- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. It's Thursday,
- 0:18June 5th, 2025. And we're coming to you from
- 0:20Snarful Solutions Group, right here in Sacramento,
- 0:23California. Good to be here. Quick look outside
- 0:25our window here in Sacramento. Beautiful day.
- 0:27Sunny, high hitting about 87 Fahrenheit. Pretty
- 0:30nice. Yeah, can't complain here. Elsewhere though,
- 0:33bit more action. Central and eastern U .S. keep
- 0:36an eye out for severe thunderstorms. They're
- 0:38moving east from the southern high plains. Where
- 0:41are they headed? Looks like the Tennessee and
- 0:43lower Ohio valleys may be stretching into the
- 0:46Carolinas by Saturday. If you're near the coast,
- 0:49North Carolina especially, tropical moisture
- 0:51means some heavy rains likely. So stay safe out
- 0:54there. Good heads up. Alright, shifting over
- 0:56to the markets. Looking back at yesterday's close,
- 0:58that was Wednesday, June 4th, the Dow Jones finished
- 1:01at 424 .27 .74. And the S &P 500 closed up at
- 1:05509 .70 .81. Okay, so here on Connecting the
- 1:08Dots, what we do, powered by Snarfle Solutions
- 1:10Group, is basically cut through the noise. Exactly.
- 1:13We use our curated info, like today we're pulling
- 1:16from our tech article report, to find the top,
- 1:18say, three tech stories of the day. And the goal
- 1:21isn't just to tell you the news, it's to connect
- 1:23it, you know, to your everyday life. How does
- 1:25this stuff actually matter to you? Right. Help
- 1:28you make sense of it all without getting lost
- 1:30in the weeds. So let's jump into our first deep
- 1:33dive. Huge news for gamers today. The Nintendo
- 1:38Switch 2. It's finally here. Launch today, June
- 1:425th. Yeah, this has been like the rumor mill
- 1:44running for years. Huge anticipation. And it's
- 1:47launching alongside a pretty major title too,
- 1:49right? Mario Kart World. The next big Mario Kart.
- 1:52So a big one -two punch from Nintendo. Okay,
- 1:55key question for anyone with an original Switch.
- 1:57What about my old games? Good news, mostly. It
- 2:01is backwards compatible with original Switch
- 2:03games. Now, the source has mentioned there might
- 2:05be, you know, a few compatibility hiccups with
- 2:07some really old or obscure stuff. But Nintendo's
- 2:10trying to help with that. Yeah, they're offering
- 2:12free software updates for some of those original
- 2:14games. The idea is just to make them play smoother,
- 2:17better, on the new Switch 2 hardware. Okay, and
- 2:19how easy is that update process? Super simple
- 2:22apparently just connect the switch to to the
- 2:25internet make sure the console system software
- 2:28is up -to -date Then start your old game if there's
- 2:31an update available. It should just prompt you
- 2:32to download it easy peasy Gotcha, so that covers
- 2:35playing your old library But they're also doing
- 2:39something new switch to additions. What's that
- 2:41about right? So these are different from the
- 2:43free compatibility updates think of a more like
- 2:48Enhanced versions or remasters built specifically
- 2:50for the Switch 2. So better graphics, maybe new
- 2:53features? Exactly. Visual improvements, maybe
- 2:55new modes, extra content, that kind of thing.
- 2:58They're available physically, you know, on a
- 3:00cartridge or digitally from the eShop. And which
- 3:03games are getting this treatment right away?
- 3:05The sources say a few big ones are ready today.
- 3:08The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild, Tears
- 3:11of the Kingdom, and also Civilization 7. Those
- 3:15Switch 2 editions are available now. Others are
- 3:18planned for later this year. Okay, so concrete
- 3:20example. Breath of the Wild Switch 2 edition.
- 3:22What's different? Reports say faster load times,
- 3:25which, you know, is huge for that game. Oh yeah.
- 3:29Plus an extra save slot, higher definition visuals,
- 3:32just overall smoother gameplay. Yeah. Tangible
- 3:35stuff you'll actually notice. Right. Now you
- 3:37mentioned free updates and these paid additions.
