- 0:00Alan Carroll: Welcome to the mindful you podcast. And today's
- 0:04guest
- 0:08Don Bennett, Don has spent over 25 years focusing on the mind
- 0:17body conversation, how the energies of the body and the
- 0:22energies of the mind work together. She's written books on
- 0:27the intimacy and the power of touch very much into neuro
- 0:33linguistic programming, and hypnosis, self hypnosis, and
- 0:39supporting people as they develop their skills and
- 0:43abilities to manage this conversation of the mind and the
- 0:47body. When you talk about the mind and the body, you bring in
- 0:51the conversation of mindfulness. So today, we're gonna be talking
- 0:55with Dawn, about the work that she does, and how her work
- 1:00applies to also the area of mindfulness. Welcome, welcome,
- 1:05Don to the mindful you podcast. So I like to find out a little
- 1:09bit about your journey. And what made you decide to do what
- 1:13you're doing now. And what realizations did you have that
- 1:17then motivated you to follow the path that you're following now?
- 1:23Dawn Bennett: So I was going to college as I was supposed to do
- 1:27for international business.
- 1:31Unknown: Right. Scrabble, I like speaking language, right? Yeah,
- 1:35exactly. International. Sure. Right.
- 1:39Dawn Bennett: So um, while I was there, I decided to take a Tai
- 1:42Chi class because I was interested in martial arts. And
- 1:45a guy came up to me and he was like, you know, I'm reading this
- 1:48book called The self esteem prophecy. And it says, if you're
- 1:51drawn to somebody, you have something to teach them and
- 1:54change their life or something like that. I was like, Oh, nice,
- 1:56like a nice pickup line. Great, awesome. But anyway, he changed
- 1:59my life. He brought me down to the nursing program where I
- 2:04learned therapeutic touch and healing touch, and started
- 2:08learning about auras and energy and how we interact as humans.
- 2:12And I was like, What is this world I've never heard about,
- 2:14right. And so I went to I dropped out of college, I went
- 2:18to massage school, and started working as a massage therapist.
- 2:22And as I was doing massage, was looking at this mind body
- 2:26connection. How come when I touch people's hands are like,
- 2:29Oh, my grandmother used to touch me like that. Or I touch their
- 2:32hip and like, oh, yeah, football injury, you know, 20 3040 years
- 2:36ago, and started doing a lot of work around like Peter Levine's
- 2:39work. And that led me into going well, how do I work with the
- 2:44emotions and the body? I got an A cranial sacral therapy, doing
- 2:47some at emotional release work. And I was like, I want more
- 2:51found out about homeopathy. I was like, Well, why not?
- 2:56Alan Carroll: Let me find I'm not quite sure. I'm familiar
- 2:58with hormone apathy.
- 3:00Dawn Bennett: homeopathy. Homeopathy is an energetic
- 3:04medicine. That's been around for many years developed by Samuel
- 3:08Hahnemann. And what it is, is you take a substance, like let's
- 3:13say you take a tree, and you titrate it and diluted down in a
- 3:19certain process that allows just the energy of the substance to
- 3:25be leftover. So if you've ever heard of like the homeopathic
- 3:28remedy, arnica is really popular. Arnica Montana is used
- 3:33for bruising and for injuries. They use it a lot with what's
- 3:39that called? Plastic Surgery, post plastic surgery to reduce
- 3:43swelling and such any kind of injury anyway, so homeopathy is
- 3:46really about, where's the energetic pattern in the body
- 3:49stuck? And how do you shift it using remedies. So there's a lot
- 3:55of thriller looking for. There's a lot of controversy about the
- 4:02science of the background, right, because it works very
- 4:05much on the quantum level. But I wanted something that worked
- 4:11with people that they could do themselves, that they could take
- 4:14ownership of that they could take power of that I wasn't
- 4:16doing to them. And so that's when I ran into Emotional
- 4:20Freedom Techniques tapping. That led me into learning about
- 4:26hypnosis and neuro linguistic programming. And so that's when
- 4:30I started taking all of those trainings and really work I
- 4:33became a relationship and intimacy coach, because my whole
- 4:36life path is about how do I help people connect to themselves and
- 4:40to others in the most true and authentic way possible? And what
- 4:44words do we use that take away from who we are that takeaway
- 4:48from our connection people? How can we use those words more
- 4:50powerfully, more purposefully? How can we ask for what we want
- 4:55and what we need? How do we become aware of what we want we
- 4:57need first, in order to connect with And with our relationships
- 5:01with our friends with our family members with the community
- 5:04around us. And that's what led me to write my books as well. So
- 5:07that's the kind of short version, my path, wow, right
- 5:12into this into this world.
