got started. I didn't
- 6:34Speaker 1: want to just be, especially with the way that I look.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I didn't want to just be, you know, this romantic
- 6:41Speaker 1: leading man for the rest of my career. I didn't
- 6:45Speaker 1: if I if I didn't love acting, perhaps I could
- 6:48Speaker 1: have just made a living doing right. But for me,
- 6:51Speaker 1: it's about stepping into different people's shoes and circumstances. When
- 6:57Speaker 1: I did for Colored Girls, you know, for me, that
- 7:01Speaker 1: was that was massive because it gave me the opportunity
- 7:04Speaker 1: to step into the shoes of someone who on the
- 7:07Speaker 1: surface seems like the worst person in the world, but
- 7:13Speaker 1: in truth, you know, everybody has I'm not saying everybody
- 7:17Speaker 1: has an excuse, but the character of both really in
- 7:22Speaker 1: and for Colored Girls, he was suffering from PTSD in
- 7:27Speaker 1: the commentary of that is what are we doing with
- 7:31Speaker 1: our veterans? Because sending people to wars seems like a
- 7:34Speaker 1: great idea and a very valiant thing to do, But
- 7:37Speaker 1: what are the consequences, the real life consequences that are
- 7:41Speaker 1: affecting the soldiers that are going there and the secondary
- 7:45Speaker 1: PTSD which is affecting their families and their caretakers when
- 7:50Speaker 1: they come home. And so for me, it was not
- 7:54Speaker 1: you know what I do is also an opportunity to
- 7:56Speaker 1: kind of shed light on what's really going on. And
- 8:00Speaker 1: you know, I just never really wanted to just sit
- 8:04Speaker 1: back and kind of, you know, play one character. If
- 8:08Speaker 1: that was the case, I would have been still playing
- 8:11Speaker 1: Ricky from Barbershop right now, right right, you know what
- 8:15Speaker 1: I mean? That Cybord character almost human right when like yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 1: trader android and that you know that that and that
- 8:28Speaker 1: that's that to me is like the one job that
- 8:31Speaker 1: kind of got away from me because I mean, obviously
- 8:33Speaker 1: they canceled it. But I really like the commentary of
- 8:37Speaker 1: that one because ultimately, you know, here I am playing
- 8:41Speaker 1: an android who's facing discrimination. It's like I got it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I can tap into this. I know, I know a
- 8:51Speaker 1: whole species of people who can tap into this going
- 8:55Speaker 1: to focus. My man Michael Eale has established himself as
- 8:58Speaker 1: one of Hollywood's leading means, seamlessly jumping from TV to film.
- 9:02Speaker 1: He will soon be started in the upcoming sony thriller
- 9:05Speaker 1: The Intrue to opposite my man Dennis Quaid and Making
- 9:07Speaker 1: Good which his theaters May three. When we come back.
- 9:10Speaker 1: That's all we're gonna talk about this movie. Because see,
- 9:13Speaker 1: whenever I buy a new house, I get nervous about
- 9:15Speaker 1: my locks on my doors, so so I always make
- 9:18Speaker 1: sure they all get changed. And so I saw the
- 9:21Speaker 1: trailer and we're gonna talk about more with my man
- 9:24Speaker 1: Michael Eally, Mr Social Media, Michael Eli, my man, Hi,
- 9:31Speaker 1: This Rashan McDonald and you're listening to money making conversation.
- 9:34Speaker 1: It's the home of information if you want to know
- 9:36Speaker 1: information to get comments or get support or motivation and
- 9:39Speaker 1: entertainment as well as entrepreneurship on the phone. Is very talented.
- 9:44Speaker 1: One of the one of the leading men who seems
- 9:46Speaker 1: like it stated earlier prior to the break or jumped
- 9:49Speaker 1: from TV to film and I I had him doing
- 9:53Speaker 1: a comedy, I had him doing a romantic lead. I've
- 9:55Speaker 1: seen him be uh be a sale may be the
- 9:59Speaker 1: dual roles. He plays an android. He he plays a
- 10:03Speaker 1: guy that you you hate you dated because next that
- 10:06Speaker 1: he's clingy, you know, and now he's on this show
- 10:10Speaker 1: with he's on this next movie where my man Dennis Quade,
- 10:13Speaker 1: The Intruder and the very talented and lovely Megan Good,
- 10:17Speaker 1: which comes out May three from Sony. Tell us about
- 10:20Speaker 1: that movie, Mike, Yeah, The Intruder is its kind of
- 10:26Speaker 1: interesting thriller where you know, you kind of take the
- 10:31Speaker 1: American dream of you know, uh, you know, being a
- 10:35Speaker 1: newly wed couple and you go out to buy your
- 10:38Speaker 1: house and start your family, and you're holding onto the
- 10:41Speaker 1: dream and you're doing all the right things, you know
- 10:43Speaker 1: what I mean, Like you're investing in yourself. And you
- 10:47Speaker 1: turn around and that, uh, that previous owner has found
- 10:51Speaker 1: a way to turn that dream into a nightmare. And
- 10:54Speaker 1: that's that's essentially what happens in this in this particular film,
- 10:59Speaker 1: And what I love most about it is that there
- 11:02Speaker 1: are no you know, bulletproof suits and special effects or
- 11:07Speaker 1: anything like that. This is a grounded, grounded human story
- 11:12Speaker 1: and it's it's rooted in reality because it could happen
- 11:15Speaker 1: to anyone. It could happen to anyone who is, you know,
- 11:20Speaker 1: trying to buy a house and not perhaps doing the
- 11:24Speaker 1: research you should do on the previous right, right, and
- 11:29Speaker 1: and learning that you know, maybe this ain't a great
- 11:31Speaker 1: fit right And and I like, I bought at least
- 11:34Speaker 1: four homes in my life, and there is always that
- 11:38Speaker 1: to me, you know, because I immediately get security, I
- 11:40Speaker 1: get I get my A D T H A security
- 11:45Speaker 1: longe system set up, and I immediately changed all the locks.
