- 2:09Speaker 1: I'm happy to be uh, you know, first of all,
- 2:11Speaker 1: let me just talk about I I gotta get this
- 2:12Speaker 1: first part of our relationship. I've been done and and
- 2:16Speaker 1: and uh. And on the Jamie Fox Show, a young
- 2:19Speaker 1: man came into my life. I was co executive producer
- 2:21Speaker 1: to the Jamie Fox Show and he was the executive
- 2:23Speaker 1: producer Jamie Fox Show at the time. His name is
- 2:25Speaker 1: Bennie Richburg. And he really he changed my life as
- 2:29Speaker 1: a writer. And uh. And he's always said, because you know, uh,
- 2:33Speaker 1: you know, Pam Grid, that's my good best friend. I go,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Pam Gird your friend Benny, because Bennie short he's showed,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you know, he needs the sexiest looking dude, Benny Betty.
- 2:41Speaker 1: You know Pam Grid. Yeah, man, Pam Grid my good friend.
- 2:44Speaker 1: He always would tell me that, And then I'm damn
- 2:47Speaker 1: you know what I believe? Afterwhile, then I'm looking at
- 2:49Speaker 1: her own on the Wendy Williams Show and she brings
- 2:52Speaker 1: up Bennie Richberg name because they are good friends. And
- 2:55Speaker 1: so so tell me, how did you and Bennie Richberg?
- 2:58Speaker 1: This this incredible sitcom write an incredible man become friends
- 3:04Speaker 1: well getting rich for salp my autobiography had just been
- 3:07Speaker 1: published by Grand Central Publishing, and it was in a
- 3:11Speaker 1: store for one of the industry bookstore called Samuel French.
- 3:15Speaker 1: He saw my book. It was number twenty on the
- 3:18Speaker 1: New York Times bestseller list, and he lost his mind,
- 3:21Speaker 1: jumped out of the car, ran into the store, bought
- 3:25Speaker 1: the book, read it, and optioned it that night. And
- 3:29Speaker 1: I said, do you know you'll be writing like Quentin
- 3:31Speaker 1: did from the female side of your brain? He said,
- 3:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it. And Thenny it took you two years.
- 3:37Speaker 1: But he jumped in the car with his with his
- 3:41Speaker 1: favorite dog, drove out to California and a blizzard from
- 3:44Speaker 1: California to Colorado, saw a mountain lion run across the
- 3:47Speaker 1: road and said, no, she don't live out here, and
- 3:51Speaker 1: he's getting He found out me as she do, and
- 3:54Speaker 1: he lowered the whole camped down and went through the
- 4:00Speaker 1: hire history of my family, the Black West Underground Railroad,
- 4:04Speaker 1: writing the my autobiography, adopting into a screenplay, and did
- 4:08Speaker 1: the most brilliant job. Took him two years. Talk about
- 4:11Speaker 1: a professor, a teacher, I call him Lord of the
- 4:16Speaker 1: Pen he's so good at what he did, and he
- 4:19Speaker 1: was so committed and came out with one of the
- 4:23Speaker 1: best screenplays. And we not only have we become friends,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I have watched him and heard about your legacy, his legacy,
- 4:30Speaker 1: Will Smith, legacy, Jazzy, Jeff, everybody who um you know
- 4:34Speaker 1: they kind of grew up together, were around And so
- 4:38Speaker 1: when he brought up the book with Jazzy and Iris
- 4:44Speaker 1: was around him heard himself interests that I have to
- 4:46Speaker 1: be in a pen Green movie. I want Interest to
- 4:50Speaker 1: play my grandfather, Daddy Ray, who was the first feminist
- 4:53Speaker 1: in my life, who taught all of us girls how
- 4:55Speaker 1: to hunt and fish and shoot and drive and be
- 4:59Speaker 1: self sufficient. He said, if you're a woman knows how
- 5:01Speaker 1: to do something, a man will respect you. And that
- 5:04Speaker 1: has been my mantra motto, uh, my threat of since then.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And I want to tell you it was. It has
- 5:13Speaker 1: been such a great partnership because he taught me a lot. Yes, yes,
- 5:18Speaker 1: you know, because I had wasn't some screenwriting scholarships because
- 5:22Speaker 1: I wanted to enhance my career not only as an actor,
- 5:25Speaker 1: butt a writer and a director. And I want a
- 5:28Speaker 1: couple of grants and scholarships and He just made me
- 5:32Speaker 1: a better writer. And I hope you got to meet him.
