- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest is the executive producer Laugh Mob Laugh Tracks,
- 0:03Speaker 1: which is in the second season on True TV. But
- 0:07Speaker 1: let's go back. Let's go back. This is with me
- 0:10Speaker 1: and him, you know, step into the world. Because he's
- 0:13Speaker 1: also co created with Russell Simmons the HBO Death Comedy Jam.
- 0:19Speaker 1: He was working behind the scenes recruiting the best, unrecognized,
- 0:23Speaker 1: unknown or just starting out comedians in the world as
- 0:26Speaker 1: a producer, a talent scout, a good friend, many industry
- 0:30Speaker 1: influences considering him a career maker because he hitped my career.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I would not be sitting here if he had not
- 0:37Speaker 1: chosen me to be on Death Comedy Jam. We'll talk
- 0:39Speaker 1: about that during the interview. He surely can be credited
- 0:41Speaker 1: with discovering Bernie Mack, Dave Chappelle. I did Dave Chappelle
- 0:45Speaker 1: here and I did Death Comedy Jam together. Chris Tucker,
- 0:48Speaker 1: Bill Bellaman, that's my board, got him on my Speed
- 0:50Speaker 1: Died Secondly Entertainment. He's done my show Money Make Conversation
- 0:53Speaker 1: many times. Mike ELPs, that's a fool. Did the movie
- 0:56Speaker 1: with where Steve did it with be and say we
- 1:00Speaker 1: did that movie together. Monique, Monique, I did our TV
- 1:03Speaker 1: show The Parkers, Tracy Morgan that food know about him,
- 1:06Speaker 1: did a comedy concert that the Houston Arena and Houston,
- 1:09Speaker 1: Texas with and a multitude of other comedians. I'm just
- 1:12Speaker 1: letting you know what he's done. He's allowed me to
- 1:14Speaker 1: have a lane of participation. Please welcome to money making conversations,
- 1:18Speaker 1: my man, Bob Sumner. Right now. Man, I'm so proud
- 1:28Speaker 1: of you. I don't know what you got that long?
- 1:35Speaker 1: I said, you still got that long more? Absolutely, absolutely,
- 1:43Speaker 1: I'm telling something. Let's let's go back, man, because you
- 1:46Speaker 1: know we're gonna talk about laugh Mark, which is a
- 1:48Speaker 1: really it's it's you know, I've watched several episodes. I'm
- 1:52Speaker 1: a fan of it because it's like a sketch comedy
- 1:54Speaker 1: show tied into a stand up comedy show, which is
- 1:58Speaker 1: really fascinating from a creative standpoint, because you know, I'm
- 2:02Speaker 1: watching that show and because of the way they produced
- 2:05Speaker 1: and the stand up coming, I've already done with it.
- 2:08Speaker 1: That's excited about because I do want to talk about
- 2:09Speaker 1: our journey together and the comics and comedians lives. You
- 2:13Speaker 1: change and the facts changed the way we we look
- 2:15Speaker 1: at comedy today. From Steve Harvey to Eccentric Entertainment. Who's
- 2:19Speaker 1: on CBS right now, Dio hugually has a syndicated a
- 2:23Speaker 1: nationally syndicated show. And of course Bernie Mack, who would
- 2:26Speaker 1: always be legendary and what he did. Unfortunately health reasons
- 2:29Speaker 1: took him away. But there are other comics out there
- 2:31Speaker 1: who walked on that stage, who was established, who still
- 2:34Speaker 1: came on that stage and you know, built their brand out.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And we're talking like the you know, the Chris Tucker
- 2:39Speaker 1: did five minutes and then became an international star five
- 2:44Speaker 1: minutes on Death Comedy. You know, you know Andy Grifford,
- 2:52Speaker 1: he did Michael Jackson and become a superstar, saying wow, man,
- 2:56Speaker 1: let me, can I just think before we go into
- 2:59Speaker 1: all of that, you had something already that you pretty
- 3:01Speaker 1: much hit the nail on the head man Um in
- 3:06Speaker 1: terms of why why this show um was created, Laugh minds,
- 3:11Speaker 1: laugh tracks was really based on America. Really didn't know
- 3:16Speaker 1: how Death Comedy jam was built? You do? You do?
