- 1:15Speaker 1: Bobby cart Right, Julia, how you doing, Bobby A. Rashan,
- 1:19Speaker 1: Thanks for having me, Thanks for being platient with my
- 1:22Speaker 1: technical simy to get on your today. I will spreading
- 1:25Speaker 1: the word of the Lord. I got to be a
- 1:27Speaker 1: singing the word of the Lord, a praise of the
- 1:29Speaker 1: Word of the Lord. I have to be patient tell
- 1:32Speaker 1: us about this upcoming event. But before we go there,
- 1:35Speaker 1: I apologize. Talk about the history of those of these
- 1:38Speaker 1: superfest events that you've been putting together for years. Well, well,
- 1:43Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety eight, I got a vision from the
- 1:48Speaker 1: Lord in my sleep and the Lord showed me Gospel
- 1:51Speaker 1: Superfessuh in a vision, and I was like, oh, Lord,
- 1:55Speaker 1: this is too much work, and I could not sleep
- 1:59Speaker 1: for days. I kept telling my wife the Lord's giving
- 2:01Speaker 1: me something big. He's giving me something big, and she said, Okay,
- 2:04Speaker 1: it's big. Just let me go to sleep please, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 1: I said, no, you don't understand, honey, this is going
- 2:09Speaker 1: to be big. And she said okay. And so I
- 2:12Speaker 1: couldn't sleep until I started planning the first one. It
- 2:16Speaker 1: was like a burning And so the Lord gave me
- 2:20Speaker 1: the day. They gave me June ninth, tenth and eleven,
- 2:22Speaker 1: the year two thousand. That was the year when the
- 2:25Speaker 1: computers were going to crash, the Chinese were going to
- 2:28Speaker 1: attack Y two K. We didn't know what was going on.
- 2:30Speaker 1: We had never seen two zero zero anything. It was
- 2:34Speaker 1: nineteen always nineteen something. And so I decided this was
- 2:38Speaker 1: going to be the granddaddy of them all three day
- 2:41Speaker 1: festival in Louisville, Kentucky, and we invited thirty something acts
- 2:46Speaker 1: to come, and to my surprise, they all came. And
- 2:50Speaker 1: I mean, we had the Who's Who's the Gospel back
- 2:52Speaker 1: there twenty three years ago, and we did the first
- 2:57Speaker 1: one and we almost lost our shirts since you in
- 3:00Speaker 1: the first one. And then we did the second, when
- 3:03Speaker 1: then we did the third, when then we did the fourth,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and they kept going. And now we've just finished the
- 3:07Speaker 1: twentieth Gospel Superfest and through that time period, we've been
- 3:13Speaker 1: syndicated for twenty three consecutive years on domestic syndication, reaching
- 3:17Speaker 1: eighty percent of the country with five one hour specials
- 3:22Speaker 1: a quarter, actually five one hour specials a year. And
- 3:25Speaker 1: on top of that, I was telling a gentleman the
- 3:28Speaker 1: other day, a gospel superfest has played on every major
- 3:32Speaker 1: black cable network in the United States, from b ET,
- 3:35Speaker 1: the TV One to Bounce to Aspire to the Byron
- 3:40Speaker 1: Allen's Agrio. In some form of fashion, we've delivered content
- 3:44Speaker 1: to all of those black networks while simultaneously being in
- 3:48Speaker 1: domestic syndication on ABC, NBC, and Fox affiliates around the country.
