- 1:54Speaker 1: as an actress, comedian and entrepreneur, her the Coca Brown Collection,
- 1:59Speaker 1: is a high I'll be turned passion turn calls during
- 2:02Speaker 1: this pandemic. With no acting gigs, comedy, stand up club
- 2:05Speaker 1: dates or TV film role to play right now, how
- 2:08Speaker 1: is she making money? Because these times are not working
- 2:11Speaker 1: for me. She's most notably known for her lead role
- 2:14Speaker 1: in Tyler Paris, The Single Mom's Club and for Better
- 2:17Speaker 1: or Worse, Please work on the money making conversation to
- 2:20Speaker 1: hilarious comedian actress Coco Brown, Hey, how are you to
- 2:25Speaker 1: get all that out? I'd set you up? No, I
- 2:30Speaker 1: come on now, you know, because you got a big
- 2:31Speaker 1: restI I had to like go through and pick what
- 2:34Speaker 1: I thought would be noteworthy. Because you got a body
- 2:36Speaker 1: of work that's fantastic. But let's go to the beginning,
- 2:39Speaker 1: because you know you hit straight heart with me, but
- 2:42Speaker 1: the stand up comedy and uh, it's such a male
- 2:46Speaker 1: dominated field. So how did you get started? And how
- 2:48Speaker 1: did you start carving out your brand? Coca? You know
- 2:52Speaker 1: it's study. Um, I never, Emili years, thought I would
- 2:55Speaker 1: be a comedian. I mean, you know, I wanted growing up.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I wanted to be Clay Hustable and I don't I know,
- 3:02Speaker 1: she wasn't a real character, but in my mind she was.
- 3:04Speaker 1: She was. She was achievable. So when I graduated college, Um,
- 3:09Speaker 1: I had done some internships and gotten the job, and
- 3:13Speaker 1: a friend of mine, who thought I was I thought
- 3:15Speaker 1: I was funny all through college introduced me to a
- 3:18Speaker 1: guy who owned a comedy club in d C. And
- 3:21Speaker 1: a barbecue, and I guess he had told him about me,
- 3:24Speaker 1: and he was like, man, she's really funny. So this
- 3:26Speaker 1: thing I know, He's invited me down the open NC.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I've never been afraid of the stage. I've been acting
- 3:30Speaker 1: and doing theater since I was ten. But um, I
- 3:34Speaker 1: went down to his club. I didn't open mic night.
- 3:36Speaker 1: It was a very interesting night because I thought you
- 3:39Speaker 1: had to try to be a comic, and I learned
- 3:41Speaker 1: quite quickly that trying to be a comic and being
- 3:45Speaker 1: a comic are two different things. Um. But when I
- 3:49Speaker 1: realized they weren't laughing at me trying to be a comic,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and I just started rambling about the fact that I
- 3:54Speaker 1: really worked at Ringland Brothers and I had a real job,
- 3:57Speaker 1: and the crowd begin to laugh. That's when I realized
- 4:00Speaker 1: that people liked what's real, like what's real and relatable
- 4:03Speaker 1: with what's funny. So um, it kind of beat me.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I thought it was fun. I thought it was gonna
- 4:08Speaker 1: be like a hobby, but it turned out to be
- 4:11Speaker 1: um more so of a career because I ended up
- 4:16Speaker 1: getting a mentor Darcel. The fact Dr blaichmat who recently
- 4:20Speaker 1: passed away. God rest his soul. But he mentored a
- 4:23Speaker 1: lot of DC comics, you know, Martin Lawrence, Tommy Davis
- 4:27Speaker 1: and Bive Chappelle, Donnelle Roblins. I could go down the
- 4:29Speaker 1: line and um, he took me under his wing, and
- 4:32Speaker 1: he taught me the game. He taught me the business.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And um, after a while, I realized that it took
- 4:37Speaker 1: it took my boss at Ringling Brothers to see something
- 4:41Speaker 1: in me that I hadn't seen. She actually gave me
- 4:43Speaker 1: the option of either quitting or her firing me because
- 4:46Speaker 1: she had come to one of my shows and she said,
- 4:49Speaker 1: you're wasting your time in this cubicle. You have a
- 4:51Speaker 1: true talent ring Brothers. I was working for Greenland Brothers
- 4:56Speaker 1: corporate officers. Yes, in Virginia in the average some big
- 5:00Speaker 1: elephants and you know, I'm just talking that's the office.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But no, I don't know. I knew you weren't in
- 5:09Speaker 1: the circus. I'm just saying, but that's the brand that
- 5:11Speaker 1: you were representing elephants, clowns and trappy artists. And here
- 5:17Speaker 1: you are, just energetic, funny. Your friend been laughing at
- 5:22Speaker 1: you all through college. He's been laughing at so much.