- 3:40How does that work if I already own, say, Breath
- 3:42of the Wild on the original Switch? Good question.
- 3:45That's where upgrade packs come in. The free
- 3:47update just ensures the original game runs OK.
- 3:50The upgrade pack is something you buy if you
- 3:51want to get all the enhancements of the Switch
- 3:532 edition without buying the whole new edition
- 3:56at full price. Okay, so it's a paid path to the
- 3:58better version if you own the old one. What kind
- 4:00of cost are we talking for these packs? Sources
- 4:02say it could be up to like $80 for some games
- 4:06generally, which sounds steep. But, Nintendo
- 4:10America's VP, Bill Trennan, specifically clarified
- 4:13that for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the
- 4:15Kingdom, the upgrade packs are just $9 .99 each.
- 4:19Okay. That's much more reasonable. Ten bucks
- 4:21is palatable. Definitely. And even better, if
- 4:24you subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online plus
- 4:26the expansion pack, those two Zelda upgrade packs
- 4:28are actually included. Free for subscribers.
- 4:31Nice perk. Alright, let's broaden out. The big
- 4:33decision for a lot of people is going to be...
- 4:35New Switch 2, or maybe grab a discounted Switch
- 4:38OLED. Yeah, because the Switch 2 is launching
- 4:40at $449 .99. The OLED was $349 .99, but you're
- 4:46seeing it drop, right? Sometimes down to like
- 4:48$299 .99 in the US, maybe even lower in the UK.
- 4:51So you could be saving $150, maybe more, by sticking
- 4:55with the OLED. What does that extra money for
- 4:57the Switch 2 get you? Let's unpack the comparison.
- 5:00OK, so physically the Switch 2 feels a bit more
- 5:02premium, according to reports. taller, smoother
- 5:05matte finish compared to the OLED's kind of cheaper
- 5:08plastic feel. And the screen, that's usually
- 5:10a big factor. It is. Switch 2 has a larger 7
- 5:13.9 inch LCD. The OLED is 7 inches. Big difference
- 5:17is resolution though. Switch 2 is full HD 1080p
- 5:20in handheld. Compared to the OLED's 720p handheld.
- 5:24Right. And docked, the Switch 2 can go up to
- 5:264K, while the OLED maxes out at 1080p. Plus,
- 5:29the Switch 2 screen can hit 120Hz refresh rate
- 5:32handheld. Smoother motion. Potentially, yeah.
- 5:35Especially in fast games. OLED is capped at 60Hz.
- 5:38Switch 2 also adds HDR10 support for better colors
- 5:41and contrast. Okay, sounds like a clear win for
- 5:43the Switch 2 display in terms of specs, but...
- 5:45But yeah, the OLED still has that OLED advantage,
- 5:48those perfect blacks, that amazing contrast.
- 5:49For some people, that visual pop is just better,
- 5:51even at lower resolution. And the other big OLED
- 5:54win, battery life. Mm -hmm. Despite a smaller
- 5:57battery size on paper, that OLED screen is just
- 5:59more efficient. You're looking at maybe 4 .5
- 6:01to 9 hours on the OLED versus 2 to 6 .5 hours
- 6:04on the Switch 2. So that's a big difference for
- 6:06portable play. Definitely. What about controls
- 6:08and connections? Switch 2 has new magnetic Joy
- 6:10-Cons, upgraded HD Rumble 2, adds mouse controls,
- 6:13which is interesting, and a game chat button.
- 6:16OLED uses the older rail system Joy -Cons. Switch
- 6:192 gets two USB -C ports. OLED has one. And storage,
- 6:22always running out of space. Big jump on Switch
- 6:242. 256 GB internal, up from 64 GB on the OLED.
- 6:29Both take microSD cards up to 2 TB, but the Switch
- 6:322 supports the newer, faster microSD express
- 6:35format. Which means faster loading from the card
- 6:38exactly those cards are pricier right now and
- 6:41the biggest factor for many performance and games.
