- 1:15Speaker 2: Outside of my man, Kurt Franklin, I know very well
- 1:18Speaker 2: this is my next Chess is one of the honest
- 1:20Speaker 2: rappers in the game. He's a Christian Rapper's name is
- 1:22Speaker 2: La Craig. He's recognized as the first artist to have
- 1:24Speaker 2: an album hit the charts at number one for both
- 1:27Speaker 2: the Billboard two hundred and the Gospel Charts simultaneously, a
- 1:31Speaker 2: multi Grammary Award winning platinum All this New York Times
- 1:34Speaker 2: bestselling author interviewed him on that book, Tremendous The Crazy Workers,
- 1:37Speaker 2: fueled by building bridges, changing narrative, empowering a different franchise,
- 1:42Speaker 2: and restoring the dignity of those who are lost. We
- 1:45Speaker 2: were discussing his gospel career, mental health in the black community,
- 1:49Speaker 2: which we don't talk about enough, his controversial collaboration with
- 1:52Speaker 2: Blessings with my man Ti Dollar sign cause I'm trying
- 1:54Speaker 2: to figure that out because I've heard it so many times,
- 1:56Speaker 2: trying to figure that out. His new single, Your Power Will
- 1:59Speaker 2: Charts Tasha Cobbs, was released in time for May Mental
- 2:02Speaker 2: Health Awareness Month to create dialogue around depression therapy and
- 2:06Speaker 2: talk about the pressure of being an ideal role model.
- 2:10Speaker 2: We have a lot to unpack. Please Welcome to the Money
- 2:12Speaker 2: Making Conversations masterclass. Look, Cret, how you down, my brother?
- 2:16Speaker 4: What's going on? It's all good man, All well, I
- 2:19Speaker 4: can't complain. I'm grateful to be here, appreciate you having me.
- 2:22Speaker 4: All we know.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Just about the fourth or fifth interview, I say a
- 2:24Speaker 2: fourth and every time I always go back to when
- 2:27Speaker 2: I first saw you and in Houston and there was
- 2:30Speaker 2: a Joel Osteen's church. It was a think the Super
- 2:33Speaker 2: Bowl gospel celebration that was taping it and you came
- 2:36Speaker 2: down that and I've never seen you and all I
- 2:39Speaker 2: can remember, and I would probably every time I interview,
- 2:41Speaker 2: I always bringing up because you know, when you see
- 2:43Speaker 2: something and I'm just telling you, look, gret, when you
- 2:45Speaker 2: see something special, you have to keep reminding people because
- 2:48Speaker 2: you get hit all the time and we kind of
- 2:51Speaker 2: get wolled down and we kind of like, I'm not
- 2:53Speaker 2: saying you've lost focus, but you know you tend to
- 2:56Speaker 2: like get to sway from what you your purpose. Your
- 2:59Speaker 2: purpose is the impact people like me. I'm not an
- 3:02Speaker 2: everyday church goer. You know, I'm probably close I go
- 3:05Speaker 2: to church with When my wife she says grace and
- 3:07Speaker 2: I say Amen' that's my regular going to church, you know,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and and when I do other church, I understand the
- 3:16Speaker 2: value of going to church when I'm in that church.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And you affected me, brother, with your talents, with your
- 3:22Speaker 2: gifts and every word. I hung on it and it
- 3:25Speaker 2: still impacts me today when I when I see you
- 3:28Speaker 2: and I hear you talking these interviews, it's always not
- 3:32Speaker 2: just you rapping, but you are about the community and
- 3:34Speaker 2: you're about uplift. Tell everybody about La Craze.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Yeah, well, you know, I can only be authentically me,
- 3:41Speaker 4: and you know I wasn't raised in the church. That's
- 3:46Speaker 4: not my background, you know. So I wanted to create
- 3:50Speaker 4: tools and music and experiences for people like myself. You know,
- 3:54Speaker 4: what was what would raise my eyebrows and help me
- 3:57Speaker 4: realize that, you know, my faith is is bigger than
- 4:00Speaker 4: four walls. My faith is bigger than you know, white
- 4:04Speaker 4: gloves and hats, and so I really wanted to create
- 4:09Speaker 4: something for folks like that, and that's kind of what
- 4:12Speaker 4: has been driving me ever since. So I want to
- 4:14Speaker 4: be in different realms. You know, you see me in
- 4:17Speaker 4: the prisons, the detention centers. You see me on the
- 4:19Speaker 4: court side, you know, talking to my NBA players or
- 4:23Speaker 4: my NFL players, You'll see me, you know, mixing it up,
- 4:26Speaker 4: you know, at different environments. But again I'm gonna be
- 4:30Speaker 4: in the church as well because I'm trying to be
- 4:32Speaker 4: well rounded.
