- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: I've been... Why?
- 0:01[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know what we're doing?
- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we're not starting to read Matthew.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: No, but we're going to talk about it.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_01]: We are.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking about Matthew.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and the next episode will be the first episode of Matthew.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: the first chapter of Matthew.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's the end episode because you know, we do a podcast.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, we'll read those things.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you could see that this is the first episode of Matthew.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's just not the first chapter.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: That's sort of the new testament.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: And Matthew and sort of.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: You're being so mean.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just, you know, I don't even know what we're talking about.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm just, I'm trying to deal the out here and see what we're doing.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: The book of Matthew, who that day?
- 0:41[SPEAKER_01]: Some dude.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: Why?
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: Where do you come from?
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: What's going on?
- 0:44[SPEAKER_01]: Here he's in the Bible.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: He's in the Bible.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I mean, wrote something in the Bible anyway.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: Did he go?
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'd probably not, based on what I know of the Bible.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, I thought since we're about to start the book of Matthew, that it would help to know who he is and why he wrote a book.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: And, um,
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: What who he's talking to and what are you saying and like what it's about.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I look some shit up.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I'm Matthew.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: You ready to talk about Matthew.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: Matthew.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, all right.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do this.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, dokey.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so we're gonna talk about the book of Matthew and Matthew himself.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but before I start that, I want to ask you, do you know anything about Matthew like the book or the dude?
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know a lie.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: I assume that he's supposedly one of the Apostle people or something or whatever the fuck they are.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know nothing.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: I know nothing.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: I know, that's about as much as I know.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I went into this knowing, okay, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John is the Ford, the gospel.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that's the first four books of the New Testament and those four guys tell the story of Jesus.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: And that's it.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's all I got.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: I know he's not Judas.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: He's not.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't, yeah.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: He's not Judas.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: He's not.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: I would like to hear that story there.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: I know I'm excited about that guy.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they, he didn't have a book.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he has a book.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I wouldn't give that guy a book.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: This is what I know.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_01]: It was my Jesus book.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't give him a book.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: This is what I know about the New Testament.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and then Acts.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like not.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: Talk about Acts all the time.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like not like an axe chops down the tree like like multiple acts of kindness right right yeah the book of acutus and that's it like that's like oh I also know that there's a book of Corinthians but I only know that because um okay so I knew about I knew that there was a book of Corinthians but I couldn't have told you if it was Old Testament or New Testament
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: until we read all of the Old Testament and Corinthians weren't in there and so then I knew oh, it must be New Testament then Yeah, yeah, and and the Corinthian is a character in the sandman.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: I also know that that's cool.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's the one with the the mouth in his eyes.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, remember
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: You can watch the same man kind of he was creepy.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I also house know that there's only one revelation No, I screwed that up early on.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: We started this podcast.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: I did I multiple times.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know I didn't know I didn't know why should I know we never read the Bible we know there's shit.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: That's why we're doing it Yeah, so and we didn't we did our best and we've done our best just to not be informed
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's not difficult.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: I was pretty easy.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's been pretty easy to continue, not no injection about the life.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: But it's fun hitting it all new.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: And then finding out what we fucked up afterwards?
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: It really makes it more fun.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, that's why I asked you the question about Matthew because I'm like, do you know anything about him?