- 5:37Speaker 1: You got to meet him. You already know him. You've
- 5:38Speaker 1: got to talk to him and find out what he's
- 5:40Speaker 1: been to him, because, let me tell you, he is
- 5:42Speaker 1: just a wealth of knowledge and will really assist people
- 5:46Speaker 1: in writing, not only for blogs or uh newspapers, magazine, screenplays, novel.
- 5:54Speaker 1: He went through a great process and I learned, and
- 5:56Speaker 1: I want to tell you there's nothing better than finding
- 5:58Speaker 1: someone who is generous shooting their gift. This is Bennie Richberg.
- 6:02Speaker 1: She's she's talking about Richburg and Benny Richburg. Just the
- 6:05Speaker 1: backup the story, just in case people just came online.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Um talent sitcom writer. I met him on the Jamie
- 6:11Speaker 1: Fox Show. Didn't even know it, walked into the writer's
- 6:14Speaker 1: room and he welcomed me with open arm and he
- 6:16Speaker 1: taught me because I was just one of the confident guys.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And like like Mrs Greer saying, is that you think
- 6:22Speaker 1: you know until you work with an expert or somebody
- 6:25Speaker 1: who understands the levels. Myra brocka Kill was on that. Yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 1: and you know he started out with Fresh Prince for
- 6:33Speaker 1: five years, The Martin Show for five years and the
- 6:37Speaker 1: Jamie Fox Show for five years. So I just said, well,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I know you were considering some other writers, but Bennie,
- 6:44Speaker 1: I think you can do it. And when you talk
- 6:46Speaker 1: to him and he will have you Howard, because he says,
- 6:48Speaker 1: I can't live pang down. I have to see. Yes,
- 6:52Speaker 1: I know you can do it. I've watched you write
- 6:54Speaker 1: the show for many characters and out of some drama
- 6:59Speaker 1: is humor and so there's a lot of sad time.
- 7:02Speaker 1: There's a lot of humor in in my life story,
- 7:05Speaker 1: there's a lot of tragedy. But you will you will
- 7:08Speaker 1: have the beats. I think you can handle the beats
- 7:11Speaker 1: of something that's tragic and the comedic and satirical. I
- 7:15Speaker 1: know you can do it. And he didn't let me down.
- 7:20Speaker 1: People see this. He was so good that Jay Farrell
- 7:24Speaker 1: when um are you here? Absolutely, I'm here, Come on,
- 7:29Speaker 1: Lee Lee Ross of of Caller, who wrote of some
- 7:33Speaker 1: of the shows, the video games are Call of Duty
- 7:36Speaker 1: for Infinity would he designed a video game for me?
- 7:41Speaker 1: And the video game is for a family, you know.