- 4:33Speaker 2: We know, it's really interesting. I always tell people that,
- 4:36Speaker 2: you know, when you meet somebody special, sometimes you don't
- 4:39Speaker 2: even know how to talk to. The very first time
- 4:41Speaker 2: I interview Lacraye was probably the most difficult interview because
- 4:45Speaker 2: I didn't really know how comfortable I could be with
- 4:48Speaker 2: him because he was you know, he's like, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 2: I'm a I'm a fan of hip hop, I'm a
- 4:52Speaker 2: fan of godspe was the first time I interviewed a
- 4:55Speaker 2: Christian rapper, a rapper of hip hop. So my whole
- 4:59Speaker 2: conversation like, okay, because you know, because rap has that
- 5:02Speaker 2: that the history of you know, a tough uh violence,
- 5:07Speaker 2: uh uh, getting that bank, getting that bag, you know,
- 5:11Speaker 2: women in video, that's what that That's what when you
- 5:13Speaker 2: say the word rapper, you said the word hip hop,
- 5:14Speaker 2: that's what it entails. Do you fight that? Is that?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Is that something that you did that when people when
- 5:20Speaker 2: you say you're a Christian rapper, that you have to
- 5:22Speaker 2: that you have to deal with as far as being stereotyped.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, you dealt with it a lot early on,
- 5:28Speaker 4: but then you realize, you know what, let me just
- 5:30Speaker 4: change the narrative. If people think, you know, all black
- 5:35Speaker 4: people are criminals, I'm not gonna walk around saying well,
- 5:37Speaker 4: I'm not black. You know, I'm gonna change your perspective.
- 5:42Speaker 4: You know, I'm gonna change your perspective of what a
- 5:43Speaker 4: black person is. And so when you come across me, uh,
- 5:47Speaker 4: you know, you're gonna say, well, what I thought that
- 5:50Speaker 4: they were all, Well, yeah, you thought wrong, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 4: and so, uh, you may have some perceptions about what
- 5:56Speaker 4: it is, what what a rapper who's a Christian looks
- 5:58Speaker 4: like or a Christian rapper, and how they move and
- 6:00Speaker 4: how they get down. Uh, but allow me to reintroduce myself.
- 6:05Speaker 2: And so so with that, you know, I had Tasha
- 6:08Speaker 2: Page Lockhart early on the earlier part of the show,
- 6:10Speaker 2: and you know, it's got like my church day to
- 6:12Speaker 2: day and my gospel day to day because y'all have
- 6:14Speaker 2: different styles, you know, which is really awesome. And you
- 6:17Speaker 2: know she grew up in the church. You know, her
- 6:19Speaker 2: mom was a church you know, so it was no
- 6:22Speaker 2: options for you for her to go in that direction.
- 6:25Speaker 2: How did you get in this direction? First of all,
- 6:27Speaker 2: I can understand the hip hop game, but how did
- 6:30Speaker 2: the Christian part of it get get played into the
- 6:33Speaker 2: hip hop game with you? Lakray?
- 6:36Speaker 4: Yeah, well, you know, I was always a free thinking individual.
- 6:41Speaker 4: You know. My mother was was raised in the church,
- 6:43Speaker 4: and she was a face some abuse, you know, some churches.
- 6:46Speaker 4: So she didn't want me to experience that. So she
- 6:48Speaker 4: raised me to think freely to philosophy, you know, philosophy,
- 6:51Speaker 4: and I started just exploring different views and and and
- 6:54Speaker 4: I knew that I had purpose, you know. And so
- 6:57Speaker 4: if you know you got purpose, that means, you know,
- 7:00Speaker 4: purposes that must come from somewhere. You can't just be
- 7:02Speaker 4: a cosmic accident, just a product of a big bang,
- 7:04Speaker 4: and you think you got purpose. So purpose had to
- 7:06Speaker 4: be given to me from somewhere. So I started just
- 7:08Speaker 4: investigating where that was and what that looked like. And
- 7:11Speaker 4: so I was on a college campus and decided to, uh,
- 7:15Speaker 4: you know, it was a young lady. It's always a
- 7:18Speaker 4: young lady. Uh, you know, hey, but she uh, she
- 7:24Speaker 4: invited me to a Bible study. I said, you know,
- 7:26Speaker 4: I let me go in and check it out. And
- 7:29Speaker 4: and you know, they blew my mind because they did.