- 3:53Speaker 1: But all of that comes as we were novices and
- 3:57Speaker 1: just obeying, you know, the word of the Lord of
- 3:59Speaker 1: Being what he told us to do, and we just,
- 4:02Speaker 1: you know, year after year after year, compiled knowledge and
- 4:06Speaker 1: year after year after year created relationships and now this
- 4:11Speaker 1: particular year we've been picked up by b ET. So
- 4:15Speaker 1: it's just a miracle really well, you know, it's a
- 4:18Speaker 1: consistency because alone that ride how we met was when
- 4:21Speaker 1: Steve Harvey and I were doing the BT Celebration of Gospel.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Because that time, right after you started in two thousand
- 4:28Speaker 1: and we did it for thirteen straight years and gets
- 4:31Speaker 1: what you still doing it. So I commend you because
- 4:34Speaker 1: the journey is about effort. A journey is about consistency.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Now unity media, Which came first? Did the did the
- 4:41Speaker 1: Gospel Superfest come first? Or did your production company started
- 4:45Speaker 1: by you and your wife come first? Well, the production
- 4:48Speaker 1: company come first. I'm glad that you asked that, because
- 4:51Speaker 1: that's an interesting story. I was a station manager of
- 4:56Speaker 1: a for AM radio station and then Cincinnati. I was
- 5:01Speaker 1: the morning morning drift host to the janitor or the
- 5:04Speaker 1: pd with it. When you got a little small daytimes
- 5:08Speaker 1: day what you call the daytime, or where you can
- 5:09Speaker 1: hear it in the day, you better can hear it
- 5:10Speaker 1: in the night when the signal goes down. I was
- 5:13Speaker 1: running a radio station in Cincinnati in the late nineties
- 5:17Speaker 1: and so the manager of the owner, he wanted to
- 5:21Speaker 1: get out of it, he wanted to sell, and he
- 5:22Speaker 1: offered it to me, and I was like, oh, this
- 5:25Speaker 1: is too much work. I said that same thing again,
- 5:29Speaker 1: AM station. I knew every pastor's cars, Mercedes, I got
- 5:33Speaker 1: my business cards. What I'm trying to get him fifteen
- 5:35Speaker 1: minutes of airtime selling, you know, AM Christian Radio, And
- 5:39Speaker 1: I said, oh, you know, I want to get out
- 5:40Speaker 1: of this. So I went home and I told my
- 5:43Speaker 1: wife that John had offered me the station and I
- 5:47Speaker 1: told him no, and she said, why did you tell
- 5:50Speaker 1: him no? Go back and tell him we wanted. Well,
- 5:52Speaker 1: she don't do no work at the state. I'm doing
- 5:54Speaker 1: all the work. And so I went back to John
- 5:58Speaker 1: and I told him, I said, okay, you know I
- 6:00Speaker 1: talked to my wife. We want to try to give
- 6:01Speaker 1: it a shot. Well, before we formed a company, Unity Media,
- 6:06Speaker 1: we got an investor gave us a few things, you know,
- 6:08Speaker 1: a few thousand dollars whatever, and we got to the
- 6:11Speaker 1: point where we were getting ready to get the radio
- 6:13Speaker 1: station and we got out bid. So somebody that was
- 6:17Speaker 1: you know, I don't want to get too in the
- 6:19Speaker 1: weeds with someone who was under me at the station
- 6:21Speaker 1: that I was their manager, ended up putting a group
- 6:23Speaker 1: together and they outbid me. They got the station. So
- 6:27Speaker 1: so I went back to my investors and I said, well,
- 6:31Speaker 1: I gotta give you guys your money back because we
- 6:33Speaker 1: didn't we lost the station. They said, no, no, no,
- 6:36Speaker 1: we weren't investing in the station. We were investing in you.
- 6:40Speaker 1: So you figure it out. But we don't. We don't
- 6:42Speaker 1: want our money back. And so then so we started consulting.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So at that point we started, you know, picking up
- 6:50Speaker 1: clients is just telling them how to run their stations.
- 6:53Speaker 1: You know what consultants do. We supposedly know it all.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And so so I changed it into a consultant firm
- 7:00Speaker 1: and start consulting low power TV stations and a run
- 7:05Speaker 1: across the station that was a black owned WB affiliate.