- 5:24Speaker 1: He introduced you to the owner of a club at
- 5:26Speaker 1: a barbecue, which is funny in itself. Okay, exactly exactly. Hey,
- 5:31Speaker 1: come on here, he was like, she needs to be
- 5:32Speaker 1: a comment stoptious. Come over here, girl, put down that streep.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Come on here, peach color, come on here. There, I
- 5:41Speaker 1: guess funny here she's funny, funny, funny, funny, funny, funny, funny.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Now so, and I know that's how I started to
- 5:47Speaker 1: stand up. You know, you go on stage. It's not
- 5:50Speaker 1: about being nervous. It's about a new experience and you
- 5:53Speaker 1: don't know what to do. You know. I just went
- 5:55Speaker 1: on stage and I worked up some some things I
- 5:58Speaker 1: thought were funny, and they did laugh at it. So
- 6:00Speaker 1: that didn't help out the next step, which is to
- 6:02Speaker 1: get back on stage again. And so it really it
- 6:06Speaker 1: really allows for you to grow as a person. But
- 6:08Speaker 1: like you said, but that wasn't your first love. Being
- 6:11Speaker 1: on stage as an actress was your first love? Correct? Yeah? Yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 1: when I was ten years old. Um, my fifth grade
- 6:20Speaker 1: teacher Ms. Marshall, who so much love for it because
- 6:22Speaker 1: she didn't even realize what she was doing it. She
- 6:24Speaker 1: put me the lead in a play in the fifth grade.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I had so many lines and that was my first time,
- 6:31Speaker 1: and everybody was like, oh my god, like you should
- 6:34Speaker 1: be an actress, Like you were so good, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 1: but in the fifth grade, in the fifth grade, in
- 6:39Speaker 1: the fifth grade, yeah, just slaying in the fifth grade
- 6:47Speaker 1: in the fifth grade. Yeah, my grandmother made my costume
- 6:51Speaker 1: and everything. Um. But you know, coming from such a
- 6:56Speaker 1: traditional Southern family, that was not an option. I was
- 7:00Speaker 1: used to go to school, get good grades, getting the
- 7:01Speaker 1: good college. Mae guy, get married, have some babies, and
- 7:05Speaker 1: come home to my parents of your Sunday for dinner.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I wouldn't most to be in the Hollywood, but you did.
- 7:10Speaker 1: You did to go to college. You got your degree?
- 7:13Speaker 1: Now did you get got two degrees? So you highly educated?
- 7:17Speaker 1: You high And what are degrees? What are degrees at
- 7:19Speaker 1: what college? I have a bachelor's and mass communications with
- 7:23Speaker 1: a focus and advertising, and I have a master's in
- 7:25Speaker 1: secondary education. And we're college University of Scenic DC GE,
- 7:31Speaker 1: Commonwealth University with undergrad and University of Phoenix with graduates.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Now we got all that that good education behind you
- 7:38Speaker 1: got all how you started? Now did you go on
- 7:42Speaker 1: the road being a comic first, or did you move
- 7:44Speaker 1: to be an actress first? What did you do? I
- 7:47Speaker 1: would have the road to be a comic first. Um,
- 7:49Speaker 1: that was just an adventure when I look back at
- 7:52Speaker 1: some of the crazy stuff I did, like work at
- 7:54Speaker 1: eight hour day and Ringland brothers, get in my car
- 7:57Speaker 1: at six pm at night, drive to New York to
- 8:00Speaker 1: do a couple of open mics and drive back to Maryland,
- 8:03Speaker 1: or back to Maryland where I lived, and being worked
- 8:05Speaker 1: the next morning by eight I couldn't imagine doing that
- 8:08Speaker 1: now I would die. But back then I was doing
- 8:11Speaker 1: it three or four times a week, like it was
- 8:12Speaker 1: nothing right where you had to I know that I
- 8:15Speaker 1: worked for the IBM, and I was be on stage
- 8:17Speaker 1: three or four o'clock in the morning. And sometimes because
- 8:19Speaker 1: you know, when you're doing an open micaela comic, you
- 8:21Speaker 1: know it's a line of it could be comments on
- 8:24Speaker 1: that list, and you know and so and last spreads
- 8:30Speaker 1: can make their set longer as well. You know, so
- 8:33Speaker 1: so really so when you talk about effort and you
- 8:36Speaker 1: talk about dreams, that's why I'd like to talk about
- 8:38Speaker 1: this on the show, is about you know, there are
- 8:40Speaker 1: no guarantees that there's a plan but what is guaranteed.