- 7:31Speaker 4: They looked like me, they dressed like me, they talked
- 7:34Speaker 4: like me, and I did not expect that. And so
- 7:36Speaker 4: I hung around a little longer, and before long, you know,
- 7:39Speaker 4: I met God in that group of people. And and
- 7:44Speaker 4: then it would turned into like, well man, you know
- 7:46Speaker 4: I can express myself through rap music amongst these folks
- 7:49Speaker 4: because they were people just like me, and they loved it.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Yeah, now now that that's that's God. You know, went
- 7:56Speaker 2: to the meeting. That's what I loved talking to you,
- 7:58Speaker 2: did you? And Kirk? I love talking because you just
- 8:00Speaker 2: really kind of like talk at least say, you know,
- 8:01Speaker 2: it's a like woman, that was a girl. You know,
- 8:04Speaker 2: because so many people in the in the church game
- 8:07Speaker 2: don't want to tell the truth. They don't want to
- 8:08Speaker 2: tell you that journey all the time. And the journey
- 8:11Speaker 2: is everyday life journey. Like you know, like Steve Harvey
- 8:14Speaker 2: used to always say, you know, uh, act like church
- 8:16Speaker 2: people don't have sex. They got some church kids from somewhere. Okay,
- 8:22Speaker 2: they came from somewhere. And now so let's go and
- 8:23Speaker 2: be honest. Now when we're talking about you and this
- 8:26Speaker 2: whole part of the process. Now you you're around these
- 8:30Speaker 2: group of people. Now you wrapping on them, you're breaking
- 8:33Speaker 2: lyrics off. Now when did the when did somebody come
- 8:35Speaker 2: and you go, brother, you got something here, you gotta
- 8:37Speaker 2: got you you can step this up to the next
- 8:39Speaker 2: level here, you know, because we all know that that
- 8:43Speaker 2: this this industry is tied to money. Look great, and
- 8:46Speaker 2: we know that the direction you were going ain't the
- 8:49Speaker 2: big money maker in the hip hop game. You know,
- 8:51Speaker 2: they you know, they're not saying that you broke. But
- 8:54Speaker 2: you know what a hip hop game. It's the number
- 8:56Speaker 2: one streaming format in the world is hip hop music.
- 9:00Speaker 2: And I've talked to enough gospel artists to know what
- 9:04Speaker 2: is a what is a big seller in the gospel game.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Did that come into play? Did people tell you, man,
- 9:10Speaker 2: you need to take your skills over to the hip
- 9:12Speaker 2: hop side instead of the Christian side? What was what
- 9:15Speaker 2: was your people telling you and why did you stand
- 9:17Speaker 2: strong in the Christian rap side?
- 9:20Speaker 4: Yeah? So I had some individuals, you know, I obviously
- 9:24Speaker 4: had the producers and the DJs who said, hey, I
- 9:29Speaker 4: like what you're doing and I think, you know, you
- 9:33Speaker 4: might want to try this on the mainstream side. You know,
- 9:36Speaker 4: that may be a better look for you, right. But
- 9:39Speaker 4: but there was a young man, you know, he was
- 9:41Speaker 4: older than me at the time, and he was into
- 9:45Speaker 4: uh ironically, he was in the money management. He was
- 9:48Speaker 4: a financial advisor, and I really respected him because I
- 9:52Speaker 4: had never met, you know, a young black financial advisor before.
- 9:56Speaker 4: It was it was new to me, and I really
- 9:58Speaker 4: respected him. And he he told me, he said, hey, man,
- 10:02Speaker 4: you really have a talent, and you know, I think
- 10:06Speaker 4: God can use you if you really, you know, put
- 10:09Speaker 4: some structure around this and begin to build on it.
- 10:13Speaker 4: And so, man, that lit a fire on me because
- 10:17Speaker 4: he was somebody I respected. You know, he had the
- 10:18Speaker 4: stuff together. Because I was nervous, you know, I was like, man,
- 10:20Speaker 4: I should I pursue this rap thing? I don't know,
- 10:24Speaker 4: but he gave me the encouragement to do it. Well.
- 10:26Speaker 2: You know, it's really interesting because the whole thing that
- 10:29Speaker 2: people need to understand is that, you know, I always
- 10:31Speaker 2: telling people that's a forking roll and anything. You know,
- 10:33Speaker 2: there are a lot of people in jail because they
- 10:35Speaker 2: took the wrong fork in the roll. We all make
- 10:37Speaker 2: these decisions and whether you can walk that decision back,
- 10:41Speaker 2: I don't know. But when you make the decision. I
- 10:43Speaker 2: always say, give one hundred percent, and that's what you did.
