- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning and welcome back to Connecting
- 0:17the Dots. I'm Alex, ready to help you navigate
- 0:20the chaos of the technology world. And I'm Morgan,
- 0:23here to provide the context. Happy Wednesday
- 0:25and happy December 24th, 2025. Right. A time
- 0:30of year when things usually slow down, but not
- 0:34in tech. It feels like everything is hitting
- 0:36the accelerator. It really does. We have a lot
- 0:38to get through today. We do. But first, let's
- 0:41get grounded, especially for our listeners here
- 0:44in Sacramento and right across California. We
- 0:46have to talk about this weather. Yeah, you can't
- 0:48ignore it. It's a major system. What meteorologists
- 0:51call an atmospheric river is just, well. slamming
- 0:55the west coast. Which is basically a giant fire
- 0:57hose of moisture from the Pacific. That's a great
- 1:00way to put it. Yeah. And it is dumping a ton
- 1:02of rain. So the LA basin is getting hit the hardest
- 1:04right now. Exactly. We're seeing some pretty
- 1:08serious concerns for flash flooding, urban flooding
- 1:11all across Southern California today. So if you're
- 1:14down there, you should be really careful on the
- 1:16roads. And if you were thinking of a holiday
- 1:17trip over the Sierra Nevada mountains, maybe
- 1:20don't. Yeah, I would genuinely reconsider this
- 1:24year is getting feet of snow, not inches and
- 1:26some really high winds. Those mountain passes
- 1:28are going to be incredibly difficult, if not
- 1:30just impossible. So check Caltrans before you
- 1:32even think about it. You do. OK, so from. messy
- 1:37weather to some much calmer money markets. It
- 1:40looks like that positive momentum is holding
- 1:42strong to close out the year. It is. The rally
- 1:45is continuing. The Dow Jones closed yesterday
- 1:47at 48 ,558 .84. That's a solid daily gain of
- 1:520 .28%. A very solid gain. And the broader market,
- 1:56the S &P 500, followed right along. It closed
- 1:58up 0 .14 % at 6 ,914 .78. So traditional markets
- 2:03feel pretty robust. They do. The only real volatility,
- 2:06and this is pretty common lately, is in crypto.
- 2:08Bitcoin saw a little dip. Just a little one.
- 2:10Yeah, down about 0 .70%, closing at 86 ,821 .22.
- 2:15But, you know, overall, it's a remarkably positive
- 2:17picture heading into the holidays. A strong note
- 2:19to end on. Now, before we get into the Morningstar
- 2:21report, we want to thank our sponsor, Old Glory.
- 2:23You know, if you're doing any last -minute holiday
- 2:25shopping and you have that... that one techie
- 2:28friend who's impossible to buy for, Old Glory
- 2:30is your place. It's an iconic music and sports
- 2:33fan merch store. They seriously have something
- 2:35for everyone. And they're offering a great deal
- 2:38for our listeners. If you use the promo code
- 2:40SNARFUL, that's S -N -A -R -F -U -L, you'll get
- 2:4415 % off your entire purchase. You can check
- 2:46out their huge selection at OldGlory .com. All
- 2:51right, let's jump in. We're looking at the three
- 2:53biggest tech stories of the morning, and we're
- 2:55covering everything from, well, AI becoming your
- 2:58App Store, to a new space race happening right
- 3:01above our heads. Let's start with that first
- 3:03one. A huge announcement from OpenAI's Dev Day
- 3:052025. The chat window is no longer just for chatting.
- 3:09It's basically an App Store now. It's a total
- 3:11foundational shift. I mean, for years, chat GPT
- 3:14has been about conversation. You talk to it,
- 3:16it talks back. But it's clear the vision now
- 3:19is to make it a real digital assistant. something
- 3:21that actually does things, not just talks about
- 3:23them. Exactly. To make you, as CEO Sam Altman
- 3:27put it, more productive, more inventive, to learn
- 3:30faster. And they're doing that by pulling third
- 3:32-party apps directly into the chat. And we're
- 3:34talking about big names here. Spotify, Zillow,
- 3:38Canva, Expedia. Figma, Coursera, Booking .com.
- 3:43The list goes on. And the key is... You never
- 3:45leave the chat window. Right. It's not just a
- 3:47link that sends you somewhere else. It happens
- 3:49right there. It's full integration. So you can
- 3:51just type, you know, Coursera, teach me about
- 3:52machine learning, and the app experience just
- 3:55starts. Or like in that demo, Figma, turn this
- 3:58sketch into a workable diagram, and it just does
- 4:01it right there in front of you. The Zillow demo
- 4:03was the one that really got me. You ask it to
- 4:05find apartments, and instead of a list of texts...