- 8:43Speaker 1: If you want to be successful, you have to put
- 8:44Speaker 1: forth the effort. You have to make sacrifice. And that's
- 8:47Speaker 1: what you're talking about. That drive up, you know, and
- 8:49Speaker 1: we know that drive back was scary, you know, worrying
- 8:52Speaker 1: about falling to sleep, worrying about what I'm making on town,
- 8:55Speaker 1: a lot of fraying, put your head out the window
- 8:57Speaker 1: to stay awake, you know, driving with the air condition though,
- 9:00Speaker 1: all kind of slapping yourself, all that kind of stuff
- 9:02Speaker 1: you were doing on a regular basis there. Way, I
- 9:04Speaker 1: know because I did those techniques because I was crazy,
- 9:07Speaker 1: just trying to get to that dream. Didn't know what
- 9:10Speaker 1: your dream was, but just trying to get to that dream.
- 9:13Speaker 1: And so exactly so, so now you're going to New York.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You just starting to get your wheels on the your Now,
- 9:19Speaker 1: when did your first big break come? Coacer Brown? Um, Honestly,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I think the first big break that got me noticed
- 9:28Speaker 1: was showtime to the Apollo when they were doing the
- 9:32Speaker 1: comedy t KO and I went five rounds before I
- 9:35Speaker 1: got eliminated. Um that got me noticed by a lot
- 9:40Speaker 1: of people in terms of management, promoters, clubs, things like that. Um,
- 9:46Speaker 1: So I started working heavily, and then um, I would say.
- 9:51Speaker 1: The next one after that most was Tyler Perry's for
- 9:55Speaker 1: Better or Work. M Now, how did you get there?
- 9:58Speaker 1: Because Tyler's always getting new talent a shot. So did
- 10:03Speaker 1: you auditioning forward or your hand pick four? How did that?
- 10:06Speaker 1: Tyler is so influential. I've known it for a lot
- 10:09Speaker 1: of years, and I will He's never he loves giving
- 10:12Speaker 1: giving young people a shot. A first time actor to
- 10:16Speaker 1: tell us about that experience, it's studdy. I auditioned for
- 10:20Speaker 1: for Better or Worse, not knowing that Tyler had seen
- 10:25Speaker 1: me at a comedy club in l a like about
- 10:28Speaker 1: a year before that, and he had said that, you know,
- 10:32Speaker 1: he wanted to you know, he he told me, he goes.
- 10:35Speaker 1: When I saw you, I said, wow, I want to
- 10:36Speaker 1: work with her. But at the time I didn't have,
- 10:38Speaker 1: you know, a project, he said. But when I got
- 10:41Speaker 1: for Better. You know, when I wrote for Better or
- 10:43Speaker 1: Worse and you came in the audition, I immediately remembered you,
- 10:47Speaker 1: he said, And basically at that point you had the part.