- 11:48Speaker 1: So that basically plays it. I played this movie plays
- 11:51Speaker 1: int I think that anybody's fears about home ownership or
- 11:56Speaker 1: moving into a condo or an apartment, and and somebody
- 12:00Speaker 1: coming back knocking on the door, they want to come in.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And basically that's what this movie is about. Somebody wanted
- 12:05Speaker 1: to come in and you say, hey, can you just
- 12:08Speaker 1: move on? Did you just move home? You know? I
- 12:12Speaker 1: take it one step further, Sean, and I say, it's
- 12:15Speaker 1: more I mean Dennis for Dennis Quay's character, he plays
- 12:18Speaker 1: a guy in Charlie Peck, it's more about for him
- 12:22Speaker 1: not letting go of what old, not letting go of
- 12:29Speaker 1: you know, the past, and you know, thinking he's got
- 12:33Speaker 1: a second shot, you know, in terms of his future.
- 12:38Speaker 1: So yeah, it's it's it's it's dark in that way.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It's it's it's dark in that way. And I think,
- 12:44Speaker 1: you know, they'll definitely be people who watched this movie
- 12:47Speaker 1: and we'll see, um, you know, some contemporary theme that
- 12:51Speaker 1: that that holds you as we speaking about that when
- 12:55Speaker 1: you say that, you know, because you know, I think
- 12:58Speaker 1: that you really came to my by teaching from an
- 13:01Speaker 1: acting standpoint on a sleeper sale, you know, and you
- 13:04Speaker 1: were nominated for a Golden Globe and and really the
- 13:08Speaker 1: reason why because because this character I know, just in
- 13:11Speaker 1: African American, I know that I'm gonna how is he
- 13:14Speaker 1: playing this role? You know, and and it's so believable
- 13:18Speaker 1: with such a high level of credibility. And so when
- 13:21Speaker 1: I go back to you and I'm just yeah, when
- 13:24Speaker 1: I because I had a Franker face on it on
- 13:26Speaker 1: the radio, and I've had Curtis Curtis uh underminding, Curtis
- 13:31Speaker 1: Hall that all these all these individuals just like you
- 13:33Speaker 1: that can just jump from role in the role and
- 13:36Speaker 1: just y'all just regular people, man, not just regular people,
- 13:40Speaker 1: but when you take on these characters, they become very rememberable.
- 13:44Speaker 1: How how do you do that? Because I asked them
- 13:47Speaker 1: each one of them the same question, but your younger
- 13:49Speaker 1: version of them, so your body of Marga is gonna
- 13:51Speaker 1: be crazy when you get their age. How do you
- 13:54Speaker 1: do that? It's a god giving gift. I gotta be
- 14:03Speaker 1: honest with you. I think it's a guy giving gift.
- 14:05Speaker 1: And I think, you know, with the proper training. M
- 14:09Speaker 1: Vandi actually came and directed an episode of Sleeper, so
- 14:12Speaker 1: I love working with him. Um, you know you can.