- 3:20Speaker 1: You know everybody always see the faces? Do you know
- 3:23Speaker 1: the big names? Definite? Like everybody thinks that Diana Ross
- 3:27Speaker 1: discovered the Jackson fives, and really it was Bobby Tella
- 3:30Speaker 1: from the Vancouver's. You know, people don't know that that part.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But um, what happened with me was I watched the
- 3:40Speaker 1: landscape of where comedy had gone out of the nineties,
- 3:44Speaker 1: you know, out of the nineties. Man, everybody was getting
- 3:46Speaker 1: the sitcoms. People was meeting people said, didn't know Steve,
- 3:51Speaker 1: but they came to Death Comedy Jam and got a
- 3:53Speaker 1: TV show. Tracy Morgan didn't know Martin, but he did
- 3:58Speaker 1: what he did and then he got on the right
- 4:00Speaker 1: and show so many things like that, including you know,
- 4:03Speaker 1: I brought Dolomite to Deaf Comedy Jam. I bought while
- 4:06Speaker 1: man Steve the Deaf Comedy Jam to mix the new
- 4:09Speaker 1: with the old. And what happened is when Deaf Comedy
- 4:14Speaker 1: Jam went off the air, and then the HBO brought
- 4:17Speaker 1: the Chris Rocks Show into light and things of that nature.
- 4:21Speaker 1: People don't understand that. And you know for a fact,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I was going all over the country finding these comedians
- 4:28Speaker 1: in little hole in the walls and this, that and
- 4:31Speaker 1: the other, and it just became magical after a while.
- 4:35Speaker 1: But then all of that stopped and I kept the
- 4:39Speaker 1: show going on the road where Kevin Hart won a
- 4:42Speaker 1: contest for me Cocobe Brown wont to contest for me
- 4:46Speaker 1: se Ray Davis. So the talent was still there, but
- 4:49Speaker 1: we didn't really have a vehicle to for them. So
- 4:54Speaker 1: with that being said, you know, the two thousand and
- 4:58Speaker 1: two thousand and ten, some of these people started coming on,
- 5:02Speaker 1: but I knew that there was the next generation. Just
- 5:05Speaker 1: like after Michael Jordan's you had Kobe Bryant doing Lebron James,
- 5:10Speaker 1: the same thing goes with comedy. So I decided to
- 5:13Speaker 1: go to l A and trying to build the brand. Okay,
- 5:17Speaker 1: my own brand and and and laugh Mob is nothing
- 5:21Speaker 1: more than the affter them. For MOB is more of
- 5:23Speaker 1: Bob's best. So what I would do is I would
- 5:27Speaker 1: go into these these big offices and talk to these people.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But nobody really knew that it was Bob something that
- 5:34Speaker 1: did this. And I'm trying to bring them a sketch
- 5:37Speaker 1: show as possible so more fresh stand up. Nobody's hearing me.