- 7:08Speaker 1: You didn't remember Able the Frog and all of that,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and these business guys bought this station but didn't know
- 7:15Speaker 1: how to run it. So I basically talked my way
- 7:18Speaker 1: into a job. I said, look, I've been doing radio.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I said, there's really no difference when one spot's got
- 7:23Speaker 1: pictures in one spot doesn't have pictures. I believe I
- 7:26Speaker 1: can handle this for you. So I came in as
- 7:29Speaker 1: a consultant slash general manager of a low power TV
- 7:32Speaker 1: station that had cable carriage. And that was my first
- 7:36Speaker 1: step into television. So as I was the general manager
- 7:41Speaker 1: and all of that people were the syndicators like Don
- 7:44Speaker 1: Cornelius and Byron Allen and all of those folks were
- 7:48Speaker 1: trying to get our markets. So they would come to
- 7:50Speaker 1: me to get Dayton, Ohio just Market fifty three at
- 7:53Speaker 1: the time, and I would have to sign off on
- 7:56Speaker 1: their contracts. So I was like, okay, I tell my secretary,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I'll signed that contract, but make another copy of it
- 8:03Speaker 1: and put it on my desk and I'll look at
- 8:04Speaker 1: it later. So I started studying all of the syndicators
- 8:08Speaker 1: and what they were doing and how they were syndicating
- 8:10Speaker 1: their shows, and basically, to be completely honest with you,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I duplicated that and then I took Gospel Superfast and
- 8:19Speaker 1: modeled it after Soul Train. So if you remember, Soul
- 8:23Speaker 1: Train was Soul Trained Awards, Soul Trained Weekly, Soul Trained Quick,
- 8:28Speaker 1: Christmas Star, Soul Trained, Lady of Soul. You had Soul
- 8:32Speaker 1: Trained as the umbrella title, and you had all of
- 8:35Speaker 1: these subtitle shows that Don Cornelius and his genius had put,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you know, put out in the marketplace. And so I said,
- 8:42Speaker 1: this is a great idea. So we did Gospel Superfess,
- 8:46Speaker 1: Holiday Gospel Superfess, Easter Jam Gospel Superfess, Black History Month Gospel.
- 8:51Speaker 1: So it was really basically the second the Soul Train
- 8:54Speaker 1: model flipped for Jesus. So that's how and that's how
- 9:00Speaker 1: I syndicated a lot of people compared me with other
- 9:02Speaker 1: gospel shows. But to be completely transparent, I just really
- 9:07Speaker 1: co tell Don Cornelius and change the gospel, changed Soul
- 9:10Speaker 1: Training to Gospel Superfess and put subtitles under it, and
- 9:13Speaker 1: that's how we syndicated the Gospel Superfessor. Congratulations and congratulations
- 9:18Speaker 1: for having a wife who every time you said something,
- 9:22Speaker 1: Jeez went back to sleep or tell you to go
- 9:24Speaker 1: go do it. And both of y'all because we were
- 9:27Speaker 1: indicated on over twenty HBCU stations, and both of you
- 9:31Speaker 1: guys at HBCU grads correct. We went to HBC's I
- 9:35Speaker 1: got my I dropped out after two years. She got
- 9:39Speaker 1: her degree from Howard. But we met at Kentucky State
- 9:43Speaker 1: and so and that's another thread. But I left Kentucky
- 9:47Speaker 1: State after my sophomore year. My schoolmates and classmates were
- 9:52Speaker 1: all of the members of Midnight Stars and remember Midnight
- 9:55Speaker 1: Star Wars from them on the campus of Kentucky State University.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Were all friends to this day. We were all studying together.
- 10:03Speaker 1: My wife was in biology, so she wanted to move on,
- 10:05Speaker 1: so she moved over to Howard her junior year and
- 10:10Speaker 1: finished at Howard. I didn't finish. Then I went on
- 10:13Speaker 1: the road with the Ohio Players and M two May
- 10:15Speaker 1: and Heat Waving a whole bunch of R and B
- 10:16Speaker 1: groups because all I really wanted before I was saved
- 10:22Speaker 1: our players, did you used to have to send my
- 10:24Speaker 1: new women on an album Government in two Come On Night.