- 5:14Alan Carroll: That's great, that's great, I can see the path
- 5:18of healing, the path of reducing psychological suffering, the
- 5:23path of I'm in the mindfulness business. And so what you're
- 5:27talking about also is mindfulness is to be able to be
- 5:32not seduced by the thoughts that you're thinking, being able to,
- 5:37sort of rise above and see things and be able to observe
- 5:41and and heal the body. And touching certainly is a I find
- 5:49that physical touch is healing. And often people are
- 5:58uncomfortable with physical touch, which I find a Why would
- 6:02you be uncomfortable with physical touch you? But for
- 6:05those people who are uncomfortable with physical
- 6:07touch, what would you tell? What would you? How would you
- 6:10recommend them to sort of get on that path you're talking about?
- 6:15Dawn Bennett: The biggest thing is self awareness. What about it
- 6:19makes one uncomfortable? So is there a belief somewhere or fear
- 6:24that you're going to do something wrong? Or that you're
- 6:27not a man if you want physical touch? Or that if you're a woman
- 6:32and you touch somebody, they're going to perceive it as sexual?
- 6:35Like, is there something around that, that is asking to be
- 6:39healed? Or perhaps your desire not to touch comes from being
- 6:46overly energetically sensitive? We're touching you get maybe you
- 6:50get touched all day long by your kids. And now when you go to
- 6:52touch other people, it's just it's too much like the capacity
- 6:56isn't there? Sometimes our ability to give or receive touch
- 7:01comes from cultural expectations. Sure, trauma, as
- 7:07you know, as you well know. And so we can explore what is it
- 7:13about that? And by the way, it's not wrong to not want touch in a
- 7:18certain way. It's just how do you create boundaries and make
- 7:21it safe for yourself? And sometimes the first place is
- 7:23starting with? How do you accept yourself by touching yourself?
- 7:28Like when you're in the shower? Can you actually soap yourself
- 7:31down and honor your own body? Or does that even feel
- 7:35uncomfortable? And if so, why? Like what have you learned about
- 7:39yourself and your body? That you're not even allowed to soak
- 7:44down your own arm without hurrying up and doing it?
- 7:46Because it's what you have to do to get clean?
- 7:48Alan Carroll: Right, right? Do you have a practice of I'll call
- 7:54it a mindful practice or a meditation practice or a yoga
- 7:58practice that you do to steal the energy and calm the energy
- 8:03during the day.