- 10:45Speaker 2: You gave one hundred percent when you start breaking through
- 10:48Speaker 2: those walls and started realizing that you can have a
- 10:51Speaker 2: career out of this, because that's the next step in it.
- 10:53Speaker 2: And I remember when I started doing stand up comedy.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I was just doing stand up comedy for fun. Look great,
- 10:57Speaker 2: and then I realized, you know, some people paying me
- 10:59Speaker 2: a check do this. And I realize, you know something,
- 11:02Speaker 2: I on TV doing this, and I realized, you know
- 11:04Speaker 2: something showing up to see me tell jokes. I can
- 11:07Speaker 2: make a crowd of this. But before that, it was
- 11:10Speaker 2: a lot of it was a lot of dollars. Look great, boy,
- 11:12Speaker 2: you're gonna leave. I'll be able to do what You
- 11:14Speaker 2: better lead that good job. You better lead that good job.
- 11:17Speaker 2: You ain't that funny, You ain't that funny? You know
- 11:20Speaker 2: those daughters, man, And that's that's when I started wondering
- 11:23Speaker 2: in the whole process. That's when faith come in it.
- 11:26Speaker 2: You know your belief, you know that you have to
- 11:29Speaker 2: that you have to lock in and otherwise what are
- 11:33Speaker 2: you what are you fighting? Because it's so many people
- 11:34Speaker 2: can like jump into your lane and say like you said,
- 11:38Speaker 2: DJ talking about hey man, money over here, bag over here,
- 11:42Speaker 2: over here, Yeah, but money over here. You know, those
- 11:45Speaker 2: type of people are really dangerous because in the end,
- 11:50Speaker 2: we all know we're gonna fall. Will they be there
- 11:53Speaker 2: to help you stand up? That's what you have to realize,
- 11:56Speaker 2: am I right? That's right.
- 11:59Speaker 4: You you nailed it. That's a big piece of it.
- 12:02Speaker 4: And you know, even my mother was a little nervous,
- 12:04Speaker 4: you know. And and because of the fact that I
- 12:08Speaker 4: had a nine to five and I, you know, was
- 12:11Speaker 4: getting a severance check. But like you said, I started
- 12:14Speaker 4: doing show after show and I knew, you know, I
- 12:17Speaker 4: had a budget and I knew, okay, let me see
- 12:19Speaker 4: how much is rent? Okay, this show pay for rent?
- 12:22Speaker 4: This can take care okay, all right? And now you
- 12:25Speaker 4: know I planned it out a little bit and then
- 12:27Speaker 4: I made it. I made that leap of faith, like you.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Said, and it's a powerful leap, ladies, Jill, you know,
- 12:32Speaker 2: I love bringing on individuals who, you know, because of
- 12:36Speaker 2: the fact that when I when I talked to little
- 12:39Speaker 2: Crape because he's younger than me, I always I loved
- 12:42Speaker 2: because he's gonna walk in my shoes, He's gonna he
- 12:45Speaker 2: gonna make some mistakes I made, and he's gonna live
- 12:47Speaker 2: through those mistakes and he's gonna learn that he's a
- 12:50Speaker 2: better man for it. Always it ought to be successful,
- 12:53Speaker 2: you gotta make a mistake, because that way, you won't
- 12:55Speaker 2: make that mistake. Right now, you make it two or
- 12:57Speaker 2: three times, you're not a successful person anymore. But as
- 12:59Speaker 2: you go that path and that process, the arrows and
- 13:03Speaker 2: the slings that come at you. And because the last
- 13:05Speaker 2: time we talked about we talked about money. The last
- 13:07Speaker 2: time I interviewed him, he was doing a web series
- 13:09Speaker 2: called Protect the Bag m So that means that he
- 13:14Speaker 2: understands money. With all people were telling him, no man,
- 13:18Speaker 2: you're taking the risk. No man, don't leave that job,
- 13:20Speaker 2: No man, go hip hop. Years later you've been you're
- 13:24Speaker 2: getting paid to talk about money and financial literacy.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Wow, right, that's right, that's right, you nailed it. And again,
- 13:34Speaker 4: you know, that's why you got to stay on the
- 13:37Speaker 4: pathway that you believe he's supposed to be on, because,
- 13:40Speaker 4: like you said, those people who are doubting you, they're
- 13:43Speaker 4: not gonna pay your bills and they're not gonna be
- 13:45Speaker 4: there for you. You know, Uh, to celebrate the wins
- 13:50Speaker 4: with you. So you know, it's kind of like, hey man,
- 13:52Speaker 4: you at the end of the day, you got to
- 13:53Speaker 4: make a choice. And that's what I tell a lot
- 13:55Speaker 4: of my my youngins. I tell him, I say, hey,
- 13:58Speaker 4: you know nothing, and at some point in time, you're
- 14:02Speaker 4: gonna have to take a risk, you know, make it
- 14:04Speaker 4: a calculated risk and make it worth while. But don't
- 14:06Speaker 4: put too much pressure on yourself, especially if you're in
- 14:08Speaker 4: your early mid twenties. You know, if you can make
- 14:10Speaker 4: a couple of mistakes at twenty two, if you make
- 14:13Speaker 4: mistakes for three years or twenty two years old, you're
- 14:15Speaker 4: still gonna be in your twenties by the time. You know,
- 14:18Speaker 4: you realize what's going on. So you know, keep trying.