- 5:42Speaker 1: So you know what happened. I said, I'll just do
- 5:45Speaker 1: it myself and do it in a certain way where
- 5:49Speaker 1: I can take all these stand up comedians who don't
- 5:53Speaker 1: have great tapes. You know, after the show, they're trying
- 5:57Speaker 1: to pedal their tapes, but you get the tape and
- 6:00Speaker 1: like um video from shows, comic view or whatever that
- 6:04Speaker 1: they've been or nobody wants that. They want something fresh.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So also you could take a fresh tape. If I
- 6:10Speaker 1: identify who deserves a half hour or hour special, I'll
- 6:14Speaker 1: shoot it myself and then try to sell it to
- 6:17Speaker 1: a showtime or HBO, which it actually worked. But I
- 6:21Speaker 1: took all of the sixteen hours of material that I
- 6:24Speaker 1: had the audio, and I treated it just like a
- 6:27Speaker 1: Thanksgiving turkey. Okay, you take that material and just like
- 6:32Speaker 1: you take a turkey and you and you have the turkey,
- 6:35Speaker 1: then you turn it into uh um, a turkey sandwich,
- 6:40Speaker 1: U turkey, catch a roll um, you turn it into
- 6:44Speaker 1: turkey hash. You turn it into turkey. You know, you
- 6:47Speaker 1: just do that. And that's what I did with the
- 6:49Speaker 1: stand up. And we took the audio that had stories,
- 6:53Speaker 1: the comedians that had stories to tell, and some guys
- 6:56Speaker 1: out of my office decided that they're going to try
- 6:59Speaker 1: to take and turn them into comedy videos and we
- 7:03Speaker 1: put them on YouTube. We started getting sixty seventy million views.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Before you know it, it comes to networks trying to
- 7:10Speaker 1: you know, how can we be a part of this
- 7:12Speaker 1: right here we are all. You know, first of all,
- 7:14Speaker 1: let's let's really if you watch the shows. If you
- 7:17Speaker 1: watch the show, I'm telling the stand up comic is
- 7:20Speaker 1: on stage, okay, during his routine, and then they will
- 7:23Speaker 1: seamlessly transition into a video that they're referencing their stand
- 7:27Speaker 1: up comic, and you're seeing. This is the cool thing
- 7:30Speaker 1: about it. The actor or actors that they've chosen are
- 7:34Speaker 1: lip sinking the dialogue from the comedian. I mean, dead on,
- 7:40Speaker 1: dead on. That's what I really loved about it because
- 7:43Speaker 1: I was like, wow, I mean, so whether it's a
- 7:45Speaker 1: child actor or an adult actor, they are matching it.
- 7:48Speaker 1: You know, male, female, it doesn't matter. And that to
- 7:51Speaker 1: me is a female comedian or male comedian. That's what
- 7:55Speaker 1: I really really loved about the show. Was like, wow,
- 7:58Speaker 1: this is really slick. You know, I got the re
- 8:01Speaker 1: enactment of the comedy routine, but to be able to
- 8:05Speaker 1: have the comic on stage and then to take give
- 8:08Speaker 1: you the visual of their joke. That's what you're doing,
- 8:11Speaker 1: the visual of their joke while they're doing the routine.
- 8:13Speaker 1: It's pretty impressive. Ball that's pretty pretty that's pretty pretty creative. Brother,
- 8:18Speaker 1: Thanks man, thanks, but again, Jim, Jim, Marv, this kid,
- 8:23Speaker 1: jimmal and carlos Man. You know, we would just be
- 8:26Speaker 1: hanging out and be talking about different ideas and stuff.
- 8:29Speaker 1: And they sent me that first one on YouTube and
- 8:32Speaker 1: Led Grant with the kid with Tony Baker playing Red
- 8:36Speaker 1: Glant and it was to the kid. The father didn't
- 8:39Speaker 1: want the kid, right, you know. And then I had
- 8:44Speaker 1: with g and you know, this is long before the phenomenon,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you know, but that's the beat of you. You have
- 8:52Speaker 1: an eye for talent. When we come back, gonna talk
- 8:54Speaker 1: about you. How he discovered Rushawan McDonald as he told
- 8:57Speaker 1: me no, and then I had to do some work
- 9:00Speaker 1: to get on death Comedy. Jab. This is our relationship
- 9:02Speaker 1: really started. Bob Something that brother, I'm so happy. I'm
- 9:05Speaker 1: so proud of you. Just hearing your voice. I love
- 9:08Speaker 1: that little grabbling voice to yours. Bad. I know I'm
- 9:10Speaker 1: talking to my man, Bom Something. He created it. He
- 9:13Speaker 1: made us all man. He opened a gateway of success
- 9:16Speaker 1: for African American comedians in a very general market world.
- 9:20Speaker 1: We'll be back with more money making conversations. I just
- 9:23Speaker 1: with Sean McDonald and you're listening to money making conversations.
- 9:26Speaker 1: He's on the show. When I said he's on the show,
- 9:28Speaker 1: is that the executive producer of Laugh made that's m
- 9:31Speaker 1: O B B Laugh Tracks, which is in its second
- 9:34Speaker 1: season on True TV. But the heart of our conversation
- 9:37Speaker 1: is relationships. Uh, you know, how do you extend a
- 9:41Speaker 1: body of work over years, over decades? How do you
- 9:44Speaker 1: how do you allow comedy? Like some people said, comedy
- 9:48Speaker 1: can be uh, throwback comedy can be current comedy, especially
- 9:52Speaker 1: nowadays when comedy is being a PC me too. You know,
- 9:56Speaker 1: you can't do the jokes that you did in the naties.