- 6:43Yes, which two is way more powerful. We're talking
- 6:45AI upscaling ray tracing support G sync. 12 GBs
- 6:49of RAM, it means faster loads, running more demanding
- 6:52games, like Cyberpunk 2077 is apparently runnable.
- 6:55Whoa, okay. That's impressive for a handheld.
- 6:57It really is. And crucially, the Switch 2 plays
- 7:00original Switch games, plus it will get its own
- 7:03exclusive, more demanding games in the future.
- 7:05The OLED plays the current library, but won't
- 7:07get those Switch 2 exclusives. So, connecting
- 7:10this to the listener, how do you decide? It really
- 7:13boils down to priorities, doesn't it? If price
- 7:15is your main concern, you mostly play older games
- 7:17and you love that OLED screen quality and need
- 7:20the longest battery life. The OLED, especially
- 7:22discounted, is still a fantastic value. But if
- 7:25you want the best performance, the higher resolution,
- 7:28the smoother 120 Hertz option, future proofing
- 7:31for new games, faster storage, basically the
- 7:34top tier experience. The Switch 2 is where it's
- 7:36at. The sources kind of summarize it. OLED wins
- 7:38price, battery. Switch 2 wins comfort, display
- 7:41specs, controls, connections, games, future,
- 7:44performance storage. Overall winner. Switch 2,
- 7:47but OLED's the smart value pick. Makes sense.
- 7:50Okay, shifting gears completely. Let's talk privacy.
- 7:52Apple put out an updated transparency report
- 7:55yesterday. Yeah, covering the first half of 2024.
- 7:57And it shines a light on something most people
- 7:59probably don't think about much. Government requests
- 8:01for data about push notifications. Those little
- 8:04pop -up alerts on our phones? What kind of data
- 8:06are we talking about? It's mostly metadata. Basically,
- 8:10information that links a specific app notification
- 8:13to your device and your Apple ID using something
- 8:16called a push token is how Apple knows where
- 8:19to send the alert. And what can governments learn
- 8:21just from that token? According to the sources,
- 8:25things like the account holder's name, email,
- 8:28maybe even physical address tied to the Apple
- 8:30ID. Okay, that's more than I might have guessed.
- 8:33But here's the kicker, something Senator Ron
- 8:35Wyden brought attention to last year. If the
- 8:38app developer doesn't encrypt the content of
- 8:40the notification itself before it goes through
- 8:42Apple's system, then the actual message text
- 8:44could be included too. Potentially, yes. Even
- 8:47if the app uses end -to -end encryption for its
- 8:50main messages, if the notification preview isn't
- 8:52also encrypted by default, that snippet could
- 8:55be exposed in the data provided to governments.
- 8:57Apple just delivers it. They don't decrypt it.
- 8:59Wow. Okay, so what are the trends? Are governments
- 9:01asking for this more? Globally, yes. Requests
- 9:04for push token data nearly doubled from H1 -2023
- 9:07to H1 -2024, went from 158 up to 277. But is
- 9:12Apple handing it over more? Actually, no. Their
- 9:14approval rate dropped globally, from 77 % down
- 9:18to 59%. Interesting. What about here in the U
- 9:20.S.? The U .S. trend is even more dramatic. U
- 9:23.S. requests surged more than doubled from 48
- 9:25to 129 in that same period. Okay. But Apple's
- 9:28approval rate for those U .S. requests absolutely
- 9:30plummeted. from 88 % nearly 9 out of 10 down
- 9:33to just 28%. Less than 3 out of 10 approved in
- 9:36the first half of this year. That's a massive
- 9:38shift. Why the change add? Policy change at Apple.
