- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. And when you're ready, let's
- 0:30dive into God's Word together. In Acts chapter 10, we again see
- 0:45the gospel advancing further and further out.
- 0:48This chapter starts with two visions.
- 0:50First, a centurion named Cornelius, a Gentile who feared
- 0:53God and was generous to the Jewish people, had a vision from
- 0:56the Lord in which he's told to send for the apostle Peter and
- 1:00is told exactly where he will be.
- 1:02So Cornelius sends out three men to track down Peter and see what
- 1:05it is that God has for Cornelius through Peter.
- 1:08The very next day, while Cornelius men are on the road,
- 1:11Peter himself has a vision. While on the housetop praying,
- 1:15Peter gets hungry, but before any food is ready, the Lord
- 1:18shows him a vision. Listen to what the text says
- 1:20that he saw. And he saw the sky opened up,
- 1:24and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four
- 1:27corners to the ground, and there were in it all kinds of four
- 1:30footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth, and
- 1:33birds of the air. A voice came to him.
- 1:35Get up, Peter, kill and eat. But Peter said, by no means
- 1:39Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean.
- 1:42Again a voice came to him a second time.
- 1:45What God has cleansed no longer consider unholy.
- 1:48This happened three times. And immediately the object was
- 1:51taken up into the sky. Now Peter is unsure of what to
- 1:55make of this vision, but about that time the three men sent
- 1:57from Cornelius arrive at the house where Peter's staying.
- 2:00The Holy Spirit then reveals to Peter that he need not fear or
- 2:04have misgivings about their arrival.
- 2:06They have been sent by God. So Peter greets them and goes
- 2:09with them to Cornelius. Now listen to the exchange that
- 2:12happens once Peter arrives at Cornelius house.
- 2:15What we see here is that God is at work in something much more
- 2:18important than just what foods are clean or unclean.
- 2:21Listen along. When Peter entered, Cornelius
- 2:24met him and fell at his feet and worshipped him.
- 2:27But Peter raised him up, saying, Stand up, I too am just a man.
- 2:30As he talked with him, he entered and found many people
- 2:33assembled, and he said to them, You yourselves know how unlawful
- 2:36it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to
- 2:39visit him. And yet God has shown me that I
- 2:42should not call any man unholy or unclean.
- 2:45That is why I came without even raising any objection when I was
- 2:48sent for. So I ask, for what reason you
- 2:51have sent for me? Did you catch that?
- 2:54This vision of the sheet and the unclean animals had a deeper
- 2:56meaning than just declaring all foods clean, though it certainly
- 2:59did that as well. God was talking about people.
- 3:03God was opening a door to the Gentiles that the Jews believed
- 3:07was closed. Listen to what Peter says to the
- 3:09gathered crowd just a few verses later.
- 3:12I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show
- 3:15partiality, but in every nation the man who fears him and does
- 3:19what is right is welcome to him. God was showing Peter that this
- 3:23message of Jesus, this gospel of the Kingdom, was not limited to
- 3:27the Jews only. No, this good news is for all
- 3:30the nations. And then the text describes the
- 3:33Holy Spirit falling on those gathered Gentiles.
- 3:36God had granted faith to these outsiders.
- 3:39He'd welcomed in those who had been seen as excluded.
- 3:42The gospel of Jesus was not and is not a local or tribal gospel.
- 3:46No, this is good news for all the world.
- 3:49This invitation to believe in Jesus and his finished work is
- 3:52open to all, and God demonstrates both his power and
- 3:56His love as He extends His Kingdom far beyond what Peter
- 3:59and the disciples imagined it could be.
- 4:02This Kingdom has extended all the way to you and to me,
- 4:05outsiders brought near by the blood of Jesus.
- 4:08Praise the Lord for His grace and for His mercy, and declare
- 4:12that grace and mercy far and wide, that all who would turn to
- 4:16Jesus are welcome in Him.