- 9:58Speaker 1: You know, in fact, some people comed who done jokes
- 10:00Speaker 1: in the nanties have gotten in trouble because of the
- 10:03Speaker 1: people went back and found it on on social media,
- 10:06Speaker 1: founding on an old comedy special. So when I look
- 10:09Speaker 1: at your show that you're doing now, Bob, you know
- 10:11Speaker 1: what I'm talking about. You know, in Death Death Comedy
- 10:13Speaker 1: Jam came out. You know I did, I taped in
- 10:16Speaker 1: the N two. How how's your how's your view on
- 10:20Speaker 1: stand up comedy today? With the rules being changed so much?
- 10:25Speaker 1: You know, it's really interesting how the rules have changed.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Where you know, I I go back to the days
- 10:33Speaker 1: when you could smoke cigarette, you had cigarette commercials. You know,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I go, I go back to the days when you
- 10:41Speaker 1: couldn't watch Elvis from the waist down, you know, and
- 10:46Speaker 1: it was back then, and now you have comedy. The
- 10:52Speaker 1: comedians can't be politically you know, they have to be
- 10:55Speaker 1: politically correct and everything. Yet on your smartphone you can
- 11:00Speaker 1: watch porny. Like I don't, I don't understand what what's
- 11:05Speaker 1: going on in terms of I I was always told
- 11:09Speaker 1: that it was a thing called freedom of speech, right,
- 11:14Speaker 1: but now it doesn't seem like it's it's flowing that way,
- 11:18Speaker 1: and I don't know. I don't know what to say
- 11:21Speaker 1: or do about it. But I also think that part
- 11:25Speaker 1: of the reason why. And I have this term called
- 11:28Speaker 1: social medias, okay, and those are those comedians that you
- 11:33Speaker 1: see on YouTube for three minutes being like silly. Those
- 11:39Speaker 1: are the people that are getting booked now because they're
- 11:42Speaker 1: not saying anything, you know, they're not saying anything relevant
- 11:47Speaker 1: to how people are living. And that's what stand up
- 11:50Speaker 1: for me was stand up was an art, not a hustle,
- 11:54Speaker 1: right right. So so I'm kind of like, I'm kind
- 11:57Speaker 1: of like toring. Even when I look at David, you
- 12:00Speaker 1: know the six stays. You know, he's the same stand
- 12:05Speaker 1: up commuting that he was when I met him when
- 12:08Speaker 1: he was eighteen years or you know what I mean.
- 12:11Speaker 1: It's just that the things that he was saying then
- 12:13Speaker 1: nobody was really paying attention to. But now since he's
- 12:17Speaker 1: become a star, people are dissecting everything he says. But
- 12:22Speaker 1: everything he says is real life stuff, right, So I
- 12:28Speaker 1: don't know, I don't I don't know how to take it. Yeah, well,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I know that that as a as a stand up
- 12:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna be stand up till I die, you know,
- 12:35Speaker 1: because I'm naturally funny. I don't go out there and
- 12:38Speaker 1: do set routines. But I know. And when Death Comedy
- 12:41Speaker 1: Jam came out on HBO, uh, you had to audition
- 12:46Speaker 1: live or you could send a tape to Mr Bob something.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Well Roa McDonald but got his best tape since the Barb,
- 12:55Speaker 1: and Barb was frank. He said, Rashan, look listen to Rashan.
- 12:58Speaker 1: You are funny, but all your performances are in front
- 13:02Speaker 1: of white audiences, he said. He said, I don't know
- 13:05Speaker 1: if your comedy will translate like that. He said, do
- 13:09Speaker 1: you have to go and show me what you can
- 13:11Speaker 1: do in front of an audience that their favorites with
- 13:14Speaker 1: death comedy Jam does No. He was just protecting me.
- 13:18Speaker 1: But Bob didn't want to do was just he wouldn't.
