- 0:00Hey guys, and welcome back to another episode of Aligned and
- 0:04Thriving for Teachers. Today we're diving into a topic
- 0:08that I know many of you have dealt with, and it's a hard one,
- 0:14thinking about dealing with a partner or even friends and
- 0:17family who just really don't get what it means to be a teacher or
- 0:23an educator. Now let me say this straight up.
- 0:26This is both a blessing and a curse.
- 0:29Don't get me wrong. Because on one hand, it's
- 0:31amazing to have people in your world that aren't so deep in
- 0:35teacher land 24/7 that they can help you and pull you out of
- 0:39those stress spiral situations and remind you that there's more
- 0:43to life than the marking and the planning.
- 0:46But then on the other hand, sometimes they just don't
- 0:50understand. And wow, that can get so
- 0:55frustrating. So let's be real, you've
- 0:58probably had some moments where you've come home absolutely
- 1:01wrecked mentally, emotionally, physically, and then your
- 1:06partner comes along and says something like, what's for tea?
- 1:11And my brain is just done. Or if it's close to that time of
- 1:16holidays you get, well at least you've got the holidays coming
- 1:19up. Or you get that friend that
- 1:21casually just drops in. Oh it must be so nice to finish
- 1:25at 3 mate, really. Meanwhile you're sitting back
- 1:32there thinking I've just worked a 10 hour day, I haven't peed
- 1:36since recess and I'm mentally prepping tomorrow's lesson
- 1:39already in my head and panicking about the stuff that I didn't
- 1:42get organised this afternoon before I left.
- 1:46So it's like trying to explain an alien language to someone
- 1:50who's never heard it before. And honestly, it's not even
- 1:54their fault most of the time, they just don't live it like we
- 1:58do. But here's the thing, they need
- 2:01to vent too, OK? And that's a big one.
- 2:06They have their own stuff going on, they have their own work
- 2:09stress, house stress, life stress, and just because we're
- 2:12walking around with 600 to do lists and about 100 odd tabs
- 2:16open in our head, a glue stick stuck in our hair, which also
- 2:19doesn't mean that we get to dominate the emotional space in
- 2:22the house. So how do you find that balance?
- 2:27To be honest, it's something I'm always working on.
- 2:30I'm not going to say that I'm perfect at it, you can just ask
- 2:33my family, but I try. So how do we honour our need to
- 2:37vent, our need to offload without pushing our partner, our
- 2:42friends or our family away who might just not have the capacity
- 2:47or the understanding to meet us where we are?
- 2:50So here's some things that have helped me.
- 2:53So let's break it down. Tip 1, negotiate the
- 2:57conversation space. This is something that my
- 3:00husband and I have had to learn the hard way.
- 3:02If I come in guns are blazing, listing everything that went
- 3:06wrong in my day and he's had a bad day too, we both just end up
- 3:09drained and probably argue about something that's not related to
- 3:12anything. So instead we've worked on
- 3:15negotiating literally like hey, I really just need to get this
- 3:20off my chest. Is now a good time or do I need
- 3:22to talk to you later? Do you need to go out to the
- 3:24shed and do something? And then when you come in, can I
- 3:26talk to you please? Sometimes we have code word like
- 3:31just a quick can I just brain dump for 5 minutes and then I'll
- 3:34be done. I promise.
- 3:36It makes it feel more manageable and respectful for both of us.
- 3:39And to be honest, I married a man that needs to vent to and
- 3:44he's not going to listen to this, but he knows that I'm
- 3:47talking about him and it's fine. I'm not saying anything that he
- 3:49doesn't already know or already own up to.
- 3:52Bless him. So he needs to vent too.
- 3:55So he might talk about his day. And I need to consciously make
- 3:59that effort and time in my day to focus and listen and respond,
- 4:03not just smile and nod people. I need to actually communicate
- 4:06back and function. So we negotiate that time.
