- 1:06Welcome back to 6 Tales of Christmas. Today's
- 1:09story is a stitch in time, a yarn you won't
- 1:13soon forget, a tale about an ugly sweater
- 1:17that's as awkward as it is extraordinary. So grab
- 1:21your coziest blanket and just dive into the world of a cool, ugly
- 1:24sweater.
- 1:31Once upon a Christmas season, in a little
- 1:34shop filled with yarn of every possible color, texture, and
- 1:38size, the great designer was hard at work.
- 1:42Spools of mismatched yarn danced between his fingers as he wove
- 1:46together a masterpiece unlike anything ever seen,
- 1:50a sweater. But this wasn't just any
- 1:53ordinary sweater. This was an ugly sweater,
- 1:57bold, bright, and outrageously unique.
- 2:01It had zigzags, sparkly pom poms,
- 2:05soft pastels, neon swirls, and
- 2:09earthy thick wool. The designer held it up to the light
- 2:12smiling at his quirky charm.
- 2:17Oh, This is unlike anything anyone
- 2:21could have imagined, but you are what I had in mind
- 2:25all along.
- 2:29The ugly sweater had a big job ahead. It was gonna clothe the
- 2:33most overlooked, misunderstood, and distraught in the community.
- 2:37Its threads were made from all sorts of yarn, a dazzling
- 2:41variety of threads from the community, delicate pastels from
- 2:45churches, merino wool and silk from businesses,
- 2:50fun pom poms from outreach programs, and predictable
- 2:53gray polyester from social services. Each thread
- 2:57was unique, full of its own stories, struggles,
- 3:01and strengths.
- 3:06Now the ugly sweater found many people in the community who needed its
- 3:10warmth, many in poverty, those who were sick,
- 3:14newcomers, and many marginalized people.
- 3:18But the ugly sweater didn't just stop with them, as if they were
- 3:21Christmas community projects to be fixed. Actually,
- 3:25everyone in the land was living isolated, misunderstood,
- 3:29and disconnected from each other. Hey,
- 3:33one person said, running a hand along a colorful patch.
- 3:37This thread reminds me of me. And
- 3:41look at this one. Another added. It's so different from
- 3:45mine, but they somehow fit together.
- 3:49I simply can't keep up with the fashion these days. Amused another.
- 3:53But I actually think I could pull this one off.
- 4:05The ugly sweater felt its mismatched threads glow with
- 4:08pride. Each strand sparkled a flicker of curiosity,
- 4:13drawing people closer as they wondered how their yarn was part of this
- 4:16wild and wonderful design. Mesmerized by these woven
- 4:20mismatched wonders, young and old, rich and poor,
- 4:24and people of all ethnicities, abilities, political and
- 4:28religious backgrounds would pause, tilt their
- 4:31heads, and lean closer as the ugly sweater warmed
- 4:35those around them. Soon, it wasn't just the youth
- 4:39aging at a care who benefited from its warmth or the mom who was
- 4:42struggling to keep her family together or the gentleman on the street
- 4:46corner begging for food. Before long, the whole
- 4:49community was eagerly awaiting their ugly sweaters
- 4:53too. Pastors felt awkward at first,
- 4:57realizing that they've always worn the same soft pastels.
- 5:00Pastel yarn was what they spun, so pastel yarn was what they
- 5:04knew to wear. Well, what if
- 5:08we don't get along, whispered a pastor, tugging at a stiff
- 5:12collar. Across the denominations, with
- 5:15community leaders who don't believe what I do, what if the
- 5:19community doesn't want us? But as they don their ugly
- 5:23sweaters from the pulpit and in their neighborhoods, the same phenomenon
- 5:26happened. People would pause, tilt their heads,
- 5:30and lean in closer. Now social workers had
- 5:33never worn anything but their predictable gray polyesters
- 5:37and typically wouldn't be caught dead in this ugly sweater fashion,
- 5:41woven by church pastels. Well, it hasn't always
- 5:45gone well in the past. What if churches slammed the door in my face
- 5:49or they have hidden agendas to coerce my vulnerable clients into their church?
- 5:54But as social workers dared to dazzle in new ugly
- 5:58sweaters, people would pause, tilt their heads,
- 6:02and lean in closer. Social workers started to
- 6:06feel supported and warmly cared for. Wow.
- 6:10Said a social worker. Others, do you want to support me? Maybe
- 6:13there is a way to see those on my caseload supported too.