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: Because I didn't.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: Other than he's wanted to know.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't even know.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: Disciple.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: See, I didn't know if I used the right word.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: Possible.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: He isn't a possible.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: There's something.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: So there's 28 chapters of the gospel according to Matthew.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's the actual name of the book.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: The gospel according to Matthew.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: Got it.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: On this 28 chapters.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: So okay.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's a short book.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: I guess in my opinion, unless the chapters are really long.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, we did, okay, here's a secret.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_00]: We did actually start reading them and we read them a little bit out of order from what we're doing this.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: So we do happen to know that the first three chapters are kind of short, so there's that.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: And just so you guys are aware, we will be releasing Matthew chapter one on Monday, this will be going out on Saturday.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: So if you want to catch it, it is available right now on Patreon as well as Matthew number two.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: Chapter two.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: And you got on to you about that.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: So just just say you're aware.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: Just two dollars a month.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: You can get, you know, you can get the right man right now.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: You can get access to these things that we do.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: Throw in that out there.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: So, okay, the gospel of Matthew or just Matthew, that's what this is called.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to just Matthew.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: Just Matthew.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I'm going to call it now on.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Every time you just Matthew, you're like the gospel of Matthew.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: It's the gospel of hoarding the Matthews.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: But we're going to Matthew, that's so pretentious.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of the four gospels of the New Testament that tell the story of Jesus' life and teachings.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I've said it multiple times, but can you tell me who those four are?
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: Matthew, Luke, uh, Paul?
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, ringo.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: that's the one I always go to.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: Matthew Mark, Luke and John.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: Matt, that's right.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: Matthew Mark, Luke and John.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I did know that I just, you had me on the spot and I'm like, oh shit, pop quiz.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: Pop quiz, that's right.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: I did, I do want to say this, I'd have the only research I did because I was very interested in the book.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: I read a book, listen to a book called Miss Quitting Jesus by Bart Airman and it was a very interesting,
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: an interesting book and I highly recommend it if you have not read it and you have questions about the problems with the gospels.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: So I haven't read that.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: Should I wait until after Matthew Mark Luke and John and maybe even X?
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: No you shouldn't.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's been so long since I read it that I haven't really been routine anything.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll then go back and really like play out these massive like
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, remember, this is what's going to happen here, but I got to, I get the gist of it.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the book of Matthew is not thought to have been written by the Apostle Matthew, FYI, I know that shocked you.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Not really.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus, just so you know, he had 12 Apostles.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: And, but, but only four of them get those first four books, the
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: I still think you should get his own book.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what was he really thinking about?
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: The name of the actual author of Matthew is not known.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's not named within the text.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: And it is likely that the book was written in Syria in the last quarter of the first century.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: So sometime around 75 to 180.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, it wasn't long after Jesus' death.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I mean, it was but then, you know, historical records and things like that, whatever.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_01]: That's all debatable too, but like, you know, sure.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: It keeps it in that realm.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: It was it was a written within memory, within living memory of Matthew having been a dude if he was a dude.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: That lived.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 8:17[UNKNOWN]: Okay.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it was likely written after the destruction of the second temple in 70 80, which helps explain the stronger criticism of religious authorities and concern with defining community identity.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: Got it.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to come across some of that.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: Well, well.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: spoiler alert, but they do lean heavily, heavily, until like prophecy fulfillment.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: Angel.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like prophecy.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: What the actual fuck, guys?
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, and so it's so picked up a fork and eat some raw manoodles, which fulfilled the prophecy.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: Like, no, that is not a thing that happens.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like stuff to then there.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, damn.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was kind of crazy.
- 9:06[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: Um, the book reflects a group of Jewish Christians in conflict with mainstream Judaism.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, has any new religion would be right.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: And it should be noted though that when we say Jewish Christians, they didn't call themselves that.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: They were Jewish.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: They were just Jewish people.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: They were Jewish followers of Christ.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: what they would have referred to themselves as if anything.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: Right, they hadn't had time to create their own title.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the title, it gets given to you after.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like you don't just start picking your own nickname, you know?
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: It was originally composed in Greek, although there is a possibility of an earlier version written and aromate.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: We're not sure about it, but definitely we should ask Indiana Jones.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: He probably would know he would know.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: Indiana Jones knows everything.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there was the I feel like that even came up.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: It did.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: It did.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: Scholars proposed that the superscription that whole according to Matthew was added sometime in the second century.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: So, remember, I told you that it's called the gospel of Matthew, according, oh, wait.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: The gospel, according to Matthew.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_00]: The according to Matthew was, that's what I'm saying was probably added later.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: They were like, hey, that's good.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: Let's attribute that to Matthew.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: Um,
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: So when I said, it was written in Syria most likely.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: Is that what I said?