- 14:23Speaker 2: You know, that's so powerful. That's so powerful. When we
- 14:26Speaker 2: come back, I got to talk to him. There's a
- 14:28Speaker 2: press release that hit the wire that may be called
- 14:30Speaker 2: his PR person and involve the song Your Power and
- 14:34Speaker 2: involve Tasha Cobb. When we come back and go talk
- 14:36Speaker 2: about that. And it was the funny story. I called
- 14:39Speaker 2: Jackie Old that's his PR person. I said, I got
- 14:43Speaker 2: to interview my boy La Crage. She said, he don't
- 14:44Speaker 2: do nothing at the five thirty. I said, wow, I said,
- 14:49Speaker 2: asking She called me back to the Crill do your show.
- 14:53Speaker 2: This is my boy right here. This is my boy.
- 14:55Speaker 2: That's why he's on the show. If you're right back
- 14:57Speaker 2: for more from my man La Craig.

- 15:21Speaker 2: and philanthropist Nick Cannon. Although the former child star has
- 15:25Speaker 2: experienced a long career of success with no signs of
- 15:28Speaker 2: slowing down, he explains why he's so passionate about creating
- 15:31Speaker 2: opportunities for others.
- 15:33Speaker 5: It's all about the community. For me, It's about giving
- 15:36Speaker 5: other people opportunities. It's about opening doors and sharing their knowledge,
- 15:39Speaker 5: wealth and wisdom that I've obtained with everyone else. I mean,
- 15:42Speaker 5: you know, obviously I'm still in school. Hopefully you know,
- 15:45Speaker 5: I'll be able to you know, Hu Howard University. I
- 15:48Speaker 5: want to go all the way I'm getting my masters,
- 15:50Speaker 5: want to go to my doctorate and eventually be a
- 15:52Speaker 5: professor and teach the things that I've picked up along
- 15:58Speaker 5: the way. But it's all about the community, whether it's teaching,
- 16:01Speaker 5: whether it's entertaining, whether it's investing into us.
- 16:05Speaker 2: If you want to listen to this for interview with
- 16:07Speaker 2: Nick Cannon, it's available on Money Making Conversations dot com.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Now let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashaan McDonald.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Wow, I'm back in this. Rashaan McDonald speaking to a
- 16:19Speaker 2: lot Craig. He's recognized as the first artist to have
- 16:22Speaker 2: an album to hit the charts at number one in
- 16:24Speaker 2: both Billboard two hundred and The Gospel Charice. That's right.
- 16:27Speaker 2: He's a multi multi Grammy Award winning platinum artist, New
- 16:31Speaker 2: York Times bestselling author. But it was a press release
- 16:34Speaker 2: that I saw that came across my wire talking about
- 16:37Speaker 2: the song Your Power, which is fantastic by the way,
- 16:40Speaker 2: I listened to it several times and with Tasha Cobbs
- 16:43Speaker 2: and was talking about the church community, dealing with stereotypes,
- 16:47Speaker 2: dealing with people expecting certain things to be a certain way,
- 16:51Speaker 2: and burning gospel church people act a certain way. Can
- 16:54Speaker 2: you break it down and can in details. It's your show,
- 16:57Speaker 2: it's your forum, but I just want to understand what's
- 17:00Speaker 2: going on in the world and why there was a
- 17:03Speaker 2: need for you and Tasha to get together.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Yeah, well, you know, Kasha and I are very vocal
- 17:09Speaker 4: about mental health. We both had struggles with mental health
- 17:14Speaker 4: that we wanted to be public about because black folks
- 17:16Speaker 4: don't talk about it as much as we need to.