- 10:50Speaker 1: It was just because she acts, he goes, and you
- 10:53Speaker 1: killed that audition so much. I didn't have to see
- 10:55Speaker 1: anybody else after you. So you you're not knowing you
- 10:59Speaker 1: got Now that's some pressure. Now that's some unknown pressure.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Because I went in just auditioning like anybody else. I
- 11:07Speaker 1: didn't know that he had already seen me, right, so
- 11:10Speaker 1: and knew of my work. I had no idea he
- 11:12Speaker 1: knew of my work. So, not knowing that usually went
- 11:15Speaker 1: and then just did the coca, you know, did the
- 11:17Speaker 1: coke with that audition got it And so it's finally here,
- 11:23Speaker 1: the season of celebration. And no matter how you celebrate

- 13:18Speaker 1: E R dot ai. How many episodes did you do
- 13:21Speaker 1: for Better Work? Hundred and one hundred and sixty seven
- 13:29Speaker 1: hundred and six seven. Now what did that do for
- 13:34Speaker 1: your brillin as a stand up comic? Now? Now you
- 13:38Speaker 1: black people know your Now you know Coca Brown, Coca Brown. Now,
- 13:42Speaker 1: how how did the reaction start? Could you? Were you
- 13:45Speaker 1: selling that Dayton comedy closed and small venues? How did
- 13:49Speaker 1: that reaction start for you? And then when did you
- 13:51Speaker 1: start noticing people knew who you were and was reacting
- 13:54Speaker 1: to you Coco? And it was probably after like the
- 13:59Speaker 1: second season for Better or Worse? When you know, when
- 14:04Speaker 1: the first season I was more so, you know, I
- 14:06Speaker 1: wasn't in every episode. When we came back to the
- 14:09Speaker 1: second season, Tyler had me in all the episodes and
- 14:12Speaker 1: that's how it remained, uh, from that day forward that
- 14:16Speaker 1: my character Jennifer was in all the episodes and people
- 14:20Speaker 1: begin to recognize me as Jennifer. And so when I
- 14:23Speaker 1: began to you know, run around that time when I
- 14:26Speaker 1: started to really get into comedy clubs and the improblems,
- 14:31Speaker 1: the Funny Bones and stuff started letting me in for
- 14:32Speaker 1: a weekend, not just Black Knight, you know, and so
- 14:37Speaker 1: and so I told them to specifically advertise it as
- 14:42Speaker 1: Jennifer from Pyler Perry for Better or Worse. Well, when
- 14:45Speaker 1: I say it packed the room, I mean Tyler Perry
- 14:48Speaker 1: has a shoot. I mean you can't even put a number,
- 14:52Speaker 1: and then you say that you're a part of one
- 14:54Speaker 1: of his shows as a character that just opened up.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I mean people would lined up. And to this day,
- 15:00Speaker 1: even with me now getting a fan base for mine
- 15:03Speaker 1: one one on the Fox, which is which is a
- 15:05Speaker 1: whole different fans drama, which is a drama exactly the
- 15:10Speaker 1: For Better or Worse fans are so loyal they still
- 15:13Speaker 1: come out to my shows, pack out the shows. Always
- 15:15Speaker 1: asked me if the show is gonna come back. So,
- 15:17Speaker 1: I mean it definitely impacted my career, especially my stand
- 15:21Speaker 1: up career. I mean, to this day, if I put
- 15:24Speaker 1: from Tyler Perry's single Moms Club and For Better or Worse,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I can guarantee three quarters, if not more than club
- 15:30Speaker 1: going to pack with black folks coming in to see
- 15:33Speaker 1: black Cocole brown, Cocobe brown and excuse me and latinos
- 15:38Speaker 1: Latinos a huge fans. I'm talking about that on the
- 15:41Speaker 1: social media and when come back, I'm gonna we're gonna
- 15:43Speaker 1: get to the entrepreneurship side of Coco Brown. This is
- 15:46Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald. You're listening to money making conversation. You see
- 15:49Speaker 1: on that one one that's a little drama. You see
- 15:51Speaker 1: on the single Moms Club, that's a big move. You've
- 15:54Speaker 1: seen on for Better Work, that's a hundred sixty seven
- 15:57Speaker 1: sitcom episodes. She's big time and she's on money make
- 16:00Speaker 1: a conversation. That's Coca Brown. Hi. This Rashan McDonald and
- 16:05Speaker 1: you're listening to money making conversations. She's still on the line.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I've kepful for two breaks, Tyler Perry, you know, move back,
- 16:11Speaker 1: ras Sean McDonald gotta now. We got rashand got Coca Brown. Now,
- 16:16Speaker 1: you know, we talked about how she started. We talked
- 16:18Speaker 1: about being a stand up, which is the beauty of
- 16:20Speaker 1: being a stand up and an actresses because you can
- 16:23Speaker 1: make money before another opportunity comes to you. And that's
- 16:26Speaker 1: what that's the beauty of being a stand up. And
- 16:29Speaker 1: that's what she talks about. She talked about in the
- 16:31Speaker 1: Entrepreneur she's out there. She a business woman, you know,
- 16:34Speaker 1: And a lot of people look at stand ups as talent,
- 16:36Speaker 1: but really we're business people because we got a book
- 16:39Speaker 1: out days. We gotta hustle out days. We gotta sometimes
- 16:41Speaker 1: we're out there at the club. We gotta book on
- 16:43Speaker 1: our travel, hotel room, feed ourselves. If you get big enough,
- 16:47Speaker 1: you gotta get security and limos and car services and
- 16:51Speaker 1: all these things. So when you become a stand up,
- 16:53Speaker 1: the early stages of a stand up, you are a
- 16:56Speaker 1: small business. You are an entrepreneur, and you are self employed,
- 17:01Speaker 1: and so you already had that skill set down pad
- 17:04Speaker 1: when you became a working actress. Now now it's like
- 17:09Speaker 1: when you're in this time, now that we all got
- 17:11Speaker 1: caught off guard by this, by this pandemic, what are
- 17:14Speaker 1: you doing to uh, you know, keep yourself focused, to
- 17:17Speaker 1: be able to plan because we know it's gonna end.