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: Syria.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it was probably written in a city because it spread like fucking rapid fire.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: Hmm.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, it, it, it made the run.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it made the rounds.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: Um, the city is often thought to be antioc on the orangtis, which is the modern day city of end to kaya.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: There we go.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: And the writer was obviously most likely a male.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think that's that almost goes without saying.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and he would have been the head of a community, which helps again, I mean, people that could write and read back then.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: That doesn't shock me either.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, we're just like trying to put an X on everything.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's not.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: And like what you're left with is the
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: It was a Jewish Christian writing for Christians of similar background.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: And again, we're using the word Christian just to specify who this particular brand of Jewish people were.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so he would have been writing to people that were like him.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: be like, this happened isn't this neat and everybody around him that was like him would be like, I know, right?
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's so cool.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: The book likely reflects a community still very engaged with Jewish identity, not fully separated yet.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 12:25[UNKNOWN]: So
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I kept coming across the term Jewish Christian.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, that's not, why are we using that term?
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that explains why we came across so many plugins for the prophecies, right?
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're trying to tie it through, because the people that are talking to are Jewish.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: And so the Old Testament is all they know.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: and so they're trying to convey this to that crowd and that's that's the intended audience obviously.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: What's interesting is that this is the first book of the New Testament, but it's not the earliest book.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: So once again, we get to read everything out of order.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: Of course.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: Very excited.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: The book of Matthew, which is, you know, what we're about to read, we're talking about.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_00]: Used the book of Mark, which is the next one, Matthew Mark, Luke and John, Mark being the next one.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: As a source.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: Along with a collection of sayings known as the Q source, which is now lost.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: I see.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: So that's very interesting.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's called one of the synoptic gospels.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: Matthew Mark Luke and John are the synoptic gospels because they share the same stories in language as debatable.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: The other gospels.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: Matthew, Mark and Luke are the synoptic gospels.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure about John.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: He's separate.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's a separate one.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: Um, this gospel was written mainly for the Jewish people to show them that Jewish or I'm sorry that Jesus really is the Messiah.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: So, um, it was very much written to be like, this Jesus guy, he is it.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: He's the guy.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: Um, like the Gospels of Mark and Luke, Matthew tells many stories about Jesus' life.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: So that's what we're going to get into in this.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, really, I think the other ones are going to be the same as well.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like I will be giving this intro almost verbatim for the next several books of the Bible.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: But just changing out who it is.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: Which will be interesting.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: Because I don't know anything about any of them.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: nor do I. I mean not not not anything more than laymen, you know, whatever.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, right.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: I could have probably maybe if you gave me like a data, think about it, come up with all the names before we ever started doing this.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't even come up with it today, though.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: But I could have come up with it.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I could have.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I could.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: You were trying to stick Paul in there.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: I was.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: I was.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not sure I believe you.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, Matthew's gospel also talks about Jewish scripture.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: The book is highly organized, much more so than the gospel of Mark or the gospel of Luke.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: So that's interesting.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's built around five major teaching sections, which are called discourses, and it possibly is supposed to mirror the five books of the Torah,
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: the pen to two.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: Because one of its mean points, remember, it was to talk about how Jesus is the Messiah.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: It is fulfilling prophecy.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: They want to present Jesus as the quote unquote new Moses.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: That's what this book is specifically geared to do.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: So the five major
- 16:21[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: So that it's like look how it's the same.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: Isn't that cool.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's hitting all the marks and it's going to fit of the audience at the time.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, yeah, it's neat how quote unquote dot dot dot dot dot dot.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: You did that.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's not magic if you did it.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, it's magic if you say it's magic, right?
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: I guess.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: That means that's a basic of magic because magic isn't real.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: So if you say it's magic, and somebody believes that what you said, then it's magic.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just like, cool story, bro.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: That's what magic is.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: Matthew is one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus, which we know, it's traditionally considered identical to the guy Matthew, Matthew the dude, is traditionally considered identical to the following names, okay?