- 10:28Speaker 1: When I was twenty one years old, I joined the
- 10:31Speaker 1: Ohio Players as a stage technician. So a friend of
- 10:36Speaker 1: mine was getting a job. The High Players had lost
- 10:39Speaker 1: most of their road crew. I don't know why they did.
- 10:43Speaker 1: People said, well, they weren't getting paid. They was upset.
- 10:45Speaker 1: So all of their really strong tech people went with
- 10:47Speaker 1: the Commodores and the Ohier Players didn't have any road crew.
- 10:51Speaker 1: So a friend of mine named Kenny Thomas, who's deceased now.
- 10:54Speaker 1: He kept coming over my house so, hey, man, we're
- 10:56Speaker 1: going out in two weeks. You ought to come with us. Man,
- 10:58Speaker 1: we're going out, and you're gonna going And I was like,
- 11:00Speaker 1: oh man, I'm trying to start my own group. I
- 11:03Speaker 1: don't know. So he come around the next week, Man,
- 11:05Speaker 1: we down to three people. We need three more people.
- 11:07Speaker 1: And I said, my band started not making rehearsals. The
- 11:11Speaker 1: singers was like, find babysitters and stuff like this, like, oh,
- 11:14Speaker 1: this band ain't going nowhere, you know. So he came
- 11:17Speaker 1: around again. He said, like, I got one position left.
- 11:20Speaker 1: It's the violet position. You'll handle all the clothes and wardrobe.
- 11:24Speaker 1: You need to come on and go out with us.
- 11:26Speaker 1: So I looked at what the band was doing. The
- 11:29Speaker 1: band was doing nothing, and so I disbanded the band
- 11:32Speaker 1: and jumped on the hard player's crew and when I
- 11:35Speaker 1: was twenty one years old, congratulate and went out went
- 11:38Speaker 1: out with him for three years. What a great story.
- 11:40Speaker 1: We're talking to Bobby Cartwright Junior. He's the executive producer
- 11:44Speaker 1: and the founder of the Gospel Superfest. As he said,
- 11:48Speaker 1: he just used his brain. He looked at what Dawn
- 11:50Speaker 1: Conegius was doing and just did his own version. Instead
- 11:54Speaker 1: of the R and B spin, it was a gospel spin.
- 11:56Speaker 1: The Gospel super Fess Easter Jam will air on BT
- 12:00Speaker 1: April night, five pm Eastern Standard Time. Please don't go anywhere,
- 12:04Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more Money Making Conversations masterclass.
- 12:10Speaker 1: You are now tuned into the Money Making Conversations Minute
- 12:13Speaker 1: of Inspiration with Rashaan McDonald. I'm always searching for books
- 12:17Speaker 1: that will benefit entrepreneurs. Or Build your Vision from the
- 12:20Speaker 1: ground Up by Bishop td Jake's is a book that
- 12:23Speaker 1: aims to educate and empower readers or how to transform
- 12:26Speaker 1: their vision into a reality. Everything starts with the vision.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Expanding your vision, going to new horizons, always being progressive,
- 12:34Speaker 1: not being so busy doing the work that you don't
- 12:36Speaker 1: get to think the work you do. Most entrepreneurs the
- 12:39Speaker 1: same thing that make them greatest killing them. They're so
- 12:42Speaker 1: busy doing the work that they don't get a chance
- 12:44Speaker 1: to think the work. And they cannot confuse busyness with business.