- 8:05Dawn Bennett: I have a bunch of them that I rotate through
- 8:07depending upon what's happening in my life. So sometimes, my
- 8:14mindfulness practice actually happens for me through movement
- 8:17often. So yoga and breath work is one big one for me. But
- 8:22sometimes for me, it's also I need to go hike in nature as
- 8:26fast and as powerfully and as sweaty as I can. Because I have
- 8:30so much just the only way that's going to release this is to
- 8:35match that energy. So that can actually be one of my most one
- 8:40of my best mindfulness practices, is just to be out and
- 8:44just work hard in nature, just
- 8:48Alan Carroll: nature. I think of Eckhart Tolle, and he talks
- 8:54about stillness. And he says, If you want to become still hang
- 8:59out where stillness is, well, where stillness. Stillness is in
- 9:04the forest, stillness is a nature. And often people I find
- 9:10are, are inside physical buildings and artificiality. And
- 9:16they don't realize taking their feet or taking their shoes off
- 9:19bare feet, grass, get back down to get back down to Mother
- 9:24Nature. As well, I want to touch on you mentioned breathing, and
- 9:30breathing is big deal with mindfulness presence, and I'd
- 9:35like you to share with our audience, maybe even some
- 9:40breathing techniques that if I'm not really aware of what I can
- 9:44do for breathing, what are some basic breathing techniques that
- 9:48I could do that would calm me and make me feel like I'm a
- 9:53better person?
- 9:55Dawn Bennett: Right? And teaching breathwork isn't one of
- 9:59my specialties. He's however, just bringing conscious
- 10:03awareness to the breath brings us within our body. Okay, first
- 10:07thing to do is just notice how you're breathing without judging
- 10:12it without changing it. You know, because the first thing
- 10:16that often happens if I say, okay, you know, tune in your
- 10:20breathing, people go, and they
- 10:22Unknown: sit up straight, and they do all the right things.
- 10:25And
- 10:25Dawn Bennett: okay, now I'm gonna take a deep breath. What's
- 10:28it, what's your natural state of breathing? If you're really
- 10:31stressed, your natural state of breathing might be really
- 10:33shallow. That's information. That's beautiful information.
- 10:38And if you're really relaxed, if you're ready to fall asleep,
- 10:41your breath might be really deep in your belly. That's beautiful
- 10:43information. So the first thing I tell people is just just tune
- 10:48into who you are, how you are right now. And then once that
- 10:53consciousness is there, now, what's your intention? Maybe
- 10:58you're exhausted, and you need to go to work. So maybe you want
- 11:00your breath work to be fast. Maybe you're trying to calm
- 11:05down, or you're desiring to calm down. And so you're slowing your
- 11:09breath, you're allowing it to expand and you're back. Or
- 11:14you're allowing it to expand downwards in your belly. And
- 11:19you're just being with that motion, with the sensation in
- 11:24your body noticing. And being curious, where's it going?
- 11:28Where's it not going? Oh, isn't that interesting? When I
- 11:31breathe, and it feels like it's all going to my right not to my
- 11:33left? Isn't that fascinating? I wonder if I can play with
- 11:37allowing it to go to my lab. And that, bringing some playfulness
- 11:43to instead of here's how it should look. I think it's one of
- 11:46the most important things, when you look at your breath, or when
- 11:50you look at your own practices. Where am I right now? What do I
- 11:56want that to look like instead, in a really gentle, loving, self
- 12:00loving way.
- 12:02Alan Carroll: So what I hear you talking about, Dawn is the self
- 12:06reflection, awareness, observation of what's going on
- 12:13inside your body. And what I find in the work that I do is
- 12:18that, that that would be embodiment. And the opposite to
- 12:24embodiment would be dis embodiment. And dis embodiment
- 12:28is the is the thoughts that you're thinking and trying to
- 12:31figure out a way to erase those thoughts and allow you to go
- 12:35back into your body. And so I find that that is a often people
- 12:44spend their entire life inside their head. They're thinking and
- 12:47thinking and thinking and thinking and thinking they don't
- 12:49even know about the breath. Don't even know that you can
- 12:56breathe and think at the same time. What do you mean you can
- 12:59breathe and think of the same focus on your breathing? And you
- 13:02can't be thinking about dinner. And I find that the the thoughts
- 13:07that you think create a lot of anxiety and tension, tension in
- 13:14the body. When you think of the word mindfulness, what would you
- 13:22how would you define in your your world, Dawn, to be mindful
- 13:28and present in the moment? What does that mean to you?
