- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Acts chapter 2, we get to
- 0:45witness an absolutely wild scene, the Holy Spirit being
- 0:49poured out on the day of Pentecost.
- 0:51Basically, Jesus has just ascended back into heaven and
- 0:54his disciples are gathered together.
- 0:56And then, as Jesus promised he would, the Holy Spirit comes
- 0:59upon them. This is described in verses 2
- 1:01through 4 this way. And suddenly there came from
- 1:04heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the
- 1:07whole house where they were sitting.
- 1:09And there appeared to them tongues as a fire distributing
- 1:11themselves, and they rested on each one of them, and they were
- 1:14all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other
- 1:17tongues as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
- 1:20So God himself, the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit,
- 1:23descends on these disciples, and that is demonstrated with
- 1:27tongues as a fire. And the fact that these
- 1:29Galileans are now speaking in such a way that all those people
- 1:32that heard them were hearing them in their own language.
- 1:35So imagine speaking in what seems to be your own native
- 1:38language and Spanish speakers hearing you in Spanish, Mandarin
- 1:41speakers hearing you in Mandarin, Arabic speakers
- 1:44hearing you in Arabic, and so on.
- 1:46That is what's happening here. The language barrier that had
- 1:48divided humanity all the way from the Tower of Babel has now,
- 1:52in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit been overcome.
- 1:56And what is the message that's being proclaimed so clearly to
- 1:58men and women from all over the world?
- 2:00It's the gospel of Jesus. Peter references the book of
- 2:03Joel in verse 21 when he says, and it shall be that everyone
- 2:07who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 2:10This outpouring of the Spirit results in a clear bold
- 2:13proclamation of the good news that Jesus died for the sins of
- 2:16the world and was raised in victory and that whoever would
- 2:19turn to him would be saved. And then we see the glorious
- 2:23results of the Spirit empowered message. 3000 people were saved
- 2:27and baptized that day and began to function as what we know now
- 2:30as the early church. We have already cast our memory
- 2:33back to the Tower of Babel in this account, but I want you to
- 2:36remember one more Old Testament story.
- 2:38In Exodus 32, while Moses is on Mount Sinai receiving the 10
- 2:41commandments, the people of Israel fashioned and began to
- 2:44worship a golden calf. The anger of the Lord and that
- 2:47of Moses burn against them for their idolatry, and Moses calls
- 2:50on the tribe of Levi to kill with the sword from among the
- 2:53children of Israel on that day. Three thousand men are slain
- 2:57that day. The day the law came down from
- 3:00Sinai, 3000 are killed. But now in Acts chapter 2, on
- 3:05the day of Pentecost, the day the Spirit came down from
- 3:07heaven, 3000 are saved. God is doing a new thing.
- 3:12The work of Christ on the cross has changed.
- 3:15Everything the Holy Spirit poured out brings in a new day,
- 3:18one that will see dead men brought to life and the Church
- 3:21of Jesus Christ built.