- 13:20Speaker 1: He wasn't putting people out there just be booking him.
- 13:22Speaker 1: He had an eye for the understanding. This is the
- 13:24Speaker 1: market we're going after. What you're doing over there, you
- 13:26Speaker 1: kill it, you kill it, but it may not translate.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And until you can show me that it will translate,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I gotta hold off on the opportunity with death comedy Jam.
- 13:35Speaker 1: So so what I had to do. I had to
- 13:38Speaker 1: go to Oakland Ball. Bob said, Hey, I said, Bob,
- 13:41Speaker 1: they have an Oakly Comedy competition. He has the right
- 13:43Speaker 1: place to go with shall that's the right place to go.
- 13:47Speaker 1: And I went out there. I went out there and
- 13:49Speaker 1: I killed. I made the finals of the competition, and
- 13:52Speaker 1: Bob said, you know something, you can do death comedition
- 13:55Speaker 1: and he booked me. But I had to work. I
- 13:58Speaker 1: had to work, you know. I. You know the thing
- 14:00Speaker 1: about it, The reason I tell people that story is
- 14:02Speaker 1: that it shows you that you had rules I could have.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I could have powered it. I could have bad mouth
- 14:08Speaker 1: box on it. But he should look at it, Bro,
- 14:10Speaker 1: You're funny because I'm not in the business of embarrassing you.
- 14:14Speaker 1: A book and a show with comics, you don't deliver
- 14:16Speaker 1: results on the show, I lose my job too. Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 1: The funny thing about that, though, is, you know, the
- 14:23Speaker 1: Bay Area Comedy Competition is finally coming back after this
- 14:26Speaker 1: long high. Edita also, I think that that that was
- 14:30Speaker 1: very important for a stand up comedian to see if
- 14:34Speaker 1: they really had the chops and not that really differentiated
- 14:38Speaker 1: the real comedians with the comics, and see you as
- 14:42Speaker 1: a real comedian and you was able to take it.
- 14:46Speaker 1: He was able to take what I had said to
- 14:48Speaker 1: you and work on it, and then you came out
- 14:51Speaker 1: there and it was like yes, and Bob was right.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I just shifted up a little bit. Now, I just
- 14:57Speaker 1: shifted up a little bit because if I just walked
- 15:01Speaker 1: out that, you know, that's a beauty. And in our relationship,
- 15:05Speaker 1: you know, open a very popular comedy club called the
- 15:07Speaker 1: Hip Hop Comedy Stuff. He came down to Houston audition
- 15:10Speaker 1: and comedians there. So that's what we're talking about relationship.
- 15:13Speaker 1: It was not only from a standpoint he and I
- 15:15Speaker 1: shared the same love giving people opportunities, finding fresh talent
- 15:20Speaker 1: and exposed them to a bigger model. And that's what
- 15:23Speaker 1: your show doing right now with with Laugh Mall Laugh Tracks,
- 15:26Speaker 1: which is in the second season on True TV. Now
- 15:29Speaker 1: you know the other part to it, though, I just
- 15:31Speaker 1: wanted to add and is you didn't have to. It
- 15:34Speaker 1: didn't just because that Cham didn't mean to go out
- 15:37Speaker 1: there and just be runchy. But it's such about where
- 15:40Speaker 1: you are with with your stand up you know what
- 15:43Speaker 1: I mean. It's just about being funny. You was never runchy,
- 15:47Speaker 1: but you was able just to be like funny with it.
- 15:50Speaker 1: And what happens with last Mob Laugh Tracks is I'm
- 15:54Speaker 1: thinking stand up comedy, the jokes that you could paint
- 16:00Speaker 1: the picture of the story that you're telling. It ain't
- 16:03Speaker 1: a one minute on and off. It's a three minute
- 16:07Speaker 1: story with the beginning, a middle, and an end. You know.
