- 0:21Pause Harnessing the Life Changing Power of Giving
- 0:25Yourself a Break, based on my burnout of Google and all the
- 0:27things that I've learned since that are really in this realm of
- 0:30neuroscience, psychology, and emotional intelligence.
- 0:34If you're interested to download my free guidebook for how to get
- 0:37overwhelmed, I invite you to do that at
- 0:40rachelomara.com/guidebook. Just so excited?
- 0:43Let's just start and dive in. Hey you, it's Rachel.
- 0:50And I have a very special episode today where I'm going to
- 0:55get into how I burned out of Google and really where it all
- 0:59led to. Which is right where I'm sitting
- 1:01today as an executive coach who helps people get out of burnout
- 1:07themselves or overwhelmed, but also just really rise to their
- 1:10next level of leadership through selfawareness and emotional
- 1:13intelligence and mastery. So I'm sharing today an excerpt
- 1:19from a course that I have called Purposeful Living 8 Weeks to
- 1:23Purposeful Living. And this particular chapter is
- 1:27all about neurotic anxiety, which I really tie into my story
- 1:31and you'll see how that works. So you'll hear me reference Rolo
- 1:34May May. He is someone who I studied at
- 1:39the right graduate university, really one of the influencers in
- 1:42my. World as an existentialist and
- 1:46one of the leading American psychologists in his day.
- 1:49So he was in the 50s kind of right after World War Two and he
- 1:54talked a lot about neurotic anxiety and how normal it is to
- 1:58be with anxiety. And I really think about our
- 2:00current world today. And he's so right on.
- 2:03He is. It's as if he lived in the
- 2:05future and knew everything that we are doing now, whether it's
- 2:08social media and he only had TV and radio back then.
- 2:11So you'll hear me reference May. A few times, not too much.
- 2:14And this is a pretty short episode, but I really think it's
- 2:17a great lens of my story that I don't usually tell.
- 2:21And tying it to purposeful living, tying it to How do we
- 2:24feel more purposeful in our lives?
- 2:26Because ultimately we burn out, because we don't have purpose.
- 2:29We feel like we're just going and striving and making things
- 2:33happen, but we don't really feel like we got skin in the game or
- 2:36we feel like we've lost ourselves because for whatever
- 2:39reason, we don't remember what skin in the game we gave.
- 2:43Or in other ways, something like that.
- 2:45As well as just maybe not being in touch with our feelings and
- 2:48wearing these masks that we put on.
- 2:50And you'll hear me reference that too.
- 2:51So anyway, I'll let you have at it.
- 2:53Enjoy this episode. It's it's a short, sweet one
- 2:56that my story's about 8 minutes long.
- 2:58And let me know what you think, if this was helpful.
- 3:00And if you're interested in this course 8 Weeks to Purposeful
- 3:02Living, just reply and let me know because I'm actually
- 3:05launching this very soon. It's not available yet and my
- 3:08private clients have access to this, but I also am soon to be
- 3:12making this available to the public.
- 3:13We study all these incredible thought leaders who have
- 3:17contributed to our world of how to live more purposefully,
- 3:21whether it's Rolo May and his book Like Man, Search for
- 3:24Meaning. Or Viktor Frankel, who was one
- 3:27of his mentors on his will to meaning.
- 3:30Carl Rogers, Holly Cheeks at Me High and Martin Seligman were.
- 3:34We study all of those folks in this course, but you'll see how
- 3:36their lens applies so that you feel more purposeful.
- 3:40And that's what it's all about, right?
- 3:41Why we live, why we show up every day, do the meaningful
- 3:44things we do because it matters to us.
- 3:47And when we lose sight of that, I think that's really when we
- 3:49truly lose our way, we get burned out and we feel a little
- 3:53hopeless. And that's exactly how I felt
- 3:55when I burned out. So without further ado, here we
- 3:58go. I want to share a little bit
- 4:10about my story because you may know a little bit about it, but
- 4:14I think I really relate to to May in a lot of these tragic
- 4:19aspects of humanity and what I was living.
- 4:22And I literally was in a great example of what he talks about
- 4:26with the mechanics of life. OK, so here's me.
- 4:31Imagine me. I'm 38 years old and I.
- 4:36I am an achiever. I've got a lot of great things
- 4:39happening. I own my own house.
- 4:41I got a business degree from a good school.
- 4:44I earned good money. I lived in New York.
- 4:48I lived in San Francisco. I work for the number one
- 4:51company to work for in the world, Google at the time.
- 4:54And I also was a national champion in the field of my
- 4:58sport, which was rowing. OK and all of that was great.
- 5:04And I'm very proud of everything there.
- 5:06And that's good. However, why did I fill up my
- 5:10schedule all the time? And I think about it because I
- 5:14was neurotically anxious. Historically, I just chose to
- 5:19avoid my anxiety and I kept myself busy instead.
- 5:23So there's a reason why we fall into work and be workaholics or?
- 5:29Trained for Iron Mans or marathons, which I did, three of
- 5:33them or a national championship, right?
- 5:35And these are really good accomplishments.
- 5:37I'm not dismissing that, but I was avoiding myself because I
- 5:41wasn't comfortable in the fear of like, what?
- 5:44If I just existed for me and did nothing, would I be okay with
- 5:47that? And the answer I at the time was
- 5:49no way. Like, I have to.
- 5:51I have to do stuff to matter. And that was my limiting belief.
- 5:55Like I won't matter unless I do things.