- 12:49Speaker 1: You have to build your own wings. I use again
- 12:52Speaker 1: the metaphor of the Right brothers, and it took them
- 12:54Speaker 1: forever to get in the plane in the air, but
- 12:56Speaker 1: they had to build their own wings in order to
- 12:59Speaker 1: get it done. Are gonna have him through magic? It
- 13:01Speaker 1: is a building the process. If you want to hear
- 13:04Speaker 1: this full interview with Bishop td Jakes, visit Moneymaking Conversation
- 13:08Speaker 1: dot com. I'm your host with Sean McDonald. I'm speaking
- 13:10Speaker 1: to Bobby Cartwright Junior. As he said earlier prior to
- 13:14Speaker 1: our break, Unity Media, a Christian based firm owned by
- 13:18Speaker 1: her husband and wife. Bobby and reneed a cart Right.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Everything starts with a dream, Everything starts with the idea
- 13:24Speaker 1: we all have these opportunities. What do we do with
- 13:27Speaker 1: these opportunities. He saw an opportunity presented to him to
- 13:31Speaker 1: do a radio station. He didn't think he was capable
- 13:34Speaker 1: of doing that. He didn't think he wanted to do
- 13:35Speaker 1: the work. His wife looked at him, she knew she
- 13:38Speaker 1: married to she knew what he could do. Pushed him
- 13:40Speaker 1: right back out that door. And when she pushed him
- 13:42Speaker 1: right back out that door, he realized the dream was
- 13:45Speaker 1: superseded by somebody else. And then he found out it
- 13:48Speaker 1: wasn't about the station. It was about him. And there's
- 13:51Speaker 1: so many of us out there in the streets today
- 13:54Speaker 1: don't understand our own personal value. And if you don't
- 13:57Speaker 1: understand your personal value, then you will never have significant growth.
- 14:00Speaker 1: That's what money Making Conversations Master Class is all about.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Bringing people like Bobby Cartwright Junior on the show. Let
- 14:06Speaker 1: you know, if you see it, you can do it.
- 14:08Speaker 1: But you better be consistent, you better realize the amount
- 14:11Speaker 1: of effort you got to put into it. And more importantly,
- 14:14Speaker 1: you gotta surround yourself by someone or some people who
- 14:18Speaker 1: believe in you. In your case, Bobby, it gotta be
- 14:22Speaker 1: your wife. We needa talk of talk to us about it.
- 14:25Speaker 1: It is. It definitely is her. I mean she is
- 14:27Speaker 1: the perfect temperament for this because there's a lot of
- 14:31Speaker 1: things that you know. I went very very fast with
- 14:33Speaker 1: this interview. But around the second Gospel super Fast, actually
- 14:37Speaker 1: the first Gospel super Fast, the people kept telling me
- 14:41Speaker 1: because the tickets were so slow, and you know how
- 14:42Speaker 1: Black concerts are, wait, wait till the last minute, and
- 14:45Speaker 1: so there's three day event and tickets were slow, and
- 14:48Speaker 1: the people kept coming up to me, aren't you going
- 14:51Speaker 1: to council? Aren't you going to cancel? I'm like, no, no,
- 14:54Speaker 1: the Lord told me not to do that, and the
- 14:57Speaker 1: Lord told me to do this. I'm not canceling Rashawn
- 15:01Speaker 1: Monday morning, those folks were wrapped around that at lunchtime
- 15:05Speaker 1: where we were wrapped around that Colgey and buying these
- 15:08Speaker 1: last minute tickets on Monday morning. The week of the
- 15:10Speaker 1: show I had. The show was in June. I had
- 15:14Speaker 1: been up on the air since February trying to push
- 15:17Speaker 1: this concert and they didn't respond until a week before.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And that week I said, Lord, I don't know if
- 15:26Speaker 1: I have promoted stomach or not, because this is just ridiculous.
- 15:29Speaker 1: But there was the last minute and I held faith.
