- 0:03might be a kid on another planet sitting in their bedroom,
- 0:06staring out of their window, wondering if there's anyone else
- 0:08out there? What if that planet has oceans
- 0:11and clouds and mountains and maybe even its own version of
- 0:14pizza? And what if scientists are right
- 0:17now, as you listen to this, trying to find it?
- 0:20Today on the Curious Kid cast, we are going to find out whether
- 0:24there is another Earth hiding somewhere in the universe.
- 0:27And the answer is going to make your brain feel like it just did
- 0:31a somersault. Stay with me.

- 0:57Welcome to The Curious Kid cast, the show where we take the
- 1:00biggest, brainiest, most bonkers questions in the universe and
- 1:04actually try to answer them properly.
- 1:05I'm Charlie. And today, oh today we are going
- 1:09on a journey so far from Earth that your brain might need a
- 1:11seat belt. Right?
- 1:13Before we dive in, I have to tell you what started today's
- 1:15episode. A kid called Finn from
- 1:18Edinburgh, Scotland was doing his homework one evening, not
- 1:21paying attention to his homework obviously.
- 1:23He was staring out the window at the night sky and he thought to
- 1:26himself, if Earth is this good, surely someone else out there
- 1:29made another one. His mum told him to focus on his
- 1:31maths. Finn did not focus on his maths.
- 1:34Instead he sent us a question. Are there other Earths out there
- 1:36Finn? This one's for you, and your
- 1:38maths homework is probably still waiting for you, buddy.
- 1:41So are there other Earths out there?
- 1:44Well, buckle up, because the answer is kind of mind melting,
- 1:47kind of exciting and only a tiny bit terrifying.
- 1:50Talk about what we even mean when we say another Earth.
- 1:53Because if you just mean a big round thing flowing in space,
- 1:55then yes, absolutely, we've found loads of those done
- 1:58podcast over. But that's not what we mean when
- 2:00scientists talk about another Earth.
- 2:02They're looking for something very specific.
- 2:04A planet that is roughly the same size as ours, at roughly
- 2:07the right distance from its star.
- 2:08So it's not a frozen ice lolly or a giant fireball, and in a
- 2:12place where liquid water could actually exist on the surface.
- 2:16Because here's the thing about water.
- 2:18Life, as far as we know, absolutely loves water.
- 2:21Every single living thing on Earth needs it.
- 2:23So if a planet has liquid water, it's going to our maybe pile.
- 2:28Now, a few decades ago, we had absolutely no idea if there were
- 2:31any planets outside our solar system at all.
- 2:34Zero. None.
- 2:35We just had our eight planets plus poor Pluto who got demoted
- 2:38and still hasn't got over it. And that was basically it.
- 2:41Check back to episode 22, by the way, if you want to hear more
- 2:44about what happened to Pluto. But then scientists got really
- 2:47clever and started looking for planets around other stars.
- 2:50These faraway worlds are called exoplanets.
- 2:53Exo just means outside. So exoplanets are basically
- 2:55outside planets. Very dramatic name for what is
- 2:58essentially just a planet. Scientists love dramatic names.
- 3:01And here's the bit that will genuinely blow your mind.
- 3:04We have now found more than 6000 exoplanets. 6000, that's not a
- 3:09typo. 6000 planets. That's more planets than there
- 3:14are flavours of crisps, which I think we could all agree is a
- 3:17lot. Now most of those planets are
- 3:21absolutely terrible for life. Some are giant balls of gas
- 3:24bigger than Jupiter. Some are so close to their star
- 3:27that a year there lasts only a few days, which would make
- 3:30birthday presents extremely expensive.
- 3:32Some are so hot that it rains molten iron.
- 3:35Iron falling from the sky like rain, but made of metal.
- 3:40So don't forget your umbrella on that holiday.
- 3:43But hidden in among all those bonkers worlds are some smaller,
- 3:47rockier planets that have scientists very, very
- 3:50interested. Some of them are in something
- 3:52called the habitable zone. This is the region around a star
- 3:55where the temperature is just right for liquid water to exist.