- 14:17Speaker 1: You're actually trained to do this right. So, UM, the
- 14:21Speaker 1: key is to find something that you can relate to
- 14:28Speaker 1: in each character. To go back to what we were
- 14:31Speaker 1: saying for the Intruder. I was actually renovating my house
- 14:39Speaker 1: when this movie came to me, and I remember feeling like,
- 14:47Speaker 1: what I love about this story is that my wife
- 14:50Speaker 1: and I had just been out in the street looking
- 14:53Speaker 1: at houses trying to find, you know, because we were
- 14:55Speaker 1: about to have another baby, and we were like, we
- 14:57Speaker 1: need some more space, and you know, let's look at
- 15:00Speaker 1: houses that we don't have to renovate, and da da
- 15:01Speaker 1: da da da, and ultimately like we couldn't find, you know.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I was more like my character Scott I'm walking around
- 15:11Speaker 1: the houses like I ain't really trying to pay this
- 15:13Speaker 1: money today, Like I'm not really trying to pay this
- 15:18Speaker 1: money for I don't really like I don't like not
- 15:21Speaker 1: knowing what's behind these walls, you know what I mean,
- 15:25Speaker 1: Because a house can be a money pick. You know,
- 15:29Speaker 1: it can look amazing, and then you know, then things
- 15:31Speaker 1: started going wrong and it's like, well, you don't know
- 15:34Speaker 1: what's behind those walls, and renovating or building a house
- 15:37Speaker 1: from the ground up was the only way in which
- 15:40Speaker 1: you can kind of know what you're working with. So
- 15:45Speaker 1: for me, in terms of understanding the character of Scott
- 15:49Speaker 1: in this movie, it was the subject matter was relevant
- 15:55Speaker 1: to me recently, and so it was like the perfect
- 15:58Speaker 1: way for me to jump into this character and play
- 16:01Speaker 1: it the right way. Also, just being married was enough
- 16:04Speaker 1: because as you're seeing in the movie, my character Scott,
- 16:08Speaker 1: he's not thrilled with the house, but because his lovely
- 16:12Speaker 1: wife I'm making Good really really wants this house, he
- 16:16Speaker 1: goes along with it absolutely And we all been there.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Absolutely happy wife, happy life. That's exactly right. And this
- 16:24Speaker 1: movie is coming out May third, is called The Inn.
- 16:27Speaker 1: It's quite making Good. I want to I want to
- 16:30Speaker 1: flipped the switch a little bit, because you got another
- 16:32Speaker 1: project that's coming down called Jacob's Ladder right now, you'll
- 16:37Speaker 1: be executive producing that project. What happens when you put
- 16:40Speaker 1: that hat on, the executive producer hat on? Oh good question. Um.
- 16:44Speaker 1: First of all, um, you finally have some stay and
- 16:50Speaker 1: as an actor, a lot of people don't understand his
- 16:52Speaker 1: actors were typically just worked for higher people, right, And
- 16:56Speaker 1: in the last decade or so, more actors have become
- 16:59Speaker 1: more involved off and invested in their careers by producing.
- 17:04Speaker 1: And the beautiful thing about producing is that you're not
- 17:08Speaker 1: just being told what to do. You have input regarding
- 17:13Speaker 1: story development, casting, um uh, promotion, release. So it's basically
- 17:22Speaker 1: you start to learn how to make your baby your baby.
- 17:27Speaker 1: You learn how to really make it your baby. And
- 17:29Speaker 1: I will say that if I'm gonna bank on anyone,
- 17:34Speaker 1: I'd rather bank on myself. And and that's, you know,
- 17:39Speaker 1: in in the hard work that I'm going to put
- 17:41Speaker 1: in in terms of story development and and all of that.
- 17:44Speaker 1: And I'm you know, it doesn't mean you don't have
- 17:46Speaker 1: to work with people. You do. You have to work
- 17:48Speaker 1: with you know, p and A people and make sure
- 17:51Speaker 1: because they're they're the experts at what they do. But
- 17:54Speaker 1: at the same time, you're not just being kind of
- 17:57Speaker 1: told what to do. And that was the way it
- 18:00Speaker 1: was for many years. And now actors having active say
- 18:05Speaker 1: in what you know, how a movie is promoted, the storyline,
- 18:10Speaker 1: all of that, all of that is big is better
- 18:12Speaker 1: for us now and that makes you feel good because
- 18:15Speaker 1: of the fact that he's absolutely right. Uh. I've been
- 18:17Speaker 1: a sitcom writer, I've done talk shows, I've done everything
- 18:21Speaker 1: until you put on that producer title and active you
- 18:24Speaker 1: you really just come on the set. No, no, you can't.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Don't do the worry about that line. We got you.
- 18:30Speaker 1: We're changed the lines and you this is what you're
- 18:32Speaker 1: gonna say tomorrow. You know that's what you're gonna say.
- 18:36Speaker 1: And you know this the funny part. They'll tell you, Okay,
- 18:39Speaker 1: you can do that line, but they lineup make the movies.
- 18:43Speaker 1: When you're executive, do you say you can do that line?
- 18:46Speaker 1: Your line will make the movie? To make the movie.
- 18:49Speaker 1: That's a great way of putting it. It is. It
- 18:51Speaker 1: is a way to be much more assertive. And what
- 18:54Speaker 1: I learned from Perfect Guy was it actually makes you
- 18:58Speaker 1: more invested in looting the movie now obviously done a
- 19:02Speaker 1: bunch of movies with with Will Packer, and you know
- 19:05Speaker 1: you end up, you know, promoting the movie a lot anyway.
- 19:09Speaker 1: But well he learned from that is you're much more
- 19:13Speaker 1: invested in the promotion of the movie because you've been
- 19:17Speaker 1: more invested in the project as a whole. It's it's
- 19:22Speaker 1: it makes so much more sense. Thank you, makes so
- 19:27Speaker 1: much more sense. Yeah, I got my man here, you know,
