- 2:40Speaker 1: I just saw the new Netflix movie The Old Guard. Wow.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Netflix has done it again, and they're using some talent
- 2:45Speaker 1: and outstanding black girl magic this time and Gina Prince
- 2:48Speaker 1: Bitewood and Kiki Lane. Here's a quick movie synopsis. Led
- 2:52Speaker 1: by a warrior name Andy played by Academy Ward winner
- 2:56Speaker 1: Charles Thereon a cool A group of tight knit mercenaries
- 2:59Speaker 1: with a mysteriou inability to die have fought to protect
- 3:02Speaker 1: the modal world for centuries. But when the team is
- 3:04Speaker 1: recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary
- 3:08Speaker 1: abilities are suddenly exposed, is up to Andy and now,
- 3:11Speaker 1: as played by Kiki Lane. You've seen her and if
- 3:14Speaker 1: Bill Street could talk and Native Son, She's the newest
- 3:17Speaker 1: member to join their ranks to help the group eliminate
- 3:20Speaker 1: the thread of those who seek to replicate and monetize
- 3:23Speaker 1: their power by any means necessary. Based on the acclaimed
- 3:26Speaker 1: graphic novel by Gred Rucker and directed by Gina Prince Bitewood.
- 3:30Speaker 1: She directed Love in Basketball and Brown the Lights, The
- 3:32Speaker 1: Old Guard is a gritty, grounded, action packed story that
- 3:36Speaker 1: shows living forever is harder than it looks. Please work
- 3:39Speaker 1: with the money making conversations the director Gina Prince and
- 3:42Speaker 1: Bitewood and one of the stars, Kiki Lane, ladies welcome.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Let me tell you, Gina, I love I have success.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So I love female characters first of all, and strong
- 3:54Speaker 1: mentally and physical characters just just I just love and
- 3:59Speaker 1: I have to give you an eight plus something. Tell
- 4:00Speaker 1: us about the development of the female characters, because this
- 4:03Speaker 1: is this movie is really physical and its action driven.
- 4:07Speaker 1: It was something I so loved about this story, um,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you know, originally created by Greg Rucca. The fact that
- 4:13Speaker 1: these two women, Andy Nile are warriors, and it just
- 4:17Speaker 1: is there's such a normalcy to that and for me,
- 4:20Speaker 1: growing up an athlete, that's how I was raised, and
- 4:23Speaker 1: that's you know all I knew all the women around
- 4:26Speaker 1: me were like that, and I find it really sad
- 4:29Speaker 1: that so many women don't get to grow up with
- 4:31Speaker 1: that mentality, grow up with the permission to tap into
- 4:35Speaker 1: who we are. We do have that warrior in us, um.
- 4:38Speaker 1: So the more that we can see it up on screen, um,
- 4:41Speaker 1: I think, then you can see it for yourself and
- 4:43Speaker 1: start to embody that. So I love Andy and Nil.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I love what they have to say, and they have
- 4:48Speaker 1: both have different personalities. So, Kiki, you play the role now,
- 4:51Speaker 1: you know, and uh, it's five ft nine physical, you know,
- 4:54Speaker 1: so you know you really were physical in this role.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Tell us about you know, being invited for of all,
- 5:00Speaker 1: screaming that you got the job and you're realizing the
- 5:02Speaker 1: work you have to put into it physically to keep
- 5:04Speaker 1: your job. You know, it was I mean I knew,
- 5:11Speaker 1: I knew somewhat what I was getting, Uh, you know,
- 5:16Speaker 1: speaking to to Gina, she she made it clear at
- 5:19Speaker 1: our director session, you know what she was going to
- 5:21Speaker 1: to require of me, and I told her to bring
- 5:24Speaker 1: it um and that's what I had to do. So
- 5:26Speaker 1: it definitely like there's some things you're not gonna quite
- 5:30Speaker 1: understand until you actually in it. I'm like, Oh, we're
- 5:32Speaker 1: training and training, doing all like the weapons and flipping
- 5:38Speaker 1: people and the guns and being in the gym all
- 5:41Speaker 1: the time. How long is that training period? How long
- 5:44Speaker 1: was that training period? Like three or four months? It's
- 5:46Speaker 1: finally here the season of celebration. And no matter how
- 5:50Speaker 1: you celebrate with family and friends, whether you're preparing for

- 7:41Speaker 1: That's O T T E R dot Ai. Wow, you
- 7:46Speaker 1: gotta check, you gotta check toes all good? Right? But
- 7:50Speaker 1: I mean I did feel great I mean that's the
- 7:53Speaker 1: cool thing about doing a separate training, Like you are
- 7:55Speaker 1: training your body, you are learning these skills. And I
- 7:58Speaker 1: knew that I was doing what I could do to best,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you know, to honor this character and to honor this story.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Um yeah, I mean it's very different, and but I
- 8:07Speaker 1: mean I do it again. Well, thank you, because you're
- 8:10Speaker 1: does a fantastic job, you know. You know. The next
- 8:13Speaker 1: it confuses me because the movie like this, this is
- 8:16Speaker 1: a big budget movie. Okay, I in my mind, I'm
- 8:19Speaker 1: supposed to be in the movie theater and watching this movie.
- 8:22Speaker 1: You know, thankfully I got a movie theater room. Some
- 8:24Speaker 1: a little baller here, But I just know that the
- 8:28Speaker 1: whole game has changed how you watch big budget movies now.