- 4:09So it works both ways. It might work the same with your
- 4:13family too, or your friends. So, tip #2 and I know I've
- 4:17talked about this before, but you need to get yourself a
- 4:20teacher bestie. Or two or three or more.
- 4:23Let's be honest, there is nothing like a vent session with
- 4:26someone who actually gets it. Your teacher, Bessie, will
- 4:30understand the absurdity of you spending your lunch on duty in
- 4:3435° heat trying to stop for a group of five year olds from
- 4:37building a dig big like a dirt pile bigger than the actual
- 4:41playground because they were hot and they wanted to bury
- 4:43themselves in the dirt. I'm not speaking from experience
- 4:46at all, am I? No, never.
- 4:48We've also had them try and dig in the sand pit and dig to
- 4:50China. But hey, it happens.
- 4:52It's just a normal day in the playground.
- 4:55They understand. They've probably been there too.
- 4:58They've probably had other situations that they want to
- 5:00share. They're your sounding board.
- 5:02They can help you to decompress in a way that doesn't exhaust
- 5:06your non teaching, non teacher, family, friends, relationships
- 5:11if you know what I mean. I know that I have my teacher
- 5:14besties and I also have a teacher for a mom.
- 5:16So what better way to try and process?
- 5:21I've lost my train of thought again, talks underwater.
- 5:24I'm trying to say. So with mom and I, because we
- 5:29are both educators, we can dominate a conversation when it
- 5:33comes to the family because we're trying to vent over the
- 5:36top of the other people sharing. So we have had to work on that
- 5:39too in the family. And I think a lot of the men in
- 5:41our family have been very vocal about that and sort of named up
- 5:44when we take over the conversation because they don't
- 5:47get it. So we try and have our
- 5:49conversations around them or at other times so that we can still
- 5:52have a debrief too, because we understand each other.
- 5:55I'll tell you what though, having some of those
- 5:57conversations do and around other people, it does mean that
- 6:02they develop their understanding of education as well.
- 6:04And they might have a little bit more of respect and
- 6:07understanding for those people that are in education and have a
- 6:10bit more patience for teachers and kids when they know what
- 6:13you're going through. So again, it's a balance.
- 6:17My third tip for you, let them support you in their way.
- 6:21Oh, now this is a big one for me.
- 6:24Just because they don't understand what happened in that
- 6:27staff meeting does not mean that they're not going to be helpful.
- 6:32This is a short list of things that non teacher spouses and
- 6:36friends can actually be amazing at.
- 6:38And yeah, probably speaking a little bit from experience here,
- 6:42but they can be amazing at getting you off your laptop at
- 6:459:00 PM when you're about to start that next unit plan.
- 6:49They can be amazing at encouraging fun, restful times
- 6:54or even encouraging you to do yourself care.
- 6:57Like, do you need a minute? Do you need to go for a walk on
- 7:00the beach, babe? Yep, Thank you, darling.
- 7:04Those little moments, they can be great at offering an outside
- 7:08a neutral perspective or other perspectives, you know what I
- 7:12mean? On school dramas, obviously when
- 7:16you have those conversations, you're aiming to be respectful
- 7:19of those people and not naming people up.
- 7:20You can talk in theoretics, and I do that a lot.
- 7:23I talk in theoretic, like theoretically, if someone did
- 7:26this and they did this in your workplace, what would you do?
- 7:30And we sort of map it out that way.
- 7:33They may also be really good at helping with preparing resources
- 7:36like laminating. Yep.
- 7:38Again, naming up my husband for this one.
- 7:40He's really good at laminating. He's way better than me, mainly
- 7:44because I argue with the machine and it hates me and it eats
- 7:47everything that I put through it.
- 7:49So he eventually just takes over because he gets frustrated and
- 7:53he does an amazing job. Again, Don't probably don't tell
- 7:56him I told you that. That's just between us podcast
- 7:58people. Yeah.
