Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to the Apocalypse Will Be Podcasted,
- 0:02a podcast where we overanalyze every chapter
- 0:05of Dungeon Crawler Carl like it's a college thesis
- 0:07written during a nervous breakdown. We talk theories,
- 0:10character arcs, dungeon nonsense, and all the
- 0:12moments that made us laugh, panic, or just sit
- 0:14there staring at the wall for a while. We are
- 0:17a big feelings podcast, so expect plenty of emotional
- 0:20damage, character breakdowns, and way too much
- 0:23discussion about things that probably were not
- 0:25meant to be analyzed this hard. Sorry, Matt.
- 0:28This is a full spoilers podcast covering all
- 0:31released books, including the Pineapple Cabaret.
- 0:33So if you're not caught up, now's your chance
- 0:35to turn back. You've been warned. Okay, so this
- 0:38is a first for us, and this is an episode 2 .0.
- 0:42And the reason that we're doing that is when
- 0:46we released our spoilers episode for A Parade
- 0:50of Horribles, it was before the book had actually
- 0:53been released, and we did not have the audiobook
- 0:55version yet. re -read it since finishing it uh
- 1:00when the last chapter dropped on patreon in february
- 1:04well our memory was a bit fuzzy well if i go
- 1:07into just things that i've forgotten we're going
- 1:09to do another 45 minute episode and i am not
- 1:12trying to do that today so we are just going
- 1:14to highlight some stuff from the audiobook yes
- 1:16we forgot so much though oh my god oh my god
- 1:18which is why i love these books because you get
- 1:19to read them again and again and be like oh my
- 1:21god i forgot about that oh that's so cool i'm
- 1:23gonna pick that out there were entire sections
- 1:24of this book i forgot like The cocaine for minors
- 1:28with an E and O. I did forget that part. Yep.
- 1:32Yep. Okay. So what did we want to cover in this
- 1:35special episode 2 .0? So we wanted to talk about
- 1:38some things that really were highlighted in the
- 1:42audio book. And I think everyone knows what we're
- 1:45going to talk about. Yeah. And that's chapter
- 1:4757. Yes. And chapter 57 is the karaoke chapter,
- 1:52correct? It is. While it is insane, and I can't
- 1:57believe that Jeff Hayes did that, and it's a
- 1:59total mindfuck to listen to, I'm really glad
- 2:04that I have more than one way to read the book.
- 2:06Yeah, definitely. If I'd had to read that trying
- 2:08to absorb the information that happened in that
- 2:11chapter, I think that my ADHD would have exploded
- 2:15a little bit. Like listening to it? Yeah, but
- 2:18I have a hard time when there's music and people
- 2:21talking. That's really rough for me. Yeah, no,
- 2:23it is. If we're like watching something and then
- 2:25like I have a video that came up on like my newsfeed
- 2:28or something where he's like, turn it off, turn
- 2:30it off. I can't focus. No. And actually unpopular
- 2:33opinion here. I couldn't do sound booth theater
- 2:35at all. It was too much for me. Yeah. So the
- 2:39karaoke chapter is fantastic. I love that Jeff
- 2:43actually sung and it was done very well. And
- 2:47I saw this post on Facebook a couple weeks ago
- 2:50where somebody was like, I think that Matt. wrote
- 2:53this book just to fuck with Jeff while he was
- 2:55doing his voice recording. And I don't think
- 2:58that's true. I don't think Matt wrote this book
- 3:00any differently than any of the other books.
- 3:02I think that Jeff and the people at Sound Booth
- 3:04Theater just decided that they were going to
- 3:06go extra hard with this one. And Jeff, I think,
- 3:09had a fantastic time doing this and really went
- 3:12all out with all of the sound effects and noises
- 3:15and voices that he did. Just a correction, it
- 3:18would be the people of Audible, not Sound Booth
- 3:20Theater. Those are two separate entities. Jeff
- 3:22works for a sound booth theater. Yeah. But sound
- 3:25booth theater episodes are their own thing that
- 3:27will be coming out later. Yes. So this would
- 3:30have been an audible episode. Correct. Yeah.
- 3:32Audible presentation, whatever you want to call
- 3:35it. Yeah. No. One of the things that I thought
- 3:38was really great with the karaoke chapter, though.
- 3:40So he takes the gelded choir boy scroll and it
- 3:43makes his voice go up in pitch. And then after
- 3:46he's finished singing. He says that he's waiting
- 3:49for the scroll to kind of time out before he
- 3:51continues talking. And then he starts talking
- 3:54and his voice is still at that higher pitch.
- 3:58And in the same sentence, the pitch of his voice
- 4:01goes down back to normal Carl voice. And I am
- 4:05pretty sure that Jeff did that in real time where
- 4:10he started the sentence in the squeaky voice
- 4:11and then gradually and very smoothly. made his
- 4:16voice go back down to Carl's normal voice, which
- 4:19is incredibly talented. It really is. Yeah. I
- 4:23also, I didn't listen to the entire book on audiobook,
- 4:27but I did listen to the Princess Chandra chapter,
- 4:30which is my favorite chapter in the book. And
- 4:32also my other favorite chapter, the Prepetente
- 4:34chapter. And they were both extremely enjoyable.
