In which the stranger known as M’sieu’ quietly establishes himself in the village, intrigues the local folk with his unusual presence and rare talents, and forms a tentative reliance on the old tailor Louis Trudel, whose faith and suspicion mingle uneasily. The day’s peace is broken by a stolen cross from the church and a shadow of accusation, while under the surface, both men wrestle with deeper struggles of belief, identity, and the harsh demands of their intertwined lives.