- 17:19Speaker 1: We know we're gonna get back out in the streets.
- 17:20Speaker 1: We know we're gonna get back out in the clubs,
- 17:22Speaker 1: We're gonna get back in the arenas. What are you
- 17:24Speaker 1: doing right now during this period, Coca? You know, I
- 17:27Speaker 1: am hustling my other businesses. I mean, it has been
- 17:30Speaker 1: crazy that what has started out as hobbies have now
- 17:33Speaker 1: become my main source of income. I have a c
- 17:36Speaker 1: D D business called the Coca Brown Collection that um
- 17:40Speaker 1: I sell CBD infused body scrubs, body cleans, and hand sanitizers.
- 17:46Speaker 1: And that is just taken off, especially with the hand
- 17:49Speaker 1: sanitizers and the time that we're in. Nowack, you got
- 17:54Speaker 1: hands in time. I mean you ordered a hand sanitizer
- 17:58Speaker 1: right now, I can get it, yes for me? Yeah? Okay,
- 18:02Speaker 1: now all right now let's tell everybody put that put
- 18:04Speaker 1: that website on the line right now, so all the time,
- 18:07Speaker 1: Coco Brown, also Coco Brown. I gotta I got a
- 18:09Speaker 1: mailing list to over ninety thousand fans. You know, I
- 18:12Speaker 1: got almost a million social media followers. So please give
- 18:16Speaker 1: me a banner Coco Brown, the Collection, and I would
- 18:21Speaker 1: put it on my social media because everybody's looking for that.
- 18:24Speaker 1: You know, it's gotten to the point now that they're
- 18:25Speaker 1: even advating. They're running a national commercials for these masks
- 18:30Speaker 1: that people are making mass so yeah, and and their
- 18:32Speaker 1: price gouging it on Amazon one bottle across yes, yes, yes,
- 18:37Speaker 1: so so you have hand sanitizers. This is fantastic because
- 18:41Speaker 1: you know, because That's one of the things I tell
- 18:43Speaker 1: people in their six steps is that you know, you
- 18:46Speaker 1: gotta have your hand sanitizer when you leave the house.
- 18:48Speaker 1: You know, in that way, you can especially were going
- 18:51Speaker 1: into public environments when you when you get back, the
- 18:53Speaker 1: carts for your hands before you touch your car keys
- 18:56Speaker 1: and if you touch your string will So there's a
- 18:59Speaker 1: lot of things that we can deal with on a
- 19:01Speaker 1: regular basis. This is soundingly fantastic, So so continue along
- 19:04Speaker 1: this client. You stop it right there, because the business
- 19:06Speaker 1: side of Roushawn had to come and go, whoa, you
- 19:10Speaker 1: got hands. I realized there was a need for it
- 19:15Speaker 1: because you know when when when you know, two months ago,
- 19:18Speaker 1: I didn't have hand sanitized it. But when I realized
- 19:20Speaker 1: it was a need for it, and I knew that
- 19:22Speaker 1: I could make it, and then I could give people
- 19:23Speaker 1: this you know, great sense and they could have it
- 19:26Speaker 1: with it without c B d Um it took off.
- 19:29Speaker 1: You know. I sold out my first batch in what
- 19:32Speaker 1: two days, you know? And um then I have creams
- 19:36Speaker 1: and I also have body scrubs that all CBD infused.