- 4:07An interactive map just pops up? A fully interactive
- 4:09map. You can zoom. You can click. You can keep
- 4:12talking to the AI to filter the results. It's
- 4:14a whole new level of interaction. So how does
- 4:16that even work, technically? It's a new system
- 4:18they call the Model Context Protocol, or MCP.
- 4:21Think of it less like an old API that just shuffles
- 4:24data back and forth, and more like embedding
- 4:27a tiny working website inside a text bubble.
- 4:31Wow. It lets the app render a full UI, even video,
- 4:35right inside the chat. It turns the AI from a
- 4:39simple tool into a real platform. And here's
- 4:42where it gets a little wild for everyday life,
- 4:44this idea of contextual surfacing. Right, the
- 4:46AI won't always wait for you to call up an app
- 4:48by name. So if I type, I need a playlist for
- 4:50a party, Spotify just appears. That's the idea.
- 4:53And they're saying DoorDash, Uber, and Instacart
- 4:55are coming soon. Imagine planning a dinner and
- 4:58having the delivery options just show up in the
- 5:00conversation. OK, but that brings up the business
- 5:02side of this. OpenAI has what? 800 million weekly
- 5:05users. They're on track for 13 billion dollars
- 5:08in revenue, but their costs are insane. Astronomical.
- 5:12They have to make money. And being the front
- 5:14door to all these other services, maybe taking
- 5:16a cut through something like an instant checkout.
- 5:18Yeah. That's the fastest way there. But doesn't
- 5:20that immediately create a competition problem?
- 5:22How does chat GPT choose between DoorDash and,
- 5:25say, Instacart? That is the billion dollar question,
- 5:29isn't it? They'll say it's about the best user
- 5:31experience, but you have to imagine companies
- 5:33will eventually pay to be the default choice.
- 5:36So AI optimization becomes the new SEO. It's
- 5:39the new battleground. Yeah. And what about the
- 5:41privacy? If I'm chatting with Zillow inside ChatGPT,
- 5:45how much of my other conversations does Zillow
- 5:47get to see? Right. If I was just talking about
- 5:48my salary, does Zillow now know that? That's
- 5:51the part that needs some serious scrutiny. The
- 5:53AI needs context to work. but sharing that context
- 5:57with all these third -party companies is a, well,
- 6:00it's a huge leap in how much of our data is being
- 6:02shared. That is a massive story. Okay, let's
- 6:05move from the digital world up into the atmosphere.
- 6:07Our second story is about a literal space race.
- 6:10This is a really fascinating play by AST Space
- 6:13Mobile. They're going head -to -head with players
- 6:15like SpaceX, but with a totally different approach
- 6:18to satellite internet. They just launched something
- 6:20called Bluebird 6, and the scale of this thing
- 6:23is just incredible. It is genuinely enormous
- 6:27and its size is the whole point. What they're
- 6:30building is a space -based cellular network that
- 6:34connects directly to a normal standard smartphone.
- 6:37The one that's in your pocket right now. Exactly.
- 6:39No special dish, no bulky antenna, no satellite
- 6:42phone. The goal is just to make your current
- 6:44phone work everywhere. To finally kill the dead
- 6:47zone. That's the mission. But your phone's antenna
- 6:50is tiny. It's made to talk to a cell tower a
- 6:53few miles away. To get it to talk to a satellite
- 6:55hundreds of miles up in space. The satellite
- 6:58needs a really, really big year. A very big year.
- 7:01And that's Bluebird 6. It has the largest commercial
- 7:03phased array ever put in low Earth orbit. We're
- 7:06talking nearly 2 ,400 square feet. 2 ,400 square
- 7:09feet. That's the size of a house. unfurling in
- 7:13space. It's a technical marvel and it acts like
- 7:15a giant orbiting cell tower that's powerful enough
- 7:18to hear all those little weak phone signals from
- 7:20down on Earth. So it's an ambitious plan. What's
- 7:23their timeline for actually getting this up and
- 7:25running? They're moving incredibly fast. They're
- 7:28planning five more orbital launches by the end
- 7:31of the first quarter of 2026. Wow. And they're
- 7:34aiming to have 45 to 60 of these satellites up
- 7:37by the end of 2026. That would be enough for
- 7:40continuous coverage across the U .S. and a few
- 7:42other markets. That is an aggressive schedule.
- 7:45But we have to talk about the money, right? These
- 7:47space ventures are famously expensive. And that's
- 7:49the tightrope they're walking. The launch news
- 7:51gave the stock a little bump, which shows investors
- 7:54are optimistic about the tech. The company is
- 7:58still burning through cash. They just missed
- 8:00their Q3 revenue targets and reported a bigger
- 8:03loss than Wall Street was expecting. So it's
- 8:05a classic growth story. They're betting big on
- 8:07the future, but they have to survive the present.