- 7:43Speaker 1: It's it's one of those for PlayStation four and it's
- 7:47Speaker 1: called shall Leon Shuffle And I'm this this Seafood is
- 7:52Speaker 1: master of martial arts, and I teach you my disciples
- 7:57Speaker 1: to kill zombie rat. I'm hearing this voice in the
- 8:04Speaker 1: studio leg and it's Jay Sarah and all of a sudden,
- 8:09Speaker 1: like oh, something hit me. His voice, his manner, his performance.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I said, I think I found my Richard prayer. And
- 8:18Speaker 1: I ran out the door, stood in the parking lot
- 8:21Speaker 1: screaming the be a beginning. You gotta meet Jay tayl.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I think I heard Richard, but I think we found him.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I think I know he's going to be a great Richard.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And they met and they read the scenes and they
- 8:30Speaker 1: worked something and Jay I said, Jay, you gotta He says,
- 8:33Speaker 1: I gotta do with you for you, and so Ja
- 8:35Speaker 1: Sare is gonna play with your prayer. You're just outbo
- 8:39Speaker 1: was gonna play my grandfather. Let me tell you all
- 8:43Speaker 1: because of the beating, I will just tell you that
- 8:45Speaker 1: Jay Farrell, don't know who he is from a star
- 8:47Speaker 1: of Saturday Live, can do anybody voice, especially washing Oh
- 8:51Speaker 1: he can knock. He's so good. He has over two
- 8:55Speaker 1: hundred characterizations. But when he didn't even do it acterrization
- 9:01Speaker 1: of Richard, he basically channeled all everything that I told
- 9:06Speaker 1: him about Richard and what he read about and the screenplay,
- 9:10Speaker 1: it just jumped off. And when he had certain body
- 9:14Speaker 1: movements and and facial expressions, My god, I'm not kidding.
- 9:22Speaker 1: He's gonna be nominated. He gonna take it, he gonna
- 9:26Speaker 1: he gonna take it. He's gonna walk. And if I
- 9:28Speaker 1: can find when it can help us find our camera.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Dobson who played with clear Patrick Jones and you stop
- 9:39Speaker 1: stop Kareem doji bar. I think we found him. He
- 9:44Speaker 1: was going to find up Freddie Prince. And then the
- 9:47Speaker 1: most exciting character was the agent John Gaines. He was
- 9:51Speaker 1: a very game of as he was. He was the
- 9:53Speaker 1: most powerful agent at a p A in the industry.
- 9:59Speaker 1: He at me camera, Richard Roundtree, who was shafts the case,
- 10:03Speaker 1: Todeve Martin, and John Candy. He had all of us
- 10:06Speaker 1: who were basically being hot, bankable actors at that time.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I would love to have Yan RELs play him cool.
- 10:14Speaker 1: One minute, we're gonna come back. Hey, we're gonna come back.
- 10:18Speaker 1: One minute, we're gonna do a break, and I'm gonna
- 10:20Speaker 1: come back and we're gonna do another ten minute breaks.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I'm not letting you go. I'm I'm gonna have a
- 10:24Speaker 1: relationship with PA group and I'll come back. We'll be
- 10:26Speaker 1: right back with more pas, right back, more money making conversations.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I'm she's on the phone. We just wrapped up the
- 10:38Speaker 1: first half of our interview. She's a movie legend, Blaze
- 10:41Speaker 1: the trail for all actresses. She made be Jella jealous
- 10:44Speaker 1: when I was young when she started dating Freddy Prance.
- 10:47Speaker 1: You know, I was just so mad, like I had
- 10:49Speaker 1: a shot. You know. She's the official ambassador and spokesperson
- 10:52Speaker 1: for brown Sugar, the new streaming service from Bounce TV,
- 10:56Speaker 1: featuring the biggest collection of the baddest African American movies
- 10:59Speaker 1: of all time. That is such a cute promo commercial.
- 11:03Speaker 1: You land on that couch looking all hot and bothered.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Pam Brown Chicken tell us about that op. Round Sugar
- 11:12Speaker 1: is like Netflix but blacker okay, and it has the
- 11:19Speaker 1: largest largest inventory catalog of not only the movies that war,
- 11:26Speaker 1: coin black exploitation, action, comedy musicals. Um. It is one
- 11:32Speaker 1: of the most holific uh streaming service that you can have.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Because you couldn't have it, you wouldn't have enough room
- 11:38Speaker 1: in your house. Plus my mom could not see most
- 11:41Speaker 1: of the movies that I did or anyone did because
- 11:44Speaker 1: she was, you know, taking care of children. So now
- 11:47Speaker 1: at eight nine, we have these movie festivals with her
- 11:50Speaker 1: and all her ninety and year old friends. They come
- 11:53Speaker 1: over and see all the movies that evoked such great memories.