- 4:38I think the donut work in both of them is great.
- 4:40Yeah, it absolutely is. I think all of the characters'
- 4:44voices have just come to take such a personality
- 4:46of their own at this point. And sometimes when
- 4:48I go back and listen to some of the earlier books,
- 4:50I'm like, that's not what Katya sounds like.
- 4:52That's not what Louise sounds like. Or, you know,
- 4:55I mean, especially everyone knows early Carl.
- 4:57But the other Audible exclusive is the secret
- 5:02skit at the very end. And if you somehow haven't
- 5:05found that, there is a secret skit at the end
- 5:07of the Audible book. And you should definitely
- 5:09go and listen to that. So if you are a Kindle
- 5:13or a paper book reader, you need to find someone
- 5:16with Audible and ask them to let you listen to
- 5:19the secret skits. Because it is exclusive content
- 5:22and it is amazing. So basically what happened
- 5:27is after I listened to chapter 57, I went on
- 5:30Reddit and I was like, hey, I just listened to
- 5:33this part. It was pretty great. But, you know,
- 5:35before I try to figure out in which chapter Pony
- 5:38sings in the air tonight, like, can you just
- 5:41tell me if they were able to get the rights for
- 5:42that or not? Or if it's in that chapter before
- 5:45I go digging for it, which. It's in chapter 92.
- 5:49I know that because we just covered that in an
- 5:51episode. But they were like, no, they weren't
- 5:55able to get the rights. Listen to the end of
- 5:58Audible. And I like ran into the room and I was
- 6:02like, Nikki, Nikki, there's secret content. It
- 6:04is so good. And then we like sat there and listened
- 6:08to it together. And we were actually like laughing
- 6:11and crying while we listened to it. Like, yeah,
- 6:13it was so good. I was like, just. full body laughing
- 6:19and like crying. It is the best thing ever. Basically,
- 6:23Carl and Donut go into Repetente's personal space
- 6:27to try and, you know, meet up with him to talk
- 6:29to him about something. And he's in his room
- 6:32and he has his karaoke set, which is set up perfectly
- 6:35in the book for this to happen. And he is trying
- 6:39to sing and basically like the karaoke robot
- 6:42is like, you're out of credits and you can't
- 6:45sing this song. And he's very upset. And it's
- 6:47like, But if you can sing your own version of
- 6:49the song and it gets more views or likes or whatever.
- 6:53Well, the machine malfunctioned and he was going
- 6:56to be in servitude to the company that made the
- 6:58karaoke machine for a very long time. Unless
- 7:02he could create his own version that got a certain
- 7:05amount of views. Well, it had to bring in revenue,
- 7:08I guess. And the song that he wanted to sing
- 7:10was In the Air Tonight. And so he had to sing
- 7:14his own version of it. where instead of saying,
- 7:17what is it, so long? I think it's, oh, Lord.
- 7:19Oh, Lord? Yeah. It says, oh, Carl, every time.
- 7:24And he's singing about him and Carl hugging it
- 7:28out and sharing their feelings. It is really
- 7:31great. And I just want to share this story that's
- 7:33actually from The Simpsons because it is kind
- 7:36of the same thing. So in season four, The writers
- 7:40of The Simpsons wanted to have an episode where
- 7:43Marge was in the play A Streetcar Named Desire.
- 7:46And the early seasons of the episodes were mostly
- 7:50them just consulting their lawyers like on a
- 7:53daily basis. And what their lawyers told them
- 7:55is you cannot use any words or phrases that are
- 8:00from the play A Streetcar Named Desire. However,
- 8:03if you write your own musical version, you. Completely
- 8:08own the rights to that and it's fair use. Wild.
- 8:11And this is basically what happened here. Yes,
- 8:13I love legal loopholes. Fantastic chapter. Also,
- 8:17Secret Skit is actually spoilers free, so you
- 8:20can listen to it at any point. It is spoilers
- 8:22free. However, I would say if you haven't gotten
- 8:25through to around halfway through the book, that
- 8:29it's not going to hit as hard and I think be
- 8:32as funny if you haven't gotten to that point.
- 8:35But yes, technically, you could listen to this
- 8:38immediately after Prepetente gets introduced
- 8:40in the books in Dungeon Anarchist Cookbook, and
- 8:43nothing would be ruined, nothing would be spoiled,
- 8:46but it definitely wouldn't hit the same. Yeah,
- 8:48but I love it. So we just wanted to do a little
- 8:52short episode talking about some Audible stuff
- 8:55because we had not listened to that when we released
- 8:58our first episode. Yep, so this was a bit of
- 9:01a weird episode, but thanks for joining us today.
- 9:03Well, I will say that because some of the chapters
- 9:06in A Parade of Horribles are literally three
- 9:08pages long, we are going to have some instances
- 9:10where we're releasing like three episodes in
- 9:12one day. Possibly, yes. Now get out there and
- 9:15read, read, read. New achievement. You've listened
- 9:18to another episode of The Apocalypse Will Be
- 9:20Podcasted. We release new episodes every Sunday.