- 8:09It's a high wire act. A very high wire act. Every
- 8:12single one of these launches has to go perfectly
- 8:15to keep that investor confidence high. OK, from
- 8:17the future of connectivity in space, let's come
- 8:19back to a regulatory fight on the ground. Our
- 8:22third story, Italy versus Metta over WhatsApp.
- 8:25And this gets to a really core question for the
- 8:28AI era. Can a company that owns a dominant platform,
- 8:32like a messaging app everyone uses, use that
- 8:35power to favor its own AI? And Italy's antitrust
- 8:39regulator thinks the answer is a clear no. They
- 8:41do. They've ordered Meta to immediately suspend
- 8:44new terms that would block rival AI chatbots
- 8:48from using WhatsApp. So what did Meta actually
- 8:50do to trigger this? Back in October, they updated
- 8:53their terms for the WhatsApp business solution.
- 8:56And the new rule basically said if your main
- 8:58business is offering an AI service, you can't
- 9:00use our platform. Wow, that's pretty direct.
- 9:03Very direct. And regulators see that as pure
- 9:05abuse of power. I mean, in Italy, Over 37 million
- 9:09people use WhatsApp. It's essential for business.
- 9:11So by blocking competitors, Metta is essentially
- 9:13forcing businesses to use its own Metta AI. That's
- 9:17the argument. That it completely distorts the
- 9:19competition in this brand new AI chatbot market
- 9:21before it even gets off the ground. What's Metta's
- 9:24side of the story? What's their defense? Metta
- 9:26is saying the ruling is fundamentally flawed.
- 9:29They're making a technical argument. They claim
- 9:32the WhatsApp business API was just never built
- 9:34for this kind of traffic from general AI chatbots.
- 9:38So they're saying it would strain their systems.
- 9:40Right. They're framing it as a stability and
- 9:42system integrity issue, not a competition issue.
- 9:45So Meta says we're protecting our platform and
- 9:48the regulators are hearing you're protecting
- 9:50your monopoly. That's the conflict right there.
- 9:53And the stakes here are Enormous. If Metta is
- 9:57found to be abusing its dominant position under
- 10:00EU rules, the fine could be massive. How massive
- 10:04are we talking? Up to 10 % of its global turnover.
- 10:0610 % of their worldwide revenue. Yep. Based on
- 10:09their 2024 numbers, that could be a fine of over
- 10:11$16 .4 billion. That's a number that gets your
- 10:15attention. It's a number that forces companies
- 10:17to completely rethink their strategy. It shows
- 10:20you just how seriously Europe is taking this.
- 10:22Before we wrap things up, we need to thank our
- 10:23second sponsor, SCONI. Sconee is the place for
- 10:27premium golf shoes. If you're serious about your
- 10:29game, or even if you just want to look good and
- 10:31be comfortable on the course, they have amazing

- 10:43You can find those high performance shoes at
- 10:45sconee .com. That's S -K -O -N -I dot aw dot
- 10:49com. Okay, so let's do a quick recap. Three huge
- 10:53stories today. First, ChadGPT is no longer just
- 10:56a chatbot, it's becoming an integrated application
- 10:59hub. Changing how we interact with everything
- 11:01from Spotify to Zillow. Second, the space race
- 11:03is heating up with AST Space Mobile's giant Bluebird
- 11:076 satellite. A 2 ,400 square foot marvel designed
- 11:10to bring cell service to your standard phone
- 11:12everywhere. A direct shot at eliminating connectivity
- 11:15gaps across the globe. And finally, a big regulatory
- 11:18showdown in Europe. Meta is facing serious heat
- 11:21for allegedly using WhatsApp's dominance to shut
- 11:23out competing AI chatbots. The big theme connecting
- 11:26all this is really about building new infrastructure,
- 11:29isn't it? AI is becoming the new digital middle
- 11:32layer for everything, while things like the Bluebird
- 11:35satellites are rewriting the physical infrastructure
- 11:38of the planet. You know, thinking about that
- 11:40Bluebird satellite, it makes you wonder. How
- 11:43long until that kind of space -based service
- 11:46isn't just a backup for when you're hiking? But
- 11:49the main way we communicate. Exactly. When does
- 11:51the cell tower on the ground just become obsolete?
- 11:55That is a fascinating thought to chew on. We're
- 11:57here to help at Snarfles, so reach out on our
- 11:58website if you have any more questions. That's
- 12:04a wrap on today's top stories. Remember, tech