- 15:32Speaker 1: And we had a sponsor that year, and I can
- 15:35Speaker 1: say it was Kmart and you know Kmar was in
- 15:37Speaker 1: for a nice bundle. And the week of the show,
- 15:42Speaker 1: Camar got into bankruptcy trouble or something was going on
- 15:45Speaker 1: and they pulled out. So so on Monday morning, I
- 15:48Speaker 1: had no sponsor, no major sponsor. That the tickets looked funny,
- 15:53Speaker 1: but the lord said, this is what I want you
- 15:55Speaker 1: to do. So you know, we kept. We kept we
- 15:59Speaker 1: were supposed to do. We did it, and we were
- 16:01Speaker 1: about eight graand short. And so I went to a
- 16:05Speaker 1: banker and I took a second mortgage job of my
- 16:08Speaker 1: house because I'm a man of integrity. If I say you,
- 16:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna pay you. I'm gonna pay't hook a cook
- 16:13Speaker 1: who I shouldn't say it like that, but I'm gonna
- 16:14Speaker 1: pay you. So I went and got I took a
- 16:17Speaker 1: second mortgage job of my house, and I've rung the
- 16:20Speaker 1: paper some to my wife and I said, honey, I
- 16:22Speaker 1: need you to sign right here. You see what the
- 16:24Speaker 1: yellow sticker is. And he just said right here, and
- 16:26Speaker 1: he just said right here. She said, what is it?
- 16:28Speaker 1: Don't worry about it either. She said, well what I said,
- 16:30Speaker 1: it's a second mortage. I need to pay the lighting department.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Just sign right here. She's like, bhlah boy. So every
- 16:35Speaker 1: time I made my house payment, I was like, I'm
- 16:37Speaker 1: paying for Gospel Superfest. And it was just twenty something
- 16:40Speaker 1: years ago. But that's the kind of wife I have.
- 16:43Speaker 1: It's like she is in all in, you know. And
- 16:46Speaker 1: so we second mortgaged our house, paid the lighting department off,
- 16:50Speaker 1: kept our integrity, went on to the next year, and
- 16:52Speaker 1: then we started making money. Paulay off year three or four.
- 16:55Speaker 1: We didn't make any money in the first two or
- 16:57Speaker 1: three years. It was you know, that's just the way
- 17:00Speaker 1: some of these projects go. You have to end his
- 17:02Speaker 1: ass and you have to believe in what you're doing. Well,
- 17:04Speaker 1: you know the inconsistency. I'm speaking to Bobby card right.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Gospel Superfest is uh, it's it's his dream, it's his
- 17:11Speaker 1: brand that he's developed over the years. Like he said,
- 17:14Speaker 1: over twenty years, he's been doing over twenty three years.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Let me be correct. The next one that's airing a
- 17:20Speaker 1: Gospel Easter jam is airing April ninth on b ET. Now,
- 17:25Speaker 1: let me talk to you about you know you have
- 17:27Speaker 1: you know, you have pop, you have pop music, you
- 17:29Speaker 1: have rap music, you have R and B music, you
- 17:31Speaker 1: have gospel. Now, there are different age groups that are
- 17:34Speaker 1: attracted to those basic basic music genres. I'm just talking
- 17:38Speaker 1: about black because I could mention rock, I could mention gospel.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I mean our country, but I'm not gonna talk about
- 17:43Speaker 1: I'm just talking about black people and these ranges of
- 17:46Speaker 1: music they do. Now, does it frustrate you when you
- 17:49Speaker 1: know that a rap artist with sale tickets like that,
- 17:52Speaker 1: or a hot R and B artist with sale tickets
- 17:55Speaker 1: like that, or crossover act like Weekend with sale tickets
- 17:59Speaker 1: like that, when you see how even today the hottest
- 18:03Speaker 1: gospel acts really don't move tickets as fast as the
- 18:06Speaker 1: hottest rap act. Correct, that is true, That's definitely true.