- 17:19Speaker 4: And and then, you know, some of the blowback that
- 17:23Speaker 4: both of us have received from you know, certain church
- 17:28Speaker 4: folk about our collaborations, hers with Nicki Minaj and mine
- 17:31Speaker 4: with Todd Dollar Sign, you know, created some unnecessary tension
- 17:36Speaker 4: and pressure. And you know, you don't realize that that
- 17:40Speaker 4: stuff just keeps piling up and piling up, and no
- 17:44Speaker 4: public figure deserves to be as celebrated or criticized as
- 17:48Speaker 4: we are. And so that stuff can tend to mess
- 17:50Speaker 4: with your psyche. And so we just decided to take
- 17:53Speaker 4: control of that and to take you know, our mental
- 17:56Speaker 4: health back into our own hands.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Interesting now, because I do it. I do a lot
- 18:00Speaker 2: of episodes on mental health and anxiety and stress and depression,
- 18:04Speaker 2: and and on the show, my wife was listening and
- 18:08Speaker 2: I said something I told her, and I said on
- 18:10Speaker 2: the show, I deal with depression, and she and she
- 18:14Speaker 2: and Justice. Last week she said I never know you
- 18:19Speaker 2: dealt with any depression. And this is where this is
- 18:21Speaker 2: the problem with the black community. And you know, and
- 18:26Speaker 2: I've been with my wife since eighty two, okay, and
- 18:31Speaker 2: she's never heard me say depression or anything. And I
- 18:35Speaker 2: and she and she and I explained her. I said, well,
- 18:37Speaker 2: I just deal with it. I just I said, I'm
- 18:39Speaker 2: gonna tell you I've been black all my life. I said,
- 18:42Speaker 2: when I get out the car, I still get nervous
- 18:44Speaker 2: of the police officer. So just say hello to me.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Because I have doubts. I said, there's a natural lane
- 18:50Speaker 2: of stress that I'm going to deal with. And I said,
- 18:53Speaker 2: and when you're in entertainment business, explained it. Depression is
- 18:57Speaker 2: part of that because there's no guarantees. And entertainment business
- 19:01Speaker 2: is the worst because you can be riding high, walk
- 19:04Speaker 2: in the room if somebody can tell you you're not
- 19:06Speaker 2: the one, and boy, that wild not cure. You don't
- 19:09Speaker 2: know where to go to recover from that. And so
- 19:12Speaker 2: I said, it's something about entertainment. I said, when you're
- 19:14Speaker 2: doing a regular job, forty hour week job, that's different.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I said, when you're entertainment, your hides and lows can
- 19:21Speaker 2: be extreme you can be you can walk off the
- 19:23Speaker 2: stage to a standing ovation and go to the next
- 19:26Speaker 2: city and they're not even looking They looking like you
- 19:29Speaker 2: that they've never seen you tell a joke, a singer
- 19:32Speaker 2: or a rap song. And I said, that is what
- 19:36Speaker 2: I dealt with all my life. And so and also
- 19:39Speaker 2: when you're dealing in a in a in a lifestyle
- 19:42Speaker 2: that so many people question your decisions, so many people,
- 19:47Speaker 2: you know, question what you do because you know what
- 19:49Speaker 2: you can say, this look crazy. I can't tell people
- 19:52Speaker 2: what I'm gonna do tomorrow. If somebody asked me, okay, Rishane,
- 19:55Speaker 2: what you're gonna do tomorrow, I know I got a
- 19:57Speaker 2: lot of things I'm gonna do, but I can't tell you.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Like if you he was a bank teller, you could
- 20:01Speaker 2: tell us what you're gonna do. If you drove trucks,
- 20:02Speaker 2: you could tell us what you can do. If you
- 20:04Speaker 2: were a scientist, you can tell us we won't do.
- 20:06Speaker 2: But as an entrepreneur in the entertainment business, there's no
- 20:11Speaker 2: lines of description that you can say, when I wake up,
- 20:14Speaker 2: this is my day, right.