- 13:32Dawn Bennett: What that means is having a level of self awareness
- 13:36and self reflect reflection of what I'm doing. How I'm acting
- 13:43or being and why. In other words, if I'm in a, let's say,
- 13:50I'm in an intense conversation, and someone says something to me
- 13:56having a moment of anger, okay, I'm angry. That's okay, I get to
- 14:01be angry, that maybe means a boundary got push, or a
- 14:04sensitivity got triggered. That's great awareness. How am I
- 14:11going to choose to react to that? And not that I always
- 14:13react in the best way. Right? We all have our moments where it's
- 14:17like, Oops, i i That was that was that and I just reacted fast
- 14:21and quick, but also understanding like Okay, so when
- 14:24I keep finding myself getting upset, or angry or scared or
- 14:28nervous in these ways, what is actually the way that I want to
- 14:33come to this and what's the dissonance between what I'm
- 14:38doing now and where I want to be? And what's standing in the
- 14:42way of me stepping into that way of being is it a belief I have
- 14:47is the way I believe I should act. You know what's happening
- 14:51in my nervous system, in my breath, in my presence, am I
- 14:55going out of my body and just doing whatever I'm whatever
- 14:59comes out of mine. mouth without any conscious awareness of how
- 15:01it's impacting myself or others? Or am I being really purposeful
- 15:05and taking a breath and saying, Wow, that that made me angry
- 15:10right now and I need a break, or that made me really angry right
- 15:13now. So I'm going to say this as gently as I can, and making
- 15:18conscious choice. So that's what mindfulness means to me is that
- 15:21it's really easy to be mindful on our yoga mats or in our bed
- 15:25at night, it's a lot harder to be mindful. When things when
- 15:29there's chaos around us.
- 15:32Alan Carroll: Isn't that the truth? Not the truth to be to be
- 15:38able to not resist the event that's happening in the moment
- 15:42of now? No, this shouldn't be No, no, no. Yeah, no, it's, it's
- 15:48a, it's being a screen door rather than a winter. storm
- 15:52doors screen allows the energy to flow rather than No, this
- 15:56this should not be, which causes like constipation, I use the
- 16:00word to people who have become constipated, you have to have to
- 16:03loosen things up a little bit, let the energy flow a little
- 16:06bit. And so I imagine in the work that you're doing, the the
- 16:12flowing of the energy through the system? And where are the
- 16:15blocks that occur in the system? And how do you remove the blocks
- 16:19that allow the energy to flow in the system? Is that part of what
- 16:25are some of the? Am I in the ballpark? Because I'm not all
- 16:29those things that you are? What are? What are some of the blocks
- 16:34or barriers or remediation or things you can do to reduce the
- 16:39tension to open up the blocks to allow the energy to flow through
- 16:43your body?
- 16:44Dawn Bennett: Mm hmm. Well, there's a variety of different
- 16:47ways, tools and techniques that one can do. Obviously, I often
- 16:53recommend that people get support, because often we can't
- 16:55see our own blind spots, or we think we know why we're doing
- 16:58something. And as one of my instructors said, if you if you
- 17:01think you know why you're doing something, that's probably not
- 17:04it. Because you're looking at yourself from yourself. Um, so
- 17:11for example, our brain runs strategies, we have a strategy
- 17:14of how we do brush our teeth, how we decide to go to work, how
- 17:17we decide to avoid doing something, how do we decide to
- 17:20communicate to our partner, right, we're only running a
- 17:23certain amount of strategies, which is why there's that adage
- 17:26of the way you do one thing is the way you do everything,
- 17:29right, it's your brain runs certain strategies. So it
- 17:31Alan Carroll: turns out again, that went by too fast for me. So
- 17:33that one, again, your unconscious
- 17:35Dawn Bennett: mind runs certain strategies, okay? To help you
- 17:39get by in the world in a way that it believes is going to
- 17:42keep you safe. And that is going to, you know, keep you in your
- 17:49power, whatever it is it's trying to do at that moment.