- 16:11Speaker 1: So I think that what we're doing this last on
- 16:13Speaker 1: our Lab Tractors, they're bringing stand up comedy back to
- 16:17Speaker 1: the part form that it was so you can see
- 16:20Speaker 1: more of African Americans and you know, just people with
- 16:23Speaker 1: flavor even have stands, um have sitcoms because you know,
- 16:28Speaker 1: from Ray Romano to d l Too to Berney. Their
- 16:33Speaker 1: sitcoms was based off of their stand up. You know,
- 16:38Speaker 1: that's where it is. Yeah, you know, it's really funny
- 16:40Speaker 1: because you know what I was looking at. I was going, like,
- 16:42Speaker 1: my routine I should do on snoring. How's it the
- 16:44Speaker 1: people who fall asleep? Who snore managed to fall asleep first?
- 16:48Speaker 1: You know that we are a perfect routine for what
- 16:51Speaker 1: you're doing, because that whole time, while I'm doing a routine,
- 16:53Speaker 1: you see a guy in the bed, he's snowing, his
- 16:55Speaker 1: wife looking at him going sounded like a fog horn
- 16:58Speaker 1: over there. All that are out of the house. You know,
- 17:01Speaker 1: you know we're doing a little So that's so I was.
- 17:04Speaker 1: I was, I was, I was having so much fun
- 17:07Speaker 1: looking at the creative side of it. But I'm gonna
- 17:09Speaker 1: just tell you what sold me on. It was the
- 17:12Speaker 1: lip sync being able to match up the dialogue of
- 17:15Speaker 1: what the actors were saying with what the comedian was saying.
- 17:19Speaker 1: That was, I'm gonna tell you some man that is
- 17:21Speaker 1: dead on from a comedic standpoint, Dude, I participate in
- 17:25Speaker 1: be a part of the end of day of the
- 17:26Speaker 1: week because you're not. You're not. Because I remember a
- 17:30Speaker 1: long time ago, you know, when they had BT comic view,
- 17:33Speaker 1: they tried to do something like this, but they did it.
- 17:36Speaker 1: So but if the comics came across in a negative light,
- 17:40Speaker 1: and so this right here is so positive. Plus, man,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you can just drop those videos on social media, go
- 17:46Speaker 1: viral because you're telling the story because, like you said,
- 17:49Speaker 1: it really is on a bigger perspective. Whether it's Tim
- 17:52Speaker 1: Allen you know what I'm saying, or like s Ray Romano,
- 17:55Speaker 1: Uh Seinfeld, Steve Harvey. All these people are doing are
- 17:59Speaker 1: taking license of their comedic life and putting it too
- 18:02Speaker 1: a half hour sitcom. That's what you're doing with multiple
- 18:05Speaker 1: community is the other part to it. Though the other
- 18:08Speaker 1: part too, it is okay, you take a song, all right,
- 18:12Speaker 1: No different than and when you talk about the lip
- 18:14Speaker 1: syncing and stuff, people would go to soul training and
- 18:17Speaker 1: take your lips and soul. Right did you take this?
- 18:22Speaker 1: You take a joke like you teat to the joke
- 18:26Speaker 1: like it's your soone, okay. Instead of making a music
- 18:30Speaker 1: video now you're making in comedy video base once of
- 18:34Speaker 1: your three minutes. Yes, so now what happens is you
- 18:38Speaker 1: own that thing. So when other people were out of
- 18:41Speaker 1: here like it was this thing and people could have
- 18:43Speaker 1: the same premise, but how do you present it? This
- 18:46Speaker 1: is the way you present that you're my love is Free,
- 18:50Speaker 1: And somebody else might have the same song my Love
- 18:52Speaker 1: is Free, but it's done a different way. You know
- 18:55Speaker 1: what I mean. But it's your, it's your song, it's
- 18:58Speaker 1: your it's your joke. I'll tell this is talking to
- 19:00Speaker 1: Bob Sumner. He's the executive producer of Laugh Mall Laugh Tracks,
- 19:04Speaker 1: which is in the second season on True TV, and
- 19:06Speaker 1: incredible founder of Comedians. He's an impact of careers, not
- 19:10Speaker 1: only in my careers, but careers like Cedric the entertainer
- 19:13Speaker 1: of course, Bernie mc monique. The list goes on, Chris Tucker,
- 19:16Speaker 1: The list goes on and on, people who have changed
- 19:18Speaker 1: the landscape. You know, I look at you like a
- 19:20Speaker 1: grandfather of all of us because of the fact that you,
- 19:24Speaker 1: you know, you touched us in such a cool way.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Ball when you look at you know, like when I
- 19:29Speaker 1: looked at the fact of what Steve and I did
- 19:30Speaker 1: for daytime television, you know, family, if you talk show,
- 19:33Speaker 1: and I look at Cedric when I was interviewing Cedric said,
- 19:36Speaker 1: that's et Cedric seeing you on CVS, I said, I
- 19:38Speaker 1: know you did the w B. I know you did
- 19:40Speaker 1: the but you on CBS now and he went, You're
- 19:43Speaker 1: right with Shawn, that's a big difference. You know, I
- 19:46Speaker 1: look at that man, you know, I look at I.