- 19:40Speaker 1: But then I started making CBD infused goodies. I have
- 19:44Speaker 1: brownies and cookies. Now what exactly is c b D
- 19:54Speaker 1: B b D is all the benefits of marijuana without
- 19:57Speaker 1: th HC, without the marijuana resist wolf. Okay, so you're
- 20:01Speaker 1: saying that now the marijuana residual is that the part
- 20:04Speaker 1: that you know get you as they say hi, that's
- 20:07Speaker 1: the protect to get you that they get you buck Exactly.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Cb D gives you all the great benefit of cannabis
- 20:17Speaker 1: implement you know, relief of inflammation, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, you know,
- 20:23Speaker 1: sleep disorders, insomnia, depression, anxiety. But it doesn't have th
- 20:28Speaker 1: HC in it, which is what is the residue of
- 20:31Speaker 1: weed that shows up in your drug tests. Now I
- 20:34Speaker 1: give people the option do you want your edible with
- 20:37Speaker 1: th HC or without th HC Because some people are
- 20:41Speaker 1: still work in jobs that they get tested, they can't
- 20:43Speaker 1: have that from in their tests. But it still provides
- 20:46Speaker 1: all the benefits for anxiety, depression, in psomnia, pain, inflammation,
- 20:51Speaker 1: things of that nature. Um. And the good thing is
- 20:54Speaker 1: it's handmade, it's organic and um. From what I told
- 20:58Speaker 1: from all my wonderful customer, it's gooder than the mo
- 21:01Speaker 1: fol It's like people have literally gotten their ordered that morning.
- 21:04Speaker 1: And don't you ever throw another old line like that
- 21:08Speaker 1: on my radio show. That is like it is like
- 21:13Speaker 1: a forty year old line. I can't believe you said
- 21:15Speaker 1: you were old. You said old Coca Coca Brown. I
- 21:22Speaker 1: can't believe you. You got to understand, these are my
- 21:25Speaker 1: grandmother's recipes that I'm using. So you got you know,
- 21:29Speaker 1: a black woman and a creole woman that taught me
- 21:32Speaker 1: how to cook. So you know they know, you know,
- 21:34Speaker 1: they take absolutely absolutely so But before we get too deep,
- 21:36Speaker 1: because I want to come back to the cravables because
- 21:38Speaker 1: in the beginning during your intro, I stated that the
- 21:42Speaker 1: Coca Brown Collection is a hobby turned passion turn calls.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Because I want to talk about the calls part of
- 21:48Speaker 1: this because it's very important because one of my dear
- 21:52Speaker 1: friends and one of my producers I've been doing over
- 21:54Speaker 1: twenty years, she has lupus. So when I talk about
- 21:58Speaker 1: lupas is not something that I'm familiar with, and I
- 22:01Speaker 1: know the impact and she lives a very uh quality,
- 22:04Speaker 1: quality quality for your life. She has a beautiful daughter,
- 22:07Speaker 1: but she also has to take medicine. So let's talk
- 22:10Speaker 1: about the whole cause part of the the Coca Brown Collection, right, Um,
- 22:17Speaker 1: I partnered years a year and a half ago with
- 22:20Speaker 1: a group called the Social Butterflies Network Butterfly representing the
- 22:23Speaker 1: Butterfly Rash that lucas patient skin and it's an organization
- 22:27Speaker 1: that provides all kinds of services for lupus survivors. And
- 22:31Speaker 1: they near and gear cost to me because my favorite
- 22:34Speaker 1: aunt had lupas when I was growing up and she
- 22:35Speaker 1: passed away when I was twenty one, and she was just,
- 22:39Speaker 1: you know, so resilient. But I watched the transformation of
- 22:42Speaker 1: this woman because of lupus, and to this day there's
- 22:45Speaker 1: no cure, and they have such minimal research and really
- 22:47Speaker 1: don't that they know it's an um an autoimmune to
- 22:51Speaker 1: that they know what's autoimmune diseins. They know what attacks
- 22:53Speaker 1: your nervous system and your immune system and all that,
- 22:56Speaker 1: but they really don't put the effort in the research
- 22:58Speaker 1: they do all the other cancers and autoimmune of disease causes.