- 8:01They also might be really good at reminding you of who you are
- 8:06outside of being a teacher because I've talked about that
- 8:09with you guys before, that you're not just a teacher, you
- 8:12are a human being 1st and people who aren't in the teaching or
- 8:16education sort of side of things, they can remind you that
- 8:19you are a human outside of your work.
- 8:21They can also be good at booking something fun in the holidays so
- 8:24you don't just work yourself out the whole time.
- 8:27And again, go back to my self care episode about self care in
- 8:30the holidays because remember, you need to map out your time.
- 8:33So set some boundaries you. They might also be really good
- 8:38at reminding you not to take it all too seriously because
- 8:43sometimes we do get very obsessed with taking things on
- 8:47and we get very serious about those things.
- 8:49They might also be good at holding space for you.
- 8:52Even if they don't fully understand what's going on, they
- 8:56will take that time to listen and let you vent.
- 9:00They might also not listen to this podcast so you can lovingly
- 9:05roast them. Kidding, kind of.
- 9:09Honestly, my husband will probably hate that I'm saying
- 9:12all of these things because he is one of my number one people
- 9:15to vent to. But lucky for me, he doesn't
- 9:17listen to this. And lucky for him, I actually
- 9:20mean every word. So he's learned a lot over the
- 9:22years about what I need and how to live with a teacher.
- 9:26And that includes giving me time to decompress in the holidays
- 9:29and not asking me to do 5 jobs the moment that I clock off for
- 9:33the term. Because like, life admin, hi.
- 9:36Oh, can you go into town and do this now because you're not at
- 9:38work and can you go pick this up?
- 9:40No, no, we negotiate these things and we work together
- 9:43because we're A-Team and we know what each other needs.
- 9:47And your friends, your family, they will all be the same.
- 9:51So if you don't have a partner, I'm talking about your family
- 9:54and your friends too, because they are the ones sharing space
- 9:56with you and they'll be the ones that are supporting you.
- 9:59Tip #4 How to deal with those comments?
- 10:04You know the ones. Here's what I want you to
- 10:07remember when a friend or family member makes one of those
- 10:11comments. OK, so these ones, you get so
- 10:15many holidays. It must be so nice to finish
- 10:19early all week. Why are you doing work on the
- 10:22weekend? You don't get paid for that.
- 10:26Wow. I would be a multi millionaire.
- 10:31In fact, I could probably say I'd be a billionaire of all the
- 10:33comments that I have had in regards to my teaching and
- 10:37teacher life and how good my job is.
- 10:40I mean, Yep, I'm going to own it.
- 10:42Yes, I get holidays because I deserve them.
- 10:44We deserve them people. And yes, sometimes I do have to
- 10:48work on the weekend. And when you're like me and have
- 10:51been a relief coordinator before, sometimes you work a lot
- 10:54of outside of work hours. And no, you may not get paid
- 10:58what you deserve for that time, but again, you are doing it to
- 11:02support your team. So we'd be very wealthy if we
- 11:05got paid. In all those comments, I have to
- 11:07say. But here's how you can respond
- 11:10without snapping even though you might want to.
- 11:13And if it is a sibling like I have, you may want to hurt them
- 11:17and inflict pain, but you don't because you love them.
- 11:20Sorry. So #1 keep it light.
- 11:25So your response might be, oh, you know, all that holiday time
- 11:28is for me to recover from the 60 hour weeks I've been doing.
- 11:31Remember report writing? Yeah, this is my recovery time
- 11:35from that. Number two, it might be to share
- 11:38your why I do it because I love making a difference and the
- 11:41holidays help me balance everything else out and they
- 11:45balance with rest #3 set some boundaries.
- 11:50The next episode I come out with, oh sorry, the previous one
- 11:54I did was talking about saying no and setting boundaries.
- 11:57So this is about that too. So #3 setting boundaries.
