MAFS: were Dan & Jess set up by producers?

On the phone with Chrissie, Sam & Browny, MAFS 'villains' Jess and Dan were quick to defend themselves for 'cheating' on their 'spouses', but they were also quick to point out that as much as the show edits and messes around with them, they're people who have (some) agency. They can do what they want. Sure, they're villains, but isn't this show about finding love?