- 23:02Speaker 1: So I partnered with them a year and a half
- 23:05Speaker 1: ago to raise money for that. But then when I
- 23:07Speaker 1: begin when I created menty toes and my CBD infused products,
- 23:12Speaker 1: a lot of them were ordering it because it was
- 23:14Speaker 1: aiding in the pain and discomfort they were getting from
- 23:17Speaker 1: their file on my AUGA things of that nature. So
- 23:20Speaker 1: I when I created the Coca Brown collection, I decided
- 23:24Speaker 1: that from ten percent of each sale would go towards
- 23:27Speaker 1: social butterflies and lupus research. Wow, because they're using it
- 23:33Speaker 1: and they raised about it. I mean I I would
- 23:36Speaker 1: say a good forty five percent of my customers of
- 23:39Speaker 1: the menty toes uh pain release cream is lucas patients
- 23:44Speaker 1: and people who suffer from everything from a neuropathy file
- 23:49Speaker 1: of my AUGA authoritis, I mean, psiatic nerve issues. I
- 23:55Speaker 1: mean I had everybody from lupas patients to fitness trainers
- 23:58Speaker 1: to firemen, and I even have a podiatrist who endorses
- 24:03Speaker 1: my mente toes and actually sells it in her office
- 24:06Speaker 1: as an alternative to prescription creams. Congratulations, that's awesome. So yeah,
- 24:12Speaker 1: it is awesome, you know because really when I'm talking
- 24:14Speaker 1: to you, you know, I'm talking to use that's the
- 24:17Speaker 1: marketing side of You're coming out of communication and advertising
- 24:20Speaker 1: side of you. Yeah, you know, I did a lot
- 24:23Speaker 1: of marketing with advertising degree side. I don't like I
- 24:26Speaker 1: still have all my marketing books, which is hilarious. Well,
- 24:29Speaker 1: you know the thing about it is, you know for
- 24:31Speaker 1: yourself is that that's a comic. You're constantly selling yourself,
- 24:34Speaker 1: you know, you it's a reason you're successful. It's the
- 24:38Speaker 1: reason that you say, Hey, if you're gonna market me
- 24:40Speaker 1: at this club, make sure everybody know I'm Jennifer for
- 24:45Speaker 1: we spell my name right. I mean, they're just such
- 24:48Speaker 1: minor things. Say your name right. Let's let's get there right,
- 24:51Speaker 1: Say your name right, Coca, Say it right now, Coca.
- 24:56Speaker 1: But good, long as the spell right on my chack.
- 25:00Speaker 1: At this point, I'm not gonna trip. But you know,
- 25:03Speaker 1: the thing about it is that my name is Rushan.
- 25:05Speaker 1: So you know a lot of people have coming me
- 25:07Speaker 1: with a lot of a lot of their own versions
- 25:10Speaker 1: of how Rushan should be said. And then you know,
- 25:14Speaker 1: and and sometimes you just go, okay, long this is
- 25:16Speaker 1: but it really is your brand, and you're trying to
- 25:18Speaker 1: build a brand that respect, a brand of recognition. And
- 25:23Speaker 1: so when I saw the way you announciated your name
- 25:26Speaker 1: when it was I was spelled out, I went, that's awesome.
- 25:28Speaker 1: She she she's controlling her voice. She's controlling her brand
- 25:32Speaker 1: and dictating it too, because of the fact that yeah,
- 25:35Speaker 1: it gets it's gets spelled right on the check. But
- 25:37Speaker 1: bar when just a stranger walk up to you and
- 25:40Speaker 1: said right, because that's that's what I knew. I was
- 25:42Speaker 1: kind of making it a little bit there. Coca would
- 25:44Speaker 1: when I didn't even know people, Hey, y Sean, I
- 25:47Speaker 1: don't even know who you are, because I because I
- 25:49Speaker 1: should be able to tell people who knew me and
- 25:51Speaker 1: didn't know me by how they said my name. I go, okay,
- 25:54Speaker 1: I never meant to do mother, Hey Russian, Okay, I've
- 25:57Speaker 1: never met this dude in my life, you know, and
- 26:02Speaker 1: so and so that really helped me to start definding
- 26:04Speaker 1: that okay by by getting more and more people saying
- 26:08Speaker 1: my name right really means my marketing and my branding
- 26:11Speaker 1: is my my my brand awareness is working, and so
- 26:15Speaker 1: a lot of people understand that, like, you know, Apple
- 26:18Speaker 1: wants to be said correctly. You know, IBM wants their
- 26:21Speaker 1: name to be spelled correctly, IBM and said correctly. You know,
- 26:24Speaker 1: Google wants their name to be said correctly, and so
- 26:28Speaker 1: all these things are very important. We talked about marketing
- 26:30Speaker 1: and branding because that's all you've dealt with from day one.