- 17:52Right. So if you learn that safety when you're three, if it
- 17:56started learning a strategy, that safety when I'm three means
- 17:59means throwing a temper tantrum or making a fuss so people pay
- 18:03attention to me. If that strategy never gets shifted, all
- 18:07of a sudden, here you are, and you're 50, and you're still
- 18:10throwing an adult version of a temper tantrum.
- 18:14Alan Carroll: Isn't that the truth? Yeah. And how do you
- 18:16escape from that that pattern?
- 18:20Dawn Bennett: Well, mindfulness is definitely one. A lot of
- 18:23unconscious unconscious mind change work, like doing working
- 18:26with an NLP coach is very helpful in that hypnosis is very
- 18:30helpful in that anything that works with the unconscious mind
- 18:33that allows it to shift its idea of how or its strategy of how
- 18:38you're getting what you need. Right? Because you can do it
- 18:41through your own work to through counselors, and psychologists
- 18:44and all that stuff, right? All of those people are very, very
- 18:46helpful to bring the level of awareness, the level of
- 18:50attention to what is it that you're getting by doing this?
- 18:55And what do you want to do instead? So any support system
- 18:58that you can get that will help you bring not just the awareness
- 19:02of hey, I do this, and I'm, I'm going to try not to be angry
- 19:04anymore. I'm going to try not to let my temper get ahead of me.
- 19:08But really like what do we need to heal? That's way underneath
- 19:11that Sure. Oh, becomes easy to make that choice. That's what I
- 19:16recommend for people. It's like get the support that you need,
- 19:19Alan Carroll: then how do you dive in? To find out what's
- 19:25underneath that's motivating the the actions on the surface? What
- 19:30vehicles can you dive into it?
- 19:33Dawn Bennett: Are you telling when you ask about vehicles? Are
- 19:35you asking about like, techniques that I would use? Are
- 19:38you asking about techniques that your listeners could use? Are
- 19:41you asking about concepts helped me understand what you're
- 19:43asking? Sure,
- 19:44Alan Carroll: sure. You talked about finding out what's
- 19:48underneath the surface that's motivating the actions on top of
- 19:50the surface. And so if I'm going to take a dive into that, and I
- 19:57think of, for example, the hypnosis PhD you talked about
- 20:01hypnosis is pretty cool. I mean psychology Oh, it's been in
- 20:04psychology business hypnosis is one of those conversations that
- 20:07people have. And I know that NLP has conversations about
- 20:11hypnosis. So let's talk a little bit about what hypnosis means to
- 20:18you, and how it can apply to our listeners in the audience.
- 20:23Dawn Bennett: Great. So hypnosis to me means when I am teaching
- 20:29people, I mean all hypnosis is self hypnosis. Let's just start
- 20:33there. We put ourselves into trance and we are in trance for
- 20:37the majority of the day. Oh,
- 20:39Alan Carroll: that's a good one. I want to I want to slow down on
- 20:42that one. Okay, we put our hypnosis is self hypnosis. And
- 20:48we live in a we live in a trance. We don't know we're in a
- 20:52trance, but we're in we're in a trance. So what do you mean by
- 20:56trance?
- 20:58Dawn Bennett: What I mean is a level where we are doing things
- 21:03automatically. Okay. And without awareness. Oh, yeah. Okay. You
- 21:08know, like, have you ever driven down the road and you meant to
- 21:11go to the store, but you accidentally cow path it to
- 21:14somewhere else? Home? Oh, wait, where this wasn't where I meant
- 21:18to go.
- 21:18Alan Carroll: older I get the more that happens. Right?