- 9:42Since December 2023, they require a judge's order,
- 9:46not just a subpoena, to release this push notification
- 9:48data. It's a higher legal standard. Ah, that
- 9:51explains the drop in compliance, aligning with
- 9:54their privacy stance. Seems like it. Push notifications
- 9:57are tricky because they have to go through Apple's
- 9:58servers. This report is Apple's way of showing
- 10:01what's happening and that they're trying to enforce
- 10:02legal processes. Did the report mention other
- 10:05data requests? Yeah, quickly. U .S. requests
- 10:07for general device data were over 12 ,000, covering
- 10:10about 43 ,000 devices, with Apple complying 85
- 10:13% of the time. China made fewer requests but
- 10:16covered way more devices, over 365 ,000, and
- 10:19Apple complied 95 % of the time there. And what
- 10:21about those geofence warrants? They've pretty
- 10:24much vanished from Apple's U .S. report. Went
- 10:26from 16 requests in H1... 2023 down to just one
- 10:31in H1 2024. And Apple never complied with any
- 10:34of them anyway. Speculation is investigators
- 10:36might be getting that kind of location data elsewhere
- 10:38now. So for the average person listening, what
- 10:41can you do about this? How does this connect
- 10:43back? Well, awareness is the first step, right?
- 10:46Knowing this metadata exists. Practical steps.
- 10:49Go into your phone's settings under notifications.
- 10:52Turn off alerts for apps you don't really need.
- 10:54Fewer notifications means fewer push tokens generated.
- 10:57OK, good tip. And for sensitive apps, like messaging
- 11:00or banking, consider changing the preview setting.
- 11:04Settings notifications show previews. Set it
- 11:06to when unlocked or never. How does that help
- 11:09with this data request issue? It stops the actual
- 11:12message content appearing on your lock screen,
- 11:15and crucially, it might prevent that content
- 11:17snippet from being included in the data if the
- 11:19app developer hasn't encrypted the notification
- 11:21itself. Just reduces your exposure a bit. Helps
- 11:24you manage that digital footprint. Got it. OK,
- 11:26third and final topic for today's deep dive.
- 11:29Another piece of hardware launched today. The
- 11:31OnePlus Pad 3. Yeah, OnePlus is making a big
- 11:34play in the high end Android tablet space with
- 11:36this one, taking aim directly at Samsung's Galaxy
- 11:39Tab S series. And looking at the specs, they
- 11:41seem to be swinging for the fences. Tell me about
- 11:43the display. It's huge. 13 .2 inch LCD. And it's
- 11:47fast 144Hz refresh rate, which should make everything
- 11:50look super smooth. High resolution too, 392 by
- 11:542400 pixels. And a slightly unusual 7 .5 aspect
- 11:58ratio, kind of taller, maybe better for reading
- 12:00or documents. Brightness. Processor, pretty bright,
- 12:03up to 900 in its peak. And it's running the Qualcomm
- 12:05Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. That's top tier flagship
- 12:08performance, so gaming heavy multitasking should
- 12:11handle it easily. What about RAM and storage
- 12:13for the US model? Good specs there too. 12GB
- 12:16of fast LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of the fastest
- 12:20UFS 4 .0 storage. So apps should load instantly.
- 12:23Battery, gotta power that big fast screen. Big
- 12:25battery, 12 ,140 mFi, supports really fast ADW
- 12:29charging and they include the charger, which
- 12:31is nice. Oh, that is nice. No wireless charging
- 12:33though. No, no wireless. And based on some comparisons,
- 12:37runtime might be in the 2 to 6 .5 hour range.
- 12:40It depends heavily on usage, obviously. That
- 12:42screen and chip can drink power. Connectivity,
- 12:45any cellular option. Latest Wi -Fi 7, Bluetooth
- 12:475 .4. But yeah, sources say Wi -Fi only. No cellular
- 12:51model mentioned for the US, which might be a
- 12:53drawback for some. Standard USB -C port. OK.
- 12:56What else stands out? Audio, cameras, design.
- 13:00They're touting the audio eight speakers, apparently.
- 13:02Four woofers, four tweeters could sound really
- 13:04good. Cameras are pretty standard. Tablet fair.