- 26:34Speaker 1: You know, when you say five years old and remember
- 26:37Speaker 1: all these lines, that means that there was an effort
- 26:40Speaker 1: to way back after fifth grade when it was in
- 26:43Speaker 1: the fifth grade, and all these lines, it was an effort,
- 26:45Speaker 1: but you still prepared and and achieved and that in
- 26:49Speaker 1: that work at the people saw you in chief special
- 26:52Speaker 1: because guess what, if you gave me a lot of
- 26:54Speaker 1: lines in the fifth grade, I'm pretty sure I would
- 26:56Speaker 1: never remember or would even care to have done, because
- 27:00Speaker 1: that wasn't my passion. That wasn't my passion. And so
- 27:02Speaker 1: you've been able to carry a passion all these years
- 27:06Speaker 1: and now you're a successful talent and now you're a
- 27:08Speaker 1: successful business woman. What are the next steps because you're
- 27:11Speaker 1: a single parent? Correct, yes, yes, I am old cocase
- 27:18Speaker 1: I'll stun you that. Yes, you're you're a single parent.
- 27:25Speaker 1: What do you just say, single par I'm a single mall.
- 27:28Speaker 1: That's right? Yeah, So what married out there? So let's
- 27:35Speaker 1: talk about the whole balanced life now, because you know,
- 27:37Speaker 1: you're acting, you're traveling, you know your businesswoman now you're
- 27:42Speaker 1: now you're talking about this whole product line that you
- 27:44Speaker 1: have out there, and then you are a mom, single mall,
- 27:48Speaker 1: talk about how you balance all that, um you know,
- 27:52Speaker 1: by the grace of God and a great village. You know,
- 27:56Speaker 1: I have always had a great village around me, especially
- 28:00Speaker 1: you know, after I left you know, my marriage and
- 28:04Speaker 1: became a single mom. I've always had a great village
- 28:06Speaker 1: around me to help me with my son from the
- 28:08Speaker 1: very beginning. So I'm very adamant about, you know, building
- 28:13Speaker 1: a great village around you as a single parent, you know,
- 28:16Speaker 1: much as we were like it from for super people,
- 28:18Speaker 1: you know, super superheroes. You know, we can't do it
- 28:21Speaker 1: all by ourself, and we do need help and we
- 28:23Speaker 1: have to always remember that, you know. And I've always
- 28:26Speaker 1: been grateful and then too, I mean, I'm just gonna
- 28:29Speaker 1: brag a little bit. I have an amazing kid. I
- 28:31Speaker 1: have an amazing kid. His resilience, understanding of what bommy does, um,
- 28:38Speaker 1: and what I have to do for a living. I mean,
- 28:41Speaker 1: he gets it, you know, even you know, he has
- 28:43Speaker 1: his moment where he just wants his mommy and you know,
- 28:46Speaker 1: and I give him that. I mean, this is the
- 28:48Speaker 1: most time that we have been with each other constantly
- 28:53Speaker 1: with no distractions. I mean, you know, well, Mommy is
- 28:56Speaker 1: physically here day in and day out. It has been
- 28:59Speaker 1: for almost right, So, um, that's interesting. And then that's
- 29:05Speaker 1: that's the good side of the pandemic because I'm the
- 29:08Speaker 1: same way with my daughter, you know, uh, you know,
- 29:10Speaker 1: she's twenty two senior in college, and you know all
- 29:13Speaker 1: those shares of raising her, I was on the road.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I was traveling. Plus she was a she was a
- 29:18Speaker 1: tennis star and so tennis probably, so she was always
- 29:22Speaker 1: traveling all over the country. So you know, we last night,
- 29:24Speaker 1: we're playing dance tap dance fever. Every day I'm playing
- 29:27Speaker 1: with her, you know, beating up with calories. You know
- 29:30Speaker 1: how Dad beat me losing more calories in the dance.
- 29:33Speaker 1: So I know what that that that part of this
- 29:35Speaker 1: whole thing is. It's real special to me and I
- 29:37Speaker 1: can hear come out of your bars. But before we
- 29:39Speaker 1: end this interview, I want to go back to these
- 29:41Speaker 1: cravables and I want you to tell people how to