- 20:16Speaker 4: That's right, that's right. No, yeah, I mean it fluctuates
- 20:19Speaker 4: from from day to day, and you know, you can
- 20:22Speaker 4: try to build in some kind of consistency, but at
- 20:25Speaker 4: the end of the day, you know, different things come
- 20:28Speaker 4: up and different things happening, so you got to make
- 20:29Speaker 4: amends and you got to you know, move accordingly, and
- 20:32Speaker 4: so yeah, that can create stress. And again, you know,
- 20:36Speaker 4: we we were talk not to talk about those types
- 20:38Speaker 4: of things. I mean, once upon a time we weren't
- 20:40Speaker 4: even allowed to talk about the right things. They tapped
- 20:43Speaker 4: in Martin Luther King's phone so he couldn't tell better
- 20:46Speaker 4: let anybody know what he was going through. And so
- 20:48Speaker 4: you know, that stuff just goes on and on down
- 20:50Speaker 4: the line, where today we know it's kind of like
- 20:54Speaker 4: we got so many things to deal with. We don't
- 20:56Speaker 4: talk about what's going on mentally and emotionally, and you know,
- 21:00Speaker 4: it hinders us from being healthy. So so music has
- 21:03Speaker 4: been a part of our healing regiment. And that's why
- 21:05Speaker 4: I'm grateful to be able to be a musician, because
- 21:08Speaker 4: I can create some medicine for some folks. I mean,
- 21:10Speaker 4: you still might need to go to.
- 21:11Speaker 2: The doctor right right, because because that's really the problem
- 21:16Speaker 2: in our community. Because we I always tell people this
- 21:20Speaker 2: in the first of all, I don't jump hard on
- 21:22Speaker 2: people who who are slow in understanding that you need
- 21:25Speaker 2: to go to a doctor because of the fact that
- 21:27Speaker 2: we know we're the first hired, last fire, you know,
- 21:29Speaker 2: first first, last hired, first fire. Okay, so we always
- 21:32Speaker 2: I remember when I look crazy when I had cancer.
- 21:35Speaker 2: You know, I didn't even know if I could reveal
- 21:38Speaker 2: that because it might cost me my career, might cost
- 21:41Speaker 2: me a job. People might look at my age and
- 21:43Speaker 2: cancer and think I'm not hiring that dude anymore. So,
- 21:46Speaker 2: so as a person of color, there's so many things
- 21:49Speaker 2: that we have to consider before we tell somebody I
- 21:53Speaker 2: need help. It's so many things we can before we
- 21:56Speaker 2: tell somebody that, and it might become across as a
- 21:58Speaker 2: sign of weakness. Of people who you consider your friends
- 22:01Speaker 2: might shy away from you because they don't know how
- 22:03Speaker 2: to deal with you. And they might use the word,
- 22:06Speaker 2: you know, the street word. He crazy, He crazy, I
- 22:08Speaker 2: don't know, he acting strange. And so those are the
- 22:12Speaker 2: things that before I jump down there and go hey man,
- 22:14Speaker 2: black people, they're the worst black people. They got mental problem.
- 22:18Speaker 2: They don't want to talk about it. People need to
- 22:19Speaker 2: step back. As a black man, I'm just talking for
- 22:22Speaker 2: myself now, this a black woman. Brother, I've been dealing
- 22:26Speaker 2: with a lot. I know I've had jobs I should
- 22:29Speaker 2: have gotten. I know they are better comedy writers out
- 22:32Speaker 2: there that I were better there, and I should they
- 22:34Speaker 2: got a development deal, but they got it. I know
- 22:37Speaker 2: they were comedy shows. I should have been the headline
- 22:39Speaker 2: and I was the middle act. I know they are
- 22:41Speaker 2: checks that should have been bigger for me, but I
- 22:43Speaker 2: didn't get it. All those things I have to just
- 22:46Speaker 2: as they say, suck it up and move on. That
- 22:49Speaker 2: is entertainment and that can lead you to depression.
- 22:53Speaker 4: That's right. And you nailed the hammer on the head
- 22:57Speaker 4: and we got to do a better job at navigating
- 22:59Speaker 4: things and and uh and and helping other people find freedom.
- 23:03Speaker 4: And so that's you know, exactly what I aim to do.
- 23:06Speaker 4: That's what I make it my mission to do is
- 23:08Speaker 4: to help people find freedom. Whether that's music, whether that
- 23:10Speaker 4: is you know, conversation, whatever it is, that's what I
- 23:14Speaker 4: want to do.
- 23:15Speaker 2: What you know the thing about is that when we
- 23:17Speaker 2: talk to create, I'm not trying to depress anybody. I
- 23:21Speaker 2: have energy in my voice, and when I'm talking to
- 23:23Speaker 2: you have energy because we've we've had so many conversations
- 23:26Speaker 2: when I when I had you on the show about
- 23:28Speaker 2: your book. You can't get any more honest than that book?