- 11:57Speaker 1: You can be literally Tyson, j Zerogo, Billy D Williams,
- 12:01Speaker 1: all my movies, everybody's movies, documentaries as well from Michael Jackson. Uh,
- 12:09Speaker 1: there's just it has just grown. And the one good
- 12:13Speaker 1: thing that I brought to them when they brought their
- 12:16Speaker 1: their concept to me, as I said, it's important after
- 12:19Speaker 1: the red carpet is over and the premier is over
- 12:22Speaker 1: the film. If you don't have a wealth of money
- 12:26Speaker 1: to keep promoting image and the brand, you can't. And
- 12:29Speaker 1: so they will be helping to promote the brand of
- 12:33Speaker 1: the black actor, the pop culture, black directors and producers, music, style, clothing,
- 12:40Speaker 1: all of the pop culture. So that we can leverage
- 12:43Speaker 1: two more movies, a viability, a bank ability. That's why
- 12:47Speaker 1: I'm on your show. So that will be more Black Panthers,
- 12:50Speaker 1: They'll be more movies of afrocentric content. Well, you know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I feel it perfect time. I feel it all started.
- 12:57Speaker 1: I feel with hidden Figures and Hid Figures can even
- 13:01Speaker 1: before that, because before Hidden Figures. You know, if you
- 13:06Speaker 1: look at the films that Denzel has been in, yes,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you know, uh we can go back from you know
- 13:13Speaker 1: I'm saying is that you know Denzel, that Samuel Jackson,
- 13:17Speaker 1: but that he hadn't Figures, the Moonlighting in the Black Panthers,
- 13:21Speaker 1: all these are just these are not bankable stars. They
- 13:24Speaker 1: were out there and taking these movies and winning Oscar
- 13:27Speaker 1: Oscar Oscar for their for their work and all these things.
- 13:30Speaker 1: It's that, It's just I feel that this is perfect
- 13:32Speaker 1: timing because of the fact that it is so topical.
- 13:35Speaker 1: It's so you know, like like I said that if
- 13:38Speaker 1: your life the brand those movies there, I enjoy them.
- 13:42Speaker 1: I really get a kick out of The music is
- 13:43Speaker 1: amazing if you want to amazing, and the inspiration of
- 13:48Speaker 1: the films and the music and the overall pop cultures.
- 13:53Speaker 1: My films are not playing in the Netherlands. I know
- 13:56Speaker 1: they should. I'm sure you do you remember your movie?
- 14:00Speaker 1: Do you remember? Do you remember that scene in coffee?
- 14:02Speaker 1: You know, I believe I believe it's coffee I saw
- 14:04Speaker 1: the other day. Well, you know, when when he's trying
- 14:07Speaker 1: to convince you to put down that gun, and you're
- 14:10Speaker 1: about to lord that gun. And then and then, and
- 14:13Speaker 1: then you realize he's cheating on you because that woman
- 14:17Speaker 1: come out of the bedroom upstairs and you go. I said,
- 14:20Speaker 1: don't Lord of the gun, even though I've seen that
- 14:21Speaker 1: movie so many times. I said, don't lord the gun.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Don't lord of the gun. Because he was a good
- 14:25Speaker 1: slick talker. He was a good talker. Are you kidding me?