- 13:0713 MP rear, 8 MP front. Design -wise, it's very
- 13:10slim. Under six millimeter metal unibody. Comes
- 13:13at a storm blue color. Weighs about 675. Software
- 13:16and updates. That's often a concern with Android
- 13:18tablets. Looks promising here. Ships with Oxygen
- 13:21OS 15, which is based on Android 15, and OnePlus
- 13:24is committing to three major Android OS updates,
- 13:27so up to Android 18 and six years of security
- 13:29updates. That's really solid longevity. Any special
- 13:31software features? Yeah, it includes some AI
- 13:33stuff, AI writer, summarize, Google's circle
- 13:37to search, Gemini integration, and an upgraded
- 13:39multitasking system called Open Canvas designed
- 13:42for that big screen. Accessories are separate
- 13:44though, right? Mm -hmm. Keyboard with trackpad
- 13:46is $200. Folio case is $50. The Stylo 2 Pen is
- 13:51$100. So decking it out adds up. And the price
- 13:54of the tablet itself in the U .S. $699 .99 for
- 13:58that 12GB, 256GB model. Pre -order started today,
- 14:02run until July 7th. Open sales start July 8th.
- 14:04Any deals for pre -ordering? Yeah, pretty good
- 14:06ones on the OnePlus site. You get to pick two
- 14:08free accessories from the keyboard, case or stylus,
- 14:11plus a $100 trade -in bonus and a 10 % student
- 14:14discount option. Those bundles definitely soften
- 14:16the $700 price. Okay, sounds like a powerhouse,
- 14:19but is there a catch? The sources usually find
- 14:21something. There is, and it's... Kind of a big
- 14:24one, according to the reviews. No secure biometrics.
- 14:26Meaning no fingerprint scanner. Exactly. It only
- 14:29uses camera -based face unlock. And on Android,
- 14:31that's generally not secure enough for things
- 14:33like banking apps or password managers. You'll
- 14:35be typing your PIN a lot for secure stuff. Ouch.
- 14:39On a $700 flagship tablet, that feels like a
- 14:42major oversight. Yeah, the sources call it a
- 14:45crying shame. Really impacts the convenience
- 14:47for secure tasks. So connecting this back to
- 14:50the listener. Who should consider this tablet?
- 14:53It's clearly for someone who wants top -tier
- 14:55Android performance, maybe for gaming or heavy
- 14:58multitasking, and really values that huge high
- 15:01refresh rate screen for media or productivity.
- 15:04The AI features and long software support are
- 15:07pluses too. But you have to weigh that against
- 15:09the $700 price plus accessories and that really
- 15:13inconvenient lack of a fingerprint scanner for
- 15:15secure apps. Exactly. It's a trade -off. High
- 15:18power and great screen versus cost and that biometric
- 15:21security hassle. If you don't need the absolute
- 15:23latest power, the older OnePlus Pad 2 is cheaper,
- 15:26but you miss out on the Pad 3's upgrades. OK,
- 15:28so let's quickly recap the ground we covered
- 15:30in this deep dive. We started with the Nintendo
- 15:33Switch 2 launch today, comparing it head to head
- 15:35with the Switch OLED, looking at the specs, the
- 15:38price, the upgrades to help you figure out which
- 15:40console might make more sense for your gaming
- 15:41habits and budget. Then we shifted to digital
- 15:44privacy, unpacking Apple's latest transparency
- 15:47report. We focused on those government requests
- 15:50for push notification data, what that metadata
- 15:53can reveal, and importantly, how even notification
- 15:55content could potentially be exposed, plus some
- 15:59tips on managing your settings. And finally,
- 16:01we looked at the brand new OnePlus Pad 3 Android
- 16:03tablet. All those high -end specs, the huge screen,
- 16:06the fast performance, the long software support,
- 16:09but also that glaring lack of a fingerprint scanner,
- 16:12which is a key thing to consider at its $700
- 16:15price point. Right. Three different stories,
- 16:18but all connecting back to decisions you might
- 16:20make about technology, your privacy, and the
- 16:22devices you use every day. It's fascinating to
- 16:25see the power increasing in these devices, like
- 16:27the Switch 2 and Pad 3, but also the growing
- 16:30complexity around the data they generate, like
- 16:32with those push notifications. It highlights
- 16:34that ongoing tension, doesn't it, between capability,
- 16:37convenience, and security or privacy? Definitely
- 16:40something to keep thinking about. We are here