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: He's also referred to as Matthew the tax collector, Matthew the Apostle, Matthew the Evangelist,
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: Levi son of alphayus.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's not confusing at all.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: And James's brother.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you know, James's brother.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: Because later on, we'll see a mention of James, um, who is the son of alphayus, and Matthew is the son of alphayus.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: So clearly Matthew and Levi or Matthew and James,
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: No Matthew is Levi.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_00]: James and Levi are the son of Alpha.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: Again, not confusing at all.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: Matthew is Levi, I don't know why.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: Coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, coo, c
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: Jesus was born, did his thing, died, hypothetically got resurrected, resurrected and came back for a few days and then pieced out.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, if you're somebody who's writing in the account, a quote unquote account of this, you have to be a library in that time.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: I bet all of them were live during that time.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_00]: According to, you know, well, the thing is is this book is thought to have been written sometime after 75 this dude died in 68 right.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen the apostles or whatever they're there.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: They're the ones that are going to have been alive.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_00]: David, I'm talking about the apostle Matthew.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's we're on the same page.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't I wasn't getting what you were saying.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: So he's supposed to have died in seven, like 70, when I just say 68.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: And then the thing got destroyed in 70.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: The thing, the second.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: The temple.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the temple.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: So Matthew died in 68.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: The temple got destroyed in 70.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: And then the book got written in 75.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: Got it.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: if we're putting this in a timeline.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: Which you wanted me to kind of.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_01]: So that's that's why they know that it was okay.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: That makes sense.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: So he either died as a martyr or I'm sorry.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: He died as a martyr in either Ethiopia or Persia, which would be modern day Iran.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_01]: That's wildly different areas.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_01]: But okay, sure.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_01]: So he died though.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_01]: He did die as a murder, right, which means he would kill two places vastly far apart from each other.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I guess I shouldn't say vastly, but they are they're not close together.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_00]: He'd be opia and Iran are not near each other.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: That is correct.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: And what's interesting, I just want to make sure we know he was killed, because when we say he died as a martyr, that's what that means.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: He was killed.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: So we know he was killed.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, okay.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: The question is just where and by whom?
- 21:00[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: Um, his tomb, though, is located in the crypt of Solerno Cathedral in southern Italy.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_01]: So we know where his crypt is.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_01]: I guess.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's in Italy.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_01]: But we can't find Jesus.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_00]: We can't find Jesus, but we know where Matthew was buried.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: He's the same.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_01]: If you say so.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: He was taken as a saint.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: He was saint to find.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_01]: Is anybody like?
- 21:26[SPEAKER_01]: And that just seems so dig them up and do some dandy and now there's a find like what like this is Let's find the book out of it.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_01]: I so weird.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: I look listen listen I 110% believe you.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so I'm not saying let's dig it up to prove it I'm saying let's dig it up because I am so curious about Matthew.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: I want to know as much about him as possible.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_00]: So let's dig him up
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: they bury some really important scrolls with them, right?