- 14:28Speaker 1: And she shot it, she shot it, she shot it.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I love, I love your career. I love I love,
- 14:36Speaker 1: I loved you. I had been let me tell you,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I've been blessed and the journey has been fantastic. But
- 14:41Speaker 1: what I also want to bring up, because of the
- 14:44Speaker 1: money making entity that our films have provided, is our
- 14:48Speaker 1: movies would stay in the theaters for so long. Usually
- 14:51Speaker 1: they expected in our movies in the theater one week. However,
- 14:56Speaker 1: our movies, mind Jim's friends, he's in cameras, we'd be
- 15:00Speaker 1: in the movies for at least eight weeks, keeping out
- 15:03Speaker 1: the other mainstream movies. And so when Jack Silverman of
- 15:07Speaker 1: The Silverman uh movie theater distribution, they had theaters all
- 15:11Speaker 1: around the country, he would say pam your movies just
- 15:14Speaker 1: staying longer, and people gonna get mad at you because
- 15:17Speaker 1: we're not letting other movies because you will stay long
- 15:20Speaker 1: and make of money. And so out of that, out
- 15:23Speaker 1: of the necessity becomes genius. So they started developing the
- 15:26Speaker 1: multiplex there, so you can see a black film and
- 15:32Speaker 1: the Asian film, a martial arts film, a Disney film,
- 15:35Speaker 1: a child film, a dately. You can see different types
- 15:38Speaker 1: of movies. And back then they started to make like
- 15:41Speaker 1: maybe five or six in the city and then the suburbs,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and then they realized it was such a money making venture.
- 15:49Speaker 1: They started making movie theaters that now gone from one
- 15:55Speaker 1: theater to another to see two movies in one day,
- 15:58Speaker 1: many times because because that's what I'm in, because of
- 16:02Speaker 1: our success, because that's how I watched a movie. I
- 16:05Speaker 1: go and see one movie, as the Majestic in Houston, Texas,
- 16:07Speaker 1: I go and see one movie and walk out, and
- 16:09Speaker 1: then I saw Shaft that way, I saw Another Professor,
- 16:13Speaker 1: that way, I saw I saw Truck, I saw all
- 16:15Speaker 1: those movies. And you're right, it was it was. It
- 16:19Speaker 1: was a period where you just walked this so one
- 16:21Speaker 1: movie and you walked out. It was no multiplex. We
- 16:24Speaker 1: helped invent the multi theater plex, the black film, the
- 16:28Speaker 1: ethocentric pop cultural film, helped invent almost the fourth hand.
- 16:33Speaker 1: You gotta do this so you can make more money,
- 16:36Speaker 1: and we are the ones that provided that in potential.
- 16:39Speaker 1: You got an extra thing happening here. We talked about
- 16:41Speaker 1: the Brown Sugar app We talked about the biopic of
- 16:44Speaker 1: your life. You got a movie coming out with Diane Keaton,
- 16:46Speaker 1: who's one of my favorite actresses. I love her to
- 16:48Speaker 1: and and a series with Fox cat get to that.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I want to go to them one at a time.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Let's talk about Diane Keaton and then we're gonna go
- 16:55Speaker 1: with bless This Blessed the Mess on Fox in February,
- 16:58Speaker 1: talk about Diane Keaton's let me tell you we were
- 17:02Speaker 1: separated at birth. I'm my kid were We are so
- 17:06Speaker 1: funny and crazy and wearing hats and just you know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: but we're very generous, very giving, and we both drink
- 17:12Speaker 1: red wine with ice cubes in it. That drives people crazy.
- 17:15Speaker 1: But she's sorely funny. She gives more than one fifty percent.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And that's what the actors that we just give so
- 17:23Speaker 1: much until we're exhausted and It was such a great
- 17:27Speaker 1: She's always on my bucket list to work with she
- 17:30Speaker 1: and Meryl Street and I want to I want to
- 17:32Speaker 1: direct Viola Davis. I mean, I've got a list. But
- 17:35Speaker 1: let me tell you're working with her sometimes you just
- 17:38Speaker 1: laugh so hard you hammle lose a kidney on this.