- 12:01Hey, I know it seems like I work a lot of hours, but it's just
- 12:04part of the job. It helps me show up for the kids
- 12:06and it helps me to feel like I'm organised and ready for the
- 12:09week. But you can make it shorter than
- 12:11that because really, you don't need to justify what you're
- 12:13doing. You just do what's working for
- 12:15you. As long as you are still
- 12:17protecting your boundaries #4 is just to laugh it off.
- 12:21I'll swap you a week in my classroom and then we'll compare
- 12:24notes or hey, hey, you can come and take my job.
- 12:27I'd love for you to come and have a go and then tell me what
- 12:30it's like. Because remember, they don't
- 12:32have to get it. They really don't.
- 12:34I mean, look at some of the politicians out there.
- 12:37And I know I shouldn't really be saying it at this time of the
- 12:39year, but look at them. They definitely don't get it.
- 12:42Can you imagine some of them coming in and trying to manage a
- 12:46classroom for a day? Good luck with implementing your
- 12:49new so called brilliant education strategy.
- 12:52When you've got 22 kids and one's crying and one's missing
- 12:55out on something else and their friends, what with this one and
- 12:57there's glitter on the floor and you don't know where that glue
- 12:59came from that's sitting over there and why is that child
- 13:01doing that and why is this one now crying?
- 13:04How are you going to do that and balance everything else?
- 13:08So there's that whole process too.
- 13:12So you don't have to justify all the wonderful holidays that you
- 13:15get because you deserve them. And don't ever forget that.
- 13:19You don't have to start an argument with people just
- 13:23because they make a comment. I've learned that over the
- 13:26years. Please don't take it to heart.
- 13:28You've got to learn that and just move past it.
- 13:33So the big reminder that I want you to take away today.
- 13:38So to focus on, you don't need everyone to understand your job,
- 13:45OK? Your family doesn't need to get
- 13:48it. Your spouse doesn't need to get
- 13:50it. You just need to understand the
- 13:52why and why you do it. Understand your why.
- 13:57Remember your why because this is who you are.
- 14:02You are passionate. You want to change lives.
- 14:05You want to make a school a safe place and a joyful place for the
- 14:10kids that are in your care. Sometimes you see them more than
- 14:13their parents see them throughout the day.
- 14:15But it doesn't have to always make sense to the outside world.
- 14:18Because Yep, in education, sometimes we are in a little
- 14:20bubble, a little world of our own.
- 14:22But it has to make sense to you. And hey, if the holidays are
- 14:27what help you to recover and rest, take every second of it.
- 14:31And do not feel guilty. Because those holidays, they are
- 14:36not a luxury. They are your compensation for
- 14:39the massive emotional and physical load you have to carry
- 14:43all year long. So the next time someone's going
- 14:48to throw a comment your way, just pause, smile and remember
- 14:52your why. Then go text your teacher bestie
- 14:55and let it all out with them. Have your little event session.
- 15:00Thanks for being here with me today.
- 15:02And don't forget to hit that follow button so you get

- 15:14Sorry, it's on Teacherspayteachers, but if you
- 15:16search Aligned and Thriving for Teachers, you'll find it on
- 15:18there. You can DM me on Instagram.
- 15:21The handle will be down in there as well.
- 15:24You know that I've got your back.
- 15:25You've all got this and you are not alone.
- 15:28I mean, if you could hear through this episode and now
- 15:30you're going to go back and listen really carefully that my
- 15:32beautiful dog who loves to star in these things because yes,
- 15:35this is real life and I'm only so good at editing things out.
- 15:39But you will hear my beautiful girl barking in the background
- 15:42because she's barking at her own reflection.
- 15:44So she's venting to herself. So if you can hear her through
- 15:48the episode, I am so sorry, but I can't get rid of that lovely
- 15:52background noise, as much as I'd love to work that out.
- 15:55But yeah, just remember that you've got this, you're not
- 15:58alone, and I will talk to you again soon.
- 16:01Bye, guys.