- 21:22Dawn Bennett: Right. Or you drive for miles and you're like,
- 21:24Whoa, I don't even remember the last 10 minutes of drive. That's
- 21:28trance going in the refrigerator being like, where is the
- 21:32ketchup, I could swear the ketchup was here it was right
- 21:36here on your face. Like that you're in a trance, you are
- 21:40actually so deep inside of your body. There are different levels
- 21:44of trance. Of course, when we watch television, like all of
- 21:49these things, we're in this trance state. And when we're in
- 21:51a trance state, we're open to and our unconscious mind is
- 21:56still observing information. That it's creating belief
- 22:01systems around that it's acting upon. And so in hypnosis, what I
- 22:06do, or what people can do for themselves in self hypnosis is
- 22:10they can drop themselves into a level of trance and feed
- 22:13themselves the results that they want to see, they redefine who
- 22:18they are. So if my goal, for example, I'm going to use like
- 22:23lose weight, because it's one that people tend to, you know,
- 22:26quickly go to hypnosis for, you know, not only like, do I want
- 22:30to lose weight, but what what will I feel differently in my
- 22:33body? How will this empower me to be a better human? What will
- 22:38I see in my life? That will make me healthier, happier, more
- 22:42joyful? Like that's what the unconscious mind wants to learn?
- 22:46How am I more safe, more vibrant, more healthy, by
- 22:50shifting this pattern? And so as we're, as we're doing hypnosis,
- 22:59that's, that's what I'm helping encouraging people to do is what
- 23:03strategy or what belief are we running that no longer serves us
- 23:07that now we can replace with this new belief of, hey, this
- 23:10choice can be really easy. It can be easy and effective for me
- 23:15to make this change, because we've all made changes before.
- 23:20And so now, as I step into this new change, I can be I am this
- 23:24powerful person, I feel healthy. I see myself playing with my
- 23:30grandkids in the yard, and the smile on their face as they
- 23:33giggle. And I noticed my knee pain is gone, because I've made
- 23:37these different choices in how I've eaten. And Isn't it lovely?
- 23:42And the mind goes, Yeah, that's amazing. That's exactly what I
- 23:45want. And then all of a sudden, losing weight becomes easier,
- 23:49because your mind now is focused on all the beautiful things that
- 23:53you get to have. And it's much easier than just doing
- 23:55affirmations of like, I'm going to lose weight, I'm going to I'm
- 23:58going to do this thing and force myself to do it because every
- 24:01time we're forcing or fighting. So how do we shift so it's not a
- 24:06fight, but it's a both and my mind wants to be there. My body
- 24:10wants to be there. My conscious mind wants to be there. And now
- 24:12we're all working in synergy.
- 24:14Alan Carroll: Sure. Is there some hypnosis techniques that a
- 24:24person can do without a coach like in front of a mirror or
- 24:28something where they could be becoming aware of patterns
- 24:32inside themselves that they weren't aware of?
- 24:36Dawn Bennett: So hypnosis and being aware of patterns are
- 24:38separate in some in some way. So you'd bring yourself into
- 24:42hypnosis to give the suggestions to your unconscious mind to
- 24:46create the pattern that you want. So first is okay, what am
- 24:50I doing that I don't like? Or what am i Believing that I don't
- 24:53like? And then now I bring myself into trance and then I
- 24:56give myself the suggestions of what I want to see. So I teach.
- 25:00I'm a hypnosis trainer. And so I teach people how to bring
- 25:04themselves into self hypnosis to talk to themselves, their higher
- 25:07selves and actually create that life that they want.
- 25:11Alan Carroll: Can you give me an example of something that I
- 25:15could do this afternoon to become more or less pattern?
- 25:21effect or not? You didn't you said it's not. I know Tony
- 25:24Robbins talks about pattern interrupts and patterns a lot.
- 25:28Yep. And so, a simple hypnosis technique.
- 25:36Dawn Bennett: The part of part of hypnosis is learning what is
- 25:38what is it? Like when you're in trance? How do you recognize
- 25:40when you're in trance? And how do you get yourself there
- 25:42quickly? Yeah. So you'll see people go like, and then just
- 25:46like down, right, which I could do to myself right now, but I'm
- 25:49not going to.