- 6:18At first, business leaders didn't see much point in supporting an
- 6:22ugly sweater. They were used to writing checks, keeping the
- 6:25economy afloat, and leaving the warm fuzzy and gritty work to the
- 6:29helping professionals. But as they started to take their silk
- 6:33ties and luxurious merino wool jackets,
- 6:37these fabrics were masterfully woven into more ugly sweaters.
- 6:41Looking into the mirror at their wild new flamboyant knit
- 6:44fashion, they saw how their skills and savvy strengthened
- 6:48and supported other sectors in meaningful and life giving ways.
- 6:52Jumping onto their Zoom calls and into high stakes negotiations,
- 6:57people would pause, tilt their heads, and lean
- 7:01in closer. No longer feeling like ATM machines
- 7:05or distant philanthropists, these ugly sweater wearing business
- 7:08leaders gush to their clients, colleagues, and government officials
- 7:12about how they cared for their community.
- 7:24Make no mistake, the ugly sweater was awkward and
- 7:27challenging for the great designer to knit together. The sweater could feel
- 7:31the tension in its threads, stretch tight with fear and
- 7:35trepidation. Everyone worried they'd run into their own yarn and
- 7:39get hurt or be mocked or lose their identity. But the
- 7:42great designer masterfully knew how to work with each type of yarn,
- 7:47with their own quirks and insecurities, softening each
- 7:50of them to bring out their unique best.
- 7:54There, there, my beautiful strands. Let your unique
- 7:58beauty, strength, and connection with each other be
- 8:01exactly what the sweater needs. The more
- 8:05communities were brought together in these unprecedented ways, the greater
- 8:08the demand for ugly sweaters across the land. So the
- 8:12great designer called together teams of gritty, quirky, and skilled
- 8:16yarn gatherers who were passionately obsessed about bringing yarn
- 8:20together. These tenacious gatherers loved connecting with
- 8:24churches and social services and cultural groups and
- 8:27businesses and many hurting people to assure them that
- 8:31they were needed and valued, and to invite them to be part of
- 8:35something much bigger together. The great
- 8:38designer gave the yarn gatherers a particular assignment to
- 8:42gather more soft pastel yarn of the church, as this was in high
- 8:46demand to bring warmth and light into each sweater
- 8:49he knit. I want you to remind them of their
- 8:53calling and who they were created to be in community.
- 8:58Some churches were eager and ready, so excited and curious for the
- 9:01adventures they would be zigged and zagged into. They were wanting
- 9:05to collaborate, but needed a way to make meaningful connections.
- 9:10Oh, how they brought such timely joy and warm love into social
- 9:13worker offices, the street corners, and some of the people
- 9:17just hanging on by a thread. These soft
- 9:21pastel church fibers were unstoppable now. The
- 9:24more they gave of themselves into ugly sweaters, the more the
- 9:28pastel yarn seemed to flow. But oddly
- 9:31enough, this wasn't the case for other pretty pastel
- 9:35churches. Tightly wound together in neat
- 9:38calculated balls of yarn, some brushed the yarn gatherers off
- 9:42because they were too busy making their own pastel sweaters.
- 9:46Others stroked their chins judiciously and said they'd pray about
- 9:49it. Still others hardly raised a sleepy glance at the
- 9:53gatherer's invitation, as they were simply too comfortable wrapped
- 9:57up in their cozy fibers. Perhaps they
- 10:00couldn't fathom had the great designer would ever have them venture away from their
- 10:04traditional solid pastel ensemble to be part of such a gaudy,
- 10:08ugly sweater. The yarn gatherers
- 10:12lovingly assured the church their soft pastels would become more
- 10:15beautiful and the fibers of their faith would not only remain
- 10:18steadfast, but actually grow softer and more
- 10:22resilient in the great designer's ugly sweater.
- 10:35No matter how hard it was, the great designer would never stop
- 10:38pursuing all the pastel yarn in the land, inviting them to be
- 10:42woven into a wilder design they were created for.
- 10:46It wasn't just the pastels who had trepidations and fears.
- 10:51Every single type of yarn felt it too, ingrained into the
- 10:54very fibers of their being. But how could they deny
- 10:58the awkward marvel and bizarre beauty of the ugly sweater?
- 11:02How could they dismiss the way these woven wonders were changing the very
- 11:06fabric of their community? There was no way around it.
- 11:10The ugly sweater was warming people up to each other so well, it
- 11:14became the coolest list in the land. So if
- 11:17you see someone sporting an ugly sweater this Christmas,
- 11:21remember the great designer is still at work, making