- 18:10Speaker 1: It's definitely an economic golf gap between the fact they
- 18:17Speaker 1: used the word second. Definitely different economic dynamic to that.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And I don't know a lot of time they expect
- 18:28Speaker 1: the gospel people to travel and pay for you know,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and and play for free, or preachers to come, but
- 18:35Speaker 1: they have expenses that too. They've got over and things
- 18:38Speaker 1: and families defeating the whole night just like anybody else does.
- 18:42Speaker 1: So I don't know why there's such a gap there.
- 18:45Speaker 1: The attractions might not be there, but some artists have
- 18:48Speaker 1: garnered larger audiences than others down through the years. Absolutely, Bobby,
- 18:55Speaker 1: let's talk about sponsors. What do you know, because what
- 18:57Speaker 1: you're talking business might a making conversations mastercally. What does
- 19:00Speaker 1: a sponsor who sponsors your events? What do they look for?
- 19:04Speaker 1: Because people are always talking to me, I can need
- 19:06Speaker 1: a sponsor for this, I need a sponsor for this.
- 19:08Speaker 1: You see what you had to build, Like you said,
- 19:10Speaker 1: your first concert, you had k Mark and they filed bankruptcy,
- 19:13Speaker 1: they went away, but you still had smaller sponsors that
- 19:16Speaker 1: what do you think it has been the magical hook
- 19:19Speaker 1: for you to get sponsors and build your dollar on
- 19:21Speaker 1: each sponsor over the years. Well, you know it's been,
- 19:25Speaker 1: you know, to be what I feel personally, it's been
- 19:29Speaker 1: an anointing that God has given me an ability to
- 19:32Speaker 1: just create something that would appeal to corporate America because
- 19:36Speaker 1: we have been we've been sponsored by Proctoring Gambles since
- 19:39Speaker 1: two thousand and two, and we've been sponsored. We did
- 19:42Speaker 1: an eight year. There's either eight years or nine year run.
- 19:45Speaker 1: And I don't know if you remember Rashan, but we
- 19:47Speaker 1: were the All State Gospel Superfass right from two thousand
- 19:51Speaker 1: and nine to two sixteen, so we did eight years
- 19:56Speaker 1: six years. What is it that I got my math
- 19:58Speaker 1: mess up? But as at least years eight years were
- 20:02Speaker 1: uh and I know exactly it was eight years because
- 20:04Speaker 1: it was the length and breadth of the Obama presidency
- 20:07Speaker 1: that we were All State Gospel Superfest. So All State
- 20:11Speaker 1: was our title sponsor. Procting Gamble has been our presenting
- 20:14Speaker 1: sponsor or in some form or fashion. And you know
- 20:18Speaker 1: African American eyeballs or African American eyeballs. And what you
- 20:21Speaker 1: have to do if you were selling a gospel show
- 20:24Speaker 1: or something like that, you have to make your case
- 20:27Speaker 1: and you have to make your case based on the
- 20:28Speaker 1: reach that you're able to provide to your client, you know,
- 20:31Speaker 1: to your potential client. It's all about numbers. It's all
- 20:34Speaker 1: about reaching demographics. Are you reaching women? Are you reaching men?
- 20:37Speaker 1: Is it eighteen to forty nine, twenty five to fifty four?
- 20:41Speaker 1: Whatever that you know that demographic that you're you're pitching.
- 20:45Speaker 1: You have to bring the numbers, and one of the
- 20:48Speaker 1: things that I did because there were other gospel shows
- 20:52Speaker 1: that preceded me in the business, and I knew I
- 20:56Speaker 1: was going into territory that the folks were already buying
- 20:59Speaker 1: those shows, and so I never sold against another show.
- 21:03Speaker 1: It was always, you know, if you can find a
- 21:06Speaker 1: little piece of the pine for us, or I thought
- 21:08Speaker 1: it was a biblical phrase, it was crumbs from the
- 21:11Speaker 1: master's table. I was like, but I would never go
- 21:14Speaker 1: in there and sell against doctor Bobby Jones or anybody
- 21:16Speaker 1: like that. I was always saying, I know you've already
- 21:18Speaker 1: been in these shows. We're just asking you if you
- 21:21Speaker 1: could find a little place for us in your budget.