- 5:59Even saying that, a lot of like, I feel that viscerally in my
- 6:02bones, like that was just implanted in me at a very young
- 6:05age. I got rewarded for good grades.
- 6:07I did things that felt really good and people saw me and heard
- 6:12me for it. So I got validated.
- 6:14And I think a lot of us, especially us overachievers,
- 6:17feel like we've kind of come from that background, right?
- 6:20So what did I do? I never really like.
- 6:24The irony is I never paused. I literally just kept going one
- 6:27thing to the next. Every weekend I had a new person
- 6:30I was going to go visit on the weekend or a race I was going to
- 6:33attend or some big thing I was training for.
- 6:36I was over focused on sports and things that kept me busy,
- 6:41whether that just meant like visiting college friends or
- 6:44planning a trip to Europe or whatever because it kept me
- 6:47absent from being present. In my daytoday life, just being
- 6:51like in touch with how I felt in the moment, I I was an extreme
- 6:56example of what may shared, right?
- 6:58And I think in my routine, feeling empty despite the
- 7:02accolades and achievements the the external world praised me
- 7:04with was what was going on. So how did that shift right?
- 7:09So you all know the story now where I think I took.
- 7:12I think I've told you all in some way or even if you don't
- 7:14know, I I had to take myself out of the game.
- 7:17I had to take an unpaid break because.
- 7:19I literally was told by my manager that I wasn't doing
- 7:23well. I had no idea, like I didn't
- 7:25know how to fix it. I was super, super perplexed and
- 7:27confused and I think it was really because I wasn't present.
- 7:30I was just always like, OK, let me think of these things and
- 7:34then I I just like would rattle something off without thinking
- 7:36about it because my response was like, well, let me pull up the
- 7:38space really fast because I need to look smart.
- 7:43Is anyone relating to this? Right.
- 7:45So for me, I felt that emptiness.
- 7:48I was so scared to slow down or just even move into something
- 7:52different because I was terrified of what I would find
- 7:55out, which meant maybe maybe I'm in the maybe, maybe I'm nothing.
- 8:00Like maybe I'm in the complete wrong job.
- 8:04Maybe I'm not supposed to be in technology or working here or in
- 8:07this job. Maybe I'm a failure.
- 8:10Like, there were these existential questions.
- 8:12That's what this existential neurotic anxiety is like.
- 8:15Like, who am I as a person if I can't do this job Well?
- 8:18What I didn't know is that I actually was a great, beautiful,
- 8:22amazing human who can live and be okay without a job in a top
- 8:28tier company. But I had to learn that because
- 8:30I had to learn who I was and be okay with who I was and know
- 8:34myself more on this deep contact, which is a term used
- 8:39by. I think May and Carl Rogers uses
- 8:43that, right? So I had to be willing to, like,
- 8:45take off my mask right, that this is the mask.
- 8:47Rogers talks about our our full mask, and just look at who I was
- 8:52without the title, without the Google, without the growing.
- 8:55And it was super scary. It was the first time in my life
- 8:59that I really did that. But look where it got me.
- 9:01Like I wrote a book about it. I learned how to help other
- 9:04people do it, and it's the best thing I ever did.
- 9:08And that's what. May is talking about when you
- 9:11can go on the other side the the, the quote that he shares.
- 9:18Anxiety is a gateway into the meaning of life.
- 9:22That's what I got out of my anxiety, and that's what's there
- 9:26for all of you. And I know that sounds crazy.
- 9:28You're like, Oh my God, you really, Rachel, like you want me
- 9:30to look at this stuff? And the answer is you can you.
- 9:35It's a choice. And that's the existential part,
- 9:37right? We all can.
- 9:38Choose how we want to be. You can go and live your life
- 9:42without ever taking a moment to notice anything.
- 9:44But once you're on this path, you have a little bit of a
- 9:47different course in front of you.
- 9:49The journey is about discovering what and who I am so I can find
- 9:54more meaning and you want to like that's a huge yearning you
- 9:56have. Am I?
- 9:58Am I accurate on that one? That's a little bit about my
- 10:01story. And I just share that because
- 10:03we've all been there and I share that because you're not alone.
- 10:07Take a deep breath into that too.
- 10:09You can tell yourself right now. Give yourself a little pat Touch
- 10:12your heart space. Put a big hand on your heart.
- 10:14Whatever hand is free. Just say I am not alone and let
- 10:18those tears flow. If you feel sad, breathe deeply
- 10:22into that space. This is you really, deeply
- 10:25connecting with yourself. And I'm just so proud of you for
- 10:27going there. You know, maybe you don't have
- 10:29any tears and you're just like, I don't even know what you're
- 10:31talking about. That's okay.
- 10:32We are all different places for this.
- 10:37But anxiety is what makes each of us a fully functioning human
- 10:40being and live purposefully because it's part of our human
- 10:45existence. And if we forget that part, if
- 10:47we want to shun that away and avoid it, we're leaving part of
- 10:50ourselves behind, which is why we don't feel purposeful.
- 10:56I know that's a total catch 22, but bear with me and I think you
- 11:01might be starting to understand this bigger picture.
- 11:04And we can exist with our neurotic anxiety.
- 11:07It doesn't mean it goes away. I can still figure out what am I
- 11:09doing. I still can ask myself many
- 11:11days, every day, what am I doing here?
- 11:14That's okay, That's good. But if we learn to accept
- 11:18ourselves knowing this is part of who I am, then it's a
- 11:22different game altogether. Because now I'm in relationship
- 11:26with myself versus running away from myself.