- 17:41Speaker 1: And she didn't made me laugh all damn day. But
- 17:43Speaker 1: she's so funny and so generous. It was great to
- 17:46Speaker 1: work with her and Jackie We we were in Real
- 17:48Speaker 1: Perlman as well. Now, bless the mess on Fox, and
- 17:53Speaker 1: this mess it takes like it's me and Lake Bell
- 17:58Speaker 1: and Dak Shepherd and Ed. They gored Jr. And Lake
- 18:02Speaker 1: and back leave New York. Broke been too disillusion driving
- 18:09Speaker 1: back to his aunt's farm in Nebraska. And they got
- 18:13Speaker 1: to come and deal with me. And they think they're
- 18:16Speaker 1: gonna bring some slick city mess. Come on, now, I
- 18:21Speaker 1: bring my country behind to this character, which a lot
- 18:26Speaker 1: of people haven't seen unless they've come here. Been he's
- 18:29Speaker 1: seen it. Then he has seen deer fighting on the property,
- 18:33Speaker 1: a mountain, lions horses show up, there's buffalo turkey. That's
- 18:36Speaker 1: all kinds of he says. He says, yeah, she really
- 18:39Speaker 1: lived out here because it keeps my instinct shirt to
- 18:42Speaker 1: live in a place that so can be so dangerous.
- 18:44Speaker 1: It scares some of my friends who have been ro blancos.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I have to walk them out to their car. But anyway,
- 18:51Speaker 1: and I got a single uncle, I've gotta I've got
- 18:57Speaker 1: my father wants to which you learned, you know, be
- 19:00Speaker 1: y'all on a date or something like that. And then
- 19:02Speaker 1: I met one uncle at a reception at a book signing,
- 19:07Speaker 1: and he said, well, you know, do you have a
- 19:09Speaker 1: lot of guns that as well? Yeah, Stevens the Gulls
- 19:12Speaker 1: giving me a gun at above the Lawn. I got
- 19:14Speaker 1: my gun out of Miami Vice and you know, everyone
- 19:17Speaker 1: giving me a gun or something from the show. My
- 19:19Speaker 1: grandfather gave me his punting rifles thirty sixes. But I said,
- 19:23Speaker 1: but don't worry about my guns, just worry about my chainsaw.
- 19:27Speaker 1: I love you, Okay. Here's here I own the phone
- 19:30Speaker 1: with Pam Grier, the legendary Pam Grier. She has an
- 19:32Speaker 1: app uh promoted through Bounce. It's called brown Sugar. She
- 19:36Speaker 1: has a biopick with my boy Binny rich Berg that's
- 19:39Speaker 1: coming out Rotten Tomatoes from Jay Farrell. Jay Farrell was
- 19:44Speaker 1: in it. Uh Rotten Tomatoes has ranked her as the
- 19:47Speaker 1: second greatest female action hero and hero in film history.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Who above you? Who they saying? Above you? Are you?
- 19:57Speaker 1: You're the greatest as far as I'm concerned. You were
- 19:59Speaker 1: doing a lot of special effects. You know, you were
- 20:02Speaker 1: really fighting, you were really fighting. The greatest or maybe
- 20:05Speaker 1: the first or second is because I had to do
- 20:07Speaker 1: all those stunts. You saw a sport bra I know,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I know, Bam. I want to thank you for I
- 20:16Speaker 1: didn't have a stunt woman and also because of me
- 20:20Speaker 1: entering and creating this job, I needed a stunt person,
- 20:24Speaker 1: which helped to create the stunt woman's association because let
- 20:28Speaker 1: me tell you when yes, I was a martial artist.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Yes I was a gymnast. Yes I rode horses and
- 20:33Speaker 1: gymp horses and a re scuba diver, and I had
- 20:36Speaker 1: I had a athletic ability. But you really need this
- 20:40Speaker 1: stunt because if you get hurt the first time, let
- 20:43Speaker 1: me the day's over and you will feel it fifty
- 20:46Speaker 1: years later, said Rashan. That's how long my career is,
- 20:49Speaker 1: fifty two years. I watch it. You'll start feeling it
- 20:55Speaker 1: when it gets cold and it rains, I go, oh,
- 20:56Speaker 1: that was that stunt where I drove the car through
- 20:58Speaker 1: the building. My knees are killing me. Graham, I want
- 21:01Speaker 1: to thank you for making conversations and tamp Peter Vergeberg.