- 21:24Speaker 1: And I always kept my integrity when I would get
- 21:26Speaker 1: in front of corporate American front front of clients. I
- 21:29Speaker 1: can sleep at night because I never had to cut
- 21:31Speaker 1: somebody's throat and never had to go in all underhandedly
- 21:35Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff. Our people say, all
- 21:37Speaker 1: these you know how people are. Let me just ask
- 21:40Speaker 1: you this because I got to say this, and that's
- 21:41Speaker 1: what because I respect that the integrity part. Where it
- 21:45Speaker 1: disappoints me is the fact that you know, they got
- 21:48Speaker 1: a big budget for pop. They got a big budget
- 21:50Speaker 1: for country, they got big budget for rock, and you
- 21:54Speaker 1: don't have to go in there and the crab and
- 21:55Speaker 1: the barrel type thing. When he into black entertained Black events,
- 22:01Speaker 1: you know, because that's because they just section off and
- 22:04Speaker 1: said where we're We're just gonna reach that audience. When
- 22:06Speaker 1: we know the power of the black dollar, we know
- 22:10Speaker 1: the power of the black consumer. Because we also know
- 22:12Speaker 1: that women are probably about seventy of the gospel audience.
- 22:17Speaker 1: And we also know that black women are the decision
- 22:19Speaker 1: makers and buying household and so when I look at that,
- 22:24Speaker 1: you know me, man, I get to know because I've
- 22:26Speaker 1: had to battle the same conversation you have, trying to
- 22:29Speaker 1: get sponsors, trying to convince them that these same black
- 22:33Speaker 1: people who they know by cars, by computers, you know,
- 22:36Speaker 1: by by by homes, by groceries, they have to say.
- 22:41Speaker 1: They questioned it when you when you walk in the
- 22:43Speaker 1: room and go I can put you in front of
- 22:45Speaker 1: five thousand people, I can put you in front of
- 22:47Speaker 1: ten thousand people, I can put you on the network.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Thing like that, that frustration is, do I understand you
- 22:52Speaker 1: go through? And that's why I wanted to bring you
- 22:54Speaker 1: on my show just letting people hear your story because
- 22:57Speaker 1: to get to where you've gotten what the gospels super
- 23:00Speaker 1: fast is a testament. Don't know you who you are,
- 23:04Speaker 1: but also who who your wife is as well. Well,
- 23:08Speaker 1: she's a definitely woman, a woman of integrat and she's
- 23:11Speaker 1: the prayer warrior of the household. That's for sure. Um,
- 23:14Speaker 1: people ask me, you know, how did this the holiness
- 23:17Speaker 1: woman married this colonel brother? You know, well, you know,
- 23:21Speaker 1: m Jimmy. Now you're out there with a midnight star,
- 23:24Speaker 1: You're out there with a higher player. I can only
- 23:26Speaker 1: imagine the higher player tour. That's I'll just stopped right
- 23:29Speaker 1: there because I ain't gonna miss up your ain't gonna
- 23:31Speaker 1: miss up your history. I've been I've been born a
- 23:34Speaker 1: gatting drug free since eighty seven, but before eighty seven,
- 23:40Speaker 1: you know it was, but I love it. Hey, Boba,
- 23:44Speaker 1: tell us what I know. You got another event coming
- 23:46Speaker 1: up in Jacksonville, Florida. The Gospel Superfest is coming in
- 23:50Speaker 1: September and Jacksonville, Florida. But more importantly, tell everybody why
- 23:53Speaker 1: they should watch the episode Gospel Superfest Easter Jam that's
- 23:57Speaker 1: coming up April ninth on BT