- 19:48Speaker 1: I just I just marvel man at the uh at
- 19:51Speaker 1: what what what's being accomplished across the board? Well? What
- 19:55Speaker 1: what is your take on all that? Man? Because because
- 19:57Speaker 1: all you were doing was just looking for known talent
- 20:00Speaker 1: or some talent that was known and putting on a show.
- 20:03Speaker 1: HBO green lit the show and and it turned into
- 20:06Speaker 1: a phenomenon, man selling out arenas. Wow, Well my thing
- 20:11Speaker 1: is this man? And in my lane, nobody was really
- 20:14Speaker 1: doing a lot of things I was doing, Like, for one,
- 20:18Speaker 1: you know, I started out in the music industry and
- 20:20Speaker 1: I was a DJ, and I bought the DJ constant
- 20:24Speaker 1: to commity. You know, That's why I had plead the
- 20:28Speaker 1: d jay on the Comedy Game, because I was doing
- 20:30Speaker 1: that in my little rooms that I had, And you
- 20:34Speaker 1: know I always did that. Um Berry Gordy and what
- 20:38Speaker 1: he did with um taking all these young talented artists
- 20:42Speaker 1: out of the boost the projects and what have you
- 20:45Speaker 1: and churched them into superstars and music I pretty much
- 20:48Speaker 1: wanted to do that same thing this comedy, and a
- 20:52Speaker 1: couple of a couple of quotes that happened recently that
- 20:55Speaker 1: I saw that was kind of interesting. Mike Epps in
- 20:58Speaker 1: Every magazine stated that I was like the Yoda or
- 21:02Speaker 1: Mozart of And it was crazy because just Um recently
- 21:09Speaker 1: Academy Award winner who's one of my best friends, Regina King,
- 21:12Speaker 1: we was on the teleconference and she was trying to
- 21:15Speaker 1: explain to the people who I was, and she said,
- 21:19Speaker 1: if anybody saw Reggie Hudland's Um Black Godfather, The Story
- 21:24Speaker 1: of Clarence Ablon, the documentary, she said, well, if Clarence
- 21:28Speaker 1: Aberhood was you know who he is. To the music industry.
- 21:33Speaker 1: She said that I'm the black guy from the comedy.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And when you look at it, when it goes back
- 21:40Speaker 1: to the continent, you know, there's there's only a few
- 21:45Speaker 1: comedians who I haven't had an imprint on that are
- 21:49Speaker 1: doing big things right now. And one of them, like
- 21:53Speaker 1: when we talked about you know, your your career, and
- 21:56Speaker 1: how I had said to you you needed to like
- 21:59Speaker 1: try to find you know, what you're doing, so you
- 22:02Speaker 1: could come over to you know, the urban side of things.