- 3:59Scientists also call it the Goldilocks Zone, which I think
- 4:02is the best scientific term ever invented because it means the
- 4:05planet is not too hot, not too cold, but just right, just like
- 4:09Goldilocks in the porridge, except hopefully without a large
- 4:13angry bear turning up at the end.
- 4:16We found some planets that seem to take quite a few of those
- 4:18boxes. There's one called Kepler 452B,
- 4:22which is often called Earth's cousin.
- 4:24It orbits a star very similar to our sun, and it takes almost the
- 4:27same amount of time to go round that star as Earth does to go
- 4:31round ours. And Earth year is 365 days.
- 4:35Kepler 452 B's year is 385 days. That's basically the same,
- 4:41except you'd wait a little longer for Christmas, which I
- 4:43think most kids would agree is actually worse.
- 4:47Kepler 452B is also in its stars habitable zone, which means
- 4:52temperatures there might allow liquid water.
- 4:54But, and this is a big but, it's about 1 1/2 times the size of
- 4:58Earth, which might mean it's more of a gassy mini planet than
- 5:01a rocky surface one. We just don't know yet.
- 5:04It's like being told there's a biscuit in a tin, but you can't
- 5:06open the tin. You just have to stand there and
- 5:09wonder about the biscuit. There's also something called
- 5:12Trappist One, which is a star with seven planets orbiting
- 5:15around it, some of which are Earth sized and in the habitable
- 5:19zone. 7 planets in one system. That's like someone went
- 5:22completely mad at the planet shop.
- 5:23But before we get too excited, Trappist 1 is a small, cool Red
- 5:28Star called a red dwarf, and red dwarfs have a bit of a habit of
- 5:31throwing enormous flares of radiation at their planets.
- 5:34That's basically the star having a tantrum and blasting
- 5:37everything nearby with dangerous energy, which is not great if
- 5:41you're to quietly develop life on the surface.
- 5:45And there's a newer one too, discovered just this year
- 5:47actually, called HD 137,000 and 10 B.
- 5:51It's almost exactly the same size as Earth and takes a
- 5:53similar amount of time to orbit its star.
- 5:55Scientists were very excited. The Internet got very excited.
- 5:59Headlines everywhere said things like, is this another Earth?
- 6:02And then scientists look closer and went, ah, it might be
- 6:05extremely cold, like very, very freezing cold.
- 6:08So possibly not the tropical holiday destination we were
- 6:11hoping looking for. Now here's something important
- 6:14to know. When you see a headline that
- 6:15says scientists discover Earth like planet, don't immediately
- 6:19start packing your bags because earth like is a sneaky phrase.
- 6:22It often just means the planet is similar in one or two ways.
- 6:25Maybe it's the right size. Maybe it's the right distance
- 6:28from its star. But we often know almost nothing
- 6:31else about it. We don't know what it's air is
- 6:32like. We don't know if it has oceans
- 6:34or just rocks. We don't know if it's pink with
- 6:37purple polka dots on the surface.
- 6:38We just don't know. It's a bit like someone saying I
- 6:41found and a house just like yours and it turns out they mean
- 6:44it also has a front door. So how do scientists even find
- 6:48these planets in the 1st place? Because you can't just look
- 6:51through a telescope and see them.
- 6:53They're way too tiny and the stars they orbit are way too
- 6:56bright. It's like trying to spot a
- 6:58single Ant standing next to a bonfire from the other side of
- 7:02town. Scientists use two very clever
- 7:05tricks. The 1st is called the transit
- 7:07method. When a planet passes in front of
- 7:09its star, it blocks a teeny tiny amount of the star's light.
- 7:13We're talking about a dimming so small you'd never notice it with
- 7:16your eyes. But space telescopes can spot
- 7:18it, and if that dimming happens on a regular schedule, it means
- 7:21something is orbiting the star and blocking the light each time
- 7:24it passes. From that tiny flicker,
- 7:26scientists can work out the size of the planet and how long it's
- 7:29year is. It's basically the universe
- 7:31version of a shadow puppet show. The second trick is called the
- 7:36Wobble method, which is my personal favorite just because
- 7:39of the name. Every planet has gravity, and
- 7:42that gravity pulls on its star very slightly, making the star
- 7:46wobble. Scientists can detect that tiny
- 7:49wobble from billions of kilometres away and use it to
- 7:51figure out that a planet is there.