- 25:51Alan Carroll: So you can put yourself yourself, you could put
- 25:54yourself in hypnosis right now into a trance state,
- 25:59Dawn Bennett: I actually already started pulling myself into a
- 26:01trance state as as I was talking about hypnosis. So if you felt
- 26:06if you like, when I when I teach Hypnosis Training, what I do is
- 26:10I start dropping myself deeper and deeper into trance. And so
- 26:13as I get into a trance myself, and as I start finding that
- 26:18rhythm of the energy in the trance, right, which is also how
- 26:21we talk to each other, when we're really engaged. So as I
- 26:25start bringing myself into trance, people naturally start
- 26:27dropping into trance with me. And so it's similar to
- 26:31meditation or relaxation. It's not that much different. So when
- 26:38I do deep meditation, it's very, very similar to being in trance.
- 26:42And one thing that you can play with is looking straight up,
- 26:48like towards the like, keeping your head straight, looking
- 26:51straight up towards the ceiling. And then allowing your
- 26:55peripheral vision just to expand and just imagine expanding all
- 26:58the way around your head. And once you have that, just allow
- 27:05your eyes to soften into come back to neutral. And you'll feel
- 27:09how much that relaxes you already. And even that
- 27:15relaxation can be a trance for some people can be a very light
- 27:18trance, through can calm the system, so you can play with
- 27:22that. And then once you're calm. Once you feel like you're in
- 27:26that like really lovely state of meditation or of hypnosis, self
- 27:31hypnosis, then you can start saying, isn't that going to be
- 27:34amazing? When I have this? I can envision myself or look at
- 27:39money, you know, you said in front of the mirror, look at my
- 27:41body in front of me, isn't it beautiful? I can see the
- 27:44strength in me just as I am. And want to be lovely when I make
- 27:48the choices to eat the way I'm choosing to eat. So that can
- 27:51become even more powerful. So I can become even healthier. So I
- 27:55can have more strength, more energy more joy.
- 28:00Alan Carroll: Is that like reprogramming the beliefs that
- 28:06you had at that three year old? And you're replacing those
- 28:10beliefs with a with another set of beliefs that's more in
- 28:14alignment with what you are intending to have?
- 28:17Dawn Bennett: Again? Yep, absolutely. Absolutely. And
- 28:21sometimes you have to address the beliefs more directly
- 28:25depends upon you know, if you watched your mom for her whole
- 28:28life, talk about how fat she was, and how and she was always
- 28:31on a diet and she's always trying to lose weight that's
- 28:33really differently ingrained in who you are as a person, then if
- 28:39you're just like, oh, I gained five pounds. I feel like my
- 28:42pants are a little tight, I kind of I will get that off. You
- 28:44know, it's a whole different energy of how much awareness or
- 28:49work perhaps it may take in order to clear that that system.
- 28:55Alan Carroll: You mentioned the word meditation. Meditation is
- 29:00one of the pillars of mindfulness. Do you have a
- 29:05meditation? A way of meditating each day? A practice that you
- 29:13follow?
- 29:14Dawn Bennett: Yeah, I go through a streak. I go through streaks
- 29:17of meditation. Like sometimes I'm really great. And I'll
- 29:20meditate for a couple of months I'll do one of my instructors, a
- 29:24yoga instructor who's a master. So my master taught me different
- 29:30mudras and so there's times that I sit in, I do mudras for
- 29:33certain things. There are times where I do like third eye
- 29:36meditations and I'm visualizing or manifesting things. There's
- 29:41some times when my meditation is just like, Okay, I need three
- 29:44minutes. Okay, quiet mind. Okay, but that that pass, okay, let
- 29:52that thought pass. Okay, focus on my breath. You know, in my
- 29:55meditation is literally like just to bring me back into my
- 29:58body into some place. of functionality instead of like,
- 30:03whatever it was happening, that pulled me into the chaos.