- 22:05Speaker 1: The same thing happened with a young lady by the
- 22:07Speaker 1: name of one to site. Okay, I'm so happy to
- 22:11Speaker 1: see Wanda in her career, but she fell in right
- 22:16Speaker 1: when Deaf Jim was moving out, and and and and
- 22:20Speaker 1: the trip is. Wanda used to be my go to,
- 22:23Speaker 1: like you as my Houston go to. One of the
- 22:26Speaker 1: Wanda would be the one who would set up my
- 22:29Speaker 1: showcases in the d c A. But she never once said, Bob,
- 22:34Speaker 1: I'm doing this for you put me on the show
- 22:36Speaker 1: was even about that. She was just going about it
- 22:39Speaker 1: her way because she knew how to be entrepreneurial. Then
- 22:44Speaker 1: she was looking at she was doing this stuff and
- 22:46Speaker 1: now look at her the big time to produce it
- 22:49Speaker 1: and that thing. I'm so proud of her, you know,
- 22:51Speaker 1: but it's just it's ways to do it. Because I
- 22:54Speaker 1: still have some comedians from back in the day. They're
- 22:56Speaker 1: still upset me because they didn't get there because the
- 23:02Speaker 1: right right right right right right right right right right.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Well you, Bob, thank you for coming on my show. Um, definitely, Uh.
- 23:11Speaker 1: This show has been amazing money making conversation because it
- 23:13Speaker 1: allowed me to really realize my personal impact in the
- 23:16Speaker 1: industry and then talk to people who are making an
- 23:18Speaker 1: impact even today, decades later, and you're one of the people,
- 23:23Speaker 1: one of the stars of establishing a brand of comedic
- 23:26Speaker 1: comedic talent in the industry as so many different levels.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I'm talking to Bob Summer, executive Sumner, executive producer of
- 23:33Speaker 1: Laugh Mob Laugh Tracks, which is on in the second
- 23:36Speaker 1: season on True TV and you can see it on
- 23:38Speaker 1: Friday nights. Bob, thank you for calling my show my man.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Brother. Listen one last thing, you know,
- 23:44Speaker 1: I'm also of Curative Comedy at the Apollo Theater. See
- 23:48Speaker 1: see see now that come on, now we're gonna let's
- 23:50Speaker 1: gonna extend this interview. Talk about that. Now. See see
- 23:53Speaker 1: what you ain't gonna do to me, Bob, what you
- 23:54Speaker 1: ain't gonna like? So, by the way, by the way,
- 24:00Speaker 1: when I went out to l A to build my
- 24:01Speaker 1: brand web, I went to the comedy store. When I
- 24:06Speaker 1: started giving comedians an opportunity there who wasn't getting the
- 24:09Speaker 1: opportunity then as a thing, as time went by, you know,
- 24:14Speaker 1: some thing's happening over there that was not under my control.
- 24:18Speaker 1: And I was like, um, ceremoniously, um just scored it away. Racis.
- 24:27Speaker 1: But you know, God is so good. As a matter
- 24:29Speaker 1: of fact, chicken is good. God is great, Okay, And
- 24:33Speaker 1: I had an opportunity. I got a phone call from
- 24:36Speaker 1: the world famous Apollo Theater to see if I would
- 24:39Speaker 1: be interested in helping them bring the comedy, you know,
- 24:42Speaker 1: comedy back. So what we did was we um we
- 24:47Speaker 1: we actually brought in the first three non musical performers
- 24:52Speaker 1: into the Apollo Walker thing, and that would be Red Fox,
- 24:56Speaker 1: Richard Pryor in the late Greek um Jackie Mom's Maze.
- 25:01Speaker 1: And that just kicked us off into a series that
- 25:04Speaker 1: we do called The Apollo Comedy Club. And we're five
- 25:08Speaker 1: years in over there, and what I'm doing is just
- 25:11Speaker 1: what the Apollo does. Stars are born, legends are made.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I'm showcasing a lot of the next generation. There's one
- 25:19Speaker 1: guy in particular, UM named Marshall Brandon, who I honestly
- 25:23Speaker 1: believe is the next Bernie Max slash Robin Having. He
- 25:27Speaker 1: captivates audiences like that, but nobody really knows who he
- 25:31Speaker 1: is yet. But you and I we're gonna talk. Hey, Bob,
- 25:39Speaker 1: look at just a twenty Roshan and Bob, this is
- 25:45Speaker 1: what I've been doing all my life. This is what
- 25:46Speaker 1: you've been doing all your life. We just have not
- 25:48Speaker 1: produced anything together, but understand that will change in twenty
- 25:53Speaker 1: Bob something, the incredible talent, Scole, the incredible producer. Just
- 25:57Speaker 1: just google his name. Is you any r first name Bo,