- 7:54The wobble method. Honestly, science is amazing.
- 7:58But here's the problem. These methods work really well
- 8:01for big planets or for planets that are very close to their
- 8:03stars. Planets that are earth sized and
- 8:05earth like distances are much harder to detect because their
- 8:09signals are tinier. So ironically the most earth
- 8:13like planets are the hardest ones to find.
- 8:16It's like trying to find the quietest kid in a room full of
- 8:19people doing kazoo solos. That's why scientists are
- 8:22building new telescopes like 1 called Plato, which is launching
- 8:26later this decade and is specifically designed to hunt
- 8:28for Earth sized planets around sun like stars at Earth like
- 8:32distances. And then there are even bigger
- 8:34plans for future telescopes that would actually take photographs
- 8:38of exoplanet atmospheres and look at what gases are in their
- 8:41air. Because if you can see the air
- 8:43around a planet, you might be able to spot what scientists
- 8:45call biosignatures. Those are gases, or combinations
- 8:48of gases that could hint that something living is making them,
- 8:51like oxygen or methane. On Earth, most of our oxygen
- 8:54comes from plants and tiny ocean creatures.
- 8:57If you detected something similar around a distant planet,
- 8:59that would be a very big deal indeed.
- 9:02Some scientists have already found hints of interesting gases
- 9:05around a couple of exoplanets, but these results are still
- 9:07being debated and checked and double checked.
- 9:09Science is very careful like that.
- 9:11You can't just say we found aliens because you spotted 1.
- 9:14Slightly unusual reading, although to be fair, that would
- 9:17make for an incredible podcast episode.
- 9:20So where does all this leave us? Well, we haven't found a true
- 9:23Earth twin yet. No planet has been confirmed to
- 9:26have Earth like air, Earth like temperatures, liquid water,
- 9:29oceans, and signs of life all at the same time.
- 9:32But here's why most scientists think other Earths almost
- 9:35certainly do exist. Our Galaxy, the Milky Way,
- 9:38contains hundreds of billions of stars.
- 9:40Many of those stars have planets.
- 9:42Some of those planets are rocky. Some of those rocky planets are
- 9:46inhabitable zones, even if only a tiny fraction of them end up
- 9:50being genuinely Earth like, that tiny fraction of hundreds of
- 9:53billions is still an enormous number.
- 9:56The universe is simply too big and too full of planets for
- 9:59Earth to be completely unique. You might even be part of the
- 10:03generation that grows up to see it, The confirmation that
- 10:06somewhere out there orbiting a distant star is a world with
- 10:10clouds and oceans and maybe, just maybe, something looking
- 10:13back up at the sky. Wondering the same thing?

- 10:51Exo means outside, so exoplanets are planets outside our solar
- 10:55system. Extra credit if you chose C
- 10:57though, because honestly, fair enough.
- 10:59Question two. What is the nickname for the
- 11:01region around a star where temperatures might allow liquid
- 11:05water to exist? Is it a the Goldilocks zone, B
- 11:09the warm and cozy corner, or C the habitable hammock?
- 11:19The answer is A the Goldilocks zone.
- 11:22Not too hot, not too cold, just right.
- 11:24No bears required. Question three.
- 11:27Scientists use the transit method to find planets.
- 11:29What does this method involve? Is it A waiting for a planet to
- 11:33send them a postcard, B detecting a tiny dimming of a
- 11:37star's light when a planet passes in front of it?
- 11:39Or C pointing a very large telescope at space and shouting
- 11:43Is anyone there? The answer is B.
- 11:51When a planet crosses in front of its star, it blocks a tiny
- 11:54amount of light, and clever telescopes can detect that
- 11:57flicker, although Option C is also something scientists have
- 12:01tried to be fair. And that is it for today's