- 30:08Alan Carroll: That's great. That's great. Meditation is the,
- 30:13in my, in my business, the managing the thoughts that you
- 30:19think. And being able to. I'll use the word, I use the word
- 30:25erase the thoughts, you have the thought you make it disappear,
- 30:28you have the thought you make it disappear. Every time you you
- 30:31make the thought disappear. Whatever gravitational effect
- 30:34that thought was having on your actions is gone. And it's not,
- 30:40it's not. And so that's a, a, it's called the Sonia
- 30:46meditation. And Sonia meditation is, you know, it's like Whack
- 30:51whack a mole, you the thought comes up, whack it, thought
- 30:54comes out. And you whack it with a with a mantra. And so if
- 30:59you've done Transcendental Meditation, I've not, but you've
- 31:04heard of Transcendental Meditation. Yes, TM, it's the
- 31:07instant, it's a 20 minute practice for the mantra. And it
- 31:10makes all the thoughts disappear. And you replace the
- 31:13thoughts with Sonia and Sonia means means nothing. And so you
- 31:17live in this empty space of nothingness. And mindfulness is
- 31:21achieving that empty space of nothingness, which we'll call
- 31:23the space of the being, versus the space of the ego. Ego is the
- 31:27space of all the thoughts, you can make all those thoughts
- 31:30disappear. You, you come back into that space of the being,
- 31:35what what a, what a pleasure being able to meet a, a person
- 31:41on the path, on that path of transfer of Self Realization, in
- 31:47their own reality, like you're doing Don, and taking your
- 31:52knowledge and your skills, and then giving it to other other
- 31:56people, and earning a living doing it, which is something
- 32:00that you enjoy doing. And I earn a living doing it. It's a nice,
- 32:03it's a nice combination. And if I wanted to, if the listeners
- 32:08wanted to read your books, or they wanted to go to your
- 32:12website, how would how would they get connected with you?
- 32:18Dawn Bennett: Yes. So my website is touch remedies.com r e n e
- 32:23dies. I'm actually in the process of rebranding, but that
- 32:27will always work. My books are on Amazon. One's called the
- 32:31touch crisis, navigating the tricky train of bringing healthy
- 32:34touch back into our culture. And the other one's called What
- 32:37happened to my friendships, five steps to navigate the social
- 32:40distancing crisis. So those are both available on Amazon. The
- 32:43second also has audible because you know, people love Audible
- 32:46these days. But everything else, you can schedule appointments
- 32:51with me, you can email me and everything directly from my
- 32:53website. So I would say going to touch remedies.com is going to
- 32:56be the easiest way to find me and find everything that I'm
- 33:00doing right now.
- 33:01Alan Carroll: And you do coaching. I imagine you do
- 33:04coaching via zoom. So we don't we don't need to actually fly to
- 33:08Minnesota.
- 33:09Dawn Bennett: You don't do you doubt. And I love travel. So if
- 33:13you want to do it in person, I'll come to
- 33:14Alan Carroll: you. Well, that's great. That's great.
- 33:18Dawn Bennett: Absolutely.
- 33:20Alan Carroll: Well, I want to thank you for our time. i I'm
- 33:23going to I appreciate your taking the time to talk and
- 33:26share your your journey with our audience. It's it's been it's
- 33:30been fun. And I want and I want to thank you for taking the time
- 33:33to be on the PATA Palooza and allowing us to be interviewing
- 33:37you. And I am going to put all the information that you send to
- 33:44me in my in the notes section. And so that will be sent out to
- 33:49everybody. So they'll be able to contact you via via the notes
- 33:52section.
- 33:53Dawn Bennett: Great. Well, thank you so much. This has been such
- 33:55a learning opportunity and such a pleasure to speak with you.
- 33:59Alan Carroll: Well, thank you