- 8:31Speaker 1: And you would approach to do this movie, what was
- 8:34Speaker 1: the whole thought process and sky Dance you know that's
- 8:36Speaker 1: mission impossible and start tracking? Wow, Yeah, it was about
- 8:40Speaker 1: that whole journey. Yeah. When when I first came aboard
- 8:44Speaker 1: with sky Dance, we were going to be at a studio.
- 8:46Speaker 1: This was going to be theatrical. Um. But what's so
- 8:50Speaker 1: interesting about the industry. You know, there's a fear of
- 8:55Speaker 1: female fronted action joints they're not going to do well.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Where Netflix was actively looking for a female friended action
- 9:03Speaker 1: joint and offered us hell a lot more, and you know,
- 9:10Speaker 1: there was still that thing because I'm so used to
- 9:12Speaker 1: the theatrical. I love the bigness. I love sitting in
- 9:15Speaker 1: a theater, being just enveloped in that collective, collective experience.
- 9:20Speaker 1: But the other argument was, we make movies for an audience,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and you're going to be dropping in a hundred ninety countries.
- 9:26Speaker 1: That's like crazy the amount of audience. So the beauty
- 9:30Speaker 1: about this film is that we actually get both. We
- 9:33Speaker 1: get theatrical and we get UM the global release. So
- 9:37Speaker 1: when COVID you know, goes away finally, when all of
- 9:43Speaker 1: us get it together and where masks um, it will
- 9:45Speaker 1: have some theatrical, so no audience can get both. You know,
- 9:49Speaker 1: it's really interesting kicking in your character because of you
- 9:51Speaker 1: the new Warrior, you know, and Andy is the old
- 9:54Speaker 1: Guard forever, live, forever. It is traumatized. I really would,
- 9:58Speaker 1: I really enjoyed the whole journey be because you know,
- 10:00Speaker 1: you still believe in God, you know, and your character
- 10:03Speaker 1: you still believe. You didn't understand more the immortality part
- 10:06Speaker 1: of the game and you have to make a transition.
- 10:08Speaker 1: In the movie talk about that whole journey and also
- 10:13Speaker 1: given us a credible moment where you understood you had
- 10:15Speaker 1: to change or except who you are. Um. I mean
- 10:19Speaker 1: I I kind of just leaned into Like that's again
- 10:24Speaker 1: one of the special things about these characters and like, yes,
- 10:26Speaker 1: they have this incredible ability, but they're still dealing with
- 10:29Speaker 1: things that we recognize, you know, on a very human level.
- 10:32Speaker 1: So for me, I was connecting more to thinking of,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you know, those moments where life just hits you and
- 10:39Speaker 1: just turns your whole life upside down and you have
- 10:42Speaker 1: to figure out, you know, how to move forward. Um
- 10:45Speaker 1: and kind of leaning into you know, seeing someone who
- 10:48Speaker 1: who is struggling with that. UM. So I was able
- 10:52Speaker 1: to you know it gave it. I don't know that
- 10:57Speaker 1: the ground in this because it was coming from a
- 10:58Speaker 1: real place. I think we all can think of some
- 11:00Speaker 1: moments where it's just like, really, life, that's what you're
- 11:03Speaker 1: gonna do, and then those moments of struggling against it
- 11:08Speaker 1: and then finally getting to that place of acceptance of like,
- 11:11Speaker 1: oh okay, so this is this is what my new
- 11:14Speaker 1: life is. Wow, Gina, we're about to wrap up here,
- 11:17Speaker 1: you have you have tough. When I started to Bio,
- 11:19Speaker 1: I saw fight coordinators from John Wick, which I love
- 11:22Speaker 1: that series, so I know the hand to hand was
- 11:24Speaker 1: going to be real. And then start coordinators from the
- 11:27Speaker 1: End Game, which I loved the way they moved in
- 11:30Speaker 1: and black Panthers and all that. The whole process of
- 11:32Speaker 1: bringing that amount of talent together from a start coordinating
- 11:36Speaker 1: background and a fight coordinator the background with the town
- 11:39Speaker 1: of the cast here wrapping us up and just tell
- 11:41Speaker 1: us the final experience of all this. Yeah, I mean,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I'm one of the best and when I got it,
- 11:47Speaker 1: got it. Yeah. And the dope thing about those guys,
- 11:51Speaker 1: they're so cool, They're so collaborative. They just bring out
- 11:55Speaker 1: the best and everybody And you know what was so great.
- 11:58Speaker 1: It's just a conversation we had even before we started
- 12:01Speaker 1: designing fights about telling the story of each fight, knowing
- 12:05Speaker 1: that they had to be character driven and emotional, um,
- 12:07Speaker 1: so that they meant something. And uh, I just honestly,
- 12:11Speaker 1: every day I kept thinking, what if I did not
- 12:14Speaker 1: have these guys, What if I did not have the best,
- 12:17Speaker 1: what this film might have been? Um, they are there everything,
- 12:20Speaker 1: and I'm grateful to them. Wow, gig in any wounds
- 12:24Speaker 1: that you're gonna tell us about. Did you walked away
- 12:26Speaker 1: from the movie with that? You know that money didn't
- 12:28Speaker 1: cover it? Look nothing that scares me away from doing
- 12:32Speaker 1: another awesome the old God It premiers you a lot
- 12:35Speaker 1: in Thank you, Gina Black Hair Magic. I appreciate both.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Thank you, Thank you. In this season of giving, Cools
- 12:48Speaker 1: has gifts for all your loved ones. For those who