- 23:31Speaker 2: Was that which became a New York Times bestseller? Well,
- 23:34Speaker 2: we talked that was a different conversation. We talked about,
- 23:37Speaker 2: you know, protect the bag. That was a different conversation.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Now we're talking about mental health. How can we get
- 23:42Speaker 2: our black community to start raising their hand? How can
- 23:45Speaker 2: we help them out?
- 23:46Speaker 4: La Craig, Well, we you know, we got to follow
- 23:51Speaker 4: follow some of our leaders, Taraji p Henson, the Rock
- 23:54Speaker 4: Uh uh, you know, Michelle Williams, you know myself.
- 23:59Speaker 5: Uh.
- 24:00Speaker 4: You know, these are weird individuals who are being vocal
- 24:03Speaker 4: about this because we're letting you know that you're not alone.
- 24:07Speaker 4: And so what do you have to be ashamed? But
- 24:10Speaker 4: what can you lose? You know, by being honest with
- 24:13Speaker 4: yourself about getting from healing. You know, I'm not telling
- 24:18Speaker 4: you to tell the world. I'm telling you to tell
- 24:19Speaker 4: your doctor. You know what I mean. And so, you know,
- 24:22Speaker 4: what do you have to lose? You have everything to gain.
- 24:24Speaker 4: And I can tell you on this side of Grammys
- 24:28Speaker 4: and billboards and all these awards in Adelaide that I'm
- 24:32Speaker 4: better for it. No, you got nothing to lose and
- 24:35Speaker 4: everything the game.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Now that the single power? How did that come about?
- 24:40Speaker 2: Did you deal with Tasha Cobb?
- 24:42Speaker 4: So? So, Tasha heard some of my music and historically
- 24:46Speaker 4: and we talked about doing something together, and I thought, man,
- 24:49Speaker 4: that's gonna be an interesting mashup, you know what, you
- 24:52Speaker 4: being traditional gospel and me being rapped. But we found
- 24:55Speaker 4: the right music in the right you know, kind of
- 24:57Speaker 4: combination and it became something special.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Wow. Now now I'm trying to get some some clarity
- 25:05Speaker 2: on this, this this controversy with Blessings that you deal
- 25:10Speaker 2: with Todd Dollars side. That was twenty seventeen, right, yeah, man,
- 25:14Speaker 2: twenty sevent I'll tell you something. I'm telling because I
- 25:17Speaker 2: do this song back then because I loved it. Now
- 25:19Speaker 2: I went did he do a remix? Did he what?
- 25:22Speaker 2: Because I went before the before the All day to day,
- 25:25Speaker 2: I've been going through Google. I've been going through all
- 25:28Speaker 2: the search engines trying to find why are they hanging
- 25:31Speaker 2: on this song? Why Blessings?
- 25:35Speaker 4: You know, I wish I knew, I wish I knew.
- 25:38Speaker 4: You know, they just keep trying to find But that's
- 25:41Speaker 4: how that's how it is. You know, you must be
- 25:43Speaker 4: doing something right if people looking for something wrong with
- 25:45Speaker 4: what you got going on, so you know, just you know,
- 25:47Speaker 4: for me, I just keep pushing.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Well, I'm gonna tell you something. Brother, Listen to me. Man,
- 25:52Speaker 2: you are one of my favorite people of Creamy and
- 25:56Speaker 2: last time we talked, we talked. I was supposed to
- 25:58Speaker 2: come by your building and you supposed to come by
- 26:01Speaker 2: my building. Now this time we gotta make it happen.
- 26:04Speaker 2: And then every time I talk to you, man, we
- 26:07Speaker 2: gotta do something together, man for the community event together.
- 26:11Speaker 2: And I'm just I'm just telling everybody right now because
- 26:14Speaker 2: every time I talk to him, I get closer and
- 26:16Speaker 2: closer to his brother to understand that he's just a
- 26:18Speaker 2: younger version of me. Y'all. He's just a younger version
- 26:21Speaker 2: of me, and Lord have mercy, we gotta do something
- 26:25Speaker 2: about that. I gotta meet the younger version of me.
- 26:27Speaker 2: I'm calling my young twin, and let's make a difference
- 26:30Speaker 2: because your special brother, and I love you for that.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Man, I appreciate you. It's an honor and a pleasure.

- 26:49Speaker 2: I'm very serious. I owe you a visit to your building.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Okay, all right, let's do it.