- 21:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like we should, just for the sake of knowing I believe in Jesus.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_00]: I can't get a meeting you where you are.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_00]: I believe you.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: That's 100 percent.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_00]: That is Matthew.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_01]: I say we started campaign.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_01]: Dig up Matthew.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: Dig up Matthew.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: I know where he is.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_00]: I found him.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_00]: He's a little bit.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how he died in either Ethiopia or Iran and then his body ended up in Italy.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: But there it is.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_00]: But there it is.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_00]: There's a crypt.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: And it's over there.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_00]: I'm telling you, I think that we should dig that shit up and we should study it because I love studying things.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_01]: We should, you know, as you usually say, we should make a t-shirt to get Matthew.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: Dig up Matthew.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm just studying now.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's like, we'll do a big campaign, you know, to get Matthew.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm for it.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so that is what we know about Matthew.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_00]: I've just told you everything that we know about Matthew, the book, the man,
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_00]: That's all we got.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: Who may or may, you know, who didn't write the book.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: He did all right.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe influenced it possibly.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: There is some thoughts that that happened.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_00]: There is some thought that one of his disciples.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: Certainly Matthew had some little bootlick in followers.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: We call those disciples, I guess.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_00]: And one of them guys,
- 23:19[SPEAKER_00]: written it on his behalf.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: So that would make sense, I guess.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_00]: I just find it super interesting that the whole purpose of the block is totally to push the story of Jesus as the Promised Messiah and to frame him as the new Moses.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_00]: And oh, oh, oh, here's another thing that came up a lot.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_00]: The kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of heaven, like that phrase, we're going to stumble over it.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be on every, like, page, every fucking, it's going to be just strewn throughout, like, you know, how like when you meet cookies, you can't put enough chocolate chip cookies in it.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: You can shop for chips.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: You said you said chocolate chip cookies in it.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_01]: You don't put chocolate chip cookies in chocolate chip cookies.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean you could.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: No, you can't have too many chocolate chips in a chocolate chip cookie, right?
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they thought that the term kingdom of heaven.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's a chocolate chip.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_01]: Got it.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_00]: And they put too many.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: I see.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: They put it too.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: They found out how many was too many.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: And it was all that was this many.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: And that is going to be on like every page.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there was a lot of like repeating.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_00]: It was so funny.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: You'll test when to.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I thought you were talking.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: No, not like the old test man had a lot of repeating bullshit to and what section of the Bible we were in, but there was always something where I was like, oh my god.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have to say that word again?
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: There's that phrase again.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love to repeat them.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: So well, apparently the book of Matthew, we're going to see the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of heaven.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm not excited about that, but that's what I got.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: Well, now we know all about Matthew and we are ready to start the New Testament.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: We are very excited about that.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_01]: Again, it'll be available on Monday on the feed or you can go get it right now on our Patreon two bucks a month.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_00]: You should do that.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: You should do that.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_01]: It was a fun episode.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: I can tell you that.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: And we're very excited to get started on this whole thing.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: And if you want to stay current with us and ahead of the stream, you could join us every Tuesday at 10pm Eastern on Discord for our live event, which is going to be staying there for now.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_01]: We had talked about it a couple of times in the previous episodes where we might be changing it.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: there's too much change so we're just leaving at the same.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_01]: So, Tuesday, 10 p.m. Eastern discord.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: This is what it's all about.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: The New Testament.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: Because this is what everybody says but you were kind of nervous to start this.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_00]: I was scared to start the New Testament because it's too close to
- 26:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like the people that we know because that's whatever.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_01]: This is whatever.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody is about the New Testament.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody is about the New Testament.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: That's when they talk about Christianity.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they mean.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: This is what's going to offend people.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's what's going to be that thing that, you know, this is what my parents believe.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_01]: This is what our friends who say the Old Testament take it or leave it, right?
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: Like, okay, even Jewish people's like argue and struggle against and question the old testament.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like they, they haven't tired discourses about it.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_00]: They don't mind saying, I'm not sure about this.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about it.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: But Christians just blindly follow.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: Christians don't even know what's in their own book and they will beat you up and kill you over it.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: Ray Ray.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: The Jewish people are like, I don't know, let's write some more books about our thoughts on it.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: Like their whole thing is like arguing it out.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_00]: Which I love.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: I love that about Jewish people.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, there are some that are very.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I'm being very like flattening it into a monolith.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: You're right.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_00]: Same with Christianity.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm putting that as a monolith in that they are you're right.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: They are not all ignorant folks and to be fair.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: We actually went to a church for a while where we had a pastor that was very progressive exactly exactly
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I was very nervous to start the new testament.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_00]: And here we are, reading the book of Matthew.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I think we're going to have some fun.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: Well, if you don't join Patreon, we'll see you on Monday.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: Bye.
